Vegetation isoline equations describe analytical relationships between two reflectances of different wavelengths. Their applications range from retrievals of biophysical parameters to the derivation of the inter-sensor relationships of spectral vegetation indexes. Among the three variants of vegetation isoline equations introduced thus far, the optimized asymmetric-order vegetation isoline equation is the newest and is known to be the most accurate. This accuracy assessment, however, has been performed only for the wavelength pair of red and near-infrared (NIR) bands fixed at ∼655 nm and ∼865 nm, respectively. The objective of this study is to extend this wavelength limitation. An accuracy assessment was therefore performed over a wider range of wavelengths, from 400 to 1200 nm. The optimized asymmetric-order vegetation isoline equation was confirmed to demonstrate the highest accuracy among the three isolines for all the investigated wavelength pairs. The second-best equation, the asymmetric-order isoline equation, which does not include an optimization factor, was not superior to the least-accurate equation (i.e., the first-order isoline equation) in some cases. This tendency was prominent when the reflectances of the two wavelengths were similar. By contrast, the optimized asymmetric-order vegetation isoline showed stable performance throughout this study. A single factor introduced into the optimized asymmetric-order isoline equation was concluded to effectively reduce errors in the isoline for all the wavelength combinations examined in this study.

Résumé :
Two isolines, with different alleles for resistance to Phytophthora sojae, of the soybean cultivars, Beeson, Century, and Williams were grown in replicated tests to assess yield losses attributable to this pathogen. Isolines susceptible to prevalent races of the pathogen had black seed coats as a marker trait; isolines resistant to prevalent races of the pathogen had yellow seed coats. Included in the tests were blends composed of equal numbers of seed of the two isolines for each cultivar. Tests were conducted at three locations in Indiana and one location in Ohio for three years. In six environments, where Phytophthora root and stem rot damaged soybean, isolines susceptible to prevalent races of the pathogen produced seed yields from 65 to 93% of the yields of isolines resistant to these races. In four of these environments, isoline blends produced yields equal to those of the resistant isoline. In two environments, where susceptible isolines averaged 65 and 69% of the yield of the resistant isoline; the blends averaged 89 and 83% of the yield of the resistant isoline. Where the pathogen reduced yields of susceptible isolines, yellow seeds of the isoline resistant to prevalent races of the pathogen contributed from 10 to 33% more seed than would be expected if resistant and susceptible isolines contributed equally to seed yield. The data demonstrate that plants of the resistant isoline were compensating for reduced productivity of the susceptible plants in the blend.

When growing in competition withA. cylindrica, the shortest isoline allowed the greatest amount ofA. cylindricaseed production but did not have the lowestT. aestivumyield. However, when compared to theA. cylindrica-free control, the shortest isoline had the greatest percent yield loss. The tallest isoline reducedA. cylindricaseed production the most, andT. aestivumyield reduction due toA. cylindricaon a percent basis was the least when averaged over 2 yr. When competing againstA. cylindrica, the tallest isoline did not always have the largest yield and yield parameters, and the shortest isoline did not always have the smallest yield and yield parameters. There is a cost to theT. aestivumplant to produce extra stem biomass that may reduce yield potential of taller plants and reduce the advantage gained by being taller than the surrounding weeds.

Résumé :
The Tibetan Plateau, the highest plateau in the world, has experienced strong climate warming during the last few decades. The greater increase of temperature at higher elevations may have strong impacts on the vertical movement of vegetation activities on the plateau. Although satellite-based observations have explored this issue, these observations were normally provided by the coarse satellite data with a spatial resolution of more than hundreds of meters (e.g., GIMMS and MODIS), which could lead to serious mixed-pixel effects in the analyses. In this study, we employed the medium-spatial-resolution Landsat NDVI data (30 m) during 1990–2019 and investigated the relationship between temperature and the elevation-dependent vegetation changes in six mountainous regions on the Tibetan Plateau. Particularly, we focused on the elevational movement of the vegetation greenness isoline to clarify whether the vegetation greenness isoline moves upward during the past three decades because of climate warming. Results show that vegetation greening occurred in all six mountainous regions during the last three decades. Increasing temperatures caused the upward movement of greenness isoline at the middle and high elevations (>4000 m) but led to the downward movement at lower elevations for the six mountainous regions except for Nyainqentanglha. Furthermore, the temperature sensitivity of greenness isoline movement changes from the positive value to negative value by decreasing elevations, suggesting that vegetation growth on the plateau is strongly regulated by other factors such as water availability. As a result, the greenness isoline showed upward movement with the increase of temperature for about 59% pixels. Moreover, the greenness isoline movement increased with the slope angles over the six mountainous regions, suggesting the influence of terrain effects on the vegetation activities. Our analyses improve understandings of the diverse response of elevation-dependent vegetation activities on the Tibetan Plateau.

Résumé :
This paper studies the numerical calculation method of mutual inductance between two superconducting pancake coils. And the calculation results are proved through experiment. Use this calculation method, the isoline map of two superconducting pancake coils’ coupling coefficient with the different spatial distributions is calculated. Then the designer can rapidly design the spatial distribution of superconducting pancake coils according to the coupling coefficient they needs. Specially, there is a curve of coupling coefficient equals 0 in the isoline ma. For the occasions which want to eliminate the mutual inductance between two superconducting pancake coils, this curve can provide a good guidance for design a compact layout and reduce the volume. Finally, the 0 value curve is tested under the guidance of calculation result. Through this experiment, the correctness and engineering guidance of isoline map is verified.

Résumé :
Isolite is a ceramic-like, porous soil amendment purported to sustain plant growth under reduced irrigation and increase plant survival during drought. The purpose of this greenhouse experiment was to determine the effect of an Isotite-amended soilless container medium on: (1) growth under reduced irrigation frequency and (2) water stress during drought of Impatiens × hybrids `Accent Red'. On 2 June 1993, seedlings were transplanted into 13.2 liter black plastic pots containing a 4:1 composted pine bark:coarse sand (vol.) medium amended with Isolite CG-1 granules at rates of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (vol.). Study I. Seedlings were. irrigated with 500 ml tap water every two days for two weeks followed by a 4 week schedule of 500 ml tap water every 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 days. In general, growth parameters were explained by irrigation treatment effects and did not differ with Isolite rate. Growth indices ranged from +54% to + 143%, while final visual quality grades ranged from 2.4 to 5.0 (5-point scale), shoot dry weight from 8.7 to 30.7 g, root dry weight from 2.0 to 7.9 g, and leaf area from 0.14 to 0.48 m2. Study II. Seedlings were irrigated with 500 ml tap water every 2 days for rive weeks followed by a two week drought. Plant water status parameters were similar at all rates of Isolite. Leaf expansion rates ranged from + 89% to +98%, white a final mid-day xylem pressure potential of -0.4 MPa and a final visual quality grade of 2.0 were uniform across all treatments. Under these conditions, Isolite did not limit water stress of container-grown Impatiens `Accent Red'.

A smoothing approximation procedure that allows one to adapt a piecewise linear isoline to its representation by polynomials up to the third order is considered. The smoothing approximation reduces the effect of linear interpolation errors in isoline plotting. The procedure is based on the least-squares method. The data replenishment methods of spline cubic interpolation, most commonly used in practical work, are analyzed. A universal approach for the formation of boundaries of isoline areas on the basis of data availability at the computational grid nodes is discussed.

Résumé :
The transgenic corn line 98140 has a high level of resistance to glyphosate and all five chemical classes of herbicides that inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS). The dual herbicide resistance is due to a molecular stack of two constitutively expressed genes: gat4621, which produces a glyphosate acetyltransferase that rapidly inactivates glyphosate, and hra, which produces a highly resistant ALS. On a rate basis, the positive 98140 isoline with a single copy of the gat4621 gene is over 1,000-fold more resistant to glyphosate than a negative isoline without the transgene. Similarly, the positive 98140 isoline with the hra gene is over 1,000-fold more resistant to ALS-inhibiting herbicides such as chlorimuron and sulfometuron at the whole-plant and enzyme level. The gat4621 and hra genes do not change the natural tolerance of corn to selective herbicides, so new corn hybrids based on 98140 will give growers more options to manage weeds and delay the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds.

Résumé :
A numerical model of Transient Electromagnetic Methods, which used to detect geological conditions in tunnels, was created by ANSYS finite element software, and the transient electromagnetic response characteristics of typical unfavorable geological bodies were discussed. The results indicate that the apparent resistivity isoline almost outputs in straight structure, and augments equably with the depth increasing when no unfavorable geological body is in front of the tunnel workface. The apparent resistivity isoline obviously reduces when water-rich karst cave, fault, or fracture exist in the front of the tunnel workface, where water-rich karst cave exists, the apparent resistivity isoline becomes close together, and there is to be an ordered pyramid resistivity-reduced area which can be an evidence of rich water fault. However, it will increase when dry fault or karst cave exist, and the high resistivity area corresponding to dry cave shows some triangles, but this phenomena is hard identified, which need detail analyses according to hydrogeologic data.

Résumé :
Gould and White (1968) introduced the measurement and isoline mapping of regional preferences, producing preference or “isoeutope” maps. As cartographers know, the decision to employ isoline mapping as a cartographic display technique is valid insofar as certain assumptions are met, notably the assumption that the variable being mapped reflects an underlying continuum. This assumption is doubtful in the case of a variable such as regional preference insofar as it is based on rankings or ratings of existing regional units such as states for which human cognition is not continuous. The implications of mapping preference with isolines are discussed, particularly with respect to the attitudes the maps reflect and the cognitive responses they elicit in viewers. We argue that isoline mapping of data such as state preferences produces misleading impressions of intraregional variation and is neither necessary nor desirable. Alternative methods for the collection and cartographic display of regional preference data are discussed. Notably, we propose the use of “psuedo-Chernoff” faces as an appropriate technique.

In order to research thermal conductivity of fracture rock, fluid-heat coupling test and simulation are studied. Empirical equation of thermal conductivity is obtained and conductivity factor is ensured by test data. Based on the fluid-heat coupling model of heat-transfer, temperature field distribution of fracture rock is described. At the same time, the heat-transfer equation is discretized by using weighted residual Galerkin finite element. Combined with boundary condition and parameters, the temperature field in fractured rock mass is simulated by finite element method. The temperature of fractured rock mass under the action of the seepage is combined with the initial rock temperature, fluid temperature and the rate of the flow. Thermo-isoline is discontiguous at boundary of fracture, which shows that the seepage affects the distribution of temperature field. The change rate of temperture isoline is gradually reduced along the single fissure flow, therefore the rate of heat-transfer is decreased. The influence of fluid temperature to temperature distribution is small, but different fluid temperature obviously affects thermo-isoline.

Résumé :
Insect populations and damage in three plantings (early, mid-, and late-season) of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic sweet corn were compared to a non-transgenic isoline at Charleston, SC, during 2000. The transgenic corn was expressing the crylA(b) gene from B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki. No fall armyworms, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), were present in the early-planted crop, and numbers of corn earworms, Heliocoverpa zea (Boddie), were significantly reduced in the Bt-transgenic corn compared to the non-Bt isoline. The non-Bt isoline had 65% H. zea infested ears compared to only 10% ears from the Bt-transgenic line. Damage and numbers of H. zea and S. frugiperda also were significantly higher in the non-Bt sweet corn planted in mid- and late-season plantings. Percent damaged ears by H. zea was 77% in the non-transgenic sweet corn and 21% in the Bt-sweet corn during the mid-season crop. In the late-planted crop, populations of H. zea averaged 15 per 120 ears in the non-BT isoline compared to less than 2 per 120 ears in the Bt-transgenic crop. Whorl damage by fall armyworms significantly reduced plant height in both mid-season and late-season non-transgenic crops but not in Bt-transgenic sweet corn. Numbers of other insects and spiders were low and not significantly different between the two treatments. Bt transformed sweet corn will play a major role in reducing populations of H. zea, S. frugiperda and limiting pesticides in this crop.

Résumé :
Understanding the possible influence of inorganic soil amendments on salt leaching and deposition is helpful in selecting soil amendments when salinity is a problem. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to: 1) evaluate the effects of isolite and zeolite on turf quality of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) under three salinity levels; and 2) determine if soil amendments affected leachate composition, salt deposition, and soil sodium absorption ratio (SAR). `Challenger' Kentucky bluegrass was grown in columns filled with 100% sand, 50 sand: 50 isolite, and 50 sand: 50 zeolite (v/v). Irrigation waters with three levels of salinity [0.25 (control), 3.5, or 6.5 dS·m-1] were applied daily for 3 months in Study I and for 6 months in Study II. Saline water reduced turf quality compared with control. Amendment of sand with isolite increased turf quality only during the third month of treatment with the most saline water in Study I. However, zeolite increased turf quality during both the second and third months at both salinity levels in both studies. The beneficial effects of zeolite on turf quality diminished 5 and 6 months after salinity treatments. Amending sand with zeolite reduced leaching of Na+ and K+, but increased the leaching of Ca2+ and Mg2+. Amending sand with zeolite increased SAR values by 0.9, 1.6, and 6.3 units in Study I and 0.9, 3.6, and 10.9 units in Study II, under control, 3.5, and 6.5 dS·m-1 salinity treatments, respectively. Isolite increased SAR by 1.1-1.6 units with 3.5 dS·m-1 and by 2.5-3.5 units with 6.5 dS·m-1 salinity treatments. Results indicate that amending with zeolite may buffer soil solution Na+ concentration in the short-term. In the long-term, however, a substantial amount of Na+ may be retained concurrent with Ca2+ and Mg2+ exchange, thereby increasing sodicity and salinity problems.

Résumé :
A field experiment was established to study the impact of added mineral N on the prediction of N2 fixation by soybean, and the consequences for the nature of any N credit that might be used to modify fertilizer recommendations to a following non-fixing crop. Nodulating and non-nodulating isolin es of soybean were grown with five rates of N fertilizer, and in a second year corn was grown in the same plots and its yield compared with a response curve. Yield, total N content, amount of N derived from soil, and fertilizer utilization of the nodulating isoline of soybean were not affected by fertilizer N. In contrast, mineral N inhibited nodulation and led to a decrease in the amount of N fixed. The balance of N in the soil was more negative for lower levels of applied N, but by the following spring the amount of mineral N in the soil was the same in all plots. The yield of corn was greater in the plots that had grown nodulating soybean than the non-nodulating isoline. The N fertilizer replacement value of 25 (8 kg N ha-1 resulted from a greater amount of root residues in the nodulating soybean, together with a C:N ratio that would favour faster mineralization than in the non-nodulating isoline. Key words: Corn, mineral N, N credit, fixation, soybean

Résumé :
It is significantly important to have the knowledge of electromagnet situation of battlefield, because it contains a lot of useful information to understand the situation of the whole battlefield. Electromagnet situation visualization would be very useful to help people to understand the situation, and handle battlefield situation, such as the size and quality of the electromagnetic radiation source, target objects, and operational purposes by the two parties engaged in combat scale. This paper proposes two electromagnet situation visualization methods, one is an isoline tracking algorithm based on floating rectangle and the other is an isoline filling algorithm based on linear interpolation, which also solves the problem of low accuracy and low efficiency. This paper also implements and displays the visualization results using different ways of demonstration modules, which show that the visualization results are more intuitive.

Résumé :
Soybean seed coat mottling often has been a problematic symptom for soybean growers and the soybean industry. The percentages of seed in eight soybean lines with seed coat mottling were evaluated at harvest after inoculating plants during the growing season with Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV), Soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and both viruses inside an insect-proof cage in the field. Results from experiments conducted over 2 years indicated that plants infected with BPMV and SMV, alone or in combination, produced seed coat mottling, whereas noninoculated plants produced little or no mottled seed. BPMV and SMV inoculated on the same plants did not always result in higher percentages of mottled seed compared with BPMV or SMV alone. There was significant virus, line, and virus-line interaction for seed coat mottling. The non-seed-coat-mottling gene (Im) in Williams isoline L77-5632 provided limited, if any, protection against mottling caused by SMV and none against BPMV. The Peanut mottle virus resistance gene Rpv1 in Williams isoline L85-2308 did not give any protection against mottling caused by SMV, whereas the SMV resistance gene Rsv1 in Williams isoline L78-379 and the resistance gene or genes in the small-seeded line L97-946 gave high levels of protection against mottling caused by SMV. The correlations (r = 0.77 for year 2000 and r = 0.89 for year 2001) between virus infection of the parent plant and seed coat mottling were significant (P = 0.01), indicating that virus infection of plants caused seed coat mottling.

Résumé :
One of the methods that can be used to find solutions to linear programming models is the Graphical Method. Graphical methods are divided into the isoline method and the extreme point method. Based on initial observations and interviews, it was found that around 54% of students still needed help understanding the isoline method material in solving linear programs, especially when given real problems related to everyday life. In addition, students' learning interest in linear programming courses also varies. So the purpose of research in this article is to describe the level of understanding of students who have high, medium, and low learning interest in linear programming material, precisely the isoline method material, in determining the optimum solution. The method in this study is a qualitative method with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire method for data on student learning interests and semi-structured test and interview methods to describe the level of student understanding based on APOS theory. The instruments in this study were questionnaires, written tests, and interview guidelines. Checking the validity of the data in this study used time triangulation. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results of the research show that: (1) subjects with high learning interest are at the level of schematic understanding; (2) subjects with interest in learning are at the level of understanding objects; and (3) subjects with low interest in learning are at the level of understanding of Action.

Résumé :
The objective of this study was to characterize the pathogenicity of several local isolates of Diaporthe phaseolorum (Cooke & Ellis) Sacc. var. meridionalis Fernández and its anamorph, Phomopsis phaseoli (Desmaz.) Sacc. meridionalis Morgan-Jones, the causal agent of southern stem canker of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), in soybean lines carrying major resistance genes. Soybean plants with typical stem canker symptoms were collected during the 1996 to 1997 and 1997 to 1998 growing seasons in the central and southern areas of Santa Fe Province, Argentina. The pathogen was isolated from the internal tissues of infected stems, cultured on potato glucose agar acidified with 0.2% lactic acid (APGA), amended with streptomycin at 100 mg/liter, and maintained in the dark at 25 ± 1°C. Isolates were characterized based on the morphology of colonies, perithecia, and pycnidia and measurement of asci, bicellular, biguttulate ascospores, and alpha conidia (1). Soybean cultivars used to assay pathogenicity included Tracy M (Rdc1 and Rdc2 genes), Isoline I (Tracy Misoline with only the Rdc1 gene), Isoline II (Tracy M isoline with only the Rdc2 gene), Crockett (Rdc3 gene), Hutchinson (Rdc4 gene), and RA 702 (susceptible cultivar). Hypocotyls of 14-day-old seedlings grown in the greenhouse were inoculated by the toothpick method. Four replicates of nine seedlings each were used. Seedlings punctured with sterile toothpicks served as controls. The experiment was repeated twice with similar results. The D. phaseolorum var. meridionalis isolates assayed and their collection locations were Dpm1 (Malabrigo), Dpm2 (Los Molinos), Dpm3 (San Justo), Dpm5 (Oliveros), Dpm6 (San Jerónimo), and Dpm7 (Clarke). Twenty-eight days after inoculation, stem canker reactions were measured as the percentage of dead plants. The pathogen was reisolated from stems of randomly chosen symptomatic plants on day 14 after inoculation. These plants were included in the calculation of the percentage of dead plants. In control plants, lesions were not detected, and mycelial growth did not occur from stem portions plated on APGA. Tracy M and RA 702 had 0 to 7% dead plants and 70 to 95% dead plants, respectively, with all assayed isolates. Cultivars with single resistance genes reacted differently to various isolates. Isolates Dpm1 and Dpm3 caused little or no stem canker (<10% dead plants) on all cultivars with resistance genes. Isolates Dpm2 and Dpm6 killed 56 and 52%, respectively, of Isoline II (Rdc2 gene) plants. Isolates Dpm2 and Dpm7 killed 25% of cv. Hutchinson (Rdc4 gene) and Isoline I (Rdc1 gene) plants, respectively. Isolate Dpm5 killed <12% of plants with genes Rdc1, Rdc2, or Rdc3. The reaction of isolate Dpm5 with Hutchinson (Rdc4 gene) was not evaluated. The pathogenic diversity of these isolates of D. phaseolorum var. meridionalis may have been induced by the wide diffusion of resistant host cultivars (2). References: (1) F. A. Fernández and R. T. Résumé :
Twelve independently transformed lines of transgenic corn (Zea mays L.) expressing the CryIA(b) insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki were field tested to evaluate their resistance to the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). Silks of the primary (=top) ears of transgenic [CryIA(b) positive] and isoline control plants [no CryIA(b) protein] were artificially infested with first-instar H. zea larvae and the length of ear penetration was measured after 19 d. Eight of the 12 lines had significantly less ear damage than their respective isoline controls; 3 transgenic lines reduced H. zea feeding damage by > 75% and stunted surviving H. zea larvae. Concentration of the CryIA(b) protein (μg/g fresh weight) in silks of the transgenic lines, determined using ELISA, ranged from 0.0 to 1.28 μg/g. Within transgenic lines, there was a weak (P < 0.06) negative relationship between the concentration of CryIA(b) protein in fresh silks and the length of H. zea ear penetration.

Résumé :
Using image processing technology to extract important information, such as isoline and weather system of the meteorological facsimile chart, is conducive to integration with other information, and has important practical value in navigation operations, marine weather forecasting, target recognition, and image retrieval. In meteorological facsimile charts, there are many types of medium-value lines, dense lines in some areas, superimposition and presence of multiple information, such as isolines and isoline characters, intersection of specific weather system symbols, etc. For different types of contours, numeric characters, weather system symbols and other object characteristics, the corresponding object extraction and recognition methods are proposed: Remove the latitude and longitude lines and coastline in the meteorological facsimile map by basemap matching; According to the position and shape features of the figure box, extract the meteorological fax figure box, separate and remove the different character tagging information; On the basis of identifying triangles and semicircles in weather symbols of the frontal system, the frontal symbols are extracted based on the circumscribed triangles and template matching. First the contour character on the fax image is expanded into a block connected region. Determine the position of the character information by judging the number of pixels in the connected region, and then use rotation and template matching to identify the numeric character. Using the meteorological facsimile maps of the US Meteorological Center and the Japan Meteorological Center for the main information extraction, experiments show that the method of this paper has a good effect on the complete and accurate symbol extraction of frontal weather systems, and reduces the computational complexity of contour detection, isoline extraction and numerical recognition. The methods can detect some information from weather charts properly and the error rate is very low.

Résumé :
AbstractKnowledge of the vertical and horizontal distribution of Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on genetically modified cotton plants over time could help optimize decision-making in integrated cotton aphid management programs. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the vertical and horizontal distribution of A. gossypii in non-transgenic Bt cotton and transgenic Bt-cotton over time during two cotton seasons by examining plants throughout the seasons. There was no significant interaction between years and cotton cultivar treatments for apterous or alate aphids. Considering year-to-year data, analyses on season-long averages of apterous or alate aphids showed that aphid densities per plant did not differ among years. The number of apterous aphids found per plant for the Bt transgenic cultivar (2427 apterous aphids per plant) was lower than for its isoline (3335 apterous aphids per plant). The number of alate aphids found per plant on the Bt transgenic cultivar (12.28 alate aphids per plant) was lower than for the isoline (140.56 alate aphids per plant). With regard to the vertical distribution of apterous aphids or alate aphids, there were interactions between cotton cultivar, plant age and plant region. We conclude that in comparison to non-Bt cotton (DP 4049), Bt cotton (DP 404 BG (Bollgard)) has significant effects on the vertical, horizontal, spatial and temporal distribution patterns of A. gossypii, showing changes in its distribution behaviour inside the plant as the cotton crop develops. The results of our study are relevant for understanding the vertical and horizontal distribution of A. gossypii on Bt cotton cultivar (DP 404 BG (Bollgard)) and on its isoline (DP 4049), and could be useful in decision-making, implementing controls and determining the timing of population peaks of this insect.

Résumé :
The southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is a major pest of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) in the United States. Since none of the leading bell pepper cultivars grown in the U.S. exhibit adequate levels of resistance, a breeding program was initiated to incorporate the N root-knot nematode resistance gene into commercial bell pepper germplasm. A backcross breeding procedure was used. The donor parent of the N gene was the open-pollinated, pimiento pepper cultivar Mississippi Nemaheart, and the recurrent parents were the open-pollinated bell pepper cultivars Keystone Resistant Giant and Yolo Wonder. A large number of homozygous resistant BC6 populations were evaluated in field tests in 1995, and two lines (PA-440, an isoline of `Keystone Resistant Giant', and PA-453, an isoline of `Yolo Wonder') were selected for further field evaluation and seed multiplication in 1996. Results of replicated field and greenhouse tests conducted in 1996 indicate that root-knot nematode resistance has been incorporated successfully in `Keystone Resistant Giant' and `Yolo Wonder' backgrounds.

Résumé :
[For the English abstract and full text of the article please see the attached PDF-File (English version follows Russian version)].ABSTRACT Prevention of the majority of emergency situations in navigation is based on observing a certain distance between vessels, which allows timely taking precautionary measures in order to avoid contact. The thus created conditional space of safety distances forms a navigation safety zone. The article gives a universal conceptual definition of such a zone, a generalized structural classification of factors affecting its size and shape, the nature of the isolinear zonal boundary. The concepts of isoasphalia as an idealized safe boundary, as well as an isoasphalic surface forming an idealized safe area around the vessel are introduced. On the basis of set theory, a variational law of variation of piecewise functions describing a safe space asymmetric with respect to the vessel’s diametric plane is derived. The resulting expression allows us to identify the boundary of an asymmetric elliptical navigation safety zone. Keywords: sea vessels, navigation safety, idealized model, isoline boundary, isoashpalia, isoasphalic surface, asymmetric elliptic zone, set theory, variational law.

Résumé :
Secondary leaves of three near-isogenic lines of the wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivar Prelude, differing in their degree of resistance to the wheat stem rust fungus (Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici) race 32, were inoculated with uredospores of the fungus 12 days after germination. Photosynthetic O2 evolution, chlorophyll content, 3-phosphoglycerate content, and the gel electrophoretic pattern of thylakoid membrane proteins were investigated in rust-infected and healthy plants of the fully susceptible isoline Prelude, the moderately resistant isoline Prelude-Sr24, and the highly resistant isoline Prelude-Sr5. The rate of net photosynthesis, expressed per unit leaf area, was not significantly changed in any of the three near-isogenic lines during the early stages of infection, then increased slightly in the highly resistant line, while decreasing in the moderately resistant and fully susceptible lines. In the moderately resistant plants, this decrease continued linearly until 8 days after inoculation when no photosynthetic activity was detectable. In the susceptible line, the decrease gradually slowed down around 4–6 days after inoculation and photosynthetic activity remained constant thereafter. The chlorophyll content decreased only slightly during infection in highly resistant plants, but chlorophyll eventually disappeared completely from the infected, moderately resistant plants. The initially similarly strong decrease in chlorophyll content in the susceptible plants gradually came to a halt during the later stages of infection. Expressed per unit chlorophyll, photosynthetic O2 evolution increased slightly in highly resistant plants, remained unchanged in moderately resistant plants, and decreased to a stable level in the susceptible plants. The infection-induced changes in the 3-phosphoglycerate content closely resembled the changes in O2 evolution. No infection-induced changes were observed in the thylakoid membrane proteins from leaves of all three isolines. The results are discussed in relation to previously described changes in the primary metabolism of the three near-isogenic wheat lines after inoculation with the stem rust fungus, namely polyamine content, fructose-2,6-bisphosphate content, respiratory activity, invertase activity, and assimilate contents. Key words: Triticum aestivum, Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici, O2 evolution, chlorophyll, 3-phosphoglycerate, thylakoid membrane proteins.
