AbstractThe aim of the present article is to reflect upon comparative procedures at stake in the acknowledgment of differences, following some paths of Husserl's and Heidegger's views on “comparative examination” (vergleichende Betrachtung). Although using the same expression as Husserl, Heidegger presents in this concept, rather, a phenomenology of correspondence. The encounter with otherness is described as correspondence to the immensity of the event of the world in Dasein. From out of a “destruction” of comparative examinations, it becomes possible to seize the a-subjective and ek-static structure of Dasein and claim a corresponding way of encountering otherness. In this corresponding way, the Other appears first as non-otherness, beyond a dialectics of selfhood and otherness.

The aim of this Doctoral work is double: (a) to offer the complete edition of three important distinctiones – the second, the third and the eighth – coming from the Sentence Commentary of the Franciscan John of Ripa, who lectured in Paris in the period 1354-1358. These three distinctiones constitute a homogeneous group of questions dealing with the metaphysical issues of the existence and nature of God (immensitas) in its distinction from the nature of created beings (infinitas/finitas), together with the original mechanism called replicatio unitatis divinae which regulates the generation of all created beings [Distinctio 2], the analogy between God and creatures, with the lucid restriction – consciously elaborated after Duns Scotus – of the univocity in the sole created domain [Distinctio 3], and the formal distinction between all the perfectiones originally contained in the divine essence, which do not introduce any form of multiplicity in the Unity of the supersimplex (immensa) divine essence [Distinctio 8]; (b) to offer an elaborated study of the themes present in these distinctiones, not only regarding to Ripa’s thought, but also through the analysis of related philosophical perspectives (Hugolinus of Orvieto, Pierre Ceffons, John of Mirecourt, Francis de Mayronis, Francis of Appignano, Gregory of Rimini and William of Ockham). This duplex intent is reflected in the two volumes which compose this thesis, which aims to discover the thought of a long-time underestimated philosopher. [edited by author]

Building on existing theories of sublimity and mobility, the quotidian-sublime is conceptualised as a sensation of immensity so great that it suggests infinity, catalysed by the boundlessness of daydream and emerging through the intersections of travelling body and landscape. An expanded photographic practice is employed in seeking quotidian-sublimity through art.

La première partie de cette thèse est constituée d'un roman, Cette pâle immensité , qui évoque les conditions possibles d'existence de quatre personnages dans le monde du nihilisme: Oscar Stern, un professeur de philosophie devenu presque aveugle; Ludovic Brunswick, un jeune étudiant un tantinet naïf; Andrea Sullivan, une jeune femme mélancolique; et Alba, une petite fille énigmatique et mystérieuse. Engagé par Oscar Stern pour lui servir de secrétaire particulier, Ludovic Brunswick découvre petit à petit la sombre richesse de l'existence des trois autres personnages, chacun d'entre eux se révélant progressivement plus complexe qu'au premier regard. Oeuvre perspectiviste en forme de modulations sur les thèmes du regard, du savoir, de la frigidité, de l'identité, de l'altérité et de l'amitié, Cette pâle immensité se présente comme une méditation romanesque sur la modernité, le sens de l'existence et la finitude humaine.La seconde partie de cette thèse propose une réflexion théorique sur le nihilisme, la modernité, la finitude et la création. Cet essai tente, dans un premier temps, de cerner la nature de ce que l'on appelle le nihilisme et ses corrélations avec l'avènement de la modernité, en se concentrant autour de la pensée de Nietzsche. Suivant la méditation nietzschéenne, qui veut que le nihiliste accompli s'achemine vers une éthique de la grandeur et de la création, cet essai cherchera, dans un deuxième temps, à tracer des parallèles entre l'éthique de la création de Nietzsche et les préoccupations éthiques qui se déploient dans les oeuvres essayistiques et romanesques de Robert Musil, Milan Kundera et Hubert Aquin, en cherchant à démontrer que ces auteurs ont été sensibles au phénomène du nihilisme et qu'ils ont tenté de trouver des voies d'affirmation à partir de ce qui semblait confiner à l'abattement ou au désespoir.

The core research question is: Can an auto-ethnographic approach to inquiry inform a creative process leading to an addition to knowledge? My five case studies examine my work as an artist, auto-ethnographer and storyteller who, through a range of research processes and creative installations in non-art sites, makes visible cultural landscapes that are ordinarily hidden. These case studies reflect on practitioners such as Georges Perec, Walter Benjamin, the Arte Povera movement, The Artists Placement Group (APG) Cornelia Parker, Jannis Kounellis and Richard Wilson. The aims of my research practice are to: • produce art that brings apparently uneventful and overlooked aspects of lived experience into visibility. • record ordinary lives in their everyday places for people to see now and in the future. • excavate a site-specific place through its physical, historical, psychological, social, and political contexts taking into consideration the aspects of time within the minutiae of everyday life. • interrogate, examine and create ideas for artworks in places where art is not normally practiced or seen. Whilst my methodology of working within a site is often slow and undramatic, a meticulous approach is essential, in that it allows me as an artist to develop a respect for both people and place and to illuminate the realities of everyday experience. I use the word ‘palimpsest’ to describe my process of excavating and investigating multiple layers of a place over a significant period of time. The element of time in my work is crucial regarding the autobiographical; from the historical to the contemporary; researching a place; embedding myself within a place; making the work and writing about the work after it is completed. All these different elements, which I have a strong connection to are important to my work. Time and loss are key concepts in analysing and understanding the subtext of my research and outcomes. The thinking within this text draws upon theoretical sources including Lucy Lippard’s idea of ‘weaving lived experiences’ within the ‘subject of place’ Lippard (1997), Paul Virilio's study of the ‘infra-ordinary’ and Warwick’s reflections on artists engaged with communities and Goffman's ethnographic study of asylums. Certain aspects of my methodology are borrowed from the practice of auto-ethnographers who use personal experience to examine and critique life experiences that confront pressures that exist from both inside and outside standpoints. I also use the term ‘auto-ethnography’ throughout this essay because it is appropriate to how I am either pulled towards a specific place or the way in which I research within a place. My practice involves an on-going process of questioning: the social, how and in what way is a space used? the political, what are the ramifications and political complexities of a place? psychological, how does it makes me feel? the historical, what are the historical traces and their significance? the physical, what can be seen, found and accessed? The conclusion supports the idea that art can illuminate and make visible aspects of lived experience and histories that have been buried or lie hidden. The Case Studies evidence the value and significance of an artist’s examination of the infra-ordinary within complex layers of non-art places. From my research, I am confident that the case studies contained in this essay are not only original but have no real equivalent precedent. Evidence is provided in volume 2 from arts organisations, journals, conferences, and case studies on heritage and public art that clearly demonstrate that my published works have made an original contribution to knowledge. The supporting material also substantiates how various agencies think differently about artists engagement within the public realm and in the field of heritage conservation as a consequence of my work. I believe this is an important legacy of my work above and beyond their value as art projects. This thesis is concerned with the moments, places, and circumstances in which the great magnitude of the world is felt. I live within the vast space of the spherical earth and the infinite space of the universe, however, it is rare that I consider the immensity of this space in which I live and endeavor to build. This thesis is an examination of the ability of both architecture and landscape to frame immense space and phenomena of the earth, reinforcing our relationship with the larger space that we inhabit. This work is rooted in two accounts of immensity: The first is a landscape, a beach on the small Danish island of R??m??, where I stood on a vast, flat plane, surrounded by the seemingly limitless extension of space. The second is an architectural space, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg in Northern Denmark by Finnish Architect Alvar Aalto. There I stood in an interior that framed an experience of immensity unnoticed from the exterior. The beach was for me a rare and profound experience of immense space, and the museum an architectural examination of immensity mediated by mass and interiority. I weigh these personal accounts against immensity portrayed in art, architecture, fiction, and philosophy. I consider paintings by German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, an Infinity Environment installation by contemporary artist Doug Wheeler, and the documentation of sand-filled homes in Namibia by contemporary photographers Y?? Ogata and Ichir?? Ogata Ono. I examine the portrayal of immensity in Michael Ondaatje???s novel The English Patient and Karen Blixen???s short story Babette???s Feast and consider how immensity is manifest in space, people, and architecture in the writing of philosophers and theorists Dom Hans Van der Laan, Emmanuel Levinas, and Otto Friedrich Bollnow. Lastly, I consider the role that architecture plays in framing immensity by analyzing Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and Grundtvig Church in Copenhagen by Danish architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint alongside Henry Plummer???s writing on the Salk Institute and Kimbell Art Museum by American architect Louis Kahn.

The thesis is an initial attempt to analyze my creation during 2014 to 2018. To make distinction among different levels of context involved in the artwork, I used perspectives of subjective experience, related modern artists, Phenomenology of space, Existentialism and Art Therapy in analysis. Through the discussion I hope to discover the aesthetic context and blind spots of my creation in order to dig deeper and wider. My creative process aligns with my Christian beliefs. Each artwork represents the core value I saw in my religious life at that time. The content and form were constantly changing with my Notion of “true being.” From installation art to sculpture, I tried to trigger more people’s inner dialogue through different art forms. The first chapter begins with the sense of alienation I felt from the society, and then how I started an inner dialogue with myself. In chapter two, besides comparing related modern artwork with mine, I also tried to analyze their context through art critics and artists’ life experiences in order to find my maximum possibility from them. The discussion in chapter three focuses on my own creation development from 2013 to 2018. Through analyzing my work with The Poetic of Space, I and Thou and expressive art therapies, I sought to push the boundaries of my creation. The fourth chapter is about my newest work. I’ll explain how I combined previous experience and analysis to form the new idea. The last chapter is the conclusion. After reviewing previous chapters and analysis, what is my future direction in art creating.

This chapter considers the practices of relinquishment that enable one to enter and become lost inside of what Gaston Bachelard describes as “an intimate immensity.” It gives particular attention to the work of twentieth-century artist Agnes Martin and her ideas about merging and formlessness,” about entering “a world without objects, without interruption,” and her sense of what it is to know oneself as part of something endless, infinite. It situates Martin’s work in relation to the sense of openness and freedom that Meister Eckhart, Marguerite Porete, and other Christian mystics call “living without a why.” With the help of these interlocutors, this chapter examines what it means to relinquish dependence on what Eckhart refers to as “ways” or Ruusbroec calls “modes” and open oneself to possibility of living with radical trust and beholding the other with simple openness and love.

This concluding chapter argues that one can pinpoint a broad pattern in U.S. Christianity: globalism operates in the unstable space between God-scale immensity and human-scale particularity. It is the dialogical relation between immensity and particularity that gives globalism its tensile strength and creates highly effective tools for engaged empathy, as attested by the billions of dollars that American individuals give to overseas projects each year. Christian globalism yearns for a certain kind of future. In its modern American form, these expectant hopes are inseparable from intimate human relations that are understood as an expression of, and channel for, the ultimate relation of human beings to their common Creator. This is what has driven U.S. Christians at home to support children abroad for more than 200 years. These are the aspirations, sometimes ineffable, often bodily and concrete, that make and remake global subjects.

My contribution, rooted in functional and systemic grammar, is based on the assumption that though discourse as a social behaviour and verbal interaction has been studied by great minds for decades, the dynamism of human evolution and the consequent changes in communicative strategies can hardly leave discourse analysts immune to a whole spectrum of new challenges. These are evoked by changes in the scope of items considered to be relevant for present-day research, by blurring the traditional borderlines between categories (written manifestation of spoken discourse in chatting), but before all by the existence of language corpora offering the immensity of data across genres, language varieties and language interfaces. A brief introduction (Part 1) will be followed by three main parts, focusing on reasons for multifacetedness in discourse (Part 2), whimsical nature of discourse (Part 3), and hands-on experience with overt language manifestations of vagueness, as exemplified by English placeholders (Mrs Thingy, John Whatsisname, whatchamacallit, so-and-so) emergent from the BNC and COCA corpora (Part 4). The aim is twofold: to map the facets which contribute to patterning and variation in discourse shaping, and by using authentic language data amplify the role of peripheral language devices in interaction.

L’île est un espace constamment évoqué par l’écrivain haïtienne Marie-Célie Agnant. Dans l’ensemble de son œuvre, les différents milieux aquatiques tels que l’océan et son immensité, la mer des Caraïbes entourant l’île ou les nombreux lagons, mais aussi les fleuves et les petites rivières, sont des éléments qui semblent cohabiter avec la même ampleur dans son pays natal ainsi que dans son imaginaire. En effet, cette omniprésence du liquide élémentaire constitue l’essence d’un langage poétique original, à partir duquel l’eau acquière une remarquable symbolique. En effet, Le livre d’Emma (2001) est parsemé de descriptions où les nuances de la couleur de l’eau de la mer, bleue dans ses profondeurs, des fois grise, orange et rouge au coucher de soleil, cachent des bribes de la mémoire collective du peuple haïtien. D’ailleurs, le fleuve vertèbre le voyage intérieur d’Emma, la mémoire de ses ancêtres africaines jaillit comme dans sa poésie (Balafres, 1994 ; Et puis parfois quelquefois… 2009) et devient l’eau de rivière qui coule sans cesse dans son œuvre romanesque et poétique. Enfin, notre corpus littéraire est composé de ces ouvrages que l’on considère de référence dans littérature francophone haïtienne contemporaine. De cette manière, nous proposons donc d’approfondir l’analyse de la richesse de ces métaphores qui lient l’eau à la mémoire - individuelle et collective -, en décrivant le parcours métaphorique évoquée à travers le personnage d’Emma, dans sa dimension identitaire et féminine.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/XXVColloqueAFUE.2016.3066

Abstract Sensors are widely used in the industry to collect information about a physical object. Operational range of the sensor is limited and therefore the sensor needs to be moved around a large complex part in order to capture complete information. Robot arm or manipulators can provide the degrees of freedom needed to maneuver the sensor through the complex geometry. However, a robotic arm has a limited workspace as well and cannot cover large parts. Mobile base can enhance the capability of the robotic arm by adding mobility to the arm and carrying the arm around the part. Mobile base will need to relocate around the part during the process. Relocating the mobile base increases execution time and also introduces uncertainty in the localization as mobile base moves inaccurately. It is important to reduce the number of mobile base repositioning and reduce execution time and uncertainty. In this paper, we develop a motion planner that finds the minimum number of mobile base placements in order to find robotic arm trajectories that can cover a large complex part using a RGB-D camera sensor. The planning problem, also known as optimal base sequencing, is challenging due to the immensity of the search space. The computation costs involved in inverse kinematics calculations also adds to the search time. A branch and bound search algorithm is developed with efficient branch guiding and pruning heuristics that quickly explores the search space. A capability map based method is developed to improve the search space construction time. Output of our method is an optimal sequence of base placements for the mobile base that will lead to minimum number of placements and execution time required for the process.

Dive sites which are home to various forms of marine life, unique structures and corals have become the main attraction for scuba divers. Divers normally choose the most attractive diving sites by visiting dive centers or getting referrals from other divers. However, there is problem in conventional subjective judgments where no standard measures have been considered. As a result, the judgments on dive site attractiveness may satisfy some divers but not others. To avoid these uncertainties, this research innovatively developed the world’s first index model for the attractiveness a dive site. Eight factors have been carefully selected, namely visibility, current stability, uniqueness of underwater scenery, coral health, the immensity of the coral reef, diversity and density of marine life. Then, these identified factors were ranked and assessed by using an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Evidential Reasoning (ER). Finally, all dive sites are indexed so it can be compared with others for better decision-making. To test the applicability of this proposed model, 22 dive sites in Perhentian Island were successfully assessed, indexed, and mapped. Terumbu Tiga (T3), Sail Rock and Tokong Laut were indexed as the top three dive sites in Perhentian Islands. The results also showed that the most profound factor that determined the attractiveness of a dive site was the diversity of its marine life followed by the diversity of its coral species, and the uniqueness of its underwater scenery. Practically, this model can be applied and widely used for indexing all dive sites in the world based on decision-makers’ preferences. It is expected that this index model will benefit divers, dive centers, marine parks, and related agencies by providing a new information that can be used in marine tourism.

In contemporary society, Social Design practices are crucial for the operability of aggregative solutions. Developing efficient and effective solutions that meet and enhance social needs and responsibilities, combining a greater number of values shared by different sets of individuals. In this way, the creative community must reflect on the behavioral patterns and the way to create and manage solutions able to perspective the agglutination of contexts, for this, different methods and options may be considered in the search for knowledge of experiences and ways of acting, according to social and cultural trends.This article aims to understand how the creation process influences and interconnects individual and collective thinking, in which the context of individuality and diversity is present in the analysis of the problem and, consequently, should be present in the elaboration of the design solution directed to social groups, sometimes also multicultural.These groups of people connected by a common interest, according to Godin (2013), can be considered tribes. Aware or not, the individual is part of many tribes. Tribes without unitary leader identification but create value and effects in society and in the market. In the past, one of the main factors influencing the constitution of tribes was geography. However, the globalization process has expanded and accelerated the number of tribes, which can have relevant power, but often an ephemeral character. Given the constant adaptation of ways of being, thinking, and feeling, the thought process must integrate and identify behavioral and relational models. In this sense, the development and experimentation of design must be associated with an awareness of culture and group unification. The analysis process from individual to collective must develop an exploration and critical evaluation in the face of the groups and multiculturalism. This fact encourages the applicability of Social Design, in order to guide reflection and the development of solutions framed in the multigroup problem.Creating products and services with a cultural link and with symbolic and emotional connections, according to Krucken (2009), is a challenge, considering that the final configuration of the product is a combination between essence and personality, defined consciously or not.In this framework, function (the essence) and form (the personality) play a crucial role in visualizing and strategically anticipating decision-making and design choices.Thus, considering the group individuality and group immensity, our goal is to identify models, to assess weaknesses and/or potential for success or failure, in the applicability of the process and the framing of the result in collective nuclei with identity particularities, as well as, the role that Social Design can play as a synergy binder in the thought process and the final result. The methodology will be based on a case study and literature review.
