Résumé :
The symptom “fever” is generally not itself a terminal condition. However, it does occur with common mild to severe ailments afflicting the world population. Several allopathic medicines are available to attenuate fever by targeting the pathogen or the symptom itself. However, many people in marginal civilizations are obligated to use locally grown medicinal plants due to limited access to common pharmaceuticals. The Karen ethnic group is the biggest ethnic minority group in the hill-tribes of Thailand. They utilise a vast repertoire of medicinal plant species. Since many modern drugs were discovered out of traditional therapies, it is possible to discover new allopathic drugs in the treatment of fever and associated pathogens from the Karen people. Thus, this study aims to identify and record the ethnomedicinal plants they used for the treatment of “fever”. The names of plants used by the Thai Karen people for the treatment of fever were mined from publications on ethnomedicinal uses. Useful plant species and families were identified using the Cultural Importance Index (CI). With the mined data, 125 plant species from 52 families were identified, distributed across 25 Karen villages. A chemical cross-examination of these species provided valuable insights into chemical classes worthy of further investigation in the context of fever and associated pathogens.

Humans are the most fascinating creatures, unique, multi-dimensional creatures, all-encompassing, open-minded, and have great potential. Therefore, Karen Horny (Psychology expert), said that "quality people are people who have been able to balance the impulses in themselves, as to realize harmonious behavior. He is able to connect with his environment, able to create safe and harmonious. He is not aggressive, does not alienate himself from his environment, and his life does not depend on others. "In the Qur'an, humans are repeatedly elevated because of the positive actualization of their minds; Al-Qur'an says that human beings are "hanif" which is inclined to the truth, monotheism of God, and other noble values. The verses of Al-Qur’an which explain humanity are of very high quality. The terms or verses are interrelated and explain each other. So, if you take one of the terms of the terms used by Al-Qur’an, then the description will complement each other and be characteristic of the others. It can be said that the concepts and characteristics of human quality are not single, but are comprehensive and complementary.

Résumé :
Cassander’s implementation of power during the early stages of his rule of Macedonia was wide ranging and multifaceted. He employed numerous different strategies to gain support from a variety of influential groups within the Macedonian homeland and adjacent areas to secure his position. Much of the discussion surrounding Cassander’s actions to accomplish control over Macedonia has focussed on his desire to become the next king in Macedonia as demonstrated by overt public actions, a feat he achieved after the Peace of 311. However, when one considers the coinage issued by Cassander prior to 311, this single-minded monarchic aim appears less evident, calling into question the strength of this understanding of his actions.

Buys, Karina. « Networking practices among diverse cultures and generations at a Gauteng mine / Karina Buys ». Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/6922.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Business management is characterised by fast and ever–expanding development. Culture and generation play an increasingly important role in the management of businesses worldwide. Although studies have been conducted on the subjects of culture and generation, little attention has been paid to culture and generation as a combination of diversity characteristics. As more managers are realising the challenges that arise when managing diverse work environments, the modern manager must question old assumptions about how diverse people work together. In this modern age, it is important to understand diversity issues on all levels of management. Networks are based on people's backgrounds, and understanding the link between networking and diversity is becoming increasingly important. In a culturally complex country such as South Africa, experiencing the impact of diversity on a daily basis can be anticipated. Culture and generation are two terms that encompass all dimensions of diversity. This study investigates the different networking practices found among diverse cultural and generational groups at a Gauteng mine. The generational classification used in this study is based on the fact that generations differ from country to country; therefore, the classification used in this study is relevant to South African generations. Seven hypotheses were formulated pertaining to differences among cultural and generational groups with regard to networking practices. Furthermore, four cultural–generational groups were identified, namely Black Generation X'ers, Black Baby Boomers, White Generation X'ers and White Baby Boomers. Data was collected from Kusasalethu mine employees. The original sample frame comprised 3630 employees from which a sample was chosen that complied with the criteria for culture, age / generation and education. A total of 1046 employees remained from which the sample elements were chosen by making use of probability, systematic proportionate stratified sampling. Self–completion questionnaires were used for collecting the data. A total of 289 questionnaires were completed which constituted a 100% response rate. The questionnaire used was intended to obtain feedback from respondents regarding their cultural and generational diversity, as well as preferences pertaining to their networking practices. The results from the survey were used to determine the differences between diverse cultures and generations with regards to networking practices. The findings, supported by the rejection of the first null–hypothesis, indicated that there are indeed a number of salient differences between Black Generation X'ers, Black Baby Boomers, White Generation X'ers and White Baby Boomers. Specifically, the results indicated that White Baby Boomers incline to rarely use the medium of SMS when networking while this group also makes use of telephones when networking more often than Black Generation X'ers. Furthermore, Black Baby Boomers more frequently use e–mails when networking while Black Generation X'ers indicated that they rarely use e–mail as network medium. It was found that White Baby Boomers make use of one–on–one face–to–face methods more often when networking than Black Generation X'ers and White Generation X'ers. The largest number of differences was between Black Generation X'ers and White Baby Boomers. The respondents all indicated that they incline to value good relationships at work highly, that they agree that informal work environments are conducive to more effective networking practices, that they frequently have good influences on their families and that they network more during spare time than at work. The results also indicated that the mediums that are used most often when networking include the cell phone and one–on–one face–to–face methods. Respondents tended to rate sharing experiences and exchanging work ideas as very important aims for networking. By dividing diverse workforces into smaller, more manageable units or homogeneous groups, diversity management can be simplified. This is an ability for which managers can be trained and which should be applied correctly within a business environment. In view of the results, it is recommended that managers of diverse workforces should identify different generations and cultures as a way to manage them more effectively. Furthermore, managers should ensure that work environments that are conducive to good relationship building and informality need to be created. Additionally, conflict between Black Generation X'ers and White Baby Boomers should be handled cautiously with a view to ensure that effective solutions are achieved to such conflicts. Preferences with regard to network mediums should be noted, as such awareness may lead to more effective networking / communication within businesses. Management's approach to meetings needs to be reviewed for each group, because differences exist in terms of preferences in this regard. A working environment conducive to exchanging ideas and experiences should be created. Lastly, as all groups value good relationships at work, a climate that encourages openness and conflict resolution should be created.

Hayward, Karen. « The fear of the Lord as key pastoral guidance, for a healing ministry to survivors of generational ritual abuse / by Karen Hayward ». Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4405.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Generational ritual abuse within satanic or fertility (abusive witchcraft) cults is a controversial subject. This study shows that, while not all reported memories may be true, False Memory Syndrome is not an intrinsic scientific reality of generational ritual abuse. Recent publications under the editorial pens of Noblitt and Perskin Noblitt (2008), as well as Sachs and Galton (2008), describe the types of abuse and torture perpetrated in various forms of ritual abuse (including the results of a worldwide survey), together with the psychological, interpersonal and spiritual damage it caused survivors. It also speaks of the legal difficulties of survivors, the motives of perpetrators and the difficulties experienced with disappearing evidence (sometimes deliberately, otherwise because it does not fit the known legal paradigm). Survivors of generational ritual abuse suffer from what can be described under DESNOS (Disorders of Extreme Stress - Not Otherwise Specified), which is supported by research whilst not yet a formal DSM diagnostic category. Prolonged interpersonal trauma, involving multiple events lead to alterations of affect and impulses: in attention or consciousness; in self-perception; in relationships with other; in systems of meaning; as well as somatisation. Most often it results in dissociative disorders of which the most common is DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) in which a person exhibits two or more distinct identities or personality states which recurrently take control of his or her behaviour. Various other diagnostic-related factors are discussed in this study, together with major paradigms for considering DID. These paradigms include the ego-state theory (referred to briefly), structural dissociation and attachment theory. These models' intervention strategies are also discussed. Models from three Christian psychologists are discussed - those of Joubert, Friesen and Wilder (a community model) - and Hawkins and Hawkins' pastoral model is reviewed as well. "The fear of the Lord" is found to be the reverential awe with which a believer approaches God; linked closely to the love of God; a fear that is advocated over the fear of human enemies or circumstances and which then dispels the latter; an emotion of fear that is experienced when confronted, as sinful human being, with God's presence and attributes such as his holiness; advocated by Jesus and Paul as based upon God's judgment, after which he may cast one into hell - and thus, one is not to fear what man could do unto one, or should not depart from God and continue in wilful sin. Ps. 86 contains a prayer for a united heart that the psalmist may fear God, linked to walking in his truth and praising God for deliverance from the grave. While "the fear of the Lord" is not a healing model in and of itself (various models of intervention can be used in the healing journey as found in the literature study), it guides the stance of the community, the pastoral counsellor (or other helper) as well as the survivors of generational ritual abuse who turn to God. It was found to form a doorway into the covenant relationship (or intimate relationship) with God in Scripture, and it is argued that, as such, it will help to lead survivors away from negative or destructive fear-bonded relationships (in Wilder's terms) into love-bonded relationships with God and others, thus leading to fulfilment of the command 'to love God with all one's heart, soul and strength and others as oneself' (Dt. 6; Mrk. 12:29-31). To this end, it aids the pastoral healing goal of a growing relationship with God and increasing maturity. Using the models of Heitink, Osmer and Hurding, the insights gained in this study are applied to the guidelines and proposed model for pastoral intervention.

Bartram, Lorna.

Adapting the concept of the ”popular cultural memory” and its necessary “context knowledge” established by Karin Kukkonen, this bachelor thesis seeks to examine how this memory is “at work” and expresses itself in contemporary fiction, by doing an intertextual reading of the swedish author Amanda Svensson's debut Hey Dolly. Within the intertextual structures of Hey Dolly the reader encounters allusions and references that address almost everything from contemporary popular culture to established authors in the swedish canon, mainly as means for the characters to help them express their emotions and thoughts, by “choosing” from already available content of popular culture to use and modify. The intertextuality alluding to the popular cultural memory does at the same time address the concept of the ideal reader throughout the novel. This ideal reader is addressed by the narrator as one of those “in the know”, as competent enough to see this “popular cultural memory” at work in the novel by “getting” these intertextual allusions and references. Thus any (real) reader has to be equipped with the same expertise of popular culture as the narrator in order to fully understand this intertextuality. The intertextual practices of Hey Dolly should be understood as traits used by the author to express and implicate her/his awareness of the texts “surroundings”, traits indeed found even in the name of Hey Dolly's main protagonist, symptomatically influenced from contemporary, western American commercial culture. Given the premiss where this intertextual framework relies on a heavily contemporary influenced popular cultural context, it potentially would run the risk of not being understood, should future popular culture contexts operate under different premisses. In this regard the high cultural canon memory would have to be regarded as being more stable and “reliable” than the popular cultural memory, as the norms for the canon are more fixed and rarely negotiated.  Arguing that this intertextual reading of Hey Dolly is of an immense value and significant for understanding how the Zeitgeist operates and should be approached, this thesis is still based on the premiss where the intertextual reading of Hey Dolly has largely been nonexistent when looking at how Hey Dolly has been received. Instead in the swedish media we find a consistent dominance of how its reception has been read from almost exclusively a gendered point of view, where Hey Dolly is seen and regarded as the forthcoming of a new representation of the girl/woman ideal. The intertextual reading of Hey Dolly would instead be regarded as “secondary” at best, where the story by itself is self sufficient, even if the reader lacks the necessary context knowledge of how this ”popular cultural memory” is at work in the text.

Botha, Pieter Willem Stephanus Knox. « The mineralogy and geochemistry of the Rooikoppies iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite body, Karee Mine, Bushveld Complex, South Africa ». Diss., 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25446.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
At the Karee Mine of the Lonplats mining company in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, the Rooikoppies iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite (IRUP), which covers the stratigraphy from below the UG2 chromitite layer up to the Main Zone, replaces cumulus anorthosite and pyroxenite. The Rooikoppies IRUP was studied using transmitted and reflected light microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe techniques. Two visually different varieties of IRUP were observed: a) a relatively smaller grained greyish variety and b) a relatively coarser grained greenish variety. In drill core, the IRUP body was observed to be in contact with the host cumulate rocks either by means of gradual or sharp contacts. Bulk rock compositions indicate that the Rooikoppies IRUP is enriched in Fe2O3, MgO, and CaO (relative to the cumulate host rocks) while having lower concentrations of Al2O3. Chemical differences between cumulus host rocks and IRUP are accompanied by changes in mineral assemblage and mineral chemistry. Spatially related IRUP samples revealed areas with potentially more pronounced increases in iron and magnesium contents relative to the host cumulate rocks. Element ratios indicate that aluminium acted as an immobile element during the formation of the IRUP body and that the addition of iron, magnesium, and calcium, through the action of hydrothermal fluids, diluted the already existing cumulus feldspar, resulting in the low concentrations of Al2O3 in the IRUP samples. The addition of iron, magnesium, and calcium also resulted in the crystallization of large proportions of clinopyroxene and olivine, and resulted in changes in the mineral assemblage and mineral chemistry, relative to the host cumulate rocks. The Rooikoppies IRUP body can be classified as a silicate rich variety (Viljoen and Scoon, 1985), consisting of clinopyroxene, olivine, plagioclase, secondary magnetite and ilmenite. It is suggested that the formation of the Rooikoppies IRUP is not due to a single event, but rather that the IRUP body formed through multiple replacement events, resulting in a network of chemically different zones within one large IRUP body.

Résumé :
This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's growing interest in the human mind during the war years and how it reflected in his writings. As he embarked on an exploration of personality disorders, Bradbury discovered Karen Horney's The Neurotic Personality of Our Time (1937). Horney's book enabled Bradbury to understand the often destructive cycle of anxiety and hostility that underlies all neuroses. His characters, both in his genre fiction and in the broader fantasy fiction that followed, represent the full range of neurotic behavioral manifestations. This chapter discusses Bradbury's readings related to psychology, including Charles Jackson's The Lost Weekend, recommended to him by Henry Kuttner. It also considers Bradbury's incorporation of a wide range of psychoanalytical scenes into his stories and novels as he continued to search for answers to two questions: how do we know what is real, and how do we know what is human?

Résumé :
The flint mine in Bębło is situated in the Ojców Upland within the Olkusz Upland, above the Kluczwoda, Bolechówka and Bębłówka river valleys. Its vast mining field lies on a slope of a crest facing south-east, rising above a small valley, now dry but once crossed by a watercourse, to a height of approx. 30 metres. In the late 5th millennium BC, irregular flint concretions were extracted there through small shallow pits located one next to the other and reaching the bottom of karst karren. The nature, function and relative chronology of Site 4 in Bębło are crucial to the analysis of flint mining and reduction techniques in southern Poland in the middle phase of the Lengyel culture. They can also prove useful in tracing the relationship between the local technological changes and the influx of new ideas linked with the “second stage of the Neolithization in the Polish territories”.

Résumé :
This chapter marks the start of the Karen Revolution and the start of Saw Ralph's journey as a soldier. At Karen New Year on December 29, 1948, a number of bursts of rifle fire and automatic gunfire were directed at the Karen quarters in Insein. That was the beginning of the revolution. While his family was preparing to evacuate, Saw Ralph snuck out to the front line without their knowledge. He craved adventure. After receiving a gun, Saw Ralph went to the front line with his coworkers, thus beginning his career as a soldier at the battle of Insein—the first major battle of the Karen Revolution. He was eighteen years old. He had made up his mind that he would stay until he died or could no longer fight. He was there at the very beginning of the revolution, in that first life-changing battle, and he stayed for the next five decades.

Résumé :
Abstract Hume’s view of justice was criticized by three other notable Scottish philosophers, all of whom nevertheless recognized his pre-eminence as a thinker. Lord Karnes and Thomas Reid both attacked Hume’s thesis that justice is artificial. Adam Smith said nothing about that but criticized the view that justice depends on utility, clearly having Hume in mind but without naming him. Henry Home, Lord Karnes, a kinsman of Hume, reached distinction as a judge and jurist, and some reputation as a moral philosopher. HisEssays on the Principles of Morality and Natural Religion, first published in 1751 with a revised second edition in 1758, include a chapter (Essay II, ch. 7) on justice and injustice, designed to refute Hume’s view in theTreatisethat justice is an artificial virtue. Surprisingly for a judge, Karnes begins by defining justice almost as narrowly as Hume: ‘Justice is that virtue which guards property, and gives authority to covenants.’ But perhaps this is simply because his purpose in that chapter is to criticize Hume and so he can confine himself to those aspects of justice discussed by Hume. Earlier references to justiceen passantin chapter 3 suggest the wider, though vaguer, view that justice is ‘abstaining from injury’.

Résumé :
In “Radical Interpretation” (1974), David Lewis asked: by what constraints, and to what extent, do the non-intentional, physical facts about Karl determine the intentional facts about him? There are two popular approaches: the reductive externalist program and the phenomenal intentionality program. I argue against both approaches. I will agree with friends of phenomenal intentionality that reductive externalists neglect the role of our internally determined conscious experiences in grounding intentionality, but I will fault them for not adequately explaining intentionality. They cannot just say “conscious experience explains it” and leave it at that. However, I will sketch an alternative multistage account incorporating ideas from both camps. In particular, by appealing to Lewisian ideas, we can explain how Karl’s conscious experiences help to ground the contents of his other mental states.

Résumé :
The flint mine in Bębło is situated in the Ojców Upland within the Olkusz Upland. The non-invasive exploration of the site has confirmed the presence of two separate sections: the workshop zone and the mining zone. The former zone covers a flat area in the upper part of the crest, containing many flint items, e.g. cores. Magnetic and geoelectrical anomalies have marked an area of low resistivity on the south-eastern slope of the crest. Moreover, the surface survey has detected numerous natural fragments of flint concretions and limestone rubble. Intensive farming has levelled traces of mine shafts on the surface, but it may be assumed that the mining zone coincided with the part of the site located on the slope. The microwear analysis and technological examination have shown that apart from items used in mining and stone processing, the collection includes tools intended for other activities. The mine and the workshops, therefore, seem to have been accompanied by a settlement that has not been uncovered as yet. The typological and technological analysis based on the principles of dynamic classification adapted to mined flint material has led to the description of the stages and methods of core reduction. The identified techniques of flint knapping used by prehistoric communities in mine workshops have helped to determine the chronology of settlement at the unstratified site in Bębło. No traces of flint industries older than the middle phase of the Lengyel culture (the Modlnica group) have been detected, and the isolated items dating evidently from a later period (a polished tetrahedral axe) are unrelated to the core workshops.

Résumé :
Data mining in graph databases has received much attention. We have witnessed many algorithms proposed for mining frequent graphs. Inokuchi, Washio, and Nishimura (2002) and Karpis and Kumar (1998) introduce the Apriori-like algorithms, AGM and FSG, to mine the complete set of frequent graphs. However, both algorithms are not scalable as they require multiple scans of databases and tend to generate many candidates during the mining process. Subsequently, Yan and Han (2002) and Nijssen and Kok (2004) propose depth-first graph mining approaches called gSpan and Gaston, respectively. These approaches are essentially memory-based and their efficiencies decrease dramatically if the graph database is too large to fit into the main memory.

Résumé :
Abstract This chapter addresses present-day understandings among Indigenous miners in Bolivia of silver and silver mining under Spanish colonialism. It is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Sud Lípez province, the site of a silver boom in the seventeenth century. While colonial silver mining was exploitative of Indigenous labour, present-day miners regard this period as having been a time of plenty, when silver was pure and flowed freely as a liquid. Using Karen Barad’s notion of agential realism and Marisol de la Cadena’s insights into the inseparability of humans and non-humans in Andean ayllus, the chapter argues that silver is always entangled with those who mine it, but the inherent relationship binding one to the other is not always the same. A local myth offers insights into a transformation in the relationship between miners and metal following a catastrophic event that brought colonial mining to a close and has left present-day miners unable to work the mines profitably.

Résumé :
This chapter details Keith Jarrett's solo piano recital at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, as well as Karen Finley's performance at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, assessing why there is so much coughing at live performances. One of the sources of art's value is that it provides an opportunity to pay attention and perceive what, after all, may require quite an effort to make sense of or appreciate. Art is an opportunity to cultivate in ourselves the ability to comprehend and perceive what is going on. Even the performers have trouble staying focused. This brings out what is all too obvious—namely, that the audience too is performing, and that the audience too is on display. People cough at live performances because they are uncomfortable, uncertain, very often bored out of their minds, and under pressure not to cough. Audiences cough to remind the artist that they are there and to let the artist know that they are uncomfortable. Artists and audiences both need to acknowledge that this discomfort is not a bad thing. In fact, it is what the audience is paying for.

Résumé :
This chapter reviews the developments in yoga psychology. While the Yoga Sūtras are pre-eminently psychological in nature, the treatment of psychological phenomena has been attempted from the perspective of self-realization. The functional mind (citta) comprises not only cognitive, affective and conative processes (Karmas), but also contains instinctual tendencies (vāsanās) that are inherited from previous lives as subliminal-impressions (samskāras). These vāsanās and samskāras tend to colour our cognitions and predispose us to behave in certain ways. The chapter critically analyses these key concepts and situates them in contemporary psychological context. A brief description of the Jaina and Buddhist yoga systems and other varieties of yoga that are prevalent today is also provided. Finally, a review of the empirical studies is presented that showcases the mundane and incorporeal aspects of yoga psychology and outlines several issues for further investigation.

Abstract I am not supposed to be writing these words today. A few years ago, I might not have been able to understand them. That I have memories to share—that I am alive at all—is a medical miracle. If you are reading this book, it is because you want to make miracles like mine possible. To conquer viruses, you will need to understand the other chapters in this book. To heal people—to connect with their hearts— you will need to read the next few pages. You need, in short, to know my story. My name is Karen, and I have AIDS. Apparently, that was discovered on Friday, March 7, 1997. But I don’t remember that day, or for that matter much of the previous four months. I can only tell this story with the help of my family’s memories. The first time I thought something might be wrong was mid-December. I was trying to recover from a case of ‘strep’ throat and thought all I needed was a few days’ bed rest, which my schedule as a teacher—Christmas break was approaching—would soon accommodate.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT: Underground stone mines are often prone to karst formations created by the gradual erosion of carbonate rocks due to groundwater flow. The prevalent fracture network in these stone deposits offers favorable conditions for acidic dissolution, which leads to the formation of large karst cavities. The interaction of these cavities with the extensive presence of discontinuities is the major cause of ground control problems encountered during stone mining operations. This paper presents a case study for analyzing the effect of the karst cavity on the strength of a pillar in an underground room-and-pillar stone mine. Numerical analyses show that the presence of these voids in a pillar contributes to a considerable decrease in load-bearing capacity. Any development through excavation or blasting into the affected areas may pose a safety hazard to the miners. Apart from that, this may also disrupt production and burden the pre-planned mine operations. The study for estimating pillar strength using numerical modeling could provide a pragmatic approach to designing future pillars affected by karsts. The shape and volume of the karst cavities inside the concerned pillar were approximated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. LiDAR scans were performed to map the discontinuity network around the pillars, and Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) technique was implemented to simulate the joint network in the pillar’s rock mass. The behavior of the pillar with the increase in axial compressive stress was observed with the help of Distinct-element modeling (DEM) using 3DEC software. The pillar’s rock mass is simulated using Elastic and Mohr-Coulomb constitutive models. Two scenarios are presented to assess the pillar strength with and without the presence of karst. Pillar strength is compared to the estimated current stress levels to understand the potential for improvement in the pillar design. The research emphasizes the importance of pillar design while maximizing safety and production in underground stone mines with karst cavities to prevent pillar instability or local roof failures.
