Résumé :
By developing the biographical genre though a “translocal micro-history” approach, the research aims to study the figure of Eric J. Hobsbawm focusing on his elective affinity with Italy. It examines the ways in which the encounter of the English historian with this country took place and was renewed from the fifties until the new Millennium. First, it analyzes the relationships networks which Hobsbawm created in Italy or with Italians worldwide; secondly, it considers the results that these interactions provoked at the level of scientific production and political reflection, trying to capture at the same time the transformations that his political identity underwent in contact with the Italian Communist Party. Moreover it try to explore the features that his reputation reached in Italy, discussing the influences his production exerted on Italian historiographical context and on Italian public opinion.

Marsilli-Vargas, Xochitl. Genres of Listening. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478023159.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In Genres of Listening Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas explores a unique culture of listening and communicating in Buenos Aires. She traces how psychoanalytic listening circulates beyond the clinical setting to become a central element of social interaction and cultural production in the city that has the highest number of practicing psychologists and psychoanalysts in the world. Marsilli-Vargas develops the concept of genres of listening to demonstrate that hearers listen differently, depending on where, how, and to whom they are listening. In particular, she focuses on psychoanalytic listening as a specific genre. Porteños (citizens of Buenos Aires) have developed a “psychoanalytic ear” that emerges during conversational encounters in everyday interactions in which participants offer different interpretations of the hidden meaning the words carry. Marsilli-Vargas does not analyze these interpretations as impositions or interruptions but as productive exchanges. By outlining how psychoanalytic listening operates as a genre, Marsilli-Vargas opens up ways to imagine other modes of listening and forms of social interaction.

Edwards, Catharine. Conversing with the Absent, Corresponding with the Dead. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804208.003.0014.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The chapter focuses on the genre’s potential, widely recognized by ancient practitioners and theorists alike, to cultivate friendship among individuals who for one reason or other are prevented from interacting face to face. Edwards shows how Seneca co-opts this particular aspect of the genre’s ideology, not least to further his educational programme and his self-conscious aspiration to a broad and enduring readership. Specifically, she argues that Seneca posits important parallels between the relationship amongst absent friends on the one hand and the relationship of philosophically minded students to earlier thinkers and practitioners of philosophy on the other, as both invite (indeed require) dialogic interactions mediated by writing and reading. This conversation with the dead in turn anticipates the mode of interaction between Seneca and future generations (including contemporary audiences).

Everett, Samuel Sami, et Rebekah Vince, dir. Jewish-Muslim Interactions. Liverpool University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781789621334.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
By exploring dynamic Jewish–Muslim interactions across North Africa and France through performance culture in the 20th and 21st centuries, this book offers an alternative chronology and lens to a growing trend in media and scholarship that views these interactions primarily through conflict. The book interrogates interaction that crosses the genres of theatre, music, film, art, and stand-up, emphasising creative influence and artistic cooperation between performers from the Maghrib, with a focus on Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and diaspora communities, notably in France. The plays, songs, films, images, and comedy sketches analysed are multilingual, mixing not only with the former colonial language French, but also the rich diversity of indigenous Amazigh and Arabic languages. The first section examines accents, affiliations, and exchange, with an emphasis on aesthetics, familiarity, changing social roles, and cultural entrepreneurship. The second section shifts to consider departure and lingering presence through spectres and taboos, in its exploration of absence, influence, and elision. The volume concludes with an autobiographical afterword, which reflects on memories and legacies of Jewish–Muslim interactions across the Mediterranean.

Résumé :
This chapter proposes a new approach for addressing the question of genre, setting aside the long-reigning realist, taxonomic understanding in biblical scholarship. To understand the complex process through which they develop, this chapter builds on recent insights from the study of intertextuality, networks, emergence, and conceptual blending. It then re-envisions them as constellations in three-dimensional space, which gain their significance from the cultural perspectives from which they are viewed. As readers view texts from different perspectives, they notice different similarities between them that have a particular cultural resonance. Any given text may contribute to multiple genres, and only through recognizing those multiple genres, viewing the text’s interactions with others from multiple perspectives, is its full meaning, its true location in the vast textual network, evident. This also addresses several tensions at the heart of genre theory.

Résumé :
The study of literature and medicine in the Romantic period is an established and expanding field. However, scholars have tended to focus on a few canonical writers and a small number of texts, thereby obscuring the age’s huge diversity of medical writing. This chapter takes a wider view, presenting five case studies of medically trained or medically connected writers who demonstrate the broad intersection between medical and literary culture: John Aikin, Benjamin Rush, Joanna Baillie (sister of the physician Matthew Baillie), Erasmus Darwin, and John Keats. The chapter uses these case studies to show what is distinctive or innovative about interactions between literature and medicine in the period. The case studies also represent different genres of medical literature, or different genres that became in some sense medicalized: biography, autobiography, drama, didactic poetry, and epic. Each case study includes some consideration of the reception history of the genre in question.

Résumé :
The collective work included articles covering a wide range of issues, but united by one problem: the study of cultural transfer in the works of art in the countries of the East and West, where the East means a region that includes the countries of Africa, the Middle East, Far East and Southeast Asia, and The whole of Europe is included in the West, including Russia. Such a wide geographical scope is determined by the desire to study the mutual influences and ideological image of the phenomena of European, Russian and Oriental literature and cultures; the authors of the articles examine the transformation of the ideological and aesthetic views of European writers in the course of their perception by Eastern writers; analyze the mechanism of adaptation of the phenomena of foreign cultures by Europeans. It is important to study the mechanism for changing the Eurocentric view of the world, the dynamics of the literary process, the definition of the place and role of European literature in the complex process of interaction between the traditional and innovative views of progressive writers who were at the source of the contemporary literature of Eastern countries, including the African continent. The authors of the articles of collective work set as their task the study of the degree of mutual penetration of traditional views and literary and aesthetic concepts of European writers, which gave rise to new literary genres both in the East, and in Russia and Europe. Another task is to understand the internal mechanisms that led to the new status of the eastern region in the global space, the understanding of processes in public and literary thought in these countries and the mutual influence of European and non-European literatures and cultures.

Résumé :
This chapter identifies the passionate lament as one of the characteristic speech genres of tragedy. It suggests that Shakespeare’s exploratory engagement with the rhetoric of grief is as important as his interest in the soliloquy, the speech genre more usually cast as the typifying linguistic innovation of his tragedies. Five aspects of this rhetoric of grief are addressed in turn by means of examples drawn from Titus Andronicus, Richard III, Hamlet, and the Quarto Lear: that is, (1) the lament as grandiloquent set speech developing conventions from Seneca and Elizabethan dramatic tradition, (2) as occasion for copious variation and oratorical persuasion developing the educational capital of grammar-school rhetorical training, (3) as dialogic interaction exploring a potentially transformative pragmatics of pity or sympathetic identification, (4) as imitated passion of classical predecessors creating effects of individuated subjectivity, and (5) as transaction with the theatre audience.

Knight, Alison. The Dark Bible. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192896322.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract The Dark Bible explores early modern England’s interactions with difficult aspects of the Bible. For the early modern reader, although the Bible was understood to be perfect, sufficient, and transcendent (indeed, the Protestant Reformation required it), it was not always experienced as such. While traditional interpretive precepts, such as the claim that all dark passages could be read in the light of clear ones, were frequently recited by early modern commentators, their actual encounters with the darkness of the Bible suggest that writers, commentators, and translators were often deeply uncomfortable with the disjunction between how (as they thought) the Bible should be, and how it was. The Dark Bible investigates writers’ and translators’ attempts to explain, accommodate, circumvent, and repair problematic texts across a range of genres and contexts. In doing so, it charts English use of biblical scholarship in vernacular culture and investigates how vernacular writing in various genres could give voice to questioning and confused biblical interactions. This book demonstrates that early modern writers and critics engaged extensively with the Bible’s difficulties, attempting to work around and rectify problematic texts, and otherwise reconcile the darkness of the Bible with theories of the Bible’s perfection and clarity.

Résumé :
Shakespearean tragedies have played an important part in modern and contemporary East Asian engagements with Western cultures. Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Singaporean translations, rewritings, films, and theatre productions have three important shared characteristics, namely hybridization of genres, intra-regional and trans-historical allusions, and spirituality. These adaptations tend to present the plays in hybrid performative genres, sometimes turning tragedy into comedy or parody. These adaptations are also informed by intra-regional borrowing and allusions that matter to each separate cultural location and to East Asia as a whole. They tend to interpret Shakespearean tragedies through issues of spirituality and through the artists’ personal, rather than national, identities, giving primacy to personal life stories and to the interaction with the audience, rather than attempting ‘authentic’ representations either of Shakespearean tragedy or indeed of ‘Asia’.

Fay, Jacqueline. Materializing Englishness in Early Medieval Texts. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198757573.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The goal of this book is to restore to the story of Englishness the lively material interactions between words, bodies, plants, stones, metals, and soil, among other things, that would have characterized it for the early medieval English themselves. In particular, each chapter aims to demonstrate how a productive collapse, or fusion, between place and history happens not only in the intellectual realm, in ideas, but is also a material concern, becoming enfleshed in encounters between early medieval bodies and a host of material entities. Through readings of texts in a wide variety of genres including hagiography, heroic poetry, medical and historical works, the book argues that Englishness during this period is an embodied identity emergent at the frontier of material and textual interactions that serve productively to occlude history, religion, and geography. The early medieval English body thus results from the rich encounter between the lived environment—climate, soil, landscape features, plants—and the textual-discursive realm that both determines what that environment means and is also itself determined by the material constraints of everyday life.
