Résumé :
Computer Software Intensive systems have become ingrained in our daily life. Apart from obvious scientific and business applications, various embedded devices are empowered with computer software. Such a diverse application of Computer Software has led to inherent complexity in building such systems. As civilizations moved forward, the concept of architectural thinking and practice was introduced to grapple with the complexity and other challenges of creating buildings, skyscrapers, townships, and cities. The Practice of Software Architecture is an attempt to understand and handle similar challenges in Software Intensive Systems. This paper introduces software architecture and the underlying philosophy thereof. This paper provokes a discussion around the present and future of Software Architecture. The authors discuss skills and roles of Software Architect.

Résumé :
Deleuze's use of thermodynamics in the fifth chapter of his masterwork Difference and Repetition ushers in perhaps the most crucial notion for understanding this work: intensity. Given that the process of actualisation relies on the intensive necessarily means that any discussion of the relationship between the virtual and the actual must include a thorough explanation of the role of intensity, and where exactly this notion sits within the virtual–actual doublet. As such, we must return to the fifth chapter of Difference and Repetition in order to assess the way in which Deleuze conceives of this complex and indispensable cog in his ontological and metaphysical philosophy. In this paper we turn, then, to Deleuze's engagement with the theories of the intensive as found in classical thermodynamic theory. Quite simply, Deleuze will highlight the way in which the productive force of differences in intensity remains under-appreciated in contrast to the extensive states they create in this classical framework. We can understand this engagement, then, as an example of the way in which the extensive is continually privileged over the intensive. In this paper we will outline the details of the engagement between Deleuze and thermodynamics, as this paves the way for his own philosophy of intensity. Furthermore, we will provide a theory of the relationship between intensity, the virtual and the actual as these notions appear in Difference and Repetition.

Résumé :
Deleuze's interpretation of Spinozan philosophy is intrinsically related to the concept of intensity. Attributes are defined as intensive qualities, modal essences as intensive quantities or degrees of power; the life of affects corresponds to continuous variations in intensity. This essay will show why Deleuze needs the concept of intensity for his reading of Spinozan philosophy as a philosophy of expressive immanence. It will also discuss the problems that spring from this reading: in what way, if any, are modal essences modified by the intensive variations of affects? How can the Spinozan conception of eternal modal essences be reconciled with the idea of affections of essence? What is the ethical import of the life of existing modes, when modal essences are considered as eternal? While these questions, in particular the last two, confront each commentator on Spinoza and demand a solution in one way or another, the essay will conclude with a question which is posed from an exclusively Deleuzian perspective: why is the concept of the virtual, which takes centre stage in Deleuze's own philosophy of immanence, missing in his account of Spinoza?

The artistic phenomenon should be , first of all defined by the description of forces . In the forms , colors , sounds , materials , and in the special case of cinema mode these forces as part of automation mechanism images . In this sense Deleuze gives to the arts by assigning the role to detect the signs , capture them and make them sensitive . Such that we can no longer say about art as a place of production of meanings , but the trial of strength. It is, this field of think of art as material composition forces . Art does not reproduce forms imaginary , but captures materials , concrete strength. The potency of the art resides therefore in different assemblages with the materials that compose . Only then can understand why , in Deleuzian perspective, the film should be seen by the internal relationship images, the way they articulate their threads - plans , movements camera, the relationship between movement and time, etc. , and not by the relationship they establish with real or believable to the production of images. Not indices of realism or rapprochement between the visible world and the ways that we take the film , but at he is able to capture and compose sensitive world.

Children listening to music, considered as an aesthetic experience, has been the subject of little research work. We hypothesize that examining aesthetic experience through the lens of the process of the encounter enables one to rightly consider the specificities of childrens musical listening experiences characterized by the movement of the sound flow. Simondian concepts of transduction and disparation, Deuleuze & Guattari concepts of disjunctive synthesis, hecceity and refrain create an intense philosophical space that enable us to approach the phenomenon that we are investigating. From traces that appear in different forms, we produce here a set of event examples that refuses the ways of a typology that seems incompatible with the phenomenon of the “Encounter”. This set of examples presents events from which we pick affect valencies. We postulate that they are affirmative of an encounter with a musical artwork. Those examples have hypothetic value, and can be seen as possible encouters with music

Résumé :
This thesis comprises an empirical case study of scientific data production in oceanography and a philosophical analysis of the relations between newly created scientific data and the natural world. Based on qualitative interviews with researchers, I reconstruct research practices that lead to the ongoing production of digital data related to long-term developments of plankton biodiversity in the oceans. My analysis is centred on four themes: materiality, scientific representing with data, methodological continuity, and the contribution of non-scientists to epistemic processes. These are critically assessed against the background of today’s data-intensive sciences and increased automation and remoteness in oceanographic practices. Sciences of the world’s oceans have by and large been disregarded in philosophical scholarship thus far. My thesis opens this field for philosophical analysis and reveals various conditions and constraints of data practices that are largely uncontrollable by ocean scientists. I argue that the creation of useful scientific data depends on the implementation and preservation of material, methodological, and social continuities. These allow scientists to repeatedly transform visually perceived characteristics of research samples into meaningful scientific data stored in a digital database. In my case study, data are not collected but result from active intervention and subsequent manipulation and processing of newly created material objects. My discussion of scientific representing with data suggests that scientists do not extract or read any intrinsic representational relation between data and a target, but make data gradually more computable and compatible with already existing representations of natural systems. My arguments shed light on the epistemological significance of materiality, on limiting factors of scientific agency, and on an inevitable balance between changing conditions of concrete research settings and long-term consistency of data practices.

Stayt, Louise C. « 'I've never been surrounded by so many people and felt so alone' : a Heideggerian phenomenological study investigating patients' experiences of technology in adult intensive care ». Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/53594/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Research Question: What are patients’ experiences of technology in adult intensive care? Research Objectives: -To explore patients’ perceptions of receiving care in a technological environment -To explore patients’ perceptions of how technology has influenced their experience of care Background: Technology is fundamental to the physical recovery of critically ill patients in intensive care (ICU), however, there is a suggestion in the literature that its presence may dehumanise patient care and distract the nurse from attending to patients’ psychosocial needs. Little attention has been paid to patients’ perceptions of receiving care in a technological environment. The purpose of this research, therefore, was to explore patients’ experiences of technology and care within ICU. Methods: This study was informed by Heideggerian phenomenology. The research took place in a university hospital in England. Nineteen participants who had been a patient in ICU were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed utilising Van Manen’s framework. Findings: Resulting themes were ‘My Useless Body’ which describes how participants experienced their body as dysfunctional, disconnected and invaded by technology, ‘Making Sense of It’, which describes how participants rationalised their experiences by constructing a story, and ‘Technology and Care’, which describes how and why participants endured technologies in ICU. Conclusions: The disintegrated body is central to the critically ill’s experiences in ICU. Families play an important role in helping patients make sense of their experiences by filling in gaps in memory and helping them to sort the real from unreal memories. Families therefore require support and information resources in fulfilling this role. Patients experience technology and care as a series of paradoxical relationships: alienating yet reassuring, uncomfortable yet comforting, impersonal yet personal. Nurses maintaining a close and supportive presence and providing personal comfort and care may minimise the invasive and isolating potential of technology

Résumé :
Family Meetings occur frequently in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) yet little data existed to guide clinicians in the conduct of these meetings. The medical team is required to deliver complex medical information and navigate complex decision-making with a traumatised family during a meeting. The objectives of this study were to describe the content and process of 15 whanau/family meetings in the PICU, identify family meeting characteristics and patient and family attributes that influence family satisfaction and recommend guidelines for health professionals working in the PICU. The study was conducted in a PICU in a university-affiliated children’s hospital in New Zealand (NZ). The process and content of 15 family meetings were analysed using a coding framework previously developed through a qualitative study of family meetings in the adult intensive care unit (Curtis, 2002a). A questionnaire providing a quantitative assessment of family satisfaction drawn from the same study was administered to 30 family members. Demographic data for the study were collected from the patient’s hospital record and these were combined with data relating to the meeting recording and transcript to identify family meeting characteristics and attributes that might influence family satisfaction. The content and process of family meetings in the PICU were described using a framework detailing 28 codes from the six domains: introductions, informational exchange, discussions of the future, decisions, discussions about death and dying, and closings. A comparison of family meeting characteristics and patient and family attributes revealed that longer meetings (40 minutes plus) were associated with lower family satisfaction and should therefore prompt clinicians to consider whether there are unresolved conflicts, difficulties or misunderstandings between the medical team and the family. Recommendations are proposed to guide health professionals in family meetings in the PICU. This is the first study to record and code the content of family meetings in the PICU. The findings from this study will assist clinicians in their meetings with families. The description of the family meeting content will also provide a foundation for future communication training and research in the health environment.

Résumé :
Ovariohysterectomy and castration are common surgical procedures in small animal practice that can result in clinically significant postoperative pain. One way of controlling postoperative pain is administration of a single analgesic or a combination of different classes of analgesics prior to the onset of noxious stimuli. A constraint to the perioperative use of traditional opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is their undesirable side effects. In this series of experiments, the preventive (pre-emptive) analgesic efficacy of two popular human analgesics, tramadol (an ?atypical? opioid) and parecoxib (a NSAID with selective COX-2 inhibition) was evaluated in dogs. Initially, the efficacy and renal safety of parecoxib, tramadol and a combination of parecoxib, tramadol and pindolol (a -adrenoceptor blocker and 5-HT1A/1B antagonist) were screened in anaesthetised healthy dogs. These analgesics increased the dogs? nociceptive threshold to mechanical stimuli, without causing significant alterations in the dogs? glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimated by plasma iohexol clearance. Subsequently, the efficacy of tramadol was compared with morphine, in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy or castration. The Glasgow composite measure pain scale-short form score (CMPS-SF) and changes in intraoperative electroencephalogram (EEG) responses were used to assess the efficacy of analgesics. Of the three treatment groups (preoperative morphine, 0.5 mg kg-1; preoperative tramadol, 3 mg kg-1; a ?combination? of preoperative low-dose morphine, 0.1 mg kg-1, and postoperative tramadol 3 mg kg-1), dogs given the ?combination? had significantly lower pain scores after ovariohysterectomy. In castrated dogs, preoperative tramadol (3 mg kg-1) and morphine (0.5 mg kg-1) were tested and no significant difference in the CMPS-SF score were observed between them. Changes in EEG variables were not specific between the treatment groups in ovariohysterectomised dogs. Finally, the efficacy of test drugs was evaluated against acute noxious electrical stimulation in anaesthetised dogs, using EEG. Median frequency of the EEG, a reliable indicator of nociception, increased significantly in tramadol and parecoxib groups, compared to morphine, after electrical stimulation. These studies demonstrated that tramadol and parecoxib can produce analgesia in dogs with insignificant side effects. The efficacy of tramadol appears to vary with the type of noxious stimulus. A complete prevention of noxious input by administration of analgesics pre- and post-operatively could have important clinical applications.

Our research is based on the discernible qualities of the constructions we perceive, but these qualities cannot be attributed to concepts or factual causes. Words, and the whole signifying process, cannot frame the sensorial tangibleness; and the concepts are way too vast to determine the unicity of a building or of its statement. Using a musical metaphor, we say that in a major mode of mental representation we perceive already-formed objects and subjects from which sensorial attributes gain meaning. But this major mode cannot seize how and why a building or its own statement are unique. This unicity of the Perceived is birthed in a genetic occurrence, as sensible and semiotical dynamics progressively determine qualities and statements. The aim of this research is to build a theory of these individuation dynamics. When a building is being “individualized”, it is through the variations of sensible and semiotical powers that progressively arrange the object and the statements. This process demands that we use another way of thinking, that we call the minor mode of affects. This mode has a mental operator - the Intensity - that allows the perception of how sensible and semiotical powers vary - which is the Destiny. We cannot theorize affects without being aware of how material objects are inter-affected, how powerful they are, and how they make us redistribute our thoughts and their relationships to those passions and emotions that rationality will never halt. Affect, as the adequate idea of what will be Destiny, allows the sense of singularities and of how they put rhythm in the process of an oeuvre, whether it is sensible or theoretical

Résumé :
AbstractMost technologies are knowledge-intensive, and contemporary knowledge production is often technology-intensive. Hence, knowledge practices are a central theme for a handbook for the anthropology of technology. Knowledge about knowing has mostly been considered a branch of philosophy or alternatively of theology. In this section we argue that the study of knowledge practices is part of both the foundation of the anthropological discipline and its future as we attend to technology-mediated forms of knowing, unknowing, and re-knowing. The section highlights the variations and multiplicities of knowing. It shows that studying knowledge and forms of knowing implies exploring forms of unknowing and ignorance. The seven contributions to this section present research on processes through which knowledge is made, what becomes silenced in the process, and how anthropology often holds a special role in bringing such lost insights or alternative forms of knowing back into the light. Each of the chapters presents a unique take on human engagement with knowledge and technologies of knowing, thereby continuing a long tradition of studying the production of knowledge as socially embedded and materially ingrained.

Résumé :
Abstract We imagine a future in which geographically distributed engineers collaboratively develop, build, and test solutions to design-manufacture problems encountered in the product realization process. In this context, we want to provide a foundation to support the realization of industrial products for a global marketplace through distributed design and manufacture. Specifically, we want to provide a platform-independent framework to integrate distributed and heterogeneous software resources to support the computationally intensive activities in the product realization process, anchored in the philosophy of decision-based design. In this paper, we present a prototype platform-independent framework based on an experimental version, called P2, of the Sandia Product Realization Environment (PRE). We describe the implementation of this framework to design and prototype gear transmissions using commonly available software assets.

Résumé :
«Aggression» – absorbing all the most destructive things in human activity – is the most important problem of the philosophy and theory of technogenic civilization generated by intensive scientific and technological development. The perspective of the theory of technogenic civilization requires the broadest definition of «aggression». There are three areas of technogenic actualization of the problems of aggression: universal, social, individual. In social terms, special attention is drawn to the transition from a unipolar to a multipolar world, which increases the risks of various disasters and reduces the chances of democracy. On an individual plan, the problems of virtual aggression are becoming more acute and the position of eugenics is becoming stronger. The actualization of the topic of aggression in the theory of technogenic civilization once again emphasizes the need to develop the practice of post-technogenic civilization.

Résumé :
Abstract The application of the concept of robust design, based on Taguchi’s design philosophy, in formulating and solving large, computationally intensive, nonlinear optimization problems whose analysis is based on a linear system of equations is investigated. The design problem is formulated using a robust optimization procedure that utilizes the expected value of Taguchi’s loss function as the objective. An efficient solution scheme that uses approximate expressions for the gradients and employs a fast reanalysis technique for their evaluation is introduced. This approach is validated by solving a simple minimum cost welded beam design problem; where the dimensions of the weldment and the beam are found without exceeding the limitations stated on the shear stress in the weld, normal stress in the beam, buckling load on the beam and tip deflection of the beam. The method is then used to obtain the optimal shape of an engine connecting rod, that minimizes its weight when subject to geometric constraints on the shape variables, and behavioral constraints such as stress and buckling loads. The results obtained by solving the conventional and robust formulations of this problem, and the considerable savings in time that result by virtue of using the fast reanalysis technique are presented. The methodology presented in this work is expected to be useful in reducing the computational effort in obtaining insensitive designs of large structures and machines.

Résumé :
Intensive development of new media poses new challenges in learning and teaching foreign languages. A number of tools and online materials that support the development of language skills are available for university teachers and students. The emergence of online dictionaries significantly changed the translation process, which is for today's students faster, easier, and daily available on mobile devices such as phones, laptops, tablets. The main objective of this paper is to explore students' opinions about the use of online dictionaries for learning the German language. The research sample consists of students from the Faculty of Philosophy in Nis who study German as a second foreign language. A structured interview was used as an instrument for data collection; processing and data analysis was done by descriptive statistics. The results obtained confirm the initial hypothesis that the students use online dictionaries in learning the German language. The largest number of students used online dictionaries for translation of texts necessary for the preparation of examinations or tests, while a much smaller number of respondents use online dictionaries for the purpose of translating technical texts or materials that are not related to study purposes. The survey data show that students are informed about the benefits of using online dictionaries, such as speed, availability, better understanding, remembering new words for longer periods, as well as about the limitations relating to the lack of reliability, accuracy and precision. Conclusion is that online dictionaries are integral and indispensable part of learning foreign languages and that their use in the future most certainly will be on the rise. In this context, as the recommendation, the greater use of online vocabularies in foreign language teaching at universities is stated, which is in line with the requirements for the modernization of higher education.

Résumé :
Abstract Field-X is a large offshore gas structure located 50 nautical miles from Miri City, Malaysia. The reservoir is a High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) carbonate formation with high contaminants i.e., 1.8% mol of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and 18% mol of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This paper dwells on the completion design for the high-rate wells planned for this development. Exploration and appraisal wells showed severe reservoir properties that are "unique" as compared to other HPHT developments around the world. A multidisciplinary engineering team including HPHT drilling and completion specialists, production technologists, reservoir engineers, external specialist consultants, and facilities engineers are all working with a One Team One Goal mindset to address the challenges of completing this carbonate reservoir. Some of the completion design challenges addressed in this paper are Annular Pressure Management (APM) systems, perforation strategy for long intervals, well intervention philosophy, compaction and subsidence loading, thermal well interference due to the proximity of the platform well slots, HPHT monobore completion equipment design, qualification, and availability due to a very limited number of suppliers with long lead times. Another critical challenge addressed in this paper is an extensive material selection process to withstand the extremely corrosive well fluids, high temperature, and potential material cracking that historically has led to catastrophic consequences. As a result of the environment, exotic tubular materials are proposed based on intensive laboratory tests and computer simulations. Three-dimensional time history geomechanical and reservoir models explicitly detail the displacement compaction field which the downhole tubulars will be exposed in their lifetimes. Any annular pressure build-up will be handled by an APM system addressing the A, B, and C annuli with a permanent downhole gauge (PDG) installed for pressure and temperature monitoring tubing and annuli. These are some examples of the well design challenges tackled and resolved. The project is currently at the design phase, and all the thought process and design philosophies would be tested in this field. The authors wish that the lessons learned, engineering approaches, and design results will be useful in future sour HPHT completion developments.

Résumé :
Abstract Numerous CO2 injection pipeline applications have been developed and implemented in the past decades in the UAE and all around the globe. Transporting the CO2 in dense phase, rather than in gas or liquid phases, is well recognized of being techno-economically attractive with respect to its major CAPEX benefits of optimized pipeline material of construction; which is driven by the high water solubility in dense phase CO2 as well as the optimized pipeline size which is greatly influenced by the density and viscosity characteristics of supercritical/dense phase CO2. In light of the active deployment of dense phase CO2 injection EOR pipeline transportation across the various existing and future CO2 capture facilities across the UAE, ADNOC onshore technical expertise team has been conducting intensive research analysis on the unique thermodynamic aspects of dense phase CO2 pipeline systems. The focus was directed towards understanding the transient characteristics, which directly influence crucial design strategies including and not limited to CO2 purity specifications, CO2 pipeline pressure and temperature operating envelopes as well as the developed operating philosophy which involves start-up, shutdown and depressurization. While optimizing the economics of the carbon capture units (CCUS) is a pivotal strategy mandating rationalizing the dictated purity level of the captured CO2 and valorizing the projects. However, such thrifty initiatives to moderate the costs of the selected CO2 removal technologies can lead to underlying cascading effects of the lower purity recovered CO2 on systems design and its operation. As part of the nation's strategic objective to reduce carbon footprint, CO2 has been recovered for EOR re-injection applications. Relaxing the purity specification met by the CO2 capture units can positively improve the cost of the recovery plant while may potentially have adverse impacts on CO2 pipeline integrity. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the CO2 purity specification on the flow assurance safety performance of dense phase CO2 pipeline. It is worth highlighting that the design of CO2 systems is challenged by the paucity of the available reference design guidelines since domain of CO2 itself is still evolving under an active area of research. Although some previous publications have demonstrated the latent underlying effects of imputiries such as (N2, H2, SO2, NO2, CH4, C2H6, and Argon) on the physical and thermodynamic behavior of CO2 systems, however, this was supported by literature experimental modelling without transient analysis. In this paper, the behavior of varying CO2 purity levels on the design and operational aspects of CO2 pipeline is substantiated and both steady state and transient flow assurance modelling are presented. Gauging the system's design integrity cannot be solely assured from the perspective of steady state behavior and hence this paper's findings provide additional information to that previously published with the detailed modelling applied for varying purity scenarios of captured CO2 streams employed in EOR applications across the UAE. The findings of the analysis are benchmarked against plausible worldwide CO2 compositions with a wide range of impurity levels with further in depth demonstration of the transient effects which are usually absent in the available literature.

Résumé :
Abstract The fan systems of typical high bypass civil engines encounter strong flow distortions originating in the intake and in the bypass ducts and its bifurcations. These flow distortions cause the fan stage operation point to vary from its design intent, thus reducing the fan stage performance and increasing low engine-order fan blade forcing. A cyclic pattern design for the fan Outlet Guide Vanes (OGV) can be effectively used to recover the fan stage performance and to control its system-level aeromechanical behaviour. This paper presents the development of a OGV pattern design philosophy using numerical experimentation technique. Multiple fan-intake unsteady CFD computations are conducted by clocking the circumferential pressure profile at fan exit to understand its effect on fan rotor efficiency and 1EO fan forced response. The study revealed that a mild, low-harmonic fan back pressure field with a suitable clocking position is able to improve the fan efficiency and reduce the fan forcing simultaneously. Such a pattern can be generated by designing a cyclic OGV pattern that allows the bifurcation potential fields of controlled intensity and phase to pass through the OGV blade row. The notion of deliberately generating a clocked 1EO intra-stage static pressure field by means of cyclic OGV pattern design is termed as the translucent design philosophy. Further, a sensitivity study is performed to assess the effects of simultaneous distortions upstream and downstream of the fan in two flight conditions. The study showed that a correctly clocked intra-stage static pressure field can effectively counter the fan upstream flow distortions and at the same time improve the fan rotor performance and fan system aeromechanical behaviour. The implementation of the proposed translucent design philosophy in a new OGV pattern design tool is discussed.

Résumé :
Back-beveled transition welds for joining unequal wall thickness are often used in gas and oil transmission pipelines, as recommended in the pipeline codes and standards, such as CSA Z662, ASME B31.8, and ASME 31.4. However, one North American pipeline operator has successively utilized a counterbore-tapered design for transition of unequal wall thicknesses for over 30 years. The design philosophy of the counterbore-tapered joint is to reduce the stress concentrations in the heat affected zone, facilitate the welding of unequal wall thickness and NDT while achieving better quality, reliability, and productivity. By conducting a comparative finite element analysis of the two joint designs, the present study evaluated the pressure containment capacities, the stress concentration factors, the stress intensity factors, and the limit loads of plastic collapses for both the counterbore-tapered and the back-beveled designs. The effect of a key design parameter, the counterbore length, on the integrity of the counterbore design was also examined. The results of the comparative analysis showed that compared to the back-beveled joint, when the pipe materials of unequal wall thickness have the same strength, the counterbore-tapered joint has the same pressure containment capacity as the back-beveled joint. The back-bevel design offers lower stress concentration factor, lower stress intensity factor, and higher limit load of plastic collapse than the back-beveled design.

The article analyzes some theoretical and practical aspects of creativity. The author shares his opinion that the concept of creativity belongs to the fundamental concepts of philosophy, psychology, literature, art, pedagogy. Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form. The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.

Webb, Philip, et Sarah Fletcher. Unsettled Issues on Human-Robot Collaboration and Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing. SAE International, novembre 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2020024.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This SAE EDGE™ Research Report builds a comprehensive picture of the current state-of-the-art of human-robot applications, identifying key issues to unlock the technology’s potential. It brings together views of recognized thought leaders to understand and deconstruct the myths and realities of human- robot collaboration, and how it could eventually have the impact envisaged by many. Current thinking suggests that the emerging technology of human-robot collaboration provides an ideal solution, combining the flexibility and skill of human operators with the precision, repeatability, and reliability of robots. Yet, the topic tends to generate intense reactions ranging from a “brave new future” for aircraft manufacturing and assembly, to workers living in fear of a robot invasion and lost jobs. It is widely acknowledged that the application of robotics and automation in aerospace manufacturing is significantly lower than might be expected. Reasons include product variability, size, design philosophy, and relatively low volumes. Also, the occasional reticence due to a history of past false starts plays a role too. Unsettled Issues on Human-Robot Collaboration and Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing goes deep into the core questions that really matter so the necessary step changes can move the industry forward.
