Texte intégralJulienne Gauvain, alias Juliette Drouet, is mainly well-known for her fifty-year relationship with Victor Hugo. But first and foremost, she was a lavish letter writer who wrote more than 22,000 letters to her dear poet – calling them her ‘restitus’- from 1833 until she died in 1883. They were safely kept by her lover, who entrusted them to Louis Koch – Juliette Drouet’s nephew – after she died. Today, they are gradually published online so as to provide the general public, as well as researchers, with this complete astounding correspondence. The critical and scientific edition – including transcriptions, scholar and manuscript-related annotations, explanatory notes, index, glossary – of 568 letters dating from 1841 (8th anniversary of the couple’s love story) highlights their biographical, documentary and literary interests. Indeed these ‘restitus’ allow a day-to-day study of the life of Juliette Drouet, who had just withdrawn from theatrical and public life in order to fully devote herself to her love, and of Victor Hugo who, freshly elected to the Académie française on January 7th and in the process of writing Le Rhin, had to face literary and family trials, started taking his first notes on the present times and was supervising the revivals of Hernani, Ruy Blas and Angelo, tyran de Padoue. These letters also account for an accurate testimony on the status of women, the sentimental ties, the customs and all sorts of small details of the 19th century daily life. As well, they supply precious information concerning the historical, political, medical, scientific, social and artistic context of the July Monarchy and the reign of Louis-Philippe. Finally, apart from its own stylistic and literary value, this true mass of text arouses a generic reflection given its hybrid status of epistolary diary
Heute, Véronique. « Édition critique des lettres de Juliette Drouet à Victor Hugo de 1874-1875 ». Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040074.
Texte intégralFor fifty years, from 1833 to 1883, Juliette Drouet wrote about twenty-two thousand letters to Victor Hugo. The corpus studied, 653 letters more one envelope, offers the continuous reading of the letters, transcribed and annotated. It is part of a project of the complete edition of this correspondence, which Florence Naugrette, Professor at the University Paris-Sorbonne, is the Director. These letters have a triple interest : biographical, historical and literary. Juliette Drouet describes new family life of Victor Hugo who decided to meet her grandchildren, daughter-in-law and Juliette Drouet, different floors in the same building of the 21 street of Clichy. This move is announced early in the year 1874 and occupies number of letters, just as the development of the second floor where lives of Juliette Drouet and where Victor Hugo works and receives his guests at his dinner and his evenings. Moreover, these letters are a testimony of the daily life of a housewife at the end of the 19th century, and her servants. They also evoke the proximity with animals, the use of drugs and give valuable information on the relationships between patients, health and medicine. Their literary interest is revealed in the reviews of Quatrevingt-Treize and the readings of Le Rappel, in addition to the hybrid kind of epistolary diary that these letters have. Victor Hugo legitimate this relationship with the five letters that he write her every year and shows that Juliette Drouet is the cornerstone of his existence

Texte intégral: From February 16th, 1833, presumed date of the first letter, to January 1st, 1883, last letter in our possesion, Juliette Drouet wrote over twenty two thousand letters to Victor Hugo. She wrote everyday, sometimes several time in a day for fifty years. The corpus which we studied is composed of eight years of correspondence. We edited and studied three periods : from 1833 to 1835, 1845 ans from 1866 to 1869. This thesis shows the evolution of the pragmatic ans pratical scriptural of the writer. This study gives away the wealth of the Juliette Drouet’s letters to Victor Hugo. These letters have a triple interest : historical, biographical and literary. It is a everyday life’s testimony of the 19th century, a women life’s testimony ans especialy a kept woman life’s testimony. These true documents socio-historical give us informations about the ways of hygiene ans health of this time. These letters are a biographical’s testimony of Juliette Drouet and Victor Hugo’s life, of the lover’s life and also a testimony of the literary, political and family’s life of Victor Hugo. The literary’s interest is double : the letters show the work’s methods of Hugo and they rouse a generic literary question. These letters are a correpondence but also a diary. At the beginning, it was a correspondence which metamorphosed in a introspective writing. Finaly, it’s an hybrid gender, between a letter-diary and a diary epistolary

Texte intégralJuliette Drouet was not only Victor Hugo’s mistress for fifty years. She was also an indefatigable and generous letter writer who leaves for posterity about twenty two thousand letters written daily to Victor Hugo. This important amount of letters are today in the heart of a vast project, which aims to edit them entirely. Placing itself in this project, the present thesis proposes the continuous reading of the letters by Juliette Drouet to Victor Hugo under the Second Republic – from January 1st, 1848 until November 30th, 1851 –, transcribed and annotated. Written during a key period of the History of France and Victor Hugo's life, these letters present at the same time an historical and biographical interest. Drafted daily, they are also for the third reader a new record on the supported woman’s conditions, on the theatrical life in Paris, and on the hygiene and the medicine under the Second Republic. Letters offer a particular literary interest by their important generic porosity between letter, diary and conversation. These letters come along with a critical analysis, which allows highlighting the triple biographical, historical and literary interest of this corpus. Completed by all the tools which requires the understanding of these letters, this thesis provides the biographic summary of the persons quoted by Juliette Drouet as well as a glossary of the words and the expressions used by this last one
