Résumé :
In this paper, we investigate patterns of persistence and change affecting the syntax of nominal structures in Italiot Greek in comparison to Modern (and Ancient) Greek, and we explore the role of Southern Italo-Romance as a potential source of interference. Our aim is to highlight the dynamics that favor syntactic contact in this domain: we provide an overview of the social context where these dynamics have taken place and of the linguistic structures involved.

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper investigates aspects of adjectival modification in Romance and Greek of Southern Italy. In Italiot Greek, prenominal adjectives obey restrictions that do not exist in Standard Modern Greek, where all types of adjectives are allowed in prenominal position. As far as postnominal adjectives are concerned, in the textual tradition of Calabria Greek there is evidence of postnominal adjectives systematically articulated in definite nominal structures (henceforth DP s), in a structure similar to the so-called polydefinite construction that is typical of Standard Modern Greek (and of Greek in general since ancient times). Some residual evidence of such a construction is also found in Salento. Yet, in the varieties currently spoken in the two areas, postnominal adjectives are never articulated. The paper explores these patterns, with particular attention to the mechanisms potentially responsible for the loss of polydefiniteness.

Résumé :
The brown frog Rana graeca was believed to be present in two areas, the Balkan Peninsula and the Italian Apennines. We have characterised the S1 satellite DNA family from Rana graeca graeca and compared it with that of Rana graeca italica. On Southern blots, the patterns of S1 satellite DNA bands are very different between Italian and Greek specimens, but homogeneous among various populations of the same taxon. The satellite DNA from the Greek taxon contains two repetitive units (S1a (494 bp) and S1b (363 bp)) that could be sequenced after amplification from genomic DNA to directly yield their consensus sequences in each genome. These consensus sequences were very similar among the Greek populations, but differed either in sequence (in S1a) or in both size and sequence (in S1b) from the corresponding repeats of the Italian taxon. A mechanism of concerted evolution is likely responsible for the high homogeneity of S1a and S1b repeat sequences within each genome and species. The genomic content of S1 satellite DNA was lower in the Greek than in the Italian populations (0.5 vs. 1.9%) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed the S1 satellite on only 4 chromosome pairs in the Greek taxon and on all 13 chromosome pairs in the Italian taxon. The completely different structure and genomic organization of the S1 satellite DNA indicate that the Greek and Italian taxa are distinct species: R. graeca and R. italica.Key words: satellite DNA, DNA sequence, Southern blot, FISH, Rana.

The population of Campobasso Province shows a level of inbreeding that is distinct from most Italian rural populations, regardless of their geographic location (Fr=0·0040; Fn=0·0102; Ft=0·0142). The genetic structure of the Italian–Greek communities of Lecce and Reggio Calabria Provinces does not appear to be affected by ethnicity. The level of inbreeding in Italian–Greeks of Reggio Calabria Province is similar to other Italians of Campobasso Province (Fr=0·0041; Fn=0·0127; Ft=0·0168). The Italian–Greeks of Lecce Province show random mating, and their inbreeding is in fact very low (Fr=0·0038; Fn=0·0024; Ft=0·0062).

This article explores the music education of the Greek people in the nineteenth century, as revealed through the description of music education in Constantinople, Corfu and Athens. Before the establishment of the new state of Greece early in the nineteenth century, both Greeks and Europeans speak of ‘Greece’, referring to Greek communities beyond its borders. Music education in those communities consisted mainly of the music of the Greek Orthodox Church – applying a special notation, appropriate to its monophonic, unaccompanied chant – and Western music, and was characterized by the degree to which either culture prevailed. The antithesis of those music cultures was best represented, at least up to the 1850s, among the Greeks living in Constantinople – the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church – and Corfu of the Ionian Islands – where Italian music was assimilated. Athens was elected in 1834 as the capital of the Greek state because of its ancient monuments and did not attain the significance of a contemporary cultural centre before the 1870s. In Athens, these two musical cultures were absorbed and transformed through their confrontation and interaction. However, the new state's political orientation determined the predominance of Western music in music education in the capital.

The centerpiece of Oliver Taplin's recent monograph on Greek drama and South Italian vase-painting is an Apulian bell-krater of the early fourth century in a New York private collection (Plate IV). The vase belongs to the genre conventionally known as phlyax vases, though Taplin would reject that label, since it is the thesis of his book that many, if not most, of these vases reflect Athenian Old Comedy and not an indigenous Italic entertainment, the phlyax play.

Résumé :
In a period of recession as the one we are experiencing, the requests of the civil society are often addressed to the achievement of wealth and results palpable on the short-run. Consequently, other aspects are often not considered compelling. This is the case for measures taken for the protection of the environment: we think there are much more important matters that need to be considered first, as if it was an issue with lesser relevance. This is the reason why the work focuses on the Green Economy. More specifically, it focuses on the idea of Green New Deal, proving how green investments are instruments that protect the environment and, at the same time, overcome the crisis. Being the Green Economy a science “in-the making”, the works starts by trying to give a definition of it, first through some of the green thought founders’ ideas – Robertson, Schumacher, Henderson, Boulding – then using more recent definitions. Next, it is analysed the concept of “Green New Deal”, which as stated before, is the core of the work. Particularly, it is stressed the idea of Green New Deal for Europe. In the second chapter, there is an analysis of the economic tools that the European Union makes available for the development of environmental projects. This has been considered an important topic to develop, since the opportunities that the European Union offers are often ignored, and, as a consequence, it is frequently perceived as a distant institution, an institution that does nothing but give rules instead of helping its citizens. Finally, it has been analysed what Green New Deal means for Italy in terms of economic and environmental health. Moreover, in this final section, examples of companies, located in the Veneto Region, that have benefited of the tools provided by the European Union have been analysed as an empirical proof of the benefits of a green conversion for our country.

Girardon, Sheila Patricia. « Italic votive terracotta heads from the British Museum : a stylistic appraisal in their religious and historical settings ». Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1994. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349436/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The thesis aims to examine a collection of Italic votive terracotta heads, dated between the early 4th and the late 2nd centuries B.C., in the British Museum. The study proposes a stylistic appraisal of the terracotta heads in their religious and historical settings divided into three parts. The first part includes the introduction and five chapters. In the first chapter is discussed the religious background: Greek healing gods) Italic and Roman healing cults and Aesculapios. The second chapter is concerned with the religiousness of the Italic peoples: their devoutness; the cults; the practice of the caput velatum. Chapter three deals with the notion of votive offering in the ancient world: the origin; in the Greek religious sphere; the votive offerings as an exchange, as substitution, as gifts; their place in the sanctuary; in the Italic religious sphere and their distribution on the Italian territory; the specialisation of sanctuaries; the anatomical ex-votos; miniaturisation of votives as substitution; fertility, puberty and well-being. Chapter four deals with ancient medicine and the anatomical votives: the dawn of medical science; the evidence of the anatomical votives; medical interpretation of the votives; representation of diseased organs. In chapter five are considered the sanctuary and the worshippers: the types of sanctuaries; the identification and location of sanctuaries; the evidence for healing cults; the votive deposits; the appearance and disappearance of anatomical votive terracottas; the historical background. The second part includes three chapters. Chapters ix considers the various stylistic influences: in pre-Roman Etruria; in central and southern Italy; the Roman influence; copies of famous sculptures and their relationship with votive terracottas. Chapter seven is a survey of the jewellery displayed on the female heads: crowns; diadems; earrings; necklaces. Chapter eight is a survey of the hairstyles displayed on both female and male heads. Chapter nine examines the technique of manufacture of the votive heads: the problems of mass-production; the workshops and the artisans; the specific, heads in the British Museum. The third part of this study includes an extensive catalogue of the female and male heads divided into groups according to their stylistic affinities. The catalogue is introduced by a section on the classification and terminology. The thesis is concluded by a synopsis of the focal points of part one and two integrated by the observations on the groups of heads in the catalogue.

Seffer, Valentina. « Identity on the Threshold : The Myth of Persephone in Italian American Women’s Memoirs ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13957.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This dissertation analyses the recurrent theme of the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone in third-generation Italian American women’s memoirs. I argue that these women appropriate their Italian ethnic roots through a creative and compelling rereading and reworking of the myth of Demeter and Persephone. To develop my argument, I explore the interlacing of myth and memory in three contemporary Italian American memoirs: No Pictures in my Grave: A Spiritual Journey in Sicily (1992), The Skin between Us: A Memoir of Race, Beauty, and Belonging (2006), and The Anarchist Bastard: Growing Up Italian in America (2011), respectively written by Susan Caperna Lloyd, Kym Ragusa, and Joanna Clapps Herman. These texts belong to the hybrid genre of memoir; a genre that combines imagination with individual and collective memory. Through the genre of memoir and the practice of self-writing, these authors turn to the myth as a source for female empowerment and ethnic assertion. The myth of Persephone in these Italian American women’s memoirs epitomizes the archetype of origin so it becomes a treasure to be sought and rediscovered. These texts offer insightful perspective on myth while also posing questions of difference, gender, race, ethnicity, self-representation, and post-modern identity. Through an eclectic approach, including literary criticism, cultural studies, and anthropology, I argue that these three memoirs show how the authors’ physical and/or psychological journeys between Italy and America have helped them to overcome the anxieties experienced in relation to their Italian American hybrid identity. This thesis explores the themes of liminality, ethnicity, race, and hybridity to understand how the Persephone myth is used by the authors to articulate their condition as dwellers of the limen, and to help them come to terms with the trauma of loss, separation, and reunion.

FABIANI, MARCO. « Bamboo structures : italian culms as likely resource for green buildings ».

In this thesis the results of compression, tensile and bending tests on Italian bamboo culms are discussed. The analyzed bamboo are of two species, namely Phyllostachys Edulis (MOSO) and Phyllostachys Viridiglaucescens. These tests are carried out following the rules of ISO 22156 and ISO 22157. The characteristics values of the compressive and flexural strength of Italian bamboo culms are determined. A new and versatile connector for bamboo structures is developed and tested to evaluate its effectiveness. This connector is realized by wood parts and screws and it is appropriate for constructing trusses and space frames. The use of the screws to connect wood and bamboo is due to two main aspects. First, the screws are easy to use and no particular skill is needed. Second, no splitting arises along the culm since a preliminary drilling is needed to introduce the screw. In the second part of the thesis, the linear buckling problem of non-uniform columns is treated. Firstly, a brief overview of the history of the linear buckling is described. Since bamboo culms present non-uniform flexural stiffness along the length, an approach to evaluate the approximate analytical solution of the governing equation is presented. This method can calculate the critical load in a simple way, directly accessible to the designers. The proposed method gives a closed-form estimate of the bamboo column deflection, subjected to an eccentric axial load and initial curvature (crookedness).

Résumé :
This study aims to investigate if there is a specific grammar for proper names, in particular in the field of morphology, or more precisely, in nominal derivation. We will concentrate on a class of derived nouns in a language with an open corpus, i.e. Italian (from now on It.), and in a language with a closed corpus, i.e. Ancient Greek (from now on AG). At stake here are the nouns formed from proper names with the suffixes -ismo/‑ista in Italian and respectively with ‑ismós/‑istḗs in AG. In both languages, these suffixes are highly productive (see below Section 3). Furthermore, they combine not only with proper names but also with common nouns, adjectives and other lexical categories.

Résumé :
Water and salts have long been the main factors of deterioration in building materials. This thesis studies the weathering resistance of limestone as a building material under salt crystallization conditions. Specimens selected were Alfas stone and Lecce stone, respectively from Greece and Italy. Through several analytical techniques (capillary absorption test, salt crystallization test, X-ray diffraction, Calcimetry, Ion chromatography and Mercury intrusion porosimetry), the properties of the stones were analyzed. The original characteristics, such as chemical composition, pore size and distribution were studied for revealing their roles on weathering behavior under salt crystallization. By comparing and studying these different properties of stones, we can better understand the importance of those characteristics on weathering results.

Résumé :
AbstractSeveral analyses and reports on sustainable design are pointing worldwide in the direction of what is known as the ‘Green Building’ approach: an integrated, multi-sectoral approach to the implementation of improvements that aim to increase levels of well-being, social inclusion and long-lasting development in cities, on the basis of most urgent aspects of environmental quality, efficiency and circularity of resources, in a climate change scenario. In Italy, in 2017, the ‘Future City Manifesto’ was launched as part of the initiatives of the Italian General States of the Green Economy in Architecture, aiming at mainstreaming the Green Building approach within the international Green City Network. The objective of this chapter is to present and discuss recent initiatives in the field of sustainable architecture and green economy in Italy, pointing at innovative processes, strategies, methods and tools in a Green Building approach, suitable to activate policy actions and foster significant results as regards future green growth and urban development.

Résumé :
This article aims to show how Dante Alighieri was ‘used’ in Renaissance Polish literature. Dante was known by Polish intellectuals first of all as a political theorist. Only in the second half of the 14th century did Polish writers start to refer to him as a great poet (Długosz). However, Dante was rather known than read and ‘used’ as a topic character to demonstrate the excellence of vernacular poetry. Andrzej Trzecieski the Younger, in fact, wrote in a couple of epigrams to his friend Mikołaj Rej, that Rej is to Polish literature, what Dante (and Petrarch) was to Italian literature; in addition to this, Trzecieski underlines, through intertextual allusions, that Dante (and Rej) had the same dignity of ancient Greek and Latin poets. This attitude that vernacular literature is on par with Greek and ancient literature is found also in the elegy III 8 by Jan Kochanowski, where Ronsard is presented as a “classic” poet. The final part of this work compares the situation in 15th and 16th-century Italian and Polish literature in terms of the relationship between ancient and vernacular poetry.

Résumé :
In the last decades, the research has directed its efforts and resources paper is to investigate towards the possibility to incorporate wave energy converters, into the traditional maritime breakwaters to combine classical use with new opportunities and developments (for example, the Green Ports). Since the nineties, the OWC (Oscillating Water Column) plants were developed at full scale to produce electrical power from ocean waves. For instance, a new plant was built in Mutriku (Spain) recently. A new kind of OWC caisson, named U-OWC or REWEC3, which has the advantage to obtain an impressive natural resonance without any device for phase control, has been patented by Boccotti [1]. This new U-OWC device gives performances better than those of a conventional OWC either with small wind waves or with high waves [2,3,4]. The properties of the REWEC3 have been verified with two small-scale field experiments carried out in the natural ocean engineering laboratory NOEL of Reggio Calabria off the eastern coast of the Sicily Channel [5–7]. The aim of the present two sites along Italian coasts for possible installations of REWEC3 devices: i) the port of Civitavecchia (Rome, Italy)in the Tyrrhenian sea; ii) the port of Pantelleria, in the Sicily Channel.

Résumé :
This paper aims to analyze the attitude and the awareness of environmental sustainability issues within diverse Italian industrial companies. A survey has involved a balanced sample of companies operating in different industrial sectors. Considering the survey’s results it can be concluded that: (i) environmental sustainability is an opportunity and a current market requirement, (ii) environmental sustainability is not formalized, since specific methods and tools are not used in technical departments, and (iii) environmental decisions are mainly made by specific key figures (i.e. energy/environmental manager). This analysis can be considered as a useful starting point for the framework formalization of eco-design approaches and tools able to bring eco-design principles into the work of technical departments with the aim to foster the future development of green and sustainable products and services.
