Résumé :
Water electrolysis is expected to play a crucial role to the transition towards a hydrogen-based, low carbon economy. Among the various technologies for water electrolysis technologies, the one using proton exchange membranes (PEM) holds promise due to its high efficiency, load flexibility and compact design. However, the acidic environment in the PEM creates a harsh operating environment which entails the use of scarce and expensive metals (Pt and Ir) which account for 38% of the cost of a catalyst coated membrane (CCM). Moreover, the high scarcity of Ir is considered as the grand challenge of this technology.1 To relieve high raw material costs and to mitigate the Ir-dependence of PEM electrolysis, the development of advanced CCMs with improved Ir utilization is essential. Most of studies so far have focused on the development of high-structured catalysts, either by maximizing the Ir dispersion with using high surface area supports or by using alternative catalyst nanostructures.2 In all these conventional routes, the CCM manufacturing process is multi-step and primarily ink-based. Steps include ink preparation (from metallic nanoparticles), ink application onto the PEM to yield the catalyst-coated product, and several intermediate drying stages. The use of improved catalyst layer manufacturing techniques has been proposed as an alternative route to produce catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) with low Ir loadings, without compromising in activity or durability. However, such concepts are less represented in literature. Despite this, the use of vapor-based processes for the manufacturing of nanomaterials for PEM electrolysers has key benefits over ink-based processes including the simplification of the production process, the reduction of catalyst loading, and the deposition of more uniform thin layers of material.3 In this work, we prepared CCMs using a solvent free, gas-phase method, comprising spark ablation and impaction,4 to produce iridium-based nanoparticles (IrNPs) for PEM water electrolysers. IrNPs were produced at ambient temperature and pressure conditions in the gas phase using Ir rods as the nanomaterial source. The nanoparticle aerosol was then directed towards a nozzle and deposited onto a Nafion 115 membrane via inertial impaction. By securing the membrane on an XY-stage, a 4 cm2 catalyst coating was printed. The Ir content on the Nafion membrane was controlled by varying the printing speed. The prepared CCMs were characterized using RBS, ICP, SEM, HR-TEM, XRD, and XPS. The CCMs prepared via spark ablation comprised of a homogeneous, dense, porous layer of amorphous IrO2 nanoparticles (Figure 1a) with an average particle size of 2 nm. The Ir-based CCMs were employed in a single-cell PEM water electrolyser and complete performance assessment was performed at 60 °C, focusing both on activity and durability. Our results show that the CCMs prepared with spark ablation outperform the benchmark (commercial) CCM (Figure 1b) despite using considerably less Ir (Figure 1c). Specifically, up to 5-fold improvement in Ir utilization (i.e. 5-fold decrease in Ir-specific power density) was obtained. To assess durability, both transient and dynamic service conditions were simulated by using different time-profiles for the power input. The overall profile of the constant load durability test indicated that irreversible changes occurred at the CCM during the first 30 h, while afterwards a stable degradation rate of 0.05 mV h-1 was sustained for >60 h. A similar degradation rate was also obtained with the benchmark CCM. Based on this rate and assuming a cut-off voltage of 2.2 V, the expected lifetime of our CCM is 10,000 h, which is the minimum requirement for industrial operation. Overall, our results showcase the feasibility of the spark ablation technology as a scalable and efficient method to achieve reduced Ir loading and better performing CCMs for PEM water electrolysis. Taking into account the simplicity of the process, this technology has also the potential to relieve the high CCM manufacturing costs of conventional approaches, which currently account for 42% of the total CCM cost.1 IRENA, Green Hydrogen Cost Reduction – Scaling up electrolysers to meet the 1.5 °C climate goal, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Abu Dhabi, (2020). Résumé :

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę interpretacji 21 pieśni Ireny Wieniawskiej (powstałych w latach 1911-1927), wykorzystujących teksty Paula Verlaine’a. We Francji poznała dorobek impresjonistów (m.in.

The price of electricity produced from renewable sources has sharply sunk in the last decade, making these a cheaper choice than newly built thermal power plants in almost all parts of the world [1]. The missing link towards the full decarbonisation of the energy sector is a crossover vector that can account for the intrinsic intermittency of these renewable energy sources. Hydrogen seems to be the best candidate for this, particularly if produced using water electrolysis powered by excess energy from renewable sources. In particular, the load capability and high power density of polymer electrolyte water electrolysis (PEWE) renders this technology an excellent match to these renewables’ sporadic nature [2]. However, the need for scarce Ir to catalyze the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) taking place in PEWE anodes hinders the large scale application of this technology [3]. Therefore, a better understanding of the OER mechanism on Ir-based electrocatalysts is needed to guide catalyst design and decrease the efficiency losses related to this reaction. Over the last decades, the OER mechanism on Ir-based materials has been extensively investigated through operando/in-situ X-ray absorption as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XAS, XPS) [4-7]. Despite enormous efforts, there is still a lack of consensus regarding the oxidation state of Ir under OER conditions and the nature of the OER-active sites. Therefore, in this work we employed operando modulation excitation XAS to study the OER mechanism on several calcined and uncalcined Ir-oxide catalysts. By combining this modulation excitation approach with phase sensitive analysis, we enhanced the sensitivity of XAS towards oxidation state changes that are otherwise undiscernible on low surface area materials, such as calcined IrO2. To derive more precise information from these phase resolved spectra, standard materials with Ir oxidation states ≥ +5 were also characterized. The comparison of the demodulated, operando spectra of a given material with the corresponding difference between its low-potential spectrum and the standard compounds’ spectra indicates that all oxides reach a maximum Ir oxidation state of +5 under OER conditions. In addition, multivariate curve resolution (MCR) analysis was employed to extract kinetic information from these period averaged spectra. This analysis unveiled that the oxidation of the surface iridium proceeds at the same rate as its reduction in the case of highly OER-active materials, while reduction is slower than oxidation for the less OER-active samples. In summary, this contribution presents novel insights on the Ir oxidation under potential control, and in doing so also features the capabilities of modulation excitation XAS and MCR to elucidate kinetics of electrochemical reactions. 2008-2009

This chapter examines Ashes and Miracles: A Polish Journey, by Irena F. Karafilly. This book details the author's unexpected and deeply personal response to her visit to Poland. Her decision to write this particular book was not the result of previous planning; it was more like an impulse. The chapter shows how Karafilly's journey seems to have two ultimate goals. One is to capture the essence of Poland and its people, and the other is to uncover the nature of her own relationship with that country. While pursuing those aims, she experiences excitement and even delight, but also anxiety, unexpected sadness, and disappointment.

A classic example of C-H functionalization is the familiar NBS bromination of a benzylic site. Recent updates of this approach allow for direct alkoxylation (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 7824) and net amination (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 1863). For the amination of simple aliphatic H’s, Holger F. Bettinger of Ruhr-Universität Bochum developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 4744) the boryl azide 2. The insertion with 1 proceeded to give a statistical mixture of the nitrene insertion products 3 and 4. The tethered C-H functionalization devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 7247) by Phil S. Baran of Scripps-La Jolla is selective, as in the conversion to 5 to 6, but appears to be limited to tertiary and benzylic C-H sites. Michael P. Doyle of the University of Maryland established (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 4317) an elegant protocol for the oxidation of an alkyne such as 7 to the ynone 8. Note that the oxidation did not move the alkyne. Marta Catellani of the Università di Parma reported (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2008, 350, 565) the intriguing Pd-catalyzed conversion of 9 to 10. Under mild conditions, it might likely be possible to hydrolyze the vinyl ether to reveal the phenol 11. Another way of looking at this overall transformation would be to consider the ether 10 to be a protected form of the aldehyde 12. C-H activation can also lead to C-C bond formation. Irena S. Akhrem of the Nesmeyanov Institute, Moscow, described (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 1399) a hydride-abstraction protocol for three-component coupling of a hydrocarbon 13 , an amine 14 , and CO, leading to the homologated amide 15. Hua Fu of Tsinghua University, Beijing, showed (J. Org. Chem. 2008 , 73, 3961) that oxidation of an amine 16 led to an intermediate that could be coupled with an alkyne 17 to give the propargylic amine 18. Products 15 and 18 are the result of sp2 and sp coupling, respectively. C-H functionalization leading to sp3 -sp3 coupling is less common. Jin-Quan Yu of Scripps/La Jolla found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 7190) that activation of the N-methoxy amide 19 in the presence of the alkyl boronic acid 20 gave smooth coupling, to 21.

Résumé :
Irene and Vernon Castle were stewards of the transition from Victorian to modern dancing, and Fitzgerald uses this period as the setting for two series of stories. The rigid rules of Victorian dances gave way to a more improvisation-based style, and this chapter argues that a similar shift can be seen in Fitzgerald’s manipulation of short story formulae. This chapter draws parallels between the production lines of Taylorist management philosophies and the dance manuals that broke dances down into fragmented gestures and machinistic imitative steps, contextualising this as part of a wider cultural shift from the artisinal to the mass produced. In the course of his search to regain the popularity of his explosive debut at the beginning of the 1920s, Fitzgerald parodies certain of his early heroines in his later work. The use of such parodic ‘ragging’ and syncopation draws upon musical techniques that emerged from African American culture, such as jazz. Rather than reading these reimaginings as symptomatic of Fitzgerald’s dwindling talents or financial desperation, this chapter argues that this self-parody serves creative aims as well as constituting Fitzgerald’s subtle criticism of the public’s insatiable demand for the formulaic flapper stories favoured by the ‘slick’ magazines.

Résumé :
Creation of an autonomous Serbian state became possible thanks to the consistency of the Russian government in advocating for the relentless implementation of the articles of bilateral Russian-Turkish agreements by the Ottoman Porte. These were the articles of the Treaty of Bucharest (1812), the Akkerman Convention (1826) and the Treaty of Adrianople (1829). All these documents implied granting Serbia autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. These were the demands put forward by the Russian envoys in Constantinople, i.e. G.A. Stroganov, A.I. Ribopierre. Later, they were supported by A.P. Butenev, during his work in the Ottoman capital the Turkish government issued hatt-i sharifs in favour of the Serbian people. It would seem that the Russian envoys and government could expect gratitude from the Serbian leaders. However, after Serbia received autonomous rights, Prince Miloš Obrenović I of Serbia chose a different path for his country. The interference of the European powers in the internal affairs of the Serbian principality, their promises made to Miloš, who strived to remain the sovereign ruler f Serbia ― all these led to the fact that the Prince did not welcome the very presence of Russian diplomatic representatives in Serbia. The crisis in Russian-Serbian relations was closely related to the re-focusing of his policy towards Great Britain, which was facilitated by the activities of the British consul in Belgrade, J. Hodges. Russian-Serbian relations were dramatically undermined during the final years of Miloš Obrenović’s reign and led to further decline in the early 1840s.
