Résumé :

The power analysis of the entire three-phase electrical system provides brief indications due to the compensation between the phases of the system of active and reactive powers. Only analysis of the electrical phases characteristics (currents, voltages, powers) of the three-phase system has theoretical and practical particular importance for balancing systems as well as analyzing the currents and powers that load the phases of the system. Akagi's "imaginary reactive power" method offers low efficiency and is polluting, introducing three order parasitic harmonics (compensating currents containing only half of the currents to be compensated) for three-phase unsymmetrical systems.

Résumé :

We study the minimal and maximal closed extension of a differential operator A on a manifold B with conical singularities, when A acts as an unbounded operator on weighted Lp-spaces over B,1 < p < ∞. Under suitable ellipticity assumptions we can define a family of complex powers A up(z), z ∈ C. We also obtain sufficient information on the resolvent of A to show the boundedness of the pure imaginary powers. Examples concern unique solvability and maximal regularity of the solution of the Cauchy problem u' - Δu = f, u(0) = 0, for the Laplacian on conical manifolds.

Résumé :

In this thesis we consider a connected locally finite graph G that possesses the Cheeger isoperimetric property. We define a decreasing one parameter family of Hardy-type spaces associated with the standard nearest neighbour Laplacian on G. We show that the space with parameter ½ is the space of all integrable functions whose Riesz transform is integrable. We show that if G has bounded geometry and the parameter is an integer, the corresponding Hardy-type space admits an atomic decomposition. We also show that if G is a homogeneous tree and the parameter is not an integer, the corresponding Hardy-type space does not admit an atomic decomposition. Furthermore, we consider the Hardy-type spaces defined in terms of the heat and Poisson maximal operators, and we analyse their relationships with the family of spaces defined previously. We also show that the space associated with the heat maximal operator is properly contained in the one associated with the heat maximal operator, a phenomenon which has no counterpart in the euclidean setting. Applications to the purely imaginary powers of the Laplacian are also given. Finally, we characterise, for every p, the class of spherical multipliers on the p-integrable functions on homogeneous trees in terms of Fourier multipliers on the torus. Furthermore we give a sharp sufficient condition on spherical multipliers on the product of homogeneous trees.

Résumé :

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude théorique mathématique des équations de Stokes et de Navier-Stokes dans un domaine borné de R^3 en utilisant la théorie des semi-groupes. Trois différents types de conditions seront considérés : des conditions aux limites de Navier, de type-Navier et des conditions qui dépendent de la pression. Ce manuscrit est composé de six chapitres. Tout d'abord nous commençons par un état de l'art sur les équations de Navier-Stokes. Ensuite nous démontrons l'analyticité du semi-groupe de Stokes avec chacune des conditions ci-dessus. Ceci permet de résoudre le problème d'évolution en utilisant la théorie des semi-groupes. Nous étudions également les puissances complexes et fractionnaires de l'opérateur de Stokes pour lesquelles nous démontrons certaines propriétés et estimations. Ces résultats seront utilisés dans la suite pour obtenir des estimations de type L^p-L^q pour le semi-groupe de Stokes, un résultat de régularité L^p-L^q maximale pour le problème de Stokes inhomogène et des résultats d'existence et d'unicité locale pour le problème non-linéaire. Après nous étudions le problème d'évolution de Stokes. Outre la régularité L^p-L^q maximale, nous démontrons l'existence des solutions faibles u∈L^q (0,T; W^(1,p) (Ω)), fortes u∈L^q (0,T; W^(2,p) (Ω)) et très faibles u∈L^q (0,T; L^p (Ω)) du problème de Stokes. On termine par l'étude du problème de Navier-Stokes avec chacune des conditions aux limites citées ci-dessus. Tout d'abord, en utilisant les estimations L^p-L^q on démontre l'existence d'une unique solution locale u qui vérifieu∈BC([0,T_0 ); L_(σ,τ)^p (Ω))∩L^q (0,T_0; L_(σ,τ)^r (Ω)), q,r>p, 2/q+3/r=3/p.De plus, pour une donnée initiale petite, on obtient l'existence globale des solutions. Ensuite en estimant le terme non-linéaire en fonction des puissances fractionnaires de l'opérateur de Stokes on démontre la régularité de la solution
This thesis is devoted to the mathematical theoretical study of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain of R^3 using the semi-group theory. Three different types of boundary conditions will be considered: Navier boundary conditions, Navier-type boundary conditions and boundary condition involving the pressure. This manuscript contains six chapters. We prove first the analyticity of the Stokes semi-group with each of the boundary conditions stated above. This allows us to solve the time dependent Stokes problem using the semi-group theory. We will study also the complex and fractional powers of the Stokes operator for which we prove some properties and estimations. These results will be used in the sequel to prove an estimate of type L^p-L^q for the Stokes semigroup, as well as the maximal L^p-L^q regularity for the inhomogeneous Stokes problem and an existence result for the non-linear problem. Next we study the time dependent Stokes problem, besides the maximal L^p-L^q regularity, we prove the existence of weak u∈L^q (0,T; W^(1,p) (Ω)), strong u∈L^q (0,T; W^(2,p) (Ω)) and very weak u∈L^q (0,T; L^p (Ω)) solutions to the Stokes problem. We end with the study of the Navier-Stokes problem. First using the L^p-L^q estimate for the Stokes semi-group we prove the existence of a unique local in time mild solution for the Navier-Stokes problem that verifies u∈BC([0,T_0 ); L_(σ,τ)^p (Ω))∩L^q (0,T_0; L_(σ,τ)^r (Ω)), q,r>p, 2/q+3/r=3/p.Furthermore, for some initial data the solution is global in time. Finally, by estimating the non-linear term as a function of the fractional powers of the Stokes operator we prove that the solution is regular

Résumé :

This study focuses on the booking agencies in Sweden and their point of view on the reality with a focal point from the mass media perspective, which says that they have become rather wealthy because of the changes within the music business. The mass media describes the booking agencies situation as golden because of the economical and technological changes that more or less have paralysed the record industry. The study is performed with a qualitative approach and is based on interviews with relevant individuals from eight different Swedish booking agencies. These individuals have been chosen to match as many different segments in the booking agency business as possible. On account of the qualitative approach it is difficult to generalize the conclusion of the study. We have nevertheless noted some tendencies that the technological development has had a strong impact on the everyday situations for the booking agencies. These will be presented in chapter five.

Esta pesquisa é um estudo documental do construto sócio-cultural “índio” no imaginário e na ideologia da sociedade e do poder brasileiro, durante a ditadura civil-militar que começou em 1964 e teve seu final em 1985. O objetivo é individualizar os componentes epistemológicos e dos grupos de significantes que compõem a rica polissemia do objeto de estudo: o índio imaginário. Se tem tido em conta a diversidade dos atores que compõem o sujeito de estudo, desde os militares, o indigenismo oficial, a legislação, os habitantes da fronteira, a opinião pública, acadêmicos, sertanistas e religiosos. O índio mostra-se nesta pesquisa como um potente gerador de símbolos das mais diversas naturezas, mas sempre com a intencionalidade de supor um espelho invertido e oposto à própria sociedade/poder nacional. A categoria colonial que lhe deu vida, segue presente na sua proposta como um exotismo enfrentado ao projeto civilizador da Modernidade que anseia Brasil como Estado-nação e também como sociedade ocidental. Ao mesmo tempo, se apresenta também como um poderoso teatro de símbolos onde se (des)encontram a ideologia militar e sua oposição. Todo isso dentro do esforço que Brasil experimenta por achar sua própria narrativa e lhe dar uma posição frente aos desafios que gera o mundo contemporâneo, que no caso brasileiro, acha sua conjuntura chave durante a ditadura civil-militar. Esta pesquisa é puramente documental tendo como referencia teórica o pensamento “decolonial”, a historia sócio-cultural, a interdisciplinaridade, a multirreferencialidade e a complexidade. A documentação analisada esta dividida em três categorias: a oficial gerada pelo Estado e seu aparelho burocrático e legislativo; o material criado pelas instituições não necessariamente ligadas ao Estado como a Igreja Católica, movimentos sociais e ONGs; e a produção cultural/intelectual que percorre desde a imprensa da época, material audiovisual, literatura culta e popular assim como o produzido pelos acadêmicos, missionários, políticos, ativistas, lideranças/movimentos indígenas, etc. Os resultados obtidos demonstram a fortíssima relação que mantêm Brasil com sua mais característica e passional alteridade, e como sua situação de ambivalência da fé de como o país tropical tem procurado incessantemente se interpretar a se mesmo a partir de se olhar nesse espelho que era o índio. Tendo como resultado final, o revesti-lo necessariamente do papel de oposição ontológica a partir de sua “bestialização”, naturalização e “folclorização”.
RESUMEN Esta investigación es un estudio documental del constructo socio-cultural “indio” en el imaginario y la ideología de la sociedad y el poder brasileño, durante la dictadura civil-militar que comenzó en 1964 y tuvo su fin en 1985. El objetivo es individualizar los componentes epistemológicos y los grupos de significantes que componen la rica polisemia del objeto de estudio: el indio imaginado. Se han tenido en cuenta la diversidad de actores que componen el sujeto de estudio, desde los militares, el indigenismo oficial, la legislación, los habitantes de la frontera, la opinión pública, académicos, sertanistas y religiosos. El indio se muestra en esta investigación como un potente generador de símbolos de las más diversas naturalezas, pero siempre con la intencionalidad de suponer un espejo invertido y oposicional a la propia sociedad/poder nacional. La categoría colonial que le dio vida, sigue presente en su propuesta como un exotismo enfrentando al proyecto civilizador de la Modernidad que anhela Brasil como Estado-nación y también como sociedad occidental. Al mismo tiempo, se presenta también como un poderoso teatro de símbolos donde se (des)encuentran la ideología militar y su oposición. Todo ello inmerso en el esfuerzo que Brasil experimenta por encontrar su propia narrativa y darle un encaje frente a los desafíos que genera el mundo contemporáneo, que en el caso brasileño, encuentra su coyuntura clave durante la dictadura-civil militar. Esta investigación es puramente documental teniendo como referencia teórica el pensamiento “decolonial”, la historia socio-cultural, la interdisciplinariedad, la multirreferencialidad y la complejidad. La documentación analizada está dividida en tres categorías: la oficial generada por el Estado y su aparato burocrático y legislativo; el material generado por instituciones no necesariamente ligadas al Estado como es la Iglesia Católica, movimientos sociales y ONGs; y la producción cultural/intelectual que recorre desde la prensa de la época, material audiovisual, literatura culta y popular así como lo producido por académicos, misioneros, políticos, activistas, líderes/movimientos indígenas, etc. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la fuertísima relación que mantiene Brasil con su más característica y pasional otredad, y como su situación de ambivalencia da fe de cómo el país tropical ha buscado incesantemente interpretarse a sí mismo a partir de mirarse en ese espejo que era el indio. Dando como resultado final, el revestirlo necesariamente del rol de oposición ontológica a partir de su bestialización, naturalización y “folclorización”
ABSTRACT This research is a documentary study of the socio-cultural construct “indio” in the imaginary and the ideology of Brazilian society and power, during the civil-military dictatorship that began in 1964 and ended in 1985. The objective is to individualize the epistemological components and the groups of signifiers that make up the rich polysemy of the object of study: the imagined “indio”. It has taken into account the diversity of actors that make up the subject of study, from the army, official indigenism, legislation, border people, public opinion, academics, sertanists and religious. The “indio” is shown in this research as a powerful generator of symbols of the most diverse natures, but always with the intention of assuming an inverted mirror and opposed to the national society/power itself. The colonial category that gave life to it, is still present in its proposal as an exoticism that face the civilizing project of Modernity that longs for Brazil as a nation-state and also as a Western society. At the same time, it also presents itself as a powerful theater of symbols where the military ideology and its opposition meet. All this is immersed in the effort that Brazil is experimenting to find its own narrative and give it a fit in front of the challenges that the contemporary world generates, which in the Brazilian case, finds its key juncture during the civil-military dictatorship. This research is purely documentary having as theoretical reference the "decolonial" thought, the socio-cultural history, the interdisciplinarity, the multi-referentiality and the complexity. The documentation analyzed is divided into three categories: the official sources generated by the State and its bureaucratic and legislative apparatus; the material generated by institutions not necessarily linked to the State such as the Catholic Church, social movements and NGOs; and cultural/intellectual production that travels from the press of the time, audio-visual material, cultured and popular literature as well as produced by academics, missionaries, politicians, activists, indigenous leaders/movements, etc. The results obtained demonstrate the very strong relationship that Brazil maintains with its most characteristic and passionate otherness, and as its ambivalence situation testifies to how the tropical country has sought incessantly to interpret itself from looking at itself in that mirror that was the “indio”. With the final result, it is necessarily covered by the ontological opposition from its “bestialization”, naturalization and “folklorization”.

Le but de ce travail est l'étude d'un problème de transmission en dynamique de population entre deux habitats juxtaposés. Dans chacun des habitats, on considère une équation aux dérivées partielles, modélisant la dispersion généralisée, formée par une combinaison linéaire du laplacien et du bilaplacien. On commence d'abord par étudier et résoudre la même équation avec diverses conditions aux limites posée dans un seul habitat. Cette étude est effectuée grâce à une formulation opérationnelle du problème: on réécrit cette EDP sous forme d'équation différentielle, posée dans un espace de Banach construit sur les espaces Lp avec 1 < p < +∞, où les coefficients sont des opérateurs linéaires non bornés. Grâce au calcul fonctionnel, à la théorie des semi-groupes analytiques et à la théorie de l'interpolation, on obtient des résultats optimaux d'existence, d'unicité et de régularité maximale de la solution classique si et seulement si les données sont dans certains espaces d'interpolation
The aim of this work is the study of a transmission problem in population dynamics between two juxtaposed habitats. In each habitat, we consider a partial differential equation, modeling the generalized dispersion, made up of a linear combination of Laplacian and Bilaplacian operators. We begin by studying and solving the same equation with various boundary conditions in a single habitat. This study is carried out using an operational formulation of the problem: we rewrite this PDE as a differential equation, set in a Banach space built on the spaces Lp with 1 < p < +∞, where the coefficients are unbounded linear operators. Thanks to functional calculus, analytic semigroup theory and interpolation theory, we obtain optimal results of existence, uniqueness and maximum regularity of the classical solution if and only if the data are in some interpolation spaces

Résumé :

For several years I have photographed primary hardwood forests along the imaginary line of the equator to communicate, persuade and warn of the continued ecological destruction that is occurring along this line. My plan was to capture arcadian visions of equatorial hardwood primary forests before they are destroyed and to show how this arcadian vision is disrupted by a more dystopian one. The images in this project were photographed in three areas that circle the equator: Southeast Asia, Africa and South America, where over half the world's rainforests are concentrated, and which I visited to follow the line. Line is an attempt to understand the current pressures on the equatorial environment and create a photographic exploration of ecology that highlights and foregrounds land, space, territories, boundaries and power. For this, myfield of study and research considers ecology through the theory and lens of photography.

Esta tese discute o silenciamento de vozes em uma dada contextualização do ethos jornalístico na produção de noticiário em jornais de Posadas e Porto Alegre, e investiga a cobertura realizada pelos veículos em relação ao projeto de construção de duas hidrelétricas na fronteira entre os dois países, Brasil e Argentina, no rio Uruguai, denominadas complexo de Garabi- Panambi. Três grandes eixos sustentam esse trabalho: o conhecimento sobre o meio-ambiente, o ethos jornalístico e a cena social do acontecimento Garabi. O saber ambiental foi tratado desde a sua origem na teoria marxista que descreve a separação do homem da natureza pelo trabalho, a falha metabólica presente até hoje no cerne da questão da crise ambiental do século XXI. O ethos jornalístico e seus valores e essência foram recuperados historicamente, perfazendo um trajeto que se inicia na modernidade, onde o Jornalismo ganhou a forma atual, e chegando aos dias de hoje, quando a atividade enfrenta o desafio de conseguir dar conta da complexidade e das falhas decorrentes do processo discursivo de uso da linguagem jornalística. Para compreender o contexto social em que transcorre o acontecimento Garabi- Panambi, foi feita uma investigação jornalística com o método de apuração para produção de reportagem. Esta reportagem-ensaio trouxe a voz dos ribeirinhos, suas histórias e culturas, estabelecendo a polifonia de vozes. Foram analisados os discursos do noticiário de quatro jornais: Zero Hora, Correio do Povo, Primera Edición e El Territorio. O resultado dessa análise aponta a ausência da voz dos ribeirinhos que seriam atingidos pelo projeto. Conclui-se que o Jornalismo dá uma grande contribuição para a discussão da complexidade ambiental se estiver centrado em um ethos que considere efetivamente a possibilidade de liberdade no acaso e na contingência dos discursos e dos saberes que estão contidos na expressão do pensamento, na formação de imagens, no devir dos sentidos, no sentir das emoções. A força das imagens naturais e dos saberes não científicos comporia este ethos. Um ethos que aceite e estimule a necessidade de interação com o ambiente e os seres vivos. Com a reflexão desta contextualização sobre o território e seus habitantes, e com as teorias do Jornalismo, Ambientalismo, Análise do Discurso e Imaginário, recortamos conceitos para fazer um retrato do universo simbólico que envolve jornalistas e ribeirinhos. Postula-se que a imersão no natural e em suas imagens é determinante para a formação de saberes jornalísticos que produzam sentidos múltiplos e complexos, acolhendo outros conhecimentos da sociedade em que o jornalista está inserido e onde ele exerce seu ofício.
The main objectives of this thesis is to discuss the issue of discursive silencing in a given context of the journalistic ethos in newspapers of Posadas and Porto Alegre, investigating the coverage carried by the vehicles in relation to the projects for the construction of the two hydro power plants on the border between the two countries, Brazil and Argentina, on the River Uruguay – the complex Garabi-Panambi. The absence of the voice of the riverside population that will be affected by the project is the main result of the analysis of the speeches of the four newspapers: Zero Hora, Correio do Povo, Primera Edición and El Territorio. To build the social context, we worked with three main theoretical fields of knowledge. Environmental knowledge was studied since its Marxist origin – the separation of man from nature through work; this metabolic failure is still today the heart of the matter of the environmental crisis of the 21st century. The journalistic ethos and its values and essence were recovered historically, making a path that begins in the modern years, when journalism gained its present form, and coming up to the present day, when the activity faces the challenge of succeeding in being able to account for the complexity and failures resulting from the discursive process of language use. To understand the environment in which takes place the Garabi-Panambi event, we employed a journalistic investigation and calculated the production of news. This story-essay brought the voice of the riparian, their histories and cultures, establishing the polyphony of voices. We pointed out that journalism would be a great contribution to the complexity of the environmental discussion were it centered on an ethos that effectively considered the possibility of freedom in what is left to chance and in the contingency of discourses and knowledges that are contained in the expression of thought, in imaging, in the becoming of senses, in feeling. The strengths of natural images and of the non-scientific knowledge compose this ethos. An ethos that supports and stimulates the need for interaction with the environment and living beings. With the reflection of this context on the territory and its inhabitants, and with the theories of Journalism, Environmentalism, Discourse Analysis and of the Imaginary, we gathered concepts to make a picture of the symbolic universe that surrounds journalists and the riverside population. We affirm that immersion in the natural and its images is crucial for the formation of a journalistic knowledge that forms multiple and complex senses, welcoming other knowledge societies where the journalist is inserted and where he exercises his craft.

Si sostiene che il luogo in cui un processo di pianificazione viene attuato sia un potente fattore di stabilizzazione per quanto riguarda le pratiche sociali e l'identità del luogo. Quindi, i luoghi non sono volumi fisici; essi portano caratteristiche intangibili attraverso la stabilizzazione dell'identità e dell'attività sociale. In altre parole, hanno un immaginario collettivo. This research has an objective of exploring the role of social imaginaries in an urban context with a strategic goal to contribute to the urban planning theory especially with its current dedicated efforts to facing the existing urban challenges. The significance of power relations in the planning process, which are still ambiguous is a key element when interpreting the impact of urban planning processes. The place where a planning process is implemented is claimed to be a powerful stabilizing factor with regards to social practices and place identity. Therefore, places are not physical volumes; they carry intangible characteristics through stabilizing the identity and social activity. In other words, they have collective imaginary. Urban planning deals with place as a planning object excluding some of its particular characteristics such as its specifications, its type, its identity, the social practices that are held in a place and its regulations. This research aims for mapping and understanding the underlying imaginaries of a place undergoing an urban planning process in the Global South urban context. It argues that a phenomenon such as street vending can be better explained and analyzed when place imaginaries are at play to explain the changes in power relations.

AbstractIn recent literature, much attention has been paid to factors that affect nuclear deterrence and stability from the outside: new missile defence systems, non-nuclear (conventional) high-precision long-range weapons, the influence of third and threshold nuclear states, space weapons, and—more recently—cyber threats. These new factors have pushed the core of nuclear deterrence—strategic relations between Russia and the United States—to the background in the public consciousness. Yet dangerous changes are taking place. This chapter examines the real and imaginary causes of the current situation and suggests potential ways to reduce tensions that could benefit international security. It concludes that nuclear deterrence can serve as a pillar of international security with one crucial reservation: namely, that it can only work in conjunction with negotiations and agreements on the limitation, reduction, and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Without such checks, nuclear deterrence goes berserk. It endlessly fuels the arms race, brings the great powers to the brink of nuclear war in any serious crisis, and sometimes the very dynamics of nuclear deterrence can instigate a confrontation.

Historically the imaginary and the hegemonic thinking, in the Western North globe has been marked by the epistemology and capitalists archetypes. Notwithstanding the design as a practice and discipline seem shielded on a simplistic discourse of functional / communicative efficiency, wandering through multiple aestheticism apparently neutral in relation to the symbolic but in fact they never are because what really happens is that the aesthetic appearance of the generated forms will always be a review of the powers ruling. We start from understanding that the act of creating an aesthetic artefact will also be a movement of inscription in a discursive platform (that precedes it) thus being itself an narrative act and representing a positioning in relation to certain symbolic reality. On the presented reflection Design is seen as a discipline and / or an instrument of action, whose operational relevance tends to question and simultaneously rehearsing a response to not just the question why but also for what? Apparently Design is a content mediator, but also, it is structure, body and idea. We think design praxis as discipline and enrolment tool for critical thought and social transformation. For guiding research in this text, we propose the following question: Can Design form an engagement with the symbolic for them in order to be an active part in the production of critical thinking in the place where it belongs? Methodologically our argument will be present in two different moments: 1. first, exploratory nature where we rescue the draw issues in the practice of design and 2. second, analytical nature concerning the subject issues (graphic and / or utility ) of design and how it incorporates formal rites, political events and social practices of contemporary everyday life. We consider the praxis of design as a discipline and critical thinking enrolment tool as agents of social transformation. Hydraulic energy is constructed from real and imaginary energies. Their acting directions are normal to each other. Their physical properties are quite different. All the physical parameters, such as force, velocity, and acceleration therefore consist of two different type real and imaginary functions. Turbomachinery shrouded rotor blade design has been widely used in fans, compressors, and turbines. By using either tip or mid-span shroud, the blade structural damping and natural frequencies can be increased to reduce flutter or forced response problems. However, shrouded rotor blade design sometimes results in complex system modes with both bending and torsion present at the same time. Since shrouded rotors are rotationally periodic, the bending and torsion combined system mode can be decomposed into a real component and an imaginary component. Using both the real and imaginary mode shapes, coupled with the blade surface flow-field, a complex mode analysis was developed using a modal solution to determine the forced response of the system. This complex mode analysis was applied to both tip and mid-span shrouded rotor blade applications. Bending-dominated or torsion-dominated simple blade modes in general can be analyzed using an existing single mode approach. However, for the bending and torsion combined system modes, the single mode analysis can be misleading. By using the complex mode analysis, it was demonstrated that the combined bending and torsion system mode plays an important role in determining the blade forced response.

This Letter considers probability density functions (pdfs) involving products of the complex amplitudes observed at two points (which may, in general, involve separations in space, time, or frequency) in conditions of fully saturated scattering. First, the pdf is derived for the product of the complex amplitude at one point with the conjugate of the complex amplitude at another point. It is shown that the real and imaginary parts of this product each have a variance gamma pdf. Second, expressions are derived for several joint pdfs involving complex amplitude products and powers at two points.

Résumé :

This paper looks at the importance of ‘crisis events’ used by leaders employing populist civilisational populism in Muslim democracies. While populism is widely acknowledged and studied as part of early twentieth century political developments, various aspects remain unexplored. One feature is how populists make use of a crisis. While populists do benefit from social and political rifts, this paper goes a step further and argues that civilisationalist populists create imaginary and exaggerated ‘crises’ to sustain and prolong their relevance/position in power as well as justify their undemocratic actions. Using the case studies of Turkey (Recep Tayyip Erdogan) and Pakistan (Imran Khan) allows for a comparison to be drawn between two different leaders seeking to maintain power by using their position to either create civilizationalist crises or to frame ordinary crises as civilisational. The findings highlight that despite different political scenarios and outcomes, both these populist leaders gained political support by creating crises. We find that in most cases, populists exaggerate pre-existing insecurities and events to their benefit. The overblown claims and conspiratorial scenarios aid populists in creating a niche for their narratives by reaffirming their populist categorisation of societies. At the same time, the findings bring forth the troubling issues of the social-political cost of these Islamist civilisationalist populists.
