Résumé :
Structural and electronic properties of pentacene/pentacenequinone thin films prepared on various solid-state substrates by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique are reported. Amorphous structure of the prepared films has been proved by XRD measurements. Oxygen-related defects have been identified in the Langmuir–Blodgett films as a consequence of the exposure of pentacene Langmuir layer to air. Crystallization induced by thermal treatment of the prepared amorphous thin films has been observed. Electronic properties of pentacene/ pentacenequinone Langmuir–Blodgett films have been investigated in the contact-less architecture using electrochemical techniques. The energy band diagram of the amorphous pentacene/pentacenequinone Langmuir–Blodgett film on a metallic surface was constructed from the obtained electrochemical data.

Résumé :
Because of their applications in the areas of non-linear optics, molecular electronics, and biosensors, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films have been extensively studied by a wide variety of scattering and spectroscopic techniques. The atomic force microscope has emerged as an important tool for studying LB films because of its unprecedented ability to quantitatively measure films with high resolution. The unique abilities of quantitative AFM imaging motivated us to investigate the effect of incorporating different divalent metal cations and fatty acids of different chain length into films deposited on both amorphous and ordered substrates. Once substrate effects have been accounted for, multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett films of palmitic, stearic and arachidic acid salts show that the area per molecule is primarily controlled by the detailed interactions of the counterion with the carboxylic acid group. However, the lattice dimensions and symmetry are dictated by the close packing of the alkane chains, given the constraint of area per molecule set by the counterion.

Résumé :
Phospholipid monolayers and bilayers prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique are simplified model systems of biological membranes. The molecular organization of these monolayers and bilayers has been intensely studied as they are excellent tools for understanding biological processes such as adhesion, fusion, protein structure and organization, etc. Recent structural studies have included electron diffraction of monolayers deposited on substrates and X-ray diffraction of monolayers at the air-water interface. Both diffraction techniques suggest that in the gel phase, the lipid hydrocarbon chains possess long range orientational order, but relatively short range positional order. As a result, L-B films in the gel state closely resemble the “hexatic” phases better known in thermotropic liquid crystals. However, both shortrange and long-range order have not yet been studied in a single Langmuir-Blodgett film.

Résumé :
The characterization of Langmuir–Blodgett thin films of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PDA) and their use in metal–insulator–metal (MIM) devices were studied. The Langmuir monolayer behavior of the PDA film was studied at the air/water interface using surface tension–area isotherms of polymeric and monomeric PDA. Langmuir–Blodgett (LB, vertical deposition) and Langmuir–Schaefer (LS, horizontal deposition) techniques were used to deposit the PDA film on various substrates (glass, quartz, silicon, and nickel-coated film on glass). The electrochemical, electrical and optical properties of the LB and LS PDA films were studied using cyclic voltammetry, current–voltage characteristics (I–V), and UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopies. Atomic force microscopy measurements were performed in order to analyze the surface morphology and roughness of the films. A MIM tunnel diode was fabricated using a PDA monolayer assembly as the insulating barrier, which was sandwiched between two nickel layers. The precise control of the thickness of the insulating monolayers proved critical for electron tunneling to take place in the MIM structure. The current–voltage characteristics of the MIM diode revealed tunneling behavior in the fabricated Ni–PDA LB film–Ni structures.

A unique integrated optical device has been constructed which allows the study of submicron films and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers at both elevated (100°C) and cryogenic (−125°C) temperatures by Raman spectroscopy. The two-stage coupler maintains a constant pressure on the prism used for coupling the incoming laser light into the thin film whose spectrum is desired. A Raman study of L-B multilayers of cadmium arachidate (CdA) in the −125°C to 100°C illustrates the versatility of the integrated optical technique.

Résumé :
Graphene has become a material of choice for an increasing number of scientific and industrial applications. It has been used for gas sensing due to its favorable properties, such as a large specific surface area, as well as the sensitivity of its electrical parameters to adsorption processes occurring on its surface. Efforts are ongoing to produce graphene gas sensors by using methods that are compatible with scaling, simple deposition techniques on arbitrary substrates, and ease of use. In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication of carbon dioxide gas sensors from Langmuir–Blodgett thin films of sulfonated polyaniline-functionalized graphene that was obtained by using electrochemical exfoliation. The sensor was tested within the highly relevant concentration range of 150 to 10,000 ppm and 0% to 100% at room temperature (15 to 35 °C). The results show that the sensor has both high sensitivity to low analyte concentrations and high dynamic range. The sensor response times are approximately 15 s. The fabrication method is simple, scalable, and compatible with arbitrary substrates, which makes it potentially interesting for many practical applications. The sensor is used for real-time carbon dioxide concentration monitoring based on a theoretical model matched to our experimental data. The sensor performance was unchanged over a period of several months.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTOrganic films with a thickness of few nanometers are potentially useful components in many practical and commercial applications such as sensors, detectors, displays and electronic circuit components. In this context, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method is one the most promising techniques for preparing these films. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of three new amphiphilic organometallic compounds with ferrocene units, which consist of one ferrocenyl aminocarbene with the general formula FcC=Cr(CO)5NH(CH2)15CH3, and two ferrocenyl amides with the general formula FcC=MNH(CH2)15CH3 where M = S or Se. These new derivatives have been synthesized to study the influence of long alkyl side chain and the hydrophilic head on the film organization behavior at the air-water interface. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was focused for building ordered nanostructures in molecular assemblies of ferrocenyl derivatives, which are apt to form a stable and transferable monolayer film. The π-A isotherm, hysteresis, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and film stability were used to characterize the behavior of a monolayer film at the air-water interface. Z- type LB films were prepared from molecular monolayers which were transferred onto glass substrates. These films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Visible spectra and X-ray diffraction (DRX) techniques.

Résumé :
This paper reports on novel fabrication techniques for well-ordered Langmuir (L) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of metallo tetra-tert-butyl phthalocyanines (MTBPcs) containing various transition metal ions, i.e. Co 2+, Cu 2+, Zn 2+ and VO 2+. An extreme dilute concentration of a developing solution releases the aggregation state of MTBPcs. Furthermore, the flow-orientation adjusts in-plane ordering of MTBPcs. Both procedures enable the fabrication of well-ordered L-monolayers of MTBPcs at the air-water interface. For the LB films prepared by the vertical dipping method, an annealing procedure dramatically improves the ordering of MTBPcs. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy also reveals that a spin-chain system in the MTBPc LB films possesses a two-dimensional order.

Résumé :
Various poly(amic acid)s with azobenzene-chromophore sidegroups have been synthesized and structurally and functionally characterized. Their amphiphilic properties allowed us to prepare stable monomolecular layers at the water/air interface of a Langmuir trough, and to transfer these highly organized monolayers to solid supports via the Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn deposition protocol. The resulting multilayer assemblies were investigated by surface plasmon- and waveguide-optical techniques, by X-ray reflectometry, and by UV-vis and IR spectroscopies. Thermal imidization of the assemblies resulted in functional poly(imide) multilayers that still could undergo photoisomerization reactions in their azobenzene sidegroups. The kinetic parameters of this trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization, respectively, as well as, the resulting control of the alignment of a liquid crystal in contact to these "command layers" were evaluated.

Résumé :
A cathode active and selective pesticide electrochemical sensor based on Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) film of cobalt phthalocyanine-anthraquinone hybrid (CoPc-AQ) was constructed for the first time in this study. Cobalt-based, Pc ring-based, and anthraquinone-based reduction processes of CoPc-AQ indicated suitability of the complex as a possible electrochemical catalyst and sensor for detection of target species. LB film of CoPc-AQ on ITO (ITO/CoPc-AQ electrode) was titrated with eserine and carbofuran pesticides and interaction of the electrode with these pesticides was tested with square wave voltammetry (SWV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and double potential step chronocoulometry (DPSCC) techniques. ITO/CoPc-AQ electrode selectively sensed carbofuran and eserine pesticides. While ITO/CoPc-AQ electrode senses carbofuran with the voltammetric responses recorded at anodic potentials (1.20 V), eserine sensing affected antraquinone based reduction peaks recorded at cathodic potentials (-0.80 V). Modification of ITO/CoPc-AQ electrode with nano-platinum and nano-gold particles (ITO/CoPc-AQ-n Pt and ITO/CoPc-AQ-n Au ) increased the sensitivity of the electrode. All basic sensor parameters of modified electrodes were derived with different measurement techniques and compared with each other. The lowest detection limit (2.30 × 10-9 M) was recorded with EIS techniques on ITO/CoPc-AQ-n Pt electrode for sensing of eserine.

Résumé :
Much attention has been paid to the synthesis of low-dimensional materials from small units such as functional molecules. Bottom-up approaches to create new low-dimensional materials with various functional units can be realized with the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics. In this review article, we overview recent research progresses on materials nanoarchitectonics at two-dimensional liquid interfaces, which are dimensionally restricted media with some freedoms of molecular motion. Specific characteristics of molecular interactions and functions at liquid interfaces are briefly explained in the first parts. The following sections overview several topics on materials nanoarchitectonics at liquid interfaces, such as the preparation of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, and the fabrication of low-dimensional and specifically structured nanocarbons and their assemblies at liquid–liquid interfaces. Finally, interfacial nanoarchitectonics of biomaterials including the regulation of orientation and differentiation of living cells are explained. In the recent examples described in this review, various materials such as molecular machines, molecular receptors, block-copolymer, DNA origami, nanocarbon, phages, and stem cells were assembled at liquid interfaces by using various useful techniques. This review overviews techniques such as conventional Langmuir–Blodgett method, vortex Langmuir–Blodgett method, liquid–liquid interfacial precipitation, instructed assembly, and layer-by-layer assembly to give low-dimensional materials including nanowires, nanowhiskers, nanosheets, cubic objects, molecular patterns, supramolecular polymers, metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. The nanoarchitecture materials can be used for various applications such as molecular recognition, sensors, photodetectors, supercapacitors, supramolecular differentiation, enzyme reactors, cell differentiation control, and hemodialysis.

Résumé :
Graphene films prepared from solution and deposited by Langmuir–Blodgett self-assembly technique (LBSA) were treated with radio-frequency (13.56 MHz) nitrogen plasma in order to investigate the influence of the time of nitrogen plasma exposure on the work function, sheet resistance, and surface morphology of LBSA graphene films. Kelvin probe force microscopy and sheet resistance measurements confirm nitrogen functionalization of our films, with the Fermi level shifting in a direction that indicates binding to a pyridinic and/or pyrrolic site. Upon 1 min of nitrogen plasma exposure, the sheet resistance decreases and there is no obvious difference in film morphology. However, plasma exposure longer than 5 min leads to the removal of graphene flakes and degradation of graphene films, in turn, affecting the flake connectivity and increasing film resistance. We show that by changing the exposure time, we can control the work function and decrease sheet resistance, without affecting surface morphology. Controllability of the plasma technique has an advantage for graphene functionalization over conventional doping techniques such as chemical drop-casting. It allows for the controllable tuning of the work function, surface morphology, and sheet resistance of LBSA graphene films, which is substantial for applications in various optoelectronic devices.

Résumé :
The paper identifies ten market areas for sensors and then concentrates on the special characteristics, requirements and technologies of the industrial sector with its market purchases of US$2.8 Billion annually. The particular characteristics of this market are variety and a relatively long gestation period between the breadboard and the fully accepted and engineered product. The treatment of the subject and the definition of the word ‘recent’ in the title is related in the first half of the paper towards the fully engineered quantity production end of sensor development rather than on original research work much of which never reaches industrial usage. Some twenty examples, selected by the author, of interesting recent developments are briefly described. These were chosen on the basis of their technical interest and innovatory measurement principles rather than on their industrial importance. The latter part of the paper deals with potentially important technologies likely to influence sensor developments of the future such as Langmuir-Blodgett films and to mention in passing our Prime Minister's erstwhile scientific contribution to this topic.

Résumé :
Dispersion of degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) efficiency near the exciton resonance of aggregates of 1,1′-diethy1-2-2′-cyanine (pseudoisocyanine, PIC) chloride is reported. Correlation with the spectrum of imaginary parts of nonlinearity obtained by pump and probe techniques is discussed. Third order nonlinear susceptibility of PIC aggregates has been calculated supposing highest density packing attainable by Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The nonlinear figure-of-merit of aggregates was evaluated, which is intensity dependent due to exciton annihilation. Observed intensity and wavelength dependence of mixing efficiency is qualitatively explained in terms of absorption saturation, exciton annihilation, and subsequent generation of an excess diagonal disorder by vibrational energy accumulated in aggregates.

Résumé :
Langmuir-Blodgett films (LB) of hydroxamic amphiphiles were used as coating barriers on metal surface against corrosion. Two long-chain hydroxamic acids [CH3(CH2)16CONHOH] monolayers in the presence of some divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, and Cu2+) have been studied at different pH of the subphase. The monolayer was characterized by surface pressure-area isotherms and visualized by Brewster angle microscope (BAM). Compact Langmuir layers were deposited on copper surface, where the modified surfaces were characterized by contact angle measurement as well as by electrochemical techniques. The morphology of LB coated copper surface was visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The coated copper surfaces were tested in corrosive media at acidic and neutral pH. The results show that the multi-molecular LB films of hydroxamic acid salts form good barriers against copper corrosion. The comparison of these results with copper coated by LB layers without divalent cations shows that the presence of divalent cations in the subphase increases the copper corrosion inhibition. The octadecanoyl hydroxamic acid (C18N) results in better and more stable monolayer with cations in the subphase.

Résumé :
As a new field of oxidative stress-based therapy, cold physical plasma is a promising tool for several biomedical applications due to its potential to create a broad diversity of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Although proposed, the impact of plasma-derived RONS on the cell membrane lipids and properties is not fully understood. For this purpose, the changes in the lipid bilayer functionality under oxidative stress generated by an argon plasma jet (kINPen) were investigated by electrochemical techniques. In addition, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was employed to analyze the plasma-induced modifications on the model lipids. Various asymmetric bilayers mimicking the structure and properties of the erythrocyte cell membrane were transferred onto a gold electrode surface by Langmuir-Blodgett/Langmuir-Schaefer deposition techniques. A strong impact of cholesterol on membrane permeabilization by plasma-derived species was revealed. Moreover, the maintenance of the barrier properties is influenced by the chemical composition of the head group. Mainly the head group size and its hydrogen bonding capacities are relevant, and phosphatidylcholines are significantly more susceptible than phosphatidylserines and other lipid classes, underlining the high relevance of this lipid class in membrane dynamics and cell physiology.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTAssembly of nanowires into ordered macroscopic structures has attracted great scientific interests in the past decade. In this work, we report a rapid low-cost scalable oil-water interfacial self assembly process for fabricating aligned Ag nanowires (AgNWs) films on solid substrates. This process is much simpler than the traditional Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques and allows the assembly of one–dimensional Ag nanowires onto any solid substrates without extra pretreatment of the surface of silver nanowires or the solid substrate. The present aligned AgNW films can serve as robust surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors for chemical and bimolecular detection with improved spectra quality and demonstrated uniformity of SERS signal using R6G dye as probe.

Résumé :
We present a novel procedure for ceramic nanocoating using oxide nanosheet as a building block. A variety of oxide nanosheets (such as Ti1−δO2, MnO2 and perovsites) were synthesized by delaminating appropriate layered precursors into their molecular single sheets. These nanosheets are exceptionally rich in both structural diversity and electronic properties, with potential applications including conductors, semiconductors, insulators, and ferromagnets. Another attractive aspect is that nanosheets can be organized into various nanoarchitectures by applying solution-based synthetic techniques involving electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. It is even possible to tailor superlattice assemblies, incorporating into the nanosheet galleries with a wide range of materials such as organic molecules, polymers, and inorganic/metal nanoparticles. Sophisticated functionalities or paper-like devices can be designed through the selection of nanosheets and combining materials, and precise control over their arrangement at the molecular scale.

Résumé :
Organic ultrathin films which were prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and physical vapour deposition (PVD) techniques, have aroused intense interest because of their possibilities of potential applications such as in electronic and optical materials, electron-beam resists and so on. For the realization of such applications, it would be very useful to know the microscopic structure of the organic ultrathin films and the formation mechanism of those. Electron microscopy is ideal to understand the relationship between the structure and the property of interests ; in fact, molecular images have been reported on phtha 1ocyanine derivatives1 and polymers. However, in the case of such as fatty acids and their derivatives, the lattice imaging has not yet been achieved because of severe radiation damage by incident electron beam.

Résumé :
In this research, a compact electronic nose (e-nose) based on a shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensor array is proposed for the NO2 detection, classification and discrimination among some of the most relevant surrounding toxic chemicals, such as carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), benzene (C6H6) and acetone (C3H6O). Carbon-based nanostructured materials (CBNm), such as mesoporous carbon (MC), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphene oxide (GO) and polydopamine/reduced graphene oxide (PDA/rGO) are deposited as a sensitive layer with controlled spray and Langmuir–Blodgett techniques. We show the potential of the mass loading and elastic effects of the CBNm to enhance the detection, the classification and the discrimination of NO2 among different gases by using Machine Learning (ML) techniques (e.g., PCA, LDA and KNN). The small dimensions and low cost make this analytical system a promising candidate for the on-site discrimination of sub-ppm NO2.

Résumé :
Most previous studies relating to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signal enhancement were focused on the interaction between the light and the substrate in the x-y axis. 3D SERS substrates reported in the most of previous papers could contribute partial SERS enhancement via z axis, but the increases of the surface area were the main target for those reports. However, the z axis is also useful in achieving improved SERS intensity. In this work, hot spots along the z axis were specifically created in a sandwich nanofilm. Sandwich nanofilms were prepared with self-assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett techniques, and comprised of monolayer Au nanorings sandwiched between bottom Ag mirror and top Ag cover films. Monolayer Au nanorings were formed by self-assembly at the interface of water and hexane, followed by Langmuir-Blodgett transfer to a substrate with sputtered Ag mirror film. Their hollow property allows the light transmitted through a cover film. The use of a Ag cover layer of tens nanometers in thickness was critical, which allowed light access to the middle Au nanorings and the bottom Ag mirror, resulting in more plasmonic resonance and coupling along perpendicular interfaces (z-axis). The as-designed sandwich nanofilms could achieve an overall ~8 times SERS signals amplification compared to only the Au nanorings layer, which was principally attributed to enhanced electromagnetic fields along the created z-axis. Theoretical simulations based on finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method showed consistent results with the experimental ones. This study points out a new direction to enhance the SERS intensity by involving more hot spots in z-axis in a designer nanostructure for high-performance molecular recognition and detection.
