Geophysical investigations were conducted at the proposed Maricopa SSC site in support of the geotechnical program for the State of Arizona site proposal. Modeling of a gravity survey across Rainbow Valley showed that the minimum depth to bedrock in the center of this basin is 750 meters (2500 feet). Gravity and magnetic surveys in Maricopa Valley between the north and south Maricopa Mountains indicated the possible presence of faults and diabase dikes. Seismic refraction surveys in the area of the proposed Injector Ring complex indicated a buried bedrock ridge about 400 meters (1300 feet) wide and approximately 25 meters (80 feet) below the surface. Geophysical surveys were also conducted at the Twin Buttes Mine near the proposed Sierrita SSC site. These surveys included gravity, seismic refraction, seismic reflection, DC resistivity and IP, and CSAMT surveys. Since the geology and geotechnical properties at the Twin Buttes mine are very well documented from extensive drilling, these surveys provide a calibration of observed geophysical signatures over various rock types.

This dissertation contributes to the scholarly debate on temporary teams by exploring team interactions and boundaries.The fundamental challenge in temporary teams originates from temporary participation in the teams. First, as participants join the team for a short period of time, there is not enough time to build trust, share understanding, and have effective interactions. Consequently, team outputs and practices built on team interactions become vulnerable. Secondly, as team participants move on and off the teams, teams’ boundaries become blurred over time. It leads to uncertainty among team participants and leaders about who is/is not identified as a team member causing collective disagreement within the team. Focusing on the above mentioned challenges, we conducted this research in healthcare organisations since the use of temporary teams in healthcare and hospital setting is prevalent. In particular, we focused on orthopaedic teams that provide personalised treatments for patients using 3D printing technology. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using interviews, observations, questionnaires and archival data at Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna, Italy. This study provides the following research outputs. The first is a conceptual study that explores temporary teams’ literature using bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review to highlight research gaps. The second paper qualitatively studies temporary relationships within the teams by collecting data using group interviews and observations. The results highlighted the role of short-term dyadic relationships as a ground to share and transfer knowledge at the team level. Moreover, hierarchical structure of the teams facilitates knowledge sharing by supporting dyadic relationships within and beyond the team meetings. The third paper investigates impact of blurred boundaries on temporary teams’ performance. Using quantitative data collected through questionnaires and archival data, we concluded that boundary blurring in terms of fluidity, overlap and dispersion differently impacts team performance at high and low levels of task complexity.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att se på och jämföra hur tre svenska tidningar behandlade Catalinaaffären under perioden den 13-20 juni 1952. För att kunna göra detta presenterars först en bakgrund och ett händelseförlopp till Catalinaaffären. Huvuddelen av uppsatsen beskriver sedan vad tidningarna Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet och Norrskensflamman skrev angående Catalinaaffären under den tidigare nämnda perioden. Efter detta jämförs och kontrasteras de olika tidningarna för att se hur de valde att behandla händelsen. Resultatet tyder bland annat på att Dagens Nyheter för det mesta framstod som mer saklig än de andra två, Aftonbladet använde sig i högre grad av sensationella rubriker och Norrskensflamman var den som till största delen skiljde sig i vad som rapporterades angående affären.

In order to fully understand the role methane (CH₄) plays in the microwave emission spectra of the deep atmospheres of the outer planets, over 280 laboratory measurements of the opacity of ammonia in a methane environment have been made in the 5-20 cm wavelength range. All opacity measurements were made with either 100 or 200 mbars of ammonia and with 1 to 3 bars of added methane in the 330-450K temperature range. A formalism for the absorptivity of ammonia broadened by methane has now been developed and had been applied to the Hanley et al. (Icarus, v. 202, 2009) model for the opacity of ammonia. Due to methane's relatively low abundance at Jupiter (~0.2% by volume), its effect on the microwave spectrum which will be observed by the Juno MWR (Microwave Radiometer) will be minimal. However, these experimental results will significantly improve the understanding of the microwave emission spectrum of Uranus and Neptune where methane plays a more dominant role.

The goal of this study was to understand black women’s perspectives on stay-at-home mothering and examine the ways in which Mocha Moms, Inc. provides support. Twelve African American mothers from three chapters of Mocha Moms, Inc. were interviewed and data were analyzed and coded for themes. Findings indicate that participants did not aspire to stay home with their children. Additionally, participants reject stereotypical ideas of at-home mothering. They also see themselves as the primary educators of their children. Finally, they do not feel respected in the black community or in society.

The work focuses on the literary work of Korean writer Yun Heunggil in the context of modern Korean literature of the 1970s. The first part describes the general features of the literature in the 1970s, with an emphasis on changes in requirements placed on authors and topics in this period of modernization. The second part deals exclusively with the work of Yun Heunggil. Great attention is given to writer's history, as it has a significant influence on his early literary work. In the latter parts, the work deals with two topics, which represent the seventies in the Korean modern literature - Korean War and modernization of Korean society. Then it looks into common features of work and reccuring motifs in both categories, using detailed analysis of narrative sequences. Work also includes a sample translation of one of the author's short stories, The Man Who Left Behind a Nine Pairs of Shoes

Hintergrund: In der präventiven und therapeutischen Behandlung von hypertrophen Narben und Keloiden hat sich die Behandlungsstrategie der Kompressionstherapie etabliert. Bisher konnte ein Druckoptimum der Kompressionsbekleidung von 25mmHg anhand der Kapillarkompressionstheorie ermittelt werden, welches an Kindern durchschnittlich erreicht wird. Langzeitstudien zeigten abweichendes Outcome der Therapie bei Kindern und Erwachsenen. In dieser Studie sollte nun herausgefunden werden, ob das unterschiedliche Ansprechen der Therapie in andersartigem Druckverhalten begründet ist. Material und Methoden: Eingebracht werden konnten Messungen an 100 Kompressionstherapien, zugeordnet zu den Gruppen „Kinder“ und „Erwachsene“ mittels Kikuhime®-Drucksensor. Analysiert und gegenübergestellt wurden die Werte anhand der Lokalisation der Messung, der Gewebeunterlage und der Tragedauer der Kompressionstherapien. Ergebnisse und Diskussion: (1) In der Gesamtschau aller Messergebnisse besteht im Vergleich beider Gruppen kein signifikanter Unterschied hinsichtlich des Kompressionsdruckes. (2) Nach spezieller Gegenüberstellung der Körperregionen Arm, Bein, Fuß und Stamm ergibt sich kein signifikanter Unterschied der Druckwerte. (3) Hinsichtlich des Untergrundgewebes kann für die Gegenüberstellung beider Gruppen kein signifikanter Unterschied ermittelt werden. (4) Ein signifikanter Unterschied wurde bei Betrachtung der Messergebnisse bezüglich der Tragedauer sowohl in der Gruppe der Erwachsenen als auch in der Gruppe der Kinder bestätigt. So wurden deutlich niedrigere Werte an alten Kompressionsanzügen ermittelt. Zusammenfassung: Sowohl in der Gruppe der Kinder als auch in der Gruppe der Erwachsenen kann das Druckoptimum von 25mmHg durchschnittlich eingehalten werden. Demnach muss die Kompressionstherapie bezüglich des Alters nicht speziell angepasst werden. Ein signifikanter Unterschied kann zwischen neuen und alten Kompressionstherapien bestätigt werden
Background: In the prevention and therapy of hypertrophic scars and keloids the compression therapy was established. The optimum of pressure for the compression clothing could have been determined at 25mmHg on the basis of the capillary compression theory. Long-term studies showed a deviating outcome in the treatment of children and adults. The aim of the following study was to clarify whether the different responses to the therapy can be the result of differences in pressure behaviour. Material and Methods: Measurements were made on 100 compression garments with the Kikuhime® Subbandage & Body Pressure Measurin Device. The results were categorized into the two groups “children” and “adults”. The collected data were analysed and compared on the basis of localisation of the measurement, underlying tissue and wearing period of the compression clothes. Results and discussion: (1) Generally, there is no significant difference between the two groups in the comparison of all results of measurement. (2) After comparing the pressure measurements of the particular body regions arm, leg, foot and trunk, no significant differences were found. (3) Regarding the underlying tissue/texture no significant difference between the two groups was determined. (4) Concerning the period of wearing differences could be confirmed. The results of old compression therapies were significantly lower than those of new ones. Summary: Both in the group of adults and children the optimum of pressure of 25mmHg can be reached. Therefore the compression therapy does not need to be adapted concerning the age of the patient. A significant difference of pressure between new and old compression therapies could be confirmed

In this study we have investigated the possible role of c-Jun and it’s activation by the JNK pathway in neuronal cell death and in the inflammatory response of activated astrocytes. The first part of this thesis focuses on the role of site specific phosphorylation of c-Jun in neuronal cell death. The second part focuses on the function of c-Jun in LPS-mediated activation of Bergmann glia cells. In the nervous system, activation of c-Jun transcription factor by different isoforms of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) functions in various cellular programs, including neurite outgrowth, repair and apoptosis. Yet, the regulatory mechanism underlying the functional dichotomy of c-Jun remains to be elucidated. Serine (S) 63/73 and threonine (T) 91/93 of c-Jun are the target phosphorylation sites for JNKs in response to various stimuli. Yet, these two groups of phosphorylation sites are differentially regulated in vivo, as the S63/73 sites are promptly phosphorylated upon JNK activation, whereas T91/93 phosphorylation requires a priming event at the adjacent T95 site. In our study, we used cerebellar granule cell (CGC) apoptosis by trophic/potassium (TK) deprivation as a model system to investigate the regulation and function of site-specific c-Jun phosphorylation at the S63 and T91/T93 JNK-sites in neuronal cell death. In this model system, JNK induces pro-apoptotic genes through the c-Jun/Ap-1 transcription factor. On the other side, a survival pathway initiated by lithium leads to repression of pro-apoptotic c-Jun/Ap-1 target genes without interfering with JNK activity. Yet, the mechanism by which lithium inhibits c-Jun activity remains to be elucidated. We found that TK-deprivation led to c-Jun phosphorylation at all three JNK sites. However, immunofluorescence analysis of c-Jun phosphorylation at single cell level revealed that the S63 site was phosphorylated in all c-Jun-expressing cells, whereas the response of T91/T93 phosphorylation was more sensitive, mirroring the switch-like apoptotic response of cerebellar granular cells (CGCs). Furthermore, we observed that lithium impaired c-Jun phosphorylation at T91/93, without interfering with S63/73 phosphorylation or JNK activation, suggesting that T91/T93 phosphorylation triggers c-Jun pro-apoptotic activity. Notably, expression of a c-Jun mutant lacking the T95-priming site for T91/93 phosphorylation (c-Jun A95) mimicked the effect of lithium on both cell death and c-Jun site-specific phosphorylation, whereas it was fully able to induce neurite outgrowth in naïve PC12 cells. Vice-versa, a c-Jun mutant bearing aspartate-substitution of T95 overwhelmed lithium-mediate protection of CGCs from TK-deprivation, validating that inhibition of T91/T93/T95 phosphorylation underlies the effect of lithium on cell death. Mass-spectrometry analysis confirmed that c-Jun is phosphorylation at T91/T93/T95 in cells. Moreover, recombinant-JNK phosphorylated c-Jun at T91/T93 in a T95-dependent manner. Based on our results, we propose that T91/T93/T95 phosphorylation of c-Jun functions as a sensitivity amplifier of the JNK cascade, setting the threshold for c-Jun pro-apoptotic activity in neuronal cells. In the central nervous system (CNS), the c-Jun transcription factor has been mainly studied in neuronal cells and coupled to apoptotic and regenerative pathways following brain injury. Besides, several studies have shown a transcriptional role of c-Jun in activated cortical and spinal astrocytes. In contrast, little is known about c-Jun expression and activation in Bergmann glial (BG) cells, the radial cerebellar astrocytes playing crucial roles in cerebellar development and physiology. In this study, we used neuronal/glial cerebellar cultures from neonatal mice to assess putative functions of c-Jun in BG cells. By performing double immunocytochemical staining of c-Jun and two BG specific markers, S100 and GLAST, we observed that c-Jun was highly expressed in radial glial cells derived from Bergmann glia. Bergmann glia-derived cells expressed toll-like receptor (TLR 4) and treatment with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (Le et al.) induced c-Jun phosphorylation at S63, exclusively in BG cells. Moreover, LPS induced IL-1β expression and inhibition of JNK activity abolished both c-Jun phosphorylation and the increase of IL-1β mRNA. Notably, we also observed that LPS failed to induce IL-1β mRNA in neuronal/glial cerebellar cultures generated from conditional knockout mice lacking c-Jun expression in the CNS. These results indicate that c-Jun plays a central role in c-Jun in astroglial-specific induction of IL-1β. Furthermore, we confirmed in vivo that c-Jun is expressed in BG cells, during the formation of the BG monolayer. Altogether, our finding underlines a putative role of c-Jun in astroglia-mediated neuroinflammatory dysfunctions of the cerebellum
In dieser Studie wurde die Rolle des Transkriptionsfaktors c-Jun sowie seine Aktivierung durch den JNK Signalweg beim neuronalen Zelltod und bei der entzündlichen Reaktion von aktivierten Astrozyten untersucht. Der erste Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle von mehrfacher c-Jun Phosphorylierung an den Aminosäuren Threonin 91/93/95 beim neuronalen Zelltod. Der zweite Teil konzentriert sich auf die Rolle von c-Jun und seine Transaktivierung in LPS-vermittelter Aktivierung von Bergmann Gliazellen. Als Modellsystem für den neuronalen Zelltod wurde die Apoptose von cerebellären Granularzellen (CGC) durch trophische Granulazellen Kaliumkonzentration-Erniedrigung (TK) verwendet, da es ein Modell der Um das ist, das Zusammenspiel von pro-apoptotischen und pro-Überleben Signalwegen beim neuronalen Zelltod zu studieren. In diesem Modell induziert die c-Jun N-terminale Kinase (JNK) pro-apoptotische Gene durch den c-Jun/Ap-1 Transkriptionsfaktor. Auf der anderen Seite, führt ein Lithium-induzierter Überleben-Signalweg zur Unterdrückung der pro-apoptotischen c-Jun/Ap-1 Zielgene, ohne Interferenz mit JNK Aktivität. Es blieb jedoch der Mechanismus zu klären, durch den Lithium c-Jun-Aktivität hemmt. In der Arbeit wurde dieses Modellsystem benutzt, um die Regulation und Funktion der c-Jun-Phosphorylierung durch JNK an den Stellen S63 und T91/T93 beim neuronalen Zelltod zu studieren. Es wurde gefunden, dass TK-Kaliumerniedrigung zu c-Jun phosphorylierung führte und zwar an allen drei durch JNK phosphorylierbaren Ser/Thr (JNK-Stellen). Immunfluoreszenzanalyse von c-Jun Phosphorylierung auf Einzel-Zell-Ebene ergab jedoch, dass die S63-Stelle in allen c-Jun-exprimierenden Zellen phosphoryliert wurde, während T91/T93 Phosphorylierung empfindlicher war, analog zur Schalter-ähnlichen apoptotischen Antwort von CGCs. Umgekehrt verhinderte Lithium T91 und T93 Phosphorylierung und Zelltod ohne Wirkung auf die S63-Seite, was darauf hindeutet, dass T91/T93 Phosphorylierung durch c-Jun eine pro-apoptotische Aktivität auslöst. Dementsprechend schützte eine c-Jun-Mutation, der die T95 Priming-Stelle für T91/93 Phosphorylierung fehlt (T95A), CGCs vor Apoptose, wohingegen T95A Neuriten-wachstum in PC12-Zellen induzieren konnte. Umgekehrt führte eine c-Jun Mutante mit Aspartat-Substitution von T95 (T95D ) zur Aufhebung der schützenden Wirkung von Lithium auf CGC Apoptose, wodurch bestätigt wurde, dass die Inhibierung der T91/T93/T95 Phosphorylierung der Wirkung von Lithium auf den Zelltod zugrundeliegt. Massenspektrometrie-Analyse bestätigte multiple Phosphorylierung von c-Jun an T91/T93/T95 in den Zellen. Außerdem wurde rekombinantes c-Jun durch JNK an T91/T93 in einer T95-abhängigen Weise phosphoryliert. Basierend auf diesen Ergebnissen wird vorgeschlagen, dass T91/T93/T95 phosphorylierung von c-Jun als Empfindlichkeit-Verstärker der JNK-Kaskade fungiert, der die Schwelle für die pro-apoptotische Aktivität von c-Jun in neuronalen Zellen einstellt. Im zentralen Nervensystem (ZNS) wurde die Rolle des c-Jun Transkriptionsfaktors hauptsächlich bei neuronalem Zelltod und bei neuronaler Regeneration nach Hirnschädigung untersucht. Außerdem wurde auch eine Rolle für c-Jun bei der Transkription in aktivierten kortikalen und spinalen Astrozyten beschrieben. Im Gegensatz dazu ist wenig bekannt über die Expression von c-Jun und dessen Transaktivierung in Bergmann Gliazellen (BG)-Zellen, die eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Entwicklung des Kleinhirns und dessen Physiologie spielen. In dieser Arbeit wurde die putative Rolle von c-Jun bei kultivierten neuronalen/BG-Zellen aus dem Maus-Kleinhirn untersucht. Immunfluoreszenzanalyse von c-Jun und zwei für BG-Zellen spezifische Marker, S100 und GLAST, ergab, dass c-Jun in BG-Zellen hoch exprimiert wurde. Außerdem wurde gefunden, dass der Toll-like Rezeptor TLR4 in BG-Zellen exprimiert ist und dass die Behandlung mit bakteriellem Lipopolysaccharid (Le et al.) die c-Jun- Phosphorylierung an S63 induziert. Zusätzlich wurde gefunden, dass LPS IL-1b Expression induziert und die Inhibierung von JNK Aktivität verhinderte sowohl c-Jun-Phosphorylierung, als auch die Zunahme von IL-1 b mRNA. Insbesondere konnte LPS die IL-1b mRNA-Produktion in neuronalen / BG-Kulturen aus konditionellen Knockout Mäusen, denen c-Jun im ZNS fehlte, nicht induzieren, womit gezeigt wurde, dass c-Jun bei der Astroglia-spezifischen Induktion von IL-1 b essentiell ist. Immunohistochemische Analyse von c-Jun-exprimierenden Zellen im postnatalen Kleinhirn bestätigte in-vivo die Expression von c-Jun in BG Zellen und förderte eine dynamische Expression von c-Jun während der Entwicklung der BG Monolayer zutage. Insgesamt unterstreichen die Befunde dieser Arbeit eine wahrscheinliche Rolle von c-Jun bei Astroglia-vermittelten neuroinflammatorischen Funktionsstörungen des Kleinhirns

Immer mehr junge Menschen mit Behinderung, insbesondere mit Mehrfachbehinderung, verlassen die Schule ohne eine realistische Perspektive auf eine erfüllende Berufstätigkeit. Zu weit scheinen die intrapersonalen Voraussetzungen der Schüler von den steigenden Qualifikations-, Leistungs- und Flexibilitätsanforderungen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt abzuweichen. Durch die Befragung von Personalverantwortlichen ("Selektionsverantwortlichen") in Betrieben werden konkrete Einstellungen, Anforderungen und Erwartungen potentieller Arbeitgeber festgestellt. In einem weiteren Schritt werden auf Grundlage dieser Daten Zielperspektiven für den berufsvorbereitenden Unterricht an Förderzentren gewonnen, um die Jugendlichen näher an den Arbeitsmarkt heranbringen zu können.

The results provide a tool enabling further understanding of the molecular organization of normal oral mucosal basal lamina and bassal lamina in squamous cell carcinomas.

Ziel dieser Arbeit war es zum einen, den Signal-Rausch-Abstand bei 50%igem Satzverständnis unter Verwendung des HSM-Satztests mit CCITT-Störlärm bei 25 jungen, normalhörenden Probanden zu ermitteln. Zum anderen galt es festzustellen, wie die Probanden ihr Satzverständnis selbst beurteilten, und diese Einschätzungen mit den ermittelten Ergebnissen zu vergleichen, wodurch sowohl ein objektiver als auch ein subjektiver Parameter erfasst wurde. Hierbei wurde ein sprachaudiometrisches Verfahren verwendet, das sich eines bereits in der Tonaudiometrie von Békésy entwickelten Testverfahrens bedient. In dem Verfahren nach Békésy verändert der Patient selbstständig durch Betätigen und Loslassen eines Knopfes die Lautstärke des dargebotenen Tones und bestimmt hierdurch seine Hörschwelle. In dem hier verwendeten Versuchsaufbau wirkt der Proband insofern mit, als durch die eigene Einschätzung seiner Hörleistung die Lautstärke des dargebotenen Testmaterials zur Ermittlung der 50%igen Satzverständnisschwelle fortlaufend modifiziert wird. Die wichtigsten Aussagen dieser Arbeit waren einerseits, dass die Signal-Rausch-Abstände der jungen, normalhörenden Probanden bei einem 50%igen Satzverständnis normalverteilt waren. Andererseits stellte sich heraus, dass die Probanden mit ihrer Selbsteinschätzung im Durchschnitt mit 48,0 %, bei einem tatsächlichen 50%igen Satzverständnis sehr nahe an das objektiv ermittelte Ergebnis herankamen. Prinzipiell wäre auf der Basis dieses Versuchsaufbaus ein ähnlich automati-siertes Verfahren wie bei der Békésy-Audiomterie denkbar, da gemäß den Ergebnissen des hier untersuchten Kollektivs objektives Hörverständnis und subjektive Einschätzung eng beieinander liegen. Dieses würde eine erhebli-che Zeitersparnis und methodische Vereinfachung für den Untersucher be-deuten. Insbesondere gilt dies für Screening-Untersuchungen. Dieses Verfahren könnte auch für die Hörgeräteanpassung und -kontrolle eine Bereicherung darstellen, da hierbei das subjektive Hörempfinden stärkere Beachtung findet, welches sehr wichtig für den alltäglichen Tragekomfort und damit der Compliance des Patienten ist. Diese Dissertation könnte als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Arbeiten genutzt werden, welche prüfen könnten, inwieweit sich die Ergebnisse dieser Dissertation bei Schwerhörigen und Hörgeräteträgern reproduzieren lassen
25 people at the age of 20 to 30 years were tested in free field by means of the HSM-speech-test with CCITT-noise. Their continuous self-estimate of their performance of speech perception within 4 asymetric categories modified the speech to noise ratio of the test, thus resulting in the 50% speech reception threshold. By introducing an independent observer this relationship was examined. Furthermore the results were compared to the results of an analogue work of Romanos testing 25-year-olds. The used method proved capable of determining the speech reception threshold and made the expected differences in the performance of the older test subjects compared to the younger ones become visible. Further studies are necessary to establish an adequate test for use in the adjustment of hearing aids

As opposed to conventional air vehicles that have fixed wings, small birds and insects are known to flap their wings at higher angles of attack. The vortex produced at the tip of the wing, known as the leading-edge vortex (LEV), plays an important role to enhance lift during its flight. In this thesis, we analyze the influence of these vortices on aerodynamic forces that could be beneficial to micro-air vehicle performance and efficiency. The flow structures associated with simple harmonic motions of an airfoil are first investigated. The characteristics of the time-averaged and fluctuating forces are explained by analyzing vortical flow features, such as vortex lock-in, leading-edge vortex synchronization, and vortex formation time. Specific frequency regions where the wake instability locks in to the unsteady motion of the airfoil are identified, and these lead to significant changes in the mean forces. A detailed study of the flow structures associated with the LEV acting either in- or out-of-phase with the quasi-steady component of the forces is performed to quantify the amplification and attenuation behavior of the fluctuating forces. An inherent time scale of the LEV associated with its formation and detachment (LEV formation time) is shown to control the time-averaged forces. With these results, several optimal flow control problems are formulated. Adjoint-based optimal control is applied to an airfoil moving at a constant velocity and also to a reciprocating airfoil with no forward velocity. In both cases, we maximize lift by controlling the pitch rate of the airfoil. For the former case, the static map of lift at various angles of attack is additionally examined to find the static angle that provides maximum lift and also to confirm whether the optimizations perform according to the static map. For the latter case, we obtain a solution of the optimized motion of the flapping airfoil which resembles that of a hovering insect.
