Wellens' syndrome is characterized by an electrocardiographic pattern of T-wave changes associated with a critical stenosis of the left anterior descending artery (LAD), which progresses to an extensive anterior myocardial infarction in the majority of cases. For this reason, its recognition and early treatment are extremely important. We report 2 cases of Wellens' syndrome: an 83-year-old male presenting with ill-characterized chest pain, biphasic T waves in V1-V3 during an asymptomatic period, negative cardiac biomarkers, and a 64% stenosis in LAD with a fractional flow reserve of 0.96 who fared well on medical therapy, and an 67-year-old male with typical angina pain, biphasic T waves in V2-V4 during asymptomatic periods, anterior ST-segment elevation at 2 min of effort during an exercise stress test, positive high-sensitivity cardiac troponin, and an 80% stenosis in the proximal LAD who was submitted to percutaneous coronary intervention which rendered him asymptomatic. The spectrum of Wellens' syndrome is very wide, and knowledge and high clinical suspicion for its diagnosis, especially in its rarest presentation of biphasic T waves, is key to avoiding catastrophic consequences.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the major factors in the process of economic growth that influence the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in Vietnam. An Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was used to evaluate the impact based on Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and Pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) in 1990–2011. The results indicate that the economic growth, energy consumption, financial development and trade openness positively influence the CO2 emissions, whereas foreign direct investment has a negative impact in the short term. Coefficient of joining ASEAN is not statistically significant. The findings of this study also support the validity of EKC and PHH in the Vietnamese economy. Therefore, it is important to use green energy, examine requirements for foreign investment and adopt trade-related measures and policies to increase environmental protection.

AB2O4-type binary-transition metal oxides (BTMOs) of CuCo2O4 and MnCo2O4 were successfully prepared on ordered macroporous electrode plates (OMEP) for supercapacitors. Under the current density of 5 mA cm−2, the CuCo2O4/OMEP electrode achieved a specific capacitance of 1199 F g−1. The asymmetric supercapacitor device prepared using CuCo2O4/OMEP as the positive electrode and carbon-based materials as the negative electrode (CuCo2O4/OMEP//AC) achieved the power density of 14.58 kW kg−1 under the energy density of 11.7 Wh kg−1. After 10,000 GCD cycles, the loss capacitance of CuCo2O4/OMEP//AC is only 7.5% (the retention is 92.5%). The MnCo2O4/OMEP electrode shows the specific and area capacitance of 843 F g−1 and 5.39 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2. The MnCo2O4/OMEP-based supercapacitor device (MnCo2O4/OMEP//AC) has a power density of 8.33 kW kg−1 under the energy density of 11.6 Wh kg−1 and the cycle stability was 90.2% after 10,000 cycles. The excellent power density and cycle stability prove that the prepared hybrid supercapacitor fabricated under silicon process has a good prospect as the power buffer device for solar cells.

Pre-structural critical approaches sought to exclude the text from their fields of study, contenting themselves with making it a document that serves its historical, social, psychological and other goals. After that, the pioneers of structuralism focused in their beginnings on the inside of the text, trying to realize how the linguistic structures are interconnected, ignoring the internal structure of the text. Goldmanian structuralism presented itself as an alternative to formal structuralism. Goldman was inspired by sociological and philosophical ideas and reformulated them in line with his dialectical Marxist thought. Formative structuralism is based on revealing the relationship between the mentality of a particular social group and the overall structure of the literary work. In this research, we will try, based on the formative structuralism approach, in two main chapters, to answer what the concepts of formative structuralism are, and how and when did formative structuralism appear. As for the second chapter, the Goldmanian formative constructivism approach was applied in the story (Collect Hailstones) by (Mohsen Ahmed Omar). Analysis and interpretation of the parts of the story according to the Goldmannian method.

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) have two prices, the market price and the net asset value (NAV) price. ETFs NAV price gets determined by the net value of the constituent assets, whereas the market price of ETFs depends upon the number of units bought or sold on the stock exchange during trading hours. As per the law of one price, the NAV and market price of the ETF should be the same. However, due to demand and supply forces, the market price may divert from its NAV. This price difference may have significant repercussions to investors, as it represents a cost if they buy overvalued ETF shares or sell undervalued ETF shares. Pricing efficiency is the speed at which the market makers correct the deviations between ETFs NAV and market price. The present study attempts to investigate the pricing efficiency of Indian equity ETFs employing an autoregression model over its price deviation, and also attempts to understand the lead-lag relationship between the price and NAV using the vector error correction model (VECM).

This study employs the bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach alongside the dynamic ARDL simulations technique to investigate the non-linear effect of public debt on public expenditure in Nigeria during the 1981–2020 period. The result of the bootstrap bounds test illustrates the presence of a long-term relationship between public expenditure and public debt (along with oil rents, output growth and urbanisation). Further, the estimation results indicate that the effect of public debt on public expenditure is non-linear. In particular, public expenditure increases at early stages of rising public debt but declines at latter phases when public debt grows beyond specific threshold. This empirical outcome is further validated by the dynamic ARDL simulations approach which shows a significant decline in predicted public expenditure after short-term expansion due to counterfactual shock in public debt. Thus, policies which diversify public revenue from oil production and a reversal of the rising trend in public debt are recommended to avert the adverse welfare implications of declining public expenditure.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the long-run causal impact of various economic factors on Lithuanian stock, government securities and real estate prices, and to assess how accurately future asset returns can be forecasted based solely on economic information. Five macroeconomic indicators, namely, gross domestic product (GDP), foreign direct investment (FDI), consumer price index (CPI), money supply (MS) and Vilnius interbank offered rate (VILIBOR), were included in the model. The results of the created autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) revealed that a long-run causal relationship between Lithuanian assets and macroeconomic variables exists and that changing values of these indicators explain about half of the variability of assets’ returns. The results of ARDL model forecast showed that the most precise predictions are obtainable in real estate market, while forecasted returns of stock and government securities are not so accurate, especially the further forecast horizon. The possibility to understand driving factors behind changes of asset prices and to predict future return is of a particular importance not only for investors and businessmen, but also for the policy makers who are responsible for making substantiated decisions regarding monetary, macroprudential and fiscal policies they conduct.

This paper analyses head of state immunity, a traditional rule of international law, in relation to the indictments by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2009 against the current Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir. It can be agreed that the doctrine of immunity in international law attempts to overcome the tension between the protection of human rights and the demands of state sovereignty. The statutes and decisions of international criminal courts make it clear that no immunity for international crimes shall be attached to heads of states or to senior government officials. However, the case against the Sudanese President, where the jurisdiction of the ICC was triggered by the UN Security Council‟s referral of the situation in Darfur to the Court, represents the first case where a serving head of state has, in fact, been indicted before the ICC. From this case, a number of legal issues have arisen; such as the questions where the ICC‟s jurisdiction over an incumbent head of state, not party to the ICC Statute, is justified, and the obligations upon ICC state parties to surrender such a head of state to the requesting international criminal court. This paper gives an analysis of these questions.

Muslims in South Africa live within the framework of a Western economy in which the notion of interest plays a pivotal role. This system does not seem to comply with the strict interpretation of Islamic law, since the Quran prohibits any dealings on the basis of interest and strongly condemns those who continue to deal in interest-based transactions, warning them of a “notice of war from Allah and His Apostle”. Muslims are therefore faced with the dilemma of either participating in the current prevailing economic system and thereby violating the Quranic injunctions prohibiting interest or Riba, or completely withdrawing from participation in this system and conducting their business transactions in accordance with Islamic injunctions. This study is an attempt to examine whether an Islamic banking enterprise within the greater Tshwane area could survive and even flourish in the long term if it were operating within the parameters of Islamic law, thus in the absence of the interest factor. The research methodology employed was that of qualitative research, and the study consists of both a literature and an empirical study. It became evident from the literature review that a bank’s survival within the Western economic order depends on the confidence that its depositors have in it. In an Islamic economic system the ethical and legal components distinguish it from other systems. The most striking feature of the Islamic banking environment is the so-called profit and loss sharing system (PLS). The literature study was complemented by an empirical study. Respondents were interviewed in three categories: Muslim businessmen, Islamic bankers and Islamic religious leaders. An analysis of data from the respondents revealed that they were of the opinion that there was a need for an Islamic bank in order to avoid any interest-based dealings and to operate strictly in accordance with Islamic law and principles. Based on the literature and field study a simple model of an Islamic banking enterprise was constructed which could function within the greater Tshwane area and within the South African economic context, but which would be based on Islamic Shariah principles. In constructing this model due cognisance was taken of the fact that it would prove to be a very difficult task to amend existing banking laws to provide for the easy entry and functioning of an Islamic bank. Based on the literature and empirical study it was concluded that to provide for the easy entry and functioning of an Islamic banking enterprise, it should not be structured or named as a bank but rather as a finance company which would then be able to offer most of the services that are offered by traditional banks but without having to comply with the strict regulations as applicable to traditional banks. The dissertation’s final conclusion and recommendation was thus that an Islamic bank should operate not as a bank but as a finance company, thereby accomplishing its pivotal role to enable Muslims to use these indispensable services successfully while complying wholly with Islamic Shariah law.

Sitting head of state immunity for crimes under international law has been a very controversial issue in recent times. On the one hand, the debate bears that personal immunity has been renounced for crimes under international law. On the other hand, the advocates of personal immunity claim that the principle of immunity is still persisting under customary International law. Although the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a treaty based court, it is able to extend its jurisdiction to non-state parties to the Rome Statute through a referral by the United Nations Security Council. Lacking its own enforcement body the ICC relies on the cooperation of other states for arrest and surrender of those it indicts. The extension of the court's jurisdiction to non-state parties, such as the case of Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir, has led to the reluctance of state parties to the Rome Statue to effect arrest and surrender citing a 'dilemma between two conflicting obligations'. This paper analyses the legal status of personal immunity before different fora such as International tribunals, foreign domestic courts and under customary international law. It also critically examines the legal basis for the alleged conflicting obligations of state parties. The paper at the end concludes that there is no conflicting obligation for states parties to fully co-operate with the ICC and the lack of co-operation in the arrest and surrender of a sitting head of state is inconsistent with international law particularly with United Nation Charter and the Rome Statute.

Diese Arbeit bietet eine solide theoretische Grundlage zu Philanthropie und religiös motivierten Spendenaktivitäten und deren Einfluss auf Wohltätigkeitstrends, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und einer auf dem Gedanken der sozialen Gerechtigkeit beruhenden Philanthropie. Untersucht werden dafür die Strukturen religiös motivierte Spenden, für die in der islamischen Tradition die Begriffe „zakat“, „Waqf“ oder im Plural auch „awqaf-“ oder „Sadaqa“ verwendet werden, der christliche Begriff dafür lautet „tithes“ oder „ushour“. Aufbauend auf diesem theoretischen Rahmenwerk analysiert die qualitative und quantitative Feldstudie auf nationaler Ebene, wie die ägyptische Öffentlichkeit Philanthropie, soziale Gerechtigkeit, Menschenrechte, Spenden, Freiwilligenarbeit und andere Konzepte des zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements wahrnimmt. Um eine umfassende und repräsentative Datengrundlage zu erhalten, wurden 2000 Haushalte, 200 zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen erfasst, sowie Spender, Empfänger, religiöse Wohltäter und andere Akteure interviewt. Die so gewonnen Erkenntnisse lassen aussagekräftige Aufschlüsse über philanthropische Trends zu. Erstmals wird so auch eine finanzielle Einschätzung und Bewertung der Aktivitäten im lokalen Wohltätigkeitsbereich möglich, die sich auf mehr als eine Billion US-Dollar beziffern lassen. Die Erhebung weist nach, dass gemessen an den Pro-Kopf-Aufwendungen die privaten Spendenaktivitäten weitaus wichtiger sind als auswärtige wirtschaftliche Hilfe für Ägypten. Das wiederum lässt Rückschlüsse zu, welche Bedeutung lokale Wohltätigkeit erlangen kann, wenn sie richtig gesteuert wird und nicht wie bislang oft im Teufelskreis von ad-hoc-Spenden oder Hilfen von Privatperson an Privatperson gefangen ist. Die Studie stellt außerdem eine Verbindung her zwischen lokalen Wohltätigkeits-Mechanismen, die meist auf religiösen und kulturellen Werten beruhen, und modernen Strukturen, wie etwa Gemeinde-Stiftungen oder Gemeinde-„waqf“, innerhalb derer die Spenden eine nachhaltige Veränderung bewirken können. Daher bietet diese Arbeit also eine umfassende wissenschaftliche Grundlage, die nicht nur ein besseres Verständnis, sondern auch den nachhaltiger Aus- und Aufbau lokaler Wohltätigkeitsstrukturen in Ägypten ermöglicht. Zentral ist dabei vor allem die Rolle lokaler, individueller Spenden, die beispielsweise für Stiftungen auf der Gemeindeebene eingesetzt, wesentlich zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung beitragen könnten – und das nicht nur in Ägypten, sondern in der gesamten arabischen Region. Als konkretes Ergebnis dieser Arbeit, wurde ein innovatives Modell entwickelt, dass neben den wissenschaftlichen Daten das Konzept der „waqf“ berücksichtigt. Der Wissenschaftlerin und einem engagierten Vorstand ist es auf dieser Grundlage gelungen, die Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) zu gründen, die nicht nur ein Modell für eine Bürgerstiftung ist, sondern auch das tradierte Konzept der „waqf“ als praktikable und verbürgte Wohlstätigkeitsstruktur sinnvoll weiterentwickelt.
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

This work can be divided into two larger units. As its theme is intimately intertwined with the domain of religion, the first part of the thesis examines the Judaic Pentecost, time of omer. The second part of this thesis deals comprehensively with Christian Pentecost.

In Canada’s recent history, the cases of Kanao Inouye, Omar Khadr, and Maher Arar shed light on the relationship between citizen-rights and sovereign power, a problem which this thesis studies through its three-pronged strategy of analysis. First, it takes a postmetaphysical approach to the problem of exceptionality as it has been explored in the works of Jacques Derrida, Gianni Vattimo, and Reiner Schürmann. Their responses to the problem of exceptionality provide a framework that enables this thesis to capture the relationship between citizen-rights and sovereign power in relative detail. Second, it applies Schürmann’s epochal theory in order to offer a historical periodization of citizen-rights in Canada that highlights the effect of sovereign power on citizen-rights. Lastly, in light of its philosophical and theoretical framework, it interprets the Inouye, Khadr, Arar cases in order to account for the effect of Charter rights on sovereign power.

In Homer the virtuous and profitable activities are war, robbery, piracy, the physical suppression of the vanquished who cannot be reduced to slavery. Work is not in itself despised, but it has a lower value and belongs to another dimension of life. In this picture, two utopias relating to manual labor stand out and a story that introduces the idea of leisure. The first is in the Iliad and concerns the automatons that help Hephaestus in his blacksmith activity which Aristotle will transform into machines capable of replacing slaves. The second is embodied by Odysseus who carries out manual labor almost, to use Finley's words, if he were doing "sport". But in the Odyssey we also find the idea of a time removed from military, work and political activities dedicated to personal growth represented by the story that Odysseus tells, accompanied by the sound of the lyre, during the banquet promoted in his honor by Alcinous, king of the Phaeacians.

This paper analyzes accusations of anti-Semitism in social media disputes about presumable cases of burning cats and other animals during celebration of Lag Ba-Omer. It is shown that such accusations are employed as rhetorical devices in order to undermine opponents’ claims. The paper focuses on particulars ways of how attributions of anti-Semitism are constructed; what is more, it is demonstrated why certain statements are recognized by the audience as anti-Semitic. It should be noted that the matter of whether analyzed statements are true is not being examined; all replicas are considered only as rhetorical devices.

This chapter focuses on the genre of law codes in ancient Mesopotamia. Hammurabi authored—or more likely commissioned—one of the earliest surviving law codes in world history. Hammurabi’s code is part of a small corpus of ancient Near East writings about law that was founded on the principles contained in lexical and omen lists. The law codes of the ancient Near East show how aspects of Babylonian epistemology could be imitated by others even if they did not employ the Babylonian writing system that lay at its core. The chapter first considers the historical context of the law codes before discussing the format of these laws. The composition of law codes flourished in Babylonia in the late third and early second millennia, when four kings commissioned them: Ur-Namma and Lipit-Eshtar in the Sumerian language, Dadusha and Hammurabi in Akkadian.

El texto destaca la importancia de comprender y dialogar con los usuarios. Se ilustra con el proyecto en el barrio Omar Torrijos, Cali, donde la líder Ingrid Campaz gestiona un comedor comunitario financiado con reciclaje transportado en un triciclo. El proceso incluyó análisis de datos, interacción con la comunidad y diseño basado en necesidades identificadas. Se desarrolló un mobiliario para facilitar el transporte de insumos, mejorando la gestión del comedor y destacando la relevancia del diseño social para responder a las necesidades de las personas en contextos específicos.

Cerca de un tercio de los alimentos producidos en el mundo se pierden o son desperdiciados. Además de esto, el cambio climático y las malas prácticas agrícolas ponen en peligro la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. Por esto, el objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la Pérdida y Desperdicio de Alimentos (PDA) con respecto a la producción diaria, para la identificación de estrategias que minimicen o solucionen el PDA en las sodas del Campus Omar Dengo, Universidad Nacional. Se midió el desperdicio de alimentos en las distintas sodas con una metodología ya establecida. Se obtuvo diferencias significativas en los valores de PDA obtenidos y el tipo de población y las buenas prácticas en la cocina causan menos desperdicios de alimentos. Se concluye la importancia de trabajar con los usuarios de las sodas mediante campañas de concientización sobre PDA y a la vez contribuir al manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales.

Estudiantes de Diseño Industrial de la Universidad Autónoma de Occidente colaboraron en un proyecto de Diseño Social para mejorar las ollas comunitarias en Cali, específicamente en el barrio Omar Torrijos. Trabajando con la Fundación Aprender, crear y crecer, dirigida por Ingrid Campas Mina, el equipo se enfrentó a la falta de seguridad alimentaria en un contexto de pobreza. El diseño de una base para las ollas comunitarias fue crucial para resolver problemas como la inestabilidad y riesgos asociados con las estructuras improvisadas. El proyecto involucró escucha activa, análisis y síntesis, y co-diseño con la comunidad, resultando en la creación de la base VEA, que busca mejorar la comodidad y seguridad en la preparación de alimentos. La experiencia destaca los desafíos y aprendizajes al aplicar el Diseño Social en contextos reales, subrayando la importancia de considerar las necesidades y la participación activa de la comunidad en el proceso de diseño.

Los laboratorios de docencia de la UNA (Facultades de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales y de Tierra y Mar), generan diariamente residuos acuosos con características de peligrosidad importante, que anteriormente eran descartados por medio de la tubería, dirigidos a la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales del Campus Omar Dengo-UNA y como destino final el río Pirro. Este proyecto recolectó residuos acuosos de los laboratorios de docencia para tratarlos química y biológicamente, utilizando un módulo de tratamiento piloto. Se tomaron muestras antes y después del tratamiento, para una caracterización química y la determinación de los efectos tóxicos, mediante pruebas de toxicidad aguda con D. magna. Los resultados evidencian reducción y eliminación de muchos compuestos después del tratamiento, entre ellos el fenol. Las pruebas ecotoxicológicas reflejaron una disminución en la toxicidad en las muestras tratadas, sin embargo siguen considerándose tóxicas para organismos acuáticos como la D. magna.

This report documents the bank erosion modeling performed under Task 6 (HEC-RAS Sediment Modeling) of the Old, Mississippi, Atchafalaya, and Red (OMAR) Rivers System Technical Assessment. The objectives of the bank erosion modeling effort were to compare the relative impact various flow scenarios might have on bank retreat on a stretch of the Atchafalaya River between Simmesport, LA, and the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel. The effort included compilation of field and soil boring data, selection of bank retreat sites, creation of representative soil profiles for the reach, calibration of soil parameters to measured retreat rates, and modeling bank retreat and volume of material eroded under various flow scenarios. This modeling effort was intended for scenario comparison and should not be used as a prediction of exact rates of bank erosion. The study found that varying the amount of flow entering the Atchafalaya River from the Mississippi River could increase dramatically or significantly reduce the extent of bank erosion, relative to the current management scenario.

Perry; el Dr. Alexis Osvaldo López Tapia, investigador y director de radio y TV; el señor Rafael Nieto Loaiza, abogado, columnista y analista político; el Dr. Joseph Humire Cubides, director del Centro para una Socie- dad Libre Segura (SFS); el Dr. Jaime García Covarrubias, analista internacional; el Dr. Omar Bula Escobar, analista internacional; y la Dra. Celina B. Realuyo, profesora del Centro William J Perry. Además, contó con intervenciones magistrales por parte del Dr. Carlos Holmes Trujillo García (Q. E. P.
