Résumé :
In the current paper, a semi-analytical solution is obtained for the problem of the peristaltic motion of Jeffrey nanofluid with heat transfer inside an asymmetric channel. The influences of variable viscosity, thermal conductivity, Hall currents, Joule heat and viscous dissipation are taken into consideration. The problem is modulated mathematically by a system of non-linear partial deferential equations which describe the fluid velocity, temperature and nanoparticles concentration distributions. This system is simplified by considering long wavelength of the peristaltic wave and low Reynolds number. It is solved by using the multi-step deferential transform method to obtain the velocity, temperature and nanoparticles concentration distributions, pressure rise and pressure gradient. These solutions are obtained as functions of the physical parameters of the problem. Tables and figures are discussed to see the effects of these parameters. It is found that the thermal conductivity parameter causes an increase in the pressure gradient, meanwhile it reduces the pressure rise. Furthermore, it is noticed that the behavior of Brownian and thermophoresis parameters on nanoparticles concentration field are quite reverse.

Résumé :
The dynamics of non-Newtonian Jeffrey fluid in conjunction with a spinning disk surface can be problematic in heating systems, polymer technology, microelectronics, advanced technology, and substantive disciplines. Therefore, the significance of the Hall current and Coriolis forces in terms of the dynamics of Jeffrey fluid flowing across a gyrating disk subject to non-Fourier heat flux was investigated in this study. A temperature-related heat source (TRHS) and exponential-related heat source (ERHS) were incorporated into the model to improve the thermal characteristics. Thermal radiation and multiple slip effects were employed in the flow system. The connected non-linear PDEs governing the transport were transmuted into non-linear ODEs and solved using the Runge–Kutta shooting technique (RKST). The results of the RKST were substantiated in previous studies and found to have adequate reliability. The numerical values of the coefficient of friction and the Nusselt number were simulated. The non-Fourier heat flux was found to have a higher rate of heat transfer (HTR) than with traditional Fourier heat flux. Furthermore, both TRHS and ERHS phenomena support the progression of HTR. The swelling effects of the Hall current influence the velocities, whilst the temperature of the Jeffrey fluid shows the opposite tendency. Furthermore, asymptotic variances were detected for larger Hall parameter values.

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to theoretically study the problem of the peristaltic flow of Jeffrey fluid in a non-uniform rectangular duct under the effects of Hall and ion slip. An incompressible and magnetohydrodynamics fluid is also taken into account. The governing equations are modelled under the constraints of low Reynolds number and long wave length. Recent development in biomedical engineering has enabled the use of the periastic flow in modern drug delivery systems with great utility. Design/methodology/approach – Numerical integration is used to analyse the novel features of volumetric flow rate, average volume flow rate, instantaneous flux and the pressure gradient. The impact of physical parameters is depicted with the help of graphs. The trapping phenomenon is presented through stream lines. Findings – The results of Newtonian fluid model can be obtained by taking out the effects of Jeffrey parameter from this model. No-slip case is a special case of the present work. The results obtained for the flow of Jeffrey fluid reveal many interesting behaviours that warrant further study on the non-Newtonian fluid phenomena, especially the shear-thinning phenomena. Shear-thinning reduces the wall shear stress. Originality/value – The results of this paper are new and original.

Little Jeffrey places one block on top of two others as he busily constructs an elaborate block city. Although he is only two-and-one-half years old. Jeffrey understands that he has just made a “bigger” building by adding one block to two others. He understands this idea even though he does not yet know how to use the terms one. two, and three. But, by acting on his environment. Jeffrey is encountering the basic ideas that will gradually evolve into more sophisticated mathematics concepts. Only after repeated experiences of this type can Jeffrey develop the logical thinking skills necessary to express in words what has happened to his block structure.

Résumé :
In this study of the temporal stability of Jeffery–Hamel flow, the critical Reynolds number based on the volume flux, Rc, and that based on the axial velocity, Rec, are computed. It is found that both critical Reynolds numbers decrease very rapidly when the half-angle of the channel, α, increases, such that the quantity αRc remains very nearly constant and αRecis a nearly linear function of α. For a short channel there can be more than one value of the critical Reynolds number. A fully nonlinear analysis, for Re close to the critical value, indicates that the loss of stability is supercritical. The resulting asymmetric oscillatory solutions show staggered arrays of vortices positioned along the channel.

Résumé :
On October 3, 1807, Thomas Jefferson was contacted by an unknown traveler from the American frontier, who urgently requested a private “interview” with the President, promising to disclose “a matter of momentous importance”. By the next day, Jefferson held in his hands two astonishing manuscripts whose history has been lost for over two centuries. Authored by Muslims fleeing captivity in rural Kentucky, these documents delivered to the President in 1807 were penned by literate African slaves, and written entirely in Arabic. Jefferson’s Muslim Fugitives reveals the untold story of two escaped West Africans in the American heartland whose Arabic writings reached a sitting U.S. President, prompting him to intervene on their behalf. Recounting a quest for emancipation that crosses borders of race, region and religion, Jeffrey Einboden unearths Arabic manuscripts that circulated among Jefferson and his prominent peers, including a document from 1780s Georgia identified as the earliest surviving example of Muslim slave authorship in the newly-formed United States. Revealing Jefferson’s lifelong entanglements with Islam and captivity, Jefferson’s Muslim Fugitives tracks the ascent of Arabic slave writings to the highest halls of U.S. power, while questioning why such vital legacies from the American past have been entirely forgotten.

Résumé :
In Agents of God, sociologist Jeffrey Guhin describes his year and a half spent in two Sunni Muslim and two Evangelical Christian high schools in the New York City area. At first, these four schools could not seem more different, yet they are linked by much: these are all schools with conservative thoughts on gender and sexuality, with a hostility to the theory of evolution, and with a deep suspicion of secularism. And they are all also hopeful that America will be a place where their children can excel, even as they also fear the nation’s many temptations might lead their children astray. Guhin shows how these school communities use boundaries of politics, gender, and sexuality to distinguish themselves from the outside world, both in school and online. Within these boundaries, these communities have developed “external authorities” like Science, Scripture, and Prayer, each of which is felt and experienced as a real power with the ability to make commands and coerce action. For example, people can describe Science itself as showing something or the Bible itself as making a command. By offloading coercion to these external authorities, leaders in these schools are able to maintain a commitment to religious freedom while simultaneously reproducing their moral commitments in their students. Drawing on extensive classroom observation, community participation, and interviews with students, teachers, and staff, this book makes an original contribution to religious studies, sociology, and education.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Drawing connections between Freudian psychoanalysis, Virginia Woolf’s criticism and fiction, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, The Ethics of Immediacy recounts the far-reaching consequences of the modern turn towards a new ethics of immediacy. During the first half of the 20th century, a profound transformation – an existential revolution – took place in European culture in how human beings conceived of themselves. Inspired by Freud’s psychoanalysis, a newfound appreciation for the realm of immediate experience in human life emerged. With Freud himself making a signal contribution to this existential revolution, and with Woolf and Merleau-Ponty taking up Freud’s ideas in their own unique ways, all three figures began to regard first-order, spontaneous, direct, unselfconscious, concrete experience of self and world as standing at the heart of what it means to be human. Jeffrey McCurry describes how this new state of affairs stood in contrast to how immediate experience had been historically dismissed, devalued, repressed, and even negated in the fields of psychology, literature, and philosophy. This experience posed dangers to psychological stability, social order, and philosophical certainty. McCurry examines how Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, Woolf’s modernist criticism and fiction, and Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, psychology, literature, and philosophy in turns embraced the risks and dangers of putting immediate experience as the center of humanity, of respecting, understanding, appreciating, and following the lead of immediate, spontaneous, pre-reflective, pre-evaluative, concrete experience in human life.

Résumé :
Jeffery Long, a Hindu theologian, explores the problem of evil as it is raised and addressed by thinkers in the Ramakrishna Vedanta tradition of Hinduism and by two separate schools of thought from contemporary Christianity. The textual sources used from the Ramakrishna tradition consist of the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna as found in the primary sources on his life, as well as the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. From Christianity, Long employs works of John Hick and David Ray Griffin on the topic of theodicy. Despite the fact that the latter two authors hail from the same religious tradition, Long shows that Hick and Ramakrishna are in closer agreement on this topic than either is with Griffin’s process theology. The essay offers a revised version of the Ramakrishna-Hick theodicy that takes Griffin’s objections into account.

This chapter examines works on American Jewry written during the 1950s and 1960s that begin with the contrast between the pessimistic evaluations of the state of American Judaism at the end of the nineteenth century. It notes the starker contrast made between the state of American Orthodox Jewry at the time of the Second World War and at the start of the twenty-first century. It also considers Jeffrey Gurock's detailed analysis that demonstrates the first half of the twentieth century as the era of non-observance for American Orthodoxy. The chapter recounts how English-speaking Orthodox rabbinate had suffered somewhat of a reversal and was forced to take stock of its future by the 1940s. It points out the most traditional and Jewishly educated members of east European Orthodox Jewry and rabbinic intellectual elite that were most resistant to migration to the United States.

Résumé :
For more than a century Gournia has been one of the key sites for understanding Minoan urbanism. Excavations by Harriet Boyd Hawes (1901–4), Jeffrey Soles and Costis Davaras (1971, 1972, and 1979), an intensive archaeology survey by Costis Davaras and L. Vance Watrous (1992–4), cleaning operations by Watrous near the shore (2008 and 2009), and the current Gournia Excavation Project (hereafter GEP) also directed by Watrous (2010–present) have resulted in one of the most extensively explored Bronze Age towns in the Eastern Mediterranean (Hall 1912; Boyd Hawes et al. 1908; Watrous et al. 2012; Watrous et al. 2015). By the end of the Neopalatial period the excavated section of the town covered some 1.68 ha, consisting of a number of interdependent components, including approximately sixty-four houses, a small palace, harbour facilities, a 500 m2 plateia, and a cobblestone street system with a total length of more than half a kilometre (Gomrée 2013: 850). When we began our work with the GEP we assumed that we would simply add the new excavations to the existing plan by Boyd. However, we quickly discovered it was not possible to make the old plan fit with our new survey points. Moreover as we looked more closely at the old plan we discovered a number of other problems. We noticed that walls, rooms, and even entire buildings had been omitted. In addition, the straight lines of the earlier plan had the effect of regularizing the architecture and masked the chronological complexity of the site. We decided, therefore, to make a new GIS-based plan of the entire site. When combined with excavation data, our new architectural analysis provides a rich dataset, which is useful for both interisland and cross-cultural comparisons of urban development and change. This dataset also provides us with the opportunity to examine how the various components of the town interacted from the time of its foundation in the Early Minoan period through to its final use in the Late Minoan III period.

Résumé :
Abstract The Bayesian point-null testing problem is studied asymptotically under a high-dimensional normal means model. Associated procedures are intended for application in finite dimensional settings, but their behavior is studied as the dimensionality grows arbitrarily. Thus, ‘high-dimensionality’ is formulated as an asymptotic concept, and interest is in the behavior of the procedures ‘in the limit’. The approach is to allow the prior null probability to vary with dimension and with prior dispersion parameters, and to guide its parameterization so that the posterior null probability behaves in accordance with Bayesian consistency concepts. Among issues studied are the objectivity of setting the prior null probability to one-half, the Jeffreys–Lindley paradox, and the influence of smoothness constraints. Relevance to applications in functional data analysis and goodness-of-fit testing is also discussed.

Résumé :
This chapter opens the third part of Blood on the Lens: Trauma and Anxiety in American Found Footage Horror Cinema and focuses on how the subgenre has engaged with emerging anxieties around internet-based communication. This chapter begins by outlining the tradition of Jeffrey Sconce’s (2000) concept of haunted media, before addressing the connection between found footage horror and the internet that has been apparent since the unprecedented marketing campaign of The Blair Witch Project (Myrick and Sanchez, 1999), but argues that there is a critical need to move forward from scholarly focus on this to address the myriad ways found footage horror marketing has utilised the internet in subsequent years. This chapter proposes that although different methods have been used as the internet has matured, the central aim that remains is an attempt to infiltrate the audience’s reality. The second half of this chapter moves to discuss the ways that the internet is increasingly used as a mediator of death, with close attention given to real death sites, death memorialisation online, and how livestreaming and similar movements have brought death closer to audiences than ever before.
