Résumé :
This paper deals with improving comfort and handling for a ground vehicle through the coordinated control of different active systems available in passenger cars, e.g., electronic stability control, active roll control and engine torque control. The authors first describe separate control systems, each with its logic, showing advantages and limits, then propose various possible integrations, aiming at exploiting the benefits of a coordinated approach. Finally, the proposed control logics are tested on a vehicle model: simulation results prove the effectiveness of the approach in improving vehicle response during typical handling maneuvers.

Résumé :
This work aims to develop safety shoes, with thermal regulation systems, namely innovative heating and cooling systems. Heating system was developed using printing techniques; and cooling system was developed using the integration of Peltier modules in the shoe structure. These materials are based on the Peltier effect, in which, when an electric current is applied, the heat moves from one face to the other, being subsequently removed using thermal dissipation methods. This effect allows an active cooling. Given the high technological challenge of integrating cooling systems into footwear, this paper will present only developments related to cooling system.

Résumé :
Sustainable tall buildings are increasingly under rapid development and scrutiny worldwide. This will pave the way to a new generation of buildings designed in a unique form of Architectural systems integration. That is to say, finding new ways to integrate the systems, finding new common grounds and perhaps more comprehensive optimizations. The significance of integrating sustainable systems within tall buildings is the corner stone in delivering sustainable tall buildings globally. The paper looks into ways and means to better integrate passive and active renewable energy technologies and systems, green and sustainability measures into tall building’s design. Other issues such as architectural Iconography, and heritage and cultural influences on tall building’s design are also mentioned. The objective is to develop a framework for sustainable systems integration in buildings, proposing areas of further integrations customizable to any particular site context. The focus is on key sustainability strategies that drive design solutions to obtain maximum natural lighting, ventilation, heating and cooling, solar electricity/heat generation, possibility of wind energy generation and ground sourced amenities. Some design cases are presented exhibiting these strategies and design options, which clearly demonstrates the potential of tall buildings in creating a promising dense and sustainable future for cities around the globe.

Résumé :
This paper aims to simplify the interdisciplinary design process that will be used as a design tool for the viable integration of active solar energy systems into buildings, i.e., Building-Integrated Solar Thermal Systems—BISTSs; Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Systems—BIPVSs, through the creation of a roadmap. The research also aims supplement the work of researchers who have dealt with the creation of design tools that aim to optimise a specific aspect of a building design, or their geometric forms, in order to shape energy-efficient and sustainable architectural solutions. More specifically, a prescriptive design strategy is derived from the proposed design tool. This is based on five design steps, each of which is analysed and which lead to the creation of a comprehensive design tool for siting buildings so as to optimise the integration of solar systems. The originality of this tool is based on the fact that it makes an important step in the standardisation of these studies.

Résumé :
Abstract Advances in vehicle technologies brought changes into architectures of integration of chassis control systems. Alongside other improvements, integration can provide better vehicle handling, stability and safety. Different chassis control systems can use different control methods. Considering while in motion vehicle has movements in longitudinal, lateral and vertical direction, different control systems target different motion. If there is no coordination among active control systems, interaction and performance conflict can arise. This paper presents coordination of three control systems: electronic stability control (ESC), active front steering control (AFSC) and active suspension normal force control (ASNF). ESC is actually direct yaw and anti-roll control using selective wheel braking. ASNF is considered only on front axle. All systems use fuzzy-logic as a control method. Vehicle is presented as 14-DOF nonlinear full vehicle model and for the control purposes 3-DOF reference model was introduced. Emphasis was given on vehicle parameters characterizing dynamic behavior in longitudinal and lateral direction. Benefits of coordinated action of the three systems can be seen from the results gained through simulation of cornering event and single lane change in Matlab/Simulink. Coordinated control adds to the action of ESC itself, resulting in improved stability and handling, and thus safety of the vehicle.

Résumé :
This paper presents a new design method of semi-active suspensions based on the integration of neural networks and bilinear systems. It is known that semi-active suspensions with ideal linear components have a bilinear structure. However actual semi-active suspensions with nonlinear components have an structure which is not purely bilinear. In order to improve the performance of semi-active suspensions, neural networks and bilinear systems are integrated and used for the identification and optimal control of nonlinear semi-active suspensions. The validity and applicability of the proposed method are analyzed and verified theoretically and experimentally using a semi-active suspension model equipped with piezoelectric actuators.

Résumé :
This thesis investigates the principle of integration of vehicle dynamics control systems by proposing a novel control architecture to integrate the brake-based electronic stability control (ESC), active front steering (AFS), normal suspension force control (NFC) and variable torque distribution (VTD). A nonlinear 14 degree of freedom passive vehicle dynamics model was developed in Matlab/Simulink and validated against commercially available vehicle dynamics software CarSim. Dynamics of the four active vehicle control systems were developed. Fuzzy logic and PID control strategies were employed considering their robustness and effectiveness in controlling nonlinear systems. Effectiveness of active systems in extending the vehicle operating range against the passive ones was investigated. From the research, it was observed that AFS is effective in improving the stability at lower lateral acceleration (latac) region with less interference to the longitudinal vehicle dynamics. But its ability diminishes at higher latac regions due to tyre lateral force saturation. Both ESC and VTD are found to be effective in stabilising the vehicle over the entire operating region. But the intrusive nature of ESC promotes VTD as a preferred stability control mechanism at the medium latac range. But ESC stands out in improving stability at limits where safety is of paramount importance. NFC is observed to improve the ability to generate the tyre forces across the entire operating range. Based on this analysis, a novel rule based integrated chassis control (ICC) strategy is proposed. It uses a latac based stability criterion to assign the authority to control the stability and ensures the smooth transition of the control authority amongst the three systems, AFS, VTD and ESC respectively. The ICC also optimises the utilisation of NFC to improve the vehicle handling performance further, across the entire operating regions. The results of the simulation are found to prove that the integrated control strategy improves vehicle stability across the entire vehicle operating region.

Résumé :
Suspension systems are used to diminish the vibration of vehicles. The hydraulic dampers in conventional suspension systems are mainly designed with the orifices of the piston; however, the vibration energy will be transferred into waste heat. In recent years, conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles are used commonly. However, with the gradual depletion of fossil fuels, electric vehicles are developing. For this reason, the research focuses on recycling energy from the suspension of vehicles to improve the vehicle’s endurance. The purpose of this study is to develop a semi-active suspension control system with an energy harvesting system. Instead of the fixed orifices in conventional vehicles, an adjusting damping force method with variable resistance circuits system is studied for the semi-active suspension control system. Thus, we are able to develop semi-active control to improve the riding comfort. The energy harvesting system contains a hydraulic gear motor and a DC generator. When vehicles vibrate, the hydraulic damper serves as a hydraulic pump to compress the oil and drive the hydraulic motor. At the same time, the hydraulic motor drives the generator to generate electricity which will be stored in a battery. In this study, the test rig is the quarter-car system. We first design the novel hydraulic suspension system combining with the energy harvesting system. The simulation of dynamic mathematical model will be performed and analyzed by MATLAB/Simulink. Besides that, the semiactive control by the fuzzy sliding mode controller will be realized in the hydraulic suspension system with energy harvesting system. Finally, a test rig is set up for practical experimental implementation and verification.

Résumé :
This article presents the preparation of a working physical mock-up wingtip device with morphing functionality. The objective of the mechanical demonstrator is to achieve a technology readiness level to establish confidence that one would proceed to an in-service R&D initiative. To establish the feasibility of scalable technology integration for product development, a tier schedule is employed to demonstrate material compliance, mechanism kinematics and perform bandwidth experimentation. Potential composite materials for design of flexible skins (i.e., Hexweb®, Kevlar® 49 and HexPly®) were assessed using a spectrum of experimental verification procedures. These results are embodied to benchmark qualitatively and quantitatively the mechanical performance of the potential materials to use in a preliminary optimized morphing schedule.

Résumé :
Over the past few years, China has displayed a wide range of advances in military capabilities and infrastructure, including its test of a hypersonic glide vehicle coupled with a fractional orbital bombardment system and evidence of new intercontinental ballistic missile silos. While China and the United States remain at political odds, there are indications that China’s strategies in space, cyberspace and nuclear domains are increasingly converging with those of the USA, as well as Russia. A key question is whether this strategic convergence is a stabilizing or destabilizing phenomenon. To answer the question, this paper explores the current state of Chinese discussions on multidomain deterrence and strategic stability, with a focus on active defence and proactive defence. It then examines how these concepts are manifesting themselves in China’s postural and technological indicators, including pre-mating of nuclear warheads to delivery platforms, expanded nuclear arsenal size, possible shifts towards launch on warning, integration of dual-capable systems, and advances in machine learning and autonomy. It concludes with a discussion of what these trends mean for future strategic stability talks.

Résumé :
Active transportation can play an important role in promoting more physically active and positive public health outcomes. While walking and biking provide significant physical health benefits, their modal share remains low. As a new form of micromobility service, shared e-scooters can enhance the suite of options available in cities to promote active transportation and fill in the gaps when walking or biking are not preferred. Although e-scooters show potential as a mode of transportation, it is unclear whether people will adopt the technology for everyday use. Furthermore, shared micromobility (e.g., electric scooters) is gaining attention as a complementary mode to public transit and is expected to offer a solution to access/egress for public transit. However, few studies have analyzed integrated usage of shared e-scooters and public transit systems while using panel data to measure spatial and temporal characteristics. This study aims to examine the adoption and frequency of shared e-scooter usage and provide policy implementation. To do so, the researchers launched a survey in the Chicago region in late 2020 and collected a rich data set that includes residents’ sociodemographic details and frequency of shared e-scooter use. To characterize the frequency, the researchers used an ordered probit structure. The findings show that respondents who are male, low income, Millennials and Generation Z, or do not have a vehicle are associated with a higher frequency of shared e-scooter use. Furthermore, this study utilizes shared e-scooter trips for a 35-day measurement period from 10 shared e-scooter operators in Chicago, where the researchers used a random-parameter negative binomial modeling approach to analyze panel effects. The findings highlight the critical role of spatial and temporal characteristics in the integration of shared e-scooters with transit.

Butler, Nadia, et Soha Karam. Key Considerations for Integrating COVID-19 Vaccination Services : Insights from Iraq and Syria for the MENA Region. SSHAP, septembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.034.

Résumé :
With the COVID-19 pandemic well into its third year, governments and response partners are recognising that it no longer makes sense for COVID-19 services, including vaccination, to exist in isolation. There is growing recognition of the potential for integration with other services as the way forward for COVID-19 vaccination. This has recently begun to occur in various countries, but until now, there has been little evidence available as to the success of these initiatives. Service delivery integration occurs where “managerial or operational changes to health systems bring together inputs, delivery, management, and organisation of particular service functions in ways that are contextually appropriate and person-centred with the aim of improving coverage, access, quality, acceptability, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness” (Haldane et al. 2022) This brief draws on evidence from academic and grey literature and consultations with partners working in the COVID-19 response to review current integration efforts (as of August 2022) and explore potentially effective ways to integrate COVID-19 vaccination into other services in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Recent guidance on integration from WHO has also been cross-referenced where relevant. Iraq is taken as a detailed case study due to the efforts already made there on integration of COVID-19 and routine immunisation (RI) services. Global integration experiences and a brief discussion of integration efforts in Syria are also included. The brief is part of the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) series on social science considerations relating to COVID-19 vaccines and was written for SSHAP by Nadia Butler supported by Soha Karam (Anthrologica). Verbal consultations and reviews of the draft were provided from response partners in Iraq and other locations within the region (IFRC MENARO, Iraq MoH, UNICEF Iraq, UNICEF MENARO, UNICEF Syria, WHO EMRO). The brief was requested by the UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Office (MENARO) and is the responsibility of SSHAP.
