Résumé :
Inclusion of tangible user interfaces can facilitate learning through contextual experience, interaction with the provided information, and epistemic actions, resulting in effecting learning in design education. The goal of this study is to investigate how tangible user interface (TUI) affects design learning through the cognitive load. Extended reality-based TUI and traditional desktop-based GUI were utilized to deliver the same information to two groups of students. The NASA TLX tool was used to measure students' perceived cognitive load after receiving information through the two modalities. Contemporary design pedagogy, the potential use of XR, design cognition, today's design learners experience-oriented lifestyle were combined to provide a theoretical framework to understand how information delivery modalities affect design learning. The results reveal that the use of XR-based TUIs decreases cognitive load resulting in enhanced experience and effective learning in design studios.

AbstractIntuitive user interfaces have been of great concern for GUI developers. The current research, who deals with their designing, faces the term intuitive constantly. The main question is how can the Interface be intuitive? For the moment, the researchers try to provide a very intuitive generic user interface that can be used in a variety of applications. In this paper we provide a solution that can model any applied ontology into a honeycomb menu. The hexagonal shape of the honeycomb has attracted the attention of humans for centuries. As a relevant consequence, the final user can browse any knowledge base very easily with the aid of this interface. Another useful feature is that programmers can take full advantage of semantic web technologies which can tailor results based on any knowledge base that is feed as input, without any need for code change, thus leading towards a panacea system.

Résumé :
In the asphalt–aggregate system, the aggregate-bitumen interface cohesive and adhesive bond determine the mechanical properties of asphalt pavement. The presence of moisture leading to adhesive failure at the binder-aggregate interface and/or cohesive failure within the binder or binder-filler mastic is the main mechanisms of moisture damage in the spring-thaw season. In order to evaluate the effect of nano hydrophobic silane silica (NHSS) on aggregate-bitumen interface bond strength in the spring-thaw season, an aggregate-bitumen interface bond strength test was proposed to quantify the interface bond strength of base asphalt and NHSS modified asphalt. Then, the effect of temperature, freeze-thawing cycles and moisture on aggregate-bitumen interface shear strength of base asphalt and NHSS modified asphalt was also discussed. The results illustrated that the shear failure dominated the aggregate-bitumen interface bonding failure in the spring-thaw season, and temperature and moisture had a significant effect on interface shear strength of modified and unmodified asphalt. Moreover, the addition of NHSS could increase the aggregate-bitumen interface shear strength under any working conditions. Furthermore, the moisture damage model of aggregate-bitumen interface shear strength of base asphalt (BA) and NHSS modified asphalt was established based on a research method combining numerical calculations and laboratory tests.

Résumé :
Aim: This study aims to evaluate the microleakage between the gingival seat and base material and to assess the interface integrity between the base material and overlying composite in class II cavities restored using deep margin elevation. Materials and Methods: Thirty maxillary molars (n = 30) were taken, and class II cavities were prepared with a gingival seat extending below the cementoenamel junction. These teeth were divided into three groups for subgingival margin elevation using different materials: Group A (n = 10) – flowable composite, Group B (n = 10) – glass ionomer cement (GIC), and Group C (n = 10) – GIC with nanohydroxyapatite (GIC n-HAp). The remaining cavities were restored with bulk-fill composite. After undergoing 1000 thermocycling cycles, half of the samples were examined for microleakage using confocal laser microscopy, and the other half were assessed for interface integrity using scanning electron microscopy. Microleakage was statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and interface integrity was analyzed by Kruskal–Wallis tests. Results: The study found that GIC n-HAp exhibited significantly lower microleakage between the base material and gingival seat than flowable composite and GIC. However, regarding interface integrity between the base material and bulk-fill composite, flowable composite, and GIC outperformed GIC n-HAp. Conclusions: Incorporating n-HAp into GIC effectively reduced microleakage at the dentin-base material interface. However, the interface integrity between GIC n-HAp and the composite poses a challenge.

Résumé :
The discordance between expressions interpretable by a natural language interface (NLI) system and those answerable by a knowledge base is a critical problem in the field of NLIs. In order to solve this discordance problem, this paper proposes a method to translate natural language questions into formal queries that can be generated from a graph-based knowledge base. The proposed method considers a subgraph of a knowledge base as a formal query. Thus, all formal queries corresponding to a concept or a predicate in the knowledge base can be generated prior to query time and all possible natural language expressions corresponding to each formal query can also be collected in advance. A natural language expression has a one-to-one mapping with a formal query. Hence, a natural language question is translated into a formal query by matching the question with the most appropriate natural language expression. If the confidence of this matching is not sufficiently high the proposed method rejects the question and does not answer it. Multipredicate queries are processed by regarding them as a set of collected expressions. The experimental results show that the proposed method thoroughly handles answerable questions from the knowledge base and rejects unanswerable ones effectively.

Résumé :
Nominalizations can refer to events, instances of events or participants in an event. The particular reference is determined by the lexical semantics of the base and the suffix, and by the conceptual structure of the base. The comparison between deverbal and denominal nominalization in -ata in Italian reveals that the conceptual structure plays a crucial role in determining the reference of a nominalization. Italian nominalizations of -ata are productively derived from verbal and nominal bases. Derivations from verbal bases refer to a single event denoted by the base. Derivations from a nominal base N denote events or results corresponding to a limited number of pattems, such as a hit by N, a characteristic action of N, a period of N, a quantity that is contained in N, etc. The paper argues that the function of the suffix operates on the lexical meaning of the base, but the con~positiono f the lexical meaning of the base with the lexical meaning of the suffix is restricted by the conceptual properties of the base.

Résumé :
Tangible User Interface (TUI) represents a huge potential for Virtual Reality (VR) because tangibles can naturally provide rich haptic cues which are often missing in VR experiences that make use of standard controllers. We are particularly interested in implementing TUIs for smartphone-based VR, given the lower usage barrier and easy deployment. In order to keep the overall system simple and accessible, we have explored object detection through visual markers, using the smartphone’s camera. In order to help VR experience designers, in this work we present a design space for marker-based TUI for VR. We have mapped this design space by developing several marker-based tangible interaction prototypes and through a formative study with professionals with different backgrounds. We then instantiated the design space in a Tangible VR Book which we evaluate with remote user studies inspired by the vignette methodology.

Résumé :
Aluminum was composited with iron-base shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber. It is important to join between matrix metal and reinforced SMA fiber successfully. Matrix metal can obtain compressive residual stress caused by shape memory effect of SMA fiber without strong interface. In this study, aluminum matrix composite reinforced by iron-base SMA fiber was fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). At this method, sintering of hard-to-sinter materials (Al and Ti), junction of flame bonding materials is easy. The pure aluminum powder with iron-base SMA fiber was joined at 773K. As a result, intermetallic phase was formed at the interface between aluminum and iron-base SMA fiber and it was clarified that the interfacial strength depends on kind and thickness of intermetallic phase. This strong interface gives beneficial residual stress into aluminum from SMA fiber.

Résumé :
Dissimilar joints between 1050 Al alloy and Cu were prepared by ultrasonic spot welding technique to understand the joint characteristics. The joint strength was evaluated by tensile shear strength test. The joint strength increased with increasing joining energy and the joint produced with sufficiently high energy was fractured at the base metal region of Al alloy. The interface microstructure in Al alloy consists of severely deformed region due to ultrasonic vibration. In addition, the fine and equiaxed grains were observed near the joint interface in the specimens fractured at the base metal. These characteristics were significantly different from the microstructure in the bulk region of Al alloy. In contrast, the microstructure in Cu was hardly changed around the interface after ultrasonic welding. Additionally, thin intermetallic compound layer with the thickness of 40 nm was found to be formed at the joint interface in the specimens fractured at the base metal. Peak temperature during ultrasonic welding was found to be approximately 480 K at the interface, which was measured using embedded thermocouple.

Résumé :
While it is generally accepted that van der Waals (vdW) forces govern gecko adhesion, several studies indicate contributions from non-vdW forces and highlight the importance of understanding the adhesive contact interface. Previous work hypothesized that the surface of gecko setae is hydrophobic, with nonpolar lipid tails exposed on the surface. However, direct experimental evidence supporting this hypothesis and its implications on the adhesion mechanism is lacking. Here, we investigate the sapphire-setae contact interface using interface-sensitive spectroscopy and provide direct evidence of the involvement of acid-base interactions between polar lipid headgroups exposed on the setal surface and sapphire. During detachment, a layer of unbound lipids is left as a footprint due to cohesive failure within the lipid layer, which, in turn, reduces wear to setae during high stress sliding. The absence of this lipid layer enhances adhesion, despite a small setal-substrate contact area. Our results show that gecko adhesion is not exclusively a vdW-based, residue-free system.

Résumé :
This research explored the variation of bond-breaking effect with variety of bond-breaking layers installed between the concrete pavement surface slabs and the lean concrete (LCB) base, in order to offer parameters for structure analysis of pavements with bond-breaking layers and to optimize the selection of bond-breaking layers for the practical road engineering projects. This research tested the bonding stresses and the frictional forces at slab-base interface of pavements under different bond-breaking condition, as well as the anti-erosion performance of base course, via the anti-erosion tests in laboratory and the field tests for mechanical performance of slab-base interface treated with different bond-breaking layers in some highway projects of Hunan and Guangdong Provinces. Bond-breaking media applied in this research include the 3cm asphalt concrete (AC), 1cm emulsified asphalt slurry seal (EASS), geotextile and emulsion wax curing agent (EWCA). The findings from the field tests for bonding stress between slab-base layers indicated that EASS and EWCA did better than geotextile in reducing friction or bonding stress between slab-base layers. And the findings from the anti-erosion tests indicated that: under the same conditions, specimens covered with geotextile did far better than specimens brushed with asphalt on the surface in resisting erosion, and specimens covered with geotextile or brushed with asphalt did far better than no bond-breaking layer in resisting erosion. The mechanical performance of slab-base interface with different bond-breaking media derived from this research offers scientific reference to pavement design and construction control in the practical road engineering projects. Résumé :
The article discusses a method for creating automatically generated adaptive user interfaces of knowledge base editors based on an ontological approach. The main goal that guided the authors is to improve the quality and convenience of creating and editing knowledge bases, taking into account the specifics of the subject area, the characteristics of an expert user and other parameters. The description of the concept of a new approach to generating adaptive interfaces is given. Additionally, a detailed description of all ontologies, knowledge bases and models used in the specified approach to generating interfaces, as key elements of the proposed idea. The presented ontology of knowledge about interface design introduces new abstract elements that define interface tasks without explicitly defining their visual and functional representation, while each abstract element of this ontology has several representation options - adaptations of abstract elements. The ontology of graphical elements of the user interface defines a specific visual and functional representation of abstract elements in the form of ready-made reusable WIMP elements, such as lists, buttons, menus, etc. The presented knowledge base on interface design describes the rules for its formation depending on the structure of the domain ontology, user characteristics, and usability requirements. The presented interface model describes the structure of the generated adaptive interface in accordance with the user's individual preferences and other additional information. All the ontologies and knowledge bases described in the article are currently implemented on the IACPaaS platform.

Résumé :
Zn-Al filler metal wettability tests were performed. With the match of CsF-AlF3 flux, Zn-Al filler metal wettability is poor on pure copper surface. The Cu-Al-Zn intermetallic compound interface layer exits between Zn-Al filler metal and Cu base metal. When Al content is low in Zn-Al filler metal, the filler metal wettability is poor and the filler metal melting point is low. In the wettability test course, the time is long in which Cu base metal interacts with liquid Zn-Al filler metal. And the Cu-Al-Zn intermetallic compound interface layer grows thick between filler metal and base metal. With the increase of Al content in Zn-Al filler metal, the interaction strengthens between Zn-Al filler metal and Cu base metal. In the wettability test course, the time beocome short in which Cu base metal interacts with liquid Zn-Al filler metal. The Cu-Al-Zn intermetallic compound interface layer gets thin between filler metal and base metal. Meanwhile, Zn-Al filler metal wettability improves on pure copper surface. But the improvement is not remarkable. Its wettablility is still poor on pure copper surface.

Résumé :
In an increasingly complex competitive situation, firms look to outside technological resources to supplement and substitute for expensive in-house effort. The use by industry of national laboratories and universities (the ‘science base’) is usually seen in terms of the transfer of technology out of universities. In reality, what is increasingly happening is that the ideas and problems of industry are first transferred into the science base. This has implications for the control and direction of scientific research. The authors illustrate the implications of this current trend for the control and direction of scientific research by discussing the findings of a recent study. This compared industry and academic links in two industries in three countries: the flow measuring and electronic component industries in the UK, France and Belgium.

Résumé :
<p>The effect of complex formation of polyacids (polyacrylic (PAAc) and polymethacrylic (PMAAc)) with polyacrylamide (PAA) on their surface properties at solution/air interface has been studied by surface tension, electric conductivity and potentiometric measurements at 293±0.2 K. The relaxation time and surface activity of polycomplexes were calculated from kinetic data on the surface tension. It was found that during complex formation the relaxation time of a surface layer has a maximum and the surface activity of macromolecules is increased. Also the standard free energy of adsorption for PAA and polyacid-PAA polycomplexes were calculated. They are equal DadsG°293 = - 19.1±0.1 kJ/base-mol. for PAA, DadsG°293 = -21.2±0.1 kJ/basemol. for PMAAc-PAA polycomplex and DadsG°293 = -23.0±0.1 kJ/base-mol. for PAAc-PAA polycomplex (calculation per base-mole of PAA monomer link). It is shown that the surface activity and ability to decrease of the water surface tension is less for PMAAc-PAA than for PAAc-PAA. Such anomalous behaviour of PMAAc-PAA polycomplex probably is caused by an excessive strengthening of inner- and intermolecular hydrophobic interactions in macromolecules of PMAAc- PAA polycomplexes due to the presence of α-methyl groups in PMAAc macromolecules. Because of the rebuilding of macromolecule segments of complex by polarity at the interface is becoming a difficult one.</p>

Résumé :
Clad rebars of four different base materials (20MnSiV, 35# steel, 45# steel, and 55# steel) were successfully produced by a vacuum hot rolling process. A metallographic optical microscope (OM), electron backscatter diffractometer (EBSD), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and salt spray corrosion chamber were used to investigate the clad contour, properties, and composite interface microstructure of all four rebars. The results demonstrated that the thickness of the clad layer in the 20MnSiV/316L rebar had a more uniform distribution than those in the 35#/316L rebar, 45#/316L rebar, and 55#/316L rebar because 20MnSiV was more similar to 316L stainless steel in terms of deformation tendency. As the carbon content in the base layer increased, the amount of chromium-rich carbides increased noticeably. These large amounts led to a deficiency of chromium in the rebar composite interface and reduced corrosion resistance. Furthermore, bonding performance tests revealed that the bonding strength of the rebar composite interface not only depended on the amount of chromium-rich carbides, but also on the grain size of the composite interface. The larger the grain size of the composite interface, the lower the bonding strength was.

Résumé :
The free fall of a liquid mass through vertical tubes with a weakly increasing cross-section induces an acceleration of the upper liquid interface larger than gravity. The phenomenon is well described by a one-dimensional inviscid model. The super acceleration of the upper interface comes from the additional positive pressure gradient caused by the expanding geometry, which adds to the gravity body force. A perturbative expansion of this base solution further accounts for the interface shape and stability. In particular, the positive pressure gradient at the interface makes it unstable, forming a concentrated ‘nipple’ on top of the essentially flat base solution. We discuss the possible connexion of these findings with the problem of wave breaking in free surface flows.

Résumé :
Nickel(Ni)/aluminium(Al) hybrid foams are Al base foams coated with Ni by electrodeposition. Hybrid foams offer an enhanced energy absorption capacity. To ensure a good adhering Ni coating, necessary for a shear resistant interface, the influence of a chemical pre-treatment of the base foam was investigated by a combination of an interface morphology analysis by focused ion beam (FIB) tomography and in situ mechanical testing. The critical energy for interfacial decohesion from these microbending fracture tests in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) were contrasted to and the results validated by depth-resolved measurements of the evolving stresses in the Ni coating during three-point bending tests at the energy-dispersive diffraction (EDDI) beamline at the synchrotron BESSY II. Such a multi-method assessment of the interface decohesion resistance with respect to the interface morphology provides a reliable investigation strategy for further improvement of the interface morphology.

Résumé :
Laser impact welding (LIW) is a novel welding technique which uses laser induced shock waves to obtain the solid-state and metallurgical bonding between flyer and base plates, and can be applied in welding of dissimilar metal plates in micron level. In this paper, experimental study is conducted with titanium as the flyer plate and aluminum as the base plate under different laser energies and laser spot diameters. Besides, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welding joints are also investigated. The wavy interface is observed by metallographic investigation which is similar to explosive welding and electromagnetic pulse welding. Moreover, the micro-hardness taken from the interface region shows an obvious improvement compared with the base metal. It is also found that laser shock welding results in fine grained structure of titanium on the weld interface. In conclusion, laser shock welding can not only improve the material microstructure of weld interface, but also avoid the heat affected zone and formation of intermetallic phase during dissimilar metal welding. Therefore, it is a promising welding technology in the field of MEMS.

Résumé :
The main results of a numerical investigation into the effects of interface condition on the critical response and predicted performance of flexible pavements with granular bases are presented. In addition, the influence of using linear elastic and non-linear elastic models for granular base characterization, on the design life of typical road structures with granular bases under various combinations of layer interface conditions is examined. Repeated load triaxial tests are carried out and non-linear regression analyses on tests results are performed to determine the constitutive model parameters. The Asphalt Institute distress models for fatigue cracking and rutting using both linear and non-linear analyses are utilized to estimate the pavement design life. It is shown, among others, that interface condition affects significantly the critical response of pavement structures and hence their predicted performance. Furthermore, the results indicate that the use of linear assumption to characterize granular base and sub-base behaviour, grossly over-estimates the design life of pavement structures. This effect strongly depends on interface conditions used between the pavements layers.

Résumé :
Cold metal transfer process is applied to join titanium and Q235 steel with copper filler metal. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis, micro-hardness tests, and tensile strength test were performed to investigate the joining mechanism and strength of joints. The results show that the stacking order of two base metals affected the joining modes and strength. For top Q235 steel to bottom Ti-TA2 lapped joint, there was no distinct interface reaction layer between the steel base metal and the weld metal; dispersed TiFe2 intermetalics (IMCs) IMCs between the steel base metal and the Ti base metal greatly improved the strength of joint; the tensile force of the joint could reach up to 93% that of steel-steel joint using the same welding parameters. Additionally, the joints were fractured in dimple mode at the steel base metal. For top Ti-TA2 to bottom Q235 steel lapped joint, the increasing volume fraction of Ti-Cu IMCs at the Ti-Cu weld metal interface contributed to the strength of joint degradation. The joints under tensile loading are initiated at the Ti-Cu weld metal interface between the weld metal and Ti base metal, then propagated to weld metal, finally fractured with brittle mode.
