- In the laudatio given on the occasion of the conferral of the honoris causa degree granted by the University of Bari, the author outlines the scientific, academic and personal profile of Sir Bob Hepple, a major legal scholar who has made a huge contribution to the development of legal studies in the UK and internationally. His knowledge and experience in several fields of law as well as in the judiciary sphere, his engagement in public issues both at national and international levels, the many institutional functions he played in his adoptive country (Great Britain) as well as in his native one (South Africa) and his collaboration within European and extra-European institutions, are all combined in his scholarship and in his activity of research in the field of employment law and of industrial relations. The author touches upon Hepple's many scientific works and outlines his outstanding contribution in offering perspectives of investigation and techniques of protection, at times original and innovative, in keeping with the objectives of social justice which are clearly identified and pursued throughout his work.

- Lelio Pagani was a geographer well-known to the staff of this faculty. He was open to multi-disciplinary approaches which led him to work with urban planners, architects and Slavic students and he was also able to combine research with service to the community. This article gives a rapid profile of his very varied activities and is also a tribute to his human qualities, a fond memory of a friend and a colleague. A full professor at the University of Bergamo, Lelio Pagani filled an important role there: he was amongst other things the director of the department of letters, arts and multi-media studies and of the urban planning studies centre of the university, which today bears his name and which was founded by him. He brought the contribution of geography to the analysis and solution of problems in urban planning and landscape issues and to research into architectural design. He placed his specific expertise and uncommon knowledge of the province at the service of the community. He was president of the Consortium of the Regional Park of the Colli di Bergamo and of the University of Sciences, Letters and Arts, Provincial Councillor for the Environment and a leading figure in the Cultural Heritage Documentation Centre of the Province.

Nel secondo dopoguerra il paesaggio italiano è stato aggredito in maniera sistematica dalla speculazione edilizia, un fenomeno riconducibile all'assenza di pianificazione urbanistica e alla frammentazione delle competenze amministrative in materia ambientale e urbanistica. In quest'articolo si esamina un caso specifico che riguarda la Costiera amalfitana: quello del cosiddetto "mostro di Fuenti", un albergo costruito abusivamente negli anni Settanta del secolo scorso e abbattuto dopo trent'anni di lotte, proteste e azioni legali. Questo caso consente di indagare anche il ruolo cruciale delle associazioni ambientaliste che contrastarono l'ecomostro, in particolare quello di Italia Nostra. La maggior parte della documentazione consultata per la ricostruzione storica è conservata presso l'archivio di Elena Croce, custodito presso la Fondazione Biblioteca Benedetto Croce, e l'archivio di Antonio Iannello, custodito presso il Comune di Napoli.

Il saggio ricostruisce il profilo di Arturo Toscanini dal punto di vista dello stretto rapporto instauratosi, nella sua esperienza di artista, tra musica e lotta per le libertà, l’eguaglianza e i diritti dell’uomo. Il contributo intende da un lato analizzare le pratiche performative attraverso cui si manifestò il suo costante e coerente impegno attivo a favore dei valori della convivenza democratica, analizzando le prospettive di senso che orientarono le scelte di Arturo Toscanini sul palinsesto musicale e sui luoghi dove portarlo in scena. Da un altro versante, studiando in particolare i pensieri frammentari di Toscanini contro l’antisemitismo, le dittature, l’esercizio di potere sugli altri e la guerra, contenuti nel suo denso carteggio, l’indagine intende ricostruire nelle sue linee fondamentali la concezione toscaniniana di democrazia e di impegno civile dell’artista, nei difficili anni Venti e Trenta del Novecento, fino agli esiti successivi alla seconda guerra mondiale.

Nel corso degli ultimi vent'anni si è assistito ad una diffusa sperimentazione di processi partecipativi, tesi al coinvolgimento dei cittadini nelle scelte pubbliche. La letteratura sul tema inquadra tale rinascita di spazi della partecipazione nel contesto della crisi della politica e delle democrazia, in particolare di quella rappresentativa, quindi non della politica in generale e verso questioni di interesse pubblico, ma delle forme più tradizionali di partecipazione politica. Nel quadro di una “rinascita” di forme di partecipazione alternative si assiste al diffondersi di pratiche che vedono i cittadini farsi promotori di iniziative, in quartieri, strade, «micro-aree urbane», mettendo al centro la cura di beni comuni, la convivenza e la vivibilità negli spazi pubblici urbani. Allo stesso tempo, come mostrano anche diversi studi e ricerche, si assiste all'emergere di un crescente interesse da parte delle istituzioni stesse verso la promozione di percorsi tesi ad accrescere senso di responsabilità dei cittadini nella cura del territorio, delle comunità di cui fanno parte, per la promozione di vivibilità, coesione sociale. La ricerca ha quindi rilevato e messo a fuoco un terreno a tratti ibrido, sperimentale, di incontro tra cittadini che si attivano ed organizzano e istituzioni che diventano sostenitrici, ma senza guidare. La ricerca analizza in particolare tre campi di pratiche, nel Quartiere San Donato, a Bologna, anche alla luce del recente Regolamento per la collaborazione tra cittadini e amministrazione per la rigenerazione e la cura di beni comuni urbani. L'attenzione è agli orizzonti di senso della, al rapporto cittadini e istituzioni che in esse prende forma, indagando se e come possono essere lette come sperimentazioni democratiche che danno vita a relazioni dialogiche nella sfera pubblica, a pratiche di responsabilità sociale condivisa, e allo sviluppo di capacità sociali collettive.During the last 20 years there has been a large experimentation of participatory process to involve citizens in the public policy making. The literature, often frame this increasing of spaces of participation in the general context of a crisis of representative democracy and of traditional forms of political participation. In the context of an increasing of alternative forms of participation, there is a proliferation of citizens infinitives, at neighborhood level, in the streets, in “micro-urban” areas, with a focus on commons' care, livability in the urban public spaces. At the same time there is an emerging interest of the institution in the promotion of processes aiming at fostering the citizens responsibility in the care of territory, community, and for the social cohesion. The research has identify an hybrid and sometimes experiential field of encounter between active, self- organized citizens and institutions that sustain and support these citizens initiatives but without taking a lead. The research analyzed three field of practices, in the San Donato Neighborhood, in Bologna, the city where recently has been adopted a new set of rules for the collaboration between citizens and administration for the regeneration and care of urban commons'. The focus is on the meanings, on the relations between citizens and institutions emerging in these practices, training to understand if is possible to read them as a democratic experimentation able to create a public dimension, to develop social, collective capabilities and sheared social responsibility.

Why do a disproportionate number of young Italian adults stay in the family home indefinitely?
We assume such behavior becomes as an unintentional barrier to their achievement and their social commitment.
We hypothesized an association between this phenomenon and the prevailing anxious attachment among young people, their tendency to associate the separation from attachment figures to death, a low-grade of spiritual religious and personal beliefs, and a low level of happiness.
Data was collected from 1570 students attending the University of Padua, aged between 18 and 38 years, with an average of 22.11 (std 2.508).
Regarding methodology, we employed the Relationship Scales Questionnaire as a measure for the students' attachment style (Griffin, Bartholomew, 1994), the scale of moral disengagement as a measure for civil moral disengagement (Caprara, Fida, Vecchione, 2009), and the Subjective Happiness Scale as a measure for subjective happiness (Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999).
We investigated with two questions the representation of death as annihilation or passage and their psychological experience regarding their own death.
Additionally, the participants were asked if they lived on their own, in the parental home or in another residential situation.
We used some questions extracted from the WHO QOL srpb to investigate the strength of their spiritual, religious and personal beliefs.
The data supports the hypothesis. Thus we propose a pedagogical device, "Death Education,” which manages the horror vacui and separation from external security. It should induce young adults: (1) to build an indestructible inner strength with both strong and flexible beliefs, (2) to be aware and accept death as inevitable, and (3) to engage in society.La presente ricerca sorge dalla volontà di comprendere le cause del fenomeno tutto italiano chiamato ‘famiglia lunga’ (Scabini & Donati, 1988) caratterizzato dalla prolungata permanenza dei giovani adulti presso la famiglia d’origine. L’ipotesi di partenza implica un’associazione tra tale fenomeno e la prevalenza di un attaccamento ansioso nei giovani; la loro tendenza a connettere alla morte la separazione dalle figure d’attaccamento; una forte ansia nei confronti della morte, percepita come la fine di tutto; deboli convinzioni personali, spirituali e religiose; un basso livello di felicità . Nella ricerca quali-quantitativa sono stati coinvolti 1570 studenti dell’Università di Padova di età compresa tra i 18 e i 38 anni, con una media di 22,11 (std. 2,508). Lo stile d’attaccamento è stato misurato con il Relationship Scales Questionnaire (Griffin, Bartholomew, 1994). Il disimpegno civile morale è stato indagato tramite la scala del disimpegno morale (Caprara, Fida, Vecchione, 2009). Due domande hanno consentito di investigare, da un lato, la rappresentazione della morte come annientamento o passaggio, dall’altro il vissuto psicologico relativo alla stessa. È stato chiesto ai partecipanti se abitassero per conto proprio, presso la casa dei genitori o in un’altra situazione residenziale. È stato somministrato il WHO QOL srpb per indagare la forza delle loro convinzioni spirituali, religiose e personali. La felicità soggettiva è stata misurata attraverso il Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999). Alla generale conferma dell’ipotesi di partenza da parte dei risultati è seguita una proposta pedagogica, che si rifà all’ampio concetto di Death Education e ad altri affini dispositivi educativi (quali educazione alla creatività e psicodramma) e implica l’educazione alla gestione del vuoto e alla separazione dalle sicurezze esterne, con il fine ultimo di indurre i soggetti a costruire una forza interiore indistruttibile, declinantesi in solide e al tempo stesso flessibili convinzioni personali; nella consapevolezza e accettazione della ineludibile realtà della morte; in un considerevole impegno nelle dimensioni della civitas/communitas e dei rapporti umani.

La storiografia statunitense, a partire dagli anni Cinquanta, vide l’affermarsi di una nuova interpretazione della politica estera americana. Archiviata la storia diplomatica come storia dei trattati o storia delle interazioni delle élites dominanti, abbandonata una visione incentrata sull’equilibrio di potenza, il dibattito storiografico si arricchì della cosiddetta interpretazione «revisionista», antitetica rispetto a quella che, fino a quel momento, aveva predominato. Soggetto di analisi storica restava sempre lo Stato ma l’enfasi maggiore era posta sui fattori economici che ne influenzavano l’azione: si metteva in rilievo l’interazione tra l’interesse privato e il soggetto statale. Capofila di questa nuova scuola fu William Appleman Williams.
Questa ricerca si pone l’obiettivo di delineare il contesto storiografico dal quale emersero gli studi di Williams e di cui egli ne roviesciò alcuni assunti fondamentali. Si intende tracciare il suo percorso intellettuale – storiografico e pubblico – al fine di restituire la complessità di un personaggio che divenne un vero e proprio «intellettuale pubblico». I quesiti, a cui questa ricerca vuole dar risposta riguardano l’evoluzione del percorso intellettuale di Williams tanto in ambito storiografico quanto, più in generale, in quello pubblico; il contributo alla ridefinizione dell’identità statunitense e del suo ruolo internazionale; il lascito della sua riflessione nella storiografia.
Prendendo le mosse dall’idea di frontiera proposta da Turner, Williams sostenne che la fine dell’espansione territoriale «interna» aveva obbligato gli Stati Uniti a cercare nuovi mercati per il proprio surplus. Era stata tale necessità a catalizzare la Open Door Diplomacy, guidata da ragioni economiche, che presto identificarono l’interesse nazionale per trasformarsi in una vera e propria ideologia nel XX secolo.L’esito di tale politica estera fu la creazione di un impero non più territoriale ma frutto dell’espansione economica. E proprio questa riflessione sull’impero influenzò, negli anni Sessanta, la protesta studentesca che chiese un ripensamento del ruolo internazionale degli Stati Uniti.The early Fifties saw the emergence of a new synthesis of the American diplomatic history, advanced by a young historian, William Appleman Williams. In the midst of what was called “consensus history” he proposed a different interpretation of American foreign policy, focusing on economic factors. Archiving a diplomatic history conceived as history of treaties or as the interactions between leading élites, abandoning a vision conceiving of the balance of power as the inspiring principle of States’ actions, Williams placed major emphasis on the interplay between the private interest and the State in explaining Us foreign relations. The aim of this dissertation is threefold: - To analyze the evolution of Williams’ intellectual career both in the historiographical field and in the public one, where he could be considered a “public intellectual”; - To evaluate Williams’ contributions to the redefinition of Us identity and of its international role during the Sixties; - To delineate the legacies of Williams’ ideas and interpretations within the historiographical field. The evolution of Williams’ intellectual career is interpreted in terms of an analysis of his major books: The Tragedy of American Diplomacy, Contours of American History and Empire As a Way of Life. In all those volumes, it is possible to delineate the main ideas of Williams’ interpretation of US foreign policy, that is, the maintenance of domestic democracy and prosperity was assured by and imperial drive. Nonetheless, I will also analyze his writings both on journals and on newspapers. Part of the thesis is dedicated to the connection between Williams and the student movement of the Sixties. He could be considered an inspiratory of the young dissenters who claim, as Williams did, a new definition of United States’ identity.

Archiving a diplomatic history conceived as history of treaties or as the interactions between leading élites, abandoning a vision conceiving of the balance of power as the inspiring principle of States’ actions, Williams placed major emphasis on the interplay between the private interest and the State in explaining Us foreign relations. The aim of this dissertation is threefold: - To analyze the evolution of Williams’ intellectual career both in the historiographical field and in the public one, where he could be considered a “public intellectual”; - To evaluate Williams’ contributions to the redefinition of Us identity and of its international role during the Sixties; - To delineate the legacies of Williams’ ideas and interpretations within the historiographical field. The evolution of Williams’ intellectual career is interpreted in terms of an analysis of his major books: The Tragedy of American Diplomacy, Contours of American History and Empire As a Way of Life. In all those volumes, it is possible to delineate the main ideas of Williams’ interpretation of US foreign policy, that is, the maintenance of domestic democracy and prosperity was assured by and imperial drive. Nonetheless, I will also analyze his writings both on journals and on newspapers. Part of the thesis is dedicated to the connection between Williams and the student movement of the Sixties. He could be considered an inspiratory of the young dissenters who claim, as Williams did, a new definition of United States’ identity.

Cette thèse propose une étude sur un des écrivains italiens contemporains les plus connus (en Italie et à l’étranger), Antonio Tabucchi (1943-2012). Dans cette thèse nous tenterons de comprendre deux topoi au sein de l’œuvre tabucchienne : le rapport auteur-personnage-lecteur et l’engagement de l’écrivain, qui sont étudiés à la lumière de son travail journalistique et littéraire. Dans la deuxième partie on analyse l’œuvre tabucchienne à la lumière de l’influence de Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) et Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). Une autre remarque importante est que l’imagination et l’engagement de l’écrivain, forment un binôme dans l’œuvre tabucchienne. Un autre sujet exploré est comment l’engagement de l’écrivain se présente dans les articles que Tabucchi a écrit pour plusieurs journaux en Italie et en Europe. À travers cette recherche on a essayé de remplir le vide laissé dans un panorama italo-français dans lequel, malgré les nombreuses études sur l’œuvre tabucchienne, souvent différents aspects analysés dans cette recherche avaient été mis de côté. In modern societies two processes seem to be carried on simultaneously. On one side, the traditional shape assumed by historical knowledge seems dissolving. On the other side, another exigence has to be affirmed: the necessity to remember, to share their memories. This is a pattern linked to the limits and contradictions which characterised the relationship between present and past. Tracing the steps thanks to which the anti-fascist Resiatance have been taking place in Italy is useful for defining the strong ethic and politic relevance making it a precious tool for democratic convivence

The history of built environment reflects the rise and fall of political systems, their conflicts, social contradictions and ultimately, the state of being of particular civic societies over time. Former symbols of power, such as ancient monuments, palaces and churches still express their symbolic, economic, cultural and political value which constituted in different ages the motivation for their being. Today these are replaced by new symbols of contemporary economic forces which through skyscrapers express global tendency and power shifts. While such edifices are recognizable embodiments of power and political systems of their time, less visible, yet equally potent, are the shifts and voids in power relations. To fully comprehend the role of architecture in expressing and supporting power structures, it is important to question the concept of architecture as a mere act of presence (construction) and consider instead the void and its complementary aspects: absence, erasure and ideological need for demolition, as expressions of power. This paper considers power within the parameters of void, which extend beyond the notion of “tabula rasa” that has characterized many urban transformations. By considering the emblematic case of Via dell’ Impero, analyzing various ‘iconic’ works of architecture for their role in expressing power of institutions and individuals, and identifying dispersion as an underhanded way of exercising power, this paper proposes a more complex reading of urban transformations. It offers moments of reflection and a shift in research focus in terms of how the void is used today to express and support present power relations.
