As Franklin Hugh Adler's ambitious and detailed account relates the Lega (LIT) begat first a Federazione Industriali Piemontesi (1908) and then the Confederazione Italiana dell'Industria (CIDI) in 1910 which was relaunched as the Confederazione generale dell'industria Italiana (Confindustria) in 1919. All of these organizations came under the effective direction of Gino Olivetti, the first secretary of the Lega who emerges from Adler's analysis as the principal theorist of a liberalproductionist ideology that the author regards as the central value system of the Italian industrial bourgeoisie. The slimmer volumes (in both scope and size) of Giuseppe Berta and Giorgio Fiocca diverge from Adler's account in stressing the discontinuities in the process of association which are attributed to the triumph of one industrial faction over another, and the changes in direction consequent upon this. By presenting these organizations within the broader context of entrepreneurial and associational activity, their accounts also call into question the extent to which the positions of Confindustria can be assumed to be representative of Italian industrialists as a whole.

Résumé :
In the wake of deindustrialisation, Italy too has been affected by the significant phenomenon of the closure of industrial plants and facilities, which in some ways has marked the end of an era. Physical evidence of past industrial activity was at first considered to be an obstacle to the development of areas and therefore to be removed. It was only at the end of the 80s of the last century that a more widespread interest in the protection of old factories was aroused. Three themes will be examined in the course of this article. First of all, an attempt will be made to identify the time frame of reference of the Italian industrial heritage, so as not to exclude past experiences of productive organization that anticipated the modern factory system. The second theme is the different methodologies of recovery and conversion of old work spaces into spaces for new activities. The characteristics of the industrial heritage require different methods of intervention, among which exemplary restoration is only one of the possible solutions. More often it is the task of the project to find the right balance between conservation and transformation in the rehabilitation of industrial buildings. The third theme concerns the role of industrial heritage in urban regeneration programmes. In order to be fully appreciated, this role requires a higher level of vision, a focus not on individual interventions but on the benefits that an entire district or city can gain from an integrated rehabilitation of its industrial heritage.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the developments which have characterized Italy’s industrial relations from post-war Fordism to neo-liberal hegemony and recent crisis, with a particular focus on the major changes occurred in the twenty-first century, especially those concerning concertative (tripartite) policy making between the government, the employers’ organizations and the trade unions. Design/methodology/approach This study is a conceptual paper which analysis of main development trends. Findings Italy’s industrial relations in the twenty-first century are characterized by ambivalent features which are the heritage of the past. These are summarized as follows: “collective autonomy” as a classical source of strength for trade unions and employers’ organization, on the one hand. On the other hand, a low level of legislative regulation and weak institutionalization, accompanied by little engagement in a generalized “participative-collaborative” model. Due to the instability in the socio-political setting in the twenty-first century, unions and employers encounter growing difficulties to affirm their common points of view and to build up stable institutions that could support cooperation between them. The result is a clear reversal of the assumptions that had formed the classical backdrop of the paradigm of Italy’s “political exchange.” This paradigm has long influenced the way in which the relationships between employers, trade unions and the state were conceived, especially during 1990s and, to some extent, during 2000s, that is the development of concertative (tripartite) policy making. However, since the end of 2000s, and particularly from 2010s onwards national governments have stated their intention to act independently of the choices made by the unions (and partially the employers). The outcome is the eclipse of concertation. The paper explores how the relationships among the main institutional actors such as the trade unions (and among the unions themselves), the employers, and the state and how politics have evolved, within a dynamic socio-political and economic context. These are the essential factors needed to understand Italy’s industrial relations in the twenty-first century. Originality/value It shows that understanding the relationship among the main institutional actors such as the trade unions (and among the unions themselves), the employers and the state and their politics is essential to understand the change occurred in contemporary Italy’s industrial relations.

Résumé :
The art of managing an emergency situation at the workplace through effective planning and quick action refers to crisis management. An unstable condition which leads to major disturbances at the workplace must be controlled immediately for effective functioning of the organization. During the past few years, the textile and apparel industry in Italy has been concentrating on developing its end-product segment, which includes apparels. Unlike earlier, when the Italian textile industry ensured that its focus on basic textile products didn't suffer following promotion of end product segment, things have changed now. One minor disadvantage that the industry has suffered following this shift in industrial approach is that the cotton yarn and fabric production has declined persistently in last few years. The sector which reported the lowest revenue in 2019 was the manufacturing of cordage, ropes and twines with a value of about 228 million euros. The fractious cultural movements that induce successive crisis are confronted by organizations that crisis their property, and therefore their on-going prospects. These have lately presented themselves in a variety of failures that range from financial failure, epidemics, and other natural calamities; violent actions among staffs and from terrorist factions as well. From the literature there is no doubt that apparel and textile industries in Italy have to cope with stress and job satisfaction of their employees with these two elements one affecting the other and if both function well could lead to positive results for employees’ work and organization. The study concludes that crises in the apparel and textile industry in Italy are often caused by the complexity of systems and organizations but also from incorrect or disputed decisions as well as from the interaction between technological systems and people who are trying to manage them, which significantly impacts on staff work quality. Résumé :
The paper is a contribution to the debate about the theoretical aspects, the structure, and the competitiveness of Italian industrial districts. The work first examines the theoretical strand on industrial districts ranging from Marshall to Becattini, and focusing on the contemporary distrettualism of Giacomo Becattini, where the district is essentially a socio-economic construct and an important localized productive system. Furthermore, the paper offers an updated picture of the Italian industrial districts as they are represented in the 2011 Census by the National Statistics Institute. Finally, this study underlines the resilient competitive capacity of this typical form of industrial organization. Then, through empirical literature, it analyzes the Italian district companies, and their performance and success in foreign markets, especially with regard to “Made in Italy” products.

Résumé :
In the last years, several impacts took place in the organization of the banking sector especially pushed also by institutional context. One specific case is the role of the MiFID II Directive in the adoption of new technologies, work organization models, and implementation of reskilling processes. The article looks at the Italian context after the introduction of the Directive together with the turbulent environment from the economic, socio-cultural and technological point of view of the years after the recession. And in particular focuses on how industrial relations, through collective agreements at the national and especially at the firm level helped the governance of these challenges. To do this the paper wants to analyze this phenomenon starting from a deepening of impacts of MiFID II on work or-ganization and through a focus on the actual scenario of industrial relations in the sector in Italy before showing two different case studies, Unicredit and Banca Eti-ca, through which analyze how social partners through collective agreements acted after MiFID II. It emerges how the institutional context of industrial relations in the sector helped in enforcing collective agreements at the company level and at the same time the presence of bilateral institutions helped in reducing redundancies due to restructuring processes.

Unlike the outsourcing trend stated during the last decades in the textile-apparel-leather sector, luxury-fashion firms show in increasing degree of vertical integration. This thesis’ aim is to reveal the objectives and effects of this strategic move using the concepts and methods of industrial economics. The specific behavior of the luxury industry lead us to choose a microeconomic approach, based on quantitative and qualitative data gather on 21 luxury companies, and empirical statistical tests carried out on 18 firms. Results show that the main justification for a greater level of integration is the search for efficiency and rent-seeking strategies. This strategy led to higher barriers to entry on the luxury market and increased performances for installed firms

Piccinelli, Stefania. « The impact of the COVID-19 on the airline industry emerging from online comments ». Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/22508.

Résumé :
The aim of this research is to evaluate how the novel Coronavirus impact on the airline industry is reflected on the affected travelers’ concerns expressed in the comments they write online. In this study, a sample of 639 comments related to the airline industry, written on the website of the Italian National Consumer Union, has been assessed through an automated sentiment analysis. The achieved results showed that travelers’ attention was directed mainly towards compensations, cancellations, and COVID-19 and at the same time they had mixed and unpredictable feelings. This suggests that consumers may understood that airline companies are facing unsustainable cash-flow and revenue situations. Moreover, all the hypotheses, grounded on the existing literature were refuted. Accordingly, we argue that the actual context prevents assessments based on previous assumptions and studies related to the impact of COVID-19 need to be conducted anew.

The following is a long-term excursus on the health of workers and therefore also on the characters who in the various periods animated the special technical-scientific branches known as occupational hygiene, industrial hygiene and occupational medicine in Italy. On the other hand, it will be mentioned how the people directly involved, that is the workers, their supporters and their own organizations, have lived and influenced the events concerning the work-health system. The aim is to highlight not only or not so much the working conditions and suffering, damage and pathologies that have characterized the various generations of Italian workers as well as the "ideas" of work expressed over time by the actors in the field, such as these have been accepted in the laws, regulations and prevailing standards and how these have been able, gradually but in a never homogeneous and definitive way, to affirm the tendency to carry out a "healthy", "satisfactory" work and also to propose the smart factory.

Résumé :
The paper presents the results of a research carried out in the clothing, footwear and leather goods sectors referring to the Italian territory. The survey was carried out through the collection of data on the field, with questionnaires administered to companies in the area: structured analysis on the company profile and brand identity; focus on sustainability with reference to the measures adopted by the company; technological assessment; collection of new needs expressed by each company. The result of the on-field research suggests, on the one hand, theoretical reflections relating to new sustainable approaches for the fashion sector, and on the other, technological innovation to implement value and profit for each company according to a sustainable and circular economic model. In Italy the local manufacturing systems have had their fulcrum in the industrial districts, which present themselves as centres of relations between multiple stakeholders. Generally, the openness and inclusion of stakeholders and systemic organization are essential for the sustainable development of the sector. The cultural tradition and the organization of Made in Italy production, in parallel with the Portuguese textile production systems, seem better prepared for a real ecological transition (Ricchetti & Frisa, 2011). This research proposes a model that accompanies companies on a transition path towards sustainable production. The methodology investigated, which starts from the enhancement of operational tools, contributes to promoting the adoption of new production processes and therefore to a more conscious consumption. The results achieved by SMEs in recent years, in the areas of ecological and digital transition, promise interesting developments, formulating a starting point to be used as an organizational and productive support to definitively move towards the suggested model. The discussion proposes a series of recommendations that can contribute to adopting a change in the entrepreneurial system of SMEs, vice versa, where there are contradictions and persisting barriers, it will be necessary to consider concrete and unanimously shared measures.

Résumé :
Purpose – The COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented in terms of the speed at which it spread globally, affected the whole world swiftly after the initial outbreak and has produced heterogeneous effects on various industrial sectors and particularly pronounced effects on the tourism industry. This paper analyses the effect of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic through Europe on the tourist stocks in Croatia by means of application of the event study methodology. Methodology – The analysis starts with a descriptive overview of the market-wide performance of different sectors in the period before, during and after the initial pandemic outbreak and subsequently explicitly tests for the COVID-19 outbreak effects on the tourist sector. First, a 35- day event window is specified so that important events related to the pandemic can be identified. Second, the first officially reported COVID-19 incidence in Italy and the World Health Organization’s declaration of a global pandemic are used as identified events in a shorter 10day window event study estimation. Findings – The results robustly point to the significant negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the returns of tourist stocks on the Zagreb Stock Exchange. However, the overall results do not provide evidence of the relatively stronger COVID-19 effects on the tourist sector, but rather equal effects across different sectors. Contribution – This research offers a novel comprehensive review of the literature regarding the research topic and provides insights into the sectoral effects of the global financial shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the local market. As this pandemic is increasing the market volatility, this research will be of importance to fund managers and carries implications for economic policy in terms of sectoral stimulus distribution and debt refinancing.
