The study was designed to establish the extent and nature of the difficulties clubs experience with a view to preparing the way for creating practical guidance on ways to overcome them. Clearly, in order to survive in the long term, small professional football clubs require very effective strategic decisions. This study has addressed this issue by inquiring into the nature of strategy making for these organisations with the objective to establish the general direction in which the football clubs in question should be moving. As a result, the main research question to guide this investigation was determined as: Why do small professional football clubs have difficulties making strategies. The investigation was based on an analysis the concept of strategy and its elements, the strategic vision and objectives, the process by which strategic action comes about, the strategic action itself, and the context within which this action occurs. Data has been collected, analysed and interpreted in relation to each of these elements. Together with a wide variety of published material, 20 small football clubs have been sampled and personal interviews were conducted with board members of those clubs. The findings indicate that small football clubs do indeed experience considerable difficulties in making strategies, the reasons for which lie both in the characteristics of their competitive environment and their approaches to strategy-making. The competitive environment is characterised by a cartel-like structure with a high degree of regulation, high levels of uncertainty, little control over the core product or the production process, short-term business cycles and a close geographical link between a club with its local market. The management of clubs is characterised by the need to balance conflicting sporting and business objectives. Formal planning techniques are of little use in the small football club context as decision-making processes have a strong political character and the development of novel strategies is hindered by a strong conservative, industry paradigm and a lack of financial and managerial resources. It is concluded that there is no simple advice to be given to clubs, as they must re-examine the relationship between their playing and business objectives to create a unified and workable approach.

Tomada como uma resposta à questão da brasilidade, a antropofagia é, no entanto, algo além. Configura-se como um pensamento oriundo de problemas de proveniências múltiplas tendo, por isso, significados múltiplos. Por um lado, é produto das rupturas propostas pelas vanguardas artísticas europeias; por outro, deve sua existência à situação brasileira de então, quer no terreno das teorias sobre o Brasil, quer no campo socioeconômico. Sua origem, entretanto, não restringe seu potencial especulativo. Tanto assim que ela é passível de ser vista não apenas como uma filosofia da cultura ou uma estética – o que atesta sua filiação às áreas de pensamento supracitadas -, mas também como uma teoria que tem matizes ontológicas. Dito isso, a presente dissertação tem por objetivo elucidar as condições de possibilidade do surgimento da antropofagia e, com isso, expor seu potencial criativo. A nossa tese é a de que a antropofagia é formulado de modo a estar entre a filosofia da cultura e a ontologia, sendo necessária a incursão em ambas para que se possa compreendê-lo de maneira mais profunda. Ademais, buscamos defender a ideia de que a antropofagia é um pensamento original brasileiro na dupla acepção da expressão: original por dever sua origem ao Brasil, dando ênfase na origem do pensamento; e original por ser uma contribuição, tal e qual a contribuição milionária dos erros já anunciada por Oswald de Andrade no Manifesto da Poesia Pau-Brasil de 1924.
Usually thought of as an answer to what it means to be a Brazilian, the modernist notion of anthropophagy is something that goes beyond this simplistic point of view. We claim here that anthropophagy is a philosophy that originates from multiple sources having, because of that, multiple meanings. In one hand, it is one of the many byproducts of European avant-garde; on the other, we could say it also owns its existence to the Brazilian context of the time of its creation, namely 1928. Because of that, we also claim that anthropophagy is not only a philosophy of culture nor is it only aesthetics or a way of making art: even though it is also those two things, it is not restricted to them, being also a theory with ontological nuances. With that in mind, the present work has one clear objective: to clarify the conditions which were necessary for such a way of thinking to emerge. By doing that, we believe, we will also be exploring the creativity inherent to that philosophy. Our thesis is that anthropophagy is a hybrid thought that lies between ontology and philosophy of culture. One must understand both aspects of this thought in order to understand anthropophagy itself. We also seek to defend the idea that the anthropophagic thought of Oswald de Andrade is an original Brazilian philosophy. Original here means two different things: first, being indebted to Brazilian context in order to exist because it was created to answer what the Brazil of then was all about, so its origin in Brazilian because it originates from Brazil; secondly original because it is also singular and, because of that, unique.

Fuzzy rule-based systems (FRBS) use the principle of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic to describe vague and imprecise statements and provide a facility to express the behaviours of the system with a human-understandable language. Fuzzy information, once defined by a fuzzy system, is fixed regardless of the circumstances and therefore makes it very difficult to capture the effect of context on the meaning of the fuzzy terms. While efforts have been made to integrate contextual information into the representation of fuzzy sets, it remains the case that often the context model is very restrictive and/or problem specific. The work reported in this thesis is our attempt to create a practical frame work to integrate contextual information into the representation of fuzzy sets so as to improve the interpretability as well as the accuracy of the fuzzy system. Throughout this thesis, we have looked at the capability of the proposed context dependent fuzzy sets as a stand alone as well as in combination with other methods in various application scenarios ranging from time series forecasting to complicated car racing control systems. In all of the applications, the highly competitive performance nature of our approach has proven its effectiveness and efficiency compared with existing techniques in the literature.

Our increasing knowledge of the critical landscape in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC makes it timely to consider how Hellenistic poets may have been responding, in the way they composed their poems, to contemporary debates about the function of poetry, its defining characteristics, its style and how it should be read. In doing so we may gain a greater understanding of their poetry and its context. Callimachus’ poetry provides the most compelling case study for looking at this type of interaction and in this thesis I want to focus on a number of aspects of Callimachus’ poetic style and to set them in the context of roughly contemporary literary criticism, reading practice and linguistic theory. One of the major themes of the thesis is the relationship between Callimachus’ poetic style and use of language and Aristotelian theory. This ranges from the argument that it is often useful to assess aspects of Callimachean style against the background of Aristotelian theory, to the suggestion that at times Callimachus may be responding to specific Aristotelian ideas. I also discuss the idea put forward by certain scholars that Stoic theory can illuminate aspects of Callimachean style and linguistic practice. In the course of the thesis there is a movement away from an initial focus on Aristotelian theory and its formal concerns to the development of etymology as an exegetical practice and the allegorical mode of interpretation. In a shorter first part I outline the critical idea, linguistic theory or reading practice in question, before looking in the second part at the relevant aspect of Callimachus’ poetic style and how it might be interacting with, or responding to, the material discussed previously.

The integrity of positioning systems has become an increasingly important requirement for location-based Intelligent Transports Systems (ITS). The navigation systems, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), used in ITS cannot provide the high quality positioning information required by most services, due to the various type of errors from GPS sensor, such as signal outage, and atmospheric effects, all of which are difficult to measure, or from the map matching process. Consequently, an error in the positioning information or map matching process may lead to inaccurate determination of a vehicle’s location. Thus, the integrity is require when measuring both vehicle’s positioning and other related information such as speed, to locate the vehicle in the correct road segment, and avoid errors. The integrity algorithm for the navigation system should include a guarantee that the systems do not produce misleading or faulty information; as this may lead to a significant error arising in the ITS services. Hence, to achieve the integrity requirement a navigation system should have a robust mechanism, to notify the user of any potential errors in the navigation information. The main aim of this research is to develop a robust and reliable mechanism to support the positioning requirement of ITS services. This can be achieved by developing a high integrity GPS monitoring algorithm with the consideration of speed, based on the concept of context-awareness which can be applied with real time ITS services to adapt changes in the integrity status of the navigation system. Context-aware architecture is designed to collect contextual information about the vehicle, including location, speed and heading, reasoning about its integrity and reactions based on the information acquired. In this research, three phases of integrity checks are developed. These are, (i) positioning integrity, (ii) speed integrity, and (iii) map matching integrity. Each phase uses different techniques to examine the consistency of the GPS information. A receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) algorithm is used to measure the quality of the GPS positioning data. GPS Doppler information is used to check the integrity of vehicle’s speed, adding a new layer of integrity and improving the performance of the map matching process. The final phase in the integrity algorithm is intended to verify the integrity of the map matching process. In this phase, fuzzy logic is also used to measure the integrity level, which guarantees the validity and integrity of the map matching results. This algorithm is implemented successfully, examined using real field data. In addition, a true reference vehicle is used to determine the reliability and validity of the output. The results show that the new integrity algorithm has the capability to support a various types of location-based ITS services.

This Dissertation investigates all of A.W.N. Pugin’s known English residential architecture for the first time, placing it in the context of the domestic and institutional architecture of comparable small buildings, particularly Anglican parsonages, of the period in which he lived and worked. The Dissertation is preceded by a summary of the theoretical issues that architects were addressing from the beginning of the nineteenth century, in particular those which Pugin was later to make a central part of his own theoretical writings. Following an examination of the conventions of the domestic architecture of the period, the Dissertation analyses Pugin’s own buildings, primarily categorising them by plan type. Pugin’s attitude to the orientation, location and landscape of his work is then considered, followed by an analysis of his preferred building forms, their materials, their detailing, and their decoration. In addition, the Dissertation investigates the extent to which Pugin’s architecture was actually historicist, reviving English or Continental Gothic forms and details. The Dissertation further investigates Pugin’s professional practice as a domestic architect, defining the nature of his partnership with his favoured building contractor, George Myers, in the context of contemporary contracting practice. The practical problems of Pugin’s constructions, and the character of his professional relationship with his clients are also assessed. The thesis proposes that elements of Pugin’s architectural theory existed previous to his career amongst English architectural writers and critics, but that medium and small houses designed between 1800 and the mid-1840s were overwhelmingly based on a limited number of conventionalised plans. It will show that Pugin’s residential planning was inherently different from that of these conventional buildings, and that it is classifiable into a number of distinct categories. This thesis furthermore argues that Pugin’s residential architecture was often far from functional and was not essentially historicist. This thesis will show that the planning of medium and small houses changed radically from the 1840s, incorporating aspects of planning which Pugin had pioneered; a conclusion suggests to what extent Pugin’s architectural creativity was expressive of cultural change and preoccupation beyond the realm of architecture. An Appendix is attached which summarises the chronology of all of Pugin’s known residential works.

The focus of this thesis is the Visio Baronti (VB), an account of a seventh-century monk's journey to the other world. This text serves as a metaphoric fulcrum to support a more extensive study of early medieval conceptions of the other world and the historical context in which visionary accounts were produced. Chapter 1 contains an introduction to ideas of the other world, a survey of types of visionary experiences, their uses, imitations and historiographical responses to them. Chapter 2 focuses on medieval and modern responses to visions. This chapter includes a survey of the terminology for dreams and visions found in theoretical writings, compares dream theory with otherworld visions and identifies medieval methods of determining the validity of a visionary experience. Chapter 3 investigates the manuscript tradition of the VB, in order to illuminate medieval receptions and treatments of this text. Because the text appears unusual for the seventh century, chapter 4 provides an analysis of the grounds for dating the VB to the seventh century, while chapter 5 treats the VB in its seventh-century monastic context and assesses what influences shaped this text. Chapter 6 compares Barontus's vision with ninth-century visions and other Carolingian writings to consider Carolingian interest in the VB in light of their contributions to the genre. Chapter 7 examines the artistic response to this text through an examination of the illustrations which accompany the text in the ninth-century St Petersburg manuscript. A brief conclusion to this study follows.

The prologue studies the Tory publication of Milton's Character of the Long Parliament (1681). It argues that the provenance of this tract is best explained if Milton did in fact attempt to include the Digression in his History of Britain. Further ambiguities in Milton's early reputation are discussed in a review of the History's reception. Chapter I surveys Milton's response to the long standing demand for a national history and briefly reconsiders his ideas on history and historiography. Chapter II proposes that his political sympathies led Milton to look to the British legends for his historical subject. The strong Protestant and Tudor associations of such native myth have been largely overlooked, and yet they bear strongly on Milton's proposals for a British historical poem. His reappraisal of the myths in the History indicates his disillusionment with his original historical project: and reflects his changing opinion of the national character. Chapter III charts Milton's response to the legends surrounding Lucius, Constantine and the early British church, and traces conflicts between his need to deny church history and his desire to rewrite it. It then turns to his curiously muted views on the Saxon church. Chapter IV compares the use of Gildas's De Excidio in the History with Milton's relative silence on Arthur. Milton's regard for this ancient British jeremiad recalls that of the Reformers and suggests the instability of his commitment to purely classical styles of historiography in his time. Chapter V surveys the conflicting ideological and religious pressures on the history of the Saxons and the Conquest and compares Milton's shifting response to these in his political tracts with his views in the History. The Epilogue returns to Milton's view of the national character, with special reference to the Digression. Presenting his references to climate theory in a wider context, it argues that in moving from a loosely predestinarian position to a belief in free will, Milton first sought some determining natural force to explain England's conduct through the ages.

This thesis seeks to develop our understanding of the Scriblerians' attitude towards 'scientific' discoveries, theories and practices, and in particular seeks to emphasize the significance of the cultural context of science. Chapter One analyses the satirical 'miscegenation' of alchemy, the new science and index learning in Swift's A Tale of a Tub, before outlining the relevance of Richard Bentley's Boyle lectures to Swift's early works. In Chapter Two consideration of Swift's depiction of Isaac Newton's involvement in the Wood's Halfpence affair in The Drapier's Letters leads to an analysis of the 'Voyage to Laputa' in the context of the political hegemony of Newtonianism in the Hanoverian court. The third chapter considers how Pope discriminated between areas of scientific enquiry: supporting Newton but wary of 'Newtonianism'; interested in science but suggesting it can become an obsession. While discussing lesser-known texts by Arbuthnot and Gay, Chapter Four attempts to show that the Scriblerians were intensely aware that the legitimation of scientific narratives depended upon creating boundaries between rival theories and practices: sites of cultural exchange they exploited in their satires. The Conclusion suggests that understanding Scriblerian attacks on science must acknowledge the widest possible cultural context and accept that on occasions the 'science' itself may not be the main satiric target.

Although civil societies in Central and Eastern Europe are often portrayed as similar, united by a shared communist past, they have developed along increasingly divergent trajectories over the past three decades. This article investigates the current state of civil society in the region and the role the institutional context plays in it. Drawing on historical institutionalism and the process of European integration, we classify the 14 countries under investigation into three distinct groups and analyze data from a survey of more than 350 local civil society experts. We find that, together with domestic governments, international donors and the EU are perceived as the most influential institutional actors for civil society organizations. Their respective influences, however, depend largely on a country's stage in the EU accession process. Overall, the study provides a differentiated mapping of civil society in this region and a better understanding of how the institutional context relates to a Country's civil society.

The thesis is an attempt to reconcile contradictions and devise historical meaning from a problematic text. The book is Wilhelm Reich's Character Analysis, first published in 1933. This influential psychoanalytic work embodies both a radical social theory and disturbing authoritarian attitudes. The thesis uses a variety of methodologies, in particular Roland Barthes' techniques for ascribing historical meaning to certain formal qualities of writing. The thesis proceeds from a summary of methodological studies in intellectual history and criticism, including those of I. A. Richards, R. G. Collingwood, and Dominick LaCapra, as well as Barthes, to a description of Character Analysis and its various historical contexts - biographical, social, and intellectual. The thesis relies on the authoritative biography of Reich, by Myron Scharaf, on autobiographical accounts by Reich's wife and son, on other texts in psychoanalytic social theory by Erik Erikson, Erich Fromm, Herbert Marcuse, Georges Bataille, and Max Horkheimer, and on secondary scholarship on the origins of National Socialist ideology. The thesis argues that despite the influence of reactionary tendencies in Reich's personality and cultural and social milieu, Character Analysis remains a valuable work in the development of a convincing theory of liberation.

Our mandate in this thesis is in essence to tackle and complete two inter-linked, tripartite tasks. Firstly, the sources and traditions of the inaugural throne-vision of the Apocalypse (Rev. 4-5) will be considered; its contents and omissions will be closely examined; and its progressive context will be traced throughout the book with special attention being given to its relationship with the final eschatological vision (Rev. 21-22). Secondly, in parallel and in conjunction with these first three objectives, there is a further threefold consideration which stems from this primary analysis. This secondary concern will deal with the doctrine of God, the Christology of the Lamb, and the eschatological hope of the Christian. These tasks will serve to firmly anchor Revelation in its Jewish traditional background, and John's methods employed in handling these sources will be described. The comparison of the inaugural and the final throne-room visions will be made, and also their resemblance with and difference from other throne-room scenes will be highlighted. Finally John's theological messages, that develop from this, will be detailed.

The purpose of this study is to advance understanding of the probable intentions of the current Soviet leadership in their initiatives for peace, cooperation, and disarmament. This study concludes that, rather than embodying new political thinking that might evoke well-founded hope in the West for genuine peace and stability, Soviet initiatives reflect a long-term Soviet orientation toward unilateral strategic advantage. The West should therefore respond to these initiatives with caution and vigilance. The primary methodology of this study is qualitative content analysis of key expressions of Soviet policy by authoritative spokesmen. Two areas of background to contemporary Soviet peace programs, the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, 1973-75, and Soviet commentary on U.S. nuclear freeze movements in 1980-84, are examined as well. This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.

Ripon Minster has usually been discussed in the context of England’s cathedrals and monastic churches. Its status as parish church has been overlooked. This thesis examines its role as parish church and its place in the society of its parish. An interdisciplinary approach is employed to analyse both the building and the institution. The following subjects are addressed: the exercise of power and authority by the minster clergy, the social significance of the use of space in the minster, the renovation of the church building after 1450, the minster as an employer of building craftsmen, and the minster as landlord. The Chapter of canons wielded significant power over the parish with its authority coming from St Wilfrid. The institutional aspect of the minster set it apart from most contemporary parish churches and had an effect on how parishioners could use and alter the building, and also had a significant impact on liturgy and commemoration. Nevertheless, lay foundation of guilds within the minster and widespread support for the building campaigns after 1450 demonstrate devotion to the minster as parish church. By analysing the use of the building, the disruptive effects of the tower repair and nave renovation campaigns are demonstrated. While the primary focus is on the building and its use, the minster cannot be understood in its social context without examining it in the wider parish. Analysis of the chapels and charitable institutions of the parish shows that the minster became increasingly important as parish church around 1400. The Fabric’s employment practices and urban estate management are also significant in that they show how the minster’s needs fuelled the building industry and shaped the urban landscape in a time when the Fabric was forced to respond to the social changes caused by the Black Death.

The thesis explores the phenomenon of a `Newlyn school'; it contextualizes its origins in the later 1880s focussing on the artistic and cultural values associated with it and examines subsequent developments. The thesis looks at the settlement of artists in Newlyn in the 1880s, and the connections between developments there and the impact of the work of Bastien- Lepage as well as making links to the contemporary Nature Movement in England. It considers the painting of rural imagery `on the spot' and the concern to achieve `open-air effects'. The latter did not necessarily imply painting out of doors indeed it could include interiors. Artists working in Newlyn attracted patronage from philanthropic industrialists desirous of effecting beneficial influence on the urban poor. This appears to account for the early interest in Newlyn-based artists in Birmingham. It is argued that there was nothing unique about the interests of artists who settled in Newlyn nor any interest in developing a special `school' in the early 1880s. However, after the work of Frank Bramley and Stanhope Forbes began to interest critics in London matters changed. While Braniley's A Hopeless Dawn (RA 1888) stimulated the notion that there was something special about Newlyn art, it was the highly ambitious Forbes who , profited most from the concept. In the following decade he successfully promoted himself as the guiding light of Newlyn art. The thesis also considers how the promotion of a `Newlyn school' in 1889 coincided with the concerns at the Royal Academy to promote a national form of art to counter the threat of Whistlerian internationalism and other types of modernism. However, subsequent coverage was unenthusiastic and short-lived. The thesis concludes with exploring how Forbes subsequently mythologized Newlyn, identifying the `school' with his own artistic persona.

This thesis aims to reposition the halo’s status within an artwork through arguing a reassessment of its activity 'as a sign' rather than acceptance of its passivity. This active state is further explored and expanded by a heuristic application of semiotic theory to interrogate its fluctuation between sign/non-sign and its oscillation between a seemingly real status and behaviour juxtaposed with its very consciously artificial “manifestation”. A variety of halo shapes are considered, together with texture contained in and on its surface, and this has revealed the Venetian and Venetan artistic innovation of “glass” and “silk” haloes, through artists’ utilisation of contemporaneous industrial practices and their application to halo appearance. Additionally, extant architectural vocabulary is translated and reformulated into internal halo motifs by Venetian and Venetan artists, further enhancing the halo’s somatic characteristics, contextualized by examination of halo representation in various media in Florence, Rome and Siena, and a consideration of haloes within other, mainly Italian, centres. Additionally, the fugitive and transient qualities of the nimbus are noted, with its mimesis of the dying corporeal body in its fading insubstantiality, a further factor in its inexorably reductive form as increasing realism in art challenges its ontological traits. Textual characters contained within the halo body are also examined in their many forms and languages and their contribution to an intertextual function espoused by the ideologeme. An adjunct to this function is the halo’s propagandist role presented by artists. It will be demonstrated how all these different strands of interpretation are imbricated in the changing theological, political and societal landscape, encapsulated within the halo.

This thesis argues that James Mill's History of British India is, on the one hand, intellectually linked to the Scottish Enlightenment, while, on the other hand, moves beyond that intellectual tradition in the post-French Revolution age. This thesis makes three central claims. First, it argues that in reacting to Montesqueiu's idea of oriental society, the contributors to the Scottish Enlightenment used ideas of moral philosophy, philosophical history and political economy in order to create an image of a wealthy Asia whose societies possessed barbarous social manners. Some new writings about Asian societies that were published in the 1790s adopted Montesquieu' s views of oriental societies, and started to consider the history of manners and of political institutions as the true criteria of the state of civilisation. These works criticised some Asian social manners, such as female slavery, and questioned previous assumptions about the high civilisation of Indian and Chinese societies. This thesis argues that Mill's History, following William Robertson's History of America, was based on a study of the historical mind to interpret the texts published in the 1790s and the early nineteenth century. Second, this thesis argues that Mill adopted Francis Jeffrey's idea of semi-barbarism in his study of India. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, William Alexander and Francis J effrey started to think of history in the context of a tri -stadia! theory, which was more idealist and less materialist than the earlier four-stages theory. Mill tried to develop a holistic view of Asian society. In so doing, he came to criticise the British government's mistaken mercantilist view of government, which he regarded as unsuitable for the conditions of Indian society. Following Adam Smith's moral philosophy, and inspired by the socio-economic progress of North America, Mill suggested that the primary goals for the British government in India should be to improve its agriculture and to secure social freedom. This thesis also concludes that the discussions about Chinese society played an important part in shaping Mill's view of the concept of semi-barbarism. The theory of semi-barbarism helped Mill to reject the cultural ideology of Hindu superiority over Muslim societies. Lastly, this thesis argues that Mill's History was influenced by and sought to accommodate Benthamite Utilitarianism. Mill believed the supposed semi-barbarous and problematic native of Indian society could be reformed without following the steps taken by European history or institutions. He prescribed a powerful state for India in order to remove the mercantilist view of government, and to execute administrative and judicial reforms. This thesis concludes that, while Scottish philosophical history helped Mill to create a critique of the British government's attempts to govern India as a commercial society, Benthamite Utilitarianism taught Mill to see history from a teleological viewpoint.

The notion of context has come to the fore in recent years both in the study and teaching of language. Despite the oveniding importance attached to the concept and the number and variety of definitions provided, the lack of a comprehensive and workable definition based on systematic analysis has become increasingly apparent. The present thesis intends to clear up the confusion that surrounds the concept. Its main contribution is a theoretical framework of two distinct perspectives on context, which emerges as a result of the scrutiny of numerous definitions available in language study. The framework is then applied to the investigation and categorisation of interpretations of context offered by various theories in linguistics. The pedagogic implementation of the framework aims to identifY which conception of context has informed a particular language teaching development. Once that has been established, it is examined how the application of one or the other perspective determines the constitution and characteristics of various trends in language pedagogy. It is demonstrated that a clear understanding of the type of context model adopted by different language teaching practices can reveal the incongruent nature of approaches and methods commonly described as communicative. As a corollary, more recent developments attempting to broaden the scope of the communicative movement are also explored.

In this dissertation, we present a cost-effective, neural network-based technique for data sanity checking and small system parameter monitoring which utilizes the contextual information in which data is collected to avoid the need for multiple metering. Multiple metering is not always a feasible nor an optimal solution to the problem. In an environment where it is necessary to monitor a large number of different physical variables, the mere installation and maintenance of multiple metering equipment can prove to be very costly. Moreover, multiple measurements of the same quantity result in a phenomenon known as data explosion. Context-based sensoyvalidation is achieved through cross sensor redundancy, which is not to be confused with metering redundancy. Neural networks are used to model the relationships among the various parameters and to provide context-based estimates which help in identifying sensor (versus system) malfunction. Slow tracking of the relationships among the parameters as they change over time is made possible through on-line training of the neural networks on the most recent data. This helps to account for the dependency of the relationships among system parameters on the range of external variables such as ambient temperature.
A prototypical system titled DASANEX is implemented to illustrate the validity of the technique. The system is used to monitor and filter real-time transformer and ambient temperature data. A proof-of-concept is established using field data from the city of Martinsville Electric Department. Results prove the superior ability of the technique to identify sensor malfunction and to provide real-time adequate replacement values during short downtimes of the sensors even when some sensor data are missing or contaminated.Ph. In the last decade the role of context awareness, traditionally focused on human to machine interaction, has broadened its perspectives to the machine to machine paradigma. The main goal of this dissertation is both to understand how to apply context awareness to situations , perceived by smart devices, and to conceptually stretch context modeling to a dynamic contextualization in human to machine interactions.
The roots of the Internet of Things paradigma reside in the efforts reached in the Wireless Sensor Networks technology, mostly in data aggregation and in energy saving, and the adoption of multi-agent modeling has gained context awareness application to machine to machine interaction. A well defined methodology, previously applied to human to machine interaction, now can be adopted for smart devices, that behave like humans.
Another evidence of the emergence of the Internet of Things technology nowadays comes from the everyday life experience. The Internet of Things is the key for the practical implementation of innovative software systems for the ubiquitous computing. Thanks to all these technologies, Smart devices (like the Nest Thermostat or the Apple Watch) are currently more and more integrated among them and they are becoming invisible servants for final users. As a proof of this new technological era, we can think about how the usage of the Siri tool has become an automated and unconscious mechanism in looking for a telephone number, in reaching a specific destination, or in driving home heating, to understand the potentialities of merging context awareness to the Internet of Things in a convergent and ubiquitous platform.
The enormous amount of smart devices, currently deployed in the world, have also to deal with an easy knowledge representation of sensed context, in order to provide new mechanisms to automate daily tasks, understanding the behavior of end-users within the surrounding environment.
On the other hand, the rapid growing number of smart devices deployed has a drawback in the future proliferation of high level context models, possibly coupled to lower context levels.
What emerges from the current study is the necessity to easy the management of multiple contexts, to be used by upper level applications. The dynamic contextualization solves this kind of issues, distinguishing from the total amount of features, captured from the surrounding environment, and the context model that is closely related to the issue to be solved.
Deep profiling on context aware usage enhances the development of context aware services, that can simply use an abstraction layer to properly manage underlying context models. What can be deduced is that the customization of context aware services to the user is a key process to narrow the gap between smart devices and their daily usage.
In this dissertation, the definition of high level scenarios have been determined by applying decision trees, for their huge potentialities expressed in dynamic context extraction.
Applications of these concepts were used in developing management systems, addressed to an audience of experienced surgeons in breast cancer, covering surgical suggestions. The formal analysis of multiple datasets (related to the diagnosis of breast cancer), using interactive and navigable decision trees, showed the enormous potentialities of the system, both in knowledge representation (and its spreading), and in the identification of the context, considering the related decision support system mechanisms.
The conclusion of the research activity considers the emergence of context awareness in a future world, more and more full of smart devices connected among them, as an adaptive paradigm, for intra device optimizations and for final users application level benefits.

This thesis argues that the pertinent intellectual context for understanding Thomas F. Torrance's reconstruction of natural theology is the synthesis of the rational structure of knowledge and the material content of knowledge. The bridge between the synthesis of (i) rational structure and material content, and (ii) natural theology is the analogous relation Torrance set between the relation of natural theology and revealed theology and the relation of practical geometry and physics, which is constituted by the same formal relation of rational structure and material content. By examining Torrance's work on natural theology in this connection it is apparent that the germane methodological issue at stake is the manner of the relation between the rational structure of human understanding and the material content of God's self-revelation in theological cognition. Torrance's criticism of natural theology concerns its autonomous formulations in which theistic argumentation is established as an antecedent rational sub-structure, from which revealed theology is interpreted and cognized within an anthropocentric correlate system. Accordingly, Torrance's reconstruction of natural theology is the reconfiguration of the relation of rational structure and material content within theological rationality. Applied to the classical loci of natural theology, this takes the form of a reconceptualisation of the cosmological argument and ontological argument, such that the rational structure of theistic argumentation is determined through its connection to revelation at key points. The significance of this inversion of the relation of rational structure and material content extends outwards into Torrance's broader dogmatics, where natural theology is identified as the rational intra-structure of theology, which, in conjunction with revealed theology as material content, constitutes theological science. The result is a theological approach that sets itself as a development beyond Karl Barth's rejection of natural theology, which conceives of natural theology as the necessary but insufficient condition of theology, under the determination of God's self-revelation.

This thesis takes the American architect Steven Holl’s design in Beijing, Linked Hybrid, as a case study to investigate the social, political and cultural context of China’s contemporary architecture. The research focuses on the development, in an urban zone in the Dongzhimenwai area of Beijing, of a socialist paper mill community from the late 1980s into the Beijing Linked Hybrid community in 2010. The urban development process was analysed through six emic concepts, which were discovered in the course of ethnographic fieldwork research. These concepts are dayuan (big community or 大院), guanxi (personal connection or关系), mianzi (face or 面子), shi (trend or 势), mofan (exemplary model or 模范) and shanzhai (fake product or山寨). Fieldwork trips were undertaken between 2007 and 2010 to understand how the local community members of the paper mill and Linked Hybrid perceived the changes in their living environment. Key community members and architectural practitioners were traced and interviewed during the period of research. Written documentation from the paper mill’s propaganda department archives and the personal archives of an ex-worker about the area before the construction of Linked Hybrid, provided the historical context for the case study. The Linked Hybrid occupants eventually built a wall to enclose their new residential community, which was specifically designed to be an open community to solve China’s problematic urbanism. Thus, the architect’s architectural ideals became ineffective when his architecture was situated in the Chinese context that is described in this thesis.

This thesis considers the Anglo-Scandinavian stone sculpture produced in Yorkshire in the ninth to eleventh centuries. Six sculpture-producing sites are examined in detail: York Minster, Nunburnholme, Kirkleavington, Brompton, the related sites at Otley and Weston and Leeds. The landscape setting of each site is considered, looking back to the pre-historic and Roman as well as Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian contexts, and the sculpture analysed within this landscape setting. For a number of sites, including Nunburnholme and Leeds, this is the first sustained analysis of the sculpture with reference to its landscape setting. This methodology leads to a number of conclusions concerning the sculptural material and how it is best studied. The importance of studying the carvings with reference to their landscape settings is demonstrated. Within this context the Anglo-Scandinavian sculpture of Yorkshire is shown to be an innovative and hybrid body of work, not merely an ephemeral and relatively minor variant of the dominant Anglian sculptural tradition. It is also demonstrated from the analysis of a number of the sites that the patrons and carvers of Anglo-Scandinavian stone sculpture were consistently using these monuments to make statements about their power in the landscape, from which the stone itself was derived. The sites and sculpture considered in this thesis also show that the region’s stone sculpture was not a static body of work, but one which was repeatedly refashioned and given new meanings by successive waves of settlement and colonisation.
