The aim of this research is to atain knowledge on immigrant´s health related problems and to identify their dificulties when acesing health care services. The article describes immigrant´s dificulties when acesing health care services that are visiting the health ofice at a National Immigrant Support Centre.Design: : A qualitative study was conducted, analysing available documentation and observing the health isues dealt with at the National Immigrant Support Centre’s (CNAI) Health Ofice. The 148 cases are mainly immigrants coming from Portuguese speaking African countries for health purposes. Immigrants from Brazil have more restricted aces, and feel discrimination on the part of the services. Immigrants from Eastern Europe come in search of information and have communication dificulties. Obstacles are related to the lack of knowledge of the law, but also to the failure of puting the law into practice. The ofice has had a great demand of users seeking information and in acesingthe health care system.Results: The cases analysed are mainly nationals from Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PSAC), Brazil and countries in Eastern Europe. The majority of the immigrants coming from PSAC are patients receiving treatment under international Cooperation Agreements requesting financial and social support. Immigrants from Brazil have more restricted aces and feel greater discrimination on the part of the services. New Labour Migrants from Eastern Europe, on the other hand, come in search of information and are known to have communication dificulties.Conclusions: Legislation in Portugal provides aces to health care to al citizens, regardles of their legal condition and origin. However, some immigrants have had significant dificulties with aces to Portugal’s National Health Service. The obstacles are not only related to the lack of legal knowledge, but also to the failure of puting the law into practice, which requires atention by the institutionresponsible for efective and comprehensive coordination. The ofice has had a great demand of users seeking information, who, above al, wish to solve their problems and dificulties in acesing the health care system.

This study aimed to analyze the main adjustment difficulties encountered by temporary immigrants and to identify the ways in which organizations received them and implemented integration strategies. Using a sample of three human resource managers, six supervisors and 50 immigrants of varying nationalities, the results revealed that although immigrants claimed to feel largely integrated in the new society and the organizations where they worked, the supervisors argued that integration and adjustment practices directed at immigrant workers were almost non-existent. The practices carried out by the organizations were primarily related to the work aspect, alongside a degree of support with bureaucratic issues and in some cases the provision of Portuguese language courses. Studies on rural immigrants are scarce, especially with regard to organizational integration practices. Managing a diverse workforce is one of the great challenges of modern organizations, hence immigrant workers’ integration is critical not only for the individuals themselves but also for the performance and success of the companies as a whole.

International studies indicate that Chinese immigrants face barriers when trying to access healthcare in the host country. The aim of this study was to identify the barriers that Chinese immigrants face when accessing the Portuguese National Health Service. An observational, cross-sectional and quantitative study was carried out via a bilingual Portuguese/Mandarin self-completed paper questionnaire was applied. The study population consisted of individuals with Chinese nationality who were residing in mainland Portugal for at least one year and aged 18 years or over. A total of 304 individuals answered the questionnaire. The results show that 284 (93.4%) of the participants had already sought healthcare in Portugal. The participants identified language difficulties and health professionals’ lack of knowledge of Chinese cultural habits as the most significant barriers to accessing healthcare in Portugal. Of a total of 165 participants who sought healthcare in China, confidence in treatment outcomes and health professionals’ knowledge of Chinese cultural habits were the reasons given by 151 (91.5%) individuals. This study reveals the existence of linguistic and cultural barriers that can condition the access of the Chinese immigrant population to healthcare systems. Immigrants’ access to healthcare can be promoted via policies that contribute to proficiency in the Portuguese language and medical literacy among the Chinese immigrant population. It can also be promoted by raising the awareness of health professionals to Chinese cultural habits.

ABSTRACTObjetive: to take a reflexion about the support and primary helth care given to immigrants in Portugal. Method: it was carried out a literature review of primary helth care to the immigrants in Portugal. First, in online journals, using the High Wire, Google Academic database, and by insert the following terms: primary health care and immigrant. Second, papers on press journals were used, once online papers were not enought. Results: the good manners on host practice promotes the adaptation and the integration of immigrant populations and also it prevents xenofobic behaviors. Portugal has been classified, by the its European partners, as a country were the programs implemented for practices on integration and adaptation of the immigrant population are efficient and also as a country with a legislation that promotes those good practices. Conclusion: health care in Portugal are focused in the majorities, so that it is urgent to reorganize health care, having in mind the minorities and the resident populations that usually remain outside the health care. Thus, health care professionals, namely nurses should promote culturally competent heath support. Recorreu-se em primeiro lugar a publicações on line, usando como descritores Cuidados Primários de Saúde e Imigrante através da base de dados High Wire e Google – Acadêmico. E finalmente recorreu-se a literatura impressa dado que os artigos on line não eram suficientes para debater o assunto. Resultados: o constante trabalho de boas práticas de acolhimento promove a adaptação e integração das populações imigrantes e previne comportamentos de xenofobia. Portugal foi considerado pelos seus parceiros europeus como tendo implementado programas eficazes de integração e adaptação da população imigrante e como um país onde a legislação promove boas práticas. Conclusão: os cuidados de saúde em Portugal estão centrados em maiorias, é urgente que se reorganizem tendo como objetivo as minorias e as franjas da população que habitualmente ficam de fora dos cuidados de saúde. Assim, os profissionais de saúde nomeadamente os enfermeiros devem promover cuidados culturalmente competentes. Introduction:There are seldom mental health studies in Portugal about immigrant populations, particularly in groups belonging to non-Portuguese speaking minorities. The recent phenomenon of emergence of new migratory flows coming from Eastern Europe countries, which traditionally had no cultural or linguistic contact with the host country and the implications of this migratory process in the mental health status of this population, is the centre of this investigation.Objectives:This study aims to perform a socio-demographic characterization, identify the main health problems and health surveillance patterns of the immigrant population from Eastern Europe countries in Portugal. It also aims to assess the stress vulnerability and ths mental health status of this population.Methods:The study was conducted in immigrant local centres from January 31st 2005 to March 31st 2006 and focused on 566 Eastern Europe immigrants residing in several regions of Portugal, 296 males and 270 females. We used the 23 QVS (Vaz Serra, 2000); GHQ-28 (Goldberg & Hillier, 1979); SSQ6 (Saranson, Saranson & Pierce, 1987) and a Socio-demographic questionnaire.Results:From the 566 individuals in sample one; we conclude that this population is predominantly male, in active young age, with high academic qualifications.Regarding mental health status, 10,4% of the inquired immigrants presented psychiatric pathology assessed by the cutting point of GHQ-28 and 54.9% presented stress vulnerability determined by the cutting point of 23QVS. We verified a statistically relevant correlation between stress vulnerability and the levels of mental health of the surveyed population.

This study aimed to assess the care received and the barriers faced by immigrants and Portuguese pregnant women in Portugal. This is an exploratory qualitative study, resorting to applying semi-structured interviews to 60 immigrant and 22 Portuguese women. Content analysis supported by QSR Nvivo10 program was used. The study was approved by an Ethics Committee. The results showed four categories related to affective dimensions-relational, cognitive, technical-instrumental and health care policy for pregnant women. As for the barriers in health care, these were mentioned by some of the expectant mothers, especially immigrant women. Almost all, both immigrant and Portuguese, pregnant women were satisfied with the health care.

Increased migration has led to increased prejudice towards immigrant populations. This study aims to analyse attitudes towards immigration among student nurses in three universities, two in Spain and one in Portugal. Methodology: A descriptive, transversal, prospective study was carried out among student nurses (n = 624), using the Attitude towards Immigration in Nursing scale. Results: Nursing students showed some positive attitudes towards immigration, such as that immigrants should have the right to maintain their customs or that immigrants should have free access to healthcare and education, in contrast to some negative attitudes, such as that crime rates have increased due to immigration or that immigrants receive more social welfare assistance than natives. Significant differences in attitudes were revealed between students from the three universities. Discussion: Training in transcultural nursing is necessary for all nursing students in order to reduce negative attitudes towards the immigrant population and increase the awareness and sensitivity of future healthcare staff in caring for patients of all backgrounds.

A União Europeia depara-se com a falta de trabalhadores qualificados devido ao crescimento da idade média da sua população. Durante as últimas décadas, enquanto a América do Norte atraía muitos trabalhadores qualificados, a Europa era também um destino de imigração, mas devido à falta de uma política coerente de imigração muitos eram imigrantes ilegais que por sua vez não eram trabalhadores altamente qualificados. Tem havido muita pesquisa sobre a imigração na Europa e em Portugal, mas nenhuma focou o assunto da re-emigração de trabalhadores estrangeiros qualificados para fora de Portugal. O estudo que aqui se apresenta foca-se nos investigadores / académicos que vieram para Portugal por um período de tempo, e visa identificar os factores que levaram estes académicos a estabelecerem-se em Portugal ou a ir para um terceiro país. À medida que estes académicos vêm para Portugal para fazer as suas pesquisas para o seu Doutoramento e Pós-doutoramento eles são considerados trabalhadores qualificados, que podem ser um recurso útil para o mercado Português após terem terminado os seus estudos. Para executar esta pesquisa foi usado um questionário na web que foi aplicado a 46 académicos iranianos e indianos e foram feitas entrevistas aleatórias. O questionário possui uma grande variedade de questões que podem ser úteis para outros estudos similares. Através dos resultados deste estudo, foram revelados os principais factores que contribuíram para a tomada de decisão dos investigadores (estabelecerem-se em Portugal ou ir para um terceiro país). Estes factores ajudam na construção de um sistema de avaliação no que respeita à aceitação de imigrantes qualificados baseado naqueles que têm mais probabilidades de integração. ABSTRACT: The European Union is confronted to the lack of skilled workers due to the increasing of the average age of its population. During recent decades, while North America was attracting many skilled workers, Europe was also a destination for immigrants, but due to the lack of a consistent immigration policy, many of these were illegal immigrants and thus were not highly educated workers. Much research has been conducted about immigration in Europe and Portugal, but none has focused on the subject of re-emigration of non- Portuguese skilled workers out of Portugal. This study focuses on Iranian and Indian academics who have come to Portugal for a period of time, and attempts to identify the factors which impact on the decision of these academics to settle in Portugal or to re-emigrate to a third country. As these academics came to Portugal to do their PhD and post-doctoral research, they are considered skilled workers who can be a useful resource for the Portuguese market after finishing their studies. To carry out this research, a web-based questionnaire was used to investigate 46 Iranian and Indian academics and random interviews were conducted. The questionnaire covers a broad range of questions which can be useful for similar studies. From the results of this study the main factors contributing to the decision making of academics (to settle in Portugal or to re-emigrate to a third country) was revealed. These factors may help in the design of an evaluation system for accepting skilled immigrants in Portugal based on those who have more probability of integration.

Portugal has experienced various structural changes in recent history which have greatly contributed to the country having a sizeable and varied immigrant population at present. The Global Economic Crisis of 2008 has severely impacted numerous countries in the European Union including Portugal. Conditions in Portugal had been gradually worsening, largely as a result of a stagnating national economy, where unemployment steadily increased in the years leading up to 2008. In the wake of the crisis, Portugal has experienced dramatic reductions in GDP, soaring unemployment rates and in particular regarding youth unemployment, social unrest and political instability. Further, the most vulnerable socioeconomic groups in Portugal have been worst affected, where social inequality, poverty and a whole array of other social issues have been exacerbated by the crisis and the austerity policies that were implemented in the wake of the economic crash. This thesis attempted to discover if attitudes towards immigrants have changed in light of worsening economic conditions in Portugal during three different time periods 2002-2006-2012, with a primary focus on the most recent period where conditions were most austere. Moreover, this research also sought to establish the determinants which influence attitudes towards immigrants over the same time period. Data was used from three rounds of the European Social Survey and in particular, round 1 (2002/2003), round 3 (2006/2007) and round 6 (2012/2013). Descriptive statistics and ordered logistic regressions were used in order to answer the research questions and realistic group conflict theory was utilised as a theoretical framework when analysing and explaining the findings. It was evident that attitudes towards immigrants have become more negative over the given time period and were indeed most pronounced in light of the recent economic crisis. It was also apparent that natives who were in greater competition with immigrants possessed the most pronounced levels of prejudice.

This research project aims to argue that the notions of ethnic identity, ethnic group and ethnicity should be thought of as socially constructed. In order to strengthen the above assumption, fieldwork was undertaken by examining African Mozambicans' narratives of immigration and identity, and acculturation strategies in Portugal and in England. The reading of the data suggests that individuals' perceptions of their identity and of the social world change over time, and in accordance with the social structures in which their lives are imbued. In addition, it is certain that social actors use discourse as a narrative form to justify and legitimise their identity options, and acculturative strategies. Taking into consideration the analysis of fieldwork material, it is possible to conclude, on the one hand, that the notions of ethnic identity, ethnic group and ethnicity are socially constructed, on the other hand, that the term ethnicity should be addressed as a detached human experience from the terms of ethnic identity and ethnic group.

A proposta de criar um museu com esta particularização é possível porque existe um interesse comunitário expressado desde há muito tempo e uma toma de consciência do papel histórico do movimento das populações em processos como a integração, o multiculturalismo ou a dinamização econômica. Os museus da migração consideram estas questões nos seus espaços de exposição. O projeto também considera estes fatores e propõe uma serie de princípios museológicos e de postulados museográficos para estabelecer uma instituição que contribui a valorizar e a difundir sua significação. O tema selecionado - o trabalho dos imigrantes portugueses - facilita a leitura transversal do discurso histórico das exposições previstas porque toma conta da representação cultural que a sociedade venezuelana tem feito da obra e dos trabalhadores imigrantes.

O objetivo principal do presente estudo é o de investigar e analisar as motivações e obstáculos de empreendedores chineses motivados por oportunidades em Portugal. Esses chineses que criam um novo empreendimento em Portugal sob oportunidade empresarial devem distinguir-se dos empreendedores chineses de necessidade ou sobrevivência. O grupo demográfico principal neste estudo é o de empreendedores imigrantes Chineses motivados por oportunidades que chegaram a Portugal após o ano de 2012. A partir desta data, existiu uma grande mudança da estrutura demográfica dos empreendedores chineses imigrantes que entraram em Portugal, devido à publicação de Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento (ARI) que atraiu não só investidores chineses mas também os empreendedores chineses que reconheceram oportunidades comerciais em Portugal. É proposto um enquadramento, que se divide em duas dimensões (fatores exteriores e fatores individuais), para demonstrar as motivações e os obstáculos suscitados com a criação de uma empresa em Portugal. Por causa de ausência de estudos académicos relacionados com o empreendedor imigrante chinês em Portugal, decidiu-se utilizar a metodologia de análise qualitativa. Selecionámos cinco casos representativos dos empreendedores chineses para desenvolver a análise, implementando entrevistas em profundidade com respostas a um conjunto de questões aos empreendedores.
This study's primary objective is to investigate and analyse the motivation and barriers of Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs in Portugal. The Chinese who create new ventures in Portugal with a particular business opportunity should be distinguished from those Chinese who are entrepreneurs for survival. The main demographic group in this study is Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs who arrived in Portugal after 2012. For after this date the demographic structure of Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs changed immensely in Portugal with the divulgation of Residential Authorisation for Investment Activity (ARI), which attracted not only Chinese investors, but also Chinese entrepreneurs who recognised potential business opportunities in Portugal. We advocate a framework of Chinese opportunity-driven immigrant entrepreneurs which demonstrates the motivation and barriers of their new venture in Portugal. As there is a lack of academic studies about Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs in Portugal, we decided to use a qualitative analysis which was divided into two dimensions, namely environmental factors and individual factors. We selected five representative cases of Chinese opportunity-driven entrepreneurs to develop the analysis, through the use of in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs with a set of questions.

In a context characterised by the shift from fordism to post-fordism in the Iberian peninsula, this thesis addresses the following question how are capital, governments and social movements organised in the processes of integration and resistance that affect foreign immigration' in Barcelona and Lisbon? Thus, in the first chapter, an analysis of the concept of "integration" is undertaken in order to understand the complexities and elusiveness that hide behind it, giving special attention to immigrants' integration literature. A distinction between systemic integration and social integration is adopted, and thus in the second chapter recent theorisation on capital and the state (i. e. systemic institutions) is approached, while in the third chapter social movements and organisations are taken into account. In chapter four epistemological and methodological elements are noted. The last three chapters are devoted to analyse original fieldwork data (mainly qualitative interviews): chapter 6 analyses immigration governmental policies at European, 'national-state', 'national-regional', and local levels; chapter 7 studies social and capital organisations in Barcelona in relation to 'foreign immigration'; and in chapter 8 social and capital organisations are studied in relation to 'foreign immigration' in Lisbon. Finally, some conclusions are revealed whilst other questions are posed.

Este estudo procurou analisar a integração dos imigrantes brasileiros no mercado de trabalho em Portugal e até onde estes têm contacto com a Gestão de Recursos Humanos. Devido a crise económica, algumas empresas têm utilizado a flexibilidade de emprego para responder as mudanças tecnológicas e se manter no mercado. Essa situação, algumas vezes, traz uma certa precariedade laboral, que além de afetar os portugueses, também faz com que as condições de trabalho dos imigrantes venha a se agravar. A estratégia de investigação empírica privilegiou o método do estudo de caso e baseou-se numa metodologia qualitativa, utilizando como técnica a entrevista semi-estruturada. Com base nos resultados encontrados, podemos dizer que, os imigrantes brasileiros, que muitas vezes, começam por trabalhar em segmentos pouco qualificados e onde predominam situações de precariedade laboral, de alguma forma sempre tiveram contacto com a gestão de RH e que muitos destes inquiridos, passaram por todas as etapas de uma GRH, nomeadamente entrevista, seleção, formação, avaliação de desempenho. Os resultados revelam também que, com o passar do tempo, com a experiência adquirida e com as formações que fizeram, conseguiram trabalhos melhores, sendo que, alguns deles hoje têm cargos de chefia ou até mesmo seu próprio negócio.
This study analised the integration of the Brasilian immigrants in the Portuguese work market and their relation with the Human Resources Management. Due to the economical crisis some companies have used the work flexibility as an answer to the technological changes and to keep up the competitivity. Sometimes that situation creates the precariousness of work, which besides affecting the Portuguese also worsens the work conditions of the immigrants. The strategy of the empirical investigation has privileged the case method study and was based in a qualitative methodology, using as technic the semi-structured interview. Based on the results, the Brasilian immigrants, who often start working in low qualification jobs, where the insecurity is high, somehow have always been in contact with the Human Resources Management and most of the interviewed have been through all the stages of Human Resources Management, namely: interview, selection, training and performance assessment. The results also reveal that, as time went by, with the training and the experience gained, they were able to find better jobs and some of them even got promoted to a leading position or started their own businesses.

O objectivo desta dissertação é descrever os processos de participação cívica de jovens imigrantes dos PALOP e a relação com o sentimento de comunidade local e sentimento de comunidade nacional. Utilizámos uma abordagem multimétodo. Na componente quantitativa foi aplicada a Escala Breve de Sentimento de Comunidade (EBSC) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008) a uma amostra de 60 participantes. Relativamente à componente qualitativa, conduzimos um grupo de discussão focalizada e quatro entrevistas individuais. Os factores de inclusão de participantes no estudo foram: nascimento num país dos PALOP e ter entre 18 e 24 anos no momento de recolha de dados. Os dados quantitativos foram analisados estatisticamente, tendo sido realizada análise factorial exploratória, cálculos de correlações entre variáveis e testes não-paramétricos para testar a existência de diferenças nos scores da EBSC ao nível das variáveis sociodemográficas. Os dados qualitativos foram analisados à luz da análise temática. Os resultados indicam um sentimento de comunidade mediano, tanto a nível comunitário (M = 2.77) como a nível nacional, como se entende pela congregação dos dados quantitativos e qualitativos. Existem diferenças no sentimento de comunidade: participantes com nacionalidade Portuguesa e participantes que residem em Portugal há mais de dez anos apresentam scores mais elevados na EBSC. Os resultados indicam que o sentimento de comunidade mediano tem implicações na participação dos jovens, o que é convergente com a literatura. Concluímos que os resultados da dissertação contribuem para a investigação nesta área, sobretudo por integrar a aferição do sentimento de comunidade local e nacional e descrever a sua relação com a participação cívica.
The main aim of this dissertation is to describe the civic youth engagement processes among immigrants from Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PSAC) and the relation between local sense of community and national sense of community. It was used a multi-method approach. Regarding the quantitative component, it was applied the Brief Sense of Community Scale (BSCS) (Peterson, Speer & McMillan, 2008) to 60 a participants sample. Regarding the qualitative component, we conducted a focus group and four individual interviews. The participants’ inclusion criteria in the study were: being born in one of the (PSAC) and an age between 18 and 24 years at the moment of data collection. The quantitative data were analyzed statistically, and we performed exploratory factorial analysis, calculated correlations among variables and non-parametric tests to probe for the existence of differences in BSSC’s scores at sociodemographic variables level. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results suggest a medium sense of community (M = 2.77), both at the national and the community level, as we were able to perceive by the congregation of quantitative and qualitative data. There are differences in sense of community: participants with Portuguese nationality and the participants that live in Portugal since more than ten years ago show higher scores in BSCS. The results suggest that the medium sense of community as practical implications in youth participation, and this is convergent with literature. We conclude that the dissertation results contribute towards research in this area, mainly because the study integrates the sense of community measure at national and local level and describes its relation with civic participation.

Contexte: De récentes études ont explicitement démontré que les communautés d’immigrants doivent affronter des difficultés particulières afin d'accéder aux services de santé et font face à des disparités sanitaires significatives, subissant l'effet de déterminants sociaux sous-jacents de la santé (DSS). Les immigrants représentant un pourcentage grandissant de la population dans de nombreux pays développés, mieux comprendre et supprimer ces barrières est une des grandes priorités. En se fondant sur l'utilisation d'une structure DSS, cette thèse contribue aux recherches actuelles concernant l'accès aux services de santé parmi les populations d'immigrants bangladais dans trois villes internationales : Lisbonne (Portugal), Bruxelles (Belgique) et Boston (Massachusetts, U.S.A.). À cet effet, elle apporte des précisions sur les données qualitatives limitées disponibles concernant les communautés immigrantes bangladaises qui vivent sur les sites de recherche mentionnés ci-dessus.Résultats: Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les immigrants bangladais vivant sur ces trois sites de recherche possèdent une vision généralement holistique de la santé et du bien-être. Les pressions de l'acculturation et l'isolement social constituent deux des DSS pertinents ayant une influence sur la santé et l'accès aux services sanitaires. Parmi les principaux enjeux de santé et besoins en soins de cette communauté, les problèmes de santé mentale et l'isolement social, l'alimentation et les habitudes alimentaires, le manque d'activité physique, des niveaux élevés de diabète et de maladies cardiovasculaires ont été identifiés comme facteurs influençant. Certaines valeurs culturelles associées à des motivations d'ordre économique peuvent conditionner l'importance que les individus accordent à leur santé. A titre d'exemple, l'obligation envers la famille, profondément ancrée dans la culture bangladaise, se traduit souvent chez les immigrants travaillant à l'étranger par un sentiment de pression économique et se manifeste par un stress chronique et un déséquilibre entre vie professionnelle et vie personnelle. La communication et les barrières linguistiques apparaissent comme étant les principaux freins à l'engagement des immigrants bangladais avec les prestataires de soins. Enfin, le type ainsi que le contexte de l'immigration joue un rôle important dans l'utilisation des services de santé par les immigrants bangladais: le sentiment d’être dans une situation transitoire sur le lieu où ils se trouvent tel qu'à Lisbonne et Bruxelles, en opposition à une perspective d'établissement plus permanent tel qu'à Boston, semble influencer l'utilisation active de soins de santé continus.Conclusion: Les problèmes de santé de chaque individu, la situation de leur statut d'immigrant et les circonstances familiales ont joué un rôle sur la manière dont les membres de la communauté bangladaise ont accédé et utilisé les services de santé sur chaque site de recherche. Bien que les liens sociaux au sein des communautés bangladaises vivant à l'étranger soient forts, tous les individus ne se trouvaient pas nécessairement en contact avec les membres de leur communauté. Ceci met en exergue le besoin d'un engagement et d'une sensibilisation auprès des immigrants susceptibles de ne pas bénéficier de la protection du capital social de leur communauté. Cette dissertation a permis de dresser le profil des déterminants sociaux influençant l'accès aux services de santé de la communauté immigrante bangladaise, avec pour objectif d'informer les professionnels travaillant avec cette population. A cet effet, les conclusions de cette recherche seront partagées avec les participants et intervenants de chaque site d'études afin de renforcer la compréhension des communautés immigrantes bangladaises et accroître les ressources mises à leur disposition
Background: Recent studies clearly identify that immigrant communities experience specific challenges in accessing health care services, and face significant health disparities, that are impacted by underlying social determinants of health (SDH). As immigrants comprise an increasing percentage of the population in many developed nations, a better understanding and eliminating of these barriers is a major priority. Using an SDH framework, this dissertation contributes to the current research regarding access to health services among Bangladeshi immigrant populations in three international cities: Lisbon (Portugal), Brussels (Belgium), and Boston (MA-USA). In doing so, it expands upon the limited qualitative data available that concerns Bangladeshi immigrant communities living in these aforementioned research sites.Methods: This dissertation utilized a qualitative descriptive research design to comprehend issues from the perspective of both immigrant community members and service providers. The findings presented in this study, therefore, focus on data analyzed from 45 original in-depth interviews with Bangladeshi immigrant community members (n=32) and service providers (n=13) across Lisbon, Brussels, and Boston. Data was collected primarily using a semi-structured interview guide.Results: Bangladeshi immigrants living across the three research sites possess an overall holistic view of health and well-being according to results. Relevant SDH affecting health and accessing health services included pressures of acculturation and social isolation. The following were identified as some of the key community health issues and care needs: mental health and social isolation, food and dietary habits, lack of exercise, high levels of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Certain cultural values coupled with economic motivators may influence the way individuals prioritize their health. For example, the obligation towards family that is deeply embedded in Bangladeshi culture often translated to feelings of economic pressure by immigrants working abroad and manifested as chronic stress and a work-life imbalance. Communication and language barriers emerged as the most prominent issue of engagement between Bangladeshi immigrants and service providers. Finally, the type and context of immigration played in important role in health service utilization by Bangladeshi immigrants: a transitory outlook on their current location such as in Lisbon and Brussels, as opposed to a more permanent outlook in Boston, appeared to influence the active uptake of continuous health care.Conclusion: Individual health priorities, immigration status, and family circumstances affected how Bangladeshi community members accessed and utilized health services at each research site. Although social networks in Bangladeshi communities abroad were strong, not all individuals were necessarily connected with their fellow community members. This underlines the need to initiate engagement and outreach to immigrant individuals who may fall outside of the protection of social capital in their community. This dissertation has established a profile of social determinants impacting access to health services for Bangladeshi immigrant communities, with the purposes of informing professionals working within this population. As such, results will be shared with participants and stakeholders at each of the study sites in order to strengthen the understanding of and resources available to Bangladeshi immigrant communities

A comunidade cabo-verdiana, considerada a mais antiga e a mais enraizada em Portugal, constituiu durante décadas a maior a residir no país, principalmente no final dos anos 60. A proximidade cultural, a facilidade no processo de legalização e integração, foram fatores determinantes para a escolha de Portugal como destino. O objetivo deste trabalho é abordar a integração das cabo-verdianas no mercado de trabalho português. Consonante com esta problemática, o foco principal é analisar alguns campos que são fundamentais e que marcam a sua realidade, nomeadamente: as dificuldades de integração no mercado de trabalho; o grau de satisfação no trabalho e a sua remuneração; o tipo de trabalho que desempenham; as variáveis que facilitam a integração no mercado de trabalho; e os principais motivos que as levaram a emigrarem. A metodologia a seguir passa pela pesquisa bibliográfica e análise documental, seguindo da realização de uma entrevista qualitativa, com base numa amostra de 17 mulheres residentes na área de Lisboa. A recolha dos dados foi feita no ano de 2012, na Associação de Solidariedade Imigrante, no Terreiro do Paço. Os resultados mostram que as mulheres cabo-verdianas em Portugal enfrentam algumas dificuldades na integração no mercado de trabalho.
Cape Verdean community is considered the oldest and the most entrenched in Portugal. For decades, mainly in the last 60s, they were the largest community living in Portugal. Cultural proximity, facility in legalization process and integration, were the determining factors to choose Portugal as destination country. The objective of this study is to approach the integration of Cape Verdean women in Portuguese labor market. Consonant with this problem, the main focus is to analyze some important fields that mark their reality, namely: the integration difficulties in labor market; the degree of the job satisfaction, and the remuneration; the type of work they perform; the variables which facilitate integration in the labor market, and the main reasons which made them to emigrate. The methodology involves literature search, and documental analysis following a completion of a qualitative interview, based on a sample of seventeen women living in the Lisbon area. Data collection was made in 2012 in the Association of Immigrant Solidarity, located in Terreiro do Paço. The results show that, in Portugal, Cape Verdean women face some difficulties to integrate in labor market.

AbstractUsing the lens of the new patterns of mobility and lifestyle entrepreneurship in the context of counterurbanization movements, this chapter explores the relationship between tourism and immigration, beyond the traditional approach of immigrants as tourism entrepreneurs. The study focusses on a Portuguese rural county, Penamacor, which, for several decades, has suffered a continuous exodus of population and the consequent aging of the remaining population but where, recently, there was a spontaneous phenomenon of foreign people arriving and settling in the area. Thus, through the case of Penamacor, this study aims to answer the following questions: Who are these migrants, and what are their motivations for mobility and to settle in the territory? Are they all the same? How do they make a living in Penamacor? In particular, it seeks to understand whether entrepreneurship (in tourism or other sectors) is a possibility of income generation for these immigrants. Furthermore, it intends to understand what the impact of these immigrants in the territory is, concerning the creation of wealth and well-being in the community. Do they act as community entrepreneurs? Does their presence in the territory generate other mobility flows, through the attraction of other (family and friends) tourists or immigrants?

Abstract Portugal is a traditional country of emigration with a multigenerational diaspora spread across a large number of countries. In the last 50 years, especially after the 1974 revolution, it developed a welfare state that responds to the needs of residents (including immigrants). Traditionally, this welfare state has been described as fragile in comparison with other welfare regimes in Europe. Nevertheless, it was built as a universal welfare system based on jus solis and deterritorialized jus sanguinis regime. The study of the extension of social protection to Portuguese citizens living abroad had not yet received sufficient attention, albeit recurrent news on measures and strategies that the state put in practice to assist Portuguese emigrants in need. This chapter will survey some of the recent policies to reach citizens abroad by showing the limits of the Portuguese welfare state in action. Through these policies and actions, Portugal projects an image of an always-present state that extents its national powers beyond the limits of its territorially confined borders.

AbstractUsing data from the Trajectories and Origins survey (TeO), this chapter investigates the role of networks in access to employment of descendants of immigrants in France. I compare the recruitment channels and the type of networks used by various origin groups and the majority population. And I analyse the determinants of obtaining a job through family ties or personal networks, disentangling the effects of origin from other individual characteristics, and the nature of the job obtained. I show that the use of networks – and the kind of networks - to get jobs varies by origin groups and by gender. Within-group differences exist also according to education, family background and place of residence, as well as by sector of employment. Controlling for similar characteristics, family ties play help descendants of migrants from Turkey to get a job, and to a lesser extent, descendants from Portugal. This helps explain ethnic segregation and the quality of the jobs of these groups. Descendants of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa and from North Africa were less likely to obtain less their job through networks. This is especially true for women, who compensate by using more formal methods. These groups would need stronger networks or intermediaries to provide trusted information to employers and reduce discrimination and racism. This chapter thus contributes to a better understanding of the inequalities faced by various origin groups in the French labour market.
