Résumé :
A classification of patterned design on Yurok, Karok, and Hupa baskets by the crystallographic symmetry classes which structure the design elements reveals that traditional designs, designated as “ours” by Yurok, Karok, and Hupa informants were recognized by these informants as “put together right” when they were consistently structured by two symmetries, p112 and pma2. Baskets said to be “not ours” were judged as “against the law” because, although they were also frequently structured by the two traditional symmetries, they were distinguishable by the addition of new colors and motifs. Ironically, despite the increasing breakup of California Indian society by white culture, turn-of-the century white collector demand for “authentic” baskets served to preserve the structure of the traditional design system. Collector demand enabled the Indians to make a living producing baskets, but these were only traditional in some aspects (structure) while other aspects were altered so that the “sale” baskets would be clearly distinct from those they made for their own use.

Résumé :
The harsh environmental conditions coupled with a long history of overgrazing have altered the ecology of the arid Tanqua Karoo rangelands in South Africa, which necessitates rehabilitation. However, a suitable method for monitoring rangeland function over time is required for sustainable management. In this study, vegetation characteristics and landscape function indices were used to rate and compare rangeland conditions in 43 sites distributed among three vegetation types: Tanqua Karoo, Tanqua Wash Riviere, and Tanqua Escarpment Shrubland, which occupy different landscapes in the Tankwa Karoo National Park. The results showed low values of vegetation volume (mean of 10.1 m3 per 100 m−2) and low vegetated patches (mean of 29% patches vs 71% fetches). The overall landscape function indices (soil stability, water infiltration, and nutrient recycling) were low and amounted to 55%, 28%, and 17%, respectively. Amongst the various examined landscapes, the escarpment had the highest values of most of the measured landscape functionality parameters, and the open plains had the lowest values. This revealed high heterogeneity of soil properties and vegetation characteristics amongst the different vegetation types, mainly influenced by altitudinal gradients. The higher-lying landscapes on the escarpment are relatively more functional and more susceptible to improvement when compared to the lower-lying landscapes on the plains. The landscape functionality approach (LFA) approach demonstrated that some of the examined vegetation types had insignificant improvement in landscape functionality likely not to improve in the near term due to existing low patchiness, higher fetch space and low LFA indices coupled with the low annual rainfall of the region. The landscape functionality approach has provided a suitable benchmark for assessing and monitoring the diverse vegetation types in this arid part of the world.

Silalahi M, Nisyawati. 2018. The ethnobotanical study of edible and medicinal plants in the home garden of Batak Karo subethnic in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 229-238. The cultivation of plants in home gardens for self-sufficiency is a long tradition in Karo District, but the documentation of local knowledge about edible and medicinal plants in home gardens in Karo District is limited. This study aimed to (i) document the uses of the edible and medicinal plants in home gardens; (ii) to analyze the diversity of edible and medicinal plants in home gardens. Data were collected using the ethnobotanical surveys and interviews methods. The Shannon Weiner and Margalef indices were calculated to determine the diversity levels of medicinal and edible species in the home gardens of Karo ethnic. The surveys were conducted in 30 home gardens (7 villages), Karo District, North Sumatra. The 85 recorded species belonged to 43 families, and 73 genera were used as edible and medicinal plants. The plants studied in the home gardens used for human consumption were i.e. fruits, vegetables, spices, tubers and medicinal plants. Among 85 plant species growing in home gardens, 52 species were cultivated, and the rest were semi cultivated. Home gardens had the Shannon Wiener index ranging from 1.164 to 3.123 while Margalef index ranging from 0.929-2.531.

Résumé :
The purpose of this paper is to introduce new methods to measure the indirect control power of firms in complex corporate shareholding structures using the concept of power indices from cooperative game theory. The proposed measures vary in desirable properties satisfied, as well as in the bargaining models of power indices used to construct them. Hence, they can be used to produce different pictures of the coalitional strength of firms in control of other firms in mutual shareholding networks with the presence of cycles. Precisely, in the framework of Karos and Peters from 2015, ten power indices substitute the original Shapley and Shubik power index in a modular fashion. In this way, we obtain a set of new measures called aggregated indices. The float shareholders typically hold less than 5 percent of the outstanding shares, which is an uncertain element of indirect control in complex shareholding structures. The fuzzy number seems appropriate to model these shareholders’ behavior. The novelty is that we model the behavior of float using Z-fuzzy numbers. The new methods are tested in an example.

Résumé :
In the rites of seeing off the conscripts in the Kostroma and Vologda regions the Ural Federal University Toponymic expedition recorded the custom of decorating a tree at the exit from the village or hanging such a decorated tree on the pediment of a recruit’s house, and the custom of breaking or wrapping the trees tops on the edge of the village (this was done also to mark some other significant events in human life). The article shows that these customs have different origins, they were included from different sources into the recruit’s leaving rite during its formation in the 18th–19th centuries. The custom of decorating trees is a direct borrowing from the wedding ceremony and comes from the common Slavic tradition to decorate a wedding tree, symbolizing “girlish beauty”. The custom of breaking a tree top has a substratum origin and probably goes back to the tradition of the Kostroma Meria, which is reconstructed on the basis of Uralo-Yukaghir concepts about a person’s connection with a tree and the ancient custom of marking important events in human life (rites de passages) by making a personal tree by breaking off branches on coniferous trees preserved by Karelians (karsikko), Udmurts and Yukaghirs, which penetrated into North America in ancient times and was found among the Karok Indians in Northern California.

Abstract: The dissertation deals with the struggle of Arara (Karo) and the Gavião (Ikólóéhj) indigenous people against hydroelectric projects of Machado¿s River, in Rondônia, Brazil. This mobilization was initiated in the 80¿s against the project of Usina Ji-Paraná, suspended in 1993, and remains until the present day, with the resumption of the project of Usina Tabajara. Front to ELETRONORTE strategies for enabling these hydroelectric projects, based on the masking of its potential for destruction and the silencing of the popular mobilization against the dams¿ projects, the Arara and Gavião has been determined to denounce this attempt to expropriation of its territory in violation of their rights. The mobilization indigenous policies have implications beyond the anti-dam and is configured in a "cultural policy", as proposed by Alvarez, Dagnino and Escobar (2000), to the extent that Arara and Gavião contest the dominant notions of about the "development" and "nature" involved in hydroelectric projects in Machado¿s River and claim for itself a condition of equality before the ¿whites¿. For these indigenous people, the anti-dam struggle has been made in a privileged space of exposure of their demands and of questioning the condition subordinate assigned to them by whites, are setting up in fight for recognition and autonomy, in which the territory is a fundamental part

Résumé :
This chapter analyses local transformations and adaptations on the more restricted scale of single colonies. The colonies, through which the megalopolis grew, especially after Independence, are part British and part American in heritage, with local reinterpretations and certain Japanese influences. The study discusses how these colonies were established in the first place by the British in the nineteenth century and were home to the rich upper class or aristocratic English, who wished to move out of Shahjahanabad. Later on, towards the end of the colonial era, Indians and lower level government employees lived in neighbourhoods such as Jangpura, Karol Bagh and Lodi Colony. Finally, after independence, colonies became the main way of building the megalopolis. An interesting aspect in post- Independence colonies such as Malviya Nagar is that residence and industrial plots are kept within the same colony, becoming bulwarks to the concept of zoning imported by the Americans.

The Introduction sets up the primary analytic frameworks of this book, plotting, through the opening example of the spectacular dance number, “Muqabla humse na karo,” issues of labor, collaboration, and technology that film dance activates. Through attention to gesture, movement vocabulary, training, fame, and erasure, this chapter posits the need for a corporeal history of Hindi cinema that is peopled by many laboring bodies. Such a history takes into account acclaimed and invisibilized performers and celebrates a range of dancing women as co-choreographers of female mobility. The Introduction also provides a brief history of dance in pre-playback Hindi film, and a historical account of responses to the cine-corporeal transformations wrought by dance in Indian cinema.

Résumé :
Masato Matsugi of Meijo University showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 7905) that over five iterations, the fluorous-tagged Ru catalyst 1b was readily recovered and reused for the cyclization of 2 to 3. Hengquan Yang of Shanxi University reported (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 8659) that the Hoveyda catalyst 1a encapsulated in mesoporous SBA-1 could also be reused several times. Jean-Marie Basset of KAUST Catalysis Center, Régis M. Gauvin of Université Lille, and Mostafa Taoufik of Université Lyon 1 described (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 8944) a W catalyst on silica that was also active for alkene metathesis. Reto Dorta of the University of Zurich, exploring several alternatives, found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 15179) that only 4c cyclized cleanly to 5. Karol Grela of the Polish Academy of Sciences showed (Synlett 2010, 2931) that 3-nitropropene (not illustrated) participated in cross-metathesis when catalyst 1c was used. Shawn K. Collins of the Université de Montré al complexed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 12790) 6 with a quinolinium salt to direct paracyclophane formation. Min Shi of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry incorporated (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4462) the cyclopropene 8 in cross-metathesis, to give 10. A. Srikrishna of the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) constructed (Synlett 2010, 3015) the cyclooctenone 12 by ring-closing metathesis. LuAnne McNulty of Butler University established (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 6001) that a cyclic boronic half acid 15, prepared by ring-closing metathesis, coupled with an iodoalkene 16 to deliver the diene 17 with high geometric control. Gowravaram Sabitha of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, en route to (+)-anamarine 21, observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 5736) that the tetraacetate 18b would not participate in cross-metathesis. Fortunately, 18a , an earlier intermediate in the synthesis, worked well. Stephen F. Martin of the University of Texas prepared (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 3622) (±)-pseudotabersonine 24 by way of a spectacular metathesis that converted 22 to 23. Ring-closing alkyne metathesis was a key step in the total synthesis of lactimidomycin 27 reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 14064) by Alois Fürstner of the Max-Planck- Institut Mülheim.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT We have reprocessed, re-imaged, and interpreted 10000+ km of legacy 2D seismic data in the Seychelles, particularly in the western part of the Plateau. Seychelles data have been difficult to image, particularly for the Mesozoic section: volcanics are a major attenuator of low frequency signal, and a hard water bottom contributes to signal problems. Enhanced low frequency techniques were applied to improve the signal fidelity in the 4 to 20 Hz range, and to remove spectral notches of shallow geologic origin. These efforts have allowed a reasonable view of the structure of the Plateau to a depth equivalent to about 3.5 sec TWT, and permit a comparison of areas atop the Plateau to the south coast where the three 1980's Amoco wells were drilled. It is clear that the main Plateau area of the Seychelles (excluding the outlying territories) is comprised of several separate basins, each with similar Karoo, Cretaceous, and Cenozoic sections that relate to the East African and West Indian conjugate margins, but the basins each have nuanced tectono-stratigraphic histories. The previously recognized Correira Basin in the SE and the East and West South Coast Basins face the African conjugate margin; other unimaged ones complete the periphery of the Plateau. The interior of the Plateau is dominated by the Silhouette Basin to the west of the main islands and the Mahé Basin to the east. The co astal basins have harsh tectono-thermal histories comparable to other continental margins around the world; they are typically characterized by stretching, subsidence and breakaway from their respective conjugate margins. In contrast the interior basins are comparable to ‘failed’ rift systems such as the North Sea or the Gulf of Suez. The South Coastal Basins, for example, tend to be more extended which complicated interpretation of the Amoco wells, but they have significant upside, as exemplified by the Beau Vallon structure. The interior basins, on the other hand, have typically simpler structure: the Silhouette Basin contains a system of NW-trending linked normal faults that could easily harbor North Sea-sized hydrocarbon traps with a variety of rift-related reservoir possibilities. Bright, reflective, hard volcanic horizons are less common than usually presumed, but most of the basins may contain considerable pyroclastic material in parts of the section. All of the basins appear to be predominantly oil prone, with considerable upside prospectivity.
