Résumé :
In past decades, the technique of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) has received substantial attention both by academia and industry with the great improvement of applicable high temperature superconductors and relevant control technologies. A bridge-type inductive energy management system topology is presented for SMES applications by using a concept of digitalization. The inductive power charging, storing and discharging status are modelled, and then digitalized for the advanced control implementation. As a consequence, an inductive energy control method can be realized by the digitalized models to satisfy relative project requirements by high efficiency and control precession. New principles and methodologies provide the theoretical foundation to achieve digital power inductor energy control and superconducting inductive energy storage device operation.

Résumé :
The paper presents the results of model testing of the electrically exploded current interrupter (switch) designed for the switching system used to release the electromagnetic energy from the inductive storage to the load through a closing switch-discharger. A capacitor bank was used as a source of energy for the inductive storage. Some features of the discharger were varied in order to increase its reliability and operation speed. The obtained experimental data allowed making recommendations on practical implementation of the opening switch. The optimized version demonstrated a possibility to form current pulses with submicrosecond rise time, up to ~ 100 ns, in the low-impedance loads of the inductive storages. The obtained result is true for the currents of megaampere and multimegaampere level that makes it possible to use the opening switch for commutation of the energy sources with high energy capacity, for example, of the explosive magnetic generators.

Time-resolved current and voltage measurements for an inductive automotive spark system were made. The measurements were made in air for a range of charge time from 1-8ms, at ambient temperatures. Primary current was measured, so the primary energy can be calculated. Current and voltage signal of secondary circuit was detected, from which the spark energy and energy transformation efficiency can be calculated. Test results show that: when the charge time is 6ms, both the primary energy and spark energy reaches to saturation value, does not advanced any more with the charge time increasing; and the energy transformation efficiency is at an appropriate range.

Résumé :
Abstract Based on the distributed battery energy storage system (BESS), a grid-connection strategy considering harmonic restraint is investigated. It can compensate the harmonic current to the grid by measuring the grid harmonics, then harmonic compensation is implemented to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current. In this paper, the method of measuring harmonics in the grid and the control principle of providing power supply and harmonic compensation based on BESS are described. On this basis, the control flow is designed. Firstly, the energy storage grid-connected system is built in MATLAB/Simulink and the uncontrolled rectifier with inductive and resistance load is used for testing. The simulation results show that the grid current contains many harmonics, and the grid current THD decreases significantly by controlling BESS for harmonic compensation, which validates that the control method proposed in this paper is accurate and feasible.

Résumé :
The abundant energy available in nature can be harnessed and converted to electricity in a sustainable way to supply the necessary power to elevate the living standards of the people without access to the electricity grid. Wind power is one of the cleanest and safest of all the renewable commercial methods of generating electricity. However, wind energy is difficult to use due to its stochastic variability. Energy storage can overcome the main drawback. This article consists of studying a wind starting system based on DFIG and operating in isolated mode. This system is formed by a bank of batteries and a bidirectional DC/DC converter charging a DC bus voltage as well as these batteries. The control of this system required a cascade control. Such control needs two loops: the inside loop to control the inductive current and the outside one for continuous voltage bus. The theoretical study of this command has been validated using PSIM software.

Résumé :
Charging systems from shore to ship are typically designed based on a range of operational and design parameters, encompassing onboard power and propulsion needs, available charging durations, and the capacity of local power networks. In areas with weak grid infrastructure, onshore energy storage is often employed to facilitate high-power charging for vessels requiring short charging intervals. Nevertheless, incorporating on-shore energy storage adds complexity to the system, and the selection of system configuration can profoundly affect the efficiency of energy transfer from the grid to the vessel. This study presents a comparative analysis of energy efficiency among AC, DC, and Inductive shore-to-ship charging solutions for short-distance ferries utilizing both AC and DC-based propulsion systems. Findings illustrate that an increased reliance on onshore battery power correlates with decreased overall energy efficiency during the charging process. Thus, optimizing energy efficiency necessitates careful consideration when distributing the load between the grid and onshore battery. Results indicate that DC charging offers advantages over other solutions for AC-based propulsion systems in terms of energy efficiency. However, for DC-based propulsion systems, the most efficient solution may be either DC or AC charging, contingent upon the distribution of load between the grid and onshore battery. Furthermore, it is inferred that despite adding additional conversion stages and complexity to the system, the energy efficiency of inductive charging is comparable to wired schemes. Considering the added benefits of contactless charging, such as reliability, safety, and robustness, these findings advocate for the adoption of inductive charging as a promising solution.

Résumé :
Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems are characterized by their high-power density; they are integrated into high-energy density storage systems, such as batteries, to produce hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs), resulting in the increased performance of renewable energy sources (RESs). Incorporating RESs and HESS into a DC bus to obtain a DC microgrid concept is considered a more attractive option for solving system reliability and stability issues. In this paper, we focus on employing SMES systems based on their characteristics of a fast response and high efficiency, which contribute to increased battery lifespan, and reducing the mismatch between the energy supplied by the renewable energy source and the load demand by compensating for the effects of partial shading on the PV system on the DC bus side and the imbalance in loads on the other side of the AC bus. The incremental conductance algorithm (INC) is used for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in the PV system. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is proposed for the generation of control signals for the DC–DC chopper used to charge/discharge the SMES coil. Simulations using MATLAB/Simulink were then carried out to assess the proposed models of the (standalone and grid) connection systems.

Résumé :
The paper considers the use of a solid discharger with a cathode localized enhancement of electric field working together with an opening switch of an inductive storage to form a quick-rising current pulse in a low-impedance load. The physical factors bringing to an increase in pulse sharpening efficiency are specified. The discharger geometry variant is proposed. The technique for a determination of its parameters depending on the experimental requirements and conditions is described. The paper presents the results of the experiments on a stationary facility demonstrating a possibility to generate the current pulses with a rise front ~100 ns in the inductive loads ~10 nH. The obtained results allow giving a recommendation to use this type of dischargers to form multi-megaampere current pulses with submicrosecond rise front (up to ~100 ns) for the inductive energy storages and, in particular, for the explosive magnetic (magnetocumulative) generators., in the circuits with low-impedance loads. Abstract Energy storage units have a big role in microgrids. To enhance the inertia of the DC microgrid while achieving energy balancing of each energy storage system, an energy balancing control of the energy storage system with virtual DC motor characteristics is proposed. By adding the VDCM technique to the traditional constant voltage control and adding the SoC information of the respective energy storage system to the virtual armature induction potential of the armature loop equation in the VDCM control, compared to existing controls, this control method can enhance DC microgrid inertia while balancing the SoC of the energy storage system, as well as charging and discharging mode switching without changing the control strategy. Finally, a multi-storage DC microgrid model is built in Matlab/Simulink, and the feasibility of the method is verified by simulation.

Résumé :
This review presents a detailed summary of the latest technologies used in flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). This paper covers the types of technologies and systems employed within FESS, the range of materials used in the production of FESS, and the reasons for the use of these materials. Furthermore, this paper provides an overview of the types of uses of FESS, covering vehicles and the transport industry, grid leveling and power storage for domestic and industrial electricity providers, their use in motorsport, and applications for space, satellites, and spacecraft. Different types of machines for flywheel energy storage systems are also discussed. This serves to analyse which implementations reduce the cost of permanent magnet synchronous machines. As well as this, further investigations need to be carried out to determine the ideal temperature range of operation. Induction machines are currently stoutly designed with lower manufacturing cost, making them unsuitable for high-speed operations. Brushless direct current machines, the Homolar machines, and permanent magnet synchronous machines should also be considered for future research activities to improve their performance in a flywheel energy storage system. An active magnetic bearing can also be used alongside mechanical bearings to reduce the control systems’ complications, thereby making the entire system cost-effective.

Résumé :
Intermittent wind energy in producing optimal power flow could lead to unstable generated power. Due to this, an energy storage that can release and absorb energy need to be used in order maintains the generated voltage at the permitted quality for the load. Nowadays, tons of energy storage systems are used in storing the energy. Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) becomes one of potential mechanism that can be used to smooth the voltage output of wind turbine due to its advantages. The aim of this study is to design and implement a FESS for critical load in a wind energy system that can store energy for a short time period. Then, period of the voltage generated by FESS using different capacitance is analyzed. FESS consists of a self-excited capacitance induction motor-generator set (SEIG), controller circuit and flywheel rotor. In this study, a three phase asynchronous induction machine is used as a motor-generator due to its simplicity, cheap, robust and less maintenance. The flywheel and SEIG-motor set could store the energy for a short period of time, which can be used to compensate for wind instability. Results show that FESS generates variable powers that compensate short time power to the wind system.

Résumé :
Abstract The aim of the study is to review the sources covering the problems of accumulating electricity on the railways and to find new solutions to reduce the use of electricity in traction power supply system. The article analyses some existing types of electric energy storage devices (capacitive, inertial, superconducting inductive, electrochemical, fuel cells and pumped storage power plants), their common installation locations, advantages, and disadvantages. The possibility of using them in railway traction power supply systems, in particular in mobile traction substations, is also assessed. In addition, the article lists the parameters on the basis of which the optimum type of storage device can be selected for the given conditions. The study concludes that the use of some types of energy storage devices in mobile traction substations is acceptable when regenerative braking can be used at the site, and this method of energy saving can be recommended in the engineering of new or reconstruction of existing traction substations. It has been found that capacitive and inertial (flywheel) electrical energy storage units are the most suitable in terms of parameters for installation of traction power supply systems.

Regarding PMSG-based wind turbine generation system, this paper proposes a supercapacitor energy storage unit (SCESU) which is connected in parallel with the DC-link of the back-to-back converter to enhance its high voltage ride through performance. The analysis of the operation and control for the grid-side converter and SCESU are conducted. Based on real time digital simulators (RTDS), a model and a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) platform of PMSG-based wind turbine with SCESU is developed, and the simulation results show that the SCESU absorbs the imbalanced energy and the grid-side converter absorbs inductive reactive power during the period of voltage swell and verify the correctness and feasibility of the high voltage ride through control strategy.

Résumé :
Dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems are becoming increasingly important for on-the-move electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, to overcome range anxiety and compensate for the consumed energy while the EV is in motion. In this work, a DWPT EV charging system is proposed to be implemented on a straight road stretch such that it provides the moving EV with energy at a rate of 308 Wh/km. This rate is expected to compensate for the vehicle’s average energy consumption and allow for additional energy storage in the EV battery. The proposed charging system operates at an average power transfer efficiency that is higher than 90% and provides good lateral misalignment tolerance up to ±200 mm. Details of the proposed system’s design are presented in this paper, including EV specifications, inductive link and compensation network design and power electronic circuitry.

Résumé :
Introduction. One of the directions of development of plasma technologies consists in the formation of gas-metal plasma formations and throwing them to a certain distance. Known thrusters of plasma formation either have an electrode system that is prone to erosion, or a discharge system in a solid dielectric substance in which ablation occurs, or a complex gas-dynamic system with fuel supply. They do not provide acceleration of plasma formation in the atmosphere for a significant distance. Purpose. A theoretical and experimental study of electromechanical and thermophysical processes in a plasma thruster, which ensures the formation of a plasma formation due to thermal ionization by an induced current in a thin conductor layer during a high-voltage discharge on an inductor and the accelerating of a plasma formation in the atmosphere for a significant distance. Methodology. The proposed concept of a plasma thruster, in which the inductor inductively interacts with a combined armature, which includes an aluminum armature in the form of a thin (0.5-1 μm) foil, a copper armature made of a thicker foil (35-50 μm).On the basis of a mathematical model that takes into account the uneven distribution of currents in the inductor and conductive armatures, the features of the process of acceleration the combined armature in the atmosphere were established and experimental studies were carried out. Results. The electromechanical and thermal characteristics of the plasma thruster were calculated. It was established that the choice of the thickness of the dielectric layer of the armature, to which the aluminum and copper armatures are attached, is determined by the energy balance between the heating temperature of the aluminum armature and the electromechanical indicators of the thrower. Scientific novelty. It was experimentally established that the greatest density and homogeneity is observed in the middle of the plasma formation, which has the shape of a torus, moving away from the dielectric sheet on which the aluminum armature was located. As the voltage of the capacitive energy storage increases, the induced current density in the armature increases and the plasma formation becomes more uniform. Practical value. In comparison with the experimental results, the calculated current in the inductor coincides both in shape and in magnitude with an accuracy of 7 %. The biggest difference between the calculated and experimental currents of the inductor occurs when the aluminum armature is thermally destroyed. The transition of an aluminum armature into a plasma formation depends significantly on the voltage of the capacitive energy storage. References 26, figures 16.

Résumé :
The relevance An analysis of scientific and technical literature in the field of development and research of aircraft engine ignition systems shows that the manifestations of resonant processes in nonlinear discharge circuits of capacitive ignition systems in the presence of two energy storage devices - a storage capacitor and an inductor coil have not been studied with the issuance of recommendations for matching the parameters of energy storage devices. This problem is of significant practical interest from the point of view of optimizing the parameters of the discharge circuits, increasing the energy efficiency and igniting ability of ignition systems. Aim of research Revealing the possibilities of increasing the efficiency of capacitive ignition systems based on the use of the manifestation of resonant processes in nonlinear discharge circuits containing two energy storage devices. Research methods Studies have been carried out involving a theoretical description of the processes during the discharge of the former charged capacitor to the R-L circuit, followed by experimental confirmation of the assumptions of the alleged states, described with the alleged resonance of occurrence in the discharge circuit using a similar falling current-voltage characteristic. Results The manifestations of resonant phenomena in a capacitive ignition system during the discharge of a capacitor on a non-linear circuit R-L are investigated. It is theoretically substantiated and experimentally proved that the dependences of the voltage in the spark discharge, the current and the energy of the discharges on the capacitance of the storage capacitor at a fixed inductance of the discharge circuit are uneven with inflection points corresponding to the equality of the inductive and capacitive resistances. It is shown that the energy efficiency of the discharge circuit can remain practically unchanged with a more than 1.5-fold decrease in the capacitance of the storage capacitor in the region of manifestation of resonant processes. The results obtained make it possible to coordinate the parameters of capacitive ignition systems, to determine the optimal values of the inductance of the discharge circuits for a given value of the capacitance of storage capacitors to ensure maximum energy efficiency and igniting capacity.

Résumé :
The resonance circuit's design has a major influence on the inductive electric vehicle (EV) charging system's performance and the distance between the primary and secondary inductive coils. If resonance circuitry is not included in an inductive power transfer (IPT) system, its performance suffers dramatically and its power transfer efficiency suffers significantly. Furthermore, the design of the resonance circuit has a major impact on the rating as well as the voltage and current strains on the semiconductor switches. The sequence, amplitude, and shape of the waveform are determined by the configuration of the energy storage components. The arrangement of these components is critical in defining how the inductive power transfer system behaves and operates. A few popular architectures play an important role in shaping how the system works. In this paper, the significance and effect of resonance circuits on the inductive charging of electric vehicles have been reviewed and discussed comprehensively. Furthermore, a detailed discussion was presented for the second-order resonance circuit, the higher-order resonance circuit, and the hybrid resonance circuit. Additionally, H-bridge resonant inverter topology was discussed and three main resonant architectures for the H-bridge inverter were studied inclusively. They include the inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) resonance architecture, switched inductor-capacitor (SLC) resonance architecture, and High-gain resonance architecture. Also, a comparison of these architectures was done and represented in tabular form. Lastly, an analysis of the effect of frequency variations in the resonant circuit architectures

Résumé :
Abstract Owing to the uncontrollable and intermittent nature of wind resources, the frequency support capability of wind turbine generators has strong uncertainty. Employing energy storage systems could improve the frequency support capacity and stability of wind farms. This paper proposes a coordinated control strategy wherein wind power and energy storage collaboratively engage in frequency support operations. At the wind farm and energy storage level, the energy storage gives priority to providing the basic part of the incremental active power, and the wind turbine kinetic energy only takes the deficit. At the wind turbine level, the active power support capacity (APSC) of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) units is proposed, based on which the coordinated control among wind turbines is designed. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Résumé :
In this article, a comprehensive model is developed to study the performance of a hybrid wind–diesel energy storage system. Energy storage system exchanges both real and reactive power with the wind–diesel system to improve both frequency and voltage. For obtaining pre-disturbance steady-state scenario of the system, a modified load flow algorithm is proposed which calculates induction machine slip and other initial conditions, in addition to the results obtained with conventional load flow. A compact model is developed by integrating network model, energy storage system and machine equations along with the associated control systems. For frequency estimation concept, centre of inertia is utilised. Energy storage system is modelled as a controllable current source. Complete modelling is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Simulations are carried out for load disturbance as well as wind perturbations to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

Résumé :
As the penetration rate of wind power systems is rising, which causes the overall system’s inertia to decline, the power system’s capacity to regulate frequency will be negatively affected. Therefore, this paper investigates the inertia control of doubly fed induction generation, and an energy storage system is installed in the wind farm to respond to the frequency deviation. First, a fuzzy control-based virtual inertia adaptive control strategy is presented. The goal of dynamic adjustment of the virtual inertia coefficient is realized by taking into account the uncertain factors of wind speed and frequency change rate. A recovery strategy based on the energy storage system’s level of charge is employed to prevent overcharging and over-discharging of the battery. Then, a weight factor based on frequency deviation is introduced to combine the droop output of the energy storage system with the virtual inertia output of the doubly fed induction generation, and the joint output mode of the wind storage system is determined in each stage of primary frequency regulation. Finally, the simulation verification is performed using the wind storage system simulation model created by MATLAB. The comparison results with other control methods prove that the proposed method is effective.

Résumé :
Abstract The paper describes the application of supercapacitor energy storage system for induction traction drive test bench that replaces a real electric public transport for performing testing and researches. The suitability and usage of such bench for research purposes is explained and the importance of the development of software mathematical model for performing simulations to be done before physical implementation measures is reasoned. The working principle of the bench and applied components are described. A virtual model of the bench was built and simulations were performed using Matlab/Simulink software. The basic topology of the virtual bench model is described as well. The calculations of this work show the scaling of supercapacitor energy storage system by setting different limits of working voltage range in order to adjust them to test bench parameters, whereas the modelling compares two simulation cases – the application of less supercapacitors and the application of more supercapacitors with the same common rated voltage. The autonomous mode simulations were also performed. Simulation results are analyzed and recommendations for the application of the supercapacitor energy storage system, with respect to initial supercapacitor circuit voltage, are given.

Résumé :
In ship systems, diesel power generators are used in various systems of autonomous power plants to ensure power supply security. This article presents an autonomous hybrid system of a ship power plant with a diesel generator with a permanent magnet synchronous generator and electricity storage in parallel topology (the permanent magnet synchronous generator is connected directly to the receiving network). The electricity storage through the active converter is connected to the receiving network in parallel with the permanent magnet synchronous generator. The decoupled control of the reactive and active power in the active converter enables stabilization of the voltage in the ship’s electrical power grid while ensuring the possibility of obtaining different operating regimes of the power plant at various stages of the ship’s operation. The innovative method of voltage stabilization presented in this article is based on the compensation of the unfavorable reaction of the permanent magnet synchronous generator armature through the optimal transmission of negative inductive reactive power from the active converter to the generator using the electromagnetic properties of the synchronous generator. The active converter controls the direction of the active power transmission between the DC source, the grid, and the permanent magnet synchronous generator. This paper proposes a hybrid autonomous power plant system using battery storage in place of a single diesel generator set against the commonly used two diesel generator sets, working in parallel, to increase the energy efficiency of the power plant by minimizing the specific fuel consumption of the diesel generator set. The article examines the possibilities of such a mechatronic system design based on analytical research and analysis of electromagnetic and energy characteristics using the Matlab-Simulink program.

Résumé :
Wind energy is currently the fastest-growing energy source in the world. However, the inherent characteristic of intermittent energy production, due to the stochastic nature of wind, still comprises the main drawback of wind power. To avoid such problems, various configurations have been reccomended in order to reduce output power variation. The paper concentrates on performance benefits of adding energy storage system with the wind generator in order to regulate the electric power delivered into the power grid. Compared with other means of energy storage, the flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is the best choice to solve power quality problems. In this paper, a FESS associated to a variable speed wind generation (VSWG) is investigated by presenting two control strategies applied to the storage system equipped with an induction machine; both techniques are studied and developed and consist of a field control (FOC) and a Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). Simulation model is established in MATLAB/Simulink and comparative results are then reported.

Résumé :
Purpose. High-speed magnetolevitation transport (maglev), based on the principle of electrodynamic suspension, has features in the form of large sections of the windings of the track coils. Therefore, there is a need to study electrical processes in the circuits of these coils to improve the efficiency of the energy performance of this type of transport. The study of electrical processes in the circuits of a track power plant makes it possible to substantiate the prerequisites for the creation of a distributed energy storage and transmission system. The power plant consists of separate subsystems, including a primary energy storage unit, an energy distribution unit, and a traction module. The main purpose of this study is to determine the nature of transients in the energy distribution unit and to obtain the characteristics of the traction capacitor discharge process. Methodology. We modeled an electrical circuit that would meet the needs of the corresponding energy distribution unit of the track structure for the required operating conditions of the maglev motion system – control pulses with different combinatorics. In the course of the study, computer modeling of physical systems in the Scilab software environment was used. Findings. A review of existing studies has been carried out and the relevance of the study of the track power plant for high-speed magnetolevitation transport has been substantiated. The basic mathematical dependences of electrical circuits with capacitive and inductive elements are given. A structural representation of the inductive section of the maglev motion system with a traction module is created: traction coils and a capacitor, as well as a converter-pulse signal unit. An effective tool for analyzing transient processes has been created. Originality. For the first time, the structural and elemental realization of the power distribution unit for the road power plant of high-speed land transport is proposed. The time dependencies describing the processes in the proposed system during the implementation of the principles of pulse control of traction coils are obtained. Based on the analysis of the nature of transients in the traction capacitor circuit, the directions of further development of this power plant are proposed. Practical value. The results of the work create the basis for further research and development of experimental research models (test bench) of the maglev in order to obtain new ratios and characteristics that will confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the new control principle of the proposed system.
