Résumé :
In the 1320s, a group of astronomers in Paris recast the Alfonsine Tables composed in Toledo in about 1272 under the patronage of Alfonso X, king of Castile and León. The tables compiled in Paris by a first generation of Alfonsine astronomers, including John Vimond, John of Murs, and John of Lignères, reached England, and were disseminated all over Europe, progressively becoming the main tool in computational astronomy. In this paper, we focus on an anonymous set that seems to be the earliest evidence of the Parisian Alfonsine Tables in England.

London composers competed for a music prize in 1701, setting William Congreve's libretto on the judgment of Paris, a beauty contest among Juno, Pallas and Venus. Paris, contest judge, exiled prince and amorous shepherd, prefers Venus, placing love above Juno's promised empire and Pallas's martial success. This essay reveals the general political meanings of the judgment of Paris myth, shows how the tale had been used to critique Charles II and James II, examines the political beliefs of the sponsors and librettist, and demonstrates how music by John Eccles, Daniel Purcell and John Weldon supported the politics of Congreve's libretto.

Abstract This article presents an alternative use of The Church and the Kingdom, a homily that Giorgio Agamben addressed to the Bishop of Paris and high-ranked Church officials at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, in 2009. Taking advantage of the biblical and patristic sources of the homily, this article places the speech within the Christian tradition, treating it as if it was a Christian homily. It argues that the Church and the Kingdom lay the foundations for the new political comprising a dialectical tension between the State and the Church. The alternative politics of this new political is further developed by bringing together John Chrysostom, the philosopher Agamben and the theologian Stanley Hauerwas. This coming together leads to a politics of a life as strangers, sojourners and refugees.

Résumé :
The Dominican John of Paris (d. 1306) wrote a tract De potestate regia et papali which would later influence fifteenth-century conciliarists and seventeenth-century republicans. But the manuscript tradition shows no widespread diffusion of the work in its own times, and, according to Leclercq, the Depotestate does not figure amongst the works attributed to John of Paris in ancient Dominican catalogues of Dominican authors. It has long been thought that it should be dated c. 13023 as a contribution to the debate between Boniface VIII and Philip the Fair of France. John has been judged a major advocate of the royal position and his treatise has been taken to be a principal literary weapon in Philip’s arsenal against the Pope. It has also been judged by many to be a single-issue treatise of great coherence.

In this paper, we analyse and compare two sets of tables in the framework of Alfonsine astronomy composed by John of Lignères and his disciple, John of Saxony, respectively, both belonging to the first generation of scholars using the Alfonsine tables in Paris in the early fourteenth century. John of Lignères’s almanac is limited to the five planets, whereas the similar work by John of Saxony deals with the two luminaries as well. Moreover, there are other differences between these sets of tables concerning their principle of organization, precision, and accuracy.

Résumé :
The Protestant community is articulated through liturgy, history, and drama. Liturgy teaches communal bonds and scripts their enactment, while narrative and dramatic depictions of the collective past appeal to the imagination of readers and viewers. Liturgy and literature are joined by the participation they invite, which engages parishioners, readers, and audiences with questions of affiliation and collectivity. Lack of attention to the ways Renaissance texts pondered over and produced bonds of commonality has sidetracked us from the communal nature of the period. We need to reevaluate such bonds to better understand how English culture imagined relationships between individual and community, and between people and institutions---including church and theatre. When orthodox writing is treated as doctrine and praxis, and not as a means for political indoctrination, we gain a different understanding of the potential for human relationships, one more generous and reciprocal than the model of coercion that has dominated literary studies. Such reciprocity is found in Church of England liturgy, and in the imaginative space of Foxe's Acts and Monuments, which seeks to forge the Protestant community through an ethics of reading. Imaginative space was also a public space, and Shakespeare's King John and Marlowe's The Massacre at Paris reflect upon religious affiliation in moments of war and atrocity; both plays represent very tangled lines of identification that do not endorse Catholic-Protestant factions but undo them. Religious writing and public theatre explored the precarious balance between community and individual, offering readers and audiences a vehicle for thinking about their own immediate lives and their sense of belonging.

Our thesis aims to analyze the conditions for the exercise and normalization of power in the French intellectual context of the second half of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century through the study of Jean de Paris' De potestate regia et papali, whose central argument is based on a reconsideration of the extent of papal power, via royal power, in order to provide a precise definition of the institutional spheres of his time. The De potestate, as a political and polemical treatise, seeks to be part of a debate that traces back to the sources of the medieval conflict between regnum and sacerdotium, thus allowing us to appreciate the evolution of the thought of the masters of that era on the subject. How and why does power become the subject of philosophical reflection, enabling a rethinking of the relations between the Church and the State during this period? To answer this question, we have chosen to show how Jean de Paris' discourse is structured and how it fits into a clear philosophical approach and a doctrinal universe unique to him, thus enabling the consideration of the conditions for the existence of a legislative and autonomous State

Chilton, Eric. « Recreating Nature : Ecocritical Readings of Yosemite and Grand Canyon ». Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195485.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In Recreating Nature: Ecocritical Readings of Yosemite and Grand Canyon, I examine the intersections of culture and nature in two prominent national parks, and I consider the implications of nature-tourism in the environmental discourse of the U.S. Covering a period from 1848 to the present, my project aims to correct an oversight in scholarship about the park system, in which legacies of colonialism and imperialism--when addressed at all--tend to be historicized and framed as the age-old sins of a presumably reformed national politic. Instead, I examine both historical and present-day developments, emphasizing the profound cultural influence of the places we designate as natural. I define ecocriticism as an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor attuned to the interconnectedness of things. My methodology is to engage texts, images and other expressions of the national parks in a process of extended close reading and comparative analysis. While observing the particular contexts of each case, I attempt to locate these texts amidst the broadest but most essential critical terrain: they each negotiate a dialogical relationship between culture and nature. By setting the stage for examining the human and its relation to the non-human other, the parks have become key sites for displaying the recreation of nature. After my introduction I discuss John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra, focusing on an episode where Muir risks his life for a view from Yosemite Falls. I also consider Muir's failure to empathize with Native Americans he encountered. In my next chapter I analyze John Wesley Powell's Exploration by focusing on his attempt to assert authority over a region by prioritizing the scientific tone in his writing. Next I synthesize historical and contemporary sources, discussing Mary Colter's Grand Canyon architecture alongside the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottom walkway on the Hualapai Indian reservation. In the following chapter I compare the acrophobia-inducing photographs of George Fiske and Emery Kolb. Finally, I discuss transit real and imagined in Grand Canyon and Yosemite, considering the utopian potential of national parks. I close by revisiting questions about our changing environmental discourse and about the future of ecocriticism.

Résumé :
In 1867, the budding naturalist and future father of our national parks, John Muir, embarked on his thousand-mile walk to the Gulf from Jeffersonville, Indiana, to Cedar Key, Florida. Almost 150 years later I undertook the same journey, retracing the wilderness advocate’s footsteps through the South to catalog all that has changed in a century and a half of progress, to try and better understand the inception of his environmental ethics, and to learn to see the world as he did, harmonious, interconnected, rejuvenating and imbued with a pervasive spirituality. The chapters of this thesis retell selected legs of that journey.

How can one use nature without unsettling its equilibrium or impair its beauty? That is the question that John Muir (1838-1914), an American writer of Scottish background, tried to answer throughout his life. Given that he lived in a culture emphasising utilitarianism and materialism, John Muir set forth an usual viewpoint which announced twentieth-century ecological thinking. Muir was a talented naturalist whose work rested on a scientific knowledge of nature. Moreover the combined influence of Christianity and transcendentalism led him to promote a moral use of nature at a time when American society was becoming more industrial and more urban. So the question arises: was Muir a radical thinker? As he endeavoured to promote the US national park system, Muir came to develop a less demanding conception of the use of nature. But the question is, how did he manage to combine the promotion of recreation and the ecological notion of nature as biosphere which implies a radical change in the way American people ought to act as regards nature. These tensions and paradoxes are precisely what make John Muir's works interesting and challenging

Résumé :

In this paper we investigate small and young companies’ motives for internationalization. There are many reasons for companies to engage in foreign direct investment. This study is based on theories including four categories of internationalization drivers that motivate firms to establish themselves abroad. Theses categories consist of market, resource, efficiency, and strategic resources seeking motives. A fifth category was added in order to include network seeking motives.

The survey was conducted using a web based questionnaire. The target population consisted of companies that are members of nine Swedish business incubators and science parks. E-mails were sent to representatives in the incubators and science parks and were then forwarded to the companies, asking them to participate in the study.

We conclude that the member companies of Swedish incubators and science parks responded most positively to network and market seeking motives. We therefore regard the companies as network seekers and market seekers. Four motives were by the responders associated with the highest degree of importance. Two were in the category of network seeking motives: starting new collaborations and staying close to main client or supplier. The other two were in the category of market seeking motives: reaching new markets and limitations of the home market.

Joseph Bologne, Le Chevalier de Saint- Georges was a Gemini (June 9,1745). His historical background as a biracial man of color who took France by storm, England and even the second president, of the United States, John Adams stated; “St Georges was such an incredible shot that he could hit a tiny button on the coat or waistcoat of the greatest masters.” “He could even hit a coin as it was tossed in midair.” I will discuss his early upbringing on the island of Guadeloupe from a union of a wealthy white Frenchman and a slave woman named Nanon. In France, he rose to unbelievable heights as a fencer, a composer, conductor, violin virtuoso, an artful equestrian, an exceptional marksman, an elegant dancer, an accomplished man of his time and one of the most important musicians of the classical period. He was known as Le Mozart Noir. His rise took place during the Age of Enlightenment. His contemporaries were Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, Montesquieu and John Locke. My lecture will explore, in detail : His Childhood in the Antilles His ascension and success at Paris Becoming a Gentleman Saint Georges in Londo The French Revolution Henry Angelo wrote, “The Chevalier de Saint- Georges died at Paris regretted by his friends and by the few who knew how to feel for, or excuse, the imperfections of humanity---qualities from which none of us can hope to be exempt.”

Résumé :
The paper gives a basic description of the stratified charge combustion process in the Stratified Charge Omnivorous Rotary Engine - SCORE. The inherent advantages of the Wankel geometry combined with spark ignition of a stratified mixture for a unique combustion cycle are explained with diagrams. The discussion points out why the engine is neither octane or cetane sensitive, making it a truly multifuel (omnivorous) intermittent combustion engine. A brief description of the parts and their function help to explain the inherent compactness of the engine and confirm its simplicity and efficiency. The engine specific size, weight, air flow and fuel flow are compared to an equivalent output turbine engine to place the performance in a familiar context. A most impressive feature of the engine, attractive cost of production, is demonstrated by the modular nature of its design. This feature is amplified by an in-depth description of the “Family of Engines” concept, highlighting the large number of common parts in a family of one to six rotor models. The ability to cover a complete market segment with one geometry is attractive for production costs, service, training and logistics. Modular design also enhances application flexibility. Development programs are underway for a diversity of applications for families of SCORE engines. Each application utilizes the unique characteristics available with this engine and is further justified by the economies realized in volume production. Thus low volume, high power applications (1000kW and up) can realize savings by utilizing the same major parts tooled for higher volume use in smaller engines. Some potential applications are discussed with particular emphasis on marine installations. Specific comparisons with other powerplants for shipboard electrical generation are presented.

Résumé :
Religiosity is historically firmly rooted in Slovakia. It also has a historical foundation in the Nitra Diocese, which confirms the establishment of the Nitra Diocese in 880 by Pope John VIII. at the request of Prince Svätopluk. The aim of the article is to analyze the impact of religious tourism on the development of two selected rural municipalities in the Nitra diocese - Pozba and Močenok. From a methodological point of view, the basis was the excerpt of print and electronic information sources of various kinds, results of pilgrimage places questionnaires and their comparative analysis. Critical access to information was supported by communication with the Episcopal Office in Nitra, interviews with parish administrators, mayors and residents. The field survey was associated with the documentation of sacral spaces. The result of the work is the identification of forms, resp. manifestations of the functioning of the secular and ecclesial community in both municipalities. While the municipality of Pozba represents a traditional center of pilgrim tourism, the municipality of Močenok has transformed from this position into a center of Christian theater, which is also perceived at the national level. Both municipalities support the activities of ecclesiastical communities and localities of pilgrimage sites are perceived as inseparable parts of municipalities. In both municipalities, which are also part of European cultural routes, religious tourism significantly contributes to the visibility of the municipality and conditions its development, especially in connection with the construction of infrastructure.

Résumé :
Set similarity join, which finds all pairs of similar sets in a collection, plays an important role in data cleaning and integration. Many algorithms have been proposed to efficiently answer set similarity join on single-attribute data. However, real-world data often contain multiple attributes. In this paper, we propose a framework to enhance existing algorithms with additional filters for dealing with multi-attribute data. We then present a simple, yet effective filter based on lightweight indexes, for which exact and probabilistic implementation alternatives are evaluated. Finally, we devise a cost model to identify the best attribute ordering to reduce processing time. Our experimental results show that our approach is effective and significantly outperforms previous work.

Résumé :
Some key criteria in the optimal currency area literature are that countries should join a currency union if they have closer international trade links and more symmetric business cycles. However, both criteria are endogenous. Frankel and Rose (1998) find that trade intensity increases cycle correlation among industrial countries. We study whether the same result holds true for the case of developing countries, as their different patterns of international trade and specialization may lead to cyclical asymmetries among them and between industrial and developing countries. We gather annual information for 147 countries for 1960-99 (33,676 country pairs) and find: (i) countries with higher bilateral trade exhibit higher business cycle synchronization, with an increase of one standard deviation in bilateral trade intensity raising the output correlation from 0.05 to 0.09 for all country pairs; (ii) countries with more asymmetric structures of production exhibit a smaller business cycle correlation; (iii) the impact of trade integration on business cycles is higher for industrial countries than both developing and industrial-developing country pairs; (iv) a one standard deviation increase in bilateral trade intensity leads to surges in output correlation from 0.25 to 0.39 among industrial countries, from 0.08 to 0.10 for our sample of industrial-developing country pairs, and from 0.03 to 0.06 among developing countries; (v) the impact of trade intensity on cycle correlation is smaller the greater the production structure asymmetries between the countries.

Résumé :
This report documents the acquisition of source data, and calculation of land cover summary statistics datasets for four National Park Service Greater Yellowstone Network park units and six custom areas of analysis: Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Teton National Park, John D. Rockefeller Jr.?Memorial Parkway, Yellowstone National Park, and the six custom areas of analysis. The source data and land cover calculations are available for use within the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Program. Land cover summary statistics datasets can be calculated for all geographic regions within the extent of the NPS; this report includes statistics calculated for the conterminous United States. The land cover summary statistics datasets are calculated from multiple sources, including Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium products in the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and the United States Geological Survey?s (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center products in the Land Change Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection (LCMAP) raster dataset. These summary statistics calculate land cover at up to three classification scales: Level 1, modified Anderson Level 2, and Natural versus Converted land cover. The output land cover summary statistics datasets produced here for the four Greater Yellowstone Network park units and six custom areas of analysis utilize the most recent versions of the source datasets (NLCD and LCMAP). These land cover summary statistics datasets are used in the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program, including the NPS Environmental Settings Monitoring Protocol and may be used by networks and parks for additional efforts.

Boyle, M., et Elizabeth Rico. Terrestrial vegetation monitoring at Fort Matanzas National Monument : 2019 data summary. National Park Service, mai 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrds-2293409.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) conducts long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring as part of the nationwide Inventory and Monitoring Program of the National Park Service (NPS). The vegetation community vital sign is one of the primary-tier resources identified by SECN park managers, and it is currently conducted at 15 network parks (DeVivo et al. 2008). Monitoring plants and their associated communities over time allows for targeted understanding of ecosystems within the SECN geography, which provides managers information about the degree of change within their parks’ natural vegetation. 2019 marks the first year of conducting this monitoring effort at four SECN parks, including Fort Matanzas National Monument (FOMA). Nine vegetation plots, located on Anastasia and Rattlesnake Islands, were established at Fort Matanzas National Monument in June. Data collected in each plot included species richness across multiple spatial scales, species-specific cover and constancy, species-specific woody stem seedling/sapling counts and adult tree (greater than 10 centimeters [3.9 inches {in}]) diameter at breast height (DBH), overall tree health, landform, soil, observed disturbance, and woody biomass (i.e., fuel load) estimates. This report summarizes the baseline (year 1) terrestrial vegetation data collected at Fort Matanzas National Monument in 2019. Data were stratified across two dominant broadly defined habitats within the park (Maritime Upland Forests/Shrublands and Maritime Open Uplands). Noteworthy findings include: Eighty-two vascular plant taxa (species or lower) were observed across nine vegetation plots, including eight species not previously documented within the park. The most frequently encountered species in each broadly defined habitat included: Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands: saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), southern/eastern red cedar (Juniperus silicicola + virginiana), American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), and American burnweed (Erectites hieraciifolius). Maritime Open Uplands: sea oats (Uniola paniculata), earleaf greenbriar (Smilax auriculata), and dixie sandmat (Euphorbia bombensis). ne non-native species, Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolia), categorized as invasive by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council (FLEPPC 2019) was encountered in one Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland plot during this monitoring effort. There were not any rare plants tracked by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS 2020) found during this monitoring effort. All plants located in these monitoring plots are fairly common throughout Florida, as well as across the Southeast Coast. Three species observed, however, are on the FDACS 2020 list of commercially exploited plants within the state. These include saw palmetto, cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum), and coontie (Zamia integrifolia var. umbrosa). Southern/eastern red cedar and cabbage palmetto (Sabal palmetto) were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of the Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland habitat type. Species that dominated the sapling and seedling strata of this type included yaupon and cabbage palmetto. More than 75% of the trees measured in the parks Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland habitat type were alive and experiencing healthy vigor. Of the 22 trees that were dead, more than 50% of those were southern/eastern red cedar. Most of those individuals that were observed with moderate or severe decline and greater than 50% dieback were southern/eastern red cedars. Although red bay (Persea borbonia) was identified as one of the “principal understory tree” species within Fort Matanzas National Monument’s maritime forests in 2004 (Zomlefer et al. 2004), tree-sized individuals were rarely detected on plots during this monitoring effort. This may be in part due to the detection of laurel wilt disease within St. Johns County in 2006 (USDA 2021). Based on the low detection...

Bourekba, Moussa. Climate Change and Violent Extremism in North Africa. The Barcelona Centre for International Affairs, octobre 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.55317/casc014.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
As climate change intensifies in many parts of the world, more and more policymakers are concerned with its effects on human security and violence. From Lake Chad to the Philippines, including Afghanistan and Syria, some violent extremist (VE) groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State exploit crises and conflicts resulting from environmental stress to recruit more followers, expand their influence and even gain territorial control. In such cases, climate change may be described as a “risk multiplier” that exacerbates a number of conflict drivers. Against this backdrop, this case study looks at the relationship between climate change and violent extremism in North Africa, and more specifically the Maghreb countries Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which are all affected by climate change and violent extremism. There are three justifications for this thematic and geographical focus. Firstly, these countries are affected by climate change in multiple ways: water scarcity, temperature variations and desertification are only a few examples of the numerous cross- border impacts of climate change in this region. Secondly, these three countries have been and remain affected by the activity of violent extremist groups such as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the Islamic State organisation (IS) and their respective affiliated groups. Algeria endured a civil war from 1991 to 2002 in which Islamist groups opposed the government, while Morocco and Tunisia have been the targets of multiple terrorist attacks by jihadist individuals and organisations. Thirdly, the connection between climate change and violent extremism has received much less attention in the literature than other climate-related security risks. Although empirical research has not evidenced a direct relationship between climate change and violent extremism, there is a need to examine the ways they may feed each other or least intersect in the context of North African countries. Hence, this study concentrates on the ways violent extremism can reinforce vulnerability to the effects of climate change and on the potential effects of climate change on vulnerability to violent extremism. While most of the existing research on the interplay between climate change and violent extremism concentrates on terrorist organisations (Asaka, 2021; Nett and Rüttinger, 2016; Renard, 2008), this case study focuses on the conditions, drivers and patterns that can lead individuals to join such groups in North Africa. In other words, it looks at the way climate change can exacerbate a series of factors that are believed to lead to violent radicalisation – “a personal process in which individuals adopt extreme political, social, and/or religious ideals and aspirations, and where the attainment of particular goals justifies the use of indiscriminate violence” (Wilner and Dubouloz, 2010: 38). This approach is needed not only to anticipate how climate change could possibly affect violent extremism in the medium and long run but also to determine whether and how the policy responses to both phenomena should intersect in the near future. Does climate change affect the patterns of violent extremism in North Africa? If so, how do these phenomena interact in this region? To answer these questions, the case study paper first gives an overview of the threat posed by violent extremism in the countries of study and examines the drivers and factors that are believed to lead to violent extremism in North Africa. Secondly, it discusses how these drivers could be affected by the effects of climate change on resources, livelihoods, mobility and other factors. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the possible interactions between climate change and violent extremism in the future and the implications for policymaking.

Breeding bird monitoring protocol for the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network : Narrative, version 3.0. National Park Service, août 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2300001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program provided funding for the development of this bird monitoring protocol and continues to fund monitoring of the resource in network parks. Numerous NPS personnel and volunteers have contributed in-kind support to the development of this protocol and continue to assist with annual surveys. This protocol in an earlier version (Version 1.0) benefited from comments by Dr. John Sauer (USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center), Dr. Rich Camp (USGS Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center) and Dr. Rodney Siegel (Institute for Bird Populations). In 2008, the protocol was revised (Version 2.0) to reflect the network’s expansion of its bird monitoring efforts into additional parks and the turning over of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska, to the Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network.
