Résumé :
We consider the class of evolution equations of the form [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], that describe pseudo-spherical surfaces. These were classified by Chern and Tenenblat in [Pseudospherical surfaces and evolution equations, Stud. Appl. Math 74 (1986) 55–83.]. This class of equations is characterized by the property that to each solution of such an equation, there corresponds a 2-dimensional Riemannian metric of constant curvature [Formula: see text]. Motivated by the special properties of the sine-Gordon equation, we investigate the following problem: given such a metric, is there a local isometric immersion in [Formula: see text] such that the coefficients of the second fundamental form of the immersed surface depend on a jet of finite order of [Formula: see text]? We extend our earlier results for second-order evolution equations [N. Kahouadji, N. Kamran and K. Tenenblat, Local isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces and evolution equations, Fields Inst. Commun. 75 (2015) 369–381; N. Kahouadji, N. Kamran and K. Tenenblat, Second-order equations and local isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces, Comm. Anal. Geom. 24(3) (2016) 605–643.] to [Formula: see text]th order equations by proving that there is only one type of equation that admit such an isometric immersion. More precisely, we prove under the condition of finite jet dependency that the coefficients of the second fundamental forms of the local isometric immersion determined by the solutions [Formula: see text] are universal, i.e. they are independent of [Formula: see text]. Moreover, we show that there exists a foliation of the domain of the parameters of the surface by straight lines with the property that the mean curvature of the surface is constant along the images of these straight lines under the isometric immersion.

Résumé :
In this study, Brazilian splitting tests were conducted on sandstone samples subjected to drying and immersing at water pressures of 0, 1, and 3 MPa (immersion duration of 120 h). Investigation of the immersion effects of pressure water on the tensile characteristics of the samples revealed that their tensile strengths decreased with the immersion water pressure. Relative to a sandstone sample subjected to drying alone, immersing at water pressures of 0, 1, and 3 MPa reduced the tensile strength by 12.96%, 19.03%, and 30.16%, respectively. Although the immersed samples experienced splitting failure indicative of obvious brittle failure characteristics, decreases in the postpeak stress reduction rate with immersion water pressure revealed that the intensity of brittle failure weakened with pressure. Based on the obtained data, the deformation evolution process of the sandstone samples could be divided into five stages: deformation adjustment, formation of local deformation zones, local deformation zone propagation, failure surface formation, and sample failure. The water pressure aggravated the physicochemical reactions between water and the hydrophilic minerals in the sandstone, promoting argillisation, dissolution, and loss of hydrophilic minerals and interparticle cementitious materials. As a result of these immersion micromechanisms, the deterioration of the sandstone samples increased with the immersion water pressure, with the average porosities of the fracture surfaces at 0, 1, and 3 MPa increasing by 142.86%, 368.37%, and 593.88%, respectively, relative to the dried sample. As a result of these morphological changes, the sandstone samples subjected to water pressure immersion failed at small axial stresses with low levels of applied mechanical energy.

Résumé :
Present paper deals with the delayed fracture in woven GFRP underwater at elevated temperature. The tensile test of GFRP after water immersion was conducted to evaluate the residual strength ater immersion at various water temperatures. The residual strength of GFRP decreased with the increase in the water temperature and the immersion time. In fact, the transition in failure mode with water immersion was ascertained from SEM observation of the fracture surface. Additionally, creep test in air and under hot water at 95°C was conducted. The creep rupture time decreased drastically with water immersion, in contrast, creep rupture wasn’t observed from the creep test in air. It was clarified that the water immersion generated the transition in the failure mode of GFRP and therefore led to the acceleration of the strength degradation.

Résumé :
The salinity tolerance and osmoregulation of Pseudocarcinonemertes homari were determined to develop a method for elimination of this nemertean from egg masses of American lobster, Homarus americanus. The lower and upper lethal salinities (LS50) for nemerteans are 11 and 45‰ at 7 °C and 19 and 37‰ at 14.5 °C. Immersion in freshwater was lethal in 4 min or less, depending on temperature. The nemerteans hyperosmoconformed over the range 10–1600 mosm∙kg−1. Lobster eggs (eye index [Formula: see text]) survived for 2–8 h when immersed in freshwater. Ovigerous lobster were not affected by a 5-min immersion in freshwater and were able to withstand at least 30 min if only the abdomen was immersed. Lobster eggs hatched and larvae developed normally up to at least stage IV, even after a 30-min freshwater immersion. These results suggest that nemerteans could be eliminated from American lobster by immersing their abdomen and attached eggs in freshwater for 5 min and immersing the entire lobster for an additional 5 min.

Résumé :
In order to realize the comprehensive utilization of the underground space formed by gypsum mining, with the core goal of building an oil storage depot in the gypsum mine goaf, the designed rock infiltration loading device was used to prepare gypsum rock samples immersed in oil for 0, 15, and 30 days for rock mechanics experiments. The influence of oil immersion on the mechanical behavior of the gypsum ore rock mass was studied, and the damage evolution mechanism of gypsum ore rock was explored through statistical fitting and normalized quantitative evaluation. The results show that, with the increase in oil immersion time, the peak stress and elastic modulus of gypsum rock both tend to decrease, and the decrease degree of each parameter is smaller when the confining pressure is higher. The normalized expression of each parameter of gypsum ore and rock with the oil immersion time was established, the deterioration coefficient of each parameter was defined, and the influence law of the oil immersion time on each parameter was analyzed. With the increase in oil immersion time, the internal friction angle of gypsum ore rock exhibited an increasing trend, while the other parameters exhibited a decreasing trend. The oil immersion time had the greatest influence on the cohesion of gypsum ore rock, followed by peak stress, internal friction angle, and elastic modulus. Moreover, it was further demonstrated that high confining pressure conditions weaken the deterioration effect of oil immersion on gypsum rock, i.e., high confining pressure conditions are more conducive to crude oil storage. The research results herein provide theoretical support for the improvement of the theory of “treatment and utilization synergy” in gypsum mine goaf.

This paper presents a sequential coupled thermo-metallurgical-mechanical finite element model for low alloy steel quenching which can be used to predict temperature history, evolution of microstructure, internal stress and distortion. The main efforts are to develop a series of subroutines which consider the latent heat released due to phase transformation and numerical implementation of a thermo-metallurgical-mechanical constitute equation. The effectiveness of developed computational method is confirmed by a immersion quenching. Simulations of immersion quenching demonstrate that transformation induce plasticity has significant effect of the evolution of residual stress, distortion and can not be neglected for low alloy steel during immersion quenching.

Résumé :
Damage of cement paste under attack of sodium sulfate solution with different temperature and regime were carried out in this paper. Experimental study was executed on cement paste admixed by fly ash and GGBS. Sulfate concentration is 33.8g/l SO42- solution (5% by mass of Na2SO4). Two exposure regimes are employed in this study including immersion and drying-immersion cycles. In immersion regime, the temperature of sulfate solution is room temperature, 50°C and 80°C. Physical properties and sulfate ion distribution of paste were systematically tested during 150 days of sulfate exposure. And effects of raised temperature and drying-immersion cycles on deterioration of paste were also determined. The experimental results show that the strength, mass and expansion rate of paste improves initially and then progressively degrade until failure in sulfate environment. Beside chemical attack, which is major damage factor to paste in immersion regime, crystallized thenardite results in surface scaling of paste in drying-immersion cycles. Raised temperature and drying-immersion cycles accelerate the physical properties evolution process and increase the effective sulfate diffusion coefficient.

A theoretical defense of aesthetics as an open science, of knowledge from the perspective of computational information and electronic networks. The transformation of technologies vis-à-vis the evolutionary creation and immersion of digital arts and the use of computing poses a wider conception about interaction, participation and visual concepts in terms of an event horizon. Artists and scientists who use the digital medium face two transformation processes in the creative milieu: in the first place, understanding the transformation of the matter used in the past to represent objects and works of art, now with information bytes, computing codes and algorithms. On the other hand, computational technologies used in order to share and transfer knowledge on the Internet, establishing social, academic and scientific ties leading to the creation of immersive relationships that explain a technological and creative evolution. Résumé :
Biocomposite films based on PLA reinforced with different β-TCP contents (10%, 20%, and 25%wt.) were fabricated via solvent casting and immersed in SBF for 7, 14, and 21 days. The bioactivity, morphological, and thermal behavior of composites with immersion were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis, weight loss (WL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This broad analysis leads to a deeper understanding of the evolution of the polymer–filler interaction with the degradation of the biocomposites. The results showed that β-TCP gradually evolved into carbonated hydroxyapatite as the immersion time increased. This evolution affected the interaction of β-TCP with PLA. PLA and β-TCP interactions differed from PLA and carbonated hydroxyapatite interactions. It was observed that β-TCP inhibited PLA hydrolysis but accelerated the thermal degradation of the polymer. β-TCP retarded the cold crystallization of PLA and hindered its crystallinity. However, after immersion in SBF, particles accelerated the cold crystallization of PLA. Therefore, considering the evolution of β-TCP with immersion in SBF is crucial for an accurate analysis of the biocomposites’ degradation. These findings enhance the comprehension of the degradation mechanism in PLA/β-TCP, which is valuable for predicting the degradation performance of PLA/β-TCP in medical applications.

Résumé :
These combined two papers make the case that certain kinds of learning in relatively less human-directed environments, which we call wilderness immersion tuning, not only make good evolutionary and neuroscience sense, but are needed for the optimal growth and learning of young people. The paper is presented in two parts. Part One makes a neuroscience-based case for learning in certain ways in wild spaces. It considers the philosophical idea of humans as embodied learners. It provides a connection between recent neuroscience discoveries and empirical studies highlighting the effectiveness of learning in nature. Part Two extends these neuroscience discoveries and particularly explores psycho-social maturation through learning in less human-controlled places. It calls for learning in wild places for early adolescent students. While the two parts are separated in order to meet editorial guidelines, they are necessarily intertwined and ought to be read as parts of a whole.

McConville, David. « On the evolution of the heavenly spheres : an enactive approach to cosmography ». Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3530.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The ability to view the world from multiple perspectives is essential for tackling complex, interconnected challenges. Yet conventional academic structures are designed to produce knowledge through ever-increasing specialization and compartmentalization. This fragmentation is often reinforced by tacit dualistic assumptions that prioritize linear thinking and abstract ways of knowing. Though the need for integrated approaches has been widely acknowledged, effective techniques for transcending disciplinary boundaries remain elusive. This thesis describes a practical strategy that uses immersive visualizations to cultivate transdisciplinary perspectives. It develops an enactive approach to cosmography, contending that processes of visualizing and interpreting the cosmos iteratively shape ‘views’ of the ‘world.’ The archetypal trope of the heavenly sphere is examined to demonstrate the significance of its interpretations in this history of ideas. Action research and mixed methods are employed to elucidate the theoretical considerations, cultural relevance, and practical consequences of this approach. The study begins with an investigation into the recurring appearance of the heavenly sphere across time, in which its embodied origins, metaphorical influence, and material embodiments are considered. Particular attention is given to how cosmographic tools and techniques have facilitated imaginary ‘flights’ through the heavens, from the ecstatic bird’s eye view of the shaman to the ‘Archimedean point’ of modern science. It then examines how these cosmographic practices have shaped cosmological beliefs and paradigmatic assumptions. Next, the practical utility of this approach is demonstrated through the development of cosmographic hermeneutics, a technique using visual heuristics to interpret cosmic models from transdisciplinary world views. Finally, the performative practice of cosmotroping is described, in which cosmographic hermeneutics are applied to re-imagine the ancient dream of the transcendent ‘cosmic journey’ within immersive vision theaters. This study concludes that the re-emergence of the heavenly sphere within the contemporary Digital Universe Atlas provides a leverage point for illuminating the complexity of knowledge production processes. It is claimed that this research has produced a practical strategy for demonstrating that the ultimate Archimedean point is the ability to recognize the limits of our own knowledge, a crucial first step in cultivating much-needed multi-perspectival and paradoxical spherical thinking.

The term “ sound immersion ” appeared in various artistic fields at the end of the 20th century. It covers many dimensions, whether they are physical, metaphorical or even metaphysical. However, sound immersion can only be achieved with, by or for sound. From the concrete realization of the auditory phenomenon in all its omnidirectionality, to the artistic and contextualized implementation of interaction with the sound world, via a conjunction with the ecological spirit to the quest for modified states of consciousness, sound immersion proposes to communicate differently with the world through sound. In particular, the term has gained considerable extent with contemporary music, highlighting new paradigms and concepts, developing new ways of approaching areas such as corporeality, multiplicity, interaction, fusion, or spirituality. The notion of sound immersion helps us to understand several specific languages, and the resulting aesthetic implies multiple trends or styles, and is thus associated with the search for greater sensitivity and expanded spatiality, a non-linear form of temporality or more metaphorical philosophical concepts. To better understand the ins and outs of this phenomenon, the thesis focuses on the study of Luigi Nono's universe through the analysis of his work Prometeo. Tragedia dell'ascolto (1981-1984, rev. 1985). All the particularities of sound immersion, from aesthetic apprehension to compositional realization, are illustrated, clarifying its artistic and human scope

In the last decade several search-based algorithms have been developed for generating levels in different types of games. The search space for level generation is typically constrained once the game mechanics define feasibility rules for the levels. In some methods, evaluating level feasibility requires a simulation with an intelligent agent which plays the game. This evaluation process usually has noise, caused by random components in the simulator or in the agent strategy. Several works have used a simulation for content evaluation, however, none of them have deeply discussed the presence of noise in this kind of approach. Thus, this paper presents a genetic algorithm capable of generating feasible levels that are evaluated by an intelligent agent in a noisy simulation. The algorithm was applied to physics-based puzzle games with the Angry Birds mechanics. A level representation in the form of individuals is introduced, which allows the genetic algorithm to evolve them with distinct characteristics. The fitness function noise is handled by a new approach, based on a cache system, which helps the genetic algorithm finding good candidate solutions. Three sets of experiments were conducted to evaluate the algorithm. The first one compares the proposed cache approach with other noise reduction methods of the literature. The second one measures the expressivity of the genetic algorithm considering the structural characteristics of the levels. The last one evaluates design aspects (such as difficulty, immersion and fun) of the generated levels using questionnaires answered by human players via Internet. Results showed the genetic algorithm was capable of generating distinct levels that are as immersive as levels manually designed. Moreover, the cache approach handled properly the noise in the fitness calculations, allowing a correct elitist evolution.

This study develops a Virtual Age game based learning involving the content of evolution. The virtual age game provided students’ opportunity to learn the evolution through simulated different roles. In addition, the same content of evolution virtual age game learning was modified to an animation. One of the aims of this study was to explore the effects of game-based learning on students’ learning of evolution concepts, immersion experience and motivation. In addition, it also to investigate the effectiveness between two different learning approaches (game-based learning vs. animation learning). Moreover, the relationships between learners’ immersion experience and their motivation was examined. To test the above presented idea, a quasi-experimental design was used in this study. A total of 145 7th grade students from four classes participated in this study and they were randomly assigned into two different groups which are game-based learning group (experimental group) and animation learning group (control group). Experimental group students received four different times of learning opportunities (each take an hour), and the evolution achievement test, immersion experience and motivation questionnaires were administered after each time of learning. Unlike the experimental group, students in the control group only receive one time learning of the animation following by taken the evolution achievement test, immersion experience and motivation questionnaires. The results showed there was no statistically significant difference in students’ evolution conceptual understanding performance and evolution synthesis level performance between two learning approaches. However, the experimental students made better immediate and retaining performance on both assessments than to the control group. Within the experimental group, high achievers significantly outperformed than to the medium and low achievers, and medium achievers outperformed than to the low achievers on their evolution conceptual understanding performance. High achievers also significantly outperformed than to the medium and low achievers on their game scores after their fourth time of learning. For the immersion experience, it was found that students made progress on their total immersion pretest to post test and from posttest to their 4th posttest. For their motivation, it was found that students made progress on their success expectation scale 3rd posttest to 1st posttest, 4th posttest to 2nd posttest, and 4th posttest to 1st posttest. Moreover, the stepwise regression result indicated that intrinsic goal orientation and interest of motivation can predict their engagement, engrossment, and total immersion.

« Enclosing Nature : Naturalism, Animal Welfare, and the Evolution of Zoo Design ». Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.48445.

Résumé :
abstract: Zoos are a unique collection-based institution with deep roots in the social structure of modern society. From their beginnings as elite menageries to display power or wealth, they have evolved into public institutions committed to providing exemplary animal care, and recreational and educational opportunities for visitors. More recently, zoos have developed a series of significant conservation programs and partnerships around the globe, efforts that have proved vital to saving endangered species such as the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) and California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), among other species. Intrinsic to the development of modern zoo designs are the interwoven concerns of naturalism and animal welfare. Animal welfare, in particular, has become the paramount responsibility for professionally run zoological institutions as they seek to become centers of conservation and education without compromising animal wellbeing. Animal welfare and naturalism (understood as a design feature in zoo exhibits) are typically harmonious objectives, but these goals have occasionally clashed in implementation. While animal welfare and naturalism are defined in various (and not always consistent) ways in the literature, in-depth interviews of leading professionals and scholars in the zoo community and multi-dimensional case studies of exemplary, accredited institutions (including the Phoenix Zoo, the San Diego Zoo, Woodland Park Zoo and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum) provide unique insight into the shifting meaning of these terms and how welfare and naturalism have and continue to shape the development of modern zoo enclosures. This study concludes by suggesting a possible future trajectory for innovative and alternative zoo designs that incorporate both animal welfare and naturalism without sacrificing either goal.

Résumé :
Australian Media Arts: in this place examines themes of relationships to place, and loss of place within an Australian context. A series of academic accounts of national media arts practice, trace the evolution of the field and explore a particular period, the technologies that emerged, artists who explored these technologies and their works that articulate this exploration. What is common in these recent accounts of media art histories is a tracing of the relationship between the artists and the technologies that afforded their explorations within a national framework. What I aim to do is something different; I intend to locate a small subset of Australian media art works that talk about key issues pertinent to Australian cultural identity, namely colonisation, the displacement of the First Australians and the ongoing effects of loss of place also experienced in a broader sense through migration. The dissertation examines three collaborative works by artists, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Ian de Gruchy, Janet Laurence and Fiona Foley, and Lynette Wallworth that explore aspects of Australia’s colonial, Indigenous and migrant histories. The aim of my studio work and its account in the exegesis has been to examine how issues of place and loss of place can be addressed through my visual and media arts practice. My work has formed around the interrelationship of terms such as location/dislocation, memory/site, identity/loss of identity and what is visible/invisible. I have explored the intersections of personal and cultural histories, a sense of home and belonging as an individual and with particular Australian communities through media arts installation, site specific performance, video and photographic works.

Ritter persuasively argues that practitioners of immersive productions deploy choreography as a structural mechanism to mobilize the bodies of cast and audience members to perform together. Furthermore, choreography is contextualized as an effective tool for facilitating audience participation towards immersion as an affect. Ritter’s close choreographic analysis of immersive productions, along with unique insights from choreographers, directors, performers, and spectators enlivens discourse across dramaturgy, kinesthesia, affect, and co-authorship. By foregrounding the choreographic in order to examine its specific impact on the evolution of immersive theater, Tandem Dances explores choreography as a discursive domain that is fundamentally related to creative practice, agendas of power and control, and concomitant issues of freedom and agency.

Résumé :
Ancient tragedy has played a well-documented role in contemporary theatre since the mid-twentieth century. In addition to the often-commented-upon watershed productions, however, is a significant but overlooked history involving classical tragedy in experimental and avant-garde theatre. Postdramatic Tragedies focuses upon such experimental reinventions. It analyses receptions of Greek and Roman tragedy that come under the banner of ‘postdramatic theatre’, a style of performance in which the traditional components of drama, such as character and narrative, are subordinate to the immediate, affective power of more abstract elements, such as image and sound. The book is in three parts, each of which explores classical reception within a specific strand of postdramatic theatre: text-based theatre, devised theatre, and theatre that transcends the usual boundaries of time and space, such as durational and immersive theatre. Across the three sections the author conducts a semiotic and phenomenological analysis of seven case studies, of productions from 1995 to 2015 from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Continental Europe. The book covers a mixture of widely known productions, such as Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love, alongside works largely unknown in Anglophone scholarship, such as Martin Crimp’s Alles Weitere kennen Sie aus dem Kino and Jan Fabre’s Mount Olympus. It reveals that postdramatic theatre is related to the classics at its conceptual core, and that the study of postdramatic tragedies reveals a great deal about both the evolution of theatre in recent decades, and the status of ancient drama in modernity.

Résumé :
Abstract In this personal essay, Tova Mirvis describes her religious evolution concerning the Jewish ritual of mikvah, or women’s immersion into a bath to attain a state of ritual purity. Her initiation begins before her wedding night, when she is accompanied by her mother to the mikvah to be purified before having sex for the first time. The practice continues each month, at the conclusion of her menstrual period. As the years go by, Mirvis begins to experience doubt about her religious observance in general and adherence to the practice of mikvah in particular, chafing at the requirement to ‘cleanse’ herself monthly. Mirvis writes that her discomfort over time leads her to experiment with other forms of ritual immersion and, eventually, she leaves the religious world that had been so central to her.

Résumé :
AbstractAspecial metal-casting simulator allowed to investigate the behavior of nozzles and filters in contact with a steel melt under controlled atmosphere. First, the clogging of carbon-bonded alumina nozzles with different active or reactive coatings was evaluated by introducing exogenous inclusions while monitoring the changes in melt flow with time. In addition, the microstructure of the nozzles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to assess the coating decomposition and phase transformations. In further approaches, endogenous inclusions were generated in situ by pre-oxidizing and deoxidizing the steel melt. Filters with different active and reactive coatings were immersed for different times in order to investigate the evolution of newly formed phases on the filter surface as well as characterize their cleaning performance based on the analysis of the solidified steel. The inclusions in the frozen steel melt were characterized with the aid of an automatic SEM – ASPEX-system, which identified the chemistry as well as the size and population of the inclusions. In the last approach, investigations of a new combined refining process based on the immersion of reactive filters and a subsequent filtration via carbon-free active filters was investigated, in order to remove the remaining clusters of inclusions.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Italian fashion system is represented by a wide and valuable heritage that needs to be properly preserved and experienced by everybody, from fashion students to scholars, artisans and designers, etc. Although in the last decades there have been many attempts to create a museum dedicated specifically to Italian fashion, in the end, institutions or museums have not been able to carry out a valuable and accomplished project. One fundamental reason is represented by the Italian specificities in terms of the fashion-industry evolution and, more in general, by the complexity of the fashion system which has been built and continues to grow at the crossroads between different experiences, practices, and relations. As such, it has been studied from diverse disciplines and approaches ranging from art to design, from economics to sociology of culture, and so on. Moreover, when considering both the intangible and tangible fashion heritage, gathering them in order to preserve and share them becomes extremely difficult. The challenge is therefore to understand how to collect, preserve, and enjoy this heritage, combining the cultural pluralism of local traditions and their products, together with the creativity of artists and designers and the economic aspects of the industry, relating them all with the cultural and social features of everyday life-fashion. The aim of this paper is to address these issues starting from the preliminary reflections of the PNRR project (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, National Recovery and Resilience Plan) “Cultural heritage active innovation for next-gen sustainable society”, (CHANGES aims at promoting interdisciplinary research and inter-sectorial synergies to support the development of innovative long-term strategies for the interpretation, understanding, conservation, and valorization of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The extended partnership is composed of 11 Universities, 4 Research Institutions, 3 Advanced Studies Schools, 6 Companies, and 1 Center of Excellence (see https://sites.google.com/uniroma1.it/changes/home).) in order to discuss in detail the Spoke 2, “Creativity and Intangible Heritage” thematic line on fashion preservation and its musealization as developed by the authors of this essay.

Résumé :
In conditions where tight crevices exist in hot chloride containing solutions Alloy 22 may suffer crevice corrosion. The occurrence (or not) of crevice corrosion in a given environment (e.g. salt concentration and temperature), is governed by the values of the critical potential (Ecrit) for crevice corrosion and the corrosion potential (Ecorr). This paper discusses the evolution of Ecorr and corrosion rate (CR) of creviced Alloy 22 specimens in 5 M calcium chloride (CaCl2) at 120°C. Tested specimens included non-creviced rods and multiple creviced assemblies (MCA) both non-welded (wrought) and welded. Results show that Alloy 22 suffers crevice corrosion under the open circuit conditions in the aerated hot CaCl2 brine. However, after more than a year immersion the propagation of crevice corrosion was not significant. The general corrosion rate decreased or remained unchanged as the immersion time increased. For rods and MCA specimens, the corrosion rate was lower than 100 nm/year after more than a year immersion time.

Résumé :
The intention: Bring people to Japan to learn about human senses and cognition. This was just before the world locked down for the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan: Conduct a Sensory Safari that coincides with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. An opportunity for people to experience Tokyo at peak form and Japan at the top of its hosting spirit. An immersive way to expose participants to all human senses and methods for making offerings that are more understandable and fully human compatible. This curated experience is inspired by Proctor & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley and his visit to Japan decades earlier. After this visit he invests heavily in design and human factors seeking Japan-unique innovation in product packaging and placement. Uniqueness found only in Japan that persists to this day. Three years later, the country reopens for business and tourist travel and the renewed Tokyo 2023 Sensory Safari is again set in motion. Behind the safari is the Content Evolution SenseMapping practice team, with pioneering members of the now 30-year-young ThinkPad notebook computer, including the first IBM designer collaborating with the legendary industrial designer Richard Sapper, and the first named brand steward for IBM ThinkPad (today Lenovo). SenseMapping is a process and perspective to create coherence at the intersection of an organization (how it behaves and what it makes) with its value chain, customers, and stakeholders, and the intersection of human sensory perception and sense-making in the head, heart, and gut. The outcome: This paper documents the design of this immersive action learning experience, the framework for both observing and documenting product and service experiences while in Tokyo and sending participants home with a draft plan for action.

Résumé :
In this article, we describe a newly developed modeling procedure to simulate the immersion quench cooling process using the commercial code AVL-FIRE. The boiling phase change process, triggered by the dipping hot solid part into a subcooled liquid bath and the ensuing two-phase flow is handled using an Eulerian two-fluid method. Mass transfer effects are modeled based on different boiling modes such as film or nucleate boiling regime prevalent in the system. Separate computational domains constructed for the quenched solid part and the liquid (quenchant) domain are numerically coupled at the interface of the solid-liquid boundaries using the AVL-Code-Coupling-Interface (ACCI) feature. The advanced ACCI procedure allows the information pertaining to the phase change rates in the liquid domain to appear as cooling rates on the quenched solid boundaries. As a consequence, the code handles the multiphase flow dynamics in the liquid domain in conjunction with the temperature evolution in the solid region in a tightly coupled fashion. The methodology, implemented in the commercial code AVL-FIRE, is exercised in simulating the quenching of solid parts. In part I of the present research, phase change models are validated by simulating a work piece quenching process for which measurement data are available for various water temperature ranging from 20C to 80C. The computations provide a detailed description of the vapor and temperature fields in the liquid and solid domain at various time instants. In particular, the modifications arising in the liquid-vapor flow field in the near vicinity of the solid interface as a function of the boiling mode is well accommodated. The temperature history predicted by our model at different monitoring points, under different subcooling conditions, correlate very well with the experimental data wherever available. In part II, the model is further applied to real engine cylinder head quenching process and assessment is made for the cooling curves for various measuring points. Overall, the predictive capability of the new quenching model is well demonstrated.

Résumé :
Hemp concrete is one of the most used bio-based materials in the construction industry due to its hygrothermal behaviour and its low environmental footprint. This is mainly due to the complexity of the microstructure of these materials and their highly breathable nature. However, their use remains limited due to the lack of databases and guarantees regarding of the evolution of their functional properties over time. In this paper, experimental investigation has been performed to answer this problematic. The aim is to investigate the influence of accelerated aging on the properties of this material through a succession of immersion/freezing/drying cycles. Materials (aged and reference) were characterized at the same relative humidity state in order to be able to compare the results and to highlight the effect of ageing on the properties of hemp concrete. Results revealed a significant change in the microstructure of this material. As a consequence, this induced significant changes in its hygrothermal and mechanical properties. An increase of 40% in water vapour permeability and decrease of 57% in compressive strength were observed after aging (07 cycles of immersion/freezing/drying).

Résumé :
Abstract Magnesium light weight alloys are currently being studied as implants due to their biodegradability. However, its applications are limited by high rate hydrogen evolution during corrosion. Coating on this substrate is one of the ways to reduce the rate of corrosion and increase the life of this type of implant. Hence, hydroxyapatite (HA) was coated on the substrates by using high velocity oxy- fuel (HVOF) spraying. The main purpose of such coatings is increasing bioactivity as well as corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy. Crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystallinity of the coating was about 70% in which HA is dominant phase. The amounts of hydrogen gas released during magnesium corrosion tests in simulated body fluid (SBF) were measured to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the coated samples. This coating could decrease hydrogen evolution from 100 per cm2.mL to about 15 per cm2.mL after 29h of immersion time.
