Abstract. Submarine volcanic vents are being used as natural laboratories to assess the effects of CO2 on marine organisms and communities, as this gas is the main component of emissions. Seagrasses should positively react to increased dissolved carbon, but in vicinity of volcanic vents there may be toxic substances, that can have indirect effects on seagrasses. Here we analysed the expression of 35 stress-related genes in the Mediterranean keystone seagrass species P. oceanica in the vicinity of submerged volcanic vents located in the Islands of Ischia and Panarea, Italy, and compared them with those from control sites away from the influence of vents. Reverse Transcription-Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to characterize the expression levels of genes. Fifty one per cent of genes analysed showed significant expression changes. Metal detoxification genes were mostly down-regulated in relation to controls both in Ischia and Panarea locations, indicating that P. oceanica does not increase the synthesis of heavy metal detoxification proteins in response to the environmental conditions present at the two vents. The expression levels of genes involved in free radical detoxification indicate that, in contrast with Ischia, P. oceanica at the Panarea vent face stressors that result in the production of reactive oxygen species triggering antioxidant responses. In addition, heat shock proteins were also activated at Panarea and not at Ischia. Overall, our study reveals that P. oceanica is generally under higher stress in the vicinity of the vents at Panarea than at Ischia, possibly resulting from environmental and evolutionary differences existing between the two volcanic sites. This is the first study analysing gene responses in marine plants living near natural CO2 vents and our results call for a careful consideration of factors, other than CO2 and acidification, that can cause stress to seagrasses and other organisms near volcanic vents.

Résumé :
Abstract The prehistoric (< 7 ka) Zaro eruption at Ischia island (Southern Italy) produced a lava complex overlaying a pyroclastic deposit. Although being of low energy, the Zaro eruption might have caused casualties among the neolithic population that inhabited that area of Ischia, and damages to their settlements. A similar eruption at Ischia with its present-day population would turn into a disaster. Therefore, understanding the magmatic processes that triggered the Zaro eruption would be important for volcanic hazard assessment and risk mitigation, so as to improve a knowledge that can be applied to other active volcanic areas worldwide. The main Zaro lava body is trachyte and hosts abundant mafic and felsic enclaves. Here all juvenile facies have been fully characterized from petrographic, geochemical and isotopic viewpoints. The whole dataset (major and trace element contents; Sr–Nd isotopic composition) leads to rule out a genetic link by fractional crystallization among the variable facies. Thus, we suggest that the Zaro mafic enclaves could represent a deep-origin mafic magma that mingled/mixed with the main trachytic one residing in the Ischia shallow magmatic system. The intrusion of such a mafic magma into a shallow reservoir filled by partly crystallized, evolved magma could have destabilized the magmatic system presumably acting as a rapid eruption trigger. The resulting processes of convection, mixing and rejuvenation have possibly played an important role in pre- and syn-eruptive phases also in several eruptions of different sizes in the Neapolitan area and elsewhere in the world.

Résumé :
This study discusses the siliciclastic to bioclastic deposits (in particular, the rhodolith deposits) in the Gulf of Naples based on sedimentological and seismo-stratigraphic data. The selected areas are offshore Ischia Island (offshore Casamicciola, Ischia Channel), where a dense network of sea-bottom samples has been collected, coupled with Sparker Multi-tip seismic lines, and offshore Procida–Pozzuoli (Procida Channel), where sea-bottom samples are available, in addition to Sparker seismic profiles. The basic methods applied in this research include sedimentological analysis, processing sedimentological data, and assessing seismo-stratigraphic criteria and techniques. In the Gulf of Naples, and particularly offshore Ischia, bioclastic sedimentation has been controlled by seafloor topography coupled with the oceanographic setting. Wide seismo-stratigraphic units include the bioclastic deposits in their uppermost part. Offshore Procida–Pozzuoli, siliciclastic deposits appear to prevail, coupled with pyroclastic units, and no significant bioclastic or rhodolith deposits have been outlined based on sedimentological and seismo-stratigraphic data. The occurrence of mixed siliciclastic–carbonate depositional systems is highlighted in this section of the Gulf of Naples based on the obtained results, which can be compared with similar systems recognized in the central Tyrrhenian Sea (Pontine Islands).

We are witnessing in recent years to a climate change due to a number of operations carried out by man. In this sense, agriculture is a strategic sector if we want to tackle this situation, more and more unsustainable as modern agriculture, also called "intensive", is causing more of a problem is the surface layer of the earth's crust, that the biosphere. The following work is part of a larger project, called VA.RIVI, applied on the island of Ischia, and is designed to specifically consider the components that form the basis for the calculation of the Water Footprint, which indicates the environmental impact of a product, a process or an entire company working on water resources. The WF is a relatively new tool, whose standard (ISO14046) was published not more than three months ago, on November 2014, so this does not always work considers the water footprint, but often refers to other indicators of the environmental impact, such as the Carbon Footprint, Ecological Footprint, or the Life Cycle Assessment. Will be analyzed the guidelines of the new ISO 14046, also reporting a sample calculation made possible thanks to the publications present in the bibliography, and will be compared to the production of organic wine. The work is complemented by a number of best practices to reduce the water footprint, but also to reduce the environmental impact of a company or a business process through small and large measures to be implemented at all levels.

The subpopulation of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Mediterranean Sea is presently list as “Endangered”. This study is an attempt to provide detailed data on sperm whale Bachelor Groups surrounding Ischia, Italy in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea). 24 hours, 38 minutes, and 38 seconds of sperm whale Bachelor Group acoustic data was analyzed in order to describe acoustic repertoire, classify behavioral associations to acoustic types, and identify habitat-use. The data showed that the acoustic repertoire of sperm whale Bachelor Groups is dominated by Usual Clicks. Additionally, a click type that maintains an inter-click interval (ICI) in between Usual Clicks and Creaks was identified during acoustic analysis and named “Transition Clicks”. Acoustic events were categorized into Single Code and Combination Code events; representing situations where one acoustic code was heard versus situations where two or more different acoustic codes were heard simultaneously. Analysis revealed that Single Code events represented 71.25% of the sperm whale Bachelor Group acoustic repertoire. The Usual Click/ Transition Click combination represented 73.74% of Combination Code events. A significant difference was shown between time spent in Single Code versus time spent in Combination Code for Usual Clicks and for Squeals. Acoustic repertoire data revealed the possibility for a strong collaborative acoustic structure and a speculated strategy for evolutionary success among sperm whale Bachelor Groups in Ischia, Italy. Additionally, the study showed that sperm whale Bachelor Groups spend 77.87% of the analyzed time engaged in orientation/searching/foraging behavior and 1.09% engaged in socializing behaviors. Event maps revealed a ‘hotspot’ of sperm whale Bachelor Group activity in the waters to the northwest of Ischia, Italy, within the submarine Canyon of Cuma, and outside of the boundaries for the Regno di Nettuno Marine Protected Area (MPA). It is recommended that the results of this study be utilized in extending the Regno di Nettuno MPA to include the ‘hotspot’, and possible critical area, for sperm whale Bachelor Groups. The results of this study and published literature of the sperm whales in this area could be utilized to create population-specific management strategies for more effective measures in ending population decrease and preserving the species. Further research should be carried out to analyze in detail the role of Transition Clicks in sperm whale acoustics and the possibility of a collaborative acoustic structure that has yet to be displayed in any other sperm whale population worldwide.

Résumé :
Global warming and ocean acidification, due to rising atmospheric levels of CO2, represent an actual threat to terrestrial and marine environments. Since Industrial Revolution, in less of 250 years, pH of surface seawater decreased on average of 0.1 unit, and is expected to further decreases of approximately 0.3-0.4 units by the end of this century. Naturally acidified marine areas, such as CO2 vent systems at the Ischia Island, allow to study acclimatation and adaptation of individual species as well as the structure of communities, and ecosystems to OA. The main aim of this thesis was to study how hard bottom sublittoral benthic assemblages changed trough time along a pH gradient. For this purpose, the temporal dynamics of mature assemblages established on artificial substrates (volcanic tiles) over a 3 year- period were analysed. Our results revealed how composition and dynamics of the community were altered and highly simplified at different level of seawater acidification. In fact, extreme low values of pH (approximately 6.9), affected strongly the assemblages, reducing diversity both in terms of taxa and functional groups, respect to lower acidification levels (mean pH 7.8) and ambient conditions (8.1 unit). Temporal variation was observed in terms of species composition but not in functional groups. Variability was related to species belonging to the same functional group, suggesting the occurrence of functional redundancy. Therefore, the analysis of functional groups kept information on the structure, but lost information on species diversity and dynamics. Decreasing in ocean pH is only one of many future global changes that will occur at the end of this century (increase of ocean temperature, sea level rise, eutrophication etc.). The interaction between these factors and OA could exacerbate the community and ecosystem effects showed by this thesis.

Résumé :
The main aim of this thesis was to determine how marine metazoans might persist as ocean acidification (OA) conditions intensify. This was done using a combination of field surveys, field transplants and laboratory experiments with polychaetes from a site where volcanically-derived CO2 gas bubbles through the seafloor and drives the seawater pH down, resulting in a marine ecosystem representative of global OA projections for, or before, the year 2100. My first objective was to identify phenotypes, or traits, associated with OA tolerance (Chapter 2 and 5). To do this, I characterized the distribution of dominant calcifying polychaetes along natural pH gradients and used a comparative species recruitment trial to investigate life history traits underlying species’ OA tolerance, or vulnerability. I first found two dominant, closely related species of polychaete: Pileolaria militaris Claparède, 1870 and Simplaria sp. (Serpulidae, Spirorbinae). I then found that increased fecundity and rapid settlement are important traits in determining species’ abilities to persist in low pH environments (Chapter 2). Afterwhich, I investigated the life history traits of the non-calcifying polychaete, Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin & Milne Edwards, 1834), of one of the few species from the low pH site known to have broadcasting, pelagic development. I performed breeding experiments on P. dumerilii collected in both ambient and low pH sites and found that specimens from the low pH site were actually the direct developing brooder sister species, Platynereis massiliensis (Moquin-Tandon, 1869). By reanalayzing the distributions of both species at each site using genetic barcoding, I found clear evidence that direct development and brooding are dominant traits at low pH site, and for OA persistence (Chapter 5). My second objective was to use reciprocal transplant experiments to compare the relative importance of local adaptation and/or plasticity as potential mechanisms responsible for the differential tolerances of populations of the polychaete species Simplaria sp. to low pH. Laboratory transplants indicate that a local adaptation response occurred through genetic accommodation in the Simplaria sp. population from the low pH site. However, neither local adaptation nor plasticity appeared responsible for this species natural low pH persistence when assessed in situ (Chapter 3 & 4). My final objective was to create a framework using the polychaete vent model to identify other types of marine metazoans that are likely to be able to adapt to, and survive, under the predicted environmental conditions (Chapter 5). I overviewed the life history strategies of all dominant polychaetes in the low pH sites, and related trends in their life history strategies to those of other marine invertebrates. Brooding and direct development appear to be key traits for species likely to persist in future oceans pH. I conclude by summarizing how research regarding evolutionary responses may be advanced to add confidence to our projections of future marine metazoan responses.

Résumé :
The historical and archaeological record identifies Pithekoussai (island of Ischia, Italy, VIII cent. BCE - III cent. CE) as the first Greek settlement in Italy (Strabo Geographia V-4-9), afterwards followed by more extensive Greek migrations characterizing the rise of Magna Grecia. The aim of this study is to test the multi-ethnicity of Pithekoussai's community through the anthropological and isotopic analysis, mainly by the 87Sr/86Sr ratio analysis performed on dental enamel (inhumed individuals) and the pars petrosa of the temporal bone (cremated and inhumed individuals).

Oxygen fugacity of Earth’s mantle is one of the most debated issues of petrology. While is evident that the arc-related magmas are more oxidized than MORB and intraplate magmas, however, is not yet possible to produce a model that can uniquely determine this thermodynamic parameter for the depth of the Earth. Furthermore, there is not a clear cause that create this difference of redox conditions between volcanic products. Recently, several experimental models based on the V partitioning between olivine and mafic melt were published and proposed as tools for investigating the redox state of mantle melts for different geodynamic environments. During this PhD we have applied different oxybarometers on natural products, including many V-fO2 models, in order to compute the redox state of some volcanic products and compare the results obtained from different oxybarometers. Here, we selected Mt. Etna and Ischia island in order to investigate the redox conditions of an intraplate and a subduction-related magmatism. Samples were selected from the most primitive eruptions from both volcanoes (FS eruption, for Mt. Etna and Vateliero Thepra for Ischia). Melt inclusions and relative host olivines major elements were analyzed using EMPA, while trace elements were measured using LA ICP-MS. Finally, we studied Hyblean xenoliths from literature data. The chosen volcanic systems have been studied in the past, and our results are in good agreement with literature data. This evidence allows us to propose V-oxybarometers as strong tools for the redox computing. Moreover, the relationship between some trace element ratios and the computed redox state leads to support the hypothesis that address the cause of the different redox state of intraplate and arc primary magmas to contamination of the magmatic source. This hypothesis is in contrast with studies which address the different redox state due to magma evolution processes.

The church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Casamicciola Terme, Ischia Island, Italy, represents one of the very rare examples of the particular building technique of the Borbonic Baraccato system, one of the earliest engineered earthquake resisting systems developed in Southern Italy between the 18th and 19th Centuries. Its unicity lies on the materials adopted. It presents Neapolitan yellow tuff-masonry walls embraced in iron frames, while the traditional Baraccato system utilizes embedded timber frames in the masonry texture. The church was stroke by the recent earthquake of 21st August, 2017 with epicenter in Casamicciola Terme. Though the moderately high seismic intensity of the event, the post-seismic surveys carried out in the frame of the emergency protocols did not evidence relevant structural damage thanks to the constructive system. The present work aimed at developing a better understanding of the structural behavior of the church. The scope was addressed by developing a three-dimensional numerical Finite Element Model (FEM) in order to assess the structural safety of the building under gravitational and seismic loads performing advanced numerical analyses. The modelling workflow has been guided by the following preliminary tasks which are considered mandatory to rely on the outcomes of the numerical analyses: historic review and definition of the territorial framework in terms of geology and seismicity proneness; geometrical overview of the church and description of the structural elements main features, understanding also the level of knowledge reached for the structural details; description of the observed pre- and post-seismic damage; definition of the modelling strategies to adopt in the numerical model and the material characteristics to use; modal identification of the structure through the post-processing of ambient vibration tests performed under operational conditions; calibration of the numerical model. The execution of preliminary safety assessment of the structure was carried out through the application of nonlinear static analyses to different model versions, capable of describing a possible range of responses of the building under horizontal loads. The numerical models considered for the analyses namely involved the response of the structure under the assumption of a behavior mainly governed by the non-linear response of the masonry walls, discarding the contribution of the Baraccato frames (lower-bound response), conversely a second model was analyzed by taking the response of the frames as infinitely elastic (upper-bound response). The work accomplished the full implementation of the numerical model and the performance of sensitivity analyses based on its response with regards to the uncertainties and the modelling strategies adopted. However, the refinement of the knowledge of structural details, deeper investigation of the influence of different modelling strategies for the Baracccato system, more experimental tests, and the improvement of ambient vibration tests are recommended in the scope of executing non-linear dynamic analyses that could comply with the effective observed post-seismic damage and better define the seismic safety assessment of the church.

Survey and digital modeling: a critical approach for the enhancement of the Castle of IschiaThe development and dissemination of ICT have also influenced the cultural heritage sector. In the last decade, for this reason and not only, the way of doing scientific research, documentation and enhancement has quickly changed, to such a degree to question the real benefits brought by the digitization and virtualization of the historical buildings, in the fields just mentioned. The paper is part of a research field linked to the analysis of the metric and formal reliability of 3D integrated surveying and digital modeling of architectural heritage, and to the critical evaluation of the photogrammetry and laser scanning as tools for the deep knowledge and for the dissemination of the object of study. In particular, the focus is on the majestic Aragonese Castle of Ischia –whose origins date back to the fifth century BC, located in the eastern part of the island, on an area of over 5 hectares– and on the ruins of the Cathedral of the Assumption, of the fourteenth century, preserved inside. Starting from particular analysis and coming to general methodological considerations, the research had different objectives: comparing qualitatively and quantitatively the goodness of image-based and range-based surveys of single environments, determining the spatial location of some volumes compared to others, analyzing the “Castle-Cathedral system” through the development of virtual reality applications built from photo-modeling and laser scanning at the urban scale.
