Résumé :
The introduction of budget, cardinality and composition constraints to the portfolio selection problem implies the utilization of modern techniques for the achievement of the solution. In particular, this thesis will analyse Particle Swarm Optimization, a bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm that aims to explore the search space in order to find optimal solutions. The problem considered consists in the minimization of a coherent risk measure, the expected shortfall, subject to risk adjusted performance constraints, budget, cardinality and fractions constraints. In practice, a chosen number of particles are exploring the set of feasible solutions. To the position of each particle is assigned a value of the objective function which accounts for the risk measure and for penalties associated to the constraints. Particles move according to signals given by their neighbors, by the particle with the best result and by their own memory. The implementation of the PSO algorithm is used to find a feasible and well diversified portfolio composed by Exchange Traded Funds sold on the Italian market, Borsa Italiana.

The world is currently witnessing the effects of that period of fast technological advancements which has become known as the “Fourth industrial revolution”. Featuring it, there is the introduction of a broad set of new technologies, like big data and analytics, 3-D printing, the internet of things, and autonomous robots. If, on the one hand, the introduction of Artificial Intelligence allows firms to perform a wide range of tasks more efficiently, on the other hand, there are bad consequences its implementation may lead to. The focus of this thesis is the relationship between employment and Artificial Intelligence. Experts in the AI field and part of the literature warn about the massive technological unemployment that might occur in the near future. The common thinking is that thanks to AI, practically all jobs might be done by machines. In order to find out if the implementation of AI machines leads to unemployment, a systematic literature review is undertaken. The findings show the actual scenario is more complicated, with many factors to be taken into consideration.

This thesis aims to model some aspects of the economic environment as complex systems, and to analyze the dependencies of such systems using in particular Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) and Artificial Intelligence. In the first chapter, we aim to model the dynamics of the labor market with an ABM, paying particular attention to the effects that education produces in the competition between individuals looking for a job and on wage’s formation. We create two types of agents that interact with each other and with the surrounding environment: workers and firms. The main feature of the model is that the workers' skills are randomly assigned and obtaining an educational qualification takes place within the model endogenously. Even the technological level of the firms is randomly assigned, and these conditions lead to obtain very similar results at each run. We show that, by modifying the starting conditions, in any analyzed scenario the low-skilled workers are the ones penalized the most both in the employment rate and in the wage amount, and we stress how important the investment in human capital is. Robustness checks confirmed the reliability of the obtained results. In the second chapter, we propose a Convolutional Neural Network combined with a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Network (CNN-BiLSTM) for the forecasting of macroeconomic variables, analyzing 18 time series about the economy of the United States of America. In the third chapter, we develop a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN) for stock price forecasting. Considering both single-step and multi-step forecasts, the results obtained by our proposed architectures are promising and improve upon the considered baseline econometric models, both in the economic and financial context. We suggest that Artificial Intelligence (and in particular, Deep Learning) should be investigated and incorporated more by the economists, as we believe it can deliver excellent results, especially in an era where big data availability is growing more and more.

This paper investigates the accuracy of Country-Level Forecasts for six variables: Real GDP Growth, Inflation (Consumer Price Index), Short-Term Interbank Rate, Budget Deficit (as % of GDP), Current Account Balance (as % of GDP) and the Unemployment rate. The data used in this analysis is produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and covers the period 1996-2013. The two forecast horizons of primary interest are Current-Year (t) and One-Year-Ahead (t+1) forecasts. A range of statistical methods are used to ascertain the accuracy of the EIU forecasts in 103 countries for most of the variables, while the accuracy of the Unemployment rate forecasts used data for 68 countries. Generally, the results confirm this paper’s four primary hypotheses: (1) EIU forecasts are more accurate than No-Change-Forecasts; (2) EIU forecasts for higher income countries have smaller errors than forecasts for lower income countries; (3) The accuracy of EIU forecasts decreases as forecast horizon increases; and (4) The accuracy of EIU forecasts was relatively weaker during the period of the Global Financial Crisis (2008-2009) than in other periods.

Résumé :
British economic intelligence has a longer pedigree than the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) and is the precursor of inter-departmental intelligence coordination in Whitehall. Notwithstanding its ancestry, importance and the extensive resources committed to it, economic intelligence remains a missing field of intelligence history. This thesis is a history of a core intelligence capability from its emergence as a discrete field in the 1930s to the end of detente. For the postwar period Britain's economic intelligence expertise was located in the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The thesis explains how this anomalous situation arose, flourished and was eventually overthrown. It examines the organisations collating, analysing and assessing economic intelligence, placing special emphasis on the roles of the MoD's Joint Intelligence Bureau and Defence Intelligence Staff - two vital organisations almost entirely missing from intelligence historiography - and which together with economic intelligence constitute the 'Dark Matter' of Whitehall's intelligence machine. While most intelligence histories acknowledge the uniqueness of the intelligence process this study questions the reality of an intelligence 'community', proposing that the identification of intelligence assessment with the JIC has been at the expense of deeper knowledge of how the intelligence machine functions. Instead it emphasises the compartmentalisation and rivalries within and between departments, and their determination to resist central encroachment on their authority. Treating economic intelligence holistically presented special difficulties for Whitehall. The economic Departments resented the MoD as the locus of economic intelligence but were not prepared to undertake the work themselves or accept a central Cabinet Office capability. The result was a net loss of economic intelligence capability in Whitehall at the very moment when it was required to assess emerging global economic issues.

Résumé :
This thesis examines the British Joint Intelligence Bureau (JIB), which, between its creation in 1946 and its end in 1964, gathered, collated and processed topographic, economic, scientific, and atomic intelligence. It did so on an inter-service, national level. The thesis examines the creation of the organisation, in the aftermath of the Second World War, exploring what factors and which people supported the creation of the new agency. It then moves on to examine the work of the JIB in several of its key fields of work, namely topography, economics and monitoring the threat from Soviet nuclear forces, before examining some of the JIB’s international connections and how these contributed to its work. It concludes with an examination of how the JIB begat the Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS). It argues that the creation of the JIB was an appropriate response to the need to centralise and retrench in the intelligence machinery after the War, but that the organisation, in essence, represented a compromise between those who wanted to fully centralise military (and military-relevant) intelligence and those who wished to preserve service independence. Over the course of its existence it made important contributions to several key areas of policy – including mapping the Soviet Union for nuclear strike planning, the economic containment of the USSR, as well as China and North Korea during the Korean War, and in monitoring the production of Soviet bombers and missiles – before becoming a central component of the new DIS.

Résumé :
The objective of this thesis is to research the relationship between emotional intelligence and youth leadership using the international student organisation AIESEC as an example. The construct of emotional intelligence and behavioural competencies have gained increased attention beyond cognitive ability over the last three decades. Such competencies might bear great potential as important driver on the job market. The study at hand hypothesises that engaging in extracurricular activities and gaining leadership experience at young age positively affect students’ perceived level of emotional intelligence. Such an experience may enhance the acquisition and development of essential emotional and social competencies. These, in turn, may give the students a competitive edge on their prospective career paths. In a sample of undergraduate as well as graduate students of AIESEC in Germany behavioural competencies are examined in comparison to a control group using a 360-degree questionnaire. Practical implications as well as limitations are discussed. Moreover, suggestions for future research directions are given in the end.

Résumé :
Today, business intelligence (BI) systems have become a critical foundation for several organizations. BI systems have consistently been ranked among the top most priority of CIOs due to their ability to transform huge amount of data into organizationally-valued information to fulfill current business needs and faster decision making. However, the success of these systems is still questionable, as in many cases, BI systems have failed to yield the expected value for organizations. Literature shows that majority of prior research either discussed the benefits of BI systems or identified the factors that could improve organizational performance. None of the studies focussed to comprehensively count on adoption, utilization, and success (AUS) of BI systems, providing an appropriate success metrics, and proposing factors that can improve the success of BI systems. Therefore, the overarching aim of the thesis is to; i) present comprehensive knowledge about the current state of BI system AUS, ii) provide a success metrics to measure the success of BI system, iii) identify the factors to assess BI system use and decision-making performance at the individual level. The findings revealed a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the current state of BI system AUS. In addition, the results revealed a success metrics for measuring the success of the BI system. The empirical analysis demonstrated the significance of system factors i.e. system quality and information quality, and human factors i.e. user competence for improved decision-making performance, which in turns, increase the potential of success. The research will provide direction for researchers and practitioners to understand the ways to obtain the maximum value from implemented BI systems.

This dissertation contains four essays concerning the economics of information technology, intangible capital, and artificial intelligence. In the first essay, "Engineering Value: The Returns to Technological Talent and Investments in Artificial Intelligence" I describe how firms can appropriate some of the value of their employees' human capital by assigning firm-specific tasks. I then use a database of employment records to document dynamics in the valuation of publicly traded firms as they relate to different types of employment, focusing especially on AI skills. The second essay, "The Productivity J-Curve: How Intangibles Complement General Purpose Technologies" (coauthored with Erik Brynjolfsson and Chad Syverson) addresses the concern that new technologies with wide applicability throughout the economy can cause both underestimation and overestimation of total factor productivity.
As capital is accumulated, intangible investment output, and therefore productivity growth, will be underestimated only to later generate a yield (at which point productivity growth will be overestimated). Presenting a theoretical description of how to use corporate valuations to recover hidden investment value, we discuss how productivity growth and levels can be adjusted to accommodate these changes. Implications for research and development, computer hardware, and computer software investments are considered. The third essay, "Machine Learning and Occupational Change" (coauthored with Erik Brynjolfsson and Tom Mitchell), develops and implements a method to measure the labor market impact potential of machine learning technologies. Tasks are evaluated for their Suitability for Machine Learning (SML). We find that few occupations can be fully automated with machine learning, but many occupations will potentially be redesigned.
The final essay, "Do Labor Demand Shifts Occur Within Firms or Across Them? Non-Routine-Biased Technological Change 2000-2016" (coauthored with Seth Benzell and Guillermo Lagarda) decomposes labor share shifts of occupational groups into changes between firms, within firms, and due to entry and exit. We find that within-firm compositional shifts are an important component of changes in the overall labor market. We also find that the rate of within-firm shifts has declined in the period from 2000 to 2016. Together, these essays offer insights into how artificial intelligence technologies, particularly machine learning, will impact the U.S. economy.

Despite public belief, Artificial intelligence technologies are frequently embedded in software and applications. On one hand, they facilitate aspects of the daily life, for example, by using instant translation tools it is possible to communicate with everyone regardless of language barriers, or it is easier to search for a movie on Netflix because they are rearranged based on individual taste through a recommender system. On the other hand, the rise of AI tools is increasing discrimination and hence inequality and people are not even aware of such problems. For instance, fitting candidates for a job position are not called for an interview, because their resume has not been selected by a biased software that is favouring a specific race or gender. After discussing the main findings and ethical implications on the usage of AI presented by the today literature, the aim of the paper is to analyse whether Italian companies developing such technologies are aware of the negative impacts that these technologies have on the final users and what are the steps they take to prevent them.

Résumé :
This survey outlines the discussion on the controversial effects of robots and artificial intelligence as the core drivers responsible for major future disruptions in economies, which is particularly relevant to the future of employment. We essentially focus on labour markets and income generation. We consider the multifaceted implications of these emerging technologies, classifying the negative outcomes under the framework of classical innovation, while enhancing the positive results through the lens of a Neo-Schumpeterian approach. Concerning the influence of robotics on education and society, we analyse the education system and social issues and propose possible policies. This survey provides an overview concerning the current debate, highlighting the arguments of replacement vs. compensation, which we label as the Janus face of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Résumé :
Mobile communications has become an indispensable part of our everyday lives, with increasingly more people owning a smartphone, and being given access to a plethora of wireless access technologies: WiFi, 3G, and 4G. In an environment of such diversity, where each wireless access technology has its own distinct characteristics, network selection mechanisms provide an efficient way of handling communications services by matching the services' required quality with the characteristics of a particular access technology. This thesis explores the economic aspects of intelligent network selection in the context of Digital Marketplace - a theoretical market-based framework where network operators compete in a procurement auction-based setting for the right to transport the user's requested service over their infrastructure. It investigates the suitability of a firstprice sealed-bid auction as a network selection mechanism. Since this auction-based mechanism constitutes the main trading m echanism of the Digital Marketplace, the results reported herein affect its feasibility as a market for trading wireless communications services of the future. Since it lacks extensive and rigorous economic analysis, this thesis addresses this deficiency by providing an extensive game theoretic analysis of the network selection mechanism. This thesis creates an economic model of the network selection mechanism, and is the first to characterise the equilibrium bidding behaviour for an arbitrary number of network operators participating in the Digital Marketplace. It proposes three novel numerical methods that allow for numerical derivation of the equilibrium bidding behaviour: forward shooting method (FSM), polynomial projection method (PPM), and extended FSM (EFSM). The FSM and PPM methods allow for numerically approximating equilibrium bidding behaviour for a subset of all possible bidding scenarios, while the EFSM method enables computation of the numerical solution to all bidding scenarios. Finally, since the EFSM method becomes numerically unstable for large number of network operators, a novel methodology for approximating the network selection mechanism with an auction format for which there exist many well-defined and extensively studied numerical solutions is discussed.

Subjective estimation and perception, complexity of the environment under study, interaction amongst subsystems, lack of precise data, missing data, limited information processing capacity and ambiguity in natural languages are major forms of uncertainty facing Decision Makers in the process of delivering strategic decisions in economic intelligent systems. This study employs soft computing paradigm to capture and analyze uncertainty based on information risk factors via our proposed knowledge reconciliation model based on ontology and the FuzzyWatch model. We modeled the process of decision making from the point of problem definition to decision delivery (translation credibility) and include intangible factors with the fish-bone architecture. Ontological framework for Knowledge Reconciliation was developed to facilitate knowledge sharing and reuse among both human and computer agents while intangible factors, emotions and ambiguities in natural languages were captured with fuzzy membership function. We extended this operation with fuzzy that is – what ontology captures is interpreted by fuzzy techniques (FuzzOntology). The fuzzy match relation for information retrieval tagged “FuzzyWatch” improves the information search result thus reducing the risk of missing data which is of grave consequence in Economic Intelligence process. FuzzOntological model facilitates a flexible means of capturing intangible and uncertain factors as a means of resolving the ambiguity in natural languages. FuzzyWatch assists in reducing missing data problems. Future decisional process will contend with lesser information retrieval risks in Economic Intelligence process using this model

Healthcare systems play a critical role in ensuring people's health. Establishing accurate diagnoses is a vital element of this process. As sources highlight misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses as a common issue, a solution must be sought. Diagnostic errors are common in the emergency departments, which has been recognized as a stressful work environment. Today's industries are forced to deal with rapidly changing technological advances that result in reshaped systems, products, and services. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of such technologies that can work as a solution to diagnosis issues but comes with technical, ethical and legal challenges. Hence, the thesis intends to investigate how AI can affect the accuracy of diagnosis as well as how its integration in healthcare relates to the technical, ethical and legal aspects. The thesis begins with a literature review, which serves as a theoretical foundation and allows for a conceptual framework to be formed. The conceptual framework is used to select interviewees, which results in 12 interviews with professors, researchers, doctors and politicians. In addition, a survey is conducted to obtain the general public’s opinion on the matter. The findings present that AI is already mature enough to make more accurate diagnoses than doctors as well as release burden from medical practitioners in the form of administrative tasks. One obstacle is the incomplete data available since laws hinder sharing of patient data. Furthermore, the AI algorithms must be fit for all social minorities and not demonstrate racial discrimination. The European AI Alliance was established in 2018 with the aim to keep the technology in check. Similar initiatives can be created on a national- and regional level to maintain some form of control over its proper use.

The dissertation examines a case of industrial espionage by one of the parties involved in a forthcoming international negotiation. We want to know what consequences a burglary has for the actual negotiation. The dissertation consist of five hypothesis, of which the three first were empirically tested. The discussion of thesis four and five is supported basically by research literature, but have also found indirect support in the empirical study. A game theoretical model of four information sets is used. Thesis 1: Pay-offs do not change significantly from one information set to the other. confirmed Thesis 2: Behavior do not change significantly from one information set to the other. confirmed Thesis 3: The perception of fairness do not change significantly from one information set to the other. confirmed Thesis 4: International negotiations is socially so complex that it only makes sense to study the phenomena from an interdisciplinary angle. confirmed Thesis 5: A descriptive evolutionary approach can be an alternative to neoclassical economic theory in understanding the study of international negotiations. confirmed The study also confirms that economic theory is correct in excluding the ethical dimension from their models, as these factors have little influence on the end price. Fairness plays only a minor role in international negotiations. **

Résumé :
Global companies manifest a growing trend in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence, mainly due to the economic benefits it brings to the organizations, such as the increase of efficiency and productivity, by resulting in an overall rise in profits. However, companies must also be aware of some ethical issues that the adoption of AI requires. Unemployment, inequality, security, and transparency are only some of the ethical risks with which companies have to deal with. It turns out that managers are required to making decisions in the so-called “ethical dilemma” situations, in which his/her actions have different consequences towards different segments of the society. An apparent right action for a group of people, could be regarded as unethical practices for others, and therefore, it is not easy for manager takes a position. For this reason, three normative ethical theories are applied in the context of AI use within companies, as they provide some ethical guidelines. The three ethical theories taken into consideration are: the theory of responsibility by Hans Jonas, Kant’s categorical imperative, and the capability approach from Sen / Nussbaum. In order to operationalize and interconnect these three ethical theories, a business ethics Canvas is developed. Finally, this model is applied to a real corporate case: the introduction of the AI software, called SO99+, in Fischer Italia.

This thesis focuses on the establishment of an economic Intelligence in Côte d'Ivoire given cell specificities cultural and organizational of this country, particularly with regard to information. It is particularly interested in the sector of the tourism industry in Côte d'Ivoire. Business Intelligence is today part integral of the world economy based on the knowledge economy, it is the central link in the chain information and enables organizations to identify growth opportunities while protecting any threats. The concept, born within large groups of developed countries, often cannot be applied as to small and medium-sized organizations and even less to those of the countries of the third world. Côte d'Ivoire struggling to get out of the crisis and important organizational and structural disorders that undermine its economy, has difficulties to find its place in this 'new' collective culture of the information era. Our approach will be based on prior interviews to any analysis, to establish a model meso economic IE cell viable in Côte d'Ivoire. On a methodological level, this thesis is structured after a review of the literature, to the selection of a sample of 10 companies of the Ivorian tourism industry in a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews. It breaks down into six chapters, offering the go from the general to the particular. These work highlighted the expectations and needs of the actors in a given area in Business Intelligence and lead to a series of actions to achieve for the practice of Business Intelligence in the Ivorian context, within the chosen activity. In replicative logic, this implementation plan can be applied to all the sectors on the basis of the expectations of the actors

Background- Emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the dynamics of the business world. AI tools are changing the way marketers used to do business and these changes are so profound that it has become difficult for marketing managers to overlook the importance of investing in and adopting AI as an integral part of the marketing function. Companies which have implemented AI in their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and marketing as a whole, have reported significant impacts on company’s growth in terms of customer loyalty and profitability. In recent years, we also witness emergence of specialized software and IT companies which are dedicated to produce customized marketing solutions and programs targeted at customer relationship management and marketing. They produce enterprise applications for marketing automation, analytics, and application development. Consequently, the role of marketing managers has also transformed and is expected to change even more in the future. This calls for further research, as the area appears to have received little attention in relation to its weight of importance. Aim- The main purpose of our thesis is to contribute to the literature of what changes have been introduced in the function of CRM as a result of AI integration and how these ongoing changes have affected the role of marketing managers. Results- The findings of the research show a connection that exists between the 3 factors, Artificial intelligence, CRM and role of marketing managers/decision makers. The ongoing changes that are occurring in marketing as a result of AI are not only limited to transforming the marketing function of business, it is rather consequently changing the way marketing manager make decisions and the way they interpret data. It is becoming increasingly essential for marketing managers to upgrade their skillsets and acquire sound technical knowledge in addition to deep understanding of marketing concepts. Contribution- The evolution of AI is impacting all areas of business and to harvest maximum benefits, adoption and change in all aspects is equally important. This study offers guideline to marketing managers for successful application of AI and its impact on the overall performance.

Retailing has undergone radical changes with the advent of online sales channels and the constant use of the digital technology. To face these changes, many retail companies have begun to develop new strategies and adapt their business models, in order to exploit opportunities of the new "digital world". They start to rethink their strategies in a multichannel view. The research focuses on the multichannel integration reached by a small and medium retailer; it also tries to understand which are the preliminary impacts on the overall performance. Particularly the effectiveness of a multi-channel strategy, has mainly maximized thanks to the IT competencies of the retailer (Lih-Bin, Hock-Hai, & Vallabh, 2012). The empirical analysis also highlights that IT competence is an important activator to start the information integration process, in order to share the same information through different channels (touchpoint) (Neslin et al. 2006), and to provide an integrated multichannel customer experience. So the small and medium retailers face a major competitive challenge, which requires specific skills in terms of innovation and management.

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the drivers and barriers of adoption of technology such as AI and how it could facilitate an internationalization. The thesis also hopes to explore how Born Global e-commerce companies are working towards an adoption of AI into the companies CRM-system. The model of multiple case study was chosen together with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. This was done by collecting primary data from three different Born Global firms within the e-commerce sector, as well as one CRM expert company, all located in Sweden and active on the international market. Furthermore, the theoretical framework presented Born Global, Technology Adoption, Customer Relationship Management and Artificial Intelligence. With the theoretical framework in mind, the conceptual framework was developed to show how the theories are connected to each other. Thereafter, the empirical findings were first presented and analysed together with theory and the voice of the authors of the thesis. The analysis visualize both similarities and dissimilarities between the empirical findings and the theory presented in the thesis. The final chapter concludes the barriers and drivers that Born Global e-commerce companies faces when adopting AI into their CRM-system. It also explains how AI within CRM could be beneficial as a tool on the Global market, rather than in the actual process of internationalization. To conclude the authors present the fact that companies are not working towards an adoption of AI into their CRM-systems. However, further development within the field is presented as well as theoretical and practical implications.

In this article we compare institutional dimensions of National Intelligence Systems using Network Analysis. Based upon open data on intelligence agencies, interviews with country expert scholars, and bibliographical review, we were able to compile a database allowing the mapping of authority and communication links (edges) between three types of collective actors (nodes), namely intelligence agencies, coordinating bodies, and central government. So far, the database comprises matrix and graph information for thirty-four countries each with hundreds of data points. As a result, case studies on specific countries, as well as small n comparative analyses are being conducted. Comparative studies are driven either by interest in clusters of countries or in variables of interest (degree centrality, betweenness centrality, degree centralization, and betweenness centralization). In this particular exercise, results obtained indicate power distributions and organizational vulnerabilities at country level, allowing for comparisons between and among the national intelligence systems of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).
