Résumé :
Two novel, Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, halotolerent bacteria, strains JG 03T and JG 05 were isolated from the rhizosphere of Salicornia brachiata, an extreme halophyte. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that they were closely related to members of the genus Zhihengliuella, with sequence similarities of 96.9–99.1 %. The sequence similarity of strains JG 03T and JG 05 with each other was 99.4 %. DNA–DNA hybridization of JG 03T and JG 05 with other species of the genus Zhihengliuella with validly published names showed reassociation values of 19.8 %–53.4 % and a value of 91.4 % between each other. The peptidoglycan type of both strains was A4α and MK-9 and MK-10 were the predominant menaquinones. The predominant fatty acid in JG 03T was anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. However, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 were the major fatty acids in strain JG 05. The DNA G+C content of strains JG 03T and JG 05 was 70.0 and 70.1 mol%, respectively. In nutrient broth medium both strains grew at NaCl concentrations of up to 15 % (w/v). On the basis of chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic analyses, strains JG 03T and JG 05 should be affiliated to the genus Zhihengliuella. Strains JG 03T and JG 05 represent a novel species of the genus Zhihengliuella for which the name Zhihengliuella somnathii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JG 03T ( = DSM 23187T = IMCC 253T).

Résumé :
Two novel Psychrobacter-like bacterial strains, JG-219T and JG-220, were isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. Cells of strains JG-219T and JG-220 were Gram-negative, non-motile coccobacilli. Growth of the two strains was observed at 4–32 °C. They grew optimally in the presence of 2–5 % (w/v) NaCl. Strains JG-219T and JG-220 contained C18 : 1 ω9c and C17 : 1 ω8c as the major fatty acids and Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone. The DNA G+C contents of strains JG-219T and JG-220 were 43·5 and 43·0 mol%, respectively. The two strains showed no difference in their 16S rRNA gene sequences but exhibited minor differences in their phenotypic properties. Strains JG-219T and JG-220 exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95·2–98·7 % to the type strains of recognized Psychrobacter species. The mean level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strains JG-219T and JG-220 was 84·4 %. The two strains exhibited levels of DNA–DNA relatedness of 1·5–32·9 % to the type strains of eight phylogenetically related Psychrobacter species. On the basis of phenotypic data and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, the two strains were classified as representing a novel species within the genus Psychrobacter, Psychrobacter cibarius sp. nov. The type strain is JG-219T (=KCTC 12256T=DSM 16327T).

Résumé :
Objective. This paper systematically assessed the efficacy and safety of Jingtong granule (JG) for cervical radiculopathy (CR).Methods. Randomized controlled trials comparing JG with no intervention, placebo, or conventional therapies were retrieved. The trials testing JG combined with conventional therapies versus conventional therapies were also enrolled. Study selection, methodological assessment, data extraction, and analysis were conducted in accordance with the Cochrane standards. The strength of evidence was evaluated according to GRADE approach.Results. Three trials with 400 participants were included. Methodological quality was evaluated as generally low. One study found that JG showed significant difference on decreasing pain scores compared with placebo. Meta-analysis indicated that JG plus conventional analgesic exhibited a significant immediate effect on the pain scores (WMD = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.29 to 1.98;P<0.00001). Additionally, JG combined with analgesic presented beneficial immediate effect on neck disability index. However, the treatment effects of JG demonstrated in the trials were not large, and the safety of JG was unproven. Finally the evidence level was evaluated to be low.Conclusions. Our results indicated that JG showed some potential benefits for CR. Nevertheless, treatment effects are uncertain due to both the methodological concerns and the very modest reported improvements.

Résumé :
This paper presents the idea of the Job Guarantee (JG), which is a logical extension of the paradigm of a tax-driven fiat currency. The JG involves the government offering a public purpose-oriented job with a fixed hourly wage and job benefits to anyone willing to work. The JG as a bottom-up approach is locally administered but federally funded. As the analytical lens of MMT reveals, a monetarily sovereign government is always able to provide the spending required. Macroeconomically, the JG works as an automatic countercyclical stabilizer and an excellent tool for aggregated demand management, ensuring the economy is continuously operating at full capacity. On top, the JG uses an employed buffer stock approach as a superior means to maintain price stability. Next to its favourable macroeconomic impacts, the JG offers many social benefits, particularly related to continuous employment, working conditions in the private sector, power relations in the labour market and democracy. While the JG and Universal Basic Income (UBI) are often discussed as comparable, competing policy proposals, the JG addresses more macroeconomic and social issues than the UBI does. This paper concludes that the JG qualifies for being the single most effective policy in order to drive the economy towards continuous full employment and price stability while realizing additional social benefits.

Résumé :
A Gram-positive, non-motile, slightly halophilic actinomycete, strain JG-241T, was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain JG-241T grew optimally at 25–30 °C and in the presence of 2–5 % (w/v) NaCl. The physiological and biochemical properties of strain JG-241T were distinguishable from those of recognized Nesterenkonia species. Strain JG-241T had a peptidoglycan type based on l-lys–gly–d-Asp. It contained MK-7, MK-8 and MK-9 as the predominant menaquinones and anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unidentified glycolipid. The DNA G+C content was 68.0 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain JG-241T falls within the radiation of the cluster comprising Nesterenkonia species. Similarity values between the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain JG-241T and those of the type strains of Nesterenkonia species ranged from 96.7 to 99.7 %. DNA–DNA relatedness data and repetitive extragenic palindromic DNA-PCR genomic fingerprinting patterns showed that strain JG-241T differs genetically from recognized Nesterenkonia species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain JG-241T represents a novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia, for which the name Nesterenkonia jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JG-241T (=KCTC 19053T=JCM 12610T).

In this thesis, the interactions of U(VI) with one representative each of the domains Bacteria (Paenibacillus sp. JG TB8) and Archaea (Sulfolobus acidocaldarius) are compared. We demonstrate that at highly acidic conditions (pH ≤ 3), U(VI) is bound to cells of the both strains exclusively via organic phosphate groups. In contrast to this, the U(VI) complexation modes differ between the studied strains at moderate acidic conditions. These differences are assigned to the different cell wall structures of both strains as well as to their different physiological characteristics. We also demonstrate that the aeration conditions can strongly influence the uranium accumulation of facultative anaerobic microorganisms at moderate acidic pH conditions. This finding could clearly be assigned to the dependency of the intrinsic phosphatase activity on the aeration conditions. The second part of this thesis deals with the outermost surface layer (SlaA-layer) of S. acidocaldarius. It was shown that this surface protein is not involved in the U(VI) complexation at highly acidic conditions, covering the physiological pH optimum of S. acidocaldarius. Hence the SlaA layer does not provide a protective function against U(VI) to the cells of this acidophilic archaeon. However, we demonstrated that purified SlaA-layer ghosts (i.e. empty cell sacculi) efficiently interact with gold ions and are a good macromolecular template for the formation of magnetic gold nanoparticles

Hill-Andrews, Oliver. « Interpreting science : JG Crowther and the making of interwar British culture ». Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61526/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the place of science in interwar British culture, and challenges central narratives about the shape of interwar British science. Informed by histories of the nineteenth century that critique a process of professionalization and popularization, I argue that characteristics of nineteenth century science persisted much longer than is commonly assumed. In particular, I show that the boundaries of the scientific community were still quite fluid, that interpreting science for a broad audience was crucial for the making of science (both in the public sphere and in the scientific community, at a time of specialization), and that there were attempts to overcome a supposed divide between the sciences and the arts (in cultural productions and personal relations). These arguments are made through an examination of the life and work of J.G. Crowther (1899-1983). Crowther's life has not yet received extended treatment from historians, but this neglect belies his contemporary importance. Drawing on his extensive archive (and those of his peers) and reviews, I advance the notion of Crowther as a ‘man in the middle' – he was someone who mediated between practising scientists and the public and between practising scientists of different specializations, positioned himself at the centre of the two cultures, and often found himself in the middle ground politically. As such, he exemplifies the state of the pre-Big Science culture of interwar Britain. Conceptually, I develop the term ‘interpreter' to refer to Crowther's role: this term overcomes many of the pitfalls of ‘popularizer', and shows Crowther in an active role, shaping and re-shaping the meanings of science in the public sphere for his own political and professional ends. It is hoped that, by thinking in terms of ‘interpretation', historians will be able to develop more sophisticated understandings of the place of science in twentieth century British culture.

Clement, Tracey Ann. « Mapping The Drowned World ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17344.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Climate-change is the new Cold War. Like the omnipresent threat of nuclear annihilation, climate-change looms in the background, a constant insidious threat: imminent and inexorable, yet ill defined. Written in 1962, during the perpetual slow-burning crisis of the Cold War, J.G. Ballard’s novel The Drowned World reads like an uncanny premonition of the key crisis of our current age: climate-change. As a bridge between the post-war apocalyptic fears of the recent past and current eschatological anxieties, this allegorical work of fiction is a rich source of information. Mapping The Drowned World is driven by the research question: what can we learn about our world by re-reading, re-writing and re-interpreting The Drowned World through the lens of art? This three-pronged methodology has generated three suites of artworks: a series of maps, and two major installations in the form of ruined scale-model cities. In addition, a group exhibition which featured some of these works, alongside works made by five other Australian artists, was staged and documented in a catalogue, also titled Mapping The Drowned World. The written content of this research includes several new analyses of The Drowned World, critiques of the artworks made as part of this project and works made by other artists, and an original interstitial chapter for the novel which recuperates the only female character in The Drowned World. Together, both the creative and written components of this research contribute new knowledge to three fields: scholarship on J.G. Ballard, including contemporary artworks made in direct response to his stories; the field of critical cartography, both textual and visual; and works which respond to eschatological anxiety.

Résumé :
AbstractSmallholder partner farmers under TL-III project were organized into four registered Farmers’ Seed Societies for addressing the challenge of constrained availability of quality seed of improved chickpea varieties in Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh state, India. These seed societies formed in Banda, Hamirpur and Chitrakoot districts contributed towards strengthening the formal seed system of chickpea by contributing 21.8 tons of chickpea seed (FS/TL) of recommended varieties (kabuli: Ujjawal, Shubhra; Desi: JG 14, JG 16 and JAKI 9218) and marketed it to institutionalized seed chains. More than 1500 partner farmers directly received the improved seed through farmers ‘seed societies while 1788 non-partner farmers received it indirectly through social networks. The interventions boosted chickpea productivity from 0.78 to 1.19 t/ha in the project villages. The efforts of the farmers’ societies to strengthen the informal seed system through farmer-to-farmer horizontal diffusion resulted in area enhancement under the introduced chickpea varieties up to 68% in the project villages while putting in place a system for supply of improved chickpea seed which can be replicated in other districts in India.

Résumé :
Abstract The conclusion of the book discusses this case study and its generalizability. It begins by discussing the disparate ways in which the IG and JG comparatively radicalized and institutionalized from the 1970s onwards. The chapter goes on to examine the strategic development of AQ and IS in light of the institutional trajectories of the IG and the JG. Finally, it concludes by examining the contribution of this book to existing debates on political violence and democracy and on the role of ideas before presenting new avenues for future research.

Résumé :
Abstract Chapter 4 analyzes jihadi groups’ strategy institutionalization. The chapter contends that the construction and implementation of armed groups’ strategic views is the product of external and internal developments. In particular, opposition to the Egyptian regime was cemented in prison and religiously justified. The institutional trajectories of both IG and JG then mediated the impact of their exile to Afghanistan and Pakistan during the war against the Soviet Union and ultimate strategic failure to achieve their objectives in Egypt. These trajectories also explain the IG’s renunciation of the applicability of violence in Muslim countries when the JG partially joined AQ.

Résumé :
Abstract Chapter 5 examines how the IG and JG resorted to armed violence in Egypt and abroad through the conjoint analysis of changing state policies, jihadi groups’ institutionalization, and micro-level developments. The chapter argues that jihadi groups’ internal institutionalization accounts for the practicalities of violence beyond stated ideological commitments and changing policing of protest. Strongly institutionalized groups like the IG are better positioned to use violence in line with their tactical and strategic preferences and prevent counterproductive violence, in contrast with weakly institutionalized groups like the JG. In both cases, institutional decay ultimately produced increasingly indiscriminate violence disconnected from the achievement of any long-term strategic objectives.

Résumé :
Abstract The current work performs air-water experiments in three different pipe sizes of 38 mm, 51mm, and 102 mm to investigate the frequencies of plug and slug bubbles in horizontal flows. The local four-sensor conductivity probe is used to establish experimental data for large elongated bubbles. The investigated conditions focus on a relatively high superficial liquid velocity region (1.0 m/s ≤ jf ≤ 4.0 m/s), where limited experimental data are available in the literature. The investigated superficial gas velocity (jg) ranges from 0.19 m/s to 3.0 m/s. In total, 19 conditions are studied. To identify the elongated plugs and slugs, the local four-sensor conductivity probe is located near the top wall. Based on the flow visualization study, the stable plug and slug bubbles cannot be shorter than a pipe diameter. Therefore, a chord length greater than a pipe size is used as a criterion to pick up the elongated plug and slug bubbles. Using the obtained data, the frequencies of plug and slug bubbles are analyzed. For the investigated conditions, the Strouhal number (St) ranges from 0.03 to 1.68, while the St of the existing data in the literature are generally below 0.1. It is found that the frequency of elongated bubbles increases as jf increases, but first increases then decreases as jg increases. This indicates that large elongated bubbles start to coalesce once jg reaches a certain value. This threshold has a higher value of jg than the plug to slug transition point. In addition, the frequency decreases as pipe size increases. The existing correlations in the literature are evaluated using the newly collected data. It is found that the St number-based correlations can predict the data with higher accuracy. New correlations are developed using the new data and they can predict the frequency with an absolute average percentage difference of ±20%.

Résumé :
Air-water two-phase flow patterns in a four by four square lattice rod bundle consisting of an acrylic channel box of 68 mm in width and transparent rods of 12 mm in diameter were observed by utilizing a high speed video camera, FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) tubes for rods, and a fiberscope inserted in a rod. The FEP possesses the same refractive index as water, and thereby, whole flow patterns in the bundle and local flow patterns in subchannels were successfully visualized with little optical distortion. The ranges of liquid and gas volume fluxes, <JG> and <JL>, in the present experiments were 0.1 < <JL> < 2.0 m/s and 0.04 < <JG> < 8.85 m/s, which covered typical two-phase flow patterns appearing in a fuel bundle of a boiling water nuclear reactor. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained: (1) the region of slug flow in the <JG> – <JL> flow pattern diagram is so narrow that it can be regarded as a boundary between bubbly and churn flows, (2) the boundary between bubbly and churn flows is close to the boundary between bubbly and slug flows of the Mishima & Ishii’s flow pattern transition model, and (3) the boundary between churn and annular flows is well predicted by the Mishima & Ishii’s model.

Résumé :
An experimental apparatus is setup to analyze a co-current air-water two phase flow in a 3 mm inner diameter tube with horizontal and vertical orientations. Air is axially injected through a nozzle of 260 μm of inner diameter. Air and water flow rates are accurately controlled at the inlet, covering a range of apparent velocities JL = 0.00118 to 0.0786 m/s, JG = 0.002 to 3.538 m/s for the horizontal tube and JL = 0.00078 to 0.0589 m/s, JG = 0.003 to 3.538 m/s for the upward flow. A fast camera with 250 fps is utilized to visualize the flow patterns. The experiments showed that the flow structures are very sensitive to inlet conditions. Within the covered range of velocities, several flow patterns were observed, namely bubbly flow, bubbly-slug transition flow, slug flow, slug-annular transition flow, annular flow, wavy annular flow and annular flow with dry zones. In the bubbly flow regime, a particular bubbly helical flow is observed before the dispersed bubbly flow.

Résumé :
Abstract In the present paper, the local two-phase flow parameters were measured with a four-sensor optical probe in adiabatic upward air-water two-phase flows in a 6 × 6 vertical rod bundle with rod diameter of 10 mm, pitch of 16.7 mm, square channel box side length of 100 mm and hydraulic equivalent diameter (DH) of 18.7 mm. The local measurements were performed in an octant triangular region of the rod bundle cross-section at the axial position with height-to-diameter ratio (z/DH) of 149 under a total of 16 flow conditions. The local void fraction, interfacial area concentration (IAC), bubble diameter and bubble velocity were obtained in the four-sensor probe measurements. Both of the measured void fraction and IAC show their radial local distributions with the core-peaking and wall-peaking shapes which are closely linked with the superficial velocity of two phases. The distribution shapes tend to change from the core-peaking to the wall-peaking when the superficial liquid velocity (<jf>) increases and the superficial gas velocity (<jg>) decreases. The measured diameters of local bubbles keep the similar values in the measuring cross-section, increase when the <jg> increases and decrease when the <jf> increases. The bubbles behave with the velocities whose main flow direction component keeps a typical radial power-law (core-peaking) profile and whose cross-sectional velocity components show a significant trend of bubbles migrating from the center to the wall region of the channel box especially under high <jf> conditions. The area-averaged results of void fraction and IAC were obtained by a cross-sectional area-averaging scheme. The resultant area-averaged void fraction and IAC were used to check the void fraction predicting capability of two drift-flux correlations and the IAC prediction performance of two IAC correlations respectively. The applicability of these correlations to the rod bundle geometry was discussed and concluded finally in this paper.
