Eksi, Emrah. « The impact of the market risk of capital regulations on bank activities ». Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7837.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Banking has a unique role in the well-being of an economy. This role makes banks one of the most heavily regulated and supervised industries. In order to strengthen the soundness and stability of banking systems, regulators require banks to hold adequate capital. While credit risk was the only risk that was covered by the original Basle Accord, with the 1996 amendment, banks have also been required to assign capital for their market risk starting from 1998. In this research, the impact of the market risk capital regulations on bank capital levels and derivative activities is investigated. In addition, this study also evaluates the impact of using different approaches that are allowed to be used while calculating the required market risk capital, as well as the accuracy of VaR models. The implementation of the market risk capital regulations can influence banks either by increasing their capital or by decreasing their trading activities and in particular trading derivative activities. The literature review concerning capital regulations illustrates that in particular the impact of these regulations on bank capital levels and derivative activities is an issue that has not yet been explored. In order to fill this gap, the changes in capital and derivatives usage ratios are modelled by using a partial adjustment framework. The main results of this analysis suggest that the implementation of the market risk capital regulations has a significant and positive impact on the risk-based capital ratios of BHCs. However, the results do not indicate any impact of these regulations on derivative activities. The empirical findings also demonstrate that there is no significant relationship between capital and derivatives. The market risk capital regulations allow the use of either a standardised approach or the VaR methodologies to determine the required capital amounts to cover market risk. In order to evaluate these approaches, firstly differences on bank VaR practices are investigated by employing a documentary analysis. The documentary analysis is conducted to demonstrate the differences in bank VaR practices by comparing the VaR models of 25 international banks. The survey results demonstrate that there, is no industry consensus on the methodology for calculating VaR. This analysis also indicates that the assumptions in estimating VaR models vary considerably among financial institutions. Therefore, it is very difficult for financial market participants to make comparisons across institutions by considering single VaR values. Secondly, the required capital amounts are calculated for two hypothetical foreign exchange portfolios by using both the standardised and three different VaR methodologies, and then these capital amounts are compared. These simulations are conducted to understand to what extent the market risk capital regulations approaches produce different outcomes on the capital levels. The results indicate that the VaR estimates are dependent upon the VaR methodology. Thirdly, three backtesting methodologies are applied to the VaR models. The results indicate that a VaR model that provides accurate estimates for a specific portfolio could fail when the portfolio composition changes. The results of the simulations indicate that the market risk capital regulations do not provide a `level playing field' for banks that are subject to these regulations. In addition, giving an option to banks to determine the VaR methodology could create a moral hazard problem as banks may choose an inaccurate model that provides less required capital amounts.

Crosbie, John Patrick G. « Value of outdoor education for people with disabilities : an in-depth case study of the Calvert Trust ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9443.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The United Kingdom has a long history of using outdoor activities as a vehicle for recreation, rehabilitation and education for people with disabilities. However, there has been little empirical research into the value placed on the experiences by those who organise the activities or by the participants. The Calvert Trust was one of the first organisations to specialise in outdoor activities for this population and through their three Centres is currently the largest provider of outdoor education for people with disabilities within the UK. Through four separate but linked research phases covering data collected between 2002 and 2013, the present study investigates the value of Calvert Trust programmes for both organisers and participants. The first phase involved the analysis of an existing data-set of post-course evaluation questionnaires (n=502) completed by visiting leaders of groups of participants (n=2,843) with a variety of disabilities who had attended one of the three Calvert Trust Centres. The activities and factors contributing to the perceived benefits of participation were identified, and visiting leader evaluations were compared with the internal reports on the same courses and participant groups completed by Centre instructors (n=702). There were differences in aims for the visits dependent on the sector of the respondent (education, recreation or rehabilitation) but an increase in confidence and independence were those most frequently reported outcomes across sectors. There was general agreement between visiting leaders and instructors as to the role of challenge, achievement and teamwork in delivering these benefits. The limitations of having respondents from only one Centre were addressed in the second phase of the research. This investigated post-course evaluation questionnaires from all three Centres returned both by visiting leaders (n=397) and participants (n=2,507). Comparisons were made across the Centres and differences were found to exist in the aims and domestic aspects of the provision reported on by the visiting leaders but not in aspects of the activity delivery. The participants, however, showed small but significant differences across the Centres in their reporting of development of communication skills, social skills, self-esteem and independence. A third research phase employed iterative email interviews with representatives from visiting organisations (n=17) and the Calvert Trust (n=17) to relate participant experiences to the aims of both the purchasers and providers. Both sets of informants saw participant recognition of personal ability as a key aim of the visit. Other frequently reported aims were to provide new social opportunities, develop interpersonal skills and increase confidence, but these had different relative weightings across informants. In the fourth phase of the research the direct voices of the participants on the value of their outdoor experiences was accessed through interviews with participants (n=23) and with a ‘significant other’ (n=18). Differences in the reporting of personal experiences were noted between those with physical and intellectual disabilities. A number of those with physical disabilities, and/or their ‘significant others’, considered that the outdoor education experience had made an important difference to the participant’s life that might have a long-lasting impact. Those with intellectual disabilities reported a positive experience that may have given them the confidence to take part in similar events, undertake more exercise or widen their social circle. A post-visit increase in independence was reported by a number of the ‘significant others’ for this latter group. The findings overall suggest that participation in the outdoor education courses at the Calvert Trust was generally a very positive experience, with outcomes valued by purchasers, by participants and by those with close knowledge of them. The principal reported benefits relate to themes of confidence, independence and realisation of personal ability. These are discussed in relation to the specific outdoor education programmes experienced and the impact that these may have on the everyday lives of participants with disabilities.

Résumé :
Problem: What are the most critical activities for process industry? Whether general view of impact of these value chain activities on product performance (quality, cost and innovation) applied to process industry? How do those activities impact to product performances? If they cannot affect product performance, what could be the reason behind it?   Purpose: This paper aims to conclude general view of impact of value chain activities on product performances (quality, cost and innovation). Accordingly we would create a conceptual model. And then test whether this model applies for process industry and further more figure out the reason behind through case study.   Methodology: In this paper, qualitative research is our approach. We choose single case study as research strategy and conduct three interviews. Documentation and interview data are collected and analyzed to provide theoretical framework and empirical evidence for the whole paper.     Result: Based on case study, and previous work, the model concerning impact of major activities for process industry (Marketing sales, Human Resource and Supplier management) on product performances (Quality, Cost and Innovation) is derived. This model contains answers to nine hypotheses assumed in theoretical part, giving reader a new and easy way to understand process industry.        Conclusions: Distinguished from other industry, process industry with its own unique characteristics does not lend support to all nine hypotheses. Fundamental analysis proved that some assumptions do not establish for process industry while the others may have more significant relationships. To be specific, there exists strong impact of human resource on product quality and cost, supplier management on product cost and also marketing and sales on product quality. But, to our surprise, the other assumed relationships are not that significant while product innovation has adverse affect on marketing and sales.

Tasic, Ivan. « Impact of retailer's promotional activities on customer traffic ». Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/5880.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The usual theoretical assumption that the retailer's promotional activities serve the purpose of attracting customers into stores lacks empirical verification. The relationship between promotional activity and customer count is examined empirically in just a few studies, and no significantly positive association is found. This dissertation is a comprehensive empirical study of a unique time series cross section dataset, which contains scanner data representing 28 product categories in a large supermarket chain over two and a half year long period. The main result of this dissertation is that retailer's promotional activities are positively related to customer count. Two constructed measures of the promotional activity have a positive significant effect on store traffic that is comparable with the customer count effect of an average holiday. Some 55 percent of the positive long-run promotional activity effect is felt immediately, and the remaining 45 percent is spread over a five week long period. The promotions have prolonged effects that last until the next promotional peak -€“ the next holiday. It is also found that promotional discounts have positive and significant effect on store profit.

Kramer, Christoper. « Foreign subsidiaries in Brazil : location determinants for high value-added activities ». Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2015. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/593736/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis explores the location determinants for high value-added activities (HVAAs) carried out by foreign-owned subsidiaries in Brazil. It adopts an extended version of Dunning's (2000) envelope paradigm to integrate different location factors, extracted from a wide range of location theories and frameworks that have been identified in the field of international business. The thesis is original in its conceptualisation of the degree of value added in separate activity sets in terms of complexity, which is widely recognised as a barrier to imitation of unique and valuable activities in strategic management literature. This thesis studies four activity sets (R&D, manufacturing, supply, and marketing) and analyses different facets of the host-country environment. By adopting such a disaggregate stance it accounts for the fact that different activity sets are attracted to different location factors. Based on a large-scale telephone survey, a bespoke database of foreign-owned subsidiaries in Brazil was created. This unique database holds the most complete and up-to-date data of foreign subsidiaries in this emerging market. Such an approach minimises some limitations of prior research, such as home country bias. Likewise, in using Brazil as analytical setting, this study also extends the geographical reach of the subsidiary roles research to an emerging economy context. The results indicate that the local environment of the foreign subsidiary has a rather limited effect on the degree of value added within its activity sets, pointing towards less advanced location advantages in emerging markets for HVAAs of foreign subsidiaries if compared to developed countries. Yet, location factors seem to be relevant for the extent of activity sets. In general, this thesis confirms the view that different activities are drawn towards different aspects of the host environment. As regards policy implications, only very limited means are available to a host location to influence the likelihood of HVAAs at foreign subsidiaries through adjusting the profile of the local environment. Overall, policy makers need to be clear on which activity sets they intend to target, as the impact of location factors varies by activity set. Headquarters managers may be well advised to locate HVAAs in developed countries, which are more likely to offer those location factors that matter the most. Subsidiary managers may want to focus on internal sources of knowledge to unfold the potential of their unit.

Hoshi, Larsson Martin. « The role of context, activities, and organization, in Value-Based Procurement ». Licentiate thesis, Linköpings universitet, Industriell ekonomi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-150959.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis explores the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy. A procurement strategy is value-based when it facilitates procurement to develop attractive value propositions for both suppliers and internal stakeholders. The procurement function, including its activities and organization, and the collaboration with suppliers, are shaped to achieve this goal. SAAB, a Swedish military fighter airplane manufacturer, has been driven to adopt such a strategy by its surrounding context and market position, which demand that SAAB find new ways to attract key suppliers. SAAB responded to this demand by offering suppliers alternative benefits in terms of, for example, knowledge, intelligence, standardization, co-marketing, and prioritization. SAAB offers the empirical opportunity taken by this thesis to explore Value-Based Procurement. A theoretical framework built on literature on procurement in terms of procurement context, procurement activities, and procurement organization informs this study. The framework also encompasses literature on value and value propositions. A value perspective describes well both how SAAB’s procurement function has been shaped, and the work that the procurement department does. Nearly thirty hours of interviews with people of different roles within the procurement organization of SAAB and a workshop involving multiple key informants form the empirical base for this explorative, qualitative, single-case study. A thick empirical description of SAAB’s Strategic Sourcing department and its work allows the reader to assess generalizability. The analysis building thereon results in nineteen propositions for how the adoption of a Value- Based Procurement Strategy has implications for procurement activities and organization. This study contributes in several ways to research. It recounts an in-depth revelatory case of the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy and a customer taking a leading role in developing value propositions for suppliers and itself, thus providing insight into an unexplored area. The procurement context encourages the adoption of a Value-Based Procurement Strategy and plays a role in determining what is valuable to suppliers. The procurement activities and procurement organization play enabling roles in successfully implementing Value-Based Procurement, and act as drivers of value proposed to suppliers. Value propositions are tools for developing procurement strategy and for execution thereof through procurement. This thesis also deepens the understanding of value by promoting a parallel view of co-developed customer and supplier value. Finally, it contributes to procurement literature by showing that the buying side has value propositions to make. This thesis contributes to managers by illustrating how a Value- Based Procurement Strategy can be adopted, and possible reasons why it should. It also proposes “value actions” as possible Value-Based Procurement Strategy improvement efforts.

In an era where the network of interconnected devices is rapidly expanding, it is difficult for organizations to adapt to the increasingly data-rich and dynamic environment while remaining competitive. Employees experience that much of their time and resources is spent daily on repetitive, inefficient and mundane tasks. Whereas lean manufacturing has manifested itself as a well-known optimization concept, lean information management and the removal of waste is not yet being used to its full potential as its direct value is less visible. A case study was conducted to define which types of non-value adding activities can be identified within information flows and to determine whether decentralized application development can eliminate this digital waste. An internal information flow was modelled, analyzed and optimized by developing customized applications on the Microsoft Power Platform. Based on literature from the field of manufacturing and software development, a framework was developed to categorize digital waste as well as higher order root causes in terms of business strategy and IT infrastructure. While decentralized app development provides the ability to significantly reduce operational digital waste in a simplified manner, it can also enable unnecessary expansion of a common data model and requires application lifecycle management efforts as well as edge security to ensure data compliance and governance. Although limited to one case study, the suggested framework could give insights to organizations that aim to optimize internal workflows by identifying and eliminating digital waste and its root causes.

Salas-Vega, Sebastian. « Cancer medicines : clinical impact, economics, and value ». Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2017. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3647/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Background and Importance: There has been much debate recently over rapidly growing drug expenditures. Cancer medicines, in particular, have driven new brand spending over recent years, and US oncological expenditures have risen faster than for many other disease areas, in part because of rapidly growing drug prices, as well as increased rates of use. Objective: In the face of ongoing debates on how to reasonably control growth in pharmaceutical spending, while also providing patients with the best possible care, this thesis sets out to help address the question of whether growing pharmaceutical expenditures are providing value-for-money to patients and society. Novelty and Empirical Contributions: This thesis is based in part on a systematic review with narrative synthesis of English-language HTA appraisals of the comparative clinical risks and benefits of new cancer medicines, as well as on the novel use of methods to generate comparative evidence on their use and cost. Adapting established methods, these data are then used to examine existing questions over whether growing expenditures are worth the cost to patients and society. This thesis makes five major contributions to the literature on value-based spending on cancer medicines: 1) approximately one in three newly licensed cancer medicines provide no known overall survival benefit, while one in five provide no known overall survival, quality of life, or safety benefit; 2) novel use of methodologies to model treatment course and duration reveals that cancer drug use and costs vary greatly between individual medicines, and across Australia, France, the UK, and the US; 3) the monetized value of survival gains attributable to cancer drug innovation, net of growth in cancer drug spending, varies across individual medicines, and, at a country-level, remains unambiguously positive in Australia, France, and the UK, but negative in the US; 4) spending on new cancer medicines is often only weakly associated with their clinical benefits; and 5) the strength of this association nevertheless varies across countries, with the UK demonstrating the strongest evidence of value-based spending on new cancer medicines. Clinical and Policy Implications: Findings from this thesis provide a resource for valuebased clinical decision-making by patients and physicians. Moreover, growing expenditures on cancer medicines may only weakly be associated with meaningful clinical benefits, though the extent to which this is true differs across countries. These findings highlight the important role that health policy can have in encouraging valuebased cancer drug spending. In particular, it is argued that managed access schemes promoting access and evidence development, as well as the use of value-based spending policies, can help expedite access to new treatments, incentivize the development of clinically meaningful medicines, and rationalize growing cancer drug expenditures. Future Research Directions: The comparative clinical risks and benefits from new cancer medicines using real-world data, and how they compare with trial-based results; how evidence on the comparative impact from new treatments is measured, weighted, and rewarded in decision-making by regulators and payers; and how it is effectively linked through policy and regulation to cancer drug spending.

Uba, Okwuchukwu Gerald. « Determining the Property Value Impact of Landfills ». PDXScholar, 1994. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4751.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The decline in property value can be due to owner's act or exogenous act from the operation of landfills. Landfill neighbors, especially home owners, perceive landfill operation to pose environmental safety problem such as ground water contamination and methane gas leakage that could affect home value. Owners of landfills, especially those landfills that accept only dry waste (limited purpose landfill), claim that since their facilities meet the requirements of environmental regulations and the type of waste they accept could not possibly produce methane gas and leachate there is no property value impact of their facilities. Several studies have shown that landfills do not have impact on property value. However, one recent study found that a large regional landfill have impact on property value. The property value impact of a limited purpose landfill located in Portland, Oregon, was investigated in this study. Data were gathered for homes in approximately one half mile radius around the landfill for the periods before the landfill opened, during operation, and after closure. Hedonic estimation technique incorporated in a multiple linear regression was used to control for a key variable (proximity or distance between the landfill and homes) and examine the relationship of this variable and sale price of homes. The results show that distance of homes (the proxy for perception) from the landfill was positively related and statistically significant with sale prices of homes during the period the landfill was in operation. Distance of homes sold in the periods the landfill was not in existence or operation was not positively related nor statistically significant with sale prices. That is, the operational effects of the landfill was capitalized into property value. With this result, the issue of whether neighbors of landfills should be compensated deserve more attention. The results of this study would be very helpful in negotiating compensation. The results also show that if adequate pollution mitigation measures are in place landfill zoning ordinance should be based on the fact that landfill sites would yield maximum economic benefit to the owner after closure.

Ilic, Peter. « The impact of mobile phones on collaborative learning activities ». Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15697.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In light of the ubiquitous nature of mobile communications technology, society is forced to rethink education. When considering the freedom of communication in terms of time and space that this mobile technology provides, educators need to understand how this ever present communications platform can be exploited to enhance collaborative learning. The central theme of this thesis is the role of mobile phones as a support for collaborative learning both in and out of the classroom. The questions asked are: What is the distinctive affordance offered by the mobile phone for collaborative learning? What is the affective relationship between student, mobile phone and homework? Does the intervention affect the relationship between students, their mobile phones and their homework? Does the affordance offered by the technology lead to more awareness of learning? What is the nature of the dialogue with the mobile phone technology? In this thesis, the methodology is designed to explore the area of collaborative learning and the use of mobile phones as a support for collaborative learning through critical reviews of the literature and a year-long exploratory multiple case study integrating both qualitative data analysis and quantitative data analysis. Qualitative exploratory interviews and surveys are combined with extensive quantitative internet log data to provide a detailed image of students’ mobile use during collaborative activities. The results are triangulated, and In light of current research key issues are interpreted and discussed. The findings of the study support four key hypotheses which emerge from the theoretical framework. First, that there are distinctive affordances offered by the mobile phone for collaborative learning that increase learning opportunities. Second, that the affective relationship between students and their mobile phone has a positive influence on attitudes towards homework when the homework involves the use of their mobile phones. Third, that the intervention affected the relationship between students their mobile phone and their homework by reducing barriers between private and public spaces. Fourth, the affordances offered by the technology led to more awareness of content through an increase in opportunities for reflection. In addition, some insights into the nature of the dialogue with the mobile phone technology are explored. These findings have implications for educational theory and practice since they provide evidence to support the incorporation of mobile devices into collaborative educational situations. This research will be of interest to those concerned with the impact of mobile devices on the area of collaborative learning specifically and the field of education in general. The contribution that this research brings to scholarship and to the educational community is an increased understanding of the ways that ubiquitous mobile technology can affect a student’s mobile-based collaborative learning experience. The integration of these findings into the current body of knowledge may lead to improvements in future educational design and highlight areas which require further research.

Résumé :
This research paper aims to investigate if the incorporation of students’ extramural English (EE) activities, such as watching movies or playing computer games, into the English classroom affect their motivation. This research was inspired by The School Inspectorate’s (Skolinspektionen, 2011) conclusion that too many Swedish students find English lessons un-motivating as well as boring. Partly to blame for this problem is the lack of perceived authenticity in the English classroom when compared to the activities that the students are engaged in outside of school (EE). Since this gap between school English and out-of-school English is creating un-motivated students in the classroom, this paper aims to describe learner motivation towards the English language, and whether incorporating students EE activities can increase their motivation. This is done with the support of different theories of motivation as well as the current globalized landscape, with English being considered a global language. One teacher and 25 of her students were interviewed to hear their thoughts on whether the incorporation of extramural English activities into the classroom would increase motivation. The study came to the conclusion that students wanted to learn English in order to become participants in the globalized world. Also, both teacher and students wanted to incorporate extramural English activities into the classroom and stated that this would increase their motivation in school. However, they also explained that it had to be incorporated, or ‘schoolified’, in a way that increased the students’ knowledge and proficiency, and was in line with the curriculum and its knowledge requirements.

Résumé :
This research paper explores the value co-creating activities from a micro-level healthcare perspective by investigating value co-creation in dental clinics. Previous research on the subject of co-creation of value has directed its focus to higher-level healthcare with advanced illnesses, chronic diseases and complicated processes with many interactions. This research paper expands the theoretical research and provides valuable practical insight for dental clinics by adding a perspective where there is a low level of interaction. Through interviews with dentists and a focus group discussion with patients it is concluded that the co-creating activities of: cooperating, colearning, collating information, integrating networks, providing options, and designing environments, are present on the micro-level healthcare. Furthermore, contrary to existing literature, it is concluded that the co-creation is commonly instigated by the dentist rather than the patient, and that the value co-creation can also be active on a psychological level, and not solely through physical interactions and activities.

Résumé :
This research applies the concepts of lean production in the Indonesian construction industry to assist managers identifying the incidence of waste. The concept implies the use of fewer resources in production systems leading to "Lean Production". The original concept of lean production came from the manufacturing industry. So far, in construction, lean production is little known, but several researchers and companies have started to explore applications of the concept oflean production to construction. The concept of lean production recognises two types of activities in a production system: conversion activities which add value to the material or piece of information being transformed into a product and flows (inspection, waiting, moving), through which the conversion activities are bound together but which do not add value. In construction, management attention has been focused on the conversion process and little attention on flow activities, leading to uncertain flow processes, expansion of non value-adding activities, and reduction of output value. Hence, the primary goal of lean production is to avoid or minimise the share of non value-adding activities, known as waste. The limited research on non value-adding activities carried out to date in Indonesia has been concerned only with materials on-site, and mostly confined to a broad assessment of the effect of waste. In fact, in its widest context, waste may be regarded as the squandering of resources. Hence, this investigation ultimately aims to assist in the elimination or substantial reduction of waste, particularly in Indonesia. Fifty-three variables that related to non value-adding activities were derived from intensive literature review and pilot studies. The variables were then separated into 2 classifications: waste variables (22 variables) that contributed to a reduction in the value of construction productivity and waste causes variables (31 variables) that could be defined as factors producing waste. The same categories of variables in each classification were then clustered into the same group. Waste variables are grouped into 5 categories Repair, Waiting Periods, Materials, Human Resource and Operations. Waste causes variables are grouped into 6 categories - People, Professional Management, Design and Documentation, Materials, Execution and External. The research approach adopted for this investigation was primarily quantitative with the development of a survey questionnaire involving personal interviews, meeting industry and academic leaders, pilot studies and focus group discussions. Cooperation was established with two Indonesian academic institutions - Tarumanagara University and University of Indonesia; and other institutions such as: Department of Public Works; Indonesian Contractors Association (AKI); and National Contractors Association of Indonesia (GAPENSI). Three hundred questionnaire forms were distributed to 125 contractor firms in five large cities in Indonesia. Ninety-nine questionnaires from 46 different contractors were returned representing a response rate of nearly 40%. Two main statistical analyses were carried out. Multiple linear regression was used to identify the different perceptions of respondents towards waste and t-tests were conducted to rank the importance of waste types and the causes of waste. The findings of this research generally indicated that the elements of lean production in the Indonesian construction industry were little known. The different perceptions of respondents towards waste were summarised based on frequency (how frequently the waste occur) and effect (how significant the effect has on-site). The t-tests results confirmed that the 8 most important waste variables were: • Delays to schedule, • Repairs on finishing works, • Damaged materials on site, • Loss of materials on site, • Material not meeting specifications, • Waiting for equipment to arrive, • Waiting for equipment repair, and • Equipment break downs. In addition, 7 factors emerged as most relevant in causing waste: • Design changes, • Slow decisions making, • Lack of trades' skill, • Inappropriate construction methods, • Poor coordination among project participants, • Delays of material delivery to site, and • Poor planning and scheduling. A conceptual model of influence variables of non value-adding activities was developed. The model was developed to provide information for construction managers in order to identify the significant variables of non value-adding activities and the three major factors that influence non value-adding activities when they occurred.

The purpose of this study was to determine what factors in clinical performance can negatively impact Medicare reimbursement for acute-care hospitals. Secondary data from Medicare.gov Hospital Compare website was used, specifically using results from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), communication with doctors, communication with nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, communication about medications, cleanliness of hospital, and quietness at night of hospital. The goal is to receive a response of "Always" to receive Medicare reimbursement.

A comparative analysis was used to compare the survey results from 194 acute-care hospitals among nine California counties. San Diego County had a consistent "Always" response in all 10 HCAHPS categories. One limitation was the inability to correlate total population with high or low HCAHPS scores. For further study, selecting specific demographics of each county to determine who is more likely to complete an HCAHPS survey.

Résumé :

This research study examined the academic impact of extracurricular activities on middle school students. This study investigated a possible relationship between the amount of hours that students spent participating in extracurricular activities and their academic achievement, as well as the amount of hours that students spent participating in in-school extracurricular activities and their academic achievement. This study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative data to reach its results. The quantitative data ultimately did not show a statistically significant correlation between the hours that students spent in extracurricular activities in general or in in-school activities and academic achievement. However, there was an upward trend in the data for hours that students spent in extracurricular activities in general and their academic achievement. The qualitative component drew upon the prior research on traits that contribute to the success of middle school students academically, and found a pattern consistent with the evidence of these traits through the results of a survey and interviews. Therefore, the qualitative component showed that through connecting these answers to and relying on the prior research, middle school students most likely benefitted academically from being involved in extracurricular activities, especially in-school activities that met these needs. The researcher also reflected on the study and made several recommendations for future research on the topic, ranging from survey and sampling augmentations to suggestions of sub-topics worthy of further exploration.

This thesis examined the impact of residential design on children’s outdoor activities in inner-Brisbane. Examination of impact assessable development applications provided empirical data establishing the rapid decline of usable residential greenspace (URG). Children’s input through surveys indicate they participate in outdoor activities unsupervised in yards which provide busy families access to greenspace without needing to be driving or supervising. However, parental restrictions limit children’s independent mobility. Effective evaluation of public policies is required to ensure URG and safe, walkable neighbourhoods. Public awareness about the benefits of greenspace close to home and the importance of children’s independent mobility must be prioritised.

Résumé :
Much progress has been made recently in developing the business model concept. However, one issue remains poorly understood, despite its importance for managers, policy makers, and academics alike, namely, how companies change and develop their business models to achieve sustained value creation. Companies which manage to create value over extended periods of time successfully shape, adapt and renew their business models to fuel such value creation. Drawing on findings from a research program on continuously growing firms, this paper identifies three critical capabilities, namely an orientation towards experimenting with and exploiting new business opportunities; a balanced use of resources; as well as achieving coherence between leadership, culture, and employee commitment, together shaping key strategizing actions. Moreover, we illustrate how each of these capabilities is supported by different sets of specific activities. Jointly, these three capabilities, their activities and the strategizing actions act as complementarities for value creation. We conclude the paper by suggesting implications for research and practitioners, providing a tool for managers which allows them to reflect on and identify critical issues relevant for changing and developing their business model to sustain value creation.

Résumé :
The world is facing the challenge of an increasingly growing and aging population which leads to increasing requirements on the healthcare system. This has led to higher financial pressure on operational managers to do more with less resources. Hospitals are characterised by rigid routines, strict hierarchical structures and lack of consistent definitions of value which creates challenges for improvement projects and implementation. To explore an alternative perspective of how to increase value in healthcare, the concept of secondary activities is introduced. Secondary activities are defined as activities that are indirectly related to healthcare and medical processes in hospitals. Presently, secondary activities are not prioritised in healthcare since the distinction has not been made before and therefore is the value-gain interesting to investigate. The purpose of this report is to investigate how to increase value in healthcare through improved secondary activities and the following research questions are used to fulfill the purpose: What are the challenges of defining value in healthcare? 2. What process improvement strategy is suitable for improving secondary activities? 3. What implementation strategy is suitable when improving secondary activities? The method used to conduct this study consisted of a literature study covering the fields of value creation, Lean in healthcare and change management in hospital management, followed by a case study at Norrtälje Sjukhus where the food process was investigated. Results of the study showed that the challenges of defining value in healthcare are the different mindsets between professions operating in hospitals and the required balance between ethical and financial aspects. II At Norrtälje Sjukhus, the assistant nurses valued time spent with patients. In order to free more time for them, secondary activities have great potential of increasing value through improvement projects. The combination of Lean and Biodesign based on comprehensive observations proved to be a suitable process improvement strategy for improving secondary activities. Moreover, secondary activities lag well behind primary activities regarding digitalisation which can increase the value of secondary activities through improved workflows. When value is defined as time spent with patients this process improvement strategy proved to be successful. Results of improving the food process in the case study showed that the total annual savings for the hospital were 3212 work hours which corresponds to 761 244 kr. Prerequisites for a successful implementation strategy are awareness of problems, needs and to have an improvement strategy that fits the situation. Introduction of changes should made together with the personnel and be incremental to minimise disturbances to other healthcare activities. A remaining challenge is the lack of responsibility and managerial competence in the regular hospital organisation that is needed for future, continuous and sustainable improvements for secondary activities.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University
This study investigates the differential role of investor sentiment on the value relevance of book value versus earnings. I predict and find that the value relevance of book value is higher during low sentiment relative to high sentiment periods, and conversely that the value relevance of earnings is higher during high sentiment relative to low sentiment periods. These findings are consistent with investors-when optimistic-placing a higher weight on earnings, which represent an accounting proxy more indicative of future performance, whereas investors-when pessimistic-placing a higher weight on book value, which represents an accounting proxy (given historical cost conventions) that is more indicative of current value. Additional analyses suggest that this sentiment effect is more pronounced for book value components that are closely related to abandonment value, and for earnings components that have strong indication of future earnings (specifically, permanent earnings). Results are also robust to alternative measures of investor sentiment.

Résumé :
Rising rates of obesity among children have become one of the most pressing issues in modern public health. Childhood obesity threatens both the mental and physical well-being of children. Attempts to halt the rise in obesity take many forms, but one of them is the recent implementation of a programme of measurement of primary children at reception and in year 6, with results being fed back to parents. This National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is controversial and has been criticised in some quarters as unethical, in being a form of screening programme with no clear or effective interventions available for those detected as having a problem. Study aims and objectives The main aim of the study was to explore the relationship between weight status and children’s mental wellbeing, especially in the context of the NCMP. Within this overall aim, key specific objectives of the study were: i) to investigate the association between weight status of 10-11 year old school children and their mental well-being; ii) to assess the impact on the mental wellbeing of children, of participating in the NCMP; and iii) to collect information about parents’/guardians’ and children’s reaction to the NCMP, with particular interest in identifying whether parents/guardians and their children found the feedback useful in moving towards the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Methods The study was undertaken in primary schools in the catchment area of Gateshead Primary Care Trust (PCT). The overall study used a mixed methods study design. The study involved administering a questionnaire prior to NCMP measurement to a total sample of 264 children, sampled using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. One-to-one semi-structured interviews were also conducted post measurement with 21 children purposively sub-sampled from the larger group, and with 16 parents/guardians. Results Prior to measurement, most children misclassified their weight status. About 1 in 10 children who were of ideal weight perceived themselves as overweight. Over three quarters of overweight children perceived themselves to be of ideal weight. There was no significant relationship between any of the indicators of mental wellbeing and actual weight status of children. However, there was very strong evidence for a Preface xxv significant relationship between perceived weight status and mental wellbeing among children. Seven major themes emerged from the post measurement interview data, but perhaps the most intriguing was the cycle of emotional reaction of families to the NCMP and weight feedback. Discussion The reactions of parents/guardians whose children are indicated to have weight problems follow a sequence of behaviours ranging from shock, disgust with the programme, through denial and self-blame to acceptance, worry and help seeking. Reasons for these responses relate in many cases to the way the weight problem is portrayed to the parents. While health authorities are keen to portray this problem as a medical one, parents/guardians see it as social one. The roots of overeating and lack of exercise are seen as lying in the complex social and cultural milieu in which this sample of people live. Consequently, associating this problem in feedback letters with dangerous diseases like cancer, and advising parents to visit GPs to resolve child weight issues, seems inappropriate to the recipients and causes controversy and anger. Conclusion The NCMP’s routine feedback could potentially induce families into the state of readiness to change lifestyle behaviours; however, given the reactions described in this study, it seems critical to avoid placing blame on individuals but rather to acknowledge the influence of the environment surrounding families and to provide non-medical support aimed at bringing families on board to support interventions for combating child weight problems.

Résumé :
Marketing strategy has been justified by a number of criteria, including brand awareness, consumer attitudes, repeat buying and ratings of customer satisfaction; but the existing literature indicates the existence of weak relationships between these variables and sales, and almost no relationship with profitability. The 'customer perspective' of the balanced scorecard (BSC) suggests that measures of customer satisfaction might provide leading indicators with the ability to predict a firm's future financial performance; but empirical research has thus far failed to establish the existence of a consistent causal relationship between increased customer satisfaction and a firm's profitability. Similar findings cast doubt on the relationship between customer loyalty and firm profitability. Such empirical evidence is in conflict with the expectations of the service-profit chain which suggests that increases in customer satisfaction will increase customer loyalty and earn additional profits from customers. Management focus on the achievement of customer satisfaction and customer loyalty, and associated investment, might, therefore, be misguided, if they believe that the available empirical evidence supports a link between these variables and firm performance.

Résumé :
Knowledge of visitor impacts is critical for sustainable tourism management in national parks. The focus of past tourism impact research on national parks is either on bio-physical impacts (conducted as recreation ecology research) or on social impacts (human dimensions, including environmental perception and crowding). Research integrating these two dimensions has been rarely conducted. This research aims to fill this gap through the integrative approach that attempts to understand current biophysical impacts of visitor activities in a national park, and it examines how visitors perceive these impacts. The primary objectives of this dissertation are 1) to provide a synthesis of existing of bio-physical impacts of visitor activities in the Khao Yai National Park (KYNP) and 2) to examine visitors’ perception of those impacts. Also, the factors affecting visitors’ perception are analyzed. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study. Previous impact studies conducted in KYNP were reviewed. A visitor survey was conducted between December 2008 and February 2009. The questionnaires were distributed to 628 domestic and 40 international visitors. The 38 KYNP official interviews were completed. Based on previous impact research in KYNP, the most common bio-physical impacts include soil compaction, removal of humus layer, erosion, plant damage, soil and root exposure, water quality deterioration, disturbance and feeding wildlife. Other environmental impacts include noise pollution and garbage accumulation. The results indicate that more than 30 percent of visitors do not recognize the negative results of their activities. With the exception of vegetation and water impacts, overall, visitors perceive the impacts as less severe than the actual impacts. Environmental impacts are rated differently by the KYNP officials, domestic, and international visitors. Also, significant differences were found among birders, hikers, and campers. The key factors influencing impact perceptions include income level, education level, residential location, park visitation experience, length of stay in KYNP, recreation activity, frequency of activity, group type, and group size. It is suggested that both the quality and the quantity of visitor impact research are needed to construct the body of knowledge of impacts in KYNP. A long-term impact monitoring is required to sustain the ecological integrity in KYNP.

With the progress of the society, the operation of coffee chain stores is very competitive. To effect the marketing, the coffee chain industry is facing various challenges, such as how to capitalize on the promotional activities and the characteristics of the service quality. The purpose of this study is to explore the interrelationships between the promotional activities, the service quality, the perceived value and the consumer behavior. The results of the study can be reference material for the coffee chain industry. In this study, a total of 248 consumers who had purchased Starbuck were surveyed and the effective questionnaire, 99.2%, was obtained using SPSS19.0. The results of this study show that promotional activities, service quality and perceived value have significantly positive impact on consumer behavior, and perceived value is the most important factor to consumers. Based on this study on the consumers’ choice of the coffee chain stores, the experience of the enjoyment has taken the place of the previous consuming focus on the quality of coffee itself, This study suggests that the coffee chain industry improve not only the quality of service but also the atmosphere in which consumers enjoy the coffee. They will effectively enhance the consumption behavior in the coffee chain stores.

In response to the high competition and the change of customers’ value proposition, retailers have no choice but to re-adjust their business model. Retailers have to develop their own goods, services and markets that they have never offered before to bridge the competition gap and further to create more business opportunities and profits. Based on the model of Naked Market, this study attempts to examine how retailers meet customers’ need that wholesale stores and supermarkets cannot give to, from value perception, value creation, renewal, trade-off, and chain observation on the new business model’s creation and adjustment. This study found that the Naked Market tended to employ the Western-style food sales approach to solve customers’ problems—at wholesale stores customers cannot purchase small quantities of items whereas they, with a limited budget, cannot buy high-quality goods at the supermarket. The Naked Market is a convenient and hassle free one-stop shop where customers can buy all kinds of goods once and for all; it saves customers time and effort. Indeed, the first metered-food specialty store in Taiwan is a new business model which not only serves customers’ need but also provides them with a better purchasing value. In addition, it gives customers a convenient and comfortable shopping environment; meanwhile, it brings the value of zero-waste stores in Europe and America into Taiwan’s consumer market—the demand of food waste prevention and environmental protection.

This paper aims to evaluate the value of internationalized inventive activities by analyzing characteristics of patent inventions based on international collaboration, and unveil how degree of internationalization and patent characteristics can be correlated to each other. To obtain the objective of this study, a total of 4,667,855 USPTO utility patents by USPTO between 1976 and 2013 are downloaded and characterized, and subsequently the number of inventor countries as well as the number of assignee countries are compared with selected 15 patent characteristics such as Family Size, Number of Patent Reference, Number of Patent Citation Received, Number of Non-Patent Reference, Number of Claim, etc. The degree of internationalization is depend on the number of inventor countries as well as the number of assignee countries. The results show 457,296 Inventor-Assignee international patents, 188,588 Inventor international patents and 28,644 Assignee international patents granted. In addition, the degree of internationalization and patent characteristics including patent family sizes, Number of Patent Reference, Number of Claim can be confirmed and therefore the value of international R&D can be more quantitatively evaluated. This paper not only finds out that the patent characteristics of international patents are significantly different with non-international patent, but also shows higher degree of patent internationalization implies that more patent values in term of patent characteristics.

The importance of marketing’s effectiveness in creating shareholder value has been a debatable issue at academic and practitioner levels. The existing studies, however, typically focus on North-American firms. The present study examines the influence of changes on brand value on shareholder value in different geographic areas, by using a sample of international brands for the period 2002-2012. Shareholder value is measured by two metrics: Tobin’s Q ratio and Fama-French three-factor alpha. The results support that brand value changes impact shareholder value. However, a deeper analysis of changes through time shows that shareholder value is created previously to Interbrand announcement. In other words, Interbrand measure seems to be a backward measure of shareholder value, and have no predictive ability. The absence of predictability of brand value in shareholder value is consistent with financial markets efficiency. In addition, results show that firm’s branding strategy is positively associated with shareholder value. Overall, these findings contribute for strengthening the existing knowledge and understanding of the brand value-shareholder value nexus.

With network technology is coming of age, we are in a complex network of entities and virtual coexistence, which not only completely changes the industrial structure, but also allows people to freely shuttle between physical and new networks, resulting in multiple personal or organizational identities. In the global supply chain network formed by virtual - physical social networks, individuals or organizations can cooperate with others flexibly, thereby the value creation strategy oriented by social capital cannot be ignored. Previously, scholars’ discussion relatively focus on the impact of social capital of entity or virtual network on value creation from the perspective of network relationship structure. Furthermore, the research as to the network context of virtual and physical coexistence is still limited the conceptual framework, and the specific conceptual framework and analytical methods are still ambiguity. This study utilizes multiple embedded cases study for exploratory research, based on social capital, value activities and value creation and other related theories, and to light up four platform ecology cases, The Light up of Dadaocheng platform, Pinkoi cross-border e-commerce design, Shop.com and E.SUN BANK financial service, representing different growth stages. Through interviews and comparative analysis of participatory observation, this paper attempts to clarify the similarities and differences between Virtual - Physical social capital from different growth stages of platform ecology. Therefore, in terms of measurement indicators, the study divides social capital into four categories, virtual, physical, homogeneity and heterogeneous which constitutes a 2*2 Matrix. Furthermore, the study subdivides the categories of social capital from the knowledge, information, brand, goods and access of key network resources in business model. For the sake of exploration how social capital creates value, this study divides value activities into four categories, complementarity value activities, diminishes value activities, supplementary value activities and transformation value activities. Meanwhile value creation is divided into three stages, value formation, value sharing and social well-being. Research findings. Firstly, in the platform ecological network, participants can measure their network position in the platform ecosystem through the key network resources and cooperative relationships among participants. Therefore, this study proposes a new theoretical view of the key resource centrality. Secondly, the interactive impact of different key network resources on value creation. Thirdly, the different growth stages of platform ecology affect the priority of value creation. Fourthly, four different value activities, complementarity, diminishes, supplementary and transformation, affect the creation of value by social capital. Finally, based on the theoretical framework and case analysis results, this study puts forward the contribution of this study to the theory, management implications, and suggestions for future follow-up research.

ABSTRACT The purposes of this study are to examine the shareholders’ wealth effects and operating performance for the firms engaging in focusing activities. The sampling period covers the years from 1993 to 2002 and thirty-three focusing announcements from Taiwan listing companies are collected. We use the market model to measure the announcement effects. And, a multiple regression model is built to analyze the determinants of the effects from corporate governance perspectives. Moreover, we also examine the operating performances of focusing firms after the announcements. The empirical results are as follows: 1. The firms engaging in focusing activities received significantly positive responses from the market when they announced the news. 2. The factor of the board size、the degree of diversification in preceding year and the R&D expenditures are positively related to the announcement effects. However, the factor of the share proportion for the block shareholders is negatively related to the effects. 3. Firms would show better operating performance in the terms of the growth in total equity after the year of focusing announcements made.

In the past, The Statement of Financial Accounting Standard setting in Taiwan was based on the conservative accounting principle. Under the historical cost accounting, reliability is more important than relevance. In the New Economy era, the unrecognized intangibles is increasing, relevance is getting more important. The gap between market value and book value of firms is becoming large. Recently, Taiwan has set many accounting standard based on the fair value accounting principle to reduce the gap. Therefore, this paper discusses from historical cost to fair value approach whether or not it improves relevance of accounting information. Based on the Residual Income Valuation Model and unrecognized intangibles value measurement model, this paper examines the value relevance of financial statements with implementation of the multiple fair value accounting standards. The empirical result indicates investors carry on investment decisions, they increasingly trust in earnings information. However, Financial commences in balance sheet just only it is significant. After added unrecognized intangibles value, its increasing explanatory power is decreased gradually to the stock price. This paper infers that it can assist the measurement of the intangible assets while adopting multiple fair value standards.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of fair value hierarchy information on firm value and it also analyzes the relation between intellectual capital (IC) and market value. By adopting the Residual Income Valuation Model Of Ohlson(1995) , the sample of this study is collected from the listed banks between 2011 and 2012 in Taiwan as the subjects. The empirical result indicates that the disclosure of the hierarchy information can elevate the value of firm. For the financial holding banks and independent banks, the disclosure of fair value of financial assets instruments has a significant positive effect on market value. The empirical result shows that there is a significant positive association between market value and most of IC elements. However, due to the difference of firm structure, the holding banks should focus on how to improve the customer capital and the process capital of the independent banks in order to increase the firm value.

Festival activities play an important role in inducing tourists for regional leisure and tourism industries. Local governments have viewed festival activities as a substantial mean in developing their cultural Industries. At the same time, people also consider festival activities as a major alternative when selecting their leisure activities. However, there are over 100 festival activities in Taiwan each year. Those activities are gradually becoming similar in some ways and possibly lose their attractions and freshness to tourists. What benefits can tourists get when participating these festival activities? What types of festivals are attractive to them? Based on points listed above, this study utilized the research methods of means-end chain model (MEC), soft laddering, and depth interview. Ninety people who ever attended festival activities are selected as research objects. The main goal of this study is to explore the benefits that tourists can get during participating festival activities, construct the value contents and connection model of it, and in the end explain the meanings that festival activities have brought to tourists. The research results demonstrate that: (1) by using content analytical method, the authors extracted 19 activity attributes. Among the 19 festival benefits, “experiencing the activity” is the most valued one. Among the 17 elements of the festival values, the element “feeling of joy” is regarded as the most important one. (2) The hierarchical value map of festival activities shows that feelings of joy, worth, satisfaction, safety, achievement, excitement/surprise, freedom, touching, and self-esteem are the ultimate values that induce tourists to experience these festival activities. (3) The authors divided the festival activities into three categories: artistic cultural festivals, industrial promotion and community empowerment festivals, and national innovative and inherit ceremonial festivals. The comparative analytical results demonstrate that activity attribute “experiencing the activity” is viewed as important by objects from these three categories at the same time. The festival benefits that are laid emphasis on include “to feel the climates” and “learning and education”. And the values that are paid much more attentions are feelings of joy, satisfaction, and worth. Feeling of joy is described as the most significant festival value to all people in these three categories at the same time.

This study was done by planning and actual implementation of a series of horticultural activitites to a group of students with special needs, to understand the teacher-student interactions, and the impact of these horticultural activities upon students’ experientical learning experience. This study was done with a qualitative study in minds, where transcripts from classroom teaching records, notes taken by this researcher, lesson plans, and teacher’s reflection journals were used to achieve the designated objectives. The target subjects were seven students receiving special education at a certain elementary school in Taipei County. Thirty six classes were conducted over eighteen weeks, two sessions per week. Because students with oral abilities were required for this research, the samples were focused on the three students who could speak and the other students made a lesser contribution. There were nine teaching activities in the research which were: A. Preparation period: dividing students into groups, introduction, set rules, practice the use of gardening tools. B. Cooperation stage: preparing school land. C. Campus tour: get to know the plants around on campus. D. Plants search and indetification stage: identifing the special features of the individual plants. E. Propagation stage: cutting propagation of Ruellia Brittoniana. F. Transplanting plants stage: Setcreasea Pallida. G. Plant growing period. H.Cultivate plants. I. Reaping the harvest stage: harvest and sharing. The research found that school horticultural activities initiated the special students’ learning in the natural science field, providing them opportunities to learn by doing and the teacher had a chance to reflect on his own teaching methods. It was also advised that future researchers might be interested in the investigation of this field further to get backup for consultation, asking for parents’ assistance, or to use school unused facilities, giving special students adequate chances to practice and make good use of questioning and probing skills to get to know more about special students’ learning.

Due to the complexity of semiconductor manufacturing and the unexpected occurrence of undesirable events in the fabrication, it is not easy to manage the production cycle time. Usually, the management method is by releasing and dispatching. These methods need much time to analyze data, and usually can not effectively manage the fabrication in time. The purpose of this research is to construct a management mechanism for cycle time reduction. The method is by real time monitoring the difference between target cycle time and actual cycle time. According to the “time difference”, the monitor system will detect every possible delayed lots and order to correct the undesirable events. Then, the real time monitor system will send alarm information to the people who is responsible for the corrective action. According to the simulation result, this monitor system can provide the manager real time information to manage the fabrication well.

This research utilizes the framework of Innovation Intensive Service (IIS) to analyze the firm-level strategy for intellectual property services. By structuring a 5x4 matrix, encompassing four service types and five innovation strategies, we elucidate the strategic positioning and future development trend of the industry. The research methods include literature review, expert interview, questionnaires and statistic analysis to verify the key success factors of service value cration activities and externalities. Intellectual property services are service-oriented, and it is necessary to define the service type, strategy for innovation competitiveness, service value creation activities and externalities amid the service process. It was found that most of the intellectual property services are customized. The five strategies of innovation services include management innovation, utilization innovation, organizational innovation, business model innovation and marketing innovation, as defined in this research. The five service value cration activities involve intellectual property analysis, application, portfolio and maintenance, transaction and new ventures. There are six external resources, including complementarities, R&D/science, technology, service, market, and other users. Results show that the current strategic positioning focuses on “Management innovation” at a low level of customization, “general service” with a support of core competence of intellectual property analysis and applications as well as externalities of service. The future trend is likely to move to “Selective Service” and “Organization Innovation” with support of service value cration activities of intellectual property analysis, application, portfolio and maintenance and transaction as well as externalities of complementarities, R&D/science, technology, service and market. Many accounting studies examine the relative value-relevance of equity book value and earnings under different settings. This study explores the prediction, based on the inference that firm’s real activities manipulation makes earnings variable more noisy, that the relative value-relevance of earnings decreases for firms with real activities manipulation. Inspired by the suggestion of Burgstahler & Dichev (1997), we also conjecture the relative value-relevance of equity book value increases as the relative value-relevance of earnings decreases. The empirical results provide strong support to our hypotheses. Further examining reveals these results can be attributed to firm’s strategically aggressive earnings reporting (positive real activities manipulation). In addition, there are only moderate impacts of PROCOMP Company event on the relative value-relevance changes of accounting numbers, particularly, book value of equity. In terms of the relative value-relevance changes of financial statement components, this study provides insights into the quality of financial information provided to the market when real activities manipulation is implemented.

In the modern knowledge economy, intangible assets has become the high proportion of enterprise value, brand value is also an unrecorded intangible assets. Value relevance of corporate brand value in Taiwan, previous studies have not yet been discussed extensively. Therefore, this study examines the association of the brand value and stock price, and additional consider the corporate life cycle factors to investigate whether the value relevance of brand value at various stages of life cycle is different. This study use the Taiwanese international brands company as sample, released by Taiwan Interband website from 2003 to 2011, and this paper use Ohlson model to test the value relevance of the brand value. Finally, this study employ the Anthony and Ramesh’s (1992) method to divide sample to different corporate life cycle stage. The empirical results show that there is a significant positive relationship between brand value and share price. After considering the life-cycle factors, the value relevance of brand value at the growth phase higher than the maturity and recession stage. However, the value relevance of brand value was no significant different between mature and recession stage.
