Résumé :
Erica Simon26/2 1910 - 11/2 1993William Michelsen writes a personal obituary about the French Grundtvig scholar Erica Simon. He first met Erica Simon in the middle of the fifties, when she was studying the Swedish folk high schools and wanted to meet all the Grundtvig scholars and people who put Grundtvig’s ideas into practice. Erica Simon was a university professor in Scandinavian languages and literature, but she also founded her own folk high scholl west of Lyons. Erica Simon’s interest in Grundtvig and her commitment to the Grundtvig’s ideal of .the school for life. was aroused in the mid-fifties, when she studied at Uppsala and met the Swedish folk high scholl Hvilan in Sk.ne. Erica Simon worked together especially with the Nordic folk high school in Kung.lv, and she wanted to spread the knowledge of Grundtvig’s ideas, not only in France, but all over the world. Like Grundtvig, Erica Simon wanted to find the roots of folk culture behind the influence from the Roman Empire, an influence which underlies the centralized school system dating back to Napoleonic France. Erica Simon’s main subject in her Grundtvig research was his ideas of the connection between folk enlightenment and science or scholarship. Science and folk culture are different matters but have to interact in order to establish a scholarship built on folk culture. In accordance with Grundtvig, Erica Simon stresses medieval Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic literature as the Nordic element in universal history, establishing a vernacular culture in opposition to the Latin school and scholarship. Erica Simon was a passionate scholar and interpreter of Grundtvigian ideas. She often visited Denmark and was on the Committe of Grundtvig-Selskabet, where she gave lectures, and she published papers in the Grundtvig-Studier in 1969 and 1973.Erica Simon was born i Königsberg on February 26th, 1910. She spent her youth in Hannover and afterwards studied language and literature in Geneva and in Paris. She married in 1936 and became a widow in 1942, but remarried, bearing the name Vollboudt. Jacques Kleiner, her son from her first marriage, today lives in Switserland. From 1939-54 she was a secondary school teacher in France, but in 1954 she began studying the Nordic folk high school, doing research in Uppsala in 1955-56. In 1962 she became a doctor at the Sorbonne University in Paris (Doctorat d.tat in 1962), with a dissertation about the Swedish folk high schools in the late 18th century.

AbstractThis essay treats the inspiration and nature of Yves Simon's philosophical life. His embrace of that life was importantly shaped by his engagement with the republican tradition in France, his passionate opposition to the fascist threat to France, and his later attachment to the aspirations of American democracy. However, his early philosophical interests took direction and inspiration from his encounter with Jacques Maritain who drew him to Thomism. His devotion to the truth was fierce, and he confronted honestly the threats to this defining quality of philosophical life from the pressures of social conformity and from the discouragement of seeing the inadequacies and disagreements in the history of philosophy. He came, as especially evident in his most influential book, Philosophy of Democratic Government, to esteem highly the virtue of prudence, seeking to protect it from both philosophy and social science.

Someone, or something, is following Alice (Jane Randolph). In the famous scene from Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People (1942), Irena (Simone Simon), who is married to the man with whom Alice just went out, tails Alice as she walks home. While Irena appears to stop following her at one point, it is here that Alice notices she is being followed by something else. She sees and hears nothing, but somehow feels that something, invisible, unseen, is nevertheless in close proximity. Certainly a classic horror scene, Tourneur nevertheless takes here an unusual approach to scaring audiences. Instead of directly showing its horror element, Irena as a cat person, Cat People instead suggests its presence. The subtle way in which Tourneur films this horrific scene seems at odds with conventional definitions of the horror genre, frequently defined in scholarship by its depictions of excess. By reorienting our relation to the horror genre in this way, Tourneur creates a concept that forces us to rethink the genre’s parameters, aspects and definitions. This article argues that Tourneur’s films centre around a main concept, suggestion and that this conceptual creation makes him, in turn, a philosopher of horror who pushes our understandings of the genre into unconventional directions. Through a close analysis of suggestive horror in Cat People and his other films, I argue that this suggestive style of horror is just as effective and horrific as the excessive one, that it is neither better nor worse, but achieves similar ends through different means. The article proceeds with three main objectives: to define Tourneur’s concept of suggestion with the associated problem of caricature to which it responds, to delineate the formal ways that Tourneur’s horror philosophy appears in suggestion-images and to place Tourneur’s philosophy of suggestion in conversation with existing horror scholarship that defines the genre through excess. By doing so, I argue that Tourneur’s philosophy, as evidenced in Cat People, forces us to think differently about the horror genre than ways which posit excess as its defining feature, ultimately envisioning a heretofore untheorized aspect of the genre: the horror of suggestion.

Résumé :
Simon Wiesenthal encapsulates the impossibility of forgiveness in the face of Holocaust evil. Deconstructionist, Jacques Derrida articulates what he describes as the aporia of forgiveness—that once given it degenerates into an economy of exchange and thus negates the ‘purity’ of forgiveness. In Paul and the Gift John Barclay offers a New Testament response to contemporary voices. He argues that whilst the gift of the gospel is unconditional, it does not come unconditioned and identifies six ‘perfections’ of the gift of grace we receive in response to the Gospel. The free gift does indeed come with conditions. Anselm and McLeod Campbell are offered as examples of atonement that incorporate various aspects of Barclay’s presentation of gift.

Przebaczenie jako kategoria współczesnego dyskursu pamięci na przykładzie Kinderszenen Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza i Słonecznika Szymona Wiesenthala Forgiveness as a Category of Modern Memory Discourse as Seen in Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s Kinderszenen and Simon Wiesenthal’s The Sunflower:On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness The text attempts to describe forgiveness as one of the key categories of modern memory discourse. To this end the authors analyzed two texts: Kinderszenen by Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and Simon Wiesenthal’s The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness. Even though the two texts talk explicitly about forgiveness, the unexpressed discourse rules they are based on turn out to be equally interesting. Among them, following Jacques Derrida’s suggestion, it is possible to attribute the biggest importance to the definition of the “unforgivable,” towards which the question about the act of forgiveness occurs to be secondary. Paralleled reading of the two texts allows us then to see that it is not an act of forgiveness or lack of forgiveness, but a call for forgiveness (or for no forgiveness) which constitutes the basic practice of memory today. The attitude toward this call is the basis on which memory communities constitute themselves.

Thomas de Vio Cajetan produced a highly influential Thomistic treatise on analogy entitled De nominum analogia. The merits of this work have been contested since the sixteenth century. Notable twentieth-century Thomists who adopted many of the teachings of De nominum analogia include Jacques Maritain and Yves Simon. Joshua Hochschild’s The Semantics of Analogy highlighted the significance of chapter ten, where Cajetan applies his theory to resolve the problem of demonstrations that use analogous terms, with the explicit purpose of addressing a serious challenge from Scotists regarding the use of analogy in metaphysics. This paper examines the criticism of Cajetan’s way of using analogous terms in demonstrations by the seventeenth-century Franciscan Scotist Bartolomeo Mastri. It shows how the Thomist differs from the Scotist and analyzes these rival positions.

Abstract Between the late 1620s and late 1640s, Jacques Blanchard, Simon Vouet, and Claude Vignon all painted the femme forte (strong woman), an exemplary, heroic femal type whose popularity was linked to the presence of Marie de Medici and Anne of Austria on the royal stage of France. This article puts early seventeenth-century French paintings of femmes fortes into conversation with period discourse regarding the reception of paintings and the status of women. Pictorial representation tended to cast the femme forte into contexts that compromised her exemplary status. Nude, on the verge of death by her own hand, the figure of the femme forte invited the very kind of sensual consumption that the femme forte herself attempted to disavow. Yet the ultimate threat posed by the femme forte was that her image might ‘trick’ male viewers into unwise actions.

In this paper, I examine the connections between ethics and aesthetics in the writing of Seamus Heaney. Looking at Heaney’s neologism of ‘po-ethics’, I move through his poetry and especially his translation of Sophocles’ Philoctetes, entitled The Cure at Troy, and focus on his Fourth Irish Human Rights Commission Annual Human Rights Lecture: Writer & Righter, wherein he traces a number of strong connections between human rights workers and creative writers. The essay is written through a theoretical matrix of the ethical theories of Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas and Simon Critchley. It looks at poems from Heaney himself, as well as work from Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, Czeslaw Miłosz, and Primo Levi. It focuses on poetic language as a discourse that can act as a counterweight and as a form of redress on behalf of the dignity of the individual human being against the pressures of mass culture and society.

Born in Cumbria in 1954, he shared classes with McBurney during training at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, before returning to Britain to develop his acting career. In this interview with NTQ Co-Editor Maria Shevtsova, held in London in December 2004, Clive Mendus discusses aspects of his work at the Lecoq School, while his account of playing with Complicite – particularly in The Street of Crocodiles (1992) and Measure for Measure (2003) – sheds light on the improvisation processes which are characteristic of the company, as well as on Mendus’s sense of himself as an actor. Measure for Measure toured Wroclaw, Madrid, Mumbai, Bangalore, Milan, Grenoble, and Berlin in 2005. Apart from accumulating a range of theatre experiences, Mendus has worked in film and television, including such television series as EastEnders and The Bill.

The theological turn in continental philosophy has beckoned several new possibilities for theoretical discourse. More recently, the question of the absence of a political theology has been raised: Can an ethics of alterity offer a more substantive politics? In pursuing this question, the article considers the late work of Jacques Derrida and John D. Caputo. It argues that, contrary to caricatures of Caputo’s “theology of event,” his notion of theopoetics evinces a “materialist turn” in his mature thought that can be considered the beginning of a “radical political theology.” This position is not without its challenges, however, raising concerns over deconstruction’s ability to navigate the immanent but necessary dangers of politics. In order to attempt to speak of a form of “radical political theology”—i.e. a movement from theopoetics to theopraxis—the article turns to some of the political writing of Simon Critchley. It is argued that a much desired “political viscerality” for a radical political theology is supplied by Critchley’s anarchic realism. The latter is neither conceived as utopian nor defeatist, but as a sustained program of inventive and creative political interventions, which act as responses to the singularity of the situation.

This article focuses on four foreign architects who attended Blondel's school during the 1740s and 1750s: the Dutch architect Pieter de Swart, Sir William Chambers, and German architects Simon Louis du Ry and Karl Philipp Christian von Gontard. Through analysis of relatively unknown documentary evidence, the author reconstructs the actual content of Blondel's teachings. These sources underline Blondel's importance as a promoter of the study of architecture at all levels of society, a principal teacher of both theory and design, a master of spatial organization, a critic of contemporary architectural taste (Rococo and early neoclassicism), and an enthusiastic advocate of the interests of the architect as a professional in control of the entire building process. On the whole Blondel's views were heartily embraced by his foreign students. These facts suggest that, from an international perspective, Blondel should be regarded as a major propagator of the renewal and revival of the language of classicism and not merely as a traditionalist or as the last great theoretician of the Renaissance. Designs completed by his foreign students in their subsequent careers illustrate Blondel's efficacy in changing attitudes to classical architecture and theory, particularly outside France. After their schooling at Blondel's École des Arts, Chambers, de Swart, du Ry, and Gontard all rose to important positions in their homelands and, thanks to their acquired skills, used their education to redirect the practice of architecture. Moreover, their approaches to architectural education, theory, design, history, and contemporary taste clearly distinguished them as disciples of Blondel. To a large extent, they personified Blondel's new professionalism and were responsible for spreading his doctrine and renewed classicism throughout Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century and, at least in part, for carrying it well into the nineteenth century.

Medieval Light on Modern Injustice, New York: Routledge, 2012).

Résumé :
Abstract Introduction: Casitas B-lineage lymphoma b (Cbl-b), a RING finger E3 ligase and a member of a highly conserved family of Cbl proteins, catalyzes the ubiquitination of substrate proteins to regulate multiple signaling events in a variety of cell types, including immune cells. In T cells, Cbl-b negatively regulates adaptive immune system signaling by establishing the threshold for the activation of antigen receptors. Additionally, Cbl-b regulates the function of other immune cell types, including NK cells, dendritic cells (DC) and monocytes. Cbl-b deficient T cells no longer require a costimulatory signal to be fully activated. Cbl-b KO mice spontaneously reject tumors via an enhanced immune response. Taken together, these findings point to Cbl-b inhibitors as having the potential to be highly efficacious immuno-oncology agents. Experimental Procedures: A structure-based drug design approach was used to identify potent inhibitors of Cbl-b. Biochemical and cellular binding assays, a cellular NFAT-luciferase reporter assay, as well as primary in vitro human and mouse T cell activation assays measuring IL-2 production were used to profile inhibitor compounds. In vivo activity of Cb-b inhibitors was evaluated using an anti-CD3 mouse model and a CT-26 syngeneic mouse model Results: Cbl-b inhibitor NTX-001 potently binds to Cbl-b, preventing Cbl-b phosphorylation and binding to E2. In cells, NTX-001 treatment results in enhanced phosphorylation of ZAP-70, a protein proximal to the TCR and reported to be a direct substrate of Cbl-b. Additionally, inhibition of Cbl-b potently enhances cytokine secretion from primary human and mouse T cells. In vivo, an increase in cytokines and T cell activation markers was observed after a single dose of NTX-001. Repeated dosing of NTX-001 showed dose-dependent anti-tumor activity in the colorectal CT-26 syngeneic model. Conclusions: NTX-001 is a potent Cbl-b inhibitor that demonstrated strong T cell activation and anti-tumor activity in a syngeneic tumor model. These data support Cbl-b inhibitors as a promising therapeutic opportunity for cancer treatment. Citation Format: Fred Csibi-Levin, Silvana Leit, David L. Laughton, Tom Baker, Suzanne L. Résumé :
Abstract In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is associated with programmed cell death ligand 1 expression that is induced by interferon-γ-produced by tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells. However, not all tumors with a PD-L1 expression and/or CD8+ T cell infiltrate respond to ICB, and some tumors without any PD-L1 expression respond to ICB. Moreover, little is known about all the mechanisms governing ICB resistance in NSCLC. The objective of the study was to investigate a circulating immunological signature (cytokines, chemokines and immune checkpoints) which could be predictive of resistance to ICB in patients with advanced NSCLC. We performed a multiplexed analysis on 23 TruCulture® (in vitro T cells activation system) and 41 plasma samples using the Luminex® platform (Bio-Techne, MN USA). We investigated the relationship between the levels at baseline of 30 circulating analytes and the response to ICB of advanced NSCLC patients. Through the TruCulture® samples analysis, we identified two types of responders depending on T cell functionality. The responders with a functional T cell activation had lower levels of neutrophil associated analytes (CXCL5/6; p-value<0.05) than non-responders. They had lower levels of IL-13 and higher levers of TNFα, respectively Th2 and Th1/CD8+/NK associated analytes. All responders had lower levels of CCL17 and higher levels of CXCL10 in plasma samples, respectively M2/N2 and M1/N1 associated analytes. This study highlighted two distinct profiles of ICB responders. The first group has a functional T cell response with a favorable orientation to antitumor cytotoxic action (Th1/CD8+) and few cytokines associated with neutrophils. The second group has a poor functional T cell response, whereas their favorable response to ICB is potentially linked to the activation of the innate immune response. The plasma study highlighted the potential role of polarization of the innate response in the context of the response to ICB for all patients.
