Texte intégralThe bow, which is essential to produce the sound of bowed string instruments, has been little studied. The present work aims to better understand its mechanical behavior in playing situation. To this end, numerical models are developped. The stick, which is prestressed due to hair tension, is modelized by beam finite elements. A corotational formulation is adopted to take into account geometric nonlinearity. A first model (2D) concerns the in-plane behavior of the bow. It is used within a numerical study aiming at showing the influence of making and adjusting parameters on the tightened bow. A second model (3D) takes into account out-of-plane loading that makes the stick bend laterally. A non-destructive procedure to determine mechanical properties of wood and hair is proposed. It is based on an inverse method using the 2D model. As an experimental validation, numerical results obtained with the 3D model are confronted to measurement on two bows, for different settings of camber and hair tension. The effect of prestress on lateral bending stiffness is highlighted. A good agreement is observed. Thus, the model can be considered as predictive and might be used as an aid to bow making. Furthermore, the stability of a bow is a problem considered by bow makers. A phenomenological model based on a simple mechanical system is presented. It aims to give tendancies on conditions at which bifurcation or limit point instability can occur, by drawing an analogy with the bow. The numerical computation of pre- and post-critical behavior of the bow shows similar instability cases. Their possible consequences on playing and making are discussed. Finally, playing tests with musicians are carried out, focusing on the adjustment of camber and hair tension. The results tend to show the influence of the considered adjustment parameters on the assessment of playing qualities

Texte intégralThis thesis delves into the study of climate change by the tools of game theory, investigating strategies for global emissions reduction. The journey begins with an informal introduction, providing insights into the modeling of climate change problems using game theory and optimization—the twin pillars of the thesis. Chapter 2 provides a formal treatment, presenting preliminaries which are instrumental for the subsequent chapters. Graph theory definitions and key concepts in game theory, pivotal to the thesis, are revisited in this foundational chapter. Chapter 3 outlines the motivation for the research subject addressed in this thesis and summarizes the proposed contributions. It critically examines the limitations of the current emission reduction strategies, primarily driven by short-term economic considerations, blocking global efforts. Next, we present a thorough survey of the climate change models and the theoretical frameworks employed for their analysis. Climate models, inspired by IPCC projections, are examined to unravel the circumstances influencing nations’ behavior in emissions reduction. In Chapter 4, we formulate a static game model in the strategic form, allowing us to study the decision-making process and exhibit environmentally conscious behavior. To reach this goal, we conduct a complete analysis of the Nash equilibria of the game. We provide conditions under which the equilibrium is unique and numerically analyze the impact of different modeling choices. The Chapter ends with a brief discussion summarizing the takeaway messages of this part. The study continues in Chapter 5, where the climate change problem is cast as an imitation game. In this setup, the players are minimizing a utility function including socio-economic benefits, global climate change damage, and an imitation term capturing the influence of the other players. The Nash equilibrium analysis unveils a variety of players’ behaviors under climate change awareness and mutual influence. Key parameters, such as the weight of imitation, are numerically analyzed, emphasizing the importance of coordination and cooperation in mitigating climate change. This thesis explores the complex interplay between climate considerations and game theory, providing a nuanced understanding of global emissions reduction strategies. The provided insights contribute to the broad subject of finding sustainable solutions for addressing the urgent issue of global warming

Texte intégralThe abstract interpretation is a general method to compute automatically program invariants. This method leads to solve a non-linear fixed point equation involving a monotone function. Determining numerical invariants in order, for instance, to give bounds on the values taken by the variables of a program, turns out to be equivalent to solving a two-player zero-sum game with stopping options. This observation allows one to transport algorithms from game theory, like policy iteration, to abstract interpretation. The first contribution of this thesis is the generalisation of these abstract polyhedraic numerical domains. We construct a general abstract numerical domain which encompasses all the classical ones. We define an abstract semantic function in terms of a Galois connection. However, evaluating the abstract semantic function is as hard as solving a non-convex global optimization problem. Hence, we define a second semantic function called relaxed semantics constructed from duality theory, which provides a safe overapproximation of the abstract semantic function. The duality theory also motivates the construction of a dynamical policy iteration algorithm to compute numerical invariants. In practice for programs written in affine arithmetic, we combine Shor's relaxation scheme and Lyapunov functions to evaluate the relaxed semantic function and so generate numerical invariants which are the form of truncated ellipsoids. The second contribution concerns policy iteration and computation of the smallest fixed point problem which provides the more precise invariant. We refined the policy iteration algorithm in order to compute the smallest fixed point, in the case of stochastic games. The refinement is based on non-linear Perron-Frobenius theory. However, since the abstract semantic function in the case of interval domain can be interpreted as a Shapley operator in perfect information, we use a weaker notion of differentiability: it is semidifferentiable. The approach by the semiderivatives combined by non-linear spectral radius allows us to characterise the fixed points in the non-expansive case. In the case of non-expansive and piecewise affine (Shapley) operators, the characterisation leads to a termination criteria for policy iteration. When the fixed point found by policy iteration is not minimal, the problem is reduced to finding a non-positive fixed point for a semiderivative map. This vector provides a descent direction which leads to a new policy and then to a strictly smaller fixed point. This approach has also been applied to typical examples arising from game or program verification problems
