Résumé :
Power quality (PQ) has become a more important issue recently due to the use of more sophisticated and sensitive equipment. Medical devices, telecommunication servers and equipment, manufacturing and domestic appliances rely on a good supply of power. This paper presents the review of the power quality in power system. Power quality has always been important for customers, but with increasing applications of electronic loads and controllers sensitive to the power quality, the subject has attracted renewed interest in recent times. Power quality encompasses several aspects: harmonics, over voltage, flicker voltage sags and swells interruptions etc. A major factor contributing to the importance of the quality of power is the deregulation of the power industry. Customers will demand higher levels of power quality to ensure the proper and continued operation of sensitive equipment and processes.

Infrared radiation drying being one of the innovative drying methods was chosen to perform comparative study at different infrared power levels at 50, 62, 74 and 88 W. Quality attributes such as protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate, vitamin C content, solubility index and colour of infrared dried bee pollen samples were evaluated. The infrared power has a significant effect on the drying and quality characteristics especially colour. Drying time was reduced from 170 to 50 min when the infrared power level increased from 50 W to 88 W. Morphological changes on the surface of bee pollen grains increased with increasing the infrared power. The bee pollen infrared dried at 50 W retained its quality characteristics better than the bee pollens infrared dried at other power levels.

Résumé :
In electrical power systems, one of the most essential parameters is a system signal with stable fundamental amplitude and frequency. Some disturbances have a negative impact on this stability, yet. These disturbances, known as power quality disturbances (PQDs), encompass phenomena such as sag, interruption, swell, harmonics, flicker, interharmonics, spike, notch, and transients. PQDs can ariseindividually or in some combinations. They pose unpredictable and variable effects on system componentsgiving rise to destructive outcomes. Acquisition of real-world datasets related to these disturbances is challenging due to the randomness and complex nature of power systems. Therefore, the importance of conducting experimental studies to investigate and analyze PQDs has significantly increased. This study aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers investigating PQDs. It provides a guidance, offering insights into some types of PQDs and their characteristics. This paper supports researchers in understanding and addressing the challenges based on PQDs by presenting knowledge about these disturbances and their impacts. Recognizing the significance of experimental studies, the compilation includes methodologies, experimental setups, and tools employed for studying PQDs. It emphasizes the necessity for experimental datasets to enhance research in this field and highlights the importance of PQD investigation.

Résumé :
This paper is an overview of some of the main issues in photovoltaic based distributed generation (PVDG). A discussion of the harmonic distortion produced by PVDG units is presented. The maximum permissible penetration level of PVDG in distribution system is also considered. The general procedures of optimal planning for PVDG placement and sizing are also explained in this paper. The result of this review shows that there are different challenges for integrating PVDG in the power systems. One of these challenges is integrated system reliability whereas the amount of power produced by renewable energy source is consistent. Thus, the high penetration of PVDG into grid can decrease the reliability of the power system network. On the other hand, power quality is considered one of the challenges of PVDG whereas the high penetration of PVDGs can lead to more harmonic propagation into the power system network. In addition to that, voltage fluctuation of the integrated PVDG and reverse power flow are two important challenges to this technology. Finally, protection of power system with integrated PVDG is one of the most critical challenges to this technology as the current protection schemes are designed for unidirectional not bidirectional power flow pattern.

Résumé :
This bachelor thesis examines the impacts of installed microgeneration of PV power in the distribution grid. The thesis examines the selected distribution grids power quality and how it is affected in terms of exceeding currents, voltages and reverse power flows and how the future trend of microgeneration of PV power will develop. A case study is made on Gotland with the support of the distribution grid owner, GEAB. Three of GEAB's distribution grids with different customer configurations and grid structures are being used to create different case scenarios. The production from the PV plants is calculated with production data from a project that GEAB performed with PV plants but dismantled in 2016. The Newton-Raphson power flow method is used to run the simulations of the grids with different amount of installed PV power. The results show that exceeding maximum current is the first parameter to limit and affect the power quality for all grids. After this the three grids can handle different amounts of installed PV power with respect of the remaining parameters. The simulations also show that losses in the grid are reduced due to installations of PV plants, although their small magnitude do not make them a significant aspect to consider when evaluating microgeneration in the distribution grid. When comparing to future scenarios it is concluded that the grids are dimensioned to handle a various amount of installed microgeneration without the power quality being affected.  To analyse the sensitivity of the results a sensitivity analysis is performed on the slack node voltage by alternating the voltage level. The result indicates that a higher slack node voltage gives more exceeding voltages for the city power grid and the two rural grids.

Résumé :
This project entitled 'The Economic Impact of Poor Power Quality to New Zealand' aims to identify the most problematic and costly power quality issues for industry and residential customers in New Zealand. The economic cost or poor power quality will be used by the EPECentre in their future power quality work. Some recommendations are included from the researcher where appropriate. Society is becoming more dependent on computers and digital circuitry. Industry, commercial and residential users are now dependent on a reliable, high-quality electrical power source to ensure these devices are operational. Electricity supply, however, is not perfect and when electronic equipment encounters electricity that is not of a regular sinusoidal waveform, loss of performance or failure may occur. These issues are termed power quality issues and include: • Voltage sags • Surges • Transients • Harmonics • Momentary power interruptions

Résumé :
Wind generation is one of the most successful sources of renewable energy for the production of electrical energy. Wind power offers relatively high capacities, with generation costs that are becoming competitive with conventional energy sources. However, a major problem to its effective use as a power source is the fact that it is both intermittent and diffuse as wind speed is highly variable and site-specific. This is translated in large voltage and frequency excursions and dynamically unstable situations when fast wind power changes. Very high wind speeds will result in sudden loss of wind generator production. The requirement to ensure that sufficient spinning reserve capacity exists within the system to compensate for sudden loss of generation becomes crucial. From the utilities operators’point of view, the primary objective is the security of the system, followed by the quality of the supplied power.

In order to guard the system security and quality of supply and retain acceptable levels, a maximum allowed wind power penetration (wind margin) is normally assumed by the operators. Very conservative methods are used to assess the impact of wind power and the consequences turn to under-exploitation of the wind power potential in a given region. This thesis presents the study of actual methods of wind power assessment, divided into three parts:

1. Part I: Impact on the Security of Power Systems

2. Part II: Impact on the Power Quality

3. Part III: Impact on the Dynamic Security of Power Systems

This work presents the evaluation of grid connected photovoltaic systems\' impact on low voltage electrical grid, in order to identify the impacts and demonstrate that it can be controlled. The study consisted of a theoretical evaluation and of a case study of photovoltaic generation inclusion considering aspects of grid power quality, resulting load curve, lifespan of transformers and demand side management. The results showed that the inclusion of photovoltaic generation in low voltage network changes the load curve of the consumer unit, but these changes can be controlled by demand side management using energy storage. The results also showed that the photovoltaic generation also affects the voltage and the power factor of the consumer unit, but these changes can be controlled by the production of reactive power by the inverter. Furthermore, it was found that the photovoltaic generation does not affect the voltage harmonic distortion of the mains and it increases the lifespan of the transformer.

Progressive lenses (PL) are designed to provide continuous vision at all distances by means a progressive change in spherical power from upper to lower zones. In this thesis, we measure the spatially resolved aberrations and the visual quality of PLs. In addition to astigmatism, third order aberrations, coma and trefoil, are also found in the PLs, but the impact of these aberrations on visual performance is limited. The logarithm of metrics on the PSF of the entire system eye plus PL are the parameters that best predict the visual acuity. There is not a significant improvement of visual acuity through the different zones of the PLs during the first week of adaptation. The current designs of PLs are somehow similar to a waterbed, with the aberrations, mainly astigmatism, being the water: they can be moved but they cannot be eliminated.

Van, der Westhuizen Bernard Cornelius. « Impact of coal quality on equipment lifetime at coal-fired power stations ». Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79670.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
With the export of coal being more lucrative than selling coal to South African power producers, power station operators might consider accepting lower-quality coal. While the impact lower quality coal has on cycle efficiency is understood, the influence it has on equipment reliability and lifetime is often not understood. This study focusses on addressing the question of how different characteristics of coal influences different damage mechanisms of common power station equipment. The results are translated into a reference framework that can be used when coal quality variation is expected. The influence of coal calorific value and ash content has on air-heater element erosion was evaluated. This was accomplished by establishing a correlation between calorific value and ash content of coal from a specific colliery; this was then used to calculate the mass of fly ash and flue gas produced when burning enough coal to satisfy the boiler load. An erosion model was then used along with historical coal quality and air heater erosion history to develop and fit a model for full boiler load. The model was verified against data not used during the development of the model, and a seemingly good prediction was made when compared to the measured result. The calorific value of the coal in the model was varied for a hypothetical situation; this indicated that as calorific value decreases the erosion of air heater elements increases. The influence abrasiveness index has on mill liners was also investigated as part of this study. Historical liner ultrasonic thickness and coal abrasiveness index results were used to fit a mathematical formula. The results indicate that for the ball mills at the power station used in the case study, the abrasiveness index did not have a significant influence on the wear rate of mill liners. The relationship was established to be directly proportional to increased abrasiveness index resulting in an increased wear rate. The final two case studies that form part of this overall study were focussed on boiler temperature variations as a result of variation in coal calorific value and establishing the impact coal “hang-ups” have on the lifetime of a drum reclaimer. The first of these two case studies was completed by creating a mathematical thermo-hydraulic model of a hypothetical boiler and calculating the effect calorific value would have on the boiler temperature distribution. The results were then compared to temperature-related damage mechanisms; the comparison indicated that a variation in calorific value, whether up or down from the designed value would be negative for overall boiler health. The final case study was not completed due to the unavailability of related equipment. A full description of the envisaged study is provided.

Résumé :
AbstractSleep is critical for a healthy, engaged and satisfying life. A large proportion of our lives is spent asleep, and a large proportion of our housing, resources, expenditure, and attention are dedicated to it. Good sleep strongly predicts better outcomes across a very broad range of life-long health, social, and industrial indices. Poor sleep has very significant and costly impacts upon physical and mental health (including metabolic health, depression, and anxiety), learning and education outcomes, and work-related outcomes (including stress, absenteeism, safety and performance). The social importance of good sleep can be seen in robust associations between sleep and loneliness, isolation, perceived social support, family and interpersonal relationships, and broader community participation and engagement. The availability and power of new sleep tracking devices mean that access and opportunity for satisfactory, satisfying, and sufficient sleep could be greatly increased. In this Chapter, we discuss the importance of sleep for quality of life and the limitations of existing monitoring technologies. We then introduce new tracking technologies and consider their benefits as well as potential pitfalls.

Résumé :
Distributed Energy Resources (DER) have the potential to supply a significant portion of increased power demands in California and the rest of the US. Distributed generation is characterized by many stationary power generators that are distributed throughout an urban air basin. In contrast, central-generation sources are typically located outside the basin. As a result, distributed generation may lead to increased pollutant emissions within an urban air basin, which could adversely affect air quality. The present project develops a systematic approach for characterizing the installation of DER in an urban air basin and simulates the potential air quality impacts using a state-of-the-art three-dimensional computer model. The assessment of the air quality impacts associated with DER is made in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB) of California for the year 2010. Initial results suggest that DER characterization can be systematically applied to urban air basins, and that realistic DER implementation in SoCAB by the year 2010 only slightly affects concentrations of ozone and particulate matter in the basin.

Résumé :
Distributed Energy Resources (DER) have the potential to meet a significant portion of increased power demands of the future. DER applications can potentially provide benefits in electrical reliability and power quality, in addition to reducing total energy costs in combined cooling, heating and power (CHP) applications. However, the shift from a central generation paradigm to distributed generation results in different emissions characteristics and profiles from both a spatial and temporal perspective. Distributed generation is characterized by many sparsely distributed stationary sources within an urban air-shed compared to central generation where emissions sources are much larger, but typically located outside the air-shed in more remote locations. As a result, high market adoption of fuel-driven (non-renewable) distributed generation (DG) technologies, such as reciprocating engines and microturbines, may influence the air quality within a region. The present paper estimates air quality impacts for a representative distributed generation scenario in the South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB) of California. Simulations are based on the year 2010 with comparison to a base case scenario with no DG emissions. The DG scenarios are developed for a reasonable percentage of power met by DG, representative spatial distribution and temporal operation, and a mix of DG technologies and emissions factors. The resultant emissions inventory for each DG scenario is then provided as input to a three-dimensional air quality model including detailed atmospheric chemistry and transport for simulation of the SoCAB. Preliminary air quality results suggest that there will be an air quality impact, that the impacts will not be uniform throughout the air-shed, and that individual criteria pollutant concentrations may either rise or fall with the introduction of DG.

Résumé :
Flooding is a major source of concern for Texas’ coastal communities. It affects the quality of infrastructure, the lives of citizens, and the ecological systems upon which coastal communities in Texas rely. To plan for and mitigate the impacts of flooding, Texas coastal communities may implement land use tools such as zoning, drainage utility systems, eminent domain, exactions, and easements. Additionally, these communities can benefit from understanding how flooding affects water quality and the tools available to restore water bodies to healthy water quality levels. Finally, implementing additional programs for education and ecotourism will help citizens develop knowledge of the impacts of flooding and ways to plan and mitigate for coastal flooding. Land use tools can help communities plan for and mitigate flooding. Section III addresses zoning, a land use tool that most municipalities already utilize to organize development. Zoning can help mitigate flooding, drainage, and water quality issues, which, Texas coastal communities continually battle. Section IV discusses municipal drainage utility systems, which are a mechanism available to municipalities to generate dedicated funds that can help offset costs associated with providing stormwater management. Section V addresses land use and revenue-building tools such as easements, eminent domain, and exactions, which are vital for maintaining existing and new developments in Texas coastal communities. Additionally, Section VI addresses conservation easements, which are a flexible tool that can enhance community resilience through increasing purchase power, establishing protected legal rights, and minimizing hazardous flood impacts. Maintaining good water quality is important for sustaining the diverse ecosystems located within and around Texas coastal communities. Water quality is regulated at the federal level through the Clean Water Act. As discussed in Section VII, the state of Texas is authorized to implement and enforce these regulations by implementing point source and nonpoint source pollutants programs, issuing permits, implementing stormwater discharge programs, collecting water quality data, and setting water quality standards. The state of Texas also assists local communities with implementing restorative programs, such as Watershed Protection Programs, to help local stakeholders restore impaired water bodies. Section VIII addresses ecotourism and how these distinct economic initiatives can help highlight the importance of ecosystem services to local communities. Section VIX discusses the role of education in improving awareness within the community and among visitors, and how making conscious decisions can allow coastal communities to protect their ecosystem and protect against flooding.

Résumé :
We conduct a randomized controlled trial in Mexico City to determine willingness to pay (WTP) for SMS air quality alerts and to study the effects of air quality alerts, reminders, and a reusable N95 mask on air pollution information and avoidance behavior. At baseline, we elicit WTP for the alerts service after revealing whether the household will receive an N95 mask and participant compensation, but before revealing whether they will receive alert or reminder services. While we observe no significant impact of mask provision on WTP, higher compensation increases WTP, suggesting a possible cash-on-hand constraint. The perception of high pollution days prior to the survey is positively correlated with WTP, but the presence of actual high pollution days is not correlated with WTP. Follow-up survey data demonstrate that the alerts treatment increases reporting of receiving air pollution information via SMS, a high pollution day in the past week, and staying indoors on the most recent perceived high pollution day. However, we observe no significant effect on the ability to correctly identify which specific days had high pollution. Similarly, households that received an N95 mask are more likely to report utilizing a mask with filter in the past two weeks, but we observe no effect on using a filter mask on the specific days with high particulate matter. Although we nd that air quality alerts increased the salience of air quality and avoidance behavior, these results illustrate the difficulty that information treatments face in overcoming perceptions to effectively reduce exposure to air pollution.

Résumé :
We estimate the equilibrium effects of a public school grant program administered through school councils in Pakistani villages with multiple public and private schools and clearly defined catchment boundaries. The program was randomized at the village-level, allowing us to estimate its causal impact on the market. Four years after the start of the program, test scores were 0.2 sd higher in public schools. We find evidence of an education multiplier: test scores in private schools were also 0.2 sd higher in treated markets. Consistent with standard models of product differentiation, the education multiplier is greater for those private schools that faced a greater threat to their market power. Accounting for private sector responses increases the program’s cost effectiveness by 85 percent and affects how a policymaker would target spending. Given that markets with several public and private schools are now pervasive in low- and middle-income countries, prudent policy requires us to account for private sector responses to public policy, both in their design and in their evaluation.
