Águas, Ana Sofia Nunes do Carmo. « Eucalyptus globulus Labill. regeneration from seeds in Portugal´s mainland ». Doctoral thesis, ISA/UL, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/18326.
Texte intégralEucalyptus globulus Labill. is a plant species native to SE Australia, Tasmania and adjacent islands. It was introduced in Portugal in the mid-19th century. In 2005/06, it was the most abundant tree species in 23% of the afforested area in Portugal’s mainland. Forests dominated by this species are one of the most fire-prone forest types in Portugal. This thesis was aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the naturalization process in Portugal’s mainland, with a special focus on the role of fire in this process. A multiscale approach was used to address the problem. Natural regeneration of E. globulus from seeds occurs in every natural region of the territory and may reach high densities in some locations. Spatial distribution of both wildling occurrence and density is not uniform on national (mainland), regional, local, and stand scales. The existence of seed sources (reproductive trees) is of primary importance. Climatic and soil conditions affect the broad scale distribution of this regeneration and its performance. Site quality and forest management are fundamental on a local scale. Fire clearly plays a relevant role, inducing seed release from burnt trees, providing safe microsites for plant recruitment and development, and allowing for the establishment of plants in the mid-term. Moreover, litter charring enables the early development of E. globulus in otherwise toxic conditions. Maximum wildling densities observed were 0.3 plants m-2 and 9.9 plants m-2 inside unburnt and burnt plantations, respectively. Portuguese plantations, from a region with nationally moderate levels of seminal regeneration, had mean wildling densities 3.1 times higher than Australian plantations, from seven regions either inside or outside the native range. In summary, cultivated trees are able to produce offspring, which grows, establishes and may produce seeds next to parent trees, in many parts of Portugal’s mainland. Therefore, naturalization is in progress and widespread in this territory, and fire does facilitate it

Staes, Aurore. « Essays on Firms' Private Information ». Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020EHES0091.
Texte intégralThis thesis consists of three chapters and is organized in two parts. Each part deals with a particular theoreticalissue of firms' private information. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the architecture of global warming policies and firms' private information. The first chapter analyses which global agreement can be implemented in presence of two-tiers asymmetry of information coming from both countries and domestic firms. We impose several key constraints on the design of such a regulatory policy: heterogeneity of countries, two-tier private information both at domestic and international levels and full participation. We derive the optimal first and second-best agreement. It is shown that the optimal global agreement does not always entail a uniform price for carbon. In presence of domestic firm's private information, the second-best agreement entails prices for carbon that differ from one country to another. We thereby highlight the failure of the Law of One Carbon Price. In the second part of the thesis that comprises two chapters, I study the interaction between two communication tools --- price signaling and third-party disclosure --- that firms may use to reveal their private information to consumers. The second chapter examines a third-party disclosure that consists in a certification handled by a middleman: a certifier. A monopolist has the choice between paying for that disclosure or using price to signal quality. The strategic certifier is either a for-profit entity or an entity that defends the monopolist' interest. I first show that the structure of audit costs incurred by the middlemen affects the type of monopolist that chooses certification. I then show that the characteristics of the certification ---audit probability and certification fee--- vary with the motivation of the strategic middleman. More specifically, a for-profit certifier, whenever it is possible, will not audit and put the highest feasible fee while a certifier defending the monopolist will audit with a certain probability and select the lowest possible fee. This chapter thereby contributes to a better understanding of the certification industry. The last chapter studies a third-party disclosure that consists of two steps: certification and labeling. It involves two middlemen --- the certifier and the owner of the label --- and it includes a certification fee and a price for the label. A monopolist has the choice between paying for that disclosure or signaling quality through price.I derive the disclosure when the certifier is a for-profit private entityand the label owner is private either a for-profit entity or an entity that defends the monopolist' interest. I show that, when the label owner defends the monopolist, the price of that label and the sharing of the surplus depend on the nature of certifiers' competition. In particular, I find that, a label owner defending the monopolist in order to prevent the certifier from capturing the surplus should favor competition between certifiers or, when that is not possible, monetize the label

Texte intégralThis present research explores the valuing process of art cinema through two markets, created mainly by the movie theater label “Art et Essai” in France and “Movie Theater for Art films” in South Korea. It traces the economic, political and practical inventions, which enabled quality cinema, or auteur cinema, to be formed and to gradually define the very notion of quality. Inspired by pragmatic ideas, this study addresses the collective experience of the audience that leads to the distinction between “going to the cinema” and “seeing a movie”. This comparative historical research of two different countries which have strong traditions of “quality” cinema reveals the importance of the relationship between the socio- economic construction of quality and the various dimensions invented by movie industry participants, who are interested not only in screening films, but also and notably in attracting spectators and creating their audiences.Despite the similarity of some general figures of their industry such as national films’ market share and cinema admissions per capita, they differ in three ways: the beginning and the development process of the quality film market; government subsidies for art houses by means of quality labels and their impact on the identity formation of quality films in the market; and finally the landscape of art houses today. Analyses of each country presented in turn, because of their great difference, are however following the same path: starting from the presentation of enlightening early stage of the film industry and of the first government intervention against the American invasion; entering into details about art film market creation, subsidy policy changes and implementation of different modes of distribution in movie theater market; and concluding with the present situation

The topic of global environmental protection is paid attention to day by day, since the leader all around the world signed Rio Declaration and Implementing 21 Agenda together in Brazil Rio Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The environmental consciousness of the height makes the entrepreneur expect to undertake the responsibility of environmental protection. In the global investigation at the end of 2002, the total amount of enterprises in Taiwan that have already obtained ISO 14000 environmental administrative system authentication rank the 15th in the whole world, only lag behind Japan, China, Korea S. in the whole Asia. But if consider the total amount of enterprises in the whole country, the enterprises rate that our country have already obtained authentication has been already comparable to Japan of the world. So this research adopts Data Envelopment Analysis, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and Tobit regression model to analysis the listed companies in our country that have already obtained ISO 14000 environmental administrative system authentication, whether there are apparent differences in its performance of obtaining ISO 14000 before and after verifying. The result of this research can be found obviously, no matter pollution is prevented or resources are saved, ISO 14000 environmental administrative system has very great essence contribution in environmental protection. Make use of this, we will understand further that every enterprise promotes benefit that ISO will be verified, and propose the suggestion on the management tactics.

Texte intégralThis master’s thesis reflects upon the place of analogue cinema in the new digital era of film, particularly within the avant-garde. The first chapter explores from a historical and theoretical point of view the current cinematographic trends, i.e., the status of celluloid in the context of its disappearance, whether it is as a projecting medium or at the production and postproduction stage. Facing an industry which encourages the obsolescence of celluloid (but continues to attempt to reproduce its aesthetic through digital means), there exists filmmaking collectives which continue to defend the use of film in their practice. The second chapter reveals the pluralism of cinematographic micro-laboratories which offer a form of resistance to digital domination. In order to understand the paradigm shift which occured during the 1950s and 1970s within the avant-garde we will also examine the cooperatives movement such as the Film-Maker’s Cooperative in New York and the London Filmmaker’s Coop. The cooperatives movement was above all searching for artistic autonomy, whereas comtemporary collectives dedicated to celluloid tend to ensure the preservation of an endangered practice. The third chapter proposes a case study on the Montreal film-collective Double Negative. This chapter relates the history of the collective (creation of the group during their studies at Concordia University), the specificities of their filmography (particularly their musical collaborations) as well as their devotion to the diffusion and projection of films on celluloid. Like other similar groups (Process Reversal, l’Abominable, Filmwerplaats, to name a few) the Double Negative collective paves the way to ensure the survival of the celluloid medium in cinema.
