Résumé :
The increasing popularity of inclusion classrooms has placed a large number of students with special needs with the ones without disabilities. Often, general education teachers lack sufficient training in proven inclusion practices that is necessary to cope with the increase in diverse learning needs. The absence of sufficient training can lead to disruptive behavior and also, induce more stress in the classroom for the educator and the students. The qualitative case study aimed to explore the strategies and techniques used by elementary school teachers to successfully manage inclusion classrooms and to learn how the teachers handled stress. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. The data collection methods involved observing school classrooms and interviewing teachers. A total of 6 teachers were interviewed and 3 observations were made in the classroom settings of these teachers. All the participants were teachers located in a small rural district of South Central Texas. The collected data were analyzed using cross-case analysis. The findings of this study indicate the most common methods of classroom management, that include the centers formed by small groups of students, and the tailoring of activities based on students' needs. Further, it was learnt that the teachers used a variety of techniques to mitigate their stress levels and to manage their classrooms in a calm manner. Also, using appropriate classroom management techniques can help the students with special needs to learn ways in which they can adapt their own behavior through self-regulation, to function more effectively with others.

Despite moving the world forward, technological progress has left many people behind. Science and technology industries see themselves as open to all. Yet, they lack inclusion: not involving and empowering people across a range of human differences. Hackathons are a microcosm of these industries and suffer from a similar problem. By examining hackathons, we can uncover principles for creating, what I call, radical inclusion. Radical inclusion is the interbeing with all, seeing our realities and existence as interwoven. However, existing social systems hinder radical inclusion. Thus, we have to be diligent in removing these barriers. Put simply, we have to organize for radical inclusion. This thesis is a reflection of my lived experiences and secondary research and an investigation of ways to organize for radical inclusion. It includes lessons learned from organizing, attending, and studying hackathons and analogous experiences. These lessons culminate into five principles that ensure that a hackathon is radically inclusive. This research has revealed five principles that can create and cultivate radical inclusion: ** Radical inclusion is not a default social state today. Be intentional about being radically inclusive. Make it an imperative for all in an organization. ** Radical inclusion is uncomfortable. Honor this discomfort and empower organizing team and participants to navigate such situations. ** Radical inclusion necessitates meeting people where they are, as they are, in their journeys. Embody deep hospitality with wide open arms to all. ** Radical inclusion comes from encouraging human transformation, a continuous process. Foster patience and encourage forgiveness for self and others. ** Radical inclusion is rooted in a ruthless search for truth. Enable all to be soft bellied: to let personal guards down. This nurtures curiosity to explore and be moved by the truth of the other.

Résumé :

This study outlines the research methods and findings of an assessment performed to evaluate an organization?s diversity and inclusion climate. A survey was conducted with 67 of 81 of the organization?s employees, followed by 15 interviews, and six focus groups. The study found this organization to be very diverse and to place a high value on the importance of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) to its performance. However, there are limited formal D&I structures currently in place. A comprehensive D&I management strategy integrated with the organization?s business strategy will be critical to supporting achievement of its mission. This organization plays a unique role in bridging the gap between diverse student populations and more homogeneous tech corporations. Given this, the organization embodies the complexity of D&I challenges that many organizations must face in creating an inclusive culture in order to increase retention, job satisfaction, engagement, and performance.

Avigdor, Tali. « Practising talent management : processes of judgment, inclusion and exclusion ». Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/19621.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Talent management is an organisational process aimed at maximising the benefit gained from the organisation's workforce, mostly by assessing the future potential of senior organisational members to fill key positions based on their proportional contribution to the business. Despite the increasing prevalence of talent management, evidence is accumulating to indicate an extremely low success rate of just 20-25% in predicting high performers. While talent management continues to address a growing business need, a better understanding of the process may help to refine its practice. The underpinning assumptions of the practice of talent management are that organisations are systemic and linear, and that talent management must produce a single answer identifying what it means to be a 'talent' in any specific circumstance. As a profession, talent management also maintains a fantasy of control: the expectation that assessed individuals will indeed behave as anticipated, and that stated targets will remain unchanged. As a progressive and trending HR process, talent management's close connection to organisational power relations and political dynamics is rarely acknowledged. The emotional toll on assessed senior executives, as well as potential ramifications for their colleagues, is also often overlooked, despite the significant implications for individual careers and broader inferences of inclusion-exclusion inherent in the process of talent selection. Talent management practitioners and scholars tend not to consider the impact on individuals of inaccurate assessments and mistaken decisions. As a talent manager practitioner who decrees the fate of individuals, such glaring oversights provoked in me an acute ethical anxiety that drove this research. This work offers a critical perspective on the practice of talent management - in particular, the process of judgment involved in the assessment of 'high potentials' and the potent dynamics of inclusion in/exclusion from the talent group. Having witnessed first-hand the inconsistency between apparently robust predictions (based on best practice) and subsequent outcomes, I began this research with strong feelings of ambivalence towards my practice of 25 years and my prospering business of 10 years. The critical perspective of the current study took shape within the research framework, which is based on the philosophy of pragmatism and the complex responsive process of relating that draws on it, as well as on process sociology and complexity sciences. The research methodology insists that scholars take their own direct experience seriously, collect their raw data through writing narratives, and then exercise reflection and reflexivity both as individuals and as part of the Doctor of Management (DMan) learning community. The narratives 'translate experience so that it is meaningful to the reader' (Cunliffe, 2010, p. 228). Applying this innovative approach not only to my research, but also to my professional practice, has led me to challenge the most fundamental assumptions of talent management. I now have a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the process of judgment at its core, and have developed a new way to approach and implement this process within my work. This thesis culminates in three main arguments describing talent management from a new perspective, as well as redefining the role and degree of involvement of talent management consultants. First, the central process of judgment emerged not as an objective analysis communicated in a unidirectional, linear way from the assessor to the assessed, but rather as a relational and social process that involves shifting power relations and an inclusion-exclusion dynamic influenced by many unpredictable factors. Second, from the perspective of the research framework, the assessor can no longer be seen as an objective observer, but must be regarded as a participant who is simultaneously both involved and detached and who must rely on their practical judgment. Talent management's traditional promise of future-oriented focus and reliable predictions is illusory, given that all participants are continuously merging their ongoing experiences to spontaneously co-create the future in unpredictable ways. . Understanding that the assessment process is not a simple numerical exercise (ranking individuals on various scales) and that no single truth can be obtained through an assessment process (since assessment results are co-created with all participants in the process) has eased my ethical concerns and enabled me to continue practising my profession with confidence, by taking a fresh viewpoint of what it is that I am doing. It is my hope that other talent management practitioners will find these insights useful and generalisable, and valid to their own practice - extrapolating from the local to the global.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Despite recent trends toward more participatory processes within development and hazard management, technical expertise remains privileged compared to other forms of knowledge. This dissertation explores the epistemological and material consequences of an urban renovation and landslide management project that has excluded residents from participation in planning and execution. The municipal government of Manizales, Colombia intends to resettle thousands of impoverished families from the landslide-prone hillsides of the city into subsidized apartments. While commendable for an enormous investment in the safety of residents, the focus on physical vulnerability will likely enhance socio-economic dimensions of vulnerability and leave many residents in more difficult living conditions, even to the point of settlement on other slopes. The municipal government relies on rational ordering to develop economic and land use policies associated with the renovation project, but simplification leaves important components of livelihood strategies and well-being illegible. As a result, the efforts will likely exacerbate both socioeconomic and physical vulnerability of an already marginalized population. As residents negotiate for greater influence over the process and outcomes, they must challenge the hegemonic epistemological structures or work within them. This dissertation discusses some of the strategies used by residents and the challenges they face, as well as the implications of this work for other topics dominated by technical expertise. Understanding why people live in hazardous areas in the first place is critical for developing a more complex and more effective urban hazard management strategy, which should include consideration of livelihoods, social interactions, and non-technical knowledge.

This paper describes how blockchain technology alters the dynamic within financial services and focuses on the impact on US financial inclusion. First, I provide an overview of the financial services industry and the issues associated with financial inclusion. Second, I provide a framework for reviewing blockchains. Lastly, I take an in-depth look at the economics of offering checking accounts, and identify approaches for how blockchains will redefine the value chain in financial services. Blockchain technology brings new avenues for companies within the payments value chain to work more closely together to reduce costs for all parties involved. Banks are leading the way in exploring how blockchains will make them more efficient. By partnering with merchants, banks stand to make the most out of the lower costs to network securely promised by blockchains. In this process, banks set themselves up to offer no-fee checking accounts to all consumers, without taking a loss on each account, as they do today. Banks' ability to profitably offer no-fee checking to unbanked and underbanked customers is the key to increasing financial inclusion in the US, and ultimately across the globe.

Résumé :
This dissertation proposes an Index of Financial Inclusion (IFI) for Sub-Saharan Africa and then uses the developed index to investigate the significance of the relationship between financial inclusion and economic development and growth. This is important because there is no consensus in the literature on how to measure financial inclusion or on the direction of the causal relationship between financial inclusion and economic development or growth. This dissertation aims to contribute to these two debates whilst focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, where development (potentially encouraged by financial inclusion) is desperately needed. The IFI for Sub-Saharan Africa is arrived at by first determining those dimensions of financial inclusion that are important for the countries in the region. This was done through a text analysis of National Financial Inclusion Strategies (NFISs) of 13 Sub- Saharan African countries overlaid on a detailed literature review. Access, Usage and Quality are the key dimensions for measuring levels of financial inclusion in the region. Thereafter, appropriate variables for the measurement of those dimensions were identified and combined using different methodologies: the simple geometric mean method, the inverse Euclidean distance method and, lastly, the factor analysis method. The relationship between the developed index and economic development and growth is tested using correlations and regression analyses. It was demonstrated that the IFI fits the NFISs of Sub-Saharan African countries and is practically executable. This implies that the IFI is perhaps more appropriate to be used in the region than the global measures previously proposed. Weak correlations between the IFI and economic development or growth were found. These last tests were hampered by small sample sizes and thus the causation debate, mentioned in the motivation paragraph, could not be resolved. However, the proposed IFI for Sub- Saharan Africa shows potential.

Résumé :
This dissertation investigates aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion, adaptive management, and evaluation in environmental education (EE), and is composed of and introduction, three stand-alone manuscripts (Chapters 2-4), and a conclusion. The introduction gives a brief overview of EE and explains why the topics of study included in this dissertation are important to address. In Chapter 2, we used pre-experience student surveys to understand how preparation, adult support, and students' racial identities influence student attendance to a residential environmental education program. Chapter 3 identifies areas and approaches for improving evaluation processes in EE and practitioner satisfaction with those processes. We collected these data using an online survey promoted on social media and emailed to EE practitioners involved in the North American Association for Environmental Education and the Association of Nature Center Administrators. Chapter 4 outlines a culturally responsive evaluation framework for use in EE. The results of these studies show there is far more to be done in the field of EE to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all audiences, to promote the use of evaluation as a tool for continuous learning and improvement, and to ensure evaluations are valid for and reflective of the culture of program participants. The conclusion discusses the two prevalent themes embedded in these manuscripts, namely diversity, equity and inclusion, and evaluation in EE, and ends with a reflection on my time here as a Ph.D. student and where I see my career path heading. This dissertation is meant to provide ideas and suggestions to environmental education practitioners that they can implement in hopes of improving EE and evaluation to meet the needs of all audiences and to address global environmental challenges.
Doctor of Philosophy
To work collaboratively and find solutions to the sustainability challenges and social justice issues we face as a society requires new generations to obtain a wide range of knowledge, skills, and motivations. Environmental education (EE) has been shown to equip students with these necessary skills, including increasing knowledge and awareness about environmental issues, enhancing or changing attitudes as they relate to the environment, promoting environmentally responsible behaviors, and building critical thinking, leadership, and collaboration skills. There is a growing recognition that the field of EE must continually adjust and improve its programming to meet the needs of all audiences and to remain relevant for our ever-changing world. The foundations of EE stem from White, Eurocentric values and world views, which can perpetuate inequities in program attendance, participation, and impact between Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and White people. The research included in this dissertation investigates aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion, adaptive management, and evaluation in EE. Results show there is far more to be done in the field of EE to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all audiences, to promote the use of evaluation as a tool for continuous learning and improvement, and to ensure evaluations are valid for and reflective of the culture of program participants. The conclusion of this dissertation discusses two prevalent themes embedded in these manuscripts, namely diversity, equity and inclusion, and evaluation in EE, and ends with a reflection on my time here as a Ph.D. student and where I see my career path heading. This dissertation is meant to provide ideas and suggestions to environmental education practitioners that they can implement in hopes of improving EE and evaluation to meet the needs of all audiences and to address global environmental and social challenges.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects inclusion-exclusion on the job-related attitudes of the organizational workforce. These attitudes included job satisfaction, organizational commitment, burnout, and turnover intention. A quantitative survey was conducted using a sample of employees of a social service organization in San Bernardino County. Participants include employees from all levels and program areas of the social service organization. Study data was collected through the use of a self-report questionnaire. Measures were used to explore commitment to the organization, diversity perception, job satisfaction, turnover intention and burnout, the dependent variables. Using SPSS software to analyze data, descriptive statistics, correlation, and Mann-Whitney U analysis were conducted. More than half of the survey participants, as presented in Table 1 (see Appendix D), identified as women (n=35, 85.4%) and five (12.2%) accounted for the participants that identified as men. Results showed that Inclusion was significantly related to all job related attitudes except burnout, gender and race. Results were consistent with the literature in that inclusion is related to positive work-related attitudes, but inconsistent in regards to its relation with gender and race.

Hollingsworth, Teresa K. « Inclusion in the Intelligence Community : Experiences of African American Women ». Thesis, The George Washington University, 2021. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=28257908.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
To counter threats to national security within an increasingly complex and unstable global arena, the Intelligence Community (IC) requires a highly skilled workforce with diversity at all organizational levels. African American women, a historically marginalized group within the IC, are underrepresented in the senior grades (senior executive, GS-15 and GS-14), which suggests inadequacies in creating and sustaining inclusive environments that provide opportunities for advancement to historically underrepresented populations. Given that the experience of inclusion of African American women civilian employees within the IC is unexplored in the literature, this basic qualitative study, informed by the theory of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991), a conceptual framework of inclusion (Jansen et al., 2014), and a model of inclusive organizations (Shore et al., 2018), explored how African American women civilian employees at a national intelligence agency describe the phenomenon and the experience of inclusion, and the meaning the participants assigned to inclusion in connection to their perception of opportunities for professional development. The nine African American women who participated in this study described inclusion as a multi-dimensional construct including a sense of belonging, the opportunity to participate, and being valued as a contributor. The participants explained that having opportunities for development was integral to the experience of inclusion, and that they experienced inclusion when supervisors supported their participation in opportunities for development. However, experiences of “not inclusion,” as opposed to inclusion, were predominant in the participants’ narratives. Stereotype threat emerged as playing a negative role in the experience of inclusion, suggesting an area for further research and indicating the need for organizational interventions to disrupt organizational cues of stereotypes. The participants’ perceptions of organizational change and their observations of senior leaders informed their views of the organization’s commitment to inclusion. The findings point to organizational initiatives to improve inclusion, such as enabling employees to inform themselves about and self-select for development opportunities and establishing and holding supervisors accountable for adhering to standards of inclusive leader behaviors.

Jenner, Simon. « An investigation into a local education authority's inclusion strategy : the construction and management of change ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2005. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/889/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The research investigated how various people, such as Local Education Authority officers, teachers and parents, represented change (defined as becoming different from a previous state) concerning an inclusion strategy. The investigation used a case study approach and methodology based upon grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967) and heuristic research (Moustakas, 1990). Several different case studies within the LEA were used, a formal consultation concerning the change of specialist provision, staff views in a “MLD” school and LEA officer views. Data used was discourse, written and spoken, semi-structured interviews, public meetings and media publications. NVivo, a computer programme, was used to analyse the discourse, relating this to different theoretical orientations, cognitive psychology, social psychology, management theory and school improvement. Foucault (1977), especially the concept of episteme/paradigms, provided the most useful theoretical framework for analysing data. It is argued that inclusion within the case study LEA was not a paradigm shift, but change around the edge of a paradigm with a stable core, which related to groups of pupils being seen as different. Comparison has been made with Kuhn (1996) on how scientific paradigms are modelled, linking together the research methodology and findings.

Chitaka, Takunda Yeukai. « Inclusion of leakage into life cycle management of products involving plastic as a material choice ». Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32574.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The accumulation of plastic waste in the natural environment has been a major environmental concern for many decades. However, the environmental impacts associated with leakage are not taken into consideration under current life-cycle based approaches, despite packaging being a major application area of life cycle assessment. Furthermore, there is limited quantitative information on the leakage propensities and rates of different products. This presents a critical limitation during the life cycle management (LCM) of products destined for regions where they are likely to be dumped or littered. This thesis investigates the feasibility and influence of using product specific leakage rates as a proxy indicator for potential marine environmental impacts, to inform the life cycle management of products in which plastic is a material choice. In particular, it explores whether a realistic understanding of leakage rates, differentiated by major use, may facilitate the development of effective interventions to mitigate the growing problem of marine plastic pollution. This entails the quantification of leakage rates for selected plastic items identified as highly prone to leakage based on a series of beach surveys. The potential influence of providing such specific knowledge is investigated via the exploration of current LCM practices for plastic products employed by key value-chain actors in the plastics industry. In addition, the life cycle management of three key items identified as problematic (straws, cotton bud sticks and beverage bottle lids) is explored via a case study approach. Beach accumulation surveys are often used to estimate plastic flows into the marine environment. Thus, two series of beach surveys were conducted across five beaches with varying catchment area characteristics in Cape Town, over two periods in 2017 and 2018 – 2019 respectively. Daily accumulation rates varied across all sites ranging from 38 – 2962 items.day-1 .100m-1 during the first sampling period and 305 – 2082 items.day-1 .100m-1 during the second. Plastic was the major contributor accounting for 85.6 – 98.9% of all items by count. Despite the variations in litter accumulation rates and composition, there was significant commonality in the items which were identified as major contributors. The top 12 most prevalent and abundant identifiable plastic items accounted for 43 – 66% during the first sampling period, and 41 – 73% during the second. Ten of these items were prevalent during both periods, eight of which were associated with food consumed on-the-go, including beverage bottle lids, polystyrene food containers, single sweet wrappers, snack packets and straws. This indicates that the high litterability of these items was consistent across catchment areas and sampling periods. Furthermore, when ratioed to waste generation, items found to be major contributors were found to have significantly higher leakage rates in comparison to less prevalent items. The increasing concern surrounding plastic pollution has pressured value-chain actors to review their approaches to the life cycle management of plastic products. This has led to the development of strategies focussed on plastic packaging which were not commonplace across all companies. However, these strategies are not necessarily aimed at mitigating plastic pollution but are more broadly concerned with sustainable product design, emphasising design for recycling and supporting recycling activities at end-of-life as part of their extended producer responsibility. Thus, the extent to which these strategies address plastic pollution is limited. Furthermore, value-chain actors reported varied approaches to product prioritisation for intervention which are often not grounded in empirical evidence but instead based on anecdotes and limited logic. This may be attributed to a lack of reliable product-specific information surrounding plastic pollution. Such approaches have the potential to prioritise products ii which are not major contributors to marine pollution in lieu of those that are. Interventions targeted towards products that were identified as prone to leakage, including straws and cotton bud sticks, were catalysed by consumer pressure and societal expectations at large. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates the need for product-specific knowledge on leakage to facilitate responsible and effective life cycle management of products involving plastic as a material choice. Furthermore, it has demonstrated the feasibility of providing such information through the use of leakage rates. Leakage rates have the potential to play an important role in product life cycle management, allowing for the identification of products which are highly prone to leakage into the environment. Thus, their integration into LCM practice has the potential to facilitate the development of targeted strategies to address plastic pollution.

Li, Chenxi. « Advanced Load Management Techniques with the Inclusion of Distributed Energy Resources in a Smart Grid ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17855.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Smart grid has been under continuous development since 2008. It requires the re-construction of traditional power systems. As an important component of a smart grid, load management has been diffusely known as a bright solution to enhance the demand side energy efficiency and optimize energy consumption. In this project, load management techniques on the demand side are studied at two levels in a smart grid: the smart home level and the load aggregator level. At the smart home level, this project studies the development of home energy management systems (HEMSs), which optimally schedule home energy resources to minimize home electricity costs. The potential of plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) is harnessed by the developed HEMS to supply power to the home and absorb surplus residential renewable power output. At the load aggregator level, this project studies the feasibility of aggregating thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) in multiple buildings to bid in the wholesale power market. An optimal scheduling model for TCLs is proposed in this project to minimize imbalance costs of the load aggregators in the power market. To address the uncertainties in imbalance penalty prices, this project introduces the rolling horizon optimization (RHO) technique to continuously update TCL ON/OFF plans with the realization of imbalance prices. This research also includes techniques for solving load management optimization models. A new heuristic optimization method, Natural Aggregation Algorithm (NAA), is used to solve the aforementioned HEMSs and TCLs scheduling models. The encoding scheme and constraint handling strategies are studied, and the efficiency of NAA in solving the models is also investigated.

Résumé :

This study explored the culturally driven variables in the marketing process that contribute to a brand's success or minimize cultural missteps. The primary research question was: How are consumer brand organizations building capabilities and organizing to embed cultural inclusion and insights throughout the marketing communications process? Twenty senior-level marketing executives contributed to the mixed-methods study. Five critical variables were found to be consistent across industries: effective data collection, reporting, and integration are critical; leadership must be courageous and culturally skilled; strategic alignment around cultural inclusion throughout the enterprise and across internal and external stakeholders is necessary; culturally adaptive talent management is required; and an end-to-end focus and recalibration of the processes requires resource investments and a commitment to hardwire a refined approach. Recommendations for leveraging the variables included a greater focus on data integration, inclusive leadership development, process recalibration and development of cultural agility competencies, and knowledge sharing across industries.

Résumé :
Previous research has not specified the puzzling occurrence of the low prevalence of natural resource management (NRM) in intrastate peace- and ceasefire agreements. The purpose of this thesis is to address this gap by applying the theoretical perspectives on high natural resource abundance. High natural resource abundance produces conditions for poor economic management, which may serve as a possible explanation of the low prevalence of NRM. The result of the study indicates a negative correlation between high natural resource abundance and an inclusion of NRM in intrastate peace- and ceasefire agreements. Thus, the hypothesis “If a high level of natural resource abundance exits, there is a lower probability of an inclusion of NRM in intrastate peace- and ceasefire agreements” is upheld. Since the assumptions of the theories do appear to hold, the thesis offers findings that further our understanding of the low prevalence of NRM in intrastate peace- and ceasefire agreements.

Based upon the review of the existing literature regarding Latinos and the outcomes of interviewing 24 participants (13 females and 11 males) in this research study, there are ample opportunities to conduct future empirical studies. The results of this study show the challenges first-generation Latino immigrants faced in the workplace and the importance for organizations with a diverse workforce to foster a more inclusive work environment for Latino immigrants. There is growing evidence that diversity and inclusion initiatives are critical for multicultural organizations. However, the results organizations have achieved and their efforts to create an inclusive workplace for Latino immigrants have been dissatisfactory thus far (Cox Jr., 2011). The methodology applied in this study was a qualitative approach to reflect the essence of the phenomenon studied. Results from this research found 14 family units and four major themes. These themes described how first-generation Latino immigrants understood and defined diversity and inclusion, their positive and negatives perceptions in the work environment, workplace challenges they faced, and their insights on organizational development. Additionally, this research discovered how interviewed participants were excluded by others and by themselves in the workplace. Lastly, this research study contributes to the literature and to the field by offering information that would eventually promote a better understanding of Latino immigrants and a more inclusive environment that encourages belongingness, uniqueness, and a constructive work experience for Latino immigrants.

A combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies was used to answer the following three questions: 1) What is the effect of demographic variables on diversity and inclusion? 2) Is there a relationship between diversity, inclusion and performance in corporate workplaces? 3) What are the components that drive diversity and inclusion in a corporate workplace in South Africa? The research was conducted in a division of a multinational corporation in South Africa. The quantitative analysis was run using the InclusionIndex(R) survey to get a measurement of diversity and inclusion in the organisation. The qualitative methodology included semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Questions one and two were tested empirically using a combination of analysis of variance and structured equation modelling. Question three was answered using the consolidated findings of the quantitative and qualitative components of the InclusionIndex survey, the semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and insights from related literature.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the mechanisms underlying how team diversity and inclusion affect the product development and product commercialisation performance. Extant literature draws primarily on company boards and top management teams for evidence of the economic benefits of diversity. These findings are inconclusive. This research analyses ten management and delivery team combinations from two co-located strategic business units operating in an international medical technology company at one of their global R&D facilities based in Australia. The teams were responsible for the design, development and launch of medical device products between March 2008 and May 2017. Gender, age and tenure diversity and perceived inclusion are investigated to determine how these influence on-time and within budget completion, the economic value-added – in terms of incremental revenue and margin – and overall performance as a combination of all four factors. The investigation finds that mostly homogeneous delivery teams directed by heterogeneous management teams produce outstanding outcomes. Low perceived inclusion is associated with project management performance; however, high levels of inclusion are essential to financial and overall performance. Interviews reveal that cognitive diversity and psychological safety are highly valued and prevalent where teams regularly interact on a level that transcends the requirements of the task at hand. The results contribute to closing gaps in the body of literature by demonstrating the importance of context when analysing the effects of diversity and inclusion on team performance. The findings confirm existing theory on the superordinate role of management in creating a climate conducive to performance. The findings support ongoing investigation into contextually anchored diversity conditions and are of value to practitioners creating high performing teams by suggesting task appropriate combinations of diversity conditions.

Résumé :
Having a modern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is seen as increasingly important if an organisation wants to compete in today’s business environment. The implementation of a new ERP system can result in added automatization and the replacement and/or coupling of legacy systems. The replacement and coupling of legacy systems can help an organisation increase data integrity and accessibility by lowering data fragmentation. Previous research on the topic of ERP implementations has emphasized user participation as an important factor when aiming to succeed with an implementation. The research is however inconsistent with its use of participation and involvement where involvement is often used synonymously with participation, but sometimes it signifies that the implementation is of personal importance to the user. This study defines user participation as the user partaking in activities relating to the implementation, and user involvement is defined as the user perceiving the project or system as important. This study also introduces a new term: user inclusion, which encompasses both user participation, and if a user is on the receiving end of one-way communication, for example when receiving a newsletter. This study argues that symbolic adoption, the belief that implementing the system is a good idea, is an important part of system success and uses a combination of factors from the UTAUT model and the I/S success model as antecedents to the dimensions of symbolic adoption that has been presented in previous research. The purpose of this study is to examine how users are included in ERP implementation processes, and how their inclusion in the process affects users’ symbolic adoption. To address this purpose, a qualitative multi-case study that included two cases was conducted. In order to answer how users are included, this study divides how into three sub-questions; who; when and in what way users were included throughout the implementation. This study concludes that users’ inclusion increases over time throughout the implementation process, both in terms of influence, and in number of participating users. This study also shows that users included in project initiatives can affect the antecedents to symbolic adoption in various ways, both their own symbolic adoption, and that of their non-participating colleagues. An example of this is how intended users’ expectations can be managed through communication and when they get first-hand experience of the system, their expectations correct themselves so that they are closer to the actual performance and effort required. The antecedents, performance and effort expectancy, are in turn linked to the symbolic adoption dimension effort worthiness.

Access to appropriate financial services is still a major challenge in many developing economies. Efforts to resolve these challenges are generally included in the wider financial inclusion initiatives, which aim to provide universal access to affordable, quality financial services, which targeted markets will find useful in meeting financial needs. The lack of financial inclusion is generally worse for remote communities that are normally dependent on agriculture for generating an income. In this study, I review some of these challenges, with a particular focus on small scale farming in Africa, highlighting some of the products that these farmers may require but cannot access at the time of writing. The main focus is finance products that farmers cannot access, mostly because they lack suitable assets that banks recognize as collateral to minimize risk. Nevertheless, these farmers hold claim to assets such as livestock, land and harvests, which, unfortunately cannot be easily used as collateral. Technology, may however, be applied to improve the way farmers may benefit from these assets. I review the potential of implementing blockchain technology to facilitate transfer of value based on the assets that farmers cannot fully take advantage of in the current financial system. I review some of the potential pitfalls to applying this technology, with a particular emphasis on the local conditions in the African markets under consideration.

As a tourist specialisation, the Ecological Tourism has been able to associate the experience of being in contact with the nature to the ecological consciousness and environmental conservation. In this context, Guaramiranga (CearÃ-Brazil) reveals its no totally exploited potential. In the last years, Guaramiranga, which has been recognised by the music, theatre and gastronomic festivals, has received many visitors interested in the Ecological Tourism. Ecological trails, waterfall-bathing and adventure sports are examples of the activities available in the place. Nevertheless, Guaramiranga is not prepared to receive such demand, especially when the elderly and disabled people are included in this group. They usually require more than the standard tourist infra-structure. According to that, three inter-related and dependent variants were considered into the subject: place, services and demands. They were thought as parametres to suggest some possible corrections for the problems. Despite the fact that Guaramiranga has natural attractions to develop satisfactorily the Ecological Tourism, it does not have adapted tourist resources nor prepared professionals to make the elderly and disabled people welcome. Considering the increase of the number of elderly and disabled people in the world, the tourist demand variation observed in the town could be reduced. This research concluded that Guaramiranga has defects in its paviment and street construction, water and electrical energy supporting, besides the inadequate access to the tourist attractions. The unsufficient services to the elderly and disabled people are results of the abscence of itineraries to them as well as adapted spaces. The availability of products that fulfill their interests and needs and the efficient, sustainable and accessible usage of the existent infra-structure would benefit the visitors by means of the Ecological Tourism. Politicians, entrepreneurs and the local people may change that situation by promoting and discussing activities related to the Ecological Tourism and social inclusion.

Résumé :
Blackfin tuna Thunnus atlanticus, dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, and wahoo Acanthocybium solandri currently are not managed under the highly migratory species (HMS) fishery management plan (FMP) despite being biologically highly migratory and co-occurring in major fisheries. A review of past international, domestic and regional management regimes; recent consolidations of FMPs; the re-classification of some species within the FMPs and of the migratory patterns of these three species clearly draws into question the application of the inclusion criteria for the HMS FMP. In order to collect stakeholder opinion on including these three species into the HMS FMP, a survey was launched via online fishing forums. However, only 87 respondents participated in the 2 months-long survey process, with 43 % not even completing the whole of the survey. Aside from refusal to participate, the responses on the forums were that of extreme opposition. So, although the nature of these species certainly qualifies them to fall under this FMP, the reaction from the recreational fishing community would make these changes difficult. Given that these three stocks are not stressed nor overfished, the need to place these species under the HMS FMP may not be the best course of action at this time. Moreover, such an action could potentially hurt the recreational fishing industry by adding additional and unnecessary regulations.

What benefits can technology bring to the finance industry? Can it disrupt the oldest medium of exchange in the world, physical currency? If it can, are there any benefits to it, and most importantly, how would you do it? Our research aims to answer those questions. It looks at various sources that have spent a significant amount of time explaining why transitioning from a cash-dependent market into a cash-lite market is beneficial. Furthermore, it builds on this concepts and looks at the largest ever attempt at this transition and examines the benefits, and challenges it has faced. We deep dive into the Indian demonetization experiment. Most importantly our research draws five-key insights for how India is making this transition, and later we use those insights as a framework to examine a different market, Panama and draw a clear set of recommendations for that country to make such a transition. The framework, however, is to be utilized as a lens for which any market can be analyzed, and such a transition can be made.

Currently, discussions about the topic of inclusive education are very common. Inclusion in a regular school is one of the greatest challenges imposed on Brazilian education, as it was established by law nº 13,146 on July 6, 2015. The research will be conducted in a specific public school with students that attend the first stage of Elementary Education in the city of Manaus. There were concerns and observations about the factors that interfere with the inclusion process of the disabled students which led me to develop the research. The general objective is to analyze how the process of these students inclusion occurs. The research aims to analyze the actions of the management team regarding the disabled student's inclusion and identify possible difficulties teachers will experience in their work performance. For the purpose of this work, it is intended to propose actions that can improve the process of inclusion in that school. Therefore, in the intent of reflecting about inclusive education, we aim to answer the following question: What are the obstacles in the process of disabled student’s inclusion in the state institution? Based on this answer, the importance of the present investigation is justified, since the manager must be attentive to the educational policies, to recognize that the academic and social development of the disabled student needs to be respected and to guarantee that the student's access to school will have also encouragement for his permanence and his success in life.

In Mexico, as in other Latin American countries, school relationships –crucial for ensuring the right to education— are framed under the concept of school convivencia. This Spanish language term refers to the experiences of living together and learning to live together. In Mexico the need to improve convivencia has gone hand in hand with concerns about the need to increase citizen protection and reduce social violence. Educational policies foster the role of schools in this regard, but schools are often perceived as victims of an external harsh context that hinders the possibility of transformation. The ethnographic research here presented is aimed to analyse the relationships between two Mexican schools and their local communities, particularly in terms of families’ engagement, and the implications of such relationships for school convivencia. Data from participant observations, interviews and surveys was analysed using grounded theory oriented coding and situational analysis. The notion of convivencia was theoretically developed using a distinction between restrictive and comprehensive approaches. School practices were examined through an analytical scheme based on explicit and tacit convivencia practices, highlighting processes of conflict management, inclusion and participation. The main findings show, firstly, a restrictive understanding of school convivencia in both the educational policy and in the schools’ explicitly recognized work on convivencia, which is based on modifying students’ individual wrong behaviour. Secondly, that a wider more comprehensive approach which includes other types of actors and relationships is needed to explain and intervene in school convivencia. Finally, four modes –alliance, confrontation, detachment, collaboration- are presented as forms to understand convivencia patterns between families and schools. These modes aid to explain how constructions around the “appropriate” family and the “appropriate” involvement –in relation especially to the notion of “dysfunctional families”— shape specific patterns of relationships that contribute to the exclusion of the schools’ most vulnerable population.

Résumé :
At the intersection of adult education and social gerontology, and propelled by the ageing phenomenon, educational gerontology has a critical place in the study of older adult education. To contend with older learners' needs, professional adult educators require an enhanced preparation, and concomitance to a reinvigoration of current adult learning programs to include the constructs of educational gerontology and the geragogical imperative. Through survey and interviews, this research investigated evidence of, and the capacity for, Australian Adult Education programs and Ageing Research centres to meet this requirement. Results of this case study indicate a paucity of evidence of educational gerontology in adult education programs, coupled with significant potential for capacity development in this field through collaboration with Ageing Research initiatives. The findings suggest an expansion of current curriculum in adult education programs to include aspects of educational gerontology, professional development of Adult Education academics in the specialized area of educational gerontology, and broader adult education engagement with external stakeholders and the ageing research community as a contribution to social betterment.

Martinsen, Uni. « Towards greener supply chains : Inclusion of environmental activities in relationships between logistics service providers and shippers ». Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Logistik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-102564.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
It is well-recognised that companies are under pressure to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their operations. Logistics service providers (LSPs), who through their transport and logistics operations have a large negative impact on the environment, are one type of supply chain actor that is under such pressure. However, in order for LSPs to be able to lower their environmental impact sufficiently, their customers, the shippers, also need to take responsibility. This thesis takes its starting point in the relationships between LSPs and shippers and argues that in order for LSPs’ environmental activities to reach their full potential, the shippers must be included in the activities. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and explain how supply chain actors, with a specific focus on logistics service providers and shippers, can include environmental activities in their relationships with each other. This comprises identifying those environmental activities that are relevant for relationships between LSPs and shippers, as well as describing the extent to which environmental activities are included in such relationships. By means of the theoretical perspective of power between supply chain actors, the thesis also sets out to further understand how power balances between LSPs and shippers can influence the extent to which they include environmental activities in their relationships with each other. Finally, the use of the theoretical perspective of coordination aims, through the analysis of coordination mechanisms, to shed light on how environmental activities are included in LSP-shipper relationships. The research in this thesis has mainly descriptive and explanatory aims, although due to the novelty of research into LSPshipper relationships in an environmental context, the research process as such is mainly exploratory. Following an abductive approach, the insights from literature are combined with empirical data from two cases studies, a homepage scan, a survey and a study of city logistics projects. Most of the applied research methods take a dual perspective of relationships between supply chain actors and thus include both LSPs and shippers. One conclusion from the research conducted for this thesis comprises the identification of environmental activities as well as a suggestion for a classification based on the activities’ role in the business between LSPs and shippers. With a starting point in the identified activities, a comparison of a market perspective and a relationship perspective of environmental activities in LSP-shipper relationships indicates that LSPs are able to fulfil the requirements set by shippers and that shippers’ requirement thus are met. The research does, however, point to a passiveness among LSPs in their relationships with shippers, who in turn would like the LSPs to be more proactive. Further, based on an analysis of power balances in LSP-shipper relationships, it is suggested that in an LSP-shipper relationship in which the shipper has a power advantage, the shipper’s environmental ambitions for logistics sets the agenda for the environmental activities in that relationship. An analysis of coordination of environmental activities in LSP-shipper relationships indicates that the mechanisms of direct supervision, which is when one actor tells the other actor in the relationship what to do, and mutual adjustment can be chosen to be used in order to include environmental activities in LSP-shipper relationships. While direct supervision is suggested to be a coordination mechanism that is easy for shippers to apply, mutual adjustment appears to hold greater potential for the development of environmental activities. Finally, these findings in combination are suggested to have implications for the coordination of environmental activities in LSP-shipper relationships. More specifically, this thesis offers a categorisation of different types of LSP-shipper relationships and the involved actors’ environmental ambition. Depending on whether the environmental ambition of the LSP and shipper in a specific relationship is high or low appears to have implications for the possibility to work towards greener supply chains for each type of relationship.

This study aims to discuss the participation of students with visual impairment in the administrative and pedagogical decisions taken by school managers. In addition, we discuss the attitude of directors towards the visually impaired, that is, as the shares are currently practiced and how they can be expanded to provide the effective inclusion of these students. To develop this work was held initially extensive literature on proposals for educational management and the process of inclusion of blind students and low vision. Applied also, a survey of the visually impaired students, to meet their needs and expectations regarding the posture of managers. Another important factor to consolidate the research was designed and implemented to interview the coordinator and the director of the college, in order to identify inclusive work them before the current educational setting. At the end of this thesis it was found that, although there is the conviviality of the visually impaired with the other students in mainstream schools is not observed their participation in the meetings with school administrators so that they can express their needs and propose measures to facilitate inclusive process

Alhammad, Mohammed. « The issues of implementing inclusion for students with Learning Difficulties in mainstream primary schools in Saudi Arabia ». Thesis, University of Lincoln, 2017. http://eprints.lincoln.ac.uk/30675/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Saudi Arabia is one of earliest Arab countries to have implemented the integration of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) (Almosa, 2008, 2010). Recently, the Ministry of Education (MoE), through the King Abdullah Public Education Development Programme, began preparing to introduce inclusion for students with SEN in practice. Thus, the current study explores potential barriers that could challenge the implementation of inclusion for male students with Learning Difficulties (LD) in mainstream primary schools. This research is timely as the issues involved with implementing inclusion remain unclear in Saudi Arabia. The issues were investigated by examining the understanding of teachers regarding the term ‘inclusion’ and exploring the factors that could challenge the implementation of inclusion from the perspective of teachers as well as through an analysis of the current practice of educating students with LD and general education students in mainstream primary schools in the Saudi context. Adopting the interpretivist paradigm, qualitative data was collected in five mainstream primary schools taken as a single case study, through interviews with thirteen teachers from a group of special education teachers and eleven teachers from a group of general education teachers. Moreover, observations of classrooms and schools and an analysis of legislative documents were used as supportive data collection methods. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. The findings showed that the majority of teachers had an understanding of the term inclusion, although a few teachers indicated their lack of knowledge and understanding of this term. Moreover, teacher preparation, in-service training, competence of teachers, teachers’ views, relationships between students, relationships between parents and teachers, human support, curriculum, teaching strategies, assessment, resources, legislations, administrative matters, number of students in classroom and infrastructure were identified as factors that could act as barriers to implementing inclusion effectively. The results of the analysis led to some recommendations for future practice; these include how to support teachers’ readiness for inclusion, improve the practice of teachers in mainstream classrooms, improve the relationships between students with and without LD, the relationships between parents and schools, and improve environmental factors, in order to make inclusion work effectively. This study contributes to knowledge of inclusive education by exploring the issues surrounding the implementation of students with learning difficulties in the Saudi context.

Hilit, Maizel. « Management of inclusion in mainstream schools : effect of the organizational culture and the leadership style of the headteacher on the operation of inclusion policy in Israel : a study of middle schools in one city ». Thesis, University of Leicester, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30898.

Résumé :
A major criterion for evaluating a society is how it treats its citizens with special needs -- especially children. Since 1988 all mainstream schools in Israel are obligated by law to include children with special needs and provide them with all the aid they are entitled to -- within a mainstream environment. All the involved bodies (governmental, educational, municipal, legal, parental, etc.) have sought the best way to this. Stemming from human rights- it was obvious that this law was right -- but in the absence of field experience, most conclusions have been the result of trial and error inside the classrooms. The need for research in inclusion practice is therefore vital. The purposes of this study were: 1. To analyze the legal requirements published by the Ministry of Education for mainstream schools. 2. To determine whether and how the law is implemented differently in different mainstream middle schools in one city. 3. To determine possible reasons for such differences, relating to the two variables already known to influence inclusiveness of schools: leadership style of the headteacher and the organizational culture of the school. The study was two-phased: in the survey phase, questionnaires were given to the educational counsellors of all 15 middle schools in the city, examining the different aspects of "shiluv" (Hebrew word for 'inclusion'). The three schools found to be most different from each other in implementing the policy went into the second case study phase. Here in-depth semi structured and specialized interviews were conducted with different role holders in the same school in order to determine why some schools manage to implement inclusion better than others? Differences were found between the 15 schools in the city in the four investigated aspects of "shiluv". The key for the differences was found to be the professionalism of all of the teaching staff: a broad knowledge, an ability to translate the aims of the school to daily work, and to conceptualize educational dilemmas. The main conclusion of this thesis is that such professionalism was shown to result from the organizational culture of the school, as a consequence of strategic management that stresses an 'integrative' type of organizational culture.
