Résumé :
Javanese is an Indonesian culture which needs to be preserved, but many Javanese students make mistakes in the pronunciation of Javanese letters and find it difficult to analyze errors by human teachers because of the limited time and subjective assessment, so a system is needed to detect incorrect pronunciation of Javanese letters. Mispronunciation detection system has been widely applied in foreign languages, but the system has not been implemented for Javanese carakan letters. This research develops the Javanese letters mispronunciation detection system using Back-Propagation Artificial Neural Networks (BP-ANN). The dataset is obtained from the recorded pronunciation of hanacaraka texts by 24 speakers with 5 repetitions. ALNS method then used to automatically segment the signal into syllables. ANN-PB use statistical value of Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) method with 7 and 14 coefficients. 10-Fold Cross Validation is used to validate and test the system. The Javanese mispronunciation detection using 7MFCC coefficients produces the highest accuracy of 80,07%. While the Javanese mispronunciation detection using 14 MFCC coefficients produces an accuracy of 82.36% at the highest.

Résumé :
A more established tradition may set an indirect consensus for thecommunication between rulers in any situation. This article identifies howdiplomatic correspondence was conducted and how different perceptions could actually be negotiated to attain certain goals. Two diplomatic letters – one from the Panembahan of Sumenep and one from the Sultanof Yogyakarta dispatched to Thomas Stamford Raffles to address Raffles’retirement during the British interregnum in Java from 1811 to 1816 –were analyzed. These letters were chosen due to the different scripts and languages used in the two letters: Classical Malay Jawi and Old Javanese'aksara Jawa'. By applying content analysis, this study finds that the Malay language was not only influential throughout the Indonesian archipelagoas a medium for verbal communication, but its letter-writing tradition even clearly affected its Javanese counterpart, setting a standard writing style for diplomatic letters.

Résumé :
The Javanese writing is one of the privileges possessed by Malaysians in general and Muslims in particular, because the Javanese writing is a complete reflection of the Arabic language, as it is similar in writing and letters despite the difference in terms of reading the Arabic language, a language that symbolizes Islamic identity. However, the situation of Javanese writing is increasingly challenged with the introduction of a new writing system based on the Latin script and making people use and prefer it from Javanese script. This leads to a point of concern regarding the mastery of Javanese writing in future generations and their knowledge of reading letters and writings inspired by Arabic letters. Therefore, this study aims to study the history of Javanese writing and to highlight the extent to which this writing serves as a tool for Islamic knowledge in Malaysia. The research concluded that there is a strong relationship between Javanese writing in the process of Islamic knowledge and language through its contributions to the dissemination of religious sciences to the Malaysian Muslim community and the existence of efforts made by various groups in preserving Javanese writing.

Résumé :
Purpose: The Javanese script generally has a basic script or is commonly referred to as the “carakan” script. The script consists of 20 letters with different levels of difficulty. Some letters have similarities, so research is needed to make it easier to detect the image of Javanese characters. Methods: This study proposes recognizing Hiragana's writing characters using the K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) method. In the preprocessing stage, the segmentation process is carried out using the thresholding method to perform segmentation, followed by the Histogram of Gradient (HOG) feature extraction process and noise removal using median filtering. Histogram of Gradient (HoG) is one of the features used in computer vision and image processing in detecting an object in the form of a descriptor feature. There are 1000 data divided into 20 classes. Each class represents one letter of the basic Javanese script. Result: Based on data collection using the writings of 50 respondents where each respondent writes 20 basic Javanese characters, the highest accuracy was obtained at K = 1, namely 98.5%. Novelty: Using several preprocessing such as cropping, median filtering, otsu thresholding and HOG feature extraction before do classification, this experiment yields a good accuracy.

Résumé :
Indonesia is a country that is rich in cultural diversity. An example of one such variety is the Javanese language. The letters that are usually used in Javanese are non-Latin letters or are usually known as Javanese script. However, along with advances in technology, the Javanese language is increasingly being forgotten. In the past, the Javanese script was used as a subject in schools, aiming for Indonesian students to continue to gain knowledge about the Javanese script. The initial step in the introduction of the Javanese script starts with the preprocessing process by changing the image of the Javanese script from the RGB image to a grayscale image which is then performed feature extraction, where the feature extraction used in this script recognition is texture extraction with the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) algorithm. The results of this processing are obtained information that can be used as a parameter in the Multi Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification to predict Javanese script images. In this study using the LBP method with the Multi SVM Algorithm as a classification algorithm produces a high accuracy of 90% in the recognition of Javanese script, better than using only Multi SVM with an accuracy of 80%.

This article aims to reveal the discourse on the resistance of two Javanese ulama who were victims of the Dutch colonial politics of exile in the 19th Century. This study uses several letter manuscripts written by Kiai Ahmad Arrifai Kalisalak and Kiai Hasan Maolani Kuningan from their exile as primary sources. The letters addressed to his family and followers in Java were written in Javanese with the Pegon script. Through historical studies and discourse analysis, this study finds that the Dutch colonial politics of exile was not able to dampen the resistance of the ulama. The writing of letters from exile by Kiai Ahmad Arrifai Kalisalak and Kiai Hasan Maolani was intended to compete with the colonial powers, producing heretical discourses and disturbing public order as a pretext to banish them. Thus, this article concludes that the two ulama did from their exile was a new mode of resistance against colonialism.

Résumé :
Borrowing script happens throughout history of languages. Long before we know Latin script, Javanese has already adopted Arabic script. However, Java language deals with problematic adaptation due to distinctive sound system among those two languages, Arabic and Java. For that matter, this research aims to uncover 1) how Arabic-Java orthography represents Javanese’s consonants and vowel, and 2) how Arabic-Java orthography represents Javanese’s cluster. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. Data contain with the Javanese words which is written in Arabic script. Data are gained from eight different books which are inscribed by Arabic-Java orthography. After data are collected, the orthography method and grapheme-phoneme correspondence are used to analyze them. Grapheme-phoneme correspondence used to know how Arabic-Java orthography represents consonants and vocal phonemes. Finally, this research found that Arabic-Java orthography has 28 graphemes which are used to represent 23 consonants. Modification letters and digraph are used to represent missing sound in Arabic. Six Javanese vocals are represented with 9 graphemes. In another hand, cluster is written in two ways, first by adding Anaptyxis schwa [ə] in between sonorant-sonorant or obstruent-sonorant and vowel [a] in initial cluster nasal consonant and plosive consonant.

The difficulty of non-Javanese students learning Arabic and Islam using the Pegon method is a research topic that has yet to receive much attention from academics. This article aims to analyze the difficulties of non-Javanese students in the Pegon Method. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results of this study indicate that the difficulties of non-Javanese students are caused by the Javanese language used in the Pegon method. Furthermore, the Arabic or Hijaiyah letters used to write Pegon Javanese are slightly different from the original Arabic, and the scientific foundation of Arabic for students needs to be improved. Preparatory class programs, peer tutoring, and literature translation using the Pegon script into Indonesian are some strategies for anticipating student difficulties.

Résumé :
<p class="0abstract">the rapid development of mobile technologies allows platform devices to perform sophisticated tasks, including character recognition. These identification systems are notable techniques that required high computation cost, in order to achieve acceptable accuracy resulting from diversity in alphabet shape and method of writing, especially for the non-Latin alphabet, e.g., Javanese letter. In addition, numerous studies have attempted to address these issues by employing a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) due to its ability to provide high accuracy in character detection. However, the performance on mobile devices is possibly faced with problems resulting from the limitation of computation resource on the platform that also affect computation cost. This study, therefore, proposes a 2-tier architecture by placing the mobile app as a client that invokes a Javanese letters classifier service, which is based on CNN, and implemented in the web-server through the Application Program Interface (API). The results show that the letter classification was successfully implemented in a mobile platform, with an accuracy rate of 86.68%, utilizing training for 50 epochs, and an average time of 1935 ms.</p>

Résumé :
The Javanese language and Javanese script are one of the rich cultural heritages in Indonesia, but there are still many people who do not have sufficient understanding of the Javanese language and culture, including the Javanese script. This can have an impact on the loss of language and cultural diversity, as well as the loss of the local identity of the Javanese people. The lack of knowledge about Javanese script language culture can be caused by various factors, such as the lack of access to adequate learning resources, the minimum use of Javanese language and script in daily life, and the lack of attention from the government and society towards the preservation of Javanese language and culture. This study aims to optimize the application of the YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithm and data augmentation techniques in the Javanese language classification Hanacaraka script. The method used in this study was collecting data on Javanese Hanacaraka script images, data labeling, data augmentation, and model training using the YOLO algorithm. The results showed that the Javanese script pattern recognition method used the YOLO algorithm which had gone through the data augmentation process, showing good results with an accuracy of 96.4% using 3021 image data sources for the hanacaraka letters.

The Sonobudoyo State Museum is one of the state museums in Yogyakarta where stores historical objects like the Javanese script. This Javanese script presents in street names, especially in the city of Yogyakarta to represent local content for elementary, middle, and high schools. To read and understand Javanese script, people must learn it within a specified period, whereas with Latin letters are easier and faster to understand. The purpose of this paper is to design and build a Javanese script classification dataset to attract both adults, children, and parents as effective learning media. We construct the dataset by using Deep Learning with the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Stages of making a dataset are input data, the process of building models, and training can then recognize Javanese script images. We collect the dataset from the internet and several different people to train computer machines. In this paper, we construct the Javanese script classification dataset to help users to detect Javanese characters. The results of this training the application of Javanese script classification can produce a certain level of recognition of Javanese script patterns in a real application.

Résumé :
Culture is system of idea and act as a result of human creation. A culture becomes history when their community leave it. A language, as part of culture, becomes dead when a speech community leave it. Preserving culture and language is important to keep our identity and civilization. This research shows how Javanese speech community keep their use of Javanese to maintain their culture in Northern Semarang as Javanese environment by taking the data from Junior Highschool students. The result shows that most of them still maintain Javanese, especially the lowest level of Javanese (Ngoko) to talk to their friend in casual situation. Few of them understand the highest level of Javanese (Krama) to honor the older. They are also able to write and read Javanese letters since it is taught as a school subject with local content. Javanese language and culture maintenance is supported by the local government to promote Semarang tourism industry to gain more benefit for the local people and the local government. Preserving culture by maintaining the language must be supported by the environment by using it in daily conversation and teaching it in school to make the young generation understand and use the language.

Résumé :
The Javanese language is one of the languages used by people in Indonesia. However, one issue arises when many people speak in Javanese while only a few people can read and write in the alphabet of the Javanese, which is called Aksara Jawa. This Aksara Jawa is mainly used to write Javanese. In its development, it is also used to write several other regional languages, such as Sundanese, Madurese, Sasak, and Malay, as well as historical languages, such as Sanskrit and Kawi. The Javanese script is a derivative of the Indian Brahmi script through the Kawi script and is closely related to the Balinese script. The Javanese script was actively used in Javanese literature and daily writing from the mid-15th century to the mid-20th century before being replaced by Latin letters. Nowadays, 21st century, the Aksara Jawa is learned by students at school as a local language lesson. Some schools provide it while the rest is not. A question comes out; do the Javanese generations (students) nowadays can write and read the Aksara Jawa? The result shows that in many elementary schools until junior high school, students cannot read and write in Aksara Jawa.

Résumé :
RA Kartini has always been associated with issues of education and emancipation of women. However, R.A. Kartini's letters to her friends apparently also discussed the cultural conditions and religious environment of the Javanese people at the end of the 19th century. How did the culture and religious environment of the end 19th century Javanese society cause Kartini to be critical of Islam? What is the contribution of R.A. Kartini against the development of Islam in Java? This research data uses the letters R.A. Kartini to her friends who have been summarized in books that have been published. Secondary data used are books and articles with similar themes. Various information relating to the topic of the problem is then analyzed to draw conclusions in accordance with the problems that have been raised. The results showed that R.A. Kartini had several times wanted to convert to a religion because of a foreign language that she could not understand in worship. Kartini wanted an effort to translate the Qur'an, so that she and the Javanese community could understand the teachings of her religion well.

Résumé :
Javanese Language is learnt and studied by many people throughout the world as it has a complex system of language covering the letters (Javanese Language Orthography), the politeness level, and also the history and the culture behind the language. However, there is a concern on Javanese Language shift by its young speakers because they tend to use Indonesian Language as Indonesia’s Official Language, English as the world’s international language, or another popular language in the world like Korean with its K-Pop phenomenon. Javanese Language maintenance is then needed to keep these young generation as the language users who will pass it to the next generation. One of the ways to do it is embracing their world so that the language is considered good and beneficial for them as the young generation. Since music and song is very close to the young generation as they are very up to date with the latest trend of it, the language maintenance can be done through exposing Javanese kinds of music and songs. Recently, a kind of Javanese music called Campursari along with its songs are gaining popularity with the fame of The Godfather of The Brokenheart, Didi Kempot, who creates thousands of Campursari songs full of love stories in the lyric, particularly the brokenheart storied. Out of nowhere, the young generation, who are Javanese, who are Javanese but do not understand Javanese Language or even who are not Javanese and not understand Javanese Language are joining the crowd and becoming his fans that previously filled with the old generation. This research shows how Junior Highschool Students maintain the Javanese Language usage by liking the music, singing the songs and understanding the Javanese Language in the lyric. This research also observes whether they still know or able to sing traditional Javanese songs they exposed from their family, environment (neighbourhood) or Javanese Language class at school that shows their Javanese Language maintenance. The Javanese people or more precisely the Javanese people, in cultural anthropology, are people who in their simple lives use the Javanese language with various dialects for generations. The Javanese people are those who live in the areas of Central Java and East Java, and they come from both regions. This dynamism is the belief that what they have built is the result of adaptation to struggle with nature. This Javanese culture is continuously maintained by the nobility and the nobility or Javanese intellectuals. The two cultures have their own characteristics. The peasant culture living in the countryside is a small tradition that is still dominated by the oral tradition, while the aristocratic culture has developed a tradition of writing by utilizing Hindu Buddhist religious literature. Java is Sufi Islam, namely Islam which is easily accepted and absorbed into Javanese syncreticism. And of course To me, the Sufi Islam that Peacpck meant was none other than Islam spread by walisogo figures. Islam is the source and values of shari'a law. Prior to Hinduism and Buddhism, prehistoric Javanese society had embraced beliefs that matched animism and dynamism. People's view of life is directed towards the formation of a numinous unity between the real world, society and the supernatural realm which is considered sacred. Hindu-Buddhist influences in Javanese society are expansive. alone had an effect on the religious system. Scholars who understood Sanskrit were finally able to process Hindu-Buddhist letters to write Javanese.

Résumé :
The original Javanese culture of the communities in Java has been running for decades, meaning that this culture has been very rich in elements of universal culture such as the system of social organization, knowledge, arts, religion, and language. Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace plays an essential role as the center and cultural resource owned by the city of Yogyakarta; one of the areas that are still famous for its cultural guardians, traditions, and behaviors of an ancestor. This research used qualitative methods to obtain data through literature reviews and interviews. Literature review and interview results then became analytical material and adapted to the existing frame of thought as a result of the library studies conducted at the beginning. Then after the analysis process was completed, the results were obtained. This research revealed that the Javanese culture in the people of Yogyakarta affected the political ideology because when speaking about Javanese culture, three aspects cannot be separated in the Javanese community, especially Yogyakarta, Javanese culture, Belief, and religion. A contest will always be syncretism, cannot be constantly intact on assimilation, and acculturation is even alienated (to be drawn). As long as the Javanese people still exist, the Javanese culture will remain alive and develop when the relics of letters, dialectics, and cultures still exist.

This study aims to analyze the words of the Pegon script contained in the Book of Fasholatan by Raden Asnawi Kudus with the perspective of one branch in modern linguistics, namely morphological studies. In this study, researchers used qualitative research methods based on literature research with content analysis of the contents of the Book of Fasholatan by Raden Asnawi Kudus. The results of this study found that there are several morphological characteristics of the word Pegon in Kitab Fasholatan, namely: First, that the morphological system of Pegon vocabulary is based on the morphological system of Javanese which divides types of words into 11 words. Secondly, in the morphological system of the word Pegon there are several vocabularies absorbed directly from Arabic. Third, in the morphological system of the Pegon script, there are Arabic loanwords that have undergone changes in form and changes in meaning, through various types of changes, namely: phonological changes, changes by adding letters at the beginning of words, in the middle or at the end of words, and changes by removing letters from a Pegon word. Fourth, in the morphological system of the Pegon script, various Javanese dialects including the Javanese dialects of Ngoko, Krama Madya, and Krama Inggil are also used in writing the vocabulary of the Pegon script.

Résumé :
Javanese script is one of the languages which are a typical Javanese culture. Javanese script is seen in its use in writing the name of a particular agency or location that has historical and tourism value. The use of Javanese script in public places makes the existence of this script seen by many people, not only by the Javanese people. Some of them have difficulty recognizing the Javanese characters they encounter. One method of pattern recognition and image processing is Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNN is a method that uses convolution operations in performing feature extraction on images as a basis for classification. The process consists of initial data processing, classification, and syllable formation. The classification consists of 48 classes covering Javanese script types, namely basic letters (Carakan) and voice-modifying scripts (Sandhangan). It is tested with multi-class confusion matrix scenarios to determine the accuracy, precision, and recall of the built CNN model. The CNN architecture consists of three convolution layers with max-pooling operations. The training configuration includes a learning rate of 0.0001, and the number of filters for each convolution layer is 32, 64, and 128 filters. The dropout value used is 0.5, and the number of neurons in the fully-connected layer is 1,024 neurons. The average performance value of accuracy reached 87.65%, the average precision value was 88.01%, and the average recall value was 87.70%.

I am not a specialist on Bali. I did live in Bali for more than a year in total over the past several decades, thus witnessing first hand its changing lifeways. I am a cultural and intellectual historian of Bali's neighbouring island of Java, and I carried out research on the central Javanese, specifically Solonese, shadow theatre in the early part of my career. I spent around five years in the city of Solo between 1972 and 1984, half of that time attending performances, and the other half hanging out with puppet masters, shadow theatre aficionados, and students of shadow theatre, and organising a project on collecting branch stories, stories that deviate from the trunk stories of the Solonese shadow theatre repertoire. The repertoire I was researching was the Javanese Mahabharata and Ramayana stories, a repertoire with which I was quite familiar. I was asked to be part of this special review to offer comparative insights between southern Balinese and central Javanese cultures from the point of view of the performing arts. From this perspective, I felt exhilarated to read Richard Fox's More than words and to read how literally alive Balinese letters, writ large and small, are in present-day Bali.

<p><em>Letters of a Javanese Princess is a translated literary work from a compilation of letters entitled Door Duisternis tot Licht (Out of Dark Comes Light). This work was written by Raden Adjeng Kartini and generally portrayed women's emancipation and education. As a root of women's education, tracing the history of the detailed concept of Indonesian education from this work means knowing the original concept of a good teacher and some teaching principles. Thus, Kartini’s teacher concept and principles were analysed in this article. Based on the analysis, the first finding shows that there are two teaching principles that Kartini has. The first is that teaching should include moral and intellectual aspects. According to Kartini, education does not only mean educating the brain but also having concern about morality and spirituality. The second is that the material of teaching should be suitable for the need of the era and students. The second finding shows that there are three points to be a good teacher: a teacher should get basic education for the profession, a teacher should be an excellent example for students, and a teacher should teach opened-mindedness, love, rights, and justice. Those important things are aimed to raise education for our nation.</em></p><p> </p>

Convolutional neural network (CNN) is state-of-the-art method in object recognition task. Specialized for spatial input data type, CNN has special convolutional and pooling layers which enable hierarchical feature learning from the input space. For offline handwritten character recognition problem such as classifying character in MNIST database, CNN shows better classification result than any other methods. By leveraging the advantages of CNN over character recognition task, in this paper we developed a software which utilizes digital image processing methods and CNN module for offline handwritten Javanese character recognition. The software performs image segmentation process using contour and Canny edge detection with OpenCV library over captured handwritten Javanese character image. CNN will classify the segmented image into 20 classes of Javanese letters. For evaluation purposes, we compared CNN to multilayer perceptron (MLP) on classification accuracy and training time. Experiment results show that CNN model testing accuracy outperforms MLP accuracy although CNN needs more training time than MLP.

The data of this research are in the form of deviations at the orthographic levels obtained from the data source, namely Instagram through the @dagelan_jowo account. Documentation techniques collected the data. The data obtained were analysed descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that orthographic deviations consisted of phonological spelling errors, errors in capital letters, foreign languages, punctuation marks, and errors in the use of numbers. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that there are still negative attitudes found by Javanese speakers towards their language, as evidenced by the many deviations of Javanese language in both formal and non-formal texts.

Résumé :
AbstractThis article deals with Malay letters and documents from the archives of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie—VOC), dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The collection of “golden” Malay letters, which belonged to the governor- general of the VOC in Java (1704–1709) Joan van Hoorn, made a long voyage on the ship Sandenburg from Batavia to Cape Town and Amsterdam in 1710. Its cultural and historical value was firstly estimated by the outstanding Russian scholar and antiquarian N. P. Likhachev, who purchased it for the Paleographical Museum in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) in 1910. The pages of the fifty-seven diplomatic letters cover one of the most controversial periods of VOC history on the Archipelago, 1683 to 1710, the establishment of its relationships with local nobility and states. The collection represents the original letters of the sultans of Palembang, Gowa, Buton, Bone, Tallo, Banten, and Cirebon, and of prominent historical figures of Malay states as well as the famous Indian merchant from Surat, Abdul Ghafur. They are written in Malay (in Arabic graphic: Jawi and Pegon), Arabic, Javanese (in two scripts: Pegon and Carakan), Dutch, Spanish, Persian, and Chinese. Their investigation will contribute to the academic scholarship on the famous records, reconstructing the history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on the Malay Archipelago, and on the peculiarities of Malay letter writing in different languages, scripts, and regions.

Résumé :
As Indonesia's most widely spoken local language, Javanese is rich in linguistic phenomena that need to be understood, especially by speakers, linguists, and academia. One of these linguistic phenomena is contraction. This study investigates various types and communicative functions of Javanese contractions commonly used in informal situations. By qualitatively analyzing the data collected from Javanese grammar and textbooks and researchers’ intuition as native speakers, this study found that Javanese has two types of contractions, i.e., internal (created by omission of internal letters and sounds) and external contraction (created by reducing the syllables of entire or partial each word). Most of these contractions were manifested through removing the first syllable, although other possibilities exist in much rarer cases. Aside from the intention of creating a more economical expression, this study discovered that contraction processes in Javanese could also be used to create humorous and euphemistic effects, maintain secrecy, and increase aesthetic effects.

Gender discrimination in Indonesia has existed since ancient times. As a Javanese woman, Kartini became a figure who experienced the past and even by her family. Due to her limitations, Kartini wrote about her restlessness and thoughts in the form of letters sent to her Dutch friends. The letters were then collected and put together into a book entitled Door Duisternis tot Licht. Pramoedya took some fragments of Kartini's letter, and tried to see Kartini in her literary glasses in the biographical novel Call Me Kartini Saja. Relying on qualitative methods and constructivist paradigms and using Vladimir Propp's narrative analysis, the purpose of this research is to reveal the description of the character's function in the narrative in the novel. The role analysis is only in narratives that contain elements of feminism. This research found that the novel P Call Me Kartini Saja contains seven of the 31 narrative functions and seven characters which are grouped into four character functions. Through the narrative function and character function that have been analyzed in this novel, this suggestion suggests that Kartini's spirit in fighting for emancipation through her writing and thoughts should always be lived out in her daily activities because her struggle allowed Indonesian women to indulge their rights.

Résumé :
The study presented in this article focuses on the signification of the poetic metres and the theory of rasa expounded in Candrakiraṇa, a guide to the composition of kakawin that is preserved in the scriptoriums of mountains. The use of the poetic metres and theory of rasa was examined in the text of Sītā’s letter to Rāma that was taken from the Rāmāyaṇa Kakawin. It was carried out on the three manuscripts of Candrakiraṇa preserved by the National Library of Indonesia (PNRI). The findings show that the use of śārdūlawikriḍita metre in Sītā’s letters results in a form of signification for particular aesthetic experiences (rasa), namely karuṇa (sympathy), bhayānaka (concern), śānta (peace) and śṛṅgara (love).
