We present a decision-theoretic analysis of an agent's understanding of the interdependencies in her choices. We provide the foundations for a simple and flexible model that allows the misperception of correlated risks. We introduce a framework in which the decision maker chooses a portfolio of assets among which she may misperceive the joint returns, and present simple axioms equivalent to a representation in which she attaches a probability to each possible joint distribution over returns and then maximizes subjective expected utility using her ( possibly misspecified) beliefs. Résumé :
The residential location decision process has been studied for several decades with use of different approaches. One such approach that has received considerable attention in urban planning is the decompositional approach. This approach involves measuring individual preferences. Residential choice behaviour is, however, often the result of a joint decisionmaking process, especially in the case of dual earner households. In the present paper, the original modelling approach is therefore extended to a model of joint decisionmaking. The results of an empirical application in the context of residential choice behaviour in the Netherlands are described.

Résumé :
PurposeStrategic alliances have a variety of governance structures that can be broadly classified as joint ventures, minority equity alliances, and contractual alliances. This paper seeks to empirically examine the roles of four key determinants of governance structure choice, namely, joint R&D and joint marketing objectives, alliance management experience, and international partners.Design/methodology/approachSeveral hypotheses are developed regarding governance structure choice and are tested with data from 765 alliances. A multinomial logistic regression (logit) model is used for statistical analysis, with five control variables.FindingsAll hypotheses are supported, so that the roles of alliance objectives, alliance management experience, and international partners are demonstrated as being significant as determinants of governance structure choice in alliances.Research limitations/implicationsLimitations stem from the data being from a single source, one that also relies on press announcements that may be biased toward larger alliances.Practical implicationsBriefly, alliance managers should find it useful to assess the relative presence of the four determinants of structural choice studied in this investigation in order to make an informed selection of the appropriate governance structure.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the knowledge of the key determinants of governance structure choice in strategic alliances by examining empirically, with a large sample of alliances from various industries, the significant roles of four factors, namely, joint R&D and joint marketing objectives, alliance management experience, and international partners.

Résumé :
Place or residence (POR) and place of work (POW) are two spatial pivots defining patterns of travel behavior. These choices are considered part of long-term choice influencing short-term daily travel choices. Hence, POR-POW distributions are input into almost all daily travel demand models. However, in many cases, POW-POR is modelled in an ad-hoc way considering the gravity-based or entropy is maximizing aggregate modelling approach. Lack of data on the sequence of choices related to POR and POW is often blamed for avoiding using disaggregate choice model. Recognizing such data limitation, this paper presents an alternative methodology of modelling joint distribution of POW-POW that uses disaggregate choice models without necessarily knowing the sequence of POR and POW choices. It uses the conditional probability break downs of joint POR-POW choice probabilities as depicted in the Gibbs sampling approach. This allows capturing effects of household socioeconomic characteristics, zonal land-use characteristics, and modal accessibility factors in the POR-POW models. The model is applied for a case study in the city of Ottawa. Results reveal that the proposed methodology can replicate observed patterns of POR-POW with a high degree of accuracy.

Résumé :
We examine the possibility of shifting the concept of choice to the centre of the semiotic theory of learning. Thus, we define sign process (meaning-making) through the concept of choice: semiosis is the process of making choices between simultaneously provided options. We define semiotic learning as leaving traces by choices, while these traces influence further choices. We term such traces of choices memory. Further modification of these traces (constraints) will be called habituation. Organic needs are homeostatic mechanisms coupled with choice-making. Needs and habits result in motivatedness. Semiosis as choice-making can be seen as a complementary description of the Peircean triadic model of semiosis; however, this can fit also the models of meaning-making worked out in other shools of semiotics. We also provide a sketch for a joint typology of semiosis and learning.

Résumé :
When presented with multiple choices, we all have a preference; we may suffer loss because of conflicts arising from identical selections made by other people if we insist on satisfying only our preferences. Such a scenario is applicable when a choice cannot be divided into multiple pieces owing to the intrinsic nature of the resource. Earlier studies examined how to conduct fair joint decision-making while avoiding decision conflicts in terms of game theory when multiple players have their own deterministic preference profiles. However, probabilistic preferences appear naturally in relation to the stochastic decision-making of humans, and therefore, we theoretically derive conflict-free joint decision-making that satisfies the probabilistic preferences of all individual players. To this end, we mathematically prove conditions wherein the deviation of the resultant chance of obtaining each choice from the individual preference profile (loss) becomes zero; i.e., the satisfaction of all players is appreciated while avoiding conflicts. Further, even in scenarios where zero-loss conflict-free joint decision-making is unachievable, we present approaches to derive joint decision-making that can accomplish the theoretical minimum loss while ensuring conflict-free choices. Numerical demonstrations are presented with several benchmarks.

Résumé :
The authors present a new multidimensional unfolding methodology that can analyze various types of individual choice data. The model represents choice data, defined by dichotomous variables that indicate whether a particular brand was chosen or not, in terms of a joint space of consumers and brands. Explicit treatment of marketing and subject background variables is allowed through optional model reparameterizations of consumers and brands. Together with the joint space representation of both consumers and brands, these optional reparameterizations can provide information on appropriate market segmentation bases and respective product positioning strategies. The authors apply this spatial choice model to data on consumer (intended) choices for 12 residential communications devices and demonstrate how the results can be used for optimal positioning decisions.

Self-Piercing Riveting (SPR) is receiving more recognition as a possible and effective solution to join body panels and structures. For example self-piercing riveting is still the first choice for the most well-known automotive car industries when considering the intensive use of aluminum alloy. To combine the advantages of the two joints techniques, in the last years hybrid joints combining a classical mechanical fastening (riveting) and a classical adhesive bonding, or a co-cured joint, have attracted great interest. In the present paper the static behavior of single-lap hybrid joints (SPR-bonded) between GFRP and aluminum through experimental tests. In particular, tensile strength, energy absorption and failure modes of studied joints were investigated through tensile tests.

Finger joints are of the most common site of osteoarthritis and include the DIP, PIP and the thumb saddle joint. Joint arthroplasty provides the best functional outcome for painful destroyed PIP joints, including the index finger. Adequate bone stock and functional tendons are required for a successful PIP joint replacement Fixed swan-neck and boutonnière deformity are better served with PIP arthrodesis rather than arthroplasty. Silicone implants are the gold standard in terms of implant choice. Newer two-component joints may have potential to correct lateral deformities and improve lateral stability. Different surgical approaches are used for PIP joint implant arthroplasty according to the needs and the experience of the surgeon. Post-operative rehabilitation is as critical as the surgical procedure. Early protected motion is a treatment goal. Revision and exchange PIP arthroplasty may successfully be used to treat chronic pain, but will not correct deformity. Cite this article: EFORT Open Rev 2019;4 DOI: 10.1302/2058-5241.4.180042

Résumé :
Residence location and workplace are the two most important urban land-use types, and there exist strong interdependences between them. Existing researches often assume that one choice dimension is correlated to the other. Using the mixed logit framework, three groups of choice models are developed to illustrate such choice dependencies. First, for all households, this paper presents a basic methodology of the residence location and workplace choice without decision sequence based on the assumption that the two choice behaviors are independent of each other. Second, the paper clusters all households into two groups, choosing residence or workplace first, and formulates the residence location and workplace choice models under the constraint of decision sequence. Third, this paper combines the residence location and workplace together as the choice alternative and puts forward the joint choice model. A questionnaire survey is implemented in Beijing city to collect the data of 1994 households. Estimation results indicate that the joint choice model fits the data significantly better, and the elasticity effects analyses show that the joint choice model reflects the influences of relevant factors to the choice probability well and leads to the job-housing balance.

Résumé :
With the rapid development of urbanization and motorization, urban commute trips are becoming increasingly serious due to the unbalanced distribution of residence and workplace land-use types in most Chinese cities. To explore the inherent interrelations among residence location, workplace, and commute trip, an integrated model framework of joint residence-workplace location choice and commute behavior is put forward based on the personal trip survey data of Beijing in 2005. First, to extract households’ different choice characteristics, this paper presents a latent class model, clusters all households into several groups, and analyzes the conditional probability of each group. Second, the paper integrates the residence location and workplace together as the joint choice alternative, employs the socioeconomic factors, individual attributes, household attributes, and trip characteristics as explanatory variables, and formulates the joint residence-workplace location choice model using mixed logit method. Estimations of the latent class model show that four latent groups fit the data best. Further results of the joint residence-workplace location choice model indicate that there exist significantly different choice characteristics in each latent group. Generally, the integrated model framework outperforms traditional location choice methods.

Résumé :
The bonding between two different materials or between same materials is a quite popular method. Unlike fastener joints, it avoids undesirable stress concentrations and doesn't demand an intrusive application to ensure the good performance of the joint. However, depending on the configuration of the adhesively bonded joint, its performance responds differently and the choice (if possible to make) on the best configuration, i.e. the configuration that originates the highest strength and/or stiffness, may be hard to make. Within this context, several configurations of aluminium-to-aluminium bonded joints unstrengthened and strengthened with fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) were modelled using a commercial finite element code. The linearity and nonlinearity of the FRP composite and the aluminium were considered, respectively, and the adhesively bonded joints were subjected to a regular displacement that intended to simulate a tensioning load. Also, the nonlinearities of the interfaces were considered in the form of nonlinear cohesive adhesive laws. The fracture Modes I and II were defined trough a bond-slip relation with a bi-linear shape and the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is used for the coupling of the cohesive adhesive laws of the interface when the debonding process of the bonded joint configuration implies the interaction between both fracture modes, i.e. the joint is under a mixed-mode (Mode I+II) situation. The results are presented and discussed and the configurations of the bonded joints are all compared through bond stress distributions and load-slip responses. The study herein presented is, therefore, a contribution to the analysis of the structural integrity of bonded joints between FRP composites and aluminium substrates, helping also on the choice of the most adequate bonded joint configuration and corresponding reinforcement to be used and applied in practice.

Tibiotarsal joint hyperextension is a hereditary pathology of rare incidence in companion animals, which affects the pelvic limbs. It is characterized by hyperextension of tibiotarsal joint, as well as by difficulty in flexing the affected limb. In some cases it can also affect the knee joint. Treatment choice and prognosis are critically dependent on early diagnosis, which increases favorable results. A Yorkshire Terrier pup and a Schnauzer pup with locomotion deficiency in the pelvic limbs were diagnosed with tibiotarsal joing hyperextension. Conservative treatment with passive and active physiotherapy and bandages was started, and provided good functional recovery without the need of surgical intervention.

Résumé :
Two-dimensional analyses of sprint kinetics are commonly undertaken but often ignore the metatarsal-phalangeal (MTP) joint and model the foot as a single segment. The aim of this study was to quantify the role of the MTP joint in the early acceleration phase of a sprint and to investigate the effect of ignoring the MTP joint on the calculated joint kinetics at the other stance leg joints. High-speed video and force platform data were collected from four to five trials for each of three international athletes. Resultant joint moments, powers, and net work at the stance leg joints during the first stance phase after block clearance were calculated using three different foot models. Considerable MTP joint range of motion (>30°) and a peak net MTP plantar flexor moment of magnitude similar to the knee joint were observed, thus highlighting the need to include this joint for a more complete picture of the lower limb energetics during early acceleration. Inclusion of the MTP joint had minimal effect on the calculated joint moments, but some of the calculated joint power and work values were significantly (P < .05) and meaningfully affected, particularly at the ankle. The choice of foot model is therefore an important consideration when investigating specific aspects of sprinting technique.

AbstractWe compare the influence of entry mode choice on subsidiary performance in two developmentally-differentiated regions of a developing host country. Analysis of 113 subsidiaries located in two provinces of China indicates that wholly owned subsidiaries outperform joint ventures in the developed region, whereas joint ventures outperform wholly owned subsidiaries in the less developed region. However, the smaller performance gap between wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures in the developed region indicates that the magnitude of influence of entry mode choices on performance varies across subnational regions. Firms must therefore be more discriminating in formulating entry strategies to regionally heterogeneous countries.

Résumé :
Triaxiality function (Rv) has been known as one of the important factors that responsible for damage initiation in adhesive bonding. Damage evolution law for low cycle fatigue (LCF) is function of Rv, von Mises equivalent stress (Seqv) and number of cycles (N). From previous research, it was found that the Rv values of two cases: bulk adhesives and single lap joint (SLJ), were close to unity. Those values are uncontrollable. Meanwhile, the damage equation for general solution contains Rv as an independent variable. There is need to choose another joint type that can characterise Rv as an independent variable. This paper presents the choice of scarf joint as specimen that can simulate variation of Rv. Several types of adhesive joints have been modelled and analysed using ANSYS as finite element analysis (FEA) tool. In ANSYS, Rv values were calculated directly from direct output results: von Misses equivalent stress and Hydrostatic stress. From FEA, it was shown that Rv changed as a function of adhesive bondline angle of the scarf joint. The values of Rv are constant along adhesive line except at the free edges. This choice is better than Cleavage joint where the values of Rv are not constant along adhesive line due to the presence of bending moment.

Résumé :
Most upper-extremity musculoskeletal models represent the glenohumeral joint with an inherently stable ball-and-socket, but the physiological joint requires active muscle coordination for stability. The authors evaluated sensitivity of common predicted outcomes (instability, net glenohumeral reaction force, and rotator cuff activations) to different implementations of active stabilizing mechanisms (constraining net joint reaction direction and incorporating normalized surface electromyography [EMG]). Both EMG and reaction force constraints successfully reduced joint instability. For flexion, incorporating any normalized surface EMG data reduced predicted instability by 54.8%, whereas incorporating any force constraint reduced predicted instability by 43.1%. Other outcomes were sensitive to EMG constraints, but not to force constraints. For flexion, incorporating normalized surface EMG data increased predicted magnitudes of joint reaction force and rotator cuff activations by 28.7% and 88.4%, respectively. Force constraints had no influence on these predicted outcomes for all tasks evaluated. More restrictive EMG constraints also tended to overconstrain the model, making it challenging to accurately track input kinematics. Therefore, force constraints may be a more robust choice when representing stability.

Résumé :
Patient choice and shared decision-making are priorities in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The choices facilitated by UK IBD services were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic from when it began to affect the UK in early 2020, with an almost overnight stoppage of face-to-face outpatient clinic appointments and a recognition that some IBD treatments, such as steroids, may have a negative impact on patient outcome. Many IBD services struggled with staff redeployment and growing demand from unwell and concerned patients. Subsequent changes in treatment pathways resulted in some patients accessing biologic therapies at earlier stages than previously. The need to involve patients in decisions regarding their care became more important than ever, due to the potential impact of the pandemic on their disease and treatment pathway. This impact interacted with other key factors affecting patient choice, such as the perceived and real-world costs of biologic and biosimilar treatments. This review looks at how COVID-19 affected patient choice and how IBD clinical nurse specialists can use the principles of joint decision-making to move forward in developing IBD services for the future. Résumé :
Osteoarthritis of the talocrural joint accounts for only 4% of cases of degenerative disease of the musculoskeletal system. Unlike other joints, idiopathic OA of the ankle joint is identified in only 7% of patients. Until the end of the 1960’s, arthrodesis was the treatment of choice in advanced OA of ankle joint. Absolute indications for arthrodesis include irreversible loss of joint anatomy, neurological conditions, advanced osteoporosis and chronic inflammation. Currently, the surgical treatment of ankle joint OA relies on third-generation endoprostheses of the ankle. Arthroplasty is indicated in patients under 60 years of age with no history of non-orthopaedic co-morbidities, engaging in little physical activity, with an intact joint axis and satisfactory mobility and non-smoking. This article analyzes the available literature on the results of surgical treatment in patients with osteoarthritis of the talocrural joint treated with arthrodesis or arthroplasty, taking into consideration the strict indications for each of these surgical methods.

Résumé :
In-parallel systems can have some active and some passive joints (i.e., joints with and without joint actuators). The questions that we address in this paper are: how to choose the active and passive joints, how to know whether a set of active joints is sufficient, redundant, or minimal to control the end-effector, and whether there exists a unique choice of active actuators. Our approach to study this problem is based on instantaneous properties of series chains as derived from the theory of screw systems. In this framework, we identify those screws that correspond to the joint actuators of the component series chains. Once the correspondence is made, the sought after actuator properties are deduced from the vector space properties of these screws.

Résumé :
Joint destination-mode travel choice models are developed for intercity long-distance travel among sixteen cities in Yangtze River Delta Megaregion of China. The model is developed for all the trips in the sample and also by two different trip purposes, work-related business and personal business trips, to accommodate different time values and attraction factors. A nested logit modeling framework is applied to model trip destination and mode choices in two different levels, where the lower level is a mode choice model and the upper level is a destination choice model. The utility values from various travel modes in the lower level are summarized into a composite utility, which is then specified into the destination choice model as an intercity impedance factor. The model is then applied to predict the change in passenger number from Shanghai to Yangzhou between scenarios with and without high-speed rail service to demonstrate the applicability. It is helpful for understanding and modeling megaregional travel destination and mode choice behaviors in the context of developing country.

Résumé :
A nested multinomial logit (MNL) model is used to estimate the joint choice of moving and housing selection. The coefficients are derived from a sequential application of the standard MNL model using maximum likelihood. The choice of the dwelling type is followed by choice of neighborhood and finally by the choice of moving or staying. The models are estimated for three household categories and nine neighborhoods with data from the Rand Corporation Housing Allowance Supply Experiment. The dwelling-type choice model fits reasonably well and shows the expected significant impact of space on dwelling choice. The neighborhood choice model has smaller coefficients and is less successful. The alternative specific constants play a much larger role in determining the choice probabilities for neighborhoods. The final model of mobility choice exhibits a good fit for all the household categories. The results provide overall support for the sequential modelling approach outlined in this paper.

Résumé :
As an undisputed material of choice to guarantee reliability in a broad range of high performance and safety-critical applications in the electrical contacts and connectors, AuAgCu alloy was soldered with Ag-plated Cu wire using Sn-based solder. To clarify the embrittlement and strength reduction of the gold soldered joint, the microstructure and its influence on the macroand micro-mechanical properties of the soldered joint under various thermal aging conditions were studied. The result indicated that, taking the mechanical property consideration alone, Sn-based solder could be used to join AuAgCu alloy. Different from the embrittlement and strength reduction of the soldered joint of pure gold, although the brittle fracture features appeared in mechanical test of the soldered joints, the shear strength of soldered joint after thermal aging at 125 °C almost did not decrease in comparison with that before thermal aging. Nevertheless, too high temperature and long time still had bad influence on mechanical properties. Otherwise, thermal aging had a large effect on the IMCs layer, as aging temperature elevated and aging time increased, IMCs layer became thicker, more complex components and multiply-sublayers structure with different microhardness. The study provides a fundamental understanding for gold alloy soldering.

Résumé :
The success of renal transplantation depends on lifelong immunosuppression. This can lead to a high incidence of avascular necrosis of major joints in the body for which arthroplasty is the treatment of choice. The risk of surgical complications is high in these patients, and there is no current set of cohesive perioperative management guidelines. In this review, we discuss the perioperative management of renal transplant patients undergoing elective total joint arthroplasty.

Résumé :
This study examined the relationship between target firms’ financial statement comparability and bidder firms’ boundary decisions. The study used initial public offering (IPO) firms as target firms to test the impact of asymmetric information and signaling on investing bidder firms’ boundary decisions, such as joint ventures or acquisitions. In the IPO market, as an experimental setting, bidder firms are unfamiliar with issuing firms because they have little information about them prior to the IPO. This study argues that IPO firms with higher accounting comparability show lower information asymmetry. Consistent with this argument, we found that IPO firms’ accounting comparability has a positive probability of becoming a target for either a joint venture or acquisition, or an acquisition instead of a joint venture. This study contributes to the literature, financial statement comparability, and joint venture and acquisition decisions to measure the degree to which information asymmetry affects corporate investment strategy using a unique experimental setting of IPO firms.

Résumé :
AbstractThis study investigates how family control influences entry mode choice between joint ventures and wholly owned subsidiaries. Based on past studies revealing family-controlled firms’ unique concerns regarding the preservation of socioemotional wealth, the researchers posit that, firms with higher family control respond more drastically to perceived environmental uncertainty when choosing their entry mode. The researchers hypothesize that, when perceiving high environmental uncertainty, firms with higher versus lower family control are more likely to choose joint ventures. However, when perceiving low environmental uncertainty, firms with higher versus lower family control tend to choose wholly owned subsidiaries. The empirical results obtained from a sample of 1,644 investments undertaken by publicly listed companies in Taiwan support the hypotheses.

Résumé :
BACKGROUND: In the Russian Federation, over 400,000 patients with thermal injuries are registered yearly, with approximately 30% of them requiring hospitalization. Physicians pay special attention to the rehabilitation of patients with complications of deep burns. According to several authors, deep burns occur in 47% of cases. The most common complications of deep burns are contractures and limb deformities. Shoulder contractures occur in over 50% of patients. The outcomes and terms of a patients return to active social and working life depend on the timeliness and selection of an optimal surgical intervention from a wide range of reconstructive and plastic techniques. AIM: This study aimed to improve the functional and esthetic results of surgical treatment in patients with postburn shoulder joint contractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2011 to 2020, 198 patients underwent surgery, including 59% women and 41% men. Right shoulder, left shoulder, and right and left shoulder simultaneous joint contractures occurred in 54.5%, 38.5%, and 7% of cases, respectively. The patients age ranged from 18 to 72 years, and 99% of them were of working age. The scope of preoperative examination included clinical data, photographic documentation, duplex vascular scanning, and determination of the degree of contracture using a mechanical goniometer. Patients with grade I, II, and III shoulder joint lesions accounted for 29%, 60%, and 11% of the total number of cases, respectively. Early surgical rehabilitation prevents the development of secondary myogenic and arthrogenic contractures and accelerates the patients social reintegration. Local tissue plasty using the armpit adipodermal tongue-shaped flap, a nonperforated full-layer or split skin graft, a rotated flap based on perforating vessels, and the expander stretching method were used to eliminate contractures. RESULTS: Bacterial infection, total and marginal necrosis, hematomas, and seromas were not observed in the immediate postoperative period. Complete elimination of the shoulder joint contracture was achieved in 63% of cases, whereas joint mobility increased by over 60 in 30% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: The algorithm presented for choosing a method of surgical rehabilitation for patients with shoulder joint contractures leads to an increase in the efficiency of reconstructive surgery after burn injuries.

Résumé :
We model the joint distribution of choice probabilities and decision times in binary decisions as the solution to a problem of optimal sequential sampling, where the agent is uncertain of the utility of each action and pays a constant cost per unit time for gathering information. We show that choices are more likely to be correct when the agent chooses to decide quickly, provided the agent’s prior beliefs are correct. This better matches the observed correlation between decision time and choice probability than does the classical drift-diffusion model (DDM), where the agent knows the utility difference between the choices.
