Résumé :
With the extensive application and continuous growth of big data, new challenges are imposed into network design. Without enough consideration of big data in traditional design, bottleneck problems will occur frequently in such IT infrastructure. SDN (Software Defined Network) is one of the solutions to conquer such problems. However, most current SDN applications are limited to pure SDN structure or internal data centers. Differently, we focus on the traffic transmission between data centers in this paper. We construct the WAN links between data centers through VPN based on SDN architecture and traditional network. Both theoretical analysis and experiment results show that SDN had advantage over traditional network. Our work also suggested SDN architecture and traditional network could coexist in the real condition.

In inter-datacenter elastic optical networks, multi-controller deployment is adopted to improve the stability and scalability of the control plane. As the network scale increases, the traditional multi-controller deployment scheme ignores the dynamic characteristics of traffic, resulting in unbalanced load among multiple controllers. In response to this problem, the existing switch migration mechanism is proposed to achieve balanced distribution of control loads. However, most of the existing research work does not consider the additional cost of switch migration, and the load balancing performance of the controller is not significantly improved after switch migration. In this paper, we propose a cost-aware switch migration (CASM) strategy for controller load balancing. The proposed CASM strategy first measures the controller load through multiple performance indicators that affect the controller load, and then judges whether the controller is overloaded or underloaded based on the controller’s response time to the request message, thereby improving the load balancing performance of the controller. Additionally, when selecting the switch to be migrated, the CASM selects the optimal switch for migration based on minimizing the migration cost, thereby reducing the cost of switch migration. The performance evaluation shows that CASM significantly improves load balancing performance of controllers and reduces the migration cost compared to existing solutions.

The PrEstoCloud project aims to enable on-demand resource scaling of Big Data applications to the cloud. In this context, we have to deal with the huge amount of data processed and more, in particular, its transportation between one cloud and another. The scope of this thesis is to develop a network-level architecture that could easily deal with Big Data application challenges and could be integrated into the PrEstoCloud consortium staying transparent to the application level. However, the connection between multiple cloud providers in this context presents a series of challenges: the architecture should adapt to the variable number of clouds to connect, it have to bypass the limitations of the cloud infrastructure and most importantly, it must have a general design able to work in every cloud provider. In this report, we present a general VPN-based Inter-Cloud architecture able to work in every kind of environment. We implemented a prototype with IPSec and OpenVPN, connecting the i3s laboratory with Amazon AWS and Azure, we evaluate our architecture and the used tools in two ways: (i) we test the stability over time of the architecture via latency tests; (ii) we perform non-intrusive Pathload tests in the Amazon, showing the usability of the available bandwidth estimator in the cloud, the AWS network characteristics discovered through the tests and a final comparison of the VPN tools overhead.

Software-Defined-Network (SDN) is emerging as a solid opportunity for the Network Service Providers (NSP) to reduce costs while at the same time providing better and/or new services. The possibility to flexibly manage and configure highly-available and scalable network services through data model abstractions and easy-to-consume APIs is attractive and the adoption of such technologies is gaining momentum. At the same time, NSPs are planning to innovate their infrastructures through a process of network softwarisation and programmability. The SDN paradigm aims at improving the design, configuration, maintenance and service provisioning agility of the network through a centralised software control. This can be easily achievable in local area networks, typical of data-centers, where the benefits of having programmable access to the entire network is not restricted by latency between the network devices and the SDN controller which is reasonably located in the same LAN of the data path nodes. In Wide Area Networks (WAN), instead, a centralised control plane limits the speed of responsiveness in reaction to time-constrained network events due to unavoidable latencies caused by physical distances. Moreover, an end-to-end control shall involve the participation of multiple, domain-specific, controllers: access devices, data-center fabrics and backbone networks have very different characteristics and their control-plane could hardly coexist in a single centralised entity, unless of very complex solutions which inevitably lead to software bugs, inconsistent states and performance issues. In recent years, the idea to exploit SDN for WAN infrastructures to connect multiple sites together has spread in both the scientific community and the industry. The former has produced interesting results in terms of framework proposals, complexity and performance analysis for network resource allocation schemes and open-source proof of concept prototypes targeting SDN architectures spanning multiple technological and administrative domains. On the other hand, much of the work still remains confined to the academy mainly because based on pure Openflow prototype implementation, networks emulated on a single general-purpose machine or on simulations proving algorithms effectiveness. The industry has made SDN a reality via closed-source systems, running on single administrative domain networks with little if no diversification of access and backbone devices. In this dissertation we present our contributions to the design and the implementation of SDN architectures for the control plane of WAN infrastructures. In particular, we studied and prototyped two SDN platforms to build a programmable, intent-based, control-plane suitable for the today highly distributed cloud infrastructures. Our main contributions are: (i) an holistic and architectural description of a distributed SDN control-plane for end-end QoS provisioning; we compare the legacy IntServ RSVP protocol with a novel approach for prioritising application-sensitive flows via centralised vantage points. It is based on a peer-to-peer architecture and could so be suitable for the inter-authoritative domains scenario. (ii) An open-source platform based on a two-layer hierarchy of network controllers designed to provision end-to-end connectivity in real networks composed by heterogeneous devices and links within a single authoritative domain. This platform has been integrated in CORD, an open-source project whose goal is to bring data-center economics and cloud agility to the NSP central office infrastructures, combining NFV (Network Function Virtualization), SDN and the elasticity of commodity clouds. Our platform enables the provisioning of connectivity services between multiple CORD sites, up to the customer premises. Thus our system and software contributions in SDN has been combined with a NFV infrastructure for network service automation and orchestration.

To meet the required future challenge of providing enough bandwidth to achieve high data traffic rates in datacenter links, four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals transmission in short-haul intensity modulation-direct detection datacenters connections supported by homogeneous weakly-coupled multicore fibers has been proposed. However, in such fibers, a physical effect known as inter-core crosstalk (ICXT) limits significantly the performance of short-reach connections by causing large bit error rate (BER) fluctuations that can lead undesirable system outages. In this work, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for eye-pattern analysis and BER prediction in PAM4 inter-datacenter optical connections impaired by ICXT, with the aim of optical performance monitoring. The performance of the CNN is assessed using the root mean square error (RMSE). Considering PAM4 interdatacenter links with one interfering core and for different skew-symbol rate products, extinction ratios and crosstalk levels, the results show that the implemented CNN is able to predict the BER without surpassing the RMSE limit. The CNNs trained with different optical parameters obtained the best performance in terms of generalization comparing to CNNs trained with specific optical parameters. These results confirm that the CNN-based models can be able to extract features from received eye patterns to predict the BER without prior knowledge of the transmitted signals.
De modo a colmatar a necessidade de fornecer largura de banda suficiente para atingir altas taxas de tráfego de dados em ligações entre centros de dados, foi proposta a transmissão de sinais com modulação de impulsos em amplitude com 4 níveis (PAM4) em ligações de curto alcance entre centro de dados com modulação de intensidade e deteção direta suportadas por fibras homogéneas multinúcleo fracamente acopladas. No entanto, neste tipo de fibras, a diafonia entre núcleos (ICXT) limita significativamente o desempenho das ligações, causando grandes flutuações da taxa de erros binários (BER), o que pode conduzir à indisponibilidade da ligação. Neste trabalho, através da análise de diagramas de olho usando uma rede neuronal convolucional (CNN) é estimada a BER em ligações ópticas entre centros de dados PAM4 degradadas por ICXT com o objetivo de monitorização do desempenho. Para avaliar o desempenho da CNN é usada como métrica a raiz do erro quadrático médio (RMSE). Para diferentes atrasos de propagação entre núcleos, razões de extinção e níveis de diafonia, a CNN é capaz de prever BERs sem ultrapassar o limite estabelecido para o RMSE. As CNNs treinadas com diferentes parâmetros ópticos obtiveram o melhor desempenho em termos de generalização em comparação com CNNs treinadas com parâmetros ópticos específicos. Estes resultados confirmam que os modelos baseados em CNN são capazes de extrair informação a partir de imagens de diagramas de olhos, prevendo a BER sem conhecimento prévio dos sinais transmitidos.
