Language is a set of words used by a group of people to express or reveal a purpose. Arabic is one of the Sam languages, Arab nation is a kind of Sam nations (identical to sam ibn nuh). As we all know that the Arabic language is not only used by the Arab nation, but also used in many nations of the world. Before the arrival of the Islamic religion in the Arab nation, the Arab nation lives in the Jahiliyyah. Résumé :
This article explores the relationships between nation branding, authenticity, language and their ideologies by considering two themes. First, how language ideologies and language practices texture the transnational production, distribution and viewing of subtitled television drama. Second, the extent and ways by which subtitled television dramas, in languages other than English, brand the nation to which they are associated. Using the context of increasing exports of Danish television drama to other nations, the article draws its empirical material from fieldwork interactions with industry professionals and viewers in Japan to consider both themes. The article proposes that there are different intensities by which Danish television dramas brand Denmark and the Nordic region; it discusses the implications of the use of English, and how branding the nation involves processes that are intrinsically fragile and require symbiotic relations with other languages and other nations to be successful. This article forms part of the Theorizing Media in Nation Branding Special Issue.

Résumé :
The concept of linguistic nationalism is first recorded for England in the 16th century, when the dominance of English had to be re-established in fields like the law, science and administration. In the centuries that followed, statements underlining the link between national language and nation are few — even on the Celtic fringe. It was the American Revolution which gave birth to a new centre of anglophones proud of their independent standards; a similar development but with increasingly weaker results has affected Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Second-language countries like India are trailing even further behind, not to mention the problems of creole communities like those in the Caribbean, West Africa or the Southwest Pacific. My paper looks at these communities for evidence of a correlation between linguistic and political independence, standardization and prestige associated with use of the vernacular, and discusses problems connected with the development of alternatives like the standardization of an indigenous language to serve as a badge of national prestige, and as an expression of democratic intentions.

Although decades have passed on language teaching techniques, foreign language teaching is still a subject that does not fall off the agenda and does not lose its originality. It is a fact that there are prejudices against foreign language learning among nation-state citizens or that they have no interest in learning a foreign language. The Iraqi state is in geography where dozens of nations live, and different languages are spoken, and although it is a nation-state, it does not have a mass of people who are closed to foreign language learning like the people of America, England or Turkey. Along with this fact, it is also true that there is a minimal audience that looks at foreign language learning with cultural prejudice. This article focuses on foreign language acquisition in Iraq, language acquisition of children and adults, and the position of Arabic as a foreign language.

Résumé :
Abstract This article analyses the development of national legislation in the field of language and minority-related policies and the subsequent public discussions in Latvia and Ukraine in 2018–2020. During this period, major reforms in the sphere of language policy and the protection of national minorities’ rights were initiated in both countries. The analysis of these initiatives shows that despite somewhat different ways of implementing ‘nationalizing’ practices in Latvia and Ukraine since the restoration of their independence in 1991, the overall trend suggests that the trajectories of the development of the state language and minorities’ policy are increasingly converging in the two countries. The central focus of this article concerns the amendments to education laws and the subsequent appeals to the Constitutional Court of Latvia in 2018–2020 and the adoption of the Law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” in 2019, which have had a considerable impact on the development of minority-related policy.

Résumé :
This research explores the role graphic design can play in the national branding of emergent nations, and takes the multiracial, multicultural state of Malaysia as the principal object of study. Contemporary Malaysian society and culture are reviewed in the context of present views of globalization and postcolonialism, and the phenomenon of ‘glocalization’ emerges as an important one in Malaysia. A variety of design research methods are used to identify the nature of graphic design practice in Malaysia, including the examination of the national government framework of design practices and networks, the design-led method of cultural probes, and participatory observation within several Malaysian design agencies. A questionnaire survey was also carried out with a sample group of design practitioners and interviews conducted with key professional design practitioners in the country and members of the Malaysia Design Council. These methods reveal that the professional and personal outlook of local designers is highly influenced by government policies and the support systems provided by government departments. The findings lead to reflective practice aimed at developing graphic design processes that enable designers involved in national identity projects to better understand and communicate the required historical and cultural features. The outcome of the reflective practice is A Nation’s Visual Language, a pilot handbook and Visual Identity Guide for Malaysian national branding, which can be further developed by others and adapted to the needs of other emergent nations. A major feature of the reflective process is the testing of the handbook by student designers, and discussion of the results with professional practitioners.

Résumé :
While not essential, the link between language and national identity is nevertheless often a highly important and salient one, a fact illustrated by the centrality of linguistic concerns in many nationalist discourses throughout the world. As a result of this linkage, it is understandable that those seeking to create or manipulate national identities have habitually attempted to do so through the formulation and implementation of language policy and planning. This thesis develops a broad theoretical framework for the study of national identity and language policy. Of particular interest is the manner in which these two phenomena frequently interact and the societal consequences of that interaction. South Africa represents a fascinating historical and contemporary context in which to investigate the effect of language policy and planning on the formation of social identities. From the earliest stages of European colonisation to the present day, successive governing regimes have attempted to manipulate the various ethnic and national identities of the South African population to suit their own ideological agendas. In the post-apartheid era, much has been made of the government's official policy commitment to promote 'nation-building' through the institutionalisation of genuinely multilingual practices in public life. In reality, though, public life in present-day South Africa is notable for its increasingly monolingual-English character. This contradiction between official policy and actual linguistic practices is symptomatic of the hegemony of an implicit 'English-only' ideology that permeates most governmental and public organisations. This has led to a situation of highly salient language-based identity conflict between many Afrikaans speakers resentful of the decreasing presence of Afrikaans in public life and those loyal to the de facto monolingual model of nationhood promoted by the ANC. But perhaps the most pernicious consequence of this increasing dominance of English has been its entrenchment of elitist governing practices that ensure the continued socio-economic marginalisation of African language speakers who constitute the large majority of South African citizens. If language planners are to convincingly address this problem, it is clear that a radically alternative model of language policy and national integration needs to be promoted and adopted.

Tilakaratna, Namala Lakshmi. « Reviving the Nation : The discursive construction of national identity in Sri Lankan English Language textbooks ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/15750.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study examines the way Sri Lankan national identity is construed in texts found in the local Grade 11 English Language textbooks that were produced during the ethnic civil war in Sri Lanka and which are still used in Sri Lanka today. The textbooks, created and published by the National Institute of Education, are used for teaching English as a Second Language to students across the public school system. The study uses a systemic functional linguistic (SFL) framework to explore how national identity is recontextualised in these texts for pedagogical purposes, examining the linguistic resources the texts draw on to discursively construct national identity. The thesis argues that within these texts, a homogenous Sinhala and Sinhala Buddhist identity is privileged and promoted as common to all Sri Lankans, while excluding the diverse ethnic, religious and cultural practices of minority ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. A selection of nine texts from the Grade 11 textbooks are analysed for text types and icons, to determine what kinds of texts are privileged in a pedagogic context and how these texts construe national identity. In order to identify the patterns of choices that create text types or ‘genres’ (Martin, 1992; Martin & Rose, 2008) and ‘icons’ (Martin, 2010, 2016; Tann 2010, 2014), the selected texts are analysed using the lexicogrammatical systems of transitivity and theme (Halliday & Matthiessen 2004) and the discourse semantic systems of Appraisal and periodicity (Martin & Rose 2007; Martin & White. 2005). Genre is used to explore the kinds of texts used in the service of national identity, while ‘iconography’ (Tann, 2010b; 2013) is used to explore how choices combine across lexicogrammatical and discourse semantic systems and are stabilised over the course of a text in construing communal identity. The analysis shows that while the focus of these texts appears to be on teaching students how to read and write valued text types in English, these texts are heavily dependent on shared understandings of socio-cultural, religious and cultural ethnic identity for making meaning. These socio-cultural meanings focus on projecting a homogenous national identity through the use of a number of ‘icons’ including valued people, things and activities that are representative primarily of Sinhala or Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. By examining national identity and its construction in the context of Sri Lanka, this thesis to contributes to the broader research area of nations, nationalism and national identity and uncovers how pedagogical texts contribute to the creation of a ‘national consciousness’ (Bernstein, 1996/2000). In addition, this thesis contributes to research that explores textbooks and their construction of identity in the field of English as a Second Language, and explorations of ‘the discursive construction of national identity’ (Hall, 1996) through the use of a socio-semiotic framework for the exploration of national identity. This study also contributes to the relatively new research on communal identity in SFL by examining its construal in pedagogical texts. In addition, it proposes an extension to the existing ‘iconography’ framework to account for the valued activities, or ‘rituals’, that affirm membership in a community. This study shows that in maintaining Sinhala Buddhist identity as the dominant identity, these textbooks shape the next generation of Sinhalese students to align with the ideologically motivated and symbolic disempowerment of minority ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.

Résumé :
Southeast Asia (SEA) is not only rich in multicultural areas but also rich in multilingual nations with the population of more than 624 million and more than 1,253 languages (Ethnologue 2015). With the cultural uniqueness of each country, this region also accords each national languages with language planning and political management. This strategy brings a challenges to SEA and can lead to conflicts among other ethnic groups, largely owing to leadership. The ethnic conflicts of SEA bring controversy between governments and minorities, such as the ethnic conflict in Aceh, Indonesia, the Muslim population of the south Thailand, and the Bangsa Moro of Mindanao, of the Philippines. The objective of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of the linguistic perspectives of SEA. This research examines two main problems. First, this paper investigates the linguistic area which refers to a geographical area in which genetically unrelated languages have come to share many linguistic features as a result of long mutual influence. The SEA has been called a linguistic area because languages share many features in common such as lexical tone, classifiers, serial verbs, verb-final items, prepositions, and noun-adjective order. SEA consists of five language families such as Austronesian, Mon-Khmer, Sino-Tibetan, Tai-Kadai, and Hmong-Mien. Second, this paper also examines why each nation of SEA takes one language to become the national language of the nation. The National language plays an important role in the educational system because some nations take the same languages as a national language—the Malay language in the case of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The research method of this paper is to apply comparative method to find out the linguistic features of the languages of SEA in terms of phonology, morphology, and grammar.

Résumé :
We define nation-building as a process which leads to the formation of countries in which the citizens feel a sufficient amount of commonality of interests, goals and preferences so that they do not wish to separate from each other. It can also be said that nation-building is a process in which the government, the state or a group of elites act with the aim of creating national unity and reducing divisions in society. In this regard, groups and ethnicities come together to form a national identity. Nation and nation-building are two modern phenomena and the elements of the nation-building process, which are patriotic unity, citizenship, collective identity, equal opportunities for all citizens and a common language, are the foundations of the formation of a modern state. In this research and theoretically, the concept of nation-building and its constituent elements and the importance of this process for the Kurdistan region are discussed. The main question in this research is the question of the national existence of the Kurd. Is there a nation in the Kurdistan region? If so, how? If not, why not? Should nation-building or state-building be a priority for the Kurds in the Kurdistan region?

Résumé :
Proverbs are important data depicting the traditional culture of each nation. Vietnamese proverbs, dated thousands of years ago, are an immense valuable treasure of experience which the Vietnamese people desire to pass to the younger generations. This paper aims to explore the unique and diversified world of intelligence and spirits of the Vietnamese through a condensed and special literary genre, as well as a traditional value of the nation (Nguyen Xuan Kinh 2013, Tran Ngoc Them 1996, Le Chi Que and Ngo Thi Thanh Quy 2014). Through an interdisciplinary approach, from an anthropological point of view, approaching proverbs we will open up a vast treasure of knowledge and culture of all Vietnamese generations. The study has examined over 16,000 Vietnamese proverbs and analysed three groups expressing Vietnamese people’s behaviors toward nature, society and their selves, and compared them with English and Japanese proverbs. The research has attempted to explore the beauty of Vietnamese language, cultural values and the souls and personalities of Vietnam. Approaching Vietnamese proverbs under the interdisciplinary perspective of language, culture and literature is a new research direction in the field of Social Sciences and Humanity in Vietnam. From these viewpoints, it is seen that proverbs have remarkably contributed to the language and culture of Vietnam as well as and constructed to the practice of language use in everyday life which is imaginary, meaningful and effective in communication. Furthermore, the study seeks to inspire the Vietnamese youth’s pride in national identity and to encourage their preservation and promotion for traditional values of the nation in the context of integration and globalisation. In the meantime, it would be favourable to introduce and market the beauty of Vietnamese language, culture and people to the world, encouraging the speakers of other languages to study, explore and understand Vietnam.

Résumé :
The article considers the problem of teaching students foreign languages by means of comparing national linguistic pictures of the world. The analysis of linguistic and linguadidactic literature allows to interpret linguistic picture of the world as a set of knowledge about the world embodied in language form, more precisely - the specific features of the national language, reflecting cultural, historical and social experience of a particular nation. In this regard the national linguistic pictures of the world are not identical. The authors lay stress on the importance of taking into account the fact of national specific differences of linguistic pictures of the world in teaching foreign students Ukrainian as a foreign language, also indicate that special attention should be paid to linguacultural work with vocabulary and phraseology, in which national and cultural experience is embodied.

Résumé :
As the war against Ukraine erupted on 24 February 2022, national minorities found themselves among its first victims, both as individuals and communities characterized by unique knowledge, language, and culture. This piece looks into the immediate effects of the war on ethnic Greeks and Bulgarians, and potential lessons learned for the state of Ukraine and its minorities from these tragic events. Whereas ethnic Greeks strive for physical survival in a besieged city of Mariupol and its surroundings, ethnic Bulgarians have mobilized in support of refugees. Those situations highlight the role of minority community leaders in voicing support for the Ukrainian authorities and as facilitators of aid from kin-states, as well as turn minority civil society organizations (CSOs) into agents of change of nation-wide significance.

Résumé :
The article deals with the mental-existential relationship between ethnoculture, national identity and media culture as a necessary factor for their preservation, transformation, on the example of national original algorithms, matrix models, taking into account global tendencies and Ukrainian archetypal-specific features in Ukraine. the media actively serve the domestic oligarchs in their information-virtual and real wars among themselves and the same expansive alien humanitarian acts by curtailing ethno-cultural programs-projects on national radio, on television, in the press, or offering the recipient instead of a pop pointer, without even communicating to the audience the information stipulated in the media laws − information support-protection-development of ethno-culture national product in the domestic and foreign/diaspora mass media, the support of ethnoculture by NGOs and the state institutions themselves. In the context of the study of the cultural national socio-humanitarian space, the article diagnoses and predicts the model of creating and preserving in it the dynamic equilibrium of the ethno-cultural space, in which the nation must remember the struggle for access to information and its primary sources both as an individual and the state as a whole, culture the transfer of information, which in the process of globalization is becoming a paramount commodity, an egregore, and in the post-traumatic, interrupted-compensatory cultural-information space close rehabilitation mechanisms for national identity to become a real factor in strengthening the state − and vice versa in the context of adequate laws («Law about press and other mass media», Law «About printed media (press) in Ukraine», Law «About Information», «Law about Languages», etc.) and their actual effect in creating motivational mechanisms for preserving/protecting the Ukrainian language, as one of the main identifiers of national identity, information support for its expansion as labels cultural and geostrategic areas.

Résumé :
Public interest, research and policies about dual language education and the multiple benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy have led to shortages of bilingual education teachers in the state and nation. School districts and educator preparation programs are actively looking for pathways of bilingual teacher preparation to meet local demands for more dual language programs. Modeled after medical residencies, teacher residencies are deeply rooted in clinical training, typically placing residents in classrooms with experienced teachers in high-needs schools where they are supported in their development. Teacher residencies allow for the recruitment of teachers, offer strong clinical preparation, connect new teachers to mentors and provide financial incentives to retain teachers in the school/district of residency. Little is known however, about bilingual teacher residencies in the state. Following a review of various data sources, researchers find that, to date, there are few bilingual teacher residencies offered and that there is a need to expand and study bilingual teacher residencies as one of the most viable pathways to respond to this shortage.

Résumé :
In this 2021 Nulungu Reconciliation lecture, Dr Robert Isaacs AM OAM will explore the meaning of reconciliation and the lessons of his personal journey in two worlds. As part of the Stolen Generation, and born at the dawn of the formal Aboriginal Rights Movement, this lecture outlines the changing social attitudes through the eyes of the lived experience and the evolving national policy framework that has sought to manage, then heal, the wounds that divided a nation. Aspirations of self-determination, assimilation and reconciliation are investigated to unpack the intent versus the outcome, and why the deep challenges not only still exist, but in some locations the divide is growing. The Kimberley is an Aboriginal rights location of global relevance with Noonkanbah at the beating heart. The Kimberley now has 93 percent of the land determined through Native Title yet the Kimberley is home to extreme disadvantage, abuse and hopelessness. Our government agencies are working “nine-to-five” but our youth, by their own declaration, are committing suicide out of official government hours. The theme of the Kimberley underpins this lecture. This is the journey of a man that was of two worlds but now walks with the story of five - the child of the Bibilmum Noongar language group and the boy that was stolen. The man that became a policy leader and the father of a Yawuru-Bibilmum-Noongar family and the proud great-grandson that finally saw the recognition of the courageous act of saving fifty shipwrecked survivors in 1876.

Гарлицька, Т. С. Substandard Vocabulary in the System of Urban Communication. Криворізький державний педагогічний університет, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3912.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.
