Résumé :
One of the most captivating mythical tales in the realm of medicine is Ondine’s curse. Ondine was an eternal water spirit who became human after falling in love, marrying, and having a child with a man. When she saw her husband sleeping with another woman, she cursed him to stay awake to control his breathing, according to one version of the story. The unusual illness marked by loss of autonomic breath control while voluntary breathing remains intact was cleverly called “Ondine’s curse” during the nineteenth century. Nowadays, Ondine’s curse is most commonly connected with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome; nevertheless, it is also used to describe a variety of respiratory illnesses in the medical literature.

Résumé :
To understand the physical conditions of various gaseous systems, plasma diagnostics must be performed properly. To that end, it is equally important to have extinction correction performed properly, even before performing plasma diagnostics. This means that the physical conditions of the target sources—the very quantities to be derived via plasma diagnostics—must be known even before performing extinction correction, because the degree of extinction is determined by comparing the observed spectra of the target sources with their theoretically predicted counterparts. One way to resolve this conundrum is to perform both extinction correction and plasma diagnostics together by iteratively seeking a converged solution. In fact, if these analyses are performed self-consistently, a converged solution can be found based solely on well-calibrated line intensities, given the adopted extinction law and the RV value. However, it is still rare to find these analyses performed numerically rigorously without unnecessary analytical approximations from start to finish. In this contribution for the APN 8e conference, we would like to review this convoluted problem and sort out critical issues based on the results of our recent experiments. It appears that the convoluted theoretical and observational progresses exacerbated by the highly numerical nature of these analyses necessitated a number of analytical simplifications to make the problem analytically tractable in the pre-computer era and that such analytical simplifications still remain rampant in the literature today, even after ample computational resources became readily available. Hence, the community is encouraged to do away with this old habit of sidestepping numerical calculations that was a necessary evil in the past. This is especially true in the context of spatially-resolved 2-D spectroscopy, which obviously conflicts with the uniformity assumption often blindly inherited from 1-D spectroscopy.

Résumé :
Context. Narrowband imaging spectropolarimetry is one of the most powerful tools available to infer information about the intensity and topology of the magnetic fields present in extended plasma structures in the solar atmosphere. Aims. We describe the instrumental set-up and the observing procedure that we have developed and optimized at the Istituto Ricerche Solari Locarno in order to perform imaging spectropolarimetry. A measurement that highlights the potential of the ensuing observations for magnetic field diagnostics in solar prominences is presented. Methods. Monochromatic images of solar prominences were obtained by combining a tunable narrowband filter, based on two Fabry-Perot etalons, with a Czerny-Turner spectrograph. Linear and circular polarization were measured at every pixel of the monochromatic image with the Zurich Imaging Polarimeter, ZIMPOL. A wavelength scan was performed across the profile of the considered spectral line. The HAZEL inversion code was applied to the observed Stokes profiles to infer a series of physical properties of the observed structure. Results. We carried out a spectropolarimetric observation of a prominence, consisting of a set of quasi-monochromatic images across the He I D3 line at 5876 Å in the four Stokes parameters. The map of observed Stokes profiles was inverted with HAZEL, finding magnetic fields with intensities between 15 and 30 G and directed along the spine of the prominence, which is in agreement with the results of previous works.

AbstractPhotoionization models for AGN, including Seyfert and LINERs are discussed. These photoionization models can be used to derive emission-line diagnostics for AGN that can determine the properties of the AGN and surrounding ISM, including the relative AGN contribution to the EUV radiation field, the hardness of the AGN radiation field, the ionization state of the gas, and the metallicity of the narrow-line region. It is shown how the AGN emission-line diagnostics are expected to change with redshift. Finally, latest application of these models by the author to wide integral field spectroscopy to separate starburst and AGN contributions in composite galaxies are presented.

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper reviews the diagnostic techniques currently used to establish estimates of the physical properties of prominences. Most often the fine structure of prominences cannot be resolved. Because of this and the complex structures and the varied forms of prominences, it is difficult to establish definitive values for temperature, density, magnetic field, electric field, differential emission measure, mass flows, etc. Nevertheless, there are many useful techniques ranging from spectroscopic analysis to measurements of prominence oscillations. Most of the major techniques are reviewed in this paper, with examples of the results and an extensive bibliography. Special attention is paid to the potential diagnostic value of optically thick lines. Suggestions are made for further progress based on SOHO and other observations.

Abstract The polarization plane rotation angle of a probe signal in plasma is calculated. The estimates of the residual gas average density and the average magnitude of the magnetic field in a cesium plasma based on the effects of Faraday and Cotton–Mouton in a probe laser field have been found. It is shown that the polarization plane rotation angle depends on resonance detuning of the incident laser wave and transition frequency of medium atoms, magnetic field strength and matrix element.

Résumé :
Tularemia is a zoonotic disease with a wide geographical dissemination, and its causative agent Francisella tularensis can be used as a bioterrorism agent. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of a set of reagents “Erythrocytic immunoglobulin dry tularemia diagnosticum” (“DET-Ig”) with the help of control test strains and field material from natural tularemia foci. Materials and methods. Using the introduced erythrocyte diagnosticum, we studied the decontaminated cultures of test strains (F. tularensis Miura, F. tularensis 55, F. tularensis Schu, F. tularensis 15 NIIEG, Brucella abortus 544, B. melitensis 16-M, B. suis 1330, and Yersinia enterocolitica 64, Y. enterocolitica 178, Y. enterocolitica 383) and environmental samples suspected of containing F. tularensis. Results and discussion. It has been proven that the developed diagnosticum is specific, sensitive, and easy to use for routine diagnostics of tularemia. In the course of laboratory tests of the experimental series of the DET-Ig reagent kit, the possibility of qualitative determination of the tularemia agent in bacterial cultures, biological material and environmental samples in the reaction of indirect hemagglutination was demonstrated. Comparison of the results of use of erythrocyte diagnosticum in liquid and lyophilized forms showed the advantages of drugs after lyophilization: the possibility of transportation and long-term storage at any temperature conditions in various climatic conditions; the setting of the reaction is possible without the use of special diluents. The guaranteed storage term is set for two years (observation period). The results obtained indicate the prospects of introducing the developed drug into healthcare practice.

Résumé :
Rapid, sensitive, and timely diagnostics are essential for protecting plants from pathogens. Commonly, PCR techniques are used in laboratories for highly sensitive detection of DNA/RNA from viral, viroid, bacterial, and fungal pathogens of plants. However, using PCR-based methods for in-field diagnostics is a challenge and sometimes nearly impossible. With the advent of isothermal amplification methods, which provide amplification of nucleic acids at a certain temperature and do not require thermocyclic equipment, going beyond the laboratory has become a reality for molecular diagnostics. The amplification stage ceases to be limited by time and instruments. Challenges to solve involve finding suitable approaches for rapid and user-friendly plant preparation and detection of amplicons after amplification. Here, we summarize approaches for in-field diagnostics of phytopathogens based on different types of isothermal amplification and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. In this review, we consider a combination of isothermal amplification methods with extraction and detection methods compatible with in-field phytodiagnostics. Molecular diagnostics in out-of-lab conditions are of particular importance for protecting against viral, bacterial, and fungal phytopathogens in order to quickly prevent and control the spread of disease. We believe that the development of rapid, sensitive, and equipment-free nucleic acid detection methods is the future of phytodiagnostics, and its benefits are already visible.

Résumé :
AbstractWe discuss a new technique of studying magnetic fields in diffuse astrophysical media, e.g. interstellar and intergalactic gas/plasma. This technique is based on the angular momentum alignment of atoms and ions in their ground or metastable states. The alignment reveals itself in terms of the polarization of the absorbed and emitted light. The corresponding studies of magnetic fields can be performed with multiband spectropolarimetry, from UV, optical, to IR/radio. A unique feature of these studies is that they can reveal the 3D orientation of magnetic field. We mention several cases of interplanetary, circumstellar and interstellar magnetic fields for which the studies of magnetic fields using ground state atomic alignment effect are promising.

Résumé :
The main biological (cultural) properties of field isolates of metapneumovirus (MPV) were studied, normal and hyperimmune sera to metapneumovirus for IHR-diagnosticum (erythrocyte diagnosticum based on indirect hemagglutination reaction) were obtained, and a set of M-component components was developed. A diagnostic system of IHR (indirect hemagglutination reaction) was developed, with the help of which epizootological monitoring was carried out in poultry farms and the spread of a new infectious disease of poultry (metapneumovirus infection) among turkeys and chickens in poultry farms of Ukraine was studied. The purpose of the research is to develop a domestic diagnostic test system (erythrocyte diagnosticum for IHR) for metapneumovirus infection (MPVI) or infectious avian rhinotracheitis (IRT). As a result of the conducted researches metapneumovirus infection or infectious rhinotracheitis was established in poultry farms of 4 regions of Ukraine. The pathogen was isolated, its molecular-biological properties were studied by PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and it was established that it belongs to the genus Metapneumovirus (MPV), subtype B. The results of the epidemiological monitoring indicate that the developed erythrocyte MPV (IRT) antigen based on IHR is sensitive and specific and can be used to control the spread of metapneumovirus infection and the intensity of immunity in birds vaccinated against this disease. The production inspection in poultry farms in the western regions of Ukraine established the possibility of using IHR-diagnosticum for control of MPVI. As a result of the performed work the new domestic method of diagnostics, forecasting and protection of poultry against a metapneumovirus infection is offered. Prospects for further research are to use this erythrocyte diagnosticum based on the indirect hemagglutination reaction to monitor metapneumovirus infection of birds in poultry farms in Ukraine and determine the epizootic situation for this disease.

Résumé :
The literature includes extensive presentation of experiences relating to the application of outsourcing method in healthcare in subsequent countries. The aim of the research is to analyze the activity of medical entities of outsourcing in basic activities including laboratory diagnostics, imaging diagnostics and medical staff in 2018. The research material consisted of original questionnaires carried out in 2018 by electronic means in medical entities indicated in the National Register of Medicinal Entities. Outsourcing of laboratory diagnostics, diagnostic imaging and medical staff was investigated. The questions concerned the number of entities using outsourcing with indication of the type of services covered by outsourcing; reasons for outsourcing; advantages and disadvantages, including measuring the financial effectiveness of outsourcing; monitoring of the outsourcing partner. The study included 750 medicinal entities. Most – 72% of respondents declared using an external company in the field of laboratory diagnostics. The most common reason for the treatment entities to use outsourcing services was too high cost of maintaining their own employees, need to introduce financial savings and gaining access to the highest quality knowledge and technologies. One of the benefits of outsourcing obtained by healthcare entities is financial efficiency. The average value of the savings estimate estimated by the respondents was 15.56% with a standard deviation equal to 1.14. Medical entities evaluate external companies. The most frequent was monitoring of laboratory diagnostics (65% of responses), and the least frequently – medical personnel (27% of responses). There were two ways to conduct monitoring: informal internal control and formalized assessment based on the specificity of the service. Too high personnel costs are the reason for outsourcing if they are caused by employing people on the basis of an employment relationship. Financial savings are the leading effect of outsourcing. The most frequent monitoring of laboratory diagnostics services may be a consequence of detailed legal regulations.

Medical diagnosis has been greatly improved thanks to the development of new techniques capable of performing very sensitive detection and quantifying certain parameters. These parameters can be correlated with the presence of specific molecules and their quantity. Unfortunately, these techniques are demanding, expensive, and often complicated. On the other side, progress in other fields of science and technology has contributed to the rapid growth of nanotechnology. Although being an emerging discipline, nanotechnology has raised huge interest and expectations. Most of the enthusiasm comes from new possibilities and properties of nanomaterials. Biosensors (simple, robust, sensitive, cost-effective) combined with nanomaterials, also called nanobiosensors, are serving as bridge between advanced detection/diagnostics and daily/routine tests. Here we review some of the latest applications of nanobiosensors in diagnostics field.

Résumé :
This paper presents a MATLAB-based tutorial to conduct fault diagnosis of a rolling element bearing. While there have been so many new developments in this field, no studies have addressed the tutorial aspects in this field to help the engineers learn the concept and implement by their own effort. The three most common techniques—the autoregressive model, spectral kurtosis, and envelope analysis—are selected to demonstrate the bearing diagnosis process. Simulation signal is introduced to help understand the characteristics of fault signal and carry out the process toward the fault identification. The techniques are then applied to the two real datasets to demonstrate the practical applications, one made by the authors and the other by the Case Western Reserve University, which is known as a standard reference in testing the diagnostic algorithms.

Résumé :
Background:Electronic nose technology is being developed in order to analyse complex mixtures of volatiles in a way parallel to biologic olfaction. When applied in the field of medicine, the use of such devices should enable the identification and discrimination between different diseases. In this review, a comprehensive summary of research in medical diagnostics using electronic noses is presented. A special attention has been paid to the application of these devices and sensor technologies, in response to current trends in medicine.Methods:Peer-reviewed research literature pertaining to the subject matter was identified based on a search of bibliographic databases. The quality and relevance of retrieved papers was assessed using standard tools. Their content was critically reviewed and certain information contained therein was compiled in tabularized form. Results:The majority of reviewed studies show promising results, often surpassing the accuracy and sensitivity of established diagnostic methods. However, only a relatively small number of devices have been field tested. The methods used for sample collection and data processing in various studies were listed in a table, together with electronic nose models used in these investigations. Conclusion:Despite the fact that devices equipped with arrays of chemical sensors are not routinely used in everyday medical practice, their prospective use would solve some established issues in medical diagnostics, as well as lead to developments in prophylactics by facilitating a widespread use of non-invasive screening tests.

Résumé :
Early detection is critical to the successful treatment of life-threatening infections caused by fungal pathogens, as late diagnosis of systemic infection almost always equates with a poor prognosis. The field of fungal diagnostics has some tests that are relatively simple, rapid to perform and are potentially suitable at the point of care. However, there are also more complex high-technology methodologies that offer new opportunities regarding the scale and precision of fungal diagnosis, but may be more limited in their portability and affordability. Future developments in this field are increasingly incorporating new technologies provided by the use of new format biosensors. This overview provides a critical review of current fungal diagnostics and the development of new biophysical technologies that are being applied for selective new sensitive fungal biosensors to augment traditional diagnostic methodologies.

Résumé :
The analysis of magnetic diagnostics in next generation thermonuclear reactors is carried out. Based on this analysis, the new approach of magnetic field measurement in hard radiation and temperature condition is presented. The concept is based on data fusion concept by integration of Hall sensor and coil. High precision of magnetic field measurement insures on periodic in-situ calibration, namely, forming by the coil test magnetic field of known magnitude and measuring the signals of the Hall sensor, which are due to this test field. According to the results of measuring the test signals, the coefficients of the measuring conversion function are calculated. Main calibration issues of functionally integrated devices on Hall sensors and coils are detailed. Measurement system consists a functionally integrated 3D probe on Hall sensor and coil, analog front-end and software. Currently six sets of such devices have been installed for trial operation in JET (Oxford, GB).

Résumé :
AbstractBased on the analyses of Call K line profiles of 12 solar flares, the characteristics of the red asymmetry of Call K line are summarized. Non-LTE calculations indicated that a downward motion of plasma above the temperature minimum region (TMR) as well as a contracting motion of plasma toward TMR can well explain the red asymmetry observed at the Ki positions. The typical velocity is 10-30 km s−1. This result is consistent with the observations of metallic lines of solar flares.
