Texte intégralThis research work entitled “Corporeity, education and disability. Research perspectives on the use of the Italian Sign Language” analyses the historical, educational and normative development of the Sign Language using a theoretical-argumentative methodology with a descriptive-comparative character and then examines the current research perspectives which confirm the potentiality of using body experience as a possible instrument to facilitate the educational process and a valid support for the education thanks to the use of innovative software such as “The software and phonological bimanual dactylology” approved by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. In synthesis this research work analyses, after a short historical description of Deaf educational system abroad and in our country, the Sign Language with its formational parameters (place, orientation, configuration, movement) and non-manual components (body position, eyes, head and back movements, facial expressions) allowing to define their multiplanarity or rather the use of the signing area (which expands from the extreme part of the head to the waist and from one shoulder to another) in its 4 dimensions: the three spatial dimensions accessible to the signer‟s body (front-back, above-below, right-left) and temporal dimension (the production time of the sign enunciated)... Biagini, Marta. « L'interprète en interaction dans les tribunaux. Une approche dialogique ». Thesis, Paris 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA030110.
Texte intégralOur research focuses on interpreter-mediated examinations as situated oral exchanges and discursive practices in a specific institutional context, i.e. the courtroom. In contemporary societies, among the various situations where interpreters act and dialogue in face-to face interactions, the judiciary context proves to be one of those institutional domains where highly formal and normative practices take place. Examinations are very coded exchanges. Starting from the hypothesis that the tension which develops between laws and norms at work in this frame and the discursive productions by speakers directly dialoguing and interacting, whose representations and goals may consistently differ, may have a double effect on the interpreter-mediated event, we further investigate how : some specific interactional and discourse patterns realize in a such ritualized and normative context, attempting to understand if they are typical of interpreter-mediated interactions in general or of the specific examinations we observe ; and speakers’ identities, institutional roles, their personal goals and the specific themes concerned have an influence on these practices, producing very peculiar and singular patterns of sense-making. Hence, focusing on face-to-face interpreting practices, the dialogical and discourse approach we adopt allows to take into account : from one side, what relates to the dialogal dimension of the interaction, pertaining to a dialogue between two (or more) co-present interlocutors and the definitions of their identities, from what pertains to the dialogical one, having to do with dialogism or dialogicality in the more abstract senses. Given that understanding is related to responding, interpreters are seen as speakers actively involved in dialogue. The ways speakers leave traces of their presence in the utterances they produce, while they’re doing the interacting, and, particularly, the way in which the interpreter’s presence is sensed through thar interlinguistic reformulation of the other’s words which is translation gives access to the way in which sense-making is jointly created in the framework of a highly ritualized activity type such as examinations in the courtroom. In the end, interpreted-mediated examinations may be thought of as changing practices on a more/less continuum, going from : the cases where the interpreter translates as a reporter using the 1st person, using linguistics strategies allowing him/her to assume full responsibility for the words uttered without showing it; to all those cases of variation on the expected pattern which, at different degrees, let emerge his/her presence in the interpreting process; to the production of discourses for which s/he is entirely responsible, acting as a an autonomous speaker. These collectively constructed events may therefore suggest that there is a dynamic relation between expected practices in the discourse context and their actual realization. Interpreter-mediated examinations prove to be per se speech events, namely very specific exchanges with their often hybrid dynamics, within which all interlocutors - including the interpreter – dialogically contribute to understanding and to the creation of meaning
Thesis, Nancy 2, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009NAN20012.
Texte intégralArtist contracts analysis reveals a dual protection: protection of the employed person but also protection in respect of rights related to copyright. Indeed, while contracts of employment are generally based on a work force, the artist contract is based on the person of the artist and the object from the employment relationship bears the imprint of his personality. The artist's employment agreement takes two worlds: artistic and economic. This passage of the artist of the artistic universe to economic reality doesn?t take place without the presence of many professionals of the show, the artist in creating economic partners or without artistic agents and managers that shape the artist to the needs of the market, the expectations of its economic partners. However this balance created between artistic world and economic universe might well be questioned by the development of new technologies
Tettamanti, Valeria <1993>. « L'enquete inquiete. Representer, connaitre, interpreter : poetiques et postures auctoriales (Zola, Capuana et Pardo Bazan) ». Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2022. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/10311/1/tettamanti_valeria_tesi.pdf.
Texte intégralMy thesis investigates the forms, modes and issues associated with the notion of 'enquiry' in the discourses and poetics of Émile Zola, Luigi Capuana and Emilia Pardo Bazán. It will do so first by taking seriously the ambition for 'total enquiry' in the European naturalist novel around 1880, such as it is considered by Zola's credo of “tout dire”, by Pardo Bazán's idea of the “ancha, completa y perfecta” form and by Capuana's bulimic eclecticism. As a corollary, the reader of the time, in search of “narrative”, experiences an aesthetic practise marked by disciplinary porosity and the diversity of formats and media. Through epistemocriticism, sociocriticism and "historicised semiology", the aim is therefore to question the relationships between the scientific and the literary, the fictional and the factual, the true and the false, and their epistemological and ideological presuppositions, which the three authors define and redefine in the light of their postures and their specific strategies of affirmation. In line with the disciplinary “decompartmentalization” at work at the time, from the point of view of both reception and production, the assembled corpus brings together novels, chronicles, theoretical and critical texts, but also "scholarly" texts written or consulted by the authors. Through all of these perspectives, this thesis intends to shed light, through a comparative approach, on the historical singularity of an “anxious” enquiry in the last third of the 19th century.

Texte intégralThe study provides an analysis of imperial discourse on time, and especially the past of Rome, from the founder of Principate, Augustus, until Constantine. It relies on various documents (literature, numismatic, epigraphy, archeology and architecture) in order to appreciate at best the reconstruction of history by the emperors. The emperor has to be endowed with memory and to know the past, which leads to define it and its significance in Rome. In a second step, a detailed study of imperial references to the history of Rome is presented for each period, from the origins to the immediate predecessor. The last part is devoted to the development by the emperor of continuity with the history of Rome, especially the history of Principate, with a global vision and integration in history

Texte intégralOur research focuses a comparative analysis of the performances of Liszt's Sonata in b minor. We analysed twenty-five recordings by pianists grouped into five piano schools : Hungarian, French, Russian, American and German. We compared the deviations of the performers from the score and the differences between the individual performances, based on a selection of seven parameters that allowed us to characterise each of them. A double analysis was made: "by ear" and with the aid of acomputer. Our research has shown the importance of several complementary factors of influence : education, the period during which the pianists lived and created, the artists' temperaments and their artistic individualities. At the end of our research, we demonstrated the existence of specific features within each of the national piano schools, and also of some features that characterise the performing style of each generation

Texte intégralThe recent discovery of the Higgs boson completes the standard model of particle physics, but no compelling signal for physics beyond the standard model has been observed despite the numerous searches performed by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Nevertheless, the hierarchy problem and the observation of dark matter are compelling arguments to study theories predicting new states at the weak scale, and a main effort has been directed towards understanding the negative search results and their implications for such weak scale new physics scenarios. Simplified models have become a standard in the interpretation of LHC searches for supersymmetry (SUSY), aiming at maximal model independence. More recently a similar approach was adopted for the interpretation of dark matter searches. The success of this approach is due to the fact that the small set of free parameters relates to the observables in LHC searches in a clear way, allowing an efficient optimisation of search strategies. Moreover, generic models can be projected on a simplified model description giving an intuitive understanding of the constraints on the parameter space, and providing a fast test against LHC constraints. As the relation between generic model parameters and simplified models is generally not straightforward, sophisticated computational tools are required to facilitate such a projection. This thesis explores the various aspects of simplified model interpretations of LHC searches and how they can be used to understand the results and bridge the gap between theoretical descriptions and experimental observations. In particular the software tool SModelS is presented, a tool that automates the mapping of generic models onto SUSY-like simplified model components, and that allows direct tests against corresponding experimental limits in the included database. Under certain assumptions SModelS can be used to constrain a wide class of new physics models with a dark matter candidate. These assumptions and some explicit tests are discussed in detail, followed by studies of (non-minimal) supersymmetric models using SModelS for the fast evaluation of constraints from SUSY searches. These studies highlight the capacity as well as the limitations of using simplified model results to study generic models. Finally regarding simplified models for dark matter searches, scenarios with a spin-2 mediator are studied in detail

Texte intégral“Urban Revolution and citizens’ rights”, the title of the thesis, can not be assigned to a specific academic discipline. I think it fits into Urban Geography, but also Urban Planning, that is to say intervention on the territory, and Politics (not to be confused with “political science”), i.e. giving points of view in all of the writings, as well as Sociology and Law (these disciplines were my majors at the University) and offers a historical view, present through the text. Needles to say that I always felt closer to Gramsci and his historicism then to structuralism that marked my generation (in excess) and never attracted me, although in my first works, written 40 years ago, one could notice its influence. The first part of the thesis is analytical and general and exposes the failure of the promises of urban revolution of the past decades. It focuses on the metropolitan city or urbanized regions. It also includes a reflection on the way Urbanism has been taught, a result of my experience in the Master course that I directed at the University of Barcelona from 2000 to 2006 and later at Open University of Catalonia. This part is written from a relational perspective between political power and urban processes in their socio-economical and territorial dimension. The second part is based on a critical analysis of urbanism and is written from a perspective of the relationship between public space and social movements. The question of public space, related to the right to the city, has been a principal axis of my thinking in the past 10 years. The annexes (14 altogether), allow us to present a specific analysis that complement the base text. The third part consists of only one chapter, but much longer (90 pages), that has been written quite recently and it returns to the topics from the first chapter now from the perspective of an economic-finance crisis that began in 2007-2008, a crisis whose roots are largely to be found in speculative urbanization and real estate bubble. It is a rather “political” chapter. The three annexes that complete this part are also representative of the author’s ideology and have been written at different moments. I also added a complementary text that turned to be a second volume of 300 pages. It is a sort of autobiography about the way I learned what I know about the cities. I also added a long list of my publications (books and articles) and other works (such as apports, plans, projects, etc.) produced in the last almost 50 years.

Texte intégralAccording to our conception of interpretation, only true Saussurean texts are ables to validate or invalidate the hypotheses on Saussurean Linguistics. Thus, in this study we explore the Saussurean corpus with the aim to propose a non-contradictory interpretation of Saussurean Linguistic. The field of linguistics, the particularity of objects at all scales, how men confer a reality to these objects and how we, linguists, are building a scientific representation of this reality through our points of views, the dialectic relation between languages and language, and the scientific parameters of the object, the essence of language as seen through its constituent dualities, are some of the topics covered in this thesis. The dissertation contains three parts: In the first part Saussurean Linguistics is examined through the corpus whose principles of constitution and interpretation are described in the first chapter. The second chapter offers a confrontation between the original Saussurean linguistic and some other Linguistic theories called “Saussurean"; it ends by an overview of the "internal divisions" of this science, such as formulated by Saussure. The third and the fourth chapter offer a consideration of two fundamental issues concerning the object of linguistic science and the properties of this object whose nature is essentially dual. The second part is devoted to the characteristics of the object; it questioned the relationship between the real object “language”, "a very complex phenomenon straddled in several areas, and the language object of study as presented by various sciences, and which is a construct. Thus, the fifth chapter discusses the construction of the object at global and local level ("language" et his elementary units), by the linguistic point of view which determinate the field of the science of language. The sixth chapter examines the relationship between theory and reality, highlighting the criterion of linguistic reality proposed by Saussure who, recalling that the "real home" of language is in the speaker, instantiates the point of views of speakers. The seventh chapter provides a confrontation between linguistic approach and semiotic approach by observing the sharing of ideas and historical heritages between these two sciences that reflects the work of Saussure. The last chapter calls for a resumption of the Saussurean epistemological project which, a hundred years after its formulation, demonstrated a surprising modernity able to give new chance to linguistic science. The third part gives annexed five working papers: 1 The list of courses professed by Ferdinand de Saussure with regard to the notes of students, 2 The organization of the Introduction to the 2nd course as frame of Saussurean Linguistics, 3 A genetic edition of a note related to the conceptualization of the term "parole”, 4 A genetic edition of sheets 255-256 from new Saussurean manuscripts that address the issue of linguistic identity as "irreducible basis" and "entry point in consideration of the particular facts", 5 A sample of the philological reconstruction of courses on general linguistics

Texte intégralThe growing number of cultural professions and the developing of new jobs seemingly testify that this economic sector is expanding, while it really is going through a crisis. Indeed, for twenty years, it is the population we call “intermittents du spectacle” (self-employed actors and technicians) who benefited from this economic development. In 1990, they were 40 000. Today, they represent more than 100 000 people. Based on the idea of the socio-economic and professional heterogeneity of this population, this research tries to seize this group’s dynamic through different angles such as work experience, collective action and personal engagement. In fact, for more than twenty years, every reconsideration of the specific compensation system, granted to the “intermittents du spectacle”, generated strong mobilizations. For that matter, this system stands as an individual and collective base in the centre of their professional identity. Therefore, the welfare state has a direct impact on the structuring of the professional group itself. Analyzing it gives us a glimpse of how social practices can re-appropriate laws giving them a specific meaning. Work and employment, personal risk’s and independence, defensive and reflexive strategies, state protection and individual liberty, personal experiences and collective actions: the “intermittents du spectacle” social conflict deeply questions society and the group itself, while the institutional regulation modes are breaking up on the level of the social welfare system purposes as well as on the level of its political representation

Jesus Christ and the human person: Human dignity and grace mission from the Gaudium et Spes 22 is the title of the analytic- theoretical research presented here. Within the Theology ande Religious Experience research line, this dissertation conclusive master's in systematic theology seeks to expose and reflect on relevant aspects of the Imago Dei doctrine taken up by the Second Vatican Council, which was subsequently, the International Theological Commission study objecty. The Imago Dei manifested in Christi historicity gives the Imago hominis is through it, a call for humanization. In view of the Christian presence in the world as an expression of faith, this research sougth put pluralistic landscape of contemporary society. Based on the concept of human dignity in view of a dialogue to safeguard and promote life, this research shows, from Jesus Christ, a way of understanding the human mystery. Facing the challenges of human development and Christology as anthropology, proposes the Christian life, in an eschatological perspective, as participation in the Word Incarnate mystery interpreting the notae Ecclesiae as Christianorum notae.

Texte intégralIn the last few decades, Europe has witnessed a number of significant social changes, which have affected both healthcare institutions and the services which they offer to the population, due to the substantial immigration flows, which have mainly come from African and Eastern-European countries. Linguistic assistance provided by interpreters and cultural mediators has proved to be of fundamental importance in helping patients, from these countries, communicate effectively with medical staff in order to ensure the quickest possible solution to their diagnosed health problems, and to carry out successful check-ups and follow-ups. The need to increase interpreting assistance in the medical field has merged with the necessity of creating a cultural bridge between institutions and immigrants, who often speak languages which interpreters did not learn during their training courses (Baraldi & Gavioli, 2012). The essential goal of this study is to analyze two different types of oral dialogical translation, which are being used increasingly more frequently within the healthcare field: cultural mediation (Gavioli, 2009) and ad hoc interpreting (Bührig & Meyer, 2004). In this respect, six interactions were selected and transcribed, three of which are with an ad hoc interpreter, and three with a cultural mediator. The interactions developed during pre-natal gynaecological check-ups. The obstetrical-gynaecological field setting was chosen in order to create a reference context with a common baseline. All conversations were recorded in a hospital in Northern Italy and the protagonists were a doctor (obstetrician or gynaecologist), occasionally assisted by another healthcare professional, a patient (at different pregnancy stages), and the patient’s husband (in the case of the ad hoc interpreting), or a cultural mediator. The languages used were Italian and English. All the patients, as well as their husbands, in the case of the ad hoc interactions, came from Western African countries, whereas the cultural mediators are bilingual, who also have an immigrant background. The results of the research highlight that, despite the communicative limits of ad hoc interpreting (Cambridge, 1999; Pöchhacker & Kadric, 1999; Wulf & Schmiedbach, 2010), when the interpreter is not only untrained, but also a relative of the patient, the interaction constructed by the different participants display certain features, such as intimacy, familiarity and empathy, which favor the communication process, even though the patient rarely takes part in the conversation. On the other hand, the cultural mediator asks questions which facilitate the most detailed answers possible from the patient, while showing understanding towards the patient’s condition. However, the mediator’s actions do appear to serve the institution’s needs. In conclusion, ad hoc interpreting could be used in those situations where a disease affects not only the patient, but also his/her family members, or in situations in which making the patient feel welcome is the primary concern. Conversely, cultural mediation seems to be more suitable in situations where the interaction is centred on the patient’s illness and the necessary steps which are needed to cure them.

Texte intégralCollective administration presents considerable advantages. Most of the time, authors or artists are isolated individuals. Free market rules would probably lead to very low incomes for them. Doctrine on the whole agrees on the fact that individual administration of rights would induce considerable practical problems for the author or the “isolated” artist. The incapacity for the holders of such rights to manage these rights alone requires them in practice to use the services of a collective administration body. Collective administration bodies can be defined as follows: « specific non trading companies whose partners must be owners of copyrights which are pooled for common administration purposes. The collective administration mission of these bodies mainly consists in controlling and defending such rights, promoting its members' interests and delivering licences for the benefit of their members, and finally collecting and allocating licence remunerations ». Obviously, these bodies are at the junction of several laws on the common base of civil law: intellectual property law, corporate law, competition law, etc. And other specific laws at different degrees. In addition, on the basis of some court decisions, it seems that a specific rule is applicable to these bodies in the form of an "ultra special law” i. E. "collective administration companies law”. Concerning these bodies, the partitioning between various laws leads to a blurred system. The goal of this thesis is to clarify all the rules applicable to collective administration bodies and more precisely to the relationship between these bodies and their members. Finally, the purpose of this study is to demonstrate the consistent legal form surrounding this relationship

Texte intégralOur research focuses on the professionalization of French to Vietnamese - and vice versa - interpretation and translation students is part of the historical context of this training subject in Vietnam. How and in what context can we train students to the complexity of translation as it is perceived and imposed today? This question is particularly involved with the University education context in Vietnam, which is the subject of investigation in this thesis, because translating professionalization has hitherto been absent from the university curriculum, despite of its emerging concern.First, we study what the act of translation consists of, with a view to discerning its nature and specificities. Secondly, we present two surveys: one conducted in academic institutions to study translation-interpretation training curricula, the other conducted with professional Vietnamese translators and interpreters. Thirdly, we will compare the training curricula with the professional practices in reality in order to analyze the difficulties and challenges that would be faced by university education of translating and interpreting professions

Texte intégralThe research presented in this doctoral thesis is situated in the field of language didactics and deals with the pedagogical exploitation of literature as a component of the target culture. The research presented is based on in-class experiments carried out with foreign students learning French as a foreign language during a stay in France. The students in question were not specialists in literature, and the experiment consisted in a series of activities and projects that focused on literary references that were present in French journalistic sources (both within titles and the texts themselves). The hypothesis that guided this research is that the deciphering of cultural references that contain a value of social usage of literature corresponding to an accessible level for the learners of French as a foreign language facilitates the development of the interpretative component of their cultural competences. The first experiment respected the current task-based orientation of language didactics. Through monitoring the principal stages involved in the completion of these cultural projects, which were focused on French authors (Proust, Molière), two tasks were revealed as particularly characteristic: literature search and observation/analysis of documents. The second experiment examined the use of acquired literary knowledge. More specifically, this part of the research project analyzed, for native speakers of French, the connection between shared references and argumentation patterns found in three articles taken from the French press. The observations that resulted from this part of the research project made it possible to measure the impact of the learners' developing literary culture in French as a foreign language on their ability to use an interpretative competence. The analysis of oral and written productions from the learners who participated in this project reveals certain traces of the relationship between literary references/interpretation/acquisition of French, which can be used to create situations in teaching above and beyond the teaching of or with literature. Indeed, without overstating the importance of the current research and recognizing its limitations, the results may interest teachers of French as a foreign language who wish to help their students to develop the acquisition of a portion of Culture (history, arts, ...) based on natives' own use and representation

Texte intégralIn an era of technological and symbolic changes, the postmodernity finds his fervor. In this, the archaic and technological development come into synergy, the time returns and, therefore, the myths are present today, telling stories and behaviors, giving rhythm to life and integrating into the everyday. In this era, the world finds itself and enchants itself again, the vertical becomes horizontal and social ties are not merely soil and blood, forming symbolic and emotionally. It is in this context that we understand the presence of Get?lio Vargas in social networks. For that, we enter the story of the former president and the communication actions developed in their governments. We seek to work references theoretical notions of myth and imaginary. We researched the development witnessed in the digital age, where the age of mass culture becomes the era of digital culture. We observe the convergence of medias and the role of technology, internet and culture in such transformation. The Internet becomes and ceases to be seen exclusively as a means, where the messages transiting from only one sender to one or more receivers. In this context, social networks become our squares. This is where the tribes meet, interact, talk, agree or disagree. That's where social ties now exist, or are strengthened. Brazilian society is in social networks and Get?lio Vargas too because, between conversations and interactions, imaginarys are shared and nourished, myths are revived, stories are told, and daily life is told and observed. It is in these squares (villages), which groups (tribes) who enjoy or repudiate the former president meet. Get?lio Vargas is characterized as the totem of these tribes, worshiped and stoned. Manning is a generous look, seeking common knowledge to understand the different perspectives on the object of our study, we analyzed these tribes, we understand their views of reality and their emotions, presented in their publications and talks

Texte intégralThis thesis aims at investigating the fictionalization of death in four contemporary Portuguese novels : Apari??o, by Verg?lio Ferreira; Louren?o ? nome de jogral, by Fernanda Botelho; O triunfo da morte, by Augusto Abelaira; and As intermit?ncias da morte de Jos? Saramago. These novels were analyzed according to the concept of death proposed by the philosophical studies of Martin Heiddeger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Edgar Morin, Georges Bataille, Jean Baudrillard and Maurice Blanchot among others, as well as mythic, iconographic and historical aspects of the representation of death according to the studies of Phillipe Ari?s and Johan Huizinga. Some theories of Narratology were also used in order to understand the complex relation and representation of death in Literature.

Texte intégralThis work analyzes the vocal style and technique of the principal Italian female singers of "opera seria" between 1700 and 1730. The cult of this voice was developed in Italy at the end of the XVIth century. The success of the opera as a public and commercial spectacle produce many transformations in the female singers career; At the beginning of the XVIIIth century, the vocal technique improved considerably. One of the reasons was the presence of the castrats. But the "prime donne" also amaized the public with their unique personalities and their technical accomplishement : vocal extension, virtuosity and rapidity of execution. A more precise classification of the femele voice (soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto) is also reached thanks to the ascension of the contralto voice. They becomes real "rhetoric authorities" and many operas will bear the names of legendary heroines. At the same time, it was the moment of the apogee of cross-dressing. It is a this very moment, that femele singing got all its strength and took its own way from castrats to overcome it definitely at the end of the century

Texte intégralMore than sixty years after its adoption, the Geneva Convention counts 145 States ascontracting Parties. This universal legal instrument on refugee’s status represents the lex specialis ofinternational refugee Law. Who can be a refugee? What can be his level of protection? These questionsare particularly relevant under the influence of the increasing population flows, the multiples crises andthe fight against terrorism. The current context of the Convention’s application is different than the one ofits adoption. And due to its general provisions, this Convention needs to be interpreted in order to beapplied. However, there is no sole interpreter. The States, the United Nations High Commissioner forRefugees and the International Court of Justice are indeed the official interpreters, but not the only onesensuring this mission. Not only the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons andthe National Court of Asylum play an important role in this matter, but the European Court of HumanRights and the Court of Justice of the European Union also play an expanding role. This multiplicity ofinterpreters can induce a variety of interpretations. Nevertheless, a divergent interpretation can affect thereadability and the visibility of the Convention as a refugee defining and protective legal instrument. Thepresent study constitutes an analysis of the interpreters’ contribution to the Convention’s developments. Inthis perspective, the overgrowth of European and International Human Rights Law instrument and thecomplexity of forced migration are ineluctable feature, taken into account by the interpreters, to clarify themeaning and the scope of the Convention

Texte intégralThe introduction of modern food retail formats in the emerging countries' commercial landscape raises questions on the impact it causes on the local buyers' consumption and shopping behavior. Anchored in the local culture, the persistence of traditional business coupled with the implementation of modern retail chains that put forth an ‘idealistic' image of the Western societies causes tensions on consumers' native tastes and habits. This doctoral research explores the cultural meanings given by consumers to shopping and consumption practices in these countries based on a large ethnographic qualitative study performed in Morocco. Results show that the introduction of modern sales formats in emerging markets where socio-cultural values differ from those of the importing countries causes hybrid behaviors or selective adoption practices to emerge through which consumers try to articulate contrasted codes and symbolic dimensions in an effort to give meaning to their consumption. In addition, the dual distribution system accentuates the social class game amplifying trends in social status tagging through the staging of consumption (as per Goffman) and the appropriation of the retail spaces. Furthermore, if the introduction of new retail formats is a real threat to traditional retailers, it favors by the same token the reorganization of this sector, the diversification of the activities by its actors as well as the enhancement of their management practices
