Résumé :
An Innovative company can apply new thinking faster than its competitors or surprise its customers by offering products that makes the customers first realize its need and then consume it. There are substantial evidence stating the positive impact of innovation in the automotive industry; however, corresponding research is lacking on the two-wheeler industry which is growing at a healthy pace. The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of innovation in a two-wheeler company and to analyse its influence in the growth of such companies.  Two research questions are addressed: What role does innovation play in the firms' product portfolio management? Does innovation lead to increased sales and market share for a company? The thesis is based on a case study of Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL). Starting with a focus on the theme and motives involved in marketing of its products, the study revolves around the trends of innovation in the core business and its contribution to BAL’s success. Central to this report is the innovative ways employed by BAL to maintain a balanced portfolio followed by the comparison of the BAL’s sales growth with the Indian two-wheeler industry over the years and also the increase in market share of BAL in the same period. The descriptive part of “Bajaj Auto Ltd” is based on interviews via e-mail with management staffs and employees plus revenue data of the company. In addition the analysis builds upon secondary data from various sources of references like, journals, news paper reports, internet and articles. The results from the case company have been used together with a theoretical framework to explain the empirical patterns. From just taking a cue from the market trend to fine tuning a product’s operational efficiency, Bajaj Auto was not only able to sustain in the market but is able to compete with the leader in the two-wheeler segment in India. The world had a lot of offer and Bajaj gladly grabbed the opportunity by precisely managing innovation in all its business activities. Being intuitive and proactive in understanding the changing needs of the market has made this possible for BAL. Conclusively, the findings suggest that Innovation is proving to be a critical entity in a business firm and managing it effectively certainly favours the company in leaping ahead in times of competition.

Conclusion : The organization structure and coordination should  be concerned in multinational corporations. Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. as a multinational Japanese company who runs business and establishes various subsidiaries in worldwide mostly centralizes power to headquarters. Also, Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. applied means of formal and informal coordination in order to cooperate between Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. (headquarters) and Thai Tokai Carbon Product Co., Ltd (Thai subsidiaries) & Tokai Carbon Tianjin Co., Ltd. (Chinese subsidiaries). With respect to formal and informal mechanisms, these two mechanisms are similarly implemented in collaboration between headquarters and Thai & Chinese subsidiaries. Nonetheless, there are a few differences on informal tools in form of lateral relations and socialization.

Résumé :

This thesis examines how cultural diversity within an organization might influence managers‟ information-handling process. The models used are; Geert Hofstede‟s five dimensions of national culture, to represent the cultural diversity; and Henry Mintzberg‟s definition of the manager‟s informational roles, to represent the managers‟ information-handling.To show this empirically, a case study of a half-Swedish, half-Vietnamese-owned retail company, UMA Ltd Co, was conducted. This company is situated in Vietnam and employs a range of different nationalities. Interviews were conducted with seven of UMA‟s managers to gain an understanding of their opinions concerning their informational roles, as well as to identify issues and benefits within the company caused by the cultural diversity. The results of the interviews revealed some relevant cultural issues and benefits of working in a culturally diverse company. It was evident through the analysis, in which the cultural dimensions were applied onto the informational roles, that there are a number of problems at UMA in need of repair. For instance, differences in employees‟ perception of the power distance dimension seem to affect how information is spread and gained. This is also caused by the unclear organizational structure of the company, where employees, instead of realizing who they are obliged to answer to, rather follow their culturally given hierarchical system. Further issues caused by the cultural diversity at UMA are presented in the conclusion of this thesis.

Smith, Etienne Roche. « A critical analysis of current vs proposed risk underwriting and claims management procedures at Sasguard Insurance Company Ltd ». Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/847.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since its inception in 1998 as a wholly owned captive insurer, Sasguard has successfully supplied the short-term insurance needs of its parent company, Pioneer Foods Pty Ltd. Although the financial results of Sasguard increased steadily over this entire period, the insurer has never investigated the quality of its service regarding the perceptions of its internal support staff, who represent Sasguard to its client Pioneer. The objective of this research report was to critically analyse the insurer’s current risk underwriting and claims management procedures to determine if the current situation was acceptable and if not, to present proposals to reduce costs and to supply Sasguard’s internal clients (members of the parent company) with a better service. The tasks that were completed for this report were: • a literature study on aspects of risk management directly applicable to Sasguard; • critical analysis of the current risk underwriting and claims management procedures; • identification of shortcomings in the current structure; • collection of responses from internal support staff members by an electronic questionnaire; • critical analysis of those responses; and • proposals which Sasguard can implement to address identified shortcomings. The questionnaire was posted on Pioneer’s intranet site, and the entire population of 30 members was notified by email to complete and submit it within a specified period. Twenty-eight staff members did, with two on leave, for a 93% response rate. The responses were analysed in detail to form the basis of the empirical investigation. They were compared to the writer’s own observations, and together were used to develop conclusions and recommendations which Sasguard can implement in future to reduce both risk and costs associated with claims submitted by its internal clients. The main findings follow. Not enough representatives are at management level. Most (89%) want to increase their background knowledge of insurance, mainly through Sasguard. They want a paperless system to view claims. They were divided on whether to establish a workshop to recover parts of disused vehicles; more study is needed. They want to simplify the process of getting quotes and thus facilitating claims. They want better two-way communication. They favoured using the claims history of a branch, along with other forms of reward, to motivate supervisors and drivers, and others, to reduce the accident rate. The issue of whether out-sourced drivers have increased accident claims needs more study. Indeed, the legal employment status of out-sourced drivers needs to be addressed. Most of the internal client representatives were satisfied with the speed of claims settlement, but nearly a third were not entirely satisfied, which the researcher interprets as a cause for concern. Furthermore, one fourth would consider moving to a traditional insurer; this perception also is worrying and can be addressed, possibly through better understanding of the captive insurer and its practices. Proposals followed from the findings, hopefully to be implemented in due course. While results cannot be generalised, they can be provide insight to other captive insurers, especially those in a manufacturing environment similar to that at Pioneer Foods.

This paper also tried to find out if there is any direct link between internal control and CSR with a company being sustainable and profitable. Our study showed Boeing’s proper adaptation of COSO framework and CS model. Nevertheless, the study could not suggest any clear connection of internal control and CSR as a key mean for sustainability or profitability. However, a clear rise in goodwill has pointed out in the paper that could be a key outcome from effective internal control and CSR.

Perry, Shannon. « The Eastman Kodak Co. and the Canadian Kodak Co. Ltd : re-structuring the Canadian photographic industry, c.1885-1910 ». Thesis, De Montfort University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/13060.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Within the accepted historiography of photography, the importance of George Eastman and the Eastman Kodak Company (EKC) has become unassailable. They have been placed as the key, and often sole, agent in “revolutionizing” the amateur photography market in the late nineteenth century. While the photographic landscape and market of 1885-1914 was indeed radically altered, the historiographical dominance of what can be identified as the “Kodak story” has obscured the means through which EKC’s successful re-structuring of the existing manufacturing and distribution networks of photographic materials occurred. I argue that the changes effected by Eastman and the EKC began not with imaging desires, but with their acknowledgment, and profound understanding of the existing and competing interests within the photographic industry. This thesis focuses on the EKC’s re-structuring of the extant and evolving communities involved in the manufacturing and distribution of photographic materials in Canada between 1885-1910. Focusing particularly on the period immediately surrounding the establishment of the Canadian Kodak Co. Limited in 1899, I demonstrate the re-structuring processes at work, including: market and financial diversification; governmental lobbying; purchase and mergers; and other business and marketing-based strategies. I frame my theoretical positions and analysis of network re-structuring through the experiences of Ottawa professional photographer and photographic business owner William James Topley (active 1868-1907), and CKCoLtd manager John Garrison Palmer (active 1886-1921). Topley and Garrison’s professional experiences and interactions with expanded communities of photographic consumers and industry participants provide an opportunity for specific and detailed findings which challenge understandings of the evolution of the practice of photography during this transitional period. In doing so, I provide evidence of the primary role network re-structuring played in the EKC’s ability to shape the wider international photographic industry to their advantage in the early twentieth century.

Mergers and acquisitions are important ways for multinational companies to expand and grow their business. This thesis studies the role of product management in the success of mergers and acquisitions by analyzing Eaton's 2008 Phoenixtec Power Company Ltd. acquisition. Using public information, market reports, internal documents and insider interviews, I explore four components of product management in the integration process, including product portfolio management, sales and marketing reorganizations, channel integration and brand architecture. For each component, the objectives of the integration, the methodology used by Eaton and the outcomes are examined. Moreover, the performance of the merged company in terms of sales revenue, profitability, market share, customer satisfaction and employee engagement are analyzed to demonstrate the overall success of this acquisition. My thesis ends with findings and recommendations for building a standard framework to align activities with strategic drivers, maintaining competitive advantages of the acquired company, leveraging the acquired resources to enhance overall capabilities, and respecting and motivating individual talent with local know-how.

Résumé :
In order for a company to operate effectively it needs to have sufficient capital, structured to such an extent that capital charge in the form of interest cost and required return is minimised. A strong capital base lays the foundation for the ability to generate revenue by implementation and management of a well laid out strategy to trade in either goods or services. Capital is a depletable resource and usually limited in respect of availability. The use of capital for income generation will be a process applying the capital to the most profitable project or venture. The cost of capital can be defined as the possible profit generated from an alternative application. This cost is defined as opportunity cost and it is mitigated by the risk involved in its application. Opportunity cost can also be related to the various investment choices which owners of capital have. Investors will base a decision on the risk return relationship of possible investments. Should an investment yield an acceptable return for the perceived risk, an investor will choose that particular investment. This will obviously depend on whether there are alternatives producing similar or better yields at similar or lower risk levels. Having an appropriate strategy will only yield acceptable returns through effective balance sheet management and decision–making. Balance sheet management entails the use of debt and equity finance in a way which results in the most profitable financing method or the lowest cost of capital. Equity finance entails the use of shareholders’ funds for financing capital requirements. This is usually done by issuing and selling shares over the counter or in the official market in order to finance operating requirements or to fund investments. For a company to list it means offering its shares to the public on an open trading system. In essence this means that investors have to be recruited. In South Africa, this trading system is the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) The purpose of this research is to identify the financial variables or value drivers through which management of farming product traders or food–producer companies can evaluate the expected performance of its shares, should it be listed on the JSE. The results were achieved by defining a comprehensive set of financial diagnostic, accounting and valuation ratios and testing it against the response of the share price. The test was done on the basis of developing multiple linear regression models for each relevant year and all companies listed in the particular sector on the JSE, in the defined period. Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT) per share emerged as the most reliable measure of share performance. Second on the list was residual income calculations and more specifically, derivatives of EVA® principles as developed by Stern and Steward. Research into factors influencing share prices resulted in non–financial factors also coming to light. These factors, however, impact on the long term financial performance. The end result was a proposal to break down NOPAT into its key elements and identify the operations where these elements can be managed. A system of incentive driven measures is to be developed to drive behaviour, possibly through a balanced score card in order to introduce share value–based management. This will ensure that there are no surprises by the time shares are introduced to the open market.

Résumé :
The focus of this study was to investigate the perception of employees on environmental performance within a corporate company. In this instance Absa Bank Limited was the organisation under investigation referring directly to the banks impact on the environment. A literature study was conducted to establish an awareness of all related terms and subjects to environmental performance. Further a specific focus on Absa Bank Limited?s environmental impact and the policies and procedures set out by this organisation was researched and discussed. An empirical study was conducted by means of a self completion questionnaire administered by a random sample of employees working for Absa Bank Limited. Quantitative research that was conducted by means of questionnaires were distributed through the Absa Bank Limited Group to 200 employees in the Gauteng and North West Province and distributed through different departments and management levels. 52 usable questionnaires were gathered out of the abovementioned areas. Cronbach Alpha coefficient values were used to determine the internal consistency amongst items in the research instrument. The research instrument used in this study to assess perception of employees on the environmental performance within Absa Bank Limited had acceptable reliability, since not one of the constructs had a lower Cronbach Alpha coefficient than 0.7. The correlation between the demographical variables and the seven constructs were examined by independent t–tests and effect sizes. The demographical factors used were the gender classification of respondents, number of years employed by Absa Bank Limited and the management level of the respondents. In all instances the effect sizes were too small to be of any practical significance since none of the effect sizes had a large effect (d–value = 0.8). Recommendations and practical ways in which environmental performance could be enhanced and maintained in Absa Bank Limited were discussed. It was also reccomended that systems and procedures should be revisited and adapted to ensure adherence to the requirements of environmental performance. The report concluded by addressing the achievement of all the objectives, and by recommending possible future research that could be undertaken based on this study.

Résumé :
Mini-study project (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The rise of the health and fitness club, Health and Racquet Club, in the late eighties was spectacular and it came as no surprise that the company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1994. The two founder members, Peter Gardener and Robert Mitchell listed a company within a short period of time and were not afraid to change their strategy and expand their operations into other sectors of the leisure industry in 1995. In the late nineties, after restructuring the subsidiaries of the group, management started to look at foreign markets for expansion of the core business, namely the Health and Racquet Clubs. The group's foreign expansion accumulated a vast amount of debt on its balance sheet and in retrospect was seen as one of the main reasons for its collapse. The company was placed under liquidation in the end of the 2000 financial year. This study will evaluate the different strategies management followed, and will identify some key strategic mistakes that was made and that led to the downfall of a seemingly financially strong organization that offered above average returns to it's stakeholders. It also aims to show that a business strategy has to rely on strong corporate governance and that the last say always lies with the stakeholders within that company.

This is a study of the decline and collapse, in 1973, of the Birmingham Small Arms Company Ltd, primarily a motorcycle manufacturing company and pre-WW2 world market-leader. The study also integrates and extends several earlier investigations into the collapse that concentrated on events in the Motorcycle Division, rather than on the BSA Group, its directors and its overall strategy. The collapse of BSA was due to failures of strategy, direction and management by directors, who were not up to running one of Britain’s major industrial companies after it was exposed to global competition. While the charge, by Boston Consulting and others, that the directors sacrificed growth for short term profits was not proven, their failure to recognise the importance of motorcycle market share and their policy of segment retreat in response to Japanese competition, played a large part in the decline of the company. Their ill-fated diversification policy harmed the motorcycle business, but capital could have been raised in the 1950s to re-equip its manufacturing facilities, had the directors had the confidence to do so. The study also examined whether the ‘cultural critique’ of Barnett C, Wiener M.J. et al provides a valid alternative explanation for the collapse. While the hypothesis has some plausibility, too many variables and unresolved supplementary questions arise for this to contribute effectively to a rigorous account of the causes of the demise of the firm.

Résumé :
It might be said that the relationship between a journal and its publisher is something like an arranged marriage: it is cultural rather than romantic, and it is more of a business deal carefully considered by those in charge of both sets of parties with quiet aspirations of a solid future than about the passion and emotion of the wedding. There is much that is controversial about the social construct of an arranged marriage, but the relationship between the South African Law Journal (SALJ) and Juta and Company Ltd (to be referred to hereafter by its more common sobriquet in the legal profession: 'Juta') does seem to give credence to one of the most popular psychologies about the institution: that very often the relationship, a little uncertain at the start, grows stronger and more secure over time. The year 2011 marked the centenary of the publication of the SALJ by Juta: an exceptional anniversary. This is not a time to review the history of the relationship between Juta, the SALJ, and its various editors. This task has been carried out several times by Ellison Kahn in his inimitable style (see 'Fifty years of the Journal under Union' (1960) 77 SALJ 162; 'The birth and life of the South African Law Journal' (1983) 100 SALJ 594; 'Foreword' to Patricia Cobbledick and Mervyn Dendy The South African Law Journal Cumulative Index 1973-1997 (1997); 'Farewell! Fifty years' hard work comes to an end' (1999) 116 SALJ 691; 'Speech at the Juta Dinner at the South African Law Journal Jubilee Conference' (2004) 121 SALJ 271). But a short commemorative tribute seems apt to commemorate the liaison between the two parties.

This company shall to focus on consulting in three fields : Public- and Media Relations, Language & Intercultural issues and giving presentations. These fields tend to be connected to each other. The second division shall be presentation training in this ecc wants to develop a partnership with another company, Affinity Asia Consulting Ltd. and their owner, Mr. Richard deVries. He is an experienced trainer for presentation seminars. Together both companies want to offer first of all tailor made seminars for presentation trainings which focuses on the expectations of the potential European target audience. The third field ecc wants to establish is Public and Media Relation consulting. The founders think that there are many small and medium sized companies in Taiwan, which already have business or customer in Germany but they are facing a lack of profile or awareness in their target region Europe. Since the other founder, Mr. Markus Wild is an experienced PR professional who worked 5 years as a spokesman for a 5bn-Euro energy company the founders believe that ecc can offer PR-advisory in the near future.

This dissertation is an assumption that display manufactures or touch panel manufacturers might want to invest TPK Holding Co., Ltd for cooperation. How can they evaluate TPK Holding Co., Ltd? Ever since Apple Inc. introduced the first generation iPhone in AD 2007, the entire mobile phone industry changed dramatically due to the application of touch panel in smartphones. Almost all 1st-tier mobile phone makers were shocked and realized that touch panel application would be a major factor of success in the market of mobile phone. Thus, they modified their new product development for both middle- end and high-end smartphones those must be applied with touch panel as a necessary specification. As a result of market demand, there were many touch panel companies established several years ago and created a competitive market in touch panel industry. The first generation iPhone was with the configuration of projective- capacitive touch panel. Due to the patent issues, touch panel manufacturers began to provide customers from resistive touch panel then switched to projective-capacitive touch panel that includes either PET or glass material. Business of touch panel has been going up and down caused by mobile phone makers’ choices. However, the competition was getting tough continuously with more players from AD2013 when display manufacturers introduced in-cell and on-cell in the market. Nowadays, it is being a stage of both touch panel manufacturers and display manufacturers grab market share of touch panel for mobile devices.

The thesis is based on the research into the theory of Discounted Cash Flow Model (DCF) and written in accordance with the financial accounting report of the United Epitaxy Company. In comparison with the 2 research methods being adopted to analyze the enterprise value of the UEC Co., the result indicates that the Sales Driven Flow method, when compared to the Earning Driven Flow would apparently be able to better meet the requirement of the enterprise value. In addition to the above-mentioned result, the research has also come up with the following concrete proposals with the view to improve the future management strategy and guideline of the enterprise: 1.To enhance the Operating profit rate: The sales expenses should be properly supervised to prevent un-necessary waste and focus on the quality of the after sales service which can reduce claims from customers. 2.To increase the growth rate of operating income: The higher the accountability of the product quality is, the higher repurchase rate would be. And so does the professional know-how of the researchers of the new product development would apply for the re-purchase rate. 3.To adopt strategies of low investment: Which would emphasize on how to increase the operating profit rate as well as the return on investment rate.

This thesis analyzes a business management model of Sin Xin Leather, a family enterprise from its humble beginnings till its success of an international leading brand today. Sin Xin Leather is a world-leading tannery that supplies fine and high-quality cowhide internationally. 1926, in order to escape the chaos caused by the Chinese civil war, Mr. Xu’s grandfather led all family members to leave from Chaoshan-Guangdong, China to Singapore. In an accidental situation, Grandfather Xu got acquainted with some Indonesian sailors who had brought some raw hides along with them. Upon learning about cowhide, he then seized the opportunity to start a business in trading of the skins. Singapore was under the British Colony at that point in time and some of the British soldiers had the knowledge to tan raw hides. Grandfather Xu tapped on their knowledge and expertise in tanning raw hides and went into tanning services as part of his business. As the management of a small family business grew to be complex with the involvement of many family members, they started to leave the company after the passing of Grandfather Xu. With that, Mr. Xu and his father decided to re-organize the family business and started Sin Xin Leather in 1978. The core business of Sin Xin Leather was to import various type of cowhide, process and tan them into leathers and sell them globally to upmarket and luxurious fashion houses. These leathers are then made into products such as handbags, shoes, watchstraps and garment, and sold in high fashion boutiques. The company gradually became well-established after many years of laborious management in day-to-day operations, funding, employing technologically-savvy personal, working with the cattle farmers, animal species/wildlife protection societies, etc. Quality of skins improved with the use of high-tech equipment and recruitment of talents. An increase in skins’ production led to increasing profits and the company was finally listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX) in 2008. Shortly after being listed, the company suffered in the 2008 financial crisis. The leather industry was temporarily affected but the business of Sin Xin Leather resumed gradually with a new management plan after a year of hard work. In 2011, after a year of negotiations, Sin Xin Leather and two luxury brands from France and Italy, the world's top luxury goods organizations, finally came to an agreement and these top luxury businesses became a partner of the company. With these luxury companies’ several high-end luxury brands, they eventually became the company's customers – buying cow leather for their luxurious products. With the partnership and strong support of these customers, Sin Xin Leather foresees its increase in profits and business scaling to greater heights.

Researchers are not satisfied with models that explain share price variations based on net present value analysis. To overcome the traditional problems of net present value analysis, intrinsic bubbles and the dividend price ratio were investigated to explain share price volatility. An index derived from dividend paying shares listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange Limited (JSE Ltd) for the period January 2000 to December 2010 was investigated. This investigation was based on Froot and Obstfeld’s (1991) Intrinsic Bubbles model. The null hypothesis of no intrinsic bubbles was not rejected. The findings infer that share prices were not only driven by fundamentals, implying the presence of intrinsic bubbles. This is consistent with the findings of Brooks, Nneji and Ward (2011) after applying the same methodology on the US housing market. The researcher’s aim was to provide a better clarification on whether changes in fundamentals are suitable to predict share prices, but results were inconclusive in this regard. The results indicate that fundamentals account for 80.1% of share price movements.

In 2008, the global financial crisis impacted the entire world. During this period all industries were faced with strong daunting challenges including the insurance industry in Taiwan. The world’s attention focused on the American International Group AIG who was forced to sell a major insurance section which was one of their golden egg companies – Nan Shan Ren Shou. It experienced financial difficulties, and periodically changing stocks. Finally in August 2011, Run Tai Group bought into Nan Shan Ren Shou and became the major stock holder and it also obtained financial control over the company. Because of the advancement of the internet, decreasing interest rates, and insurance regulating bodies implementing severe control over coverage policies caused Taiwan’s insurance industry to face a buyer saturation point that produced fewer profits. Insurance companies had to control their capital investments more efficiently as well as their management hierarchies. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate Nan Shan Ren Shou’s management style and to use related agencies data as provided by Taiwan’s Economy Research Institute, Taiwan’s Economic Newspapers, the Insurance Bureau, and the Conservatorship Insurance Developing Center, as well as related data from published research reports and past thesis as statistical references. In addition, it utilized related documentation and information that focused on Nan Shan Ren Shou’s internal and external environment to conduct advanced SWOT analysis studies to identify key points and factors for successful management strategies.By becoming a WTO member, the country’s insurance market became internationalized. Using internalization to helped increase Taiwan’s competitive ability and open up the international market. In addition, after joining MOU, Taiwan’s financial industry had the opportunity to open doors into the Chinese market. Soon after Taiwan signed the ECFA, local investors were able openly conduct business with China. Nan Shan insurance company can rely on its own marketing strategy to open up the China market which is inevitable: On the other hand, expanding its market into Southeast Asia is becoming a marketing necessity. The insurance industries owns tremendous amount of capital to invest in that market. Nan Shan has many choices to invest in various opportunities such as government bonds, stocks, government funds, real estate, and loans etc. but Nan Shan has to balance its investment portfolio between negotiable securities and real estate. By pursuing this strategy, it is believed that Nan Shan will open up a brighter future in insurance industry.

This paper tries to examine motives, business strategies, performances and outcomes of trading company pursuing international strategies using the example of small sized exporting company as a case study. It was found that Taiwan’s trading companies use their location advantage and try to increase market size through exports because local market is not sufficiently big enough. Different business-level-strategies are adopted by the trading company depending on goods’ place of manufacturing, technology, consumer buying power, etc and competitive advantage of the company. Taiwanese small sized trading companies use different methods to enter new markets such as trade exhibitions. They are very sensitive to the changes of environmental factors, such as financial crisis and natural disasters.
