Résumé :

Little information is available for cadmium (Cd) sorption/desorption behaviour in soils with relatively variable CaCO3 content. The objectives of this study were to: (i) parameterise the sorption and desorption of Cd and the hysteretic behaviour of Cd sorbed to soils with varying CaCO3 content; and (ii) correlate sorption, desorption, and retention parameters with physicochemical characteristics of the soils. Twenty soil samples of different physico-chemical properties were taken from agricultural regions of Western Azerbijan province, Iran. A batch equilibrium experiment was conducted to construct sorption/desorption curves of Cd. The linear, Langmuir, and Freundlich isotherm equations were fitted to the experimental data of Cd sorption and retention, using either linear regression procedure or nonlinear least square optimisation (LSO). Both the Freundlich and Langmuir approaches described the Cd sorption and retention data well. A strong and irreversible binding of Cd in the soils was recorded, using a desorption approach. In the case of Cd sorption, a significant positive correlation (r = 0.38, P ≤ 0.05) was found between the Freundlich constant (Kf) and active CaCO3 equivalent (ACCE). The Freundlich n was positively correlated with cation exchange capacity (r = 0.49, P ≤ 0.05) and clay (r = 0.61, P ≤ 0.01) and negatively with ACCE (r = –0.60, P ≤ 0.01). The soil partition coefficient (KSD) showed a positive correlation with ACCE. The sorption maxima (b) were much less than the cation exchange capacity of soils. However, the relatively high pH (7.0–8.0) of the experimental soils and presence of relatively high values of free and active carbonate in the soils, along with the large sorption capacity of the soils, suggest the possibility of solid-phase precipitation as octavite (CdCO3). Parameter b, when fitted through LSO, showed a negative correlation with clay (r = –0.51, P ≤ 0.05) and a positive correlation with ACCE (r = 0.63, P ≤ 0.01). Langmuir K (Kl) showed a positive correlation with clay (r = 0.52, P ≤ 0.05) and a negative relationship with pH (r = –0.58, P ≤ 0.05) and ACCE (r = –0.65, P ≤ 0.01). Sorption of Cd showed a positive correlation (r ≥ 0.54, P ≤ 0.05) and its desorption a high negative correlation (r ≤ –0.61, P ≤ 0.05), with ACCE. It can be concluded that the ACCE is the important soil property controlling the sorption and retention of Cd in the studied soils.

Résumé :

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review how historical research data are managed and mined today. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology builds on observations over the last decade. Findings – Reading speed is a factor in managing the quantity of text in historical research. Twenty years ago historical research involved visits to physical libraries and archives, but today much of the information is online. The granularity of reading has changed over recent decades and recognizing this change is an important factor in improving acce. Practical implications – Computer-based humanities text mining could be simpler if publishers and libraries would manage the data in ways that facilitate the process. Some aspects still need development, including better context awareness, either by writing context awareness into programs or by encoding it in the text. Social implications – Future researchers who want to make use of text mining and distant reading techniques will need more thorough technical training than they get today. Originality/value – There is relatively little discussion of text mining and distant reading in the LIS literature.

Esto lleva implícita la necesidad de desarrollar nuevas competencias cognitivas en el usuario. Por ello, es necesario realizar esfuerzos para comprender y sistematizar las nuevas formas de lenguaje asociadas a las nuevas tecnologías, como así también intentar su abordaje semiológico.

Mammalian primary sex is determined by the presence or absence of the Y chromosome. However, little is known about the molecular processes through which the Y chromosome exerts its action. We applied recombinant DNA techniques to isolate mouse Y chromosomal fragments and described previously a clone designated as AC11 (Y. Nishioka and E. Lamothe. 1986. Genetics, 113: 417–432). To obtain information on DNA sequences that flank AC11, we screened a mouse genomic library for the presence of AC11-related sequences and isolated over 50 positive clones. In this report we describe clones ACC2 and ACC3, both of which contain highly repetitive elements. Using a male-specific portion of these clones, we compared DNA's isolated from mice (Mus musculus, M. hortulanus, M. spretus, M. cookii, M. pahari, and M. platythrix), rat, hamster, and guinea pig and obtained results that agree with the phylogenetic relationships deduced from morphological and biochemical studies. The male-specific accumulation of the related sequences was found only in M. musculus, M. hortulanus, and M. spretus. Key words: mouse, Y chromosome, repetitive sequence, genome evolution.

Résumé :

In order to improve the performance of the automotive active safety system, the author proposes a distributed embedded ACCS hardware loop simulation system. The automotive adaptive cruise control system (ACCS) is a completely distributed embedded control system. The author adopts the method of hardware loop simulation, an ARM-based automotive ACCS simulation platform is designed, and the hardware structure and software design of the platform are introduced. The simulation results show that the performance of single-node and double-node responses to step change is basically the same. There is a network in the two-node control loop, the carrying capacity and communication bandwidth of the network are limited, which will inevitably cause information collision and retransmission, which will inevitably cause a delay in the information transmission process, with a delay of about 4.5 seconds. The system opens up the design idea of ACCS and also lays a foundation for future research in related directions, which has a certain enlightenment effect.

ABSTRACT In this study, we examine whether investors' actions to acquire accounting information are predictive of future firm performance because these actions partially reveal investors' private expectations of this performance. Using a database of EDGAR downloads, we find some evidence that information acquisition of accounting reports by EDGAR users is, on average, predictive of future firm performance. We then determine the identity of the EDGAR user and examine whether different users' private expectations will be relatively more predictive of subsequent performance. We find that the information acquisition activities of more sophisticated institutional users (e.g., hedge funds, investment banks) are more strongly associated with future performance than are those of less sophisticated retail users. Finally, we find that information acquisition by sophisticated institutions is a leading indicator of their equity holdings. In summary, this study provides evidence of predictive information embedded in sophisticated investors' actions to acquire accounting information.

Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a widely used and accepted indicator for measuring journal influence in academia, but it has certain limitations. Article Citation Contribution Indicator (ACCI) is defined and introduced in bibliometrics analysis. The ACCI, a new basic indicator, was adopted to analyze the papers published between 2019 and 2020 in Energy & Environment, papers with ACCI>0 and with ACCI<0 were classified into two groups. This paper employed the keyword co-occurrence technology to discover the commonalities of citation positive and citation negative papers. Citation positive papers made relatively a larger contribution to the JIF and might contain important scientific information, subsequent papers may learn from the research directions of these papers, while the citation negative papers failed to improve the performance of the journal in terms of JIF. The research showed that ACCI is an academic tool that can be used to guide scientific directions; the work flow can be used for other journal analysis. The academic journal editorial board can use it to identify potential high influence authors

Lo scopo principale dei motori di ricerca, che supportano il compito di information retrieval, è quello di fornire agli utenti un metodo facile per trovare informazioni sul Web. Nonostante i loro vantaggi, i motori di ricerca hanno ancora numerosi limiti. Sono state realizzate diverse opere per migliorare i sistemi di accesso alle informazioni e offrire un'esperienza di utilizzo migliore in settori diversi, come distribuite e contestuali information retrieval, link analysis e exploratory search. Questa tesi si occupa di Web Information Foraging, un paradigma di information access più recente che mira a scoprire i percorsi che portano a informazioni rilevanti sul Web. L'obiettivo principale della ricerca intrapresa durante il Ph.D. è stato quello di progettare e implementare sistemi efficaci ed efficienti di Information Foraging basati sulla tecnologia multi-agent. A questo scopo, abbiamo studiato information foraging in diversi domini, tra cui salute, pubblicazioni scientifiche e social media. Per affrontare questo problema, abbiamo proposto un'architettura modulare con due fasi importanti per il sistema di Information Foraging. La prima fase è un processo di apprendimento che mira a localizzare le pagine Web più rilevanti che potrebbero interessare l'utente secondo i propri interessi. Questo può essere eseguito su un'istanza fissa del Web. La seconda fase tiene conto dell'apertura e della dinamicità del Web e consiste in un apprendimento incrementale partendo dai risultati della prima fase e ricondizionando i risultati tenendo conto delle modifiche apportate sul Web. L'intero sistema offre uno strumento per aiutare gli utenti a accedere facilmente alle informazioni online. Lo sviluppo del sistema ha attraversato tre importanti passaggi in cui sono stati utilizzati diversi concetti e tecnologie per ottenere efficacia ed efficienza e anche rendere il sistema in grado di operare in diversi ambienti. Innanzitutto, abbiamo proposto un approccio basato sulla Swarm Intelligence per simulare il processo di foraggicazione come descritto nella Information Foraging Theory. Abbiamo eseguito la nostra proposta utilizzando Bee Swarm Optimization (BSO) per realizzare un processo automatico di information foraging fondato sul comportamento del foraggicazione delle informazioni dell'uomo. Conoscendo che BSO è un approccio di swarm intelligence che coinvolge agenti reattivi e che il concetto di Information Foraging si basa sulla natura, abbiamo pensato che questo potrebbe essere uno dei modi più appropriati per affrontare il problema del Web Information Foraging. Per convalidare la nostra proposta, sono stati condotti esperimenti su MedlinePlus, un sito dedicato al dominio medico e che contiene informazioni su oltre 1000 malattie e condizioni sanitarie. I risultati sono stati promettenti e hanno dimostrato la capacità di Information Foraging di accedere alle informazioni pertinenti sul Web in base agli interessi di un utente. The main purpose of search engines, which support the task of Information Retrieval, is to provide the users with an easy method to find information on the Web. Despite their advantages, Web search engines still have numerous limitations. Several works have been done to enhance information access systems and offer a better user experience in different fields such as distributed and contextual information retrieval, link analysis and exploratory search. This thesis deals with Web Information Foraging, which is a recent information access paradigm that aims at discovering paths leading to relevant information on the Web. The principal goal of the research undertaken during the Ph.D. has been to design and implement effective and efficient Information Foraging systems based on multi-agent technology. For this purpose, we investigated Information Foraging in different domains including health, scientific publications and social media. To address this issue, we proposed a modular architecture with two important phases for the Information Foraging system to be developed. The first phase is a learning process, which aims to locate the most relevant Web pages that might interest the user according to his/her interests. This can be performed on a fixed instance of the Web. The second phase takes into account the openness and dynamicity of the Web and it consists of an incremental learning starting from the results of the first phase and reshaping the outcomes taking into account the changes that occur on the Web. The whole system offers a tool to help users access information online easily. The development of the system went through three important steps, where different concepts and technologies were used in order to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency and also to make the system able to operate on various environments.

Genom att fusionera (sammanföra) data från olika sensorer kan ett resultat uppnås som ger mer än de enskilda sensorerna var för sig. Här utreds vilka sensorer och sensorfusionsmetoder som kan vara aktuella att använda för Scanias adaptiva farthållare (ACC). Den adaptiva farthållaren anpassar det egna fordonets hastighet inte bara till en förinställd hastighet utan även till framförvarande fordons hastighet. Scanias ACC-system använder idag en radar för måldetektering.Det finns ett antal algoritmer och arkitekturer som passar för sensorfusionssystem beroende på nivån hos sensordatan och användningsområdet. Minstakvadratmetoder kan användas då data ska matchas mot en fysisk modell, ofta med lågnivådata. När tillgänglig data är på den nivån att den används direkt för att fatta beslut kan sannolikhetsmetoder användas. Intelligent fusion består av kognitiva modeller som avser härma den mänskliga beslutsprocessen. Till detta passar data på hög nivå.Två lösningar, för två olika sensoruppsättningar, har tagits fram. Båda lösningarna är uppbyggda av bayesiska nätverk. Det första nätverket fusionerar data från den befintliga radarenheten med data från en kamera som detekterar vägmarkeringar. Resultaten visar att filbyten kan upptäckas tidigare i och med fusionen. Det andra nätverket använder sig av två radarenheter, den ursprungliga samt en likadan enhet till, vilket resulterar i ett bredare synfält. Nätverket avgör vilka mål hos respektive radar som kan anses vara samma matchade mål. Informationen kan användas för att öka redundansen i systemet samt för att upptäcka mål tidigare än förut. By fusing data from different sensors a result can be achieved that is worth more than the data from each sensor by itself. Which sensors and sensor fusion methods that could be used in Scania's adaptive cruise control system (ACC) is investigated. The ACC system adapts the vehicle's speed not only to a driver decided set speed but also to the speed of preceding vehicles. Scania's ACC system uses a radar for target detection.There exists a number of algorithms and architectures fit for use in sensor fusion systems. Which one to use depends on the level of the data to be fused and on the field of application. Least square methods are used when matching data to a physical model, data to be used is often at a low level. When working with data at decision level, probability methods are favored. Another example is intelligent fusion, cognitive methods intending to mimic the human decision process. Suitable data is data at a high level.Two solutions, for two different sensor sets, are proposed. Both solutions are made out of Bayesian networks. The first one fuses data from the existing radar unit with data from a camera which detects lane markings. The results show that lane changes can be detected earlier thanks to the fusion. The second network uses two radar sensors of the same kind as the first, resulting in a wider field of view. The network decides which ones of each radars targets that are the same matching targets. This information could be used to increase the redundancy of the system and to detect targets earlier.

Le Web crée chaque jour une quantité importante de connaissances culturelles et intellectuelles. Ses informations sont de nature éphémère car elles sont constamment remplacées, parfois sans aucunenotification. C’est pour cette raison que l’archivage du web est devenue une nécessité culturelle afinde préserver la connaissance pour les prochaines générations. Son succès sera cependant mesuré parses modes d’accès, comme ceux fournis jusqu’ici par le web. Notre recherche situe dans le contexte del’accès aux archives web, et étudie les différents problèmes d’accès qui y sont liés. Ces problèmes sontgroupés en deux thèmes principaux : Méthodes d’accès et Optimisation des accès. Pour les méthodesd’accès, nous proposons la base d’un langage de requête ayant par objectif de de mieux satisfaire lesbesoins d’information des utilisateurs. Une nouvelle méthode de navigation est ensuite introduite, quiprend en compte la cohérence des pages. Pour l’optimisation de l’accès, nous proposons un algorithmede détection de changement pour comprendre et quantifier ce qui s’est passé (et a donc changé) entredeux versions d’une même page Web. Nous étudions aussi le comportement des différentes méthodesd’élagage d’index statiques avec des requêtes temporelles. En outre, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode d’élagage index statiques basée sur la diversification et nous montrons son application aux collections temporelles et un gain supstanciel de performance par rapport aux autres approaches An important amount of the world’s cultural and intellectual knowledge is being created on the webeveryday. However, the web has en ephemeral nature e. G. New information replaces older informationconstantly without any notification, leaving a significant gap in our knowledge. That’s why archivingthe web has become a cultural necessity to preserve the knowledge for the next generations. However,the success of any web archive will be measured by the means of access it provides; as it is the casetoday on the real web. Our research is placed in the context of access to web archives and studiesdifferent research problems related to this issue. These research problems are grouped into two maintopics: Access Methods and Optimization of Access. For access methods, we first propose a conceptualmodel, as well as operators to manipulate them, as the basis of a query language for web archives tobetter satisfy user information needs. Next, a new navigation method for web archives that takes thecoherence of pages into account is introduced. In the context of access optimization, we propose achange detection algorithm to understand and to quantify what happened (and thus changed) betweentwo versions of a web page. Then, we study the behavior of different static index pruning methodswith temporal queries before proposing a new diversification-based static index pruning method andshowing its application to temporal collections and a substantial gain in performance

Introdução - O baixo peso ao nascer (BPN) é considerado um dos mais importantes problemas de saúde pública em todo o mundo, contribuindo, substancialmente, para a morbi-mortalidade infantil. Objetivos Estimar a proporção de baixo peso ao nascer e identificar a presença de associações entre o baixo peso ao nascer e fatores relacionados à gestação, ao parto, ao recém-nascido e a características sócio-demográficas maternas. Métodos Estudo transversal onde se analisaram 3220 declarações de nascidos vivos referentes aos partos ocorridos no município de Cruzeiro do Sul, Estado do Acre, no período de 2006 e 2007, de mães residentes nesta localidade. Na análise, utilizou-se regressão linear generalizada família Poisson ligação logarítmica com variância robusta, simples e múltipla. Adotou-se nível de significância de 0,10. Resultados - A proporção de baixo peso ao nascer foi 9,13%. Os fatores associados ao baixo peso ao nascer foram: prematuridade; nascimento no domicílio; sexo feminino; idades maternas entre 12 e 13 anos, 16 e 17 anos, 18 e 19 anos, 35 e mais anos; realização de 1 a 3 consultas de pré-natal, crianças não brancas, mães sem ocupação fora do lar e mães solteiras. Conclusão São poucos (ou nenhum) os fatores suscetíveis de mudança ou controle com ações isoladas de saúde. Estratégias de ampla abrangência são necessárias para a redução da proporção de BPN em Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre e, uma vez ocorrido baixo peso ao nascer, atenção especial deve ser proporcionada à criança. Introduction - The low birth weight (LBW) is considered one of the most important public health problems around the world, contributing substantially to infantile morbidity and mortality. Objectives - To estimate the proportion of low birth weight and identify the presence of associations between low birth weight and factors related to pregnancy, chilbirth, newborn baby and maternal socio-demographic characteristics. Methods - Cross-sectional study which examined 3220 statements of births relating to births occurring in the city of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, in the period 2006 to 2007, of resident mothers in this locality. In the analysis, was used linear regression generalized with Poisson family logarithmic linking robust variance, simple and multiple. It was used a significance level of 0,10. Results - The proportion of low birth weight was 9,13%. Factors associated with low birth weight were: prematurity, birth at home, female, maternal age between 12 and 13 years, 16 and 17 years, 18 and 19 years, more than 34 years, achieving 1-3 pre-natal consultations, non-white children, mothers with no occupation outside home and single mothers. Conclusion- Few (or none) the factors susceptible to change or control with isolated actions health. Wide variety of strategies are needed to reduce the proportion of LBW in the city of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, and once occurred low birth weight, attention should be given to the child.

En esta investigación se encontró un problema de comunicación visual en el restaurante Ache, donde se identificó la falta de elementos gráficos que logre identificar al restaurante de cocina nikkei a partir de su dimensión cultural. Se identificó que este problema de comunicación visual solo se podía resolver mediante el diseño gráfico, ya que pertenece precisamente al área identitaria. Además, este proyecto muestra una justificación cultural y práctica donde se identificarán aspectos esenciales para el replanteamiento de la identidad del restaurante para que logre transmitir su esencia como marca al consumidor.También, se realizó una encuesta a un grupo de personas que consumen comida nikkei y se entrevistó a dos expertos que han creado y rediseñado proyectos de identidad visual de restaurantes nikkeis y otros rubros de comida. Adicionalmente, se utilizó la metodología de trabajo del doble diamante para realizar el proceso de elaboración de la gráfica visual.Los principales resultados que se pudo obtener mediante la propuesta de diseño fueron positivos, ya que los usuarios consideraron que la nueva gráfica sí reflejaba el rubro de comida que ofrecían. Igualmente, el logo lo relacionaban con la cultura nikkei, la carta lo consideraban claro y directo, las imágenes ayudaban a entender el producto a consumir y el empaque les parecía innovador y diferente generando una experiencia única. In this research, a visual communication problem was found in the Ache restaurant, where the lack of graphic elements that could identify the Nikkei cuisine restaurant from its cultural dimension was identified. It was identified that this visual communication problem could only be solved through graphic design, since it belongs precisely to the identity area. In addition, this project shows a cultural and practical justification where essential aspects will be identified for the rethinking of the identity of the restaurant so that it can transmit its essence as a brand to the consumer.Also, a survey was made to a group of people who consume Nikkei food and two experts who have created and redesigned visual identity projects for Nikkei restaurants and other food items were interviewed. Additionally, the double diamond methodology was used to carry out the process of elaboration of the visual graphics.The main results obtained through the design proposal were positive, since the users considered that the new graphics did reflect the food offered. A bit under 10 years: That’s what it took engineers and project managers to bring some human beings to the Moon in the 60’s. That’s also the time we have to act and rebuild a smart and sustainable human society for the world, and one good indicator for this is reaching the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by the year 2030. The Sulitest’s matrix gives an excellent structure to explain the current situation and share information in a structured and helpful way; a way in which all can find an answer to this key question: “What can YOU do NOW to rebuild a smart and sustainable society for the world?” The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, also known as The Natural Step Framework, is the best approach I’ve found to help create needed systemic and strategic changes. Examples from the business or scientific areas can shed light on how to achieve this incredibly needed change to discuss the role of technology, and to explore how systems change and can be transformed. In this paper, I’ll share some of the experience and learnings I’ve gained over the last 20 years, trying to acce lerate change towards sustainability. I’ll share the fact that it’s fun and motivating, as well as an incredible opportunity for all, even if it’s not necessarily always easy like most good things which do require efforts to reach. And for all the ones who won’t be able to read further: If not now, when? If not here, where? If not you and I, who?

Managers are challenged with the impact of problematic plants, including exotic, invasive, and pest plant species. Information on the cover and frequency of these plant species is essential for developing risk-based approaches to managing them. Based on surveys conducted in 2006, 2013, 2016, and 2020, Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network staff and contractors identified a cumulative total of 53 potentially problematic plant species in Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. Of the 40 species found in 2020, we characterized 9 as very low frequency, 13 as low frequency, 9 as medium frequency, and 9 as high frequency. Of these 40, midpoint cover estimates of 1 low-frequency, 4 medium-frequency, and 8 high-frequency species exceeded the 10-acre threshold. The 10-acre threshold represents a limit beyond which eradication of a problematic plant species is likely not possible. Because of the number, extent, and cover of problematic plants in the park and the small park size, control efforts should focus on treating high priority species across the entire park. High priority species may include plant species capable of rapid spread, species at low population levels, and species that can be effectively controlled.

Of these 35 species, midpoint cover estimates of 4 medium frequency and all 4 high frequency species exceeded the 10-acre threshold. The 10-acre threshold represents a limit beyond which eradication of a problematic plant species is likely not possible. Clearing of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) continues to be evident in our observations, and sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) appears to have increased as clearing progressed. The rapid increase in Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) appears to be parkwide. Because of the number, extent, and cover of problematic plants in the park, control efforts should focus on early detection treatments and strategic treatment of high priority, widespread species to protect features of the park’s natural and cultural landscapes. High priority species may include plant species capable of rapid spread, species at low population levels, and species that can be effectively controlled.

Of the 23 species found in 2019, we characterized 9 as very low frequency, 7 as low frequency, 5 as medium frequency, and 2 as high frequency. Cover of all species was low with a single species slightly exceeding a 1-acre threshold based on a midpoint estimate. Efforts to control the woody invasive black locust, Chinese privet, and hardy orange appear to have successfully reduced the cover of these plants across the Memorial Unit. Japanese stiltgrass may have been increasing as recently as 2015, but a combination of recent flooding and control efforts may have stemmed the spread of this invasive grass. Oxon Run Parkway (OXRN) is a 51-hectare (126-acre) natural area within Washington, D.C. administered by the National Park Service under National Capital Parks East (NACE). The original plan called for a road, slated to follow Oxon Run stream, but this never came to fruition; despite this, the moniker stuck. The majority of the original Oxon Run Parkway is managed by the District of Columbia. The section of Oxon Run Parkway under NPS jurisdiction contains wetlands and forests, as well as the only McAteean magnolia bogs still remaining in the District. The lower Cretaceous Potomac Group, known as one of the few dinosaur-bearing rock units on the east coast of North America, crops out within Oxon Run. One of the most prevalent fossil-bearing resources are the siderite, or “bog iron” sandstone slabs that sometimes preserve the footprints or trackways of various vertebrates, including dinosaurs. Such trackways have been reported from Potomac Group outcrops throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Maryland and Virginia. In 2019, National Capital Parks-East took possession of such a track, referred to a dinosaur, collected by paleontologist Dr. Peter Kranz. This report was compiled after a paleontological survey of Oxon Run Parkway and is intended as a supplement to the National Capital Parks East Paleontological Resource Inventory (Nelson et al. 2019). This report contains information on the history of Oxon Run Parkway and its geology, as well as discussion of the fossil track.

In 2008 and 2015, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage produced vegetation maps for Richmond National Battlefield Park, following the protocols of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) – National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Program. The original 2008 report was part of a regional project to map and classify the vegetation in seven national parks in Virginia. The 2015 report was an addendum to the original report and mapped the vegetation in newly acquired parcels. Since 2015, the park has acquired an additional 820 acres of land within 12 individual parcels, including the 650 acre North Anna unit. This report is an addendum to the 2008 and 2015 reports and documents the mapping of vegetation and other land-use classes for the 12 new land parcels at Richmond National Battlefield Park, with an updated vegetation map for the entire park. The updated map and associated data provide information on the sensitivity and ecological integrity of habitats and can help prioritize areas for protection. The vegetation map of the new land parcels includes eighteen map classes, representing 14 associations from the United States National Vegetation Classification, one nonstandard, park-specific class, and three Anderson Level II land-use categories. The vegetation classification and map classes are consistent with the original 2008 report. Vegetation-map classes for the new land parcels were identified through field reconnaissance, data collection, and aerial photo interpretation. Aerial photography from 2017 served as the base map for mapping the 12 new parcels, and field sampling was conducted in the summer of 2020. Three new map classes for the Park were encountered and described during the study, all within the North Anna park unit. These map classes are Coastal Plain / Outer Piedmont Basic Mesic Forest, Northern Coastal Plain / Piedmont Oak – Beech / Heath Forest, and Southern Piedmont / Inner Coastal Plain Floodplain Terrace Forest. The examples of Coastal Plain / Outer Piedmont Basic Mesic Forest and Southern Piedmont / Inner Coastal Plain Floodplain Terrace Forest at North Anna meet the criteria of size, condition, and landscape context to be considered a Natural Heritage exemplary natural community occurrence and should be targeted for protection and management as needed. New local and global descriptions for the three map classes are included as part of this report. Refinements were made to the vegetation field key to include the new map classes. The updated field key is part of this report. An updated table listing the number of polygons and total hectares for each of the 28 vegetation- map classes over the entire park is also included in the report. A GIS coverage containing a vegetation map for the entire park with updated Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata was completed for this project. The attribute table field names are the same as the 2008 and 2015 products, with the exception of an additional field indicating the year each polygon was last edited.

However, application of a pre-storage temperature conditioning (CD) treatment at 16°C for 7 d or of a hot water brushing (HWB) treatment at 60°C for 20 sec remarkably enhances chilling tolerance and reduces the development of chilling injuries (CI) upon storage at 5°C. In the current research, we proposed to identify and characterize grapefruit genes that are induced by CD, and may contribute to the acquisition of fruit chilling tolerance, by two different molecular approaches: cDNA array analysis and PCR cDNA subtraction. In addition, following the recent development and commercialization of the new Affymetrix Citrus Genome Array, we further performed genome-wide transcript profiling analysis following exposure to CD and chilling treatments. To conduct the cDNA array analysis, we constructed cDNA libraries from the peel tissue of CD- and HWB-treated grapefruit, and performed an EST sequencing project including sequencing of 3,456 cDNAs from each library. Based on the obtained sequence information, we chose 70 stress-responsive and chilling-related genes and spotted them on nylon membranes. Following hybridization the constructed cDNA arrays with RNA probes from control and CD-treated fruit and detailed confirmations by RT-PCR analysis, we found that six genes: lipid-transfer protein, metallothionein-like protein, catalase, GTP-binding protein, Lea5, and stress-responsive zinc finger protein, showed higher transcript levels in flavedo of conditioned than in non-conditioned fruit stored at 5 ᵒC. The transcript levels of another four genes: galactinol synthase, ACC oxidase, temperature-induced lipocalin, and chilling-inducible oxygenase, increased only in control untreated fruit but not in chilling-tolerant CD-treated fruit. By PCR cDNA subtraction analysis we identified 17 new chilling-responsive and HWB- and CD-induced genes. Overall, characterization of the expression patterns of these genes as well as of 11 more stress-related genes by RNA gel blot hybridizations revealed that the HWB treatment activated mainly the expression of stress-related genes(HSP19-I, HSP19-II, dehydrin, universal stress protein, EIN2, 1,3;4-β-D-glucanase, and SOD), whereas the CD treatment activated mainly the expression of lipid modification enzymes, including fatty acid disaturase2 (FAD2) and lipid transfer protein (LTP). Genome wide transcriptional profiling analysis using the newly developed Affymetrix Citrus GeneChip® microarray (including 30,171 citrus probe sets) revealed the identification of three different chilling-related regulons: 1,345 probe sets were significantly affected by chilling in both control and CD-treated fruits (chilling-response regulon), 509 probe sets were unique to the CD-treated fruits (chilling tolerance regulon), and 417 probe sets were unique to the chilling-sensitive control fruits (chilling stress regulon). Overall, exposure to chilling led to expression governed arrest of general cellular metabolic activity, including concretive down-regulation of cell wall, pathogen defense, photosynthesis, respiration, and protein, nucleic acid and secondary metabolism. On the other hand, chilling enhanced various adaptation processes, such as changes in the expression levels of transcripts related to membranes, lipid, sterol and carbohydrate metabolism, stress stimuli, hormone biosynthesis, and modifications in DNA binding and transcription factors.
