Abstract Marking the eightieth anniversary of the founding of the celebrated series of patristic texts, Sources chrétiennes, the article considers the place and role of the series in the patristic renewal that occurred in the Roman Catholic Church in the twentieth century, and the many connections and resonances between that renewal and the patristic renewal that occurred contemporaneously in the Orthodox Church. Key writings of pioneers of that renewal on the respective sides, especially Henri de Lubac, Jean Daniélou, and Georges Florovsky, are studied, and the article ends with some reflections on the significance of the patristic heritage for current Roman Catholic-Orthodox theological dialogue.

Résumé :
Abstract: Jean Baudrillard is one among many prominent thinkers of postmodernism. One among many his notable idea is the Hyperreal In his book Simulacra and Simulation, Baudrillard’s proposes the idea of something that transcend beyond the state of fake and reality, the Hyperreal. This concept can be found as a theme in lyrics of a song titled Idol by Yoasobi. This paper try to dissect the lyrics and finding the implication of Baudrillard’s concept of Hyperreal within the implicit and explicit meanings of the lyrics. Idol is a certain profession that has gain significant rise in the 21th century. The common perception is that they are selling ‘fake identities’ to their audience. Nevertheless, the truth is more complicated than it is as with using Baudrillard’s theoretical framework of the Hyperreal, idol has cross the boundary between falsehood and authenticity and become ‘real’ in their own sense.
Jean Senebier: A Critical Exploration of Geneva’s Antiquities – This manuscript presents an in-depth analysis of Jean Senebier’s seminal work on the antiquities of Geneva. Senebier, a notable figure in the late 18th century, initiated a year-long scholarly discourse with his Essay on Geneva, first introduced in the Geneva Journal in 1788 and continuing through mid-1791. This study examines multiple manuscript versions of Senebier’s essay, preserved in the Biblioth\`{e}que de Gen\`{e}ve, and includes a meticulously transcribed annex of the original program. Senebier’s exploration offers a multifaceted perspective on Geneva’s historical artifacts, encompassing an array of elements from architectural structures to medieval fortifications. His methodological approach, grounded in extensive research of books and manuscripts, involved rigorous comparative analysis and consultations with contemporary scholars. Senebier’s work, distinguished by his critical evaluation and incorporation of iconography, also involved direct on-site explorations. Although following Jean de la Corbi\`{e}re, recognized as Geneva’s first proto-archaeologist, Senebier’s distinctive critical methodology aligns him closely with both historians and proto-archaeologists of his time in Geneva. This manuscript underscores Senebier’s significant contribution to the historiography and archaeology of Geneva’s antiquities.

In spite of the vast diffusion of his production, little is known about Eusebius of Alexandria. Three Greek codices do compile his collection alongside three texts displaying more biographical details, but their counterfactual recollection of events quickly led historians to view them as fictional. Although it is signed by a man, John, asserting he was Eusebius’s notary, this biography turns the enigmatic writer into Cyril’s successor, colliding thus with the many historical sources that remembered Dioscorus, the so-called Heresiarch, as Cyril’s actual successor. No matter how fictional this biography can appear, it is clear that it tried to erase out a troubled period of time. If one wants to understand who Eusebius really was, one should then first start to consider John, the alleged writer of an impossible tale. This essay contains therefore a new critical edition of the three biographical texts, with a French translation and a commentary aiming at figuring out who wrote them, when, why and how

Abstract This thesis focuses on the use of the Victorian elements as symbols in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea and discusses contemporary women’s suffering of colonialism, imperialism and men’s patriarchy. After reading Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece Jane Eyre, Rhys thinks there must be an unknown secret which entangles the main protagonists. Being also a Creole, Rhys thus decides to give a voice to the Creole lunatic in the story. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Rhys applies extensive symbolic skills to the story and displays the complicated inner emotions of the protagonists. She also puts the Victorian values in use to portray the features of the contemporary society and its profound influence on the protagonists. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One emphasizes the importance of realizing the symbolic skills when appreciating literary works. In this chapter, an overview of the theories of symbolism is presented. Through the concepts of various literary theorists, critical analysts and writers, we can readily understand the crucial role of symbolism. Moreover, the characteristics of the Victorian period and the classification of the settings in the novel are also mentioned in this chapter. The second chapter aims to examine the symbols of the natural settings, including animals, plants and landscape settings. Rhys exquisitely describes the natural settings and provides the readers with special symbolic meanings to reflect the colonial intrusion on the female protagonists and to express their doomed and unescapable destinies. In the third chapter, manufactured settings which comprise the convent, England and the names of the locations in the West Indies as symbols are explored. Rhys uses manufactured settings to expound the phenomenon of Victorian men’s oppression of women. The males were influenced greatly by the climate of society and by repressing the opposite sex, the men could extend their national belief—colonialism. Chapter Four discusses the symbolic meanings of time as settings. We take the Victorian Period as the background to make a study of people’s values and the effects of the Emancipation Act. Also, the female protagonist Antoinette walks between day and night, dream and reality and every incident she experiences makes her and other protagonists trapped in a loveless and miserable life. Therefore, Rhys has used several settings as symbols to foreshadow the ending of the story. The conclusion is made in the fifth chapter. Through the analysis of the symbolic meanings of the natural settings, manufactured settings and time as settings, we can not only understand the messages that Jean Rhys attempts to express but capture the essence of Wide Sargasso Sea more.

At the beginning of World War 2, Pamela, Neil, and her mother Amy moved to Laleham, a village on the Thames. Shortly thereafter, Neil joined the Army and was posted to India; and on New Year’s Day 1941 Pamela gave birth to her son Andrew Morven. While coping with rationing, the sound of bombers overhead, and the red sky of London in the Blitz, she continued to write. Her novel Winter Quarters deals with the temporary settlement of an artillery battalion in a quiet English village and is notable for her deft handling of male characters. In 1941 she reviewed enthusiastically the first of C.P. Snow’s Strangers and Brothers novels and they began exchanging letters and to meet for lunch in London. In May 1944 Pamela gave birth to her daughter Lindsay Jean.

Résumé :
The debate over religion in public schools in the United States since the 1960s has pitted two forces of democracy celebrated in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s The Social Contract against each other. The Supreme Court’s exclusion of sectarian prayer and Bible reading reflected democracy’s commitment to respect the rights of all. The politically engaged response of evangelical and conservative Christians has drawn upon democracy’s need for robust participation by ordinary citizens. While Rousseau believed that only an agreement upon a civil religion could reconcile these democratic forces, the results of a required world religions course in Modesto, California, suggests otherwise. The course enhanced students’ respect for religious liberty while allowing them to maintain their sectarian beliefs. Modesto’s course did not resolve all the dilemmas of democracy, however. The aversion to open-ended class discussions neglects the value of democratic deliberation that notable democratic theorists like Jurgen Habermas and Amy Gutmann celebrate.

Résumé :
The three waves of feminism are explored through the lives of the women who made history in bringing women’s issues to the forefront of American society. Many early feminists supported not only women’s rights, but also rights of slaves and contributed to the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment, granting emancipation to slaves. They continued to work towards women’s suffrage and were hopeful the Fourteenth Amendment would provide universal suffrage. However, women were not granted suffrage until the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment, nearly fifty years later. It was women’s fundamental need for independence and an identity of their own, separate from that of men, which thrust the women’s movement forward and continues to propel it today. Many notable women, such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Billie Jean King, Betty Friedan, Helen Gurley Brown, Jane Fonda, and Sandra Day O’Connor, are included in this history of the women’s movement in America. The biographical entries cite works for further reading, and the volume closes with a bibliography. The Shapers of the Great Debate series takes a biographical approach to history, following the premise that people make history in the circumstances in which they find themselves. Each volume in this series examines the lives and experiences of the individuals involved in a particular debate through both major and minor biographies.

Résumé :
This introduction to media literacy from a Christian perspective provides the tools to find and assess the beneficial―or harmful―ideologies depicted in notable films, programs, and trends. Television and movies shape popular culture, with audiences often unaware of how media messages influence the way they think, act, and view the world. In this enlightening guide, author Jen Letherer interprets film and television shows from a Christian standpoint, revealing how beliefs and values portrayed on the big and small screens often impact the moral conduct of daily viewers. This book provides the tools for Christians to discern the implicit and explicit messages found within this medium, and shows how motion pictures can improve or erode religious principles and a spiritual way of life. In a conversational tone, the work combines classic film theory, an assessment of story structure, and faith-based film criticism to delve into meaning and interpretations of popular movies and shows. Highlighted television programs include Top Chef, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, and The Walking Dead. The book also features films like Citizen Kane, Thelma and Louise, Star Wars, Inception, and The Hunger Games. This fascinating critique prompts media consumers to analyze the messages that their favorite broadcast programs send, consider if those messages are in line with their own values, and align their viewing choices with their personal beliefs.

The Haitian elections of 2010–11 were unusually marked by interventions from high-octane pop stars. Not only did Sweet Micky pose his candidature, but so too did Grammy-award winning artist Wyclef Jean. When the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) dismissed Wyclef from the presidential race, the artist hotly contested the CEP’s decision and quickly released an excoriating critique in song. This chapter offers an evaluation of Wyclef’s musical deeds and post-earthquake interventions as a celebrity and as the almost-candidate who saw himself as the best representation for the nation’s youth. This focus on a notable musical individual is then contrasted against the music-making of the crowd, with an aim toward understanding how songs that get people moving and engaged often emerge out of crowd-sourced improvisation. Resignification of song texts and melodies lies at the core of the deep intertextual play that musicians and music listeners share as they decode political acts.

Résumé :
Encyclopedias and dictionaries are the workhorses of culture; almost everyone consults them from time to time, but almost no one studies them. These useful compendia of knowledge serve their purpose for a few years and then are shelved or pulped. There are some notable exceptions to this rule, works whose significance transcends the time in which they appear. The most famous example of these is the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné of Diderot and d’Alembert. Denis Diderot (1713 – 1784) was one of the most prolific critics and essayists of the philosophes and a star of the French Enlightenment. His friend Jean Le Rond d’Alembert (1717 – 1783) was a mathematician, astronomer, and science writer. Together, they organized and edited the most ambitious work of their age. They planned it to be a universal compendium of all knowledge, organized in a coherent manner for the edification and enlightenment of the educated reading public. At the same time, they wanted it to be useful, practical, modern, and up-to-date. Despite its steep price, it enjoyed a huge popular success and became one of the best-selling works of the century. Yet it left a poor legacy. Its sequel, the Encyclopédie méthodique, was a commercial and scientific failure that few people bought at the time and hardly anyone has looked at since. Today, intellectuals pay lip service to the original Encyclopédie, but no one goes out and buys a new edition. Contrast this fate with that of two other encyclopedias that appeared a few years after Diderot and d’Alembert’s: the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Brockhaus. The first edition of the Britannica, which appeared in 1771, was a modest work, hastily put together by a printer, an engraver, and a penurious scribbler. The German Conversations-Lexicon was the creation of the publishing entrepreneur Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772–1823), who bought up an unfinished encyclopedia, hired writers to complete it, and issued the first edition in 1809 – 1811. These were no masterpieces of erudition or compendia of all knowledge, but simple reference works.

« Marin Karmitz is a phenomenon : one of the most prolic French producers of his generation. Alongside his production activities, he has also set up MK2, a successful distribution, exhibition, and sales company. Louis Malle, Alain Resnais, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard—he has worked with them all. Karmitz has also branched further aeld, producing movies by Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami, by great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, and by American auteur Gus Van Sant. Notable lms on the producer’s lmography include the Three Colors trilogy with Kieslowski (1993 to 1994), Chabrol’s version of Madame Bovary (1991), Resnais’ Mélo (1986), Kiarostami’s The Wind Will Carry Us (1999), and Jonathan Nossiter’s Signs & ; Wonders (2000). He also co-produced Van Sant’s Paranoid Park (2007). He was associate producer on Godard’s Every Man for Himself (1980), and his company produced Malle’s classic, Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987). There are several paradoxes about Karmitz. He is a gure of the 1960s, a radical leftist who fell foul of the lmmaking establishment in the turbulent post-1968 years. His directorial career was stopped in its tracks in the early 1970s and he was blacklisted. At the same time, this idealistic lmmaker with close links to the revolutionary movement proved to be an astute cinema owner and businessman. To outsiders, his lmmaking model seems akin to that of the Hollywood studios. His company is vertically integrated, handling everything from production to exhibition. He suggests his business is more in the tradition of the Lumière brothers. There is, of course, one very big difference between Karmitz and the Hollywood majors. Karmitz only produces lms by auteurs. Karmitz is nothing if not international in outlook. He came to France as a refugee. Born in 1938, Karmitz spent his early years in Romania. Once established as a producer, he has worked with lmmakers all over the world, but that leads to another surprising fact about him. He doesn’t much like to travel. His passport, he says, is the cinema. » Dans FilmCraft : Producing, 73–74. Routledge, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9780240823881-25.

Résumé :
Jean Gebser, a prominent German-Swiss philosopher, introduces a transformative framework that aims to elucidatehuman consciousness and cultural structure, laying the foundation for a new approach to interpreting the developmentof architecture. This paper delves into the intersection of Gebser’s theory and modern architecture, with a particularfocus on the emergence and advancement of the “aperspectival” spatial concept in the work of German architect HansScharoun as an illustrative example.Challenging the prevailing linear understanding of time and space, Gebser’s The Ever-present Origin offers insights intothe forms and mutations of human consciousness from its primordial beginning to the “present,” positing that humanityevolves through different modes of consciousness, with each mode building upon and transcending the previous one.Gebser believes that because a key aspect of understanding human perception of time and space is the notion of perspective, the discovery and application of perspective indicate people’s consequent awareness of space. Therefore, based on the absence or presence of perspective, Gebser recognizes three “epochs” in human history, “unperspectival,” “perspectival,” and “aperspectival,” which correspond to the era from the inception of human civilization to the Renaissance, from the Renaissance to the early 20th century, and from the twentiethcentury onward, respectively.Gebser’s philosophy thus provides a new framework for us to understand architecture. Borrowing Gebser’s analysis ofthe “aperspectival” consciousness, this paper shows that the development of modern architecture during the earlydecades of the twentieth century embraced a new spatial language that was aimed to reconcile the fragmentation ofmodern life and form a harmonious wholeness, resonating with the evolving human awareness of “integrity.” The workof notable architects, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, and particularly Hans Scharoun, emphasized theinterpenetration of spaces, the blurring of inside-outside boundaries, and the liberation from the linear perspectival spatial construction. The paper thus explores the profound affinity between Gebser’s concept and Scharoun’s architecture, demonstrating that in his theater and concert hall projects, Scharoun challenged both the linear perspective tradition and linear progression of time. Through a close reading of Scharoun’s spatial creation, this paper argues that the architect experimented with new spatial concepts such as “simultaneity” and “aperspectivity” and designed structures that not only accommodated the changing needs of individuals, programs, and society but also promoted a holistic and integral consciousness.

Résumé :
In widely used metocean terminology, solitons are large amplitude, often highly nonlinear, internal waves. They are responsible for complex vertical profiles of rapidly varying ocean currents. These current profiles need to be reliably quantified for a wide range of offshore engineering applications, often with very limited suitable data. Some recent advances in this field of applied research were described at OMAE2017 by Jeans et al (2017) [1]. Vertical displacements, derived from temperature measurements, were the primary input for soliton quantification. Associated current speeds were estimated from relevant theory and validated using available measured current data. This represents a notable development, because soliton current profiles are traditionally quantified via direct measurements of velocity. However, reliable current measurements can be a challenge, so the new approach is considered more reliable in some circumstances. Jeans et al (2017) [1] applied one simple and elegant theory for relating vertical displacement to velocity. This theory performed well, considering its limitations. This paper further evaluates different theoretical options, using a new dataset with much larger amplitude solitons. Theories with higher order nonlinearity are required for estimation of soliton current profiles in such challenging conditions.
