This qualitative inquiry built on a relational and dynamic epistemology, distinguishes between four psychologies of unemployment, agency-deprivation, social perception, self-perception and finally dialectical. Within a dialectical psychology of unemployment a dialogical analysis is developed which takes the locus of intervention in unemployment as the interaction between unemployed people, those that work with them and the social knowledge that surrounds the phenomenon. The inquiry uses a longitudinal participatory action approach with two training and guidance centres in Central Scotland, 'Strategic Delivery' and the 'Young Person's Centre' between 1999 and 2001. This involved participant observation on the New Deal and Skillseekers; training programmes, meetings and interviews with managers, unemployed clients and front-line staff. 14 young people were followed through their pre-vocational training between January 2ooo and April 2ooo and follow up interviews were carried out in February and March 2ool. The study also involved social consultancy on measuring soft skills at SD and developing a person-centred approach at the YPC, where the YPC became understood as a multi-voiced organization[Bakhtin (1986)]. The inquiry produced actions, recommendations to the organizations and interpretative findings around the use of a dialogical analysis. Three co-created 'actions' on self-assessment measures for unemployed people are described. The study recommends that two key foundational concepts in the area of unemployment 'social inclusion' and 'employability' need to be reconsidered for this cohort of young people where 42.9% remain unemployed at the end of the research. Finally in making sense of organizational change the study explores the extent to which managers within the YPC were in a dialogue with the socio-political discourse and the movement in meaning of the term 'person-centred'. The study points to the importance of organizations developing an authentic dialogue with their client group. It assesses the role that psychology is playing in the current dominance of a self-perception psychology of unemployment.

This thesis presents an account of the roles played by social actors in the implementation of unemployment policy in the UK. Lipsky’s (1980) theory of street-level bureaucracy has been adopted, updated to the contemporary context of the managerial state (Clarke & Newman, 1997) and developed in the specific case of the Jobcentre. The analysis is based on data collected during an ethnographic investigation of one case study Jobcentre office in Central Scotland. The methods consisted of six months of direct observation, interviews with 48 members of Jobcentre staff, semi-structured interviews with 35 users and analysis of notified vacancies and guidance documents. The argument is that front-line workers re-create policy as they implement it. They do so in reaction to a series of influences, constraints and incentives. Users therefore receive a service that is a modified version of the official policy. Users do not necessarily accept the policy that they are subjected to. They do not identify with the new managerialist notion of customer service because as benefit recipients they are denied purchasing power, choice and power. Unemployment policy is not delivered uniformly or unilaterally because front-line staff are active in developing work habits that influence the outcomes of policy. Policy is accomplished by staff in practice by categorising users into client types. This is significant because staff represent the state to the citizen in their interaction. Users are also active in accomplishing policy, whether they conform with, contest, negotiate or co-produce policy. Understanding what unemployment policy actually is, and what it means to people, depends on understanding these social processes by which policy emerges in practice.

The purpose of the study was to investigate a modification of a managerial accounting technique, Activity-Based Costing (ABC), as a tool for addressing Information Resource Management (IRM) concerns within business processes. To indicate that ABC has been adapted for the IRM context, this study called the tool "Activity-Based Analysis" (ABA). ABA includes ABC's costing methodology as well as additional methods to address broader issues. The research method was a single-site case study at a property and casualty insurance company. The unit of analysis was a business process consisting of activities needed to provide claims handling services for workers' compensation insurance. Four questions guided the study: 1. Did ABA identify management information required to monitor process effectiveness and efficiency? 2. Did ABA support outsourcing decision making by identifying IRM cost components within business processes? 3. Did ABA identify information resources; that are sharable? 4. Did ABA identify differences between Company organizational characteristics andIRM department organizational characteristics?

Historically, the poor have always been socially, politically and economically marginalized in society. The South African Government’s Cooperative Act 2005 presents a promising step in the right direction towards addressing poverty and unemployment in rural areas. The research looks at two case studies and site relevant findings. This study gives a brief introductory account of cooperatives with regard to their history and existence, particularly in South Africa. The research report focuses on two case studies, where the organisational structures and business operations will be examined and compared. Finally the report will draw lessons to indicate the possible social and economic viability of these cooperatives and their place in rural development. Based on the findings and conclusions, a number of recommendations are made on cooperatives in the rural sector. The research utilizes secondary data, such as documents, records, the internet, books and literature on the subject of cooperatives and related aspects of unemployment and poverty, forming a background of cooperatives in the South African rural sector. Primary data takes the form of structured (personal one on one) and semi-structured (group discussion) interviews. The primary and secondary data present the basis for the report findings and conclusions. Where possible, the relevant recommendations are made.

This study investigates the extent to which South African short-term insurance companies manage climate change risk, as evidenced in their annual and sustainability reporting. The study context takes into account the fact that the world’s climate has been changing at a more accelerated rate since the early 1970s, causing disasters that have negatively affected world economies in the last ten years. Insurers, due to their huge financial resource base, long history of spurring innovation around risk and encouraging loss-reducing behaviour as well as high levels of vulnerability, have been identified as one industry that could lead societies in finding solutions to climate change risk. A key element of such a corporate resolve involves taking a leadership position which makes business sense for insurers. As such, this research analyses how innovative solutions to change-related problems could result in reduced exposure to climate change in line with corporate triple bottom line objectives. Based on a purposive sampling of short-term insurance companies operating in the South African market during the 2007 financial year, the study uses the companies’ annual and sustainability reports in order to critically assess evidence of climate change-related performance. The assessment is undertaken against the best practice indicators of climate change risk management, as defined by Ceres – a global researcher on climate change management in the business context. The data analysis is largely qualitative, consisting of a narrative presentation of the results and a conceptual application of the results to the triple bottom line which forms the theoretical framework of this study. The study finds that the South African short-term insurers were generally not living up to the climate change management ideals, in comparison to their multinational counterparts. For the South African short-term insurers, corporate strategic product innovation and planning was insignificant. Also negligible was board involvement, as well as CEO involvement, though in at least one case of the 4 local short-term insurance, there was evidence of extensive CEO involvement in climate change risk management. On the whole, these findings represent a lapse in corporate governance inasmuch as climate change risk management is concerned. Local short-term insurers generally performed well in the area of public disclosure, with their scores ranging from insignificant to extensive. In contrast, multinational short-term insurers’ performance with regard to climate change risk intervention ranged from insignificant tointegrated, across the five governance areas of board oversight, management execution, public disclosure, emissions accounting and strategic planning. As such, the study broadly recommends that short-term insurers in South Africa should make climate change part of their overall risk management strategies in order for them to remain competitive in an environment of increased climate change-related risk. More specifically, the research project recommends that the local insurers should proactively lead climate change mitigation measures through, for instance, investing in clean energy projects and incentivising their clients’ participation in the carbon market to prepare themselves for possible regulatory restrictions after the Copenhagen climate change conference planned for December 2009. This study also challenges insurers to help communities and as well as other businesses in their value chain to reduce their negative impacts on the world’s climate and to be more resilient against disasters which may arise from the high levels of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. Further, it recommends that insurers should create internal board and executive level climate change-related structures, as these will facilitate the integration of the proposed initiatives into their overall sustainability strategies. Above all, the study recommends that insurers should enhance the reporting of their climate change-related risk, opportunities and initiatives to improve their integrity.

However, besides the vision and managerial efforts of emphasizing on quality, individual behaviors and human nature are still inevitably dominate the outcome. The content of the research is to provide a training vehicle to address moral and morale issues with respect to the sales, the delicate matters of handling a confused or dissatisfied insured, and, furthermore, the attitude of the first-line staff members. Our discussion covers legal as well as practical aspects of the matter and concentrate on the internal discipline and business integrity.

In order to reduce the risk in interest loss of insurance organizations, the Department of Insurance of Ministry of Finance has enlisted the investment-type insurance applications as “Key Encouragement” development subject. On the other hand, in order to maintain financial integrity and various other considerations in complying government strategies, the insurance organizations were more than glad to comply. While the investment environment undergoes a turn for the better, the insurance organizations slowly drove the product strategy towards investment- oriented insurance products one after another. In addition, “One-Stop-Shopping” consumer philosophy has also influenced the way insurance industry commences their sales. At the end, the insurance industry must increase ways of sale to compensate. Normally, the insurance planning and investing in financial management were two mutually exclusive actions, and each of them occupies different time and human resources to manage. However, investment-oriented insurance products have combined the two so that one only needs to spend half the time and work with only one group of people, and could achieve the protection of insurance and well-planned financing investment. Therefore, insurance organizations actively develop investment-oriented insurance products in order to provide consumers with a product that has the insurance product on the plate, and bonds investments and assets management as side dishes. This kind of 3-in-1 product thus has the characteristics of insurance protection, financial management and investment. In all recent documents discussing investment-type insurance, all the studies focused on how management and supervisory level should react to this new product and the strategy of insurance industry operations. There have not been any studies on combining the investment-type insurance with financial management. Therefore, this essay will discuss this combination based on analysis of existing financial investment and management tools. In addition, the author will take the example of K Life Insurance Group, in which the author is working for, research reports assembled by relevant organizations, domestic and foreign articles and magazine articles, through inductive study and analysis. Now is the best time for insurance industry to introduce investment-type insurance products. The insurance agents must be familiar with relevant financial knowledge, understanding the pros of purchasing investment-oriented insurance product, and the cons of buying bonds. The insurance agents must become the client’s and the family’s financial consultant. They must also search for possible customers who are planning for their retirements, for the education costs of their children, for starting their own business, for their financial management, and/or for tax management. The insurance must act as universal financial management consultants. On the other hand, the insurance industry must also begin the transition towards integrated financial products and improve internal management and technical standards. The insurance industry should also improve the publicity of investment-type insurance products sales and variety of investment targets, efficiently prevent and reduce operation risks, increase core competitive ability and establish the long-term competitive advantages.

The thesis examines the generosity of unemployment benefits granted to non-standard (outsiders) and standard workers (insiders) in four different countries (Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Sweden) between 2000 and 2017, which were selected based on their value to represent a different institutional legacy. These legacies were based off the Varieties of Capitalism literature and the Welfare Regime literature. Comparative Case Study Analysis was the chosen methodology to assess the unemployment benefit reforms, which were primarily retrieved from the LABREF database. Two supporting theories were used to analyse the outcomes, dualization theory and liberalization theory. The findings showed a clear correlation between the institutional legacies of each case and the generosity of the unemployment benefits given to insiders and outsiders. The alternative explanation that a common trend towards liberalization made unemployment benefit systems converge in all four countries could not be supported.

This paper applies the panel regressions of life insurance premiums and unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP) for 19 countries from 2007 through 2015. First, we apply the Levin, Lin and Chu (LLC) test developed by Levin et al. (2002). Our empirical results reveal that the variables are a mixture of I(0) and I(1); second, we use the Hausman specification test developed by Hausman, J. A. (1978), and the results reveal that we should choose the random model; finally, the panel regressions results indicate that if the gross domestic product (GDP) raises then the life insurance premiums will increase,and if the unemployment raises then the life insurance premiums will decrease.

This research is conducted using case analysis, and related information gatheredfrom the literature as well as other secondary data sources for analysis. The main contents of this case study focus on M &; A motivations of the life insurance industry in Taiwan. By means of the Acquisitions of Ruentex Group and Nan Shan life, CTBC and MetLife, and mergers of CTBC Life and Manulife Life, Fubon Life and ING Life, to explore the motivations and objectives of life insurance companies. There are some results come out from this research.First, the main motivations of acquired firms are synergy factor and diversification of operations, followed by sales channels, increased market-share and international strategy. Then, the retiring reasons of foreign life insurance companies are implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the corporation restructure.Finally, these analyses would provide some reference for life insurance companies’ M&;A strategies in uses of future funds.

The purpose of the research study is to gain in-depth insight into the impact of unemployment on psychological well-being among young coloured people in Worcester. The study is based on a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with twelve unemployed, coloured persons in Worcester. The ages of the participants ranged from 18 to 30 years, with the median age of 20.33 years. Purposive sampling and snowball techniques were used to select these unemployed young persons. Two instruments, a demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide, were used to gather data on the research participants. The transcribed data were analysed by means of content thematic analysis and aided by thematic network analyses. The findings of the study suggest that unemployed participants experience negative feelings daily as a result of their unemployment. Some participants blamed themselves for previous mistakes that they had made, they feel a sense of failure to provide for their children's needs as parents, they expressed feelings of guilt or shame, and compared themselves with employed peers, which is indicative of low self-esteem. Furthermore, unemployment has a financial impact on participants which includes financial dependency on others, unemployment serving as a barrier to being able to fulfil future plans and aspirations as well as unemployment having an effect on the social life of participants in that participants appear to withdraw from social interaction and isolate themselves. For some participants there was a loss of a sense of purpose experiencing difficulties in structuring their time and generally spent their time with passive and purposeless activities. Despite being unemployed, certain other participants seek a sense of purpose and try to spend their time engaging in menial tasks or social activities. Participants expressed an overall positive attitude towards employment which includes regarding work as being very important as well as remaining optimistic about their chances of finding a job. Coping with unemployment daily emerged as one of the struggles experienced by the participants in the study. The process of coping with unemployment daily includes utilising a variety of coping strategies to manage their unemployment as well as to manage negative feelings that emerge from being unemployed. The coping strategies indicated by the participants include listening to music, sleeping, reading the Bible, and talking to their friends or family members. Participants also revealed that they needed and received two types of social support from family and friends to help them cope with their unemployment predicament; including a need for emotional support and a need for instrumental support. Participants in the study experienced judgment by community and family members daily because of their unemployed status which includes stigmatising comments. These comments are internalised by participants which may exert a negative impact on their psychological well-being. Limitations of the study includes, participants could have answered the questions of the semi-structured guide in a socially desirable manner as well as the audio-recorded interviews were transcribed into Afrikaans and translated into English and as such, some of the meaning of what the participants had said could have been lost in the translation process. Recommendations for further research includes exploring whether perceived support have a greater beneficial effect on the psychological well-being of unemployed individuals than received support, as well as the role such types of support play in coping with unemployment.

This study aims to develop a data mining framework to analyze key factors of unemployment duration and the complex relationships among each factor. Conducted on the basis of real data collected from a representative Human Resource Agency in Taiwan. In order to extract latent knowledge and patterns from huge data about job seekers. This study formulates research hypotheses based on literature review, domain expert knowledge and supported by Bayesian Network, statistical test and correlation coefficient to screen out 15 key factors of the job seekers’ “general information, job requirement, education, working experience and new work category” have a significant effect on unemployment duration. Then, using Bayesian network to clarify the relationships among each factor and unemployment duration. Finally, this study presents a process of case studies that can extract the useful knowledge of data mining results efficiently. Major findings indicate that unemployment duration difference among each field, the employment tendency of different type of job seekers and job transition patterns in the current domestic labor market. For example, in a particular industry, workers with 3 to 6 years’ seniority may have a high turnover intention, the reemployment difficulty among middle aged workers, the regional wage gaps and other social issues. The results assist various types of job seekers obtain comprehensive information to find their own niche in the labor market. In the meantime, this study also provides the decision-making reference for government and enterprise. On the other hand, Human Resource Agency can base on the results to improve their services. Micro Finance Institutions are being advocated as vehicles to provide poor people with loans to start business enterprises. Micro Health Insurance is offered to insure against the risk of ill-health in the enterprise. An interesting aspect of this initiative is that it is donor driven to service the needs of the poor and the 'unbankable.' However, it was the researcher's considered view that it may not be easy to build a sustainable Micro Health Insurance Scheme for poorer people. The study thus sought to explore the possibility of developing a sustainable Micro Health Insurance Scheme in the context of acute poverty, free health care, the burden of HIV/AIDS and other diseases, the growing informal sector, erratic and unreliable incomes and the nature of risks faced by these prospective clients. To develop a thorough understanding of the subject matter, extensive reading was carried out. The researcher then designed an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The study had a total of 34 respondents, most of whom where members of a Financial Service Co-operatives, which are community-banking structures that provide a range of financial products for poorer people and those in the informal economy. It is clear from the study that these people are faced with a number of risks. There are several problems that may affect the possibility of building a sustainable health insurance scheme. The present study does not provide any statistical evidence but explores the theme of using the concept of risk and vulnerability to understand the poverty in which Micro Finance and Micro Health Insurance is located. The study provides an array of policy options that can be explored to provide for the health care needs of poorer people, as well as suggestions for future research.

This study sought to examine the value of modus operandi (MO) information in the investigation of short-term insurance fraud. A comprehensive literature study was conducted concerning the dynamics of MO information in forensic investigation and short-term insurance fraud in South Africa and internationally, and individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with forensic investigators at Santam and MiWay to promote knowledge and understanding of the importance of MO information in short-term insurance fraud investigations. Results of this research indicate that participants did grasp the significance of MO information in the investigation of short-term insurance fraud. It is, however, apparent that they did not optimally exploit MO information regarding insurance fraud as a result of limited experience, ineffective databases and the inaccessibility of available data – all of which prevent the improvement of utilising MO data pertaining to short-term insurance fraud. Forensic investigators in the short-term insurance industry isolate themselves from each other and fail to share the available MO information amongst each other, resulting in a non-systematic fragmented approach to short-term insurance fraud investigation. The study identifies the challenges and shortcomings experienced by forensic investigators at Santam and MiWay that prevent the optimal utilisation of MO information in the investigation of short-term insurance fraud. The study then suggests a set of recommendations that could assist forensic investigators and other role-players in enhancing the utilisation of such information.

This study is about the investigation of the impact of organisational culture on employee commitment during an acquisition process in an insurance organisation. A sample of 318 employees was selected from a population of +/-600 in a South African insurance organisation. The sample was categorised between employees in non-management as well as those in management positions. Managers were further categorised as junior managers and middle managers. These participants were selected based on the fact that they were not involved in the strategic decision-making processes during the acquisition. Thus they had no input in the decision making regarding the acquisition process. Employees on senior management level and above did not form part of the study because they were involved in the acquisition process's strategic decision-making. The sample was also based on employees who were already employed by the organisation when the acquisition process was finalised. The acquisition process started in 2013 and was finalised in 2017. The descriptive correlation research method was used for the study. The methodological approach adopted was the quantitative approach analysed based on descriptive statistics followed by inferential statistics using the SPSS 2017 (version 25). Analysis of data was done using Pearson correlation coefficient, regression analysis, independent T-test and ANOVA. The internal consistency of the measuring instruments was determined using the Cronbach's alpha. Questionnaires, namely the Organisational Culture Questionnaire (OCQ) and Organisational Commitment Scale (OCS), were used to measure organisational culture and employee commitment, respectively. The results revealed a high level of internal consistency across the scale and the items of the OCQ (EC & PC) and OCS variables. The conclusions of the empirical study describe the impact of organisational culture on employee commitment during an acquisition process. The empirical study indicated that the impact of preferred organisational culture on employee commitment is insignificant. However, the impact of existing organisational culture on employee commitment is significant. The findings further indicated that the dominant existing culture is the role culture whilst the dominant preferred culture is the power culture. Affective commitment was found to be dominant in terms of employee commitment. The limitations of this study are presented together with recommendations for future research. The recommendations for the profession of industrial and organisational psychology highlight pertinent aspects for practicing psychologists and managers in this field. Based on the study's findings, organisations are advised to diagnose their cultures and determine how it affects their employees’ commitment in addition to other recommendations provided.

The study aims to investigate the current perceptions of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIP) for domestic workers in a township called KwaNdengezi, a Durban Metro area, Pretoria section. The study used qualitative research methods to gather and interpret data. A sample consisting of 13 domestic workers, 10 employers of domestic workers, Department of Labour (UIF official) and representative from the South African Domestic and Allied Workers Union (SADAWU) were interviewed. The study found that there are negative perceptions about the policy due to the fact that people (employers and domestic workers) do not understand the policy objectives and how the policy tries to meet these objectives. The study also found that SADAWU was participated in setting the agenda for policy by identifying the problems of domestic workers and petitioning government to address them. Lastly, the study highlighted that the main problem with the implementation of the policy was that it was not communicated clearly enough which has led to many misinterpretations of the policy.

The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between the business cycle and the number of thefts and insurance claims in Hualien County/City and Taipei City. The data were collected between January 1996 and October 2011, a total of 190 months for observation. Taiwan business cycle base dates and the high and low points in the stock market index were used to correlate with the number of thefts and insurance claims in Hualien County/City and Taipei City to analyze, research, and verify the relationships of leading and falling behind at the peaks and troughs of the business cycle. This study empirically proves that: (1) when the business cycle is at a peak, there is greater influence on the number of automobile thefts in Hualien County/City, and a smaller influence on the number of automobile thefts in Taipei City. The primary reason is because when the business cycle is good, there is an increased demand in automobile parts, thus, there is an increase in the number of automobile theft cases in Hualien County/City, resulting in an increase in the number of insurance claims; (2) whether during the peak or recession of the business cycle, the number of insurance claims for automobile theft in Hualien County/City are greatly influenced by the business cycle and the TAIEX.

With the advancement of internet, telecommunication and mobile technologies, new digitally-driven business models have emerged which are disrupting traditional business models and are having a profound impact on entire industries around the world. Enterprises today are facing unprecedented challenges and are required to change their approach to provisioning and consuming technology services. Cloud computing is a key enabler for this change. Being acclaimed as a disruptive innovation, cloud computing has contributed to the success of start-ups and industry disrupters, since it allows them to provide technology services at speed and scale without the commitment and investment of costly technology infrastructure. However, despite general acceptance by organizations worldwide, cloud computing adoption by large enterprises, particularly those from highly regulated industries such as financial services, has been slow and its utilization has so far been in very limited areas. It is important to understand the factors which impact these large organizations’ decision for adopting and utilizing cloud computing, so that actions can be taken to facilitate the adoption and utilization processes. The objective of this study is to gain deep understanding of drivers and challenges associated with cloud computing adoption and utilization by large financial institutions in Australia. Through multiple case study grounded on the TOE framework, involving a major bank and a large insurance company in Australia, this study reveals a common set of drivers and challenges, which will be useful for guiding cloud adoption and utilization for companies in similar situations. It also recommends actions for overcoming challenges identified through this study.

This study investigated the effect of participation in a 14-day career redirection program on the reemployment, explanations for unemployment, and levels of depression and self-esteem of 44 unemployed adults who had recently become physically disabled. The career redirection program was delivered using an extended Solomon four-group design. The subjects’ explanations for their unemployment, and their levels of depression and self-esteem were measured on at least two of four possible occasions: (a) before participating in the program, (b) after completing the program, (c) after waiting to participate in the program, or (d) eight weeks after completing the program. The researcher contacted the subjects who completed the program after eight weeks to determine their employment status and to request the completion of the final questionnaire battery. A random sample of the subjects who finished the program were also interviewed in-depth to obtain detailed information about their experiences of: (a) becoming disabled, (b) being confronted with the need to change jobs as a result of their disabilities, and (c) participating in the career redirection program. All the incidents reported by the subjects that related to their emotional reactions to these three experiences were identified from transcripts of the interviews. Incidents describing similar reactions to components of these experiences were grouped into categories. Six stages were discerned from the analysis of the categories of emotional reactions. Taken together, these six stages described a career redirection process. The results of the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the treatment program in assisting the subjects through the career redirection process. Eight weeks after finishing the program, 60.5% of the subjects were involved in reemployment activities (11.6% working; 28% independent in job search; 20.9% taking training). The need for constructive and effective sustainable community development in South Africa is recognised as a cornerstone for national development. Having a clear understanding of sustainable development and sustainable community development is a prerequisite in developing sustainable communities. A current rate of unemployment and low skills level pose a threat to sustainable development within the communities. There is growing interest within businesses and organisations to contribute towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes and initiatives. However, this is an enormous task to address socioeconomic challenges in South Africa due to limited resources and high expectations. The businesses should implement well-structured plans for corporate social responsibility. Furthermore, planned initiatives generally tend to appropriately promote social harmony within targeted community. Skeptics of CSR often claim that business should focus on profits and let the government or non-profit organisations deal with social and environmental issues. The Eskom’ power stations under this study do make some contribution to social and economic development in South Africa, which is realised through corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy within the areas of Ermelo and Balfour. Most people in these communities feel they have been neglected for a long time as their social concerns have not been resolved. The community have recently pressurised these power stations to become corporate citizens; to take on CSR and work towards sustainable community development in their areas. There is a perception within the community that the management of Camden and Grootvlei power stations is not actively involved in executing CSR programmes; hence the intention of the study is to present an interesting analysis of these perceptions by exploring the experienced outcome of CSR initiatives around Ermelo and Balfour in improving the livelihood of the people, inter alia: unemployment and education. The case study research design was adopted for this research and employed a qualitative approach to understand the individual perceptions about the phenomenon under study. The data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews and electronic email. The responses from the participants were analysed using ATLAS.ti software to identify codes and patterns in primary data. The total selected sampling was 25, but those who participated were only 17. From the key findings, it was evident that these power stations do make some contributions towards CSR within their community. However, this study revealed a gap in the way CSR is practiced and implemented: social responsibility and real sustainable development do not reach the community. The findings also brought to light vast differences in the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding available programmes that support sustainable development within the community. These vast differences could mean that this study represents the start of a long-term process. Moreover, the study suggests some critical underlying factors that should be dealt with to close this gap: communication, awareness of available programmes, budget challenges and commitment, and identifying who should take responsibility for various aspects of development. The outcomes of this study are based on how stakeholders view community development needs and challenges by means of three cases that emerged during data analysis: case 1) community; 2). CSR project manager; 3) Top Management. Overall, this study contributes to the applied research area of; proper community engagement programmes, management engagement, employment, training and development, and education.

The Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) is a government programme targeted at unemployed individuals. Public entities at the national, provincial and municipal level implement the EPWP. The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM) is one of the entities implementing the EPWP at the local level. This study investigated the implementation of the EPWP within the CTMM with a view to understand the current implementation approach. The CTMM has been unable to achieve their EPWP annual targets since 2009. The CTMM experienced the lack of attaining targets mainly in relation to persons with disabilities (2%), and indigents (50%). Other challenges include the lack of training EPWP participants in specialized skills; the unsustainable nature of the EPWP projects; and un-approval of the draft EPWP policy. This study proposes interventions with regard to the coordination of the EPWP, improved monitoring of projects, training, indigent criteria, and approval of the EPWP policy within the CTMM.

The rise of civil society organisations in South Africa is crucial to development as it contributes to the bridging of the communication gap between civil society and local government organisations and municipalities and promotes access to resources. The contribution of civil society organisations to development has been widely acknowledged as they are involved in service delivery, advocacy, innovation and poverty reduction initiatives. In spite of the development work done by civil society organisations in developing countries, they still face challenges in promoting development as poverty, inequality and unemployment persist. This research focused on the social capital approach as a strategy for the development of local communities in South Africa. The social capital approach involves increasing social stability and enhancement of development issues. Social capital relies on the basic idea that “it is not what you know but who you know”. Social capital refers mostly to social cohesion, which makes a community more committed to better living conditions for all. People in communities have the capacity to improve the quality of their lives with the support of all sectors, civil society, the state and the market by letting the people in communities get involved in all the stages of the programmes because they know better from living in those communities. Civil society organisations can meaningfully add value to economic and social development in any third world country through their work. The government, the market and civil society can complement each other and add value to the development of the country. This study employed a qualitative research design. It used in-depth interviews, direct observation and focus-group interviews to collect data, which was later transcribed and analysed thematically. The main focus of this study was to critically evaluate the roles and strategies of civil society organisations in the development of South African communities, using Planact as a case study. The specific objectives were to: 1) To explore the role Planact plays in development in Johannesburg; 2) To evaluate how Planact uses social capital as a strategy in promoting development if at all; 3) To explore the challenges of civil society organisations, particularly that of Planact in the development process of poor communities and 4) To make possible recommendations in the light of the roles and strategies of civil societies identified in analysing Planact ‘s strategy in development process for the poor. This study found that as a civil society organisation Planact is acting as a voice for the voiceless through its advocacy programme. It contributes to policy making, good governance and accountability. In addition, Planact promotes participation and assists in education and training. Planact uses different strategies to promote development in the community, such as mentoring, promoting integrated human settlement, using technology in networking, encouraging participation, community economic development and social organisation. Furthermore, the organisation uses forums, awareness campaigns and empowerment as strategies to promote development in the community. However, the study found that the organisation faces challenges because of limited funding. The community also encounters certain challenges as they engage with the organisation, for example, lack of accountability, unresponsiveness and inaccessibility. It was noted that civil society organisations should adopt a higher priority in development planning and practice and should allow the participation of poor people in the development process.

A decisão de realizar uma fusão ou aquisição representa uma opção estratégica no contexto empresarial, e existem diferentes motivações para tal operação, entre as quais obtenção de sinergia, diversificação, poder de mercado e redução de custos. Neste contexto surge esta dissertação, que têm como objetivo analisar se existe ganho de eficiência após a concretização de um processo de fusão e aquisição (F&A). E para isso é analisado o mercado segurador português nos últimos dez anos, particularizando o caso mais recente das Seguradoras Unidas. Seguradoras Unidas é uma seguradora que resulta da fusão da Açoreana, Tranquilidade, Seguros Logo e T-vida. Para análise de eficiência é aplicado o modelo da Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA), utilizando as variáveis custos com o pessoal, ativos e produção de seguros diretos. Esta análise visa estimar o valor da eficiência através da relação entre a produção e os recursos disponíveis. Conclui-se que tanto a Tranquilidade como a Açoreana nem sempre foram eficientes nos últimos dez anos, e após a fusão em 2016 que originou as Seguradoras Unidas, tornou-se numa companhia com valores de ineficiência com base no modelo DEA, ou seja, ainda têm um longo caminho a percorrer na otimização dos recursos disponíveis.
The decision to proceed with a merger or acquisition represents a strategic option in the business context, and there are different motivations for such an operation, among which synergy, diversification, market power and cost reduction. In this context this dissertation arises, whose objective is to analyze if there is an efficiency gain after the completion of a merger and acquisition (F&A) process. And for this, the Portuguese insurance market is analyzed in the last ten years, detailing the most recent case of the Seguradoras Unidas. Seguradoras Unidas is an insurance company that results from the merger of Açoreana, Tranquilidade, Seguros Logo and T-vida. For efficiency analysis, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is applied, using the variables personnel costs, assets and production of direct insurance. This analysis aims to estimate the value of efficiency through the relationship between production and available resources. It is concluded that both Tranquilidade and Açoreana have not always been efficient in the last ten years, and after the merger in 2016 that originated the Seguradoras Unidas, it became a company with values of inefficiency based on the DEA model, that is, they still have a long way to go in optimizing available resources.

The thesis is intended to assess the contribution of the public library service to the creation of social capital to reduce poverty. However, in research studies targeting this subject, the lack of empirical research is continuously mentioned or suggestions are made that more qualitative studies could shed more insight on the creation of social capital in public libraries. The concept of social capital or rather how it is created in public libraries leads to the complexity of understanding the creation thereof in public libraries, while continuous suggestions are that more qualitative studies would give light on its creation in public libraries and also in other subject disciplines (Aguilar & Sen 2009: 425; Halpern 2005: 1; Lin 2001: 3). However, to find clarity about what social capital is, the study focuses on Pierre Bourdieu’s description of social capital. Pierre Bourdieu is known as one of the first social scientists who tried to understand the concept of social capital (Bourdieu 2005: 1). The public library from a social capital viewpoint is a trustworthy social network where people have access to resources to benefit their socio-economic development. The presence of social capital is visible in every aspect of life and for that reason it is not uncommon for social capital to have an effect on unemployment, mental health and social empowerment (Thompson 2015). Social capital is a recognisable term in Library and Information Science (LIS) literature (Stilwell 2016: 54; Strand 2016: 144; Skelly 2014: 2; Aabø, Audunson & Vårheim 2010:16; Hart 2007:22; Bhandar, Pan & Tan 2007:263). However, the idea that social capital in libraries exists may not be recognised, such as in the case of the book Bowling alone, authored by Robert Putnam (Putnam 1995:22). Public libraries fulfil the role of social capital in two ways: connecting individuals and the community with their library services and programmes and promoting the staff-patron interactions that attempt to create patron trust in the library. Feldman (2009: 5) illustrates the notion of social capital in the library as generated through library services and programmes that could contribute towards empowerment, skills development, happy families and positive economic growth (Feldman 2009:5). The study is an sequential explanatory mixed methods study. There were three data collections methods use. Questionnaires with mostly close-ended questions, interviews and official documents. The research participants were 115 library patrons and 58 library staff of the Emfuleni Local Municipality Library and Information Service. The researcher found several explanations on the creation of social capital, but none had measurable outcomes that could illustrate the societal value of public libraries, apart from one, which was to build a trusting relationship between the library, staff and patrons. Hence, through Vårheim’s (2014: 68) observation about trust and patron attendance, library programmes were identified as the measurable outcome to rationalise the importance of the public library and the value of libraries and library staff. In such a case, the societal value of libraries can be understood. Through the correct measuring instruments that were identified in this study, public libraries address the creation of social capital that makes it possible to show that public library services support lifelong learning and workforce development.

Esta dissertação pretende abordar um assunto particularmente relevante para a União Europeia (UE) e Portugal que é a mobilidade dos desempregados e dos que procuram o primeiro emprego. Com a atual crise, muitos dos problemas da UE assentam no desemprego e agudizam-se com a falta de mobilidade das populações. No caso português, a maior parte das políticas aplicadas nos últimos anos não parecem ter também preparado convenientemente os Recursos Humanos (RH) para a mobilidade. Nesse sentido, pretendo com este trabalho de investigação, assente no estudo de um universo específico ligado ao IEFP de Vila Nova de Gaia, averiguar em que medida existe predisposição à mobilidade (e quais as condicionantes existentes para esta), como alternativa ao desemprego e como forma de criar condições para uma vida melhor, a média e longo prazo, num outro local.
This dissertation aims to address a particularly relevant issue for the European Union (EU) and Portugal is that the mobility of the unemployed and those seeking their first job. With the current crisis, many of the problems in the EU are based on unemployment and grow more acute with the lack of mobility of populations. In the Portuguese case, most of the policies implemented in recent years do not seem to have also prepared conveniently Human Resources (HR) for mobility. Accordingly, I intend to work with this research, based on study of a specific universe connected to IEFP of Vila Nova de Gaia, ascertain to what extent there is a predisposition to mobility (and what constraints exist for this), as an alternative to unemployment and how order to create conditions for a better life, and the average long term at another location.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The rural nature of most parts of Mpumalanga Province poses a number of human resources development challenges to the people in the rural communities of the province. The high rate of black African people aged 20 years or older who had no schooling (32% in 1996 and 30.1% in 2001) in the province is one such a challenge. The overall unemployment rate in Mpumalanga increased from 18.6% in 1996 to 23.1% in 2001 and 26.3% in 2007 (Statistics SA, 1996; 2001 & 2007), while for black Africans in particular it increased from 20.3% in 1996 to 24.6% in 2001. Since Mpumalanga is a rural province that is populated mainly by black Africans, the conclusion may be drawn that most of the people who are affected by unemployment live in the rural communities of the province. Research was carried out to investigate the role of the University of South Africa in the development of human resources in the rural communities of Mpumalanga. The institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa were identified as the target population for the research. A questionnaire was administered to the managers of 21 sampled institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa. The colleges at the University of South Africa offer the non-formal, non-subsidised and need-driven training programmes through the institutes/bureaus which are regarded as the delivery arm of those programmes. The research found that the institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa had no significant contribution to make towards the development of human resources in the targeted communities and that most of the programmes presented were not targeting the critical developmental needs of the people in rural communities. The role and involvement of the University of South Africa and other higher education institutions in rural communities should be directed by the genuine developmental needs of people in these communities. The training providers targeting rural areas should be informed by both theoretical and practical considerations towards the provision of training intervention programmes. The identification of training and developmental needs is crucial to a successful intervention for the development of human resources in rural communities. iii The research concluded, among others, that the University of South Africa is lacking in observing the stakeholder role and the strategic partner role of a university in the development of human resources in rural communities. It is however focusing, to a certain extent, on the service provider role. Furthermore, the University of South Africa is not carrying out the service learning practice through which the university students could participate and contribute to the development of human resources in rural communities. Universities have the knowledge base, expertise, networks and, in most cases, the required resources to make a contribution to the development of human resources in rural communities. The universities should therefore commit themselves to this aspect in order to assist in the development of rural communities. The practice of social responsibility implies that universities should become involved in community development activities in the needy rural communities without a profit intent, but with a community development rationale. Many poor people from rural communities would benefit from the practice of social responsibility by universities.
AFRIKAANS OPSOMMING: Vanweë die landelike aard van die grootste deel van Mpumalanga ervaar die plattelandse bevolking in hierdie provinsie talle uitdagings met betrekking tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne. Een so ʼn uitdaging in die provinsie is die groot persentasie swart mense bo die ouderdom van 20 jaar wat geen skoolopleiding ontvang het nie (32% in 1996 en 30.1% in 2001). Die totale werkloosheidsyfer in Mpumalanga het van 18.6% in 1996 tot 23.1% in 2001 en 26.3% in 2007 gestyg (Statistics SA, 1996; 2001 & 2007), en vir swart mense in hierdie provinsie in die besonder het dit van 20.3% in 1996 tot 24.6% in 2001 toegeneem. Aangesien Mpumalanga ʼn landelike provinsie is wat hoofsaaklik deur swart mense bevolk word, kan die afleiding gemaak word dat die meeste van die mense wat deur werkloosheid geraak word in die landelike gebiede van die provinsie woon. Navorsing is gedoen om ondersoek in te stel na die rol van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika in die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in die landelike gemeenskappe van Mpumalanga. Die institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika is as die teikenpopulasie van die navorsing geïdentifiseer. Die bestuurders van 21 institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika wat as steekproef gedien het, het ʼn vraelys voltooi. Die Kolleges aan die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika bied die nie-formele, nie-gesubsidieerde en behoeftegedrewe opleidingsprogramme aan deur die institute/buro’s wat as die vertakking beskou word wat diens moet lewer ten opsigte van hierdie programme. Die navorsing het bevind dat die institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika ten tyde van die ondersoek nie in staat was om enige beduidende bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in die geteikende gemeenskappe nie en dat die meeste van die programme wat aangebied is nie op die kritieke ontwikkelingsbehoeftes van die mense in landelike gebiede gerig was nie. Daar word aanbeveel dat die rol en betrokkenheid van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika en ander hoëronderwysinstellings in landelike gemeenskappe deur die werklike ontwikkelingsbehoeftes van die mense in hierdie gemeenskappe gerig word. v Voornemende verskaffers van opleiding in landelike gebiede behoort beide teoretiese en praktiese oorwegings in ag te neem wanneer hulle intervensieprogramme vir opleiding beplan en ontwerp. Die identifisering van opleidings- en ontwikkelingsbehoeftes is van kritieke belang in die daarstelling van ʼn suksesvolle intervensie vir die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gebiede. Op grond van die navorsing is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat UNISA nie sy belanghebberrol en sy rol as strategiese vennoot as universiteit in die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe nakom nie. Daar word wel in ʼn mate aan die eise van die diensverskafferrol voldoen. Voorts kom die toepassing van diensleer, waardeur studente deel kan word van en bydra tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe, nie tot sy reg nie. Universiteite beskik oor die kennisbasis, kundigheid, netwerke en, in die meeste gevalle, oor die nodige bronne om ’n bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe. Universiteite behoort hulle dus te verbind tot hierdie aspek van hulle sosiale verantwoordelikheid ten einde ’n bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van landelike gemeenskappe. Die toepassing van sosiale verantwoordelikheid impliseer dat universiteite, sonder winsmotief, betrokke behoort te raak by gemeenskapsontwikkelingsaktiwiteite in die arm, landelike gemeenskappe. Baie arm mense in landelike gemeenskappe sal deur die toepassing van sodanige sosiale verantwoordelikheid deur universiteite baat vind.

The thesis is divided into the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part consists of three chapters, the first is devoted to familiarization with the problems of homelessness. I deal with the social aspects of this phenomenon, such as social exclusion and associated problems of social inclusion in the second chapter. The final chapter discusses the possibilities of assistance directed at homeless people. The practical part includes qualitative research where I try by means of ten case studies to bring the fate of homeless people who seek the services of institutions, where they can find qualified help in solving a wide range of problems that may be the cause of their present situation. By analyzing data, I try to figure out what is behind the possible success or failure of such persons in the pursuit of social inclusion.
