Résumé :
In this study, basic techniques which are used in botanical illustration are examined. Undoubtedly the most basic and accessible technique for the illustration artists is pencil and ink. Artists who have been drawing for years have used this technique with the decorations on the books and although technological developments present us unlimited opportunities today, basic illustration techniques; pencil, ink and watercolour technique has kept its place. It is necessary for this basic illustration technique to contain main features such as line, tone, colour, texture, shape, size. Just as all the artists who are dealing with illustration, artists-scientists who are dealing with botanic have also benefited from these techniques. as a result, no matter if it serves for art or for science, these techniques have always had an important place in creation of visual data for the development of humanity.    Keywords: Botanical Illustration, botanical illustration techniques, watercolour techniques, charcoal drawing technique, ink technique, gouache painting technique, ekolin.

Résumé :
Alternative approaches in illustration language have constantly been developing in terms of material and technical aspects. Illustration languages also differ in terms of semantics and form. Differences in formal expressions for increasing the effect of the subject on the audience lead to diversity in the illustrations. M. C. Escher’s three-dimensional images to be perceived in a two-dimensional environment, together with mathematical and symmetry-oriented studies and the systematic formed by a numerical structure in its background, are associated with the notion of illustration in terms of fictional meaning. Istvan Orosz used the technique of anamorphosis and made it possible for people to see their perception abilities and visual perception sensitivities in different environments created by him. This study identifies new approaches and illustration languages based on the works of both artists, bringing an alternative proposition to illustration languages in terms of systematic sub-structure and fictional idea sketches. Keywords: Perception, illusion, illustration, fictional illustration, illustration languages, visual perception.

Résumé :
The article, which is based on visual research, examines the issue of infantilism in contemporary illustration, specifically what has caused it. This study provides an explanation for why we have illustrations not only drawn in the same technique, but also depicting the same things. Our world is increasingly explained by pictures. It is logical to track the trends in modern society through pictures, or rather, to consider the works of artists and track their train of thought. The examples and patterns described in the study lead us to the fact that now the world and Russian illustration is filled with infantilism, making up a whole current. This is indicated by the technique, the work with characters, the choice of subjects and even the color used by artists who create infantile images. On the basis of which in the article the author suggests "infantilism" as a definition of the direction in modern illustration.

Résumé :
This article reviews the collaboration between clinician and illustrator throughout the ages while highlighting the era of cardiac surgery. Historical notes are based on Professor Sanjib Kumar Ghosh’s extensive review, literature searches, and the archives of the Johns Hopkins University Department of Art as related to Medicine in Baltimore. Personal communications were explored with medical illustrators and medical practitioners, many of whom are colleagues and trainees, to further chronicle the history of medical illustration and education in the era of cardiac surgery. Medical illustrators use their talents and expressive ideas to demonstrate procedures and give them life. These methods are (1) hovering technique; (2) hidden anatomy, ghosted views, or transparency; (3) centrally focused perspective; (4) action techniques to give life to the procedure; (5) use of insets to highlight one part of the drawing; (6) human proportionality using hands or known objects to show size; and (7) step-by-step educational process to depict the stages of a procedure. Vivid examples showing these techniques are demonstrated. The result of this observational analysis underscores the importance of the collaboration between clinician and illustrator to accurately describe intricate pathoanatomy, three-dimensional interrelated anatomic detail, and complex operations. While there are few data to measure the impact of the atlas on medical education, it is an undeniable assertion that anatomical and surgical illustrations have helped to educate and train the modern-day surgeon, cardiologist, and related health-care professionals.

Résumé :
In this article, I introduce the device of close reading in historical academic contexts through to contemporary queer-theoretical thought and open this up to illustration research and practice. Illustration seeks to capture the paradox of the representable and the unseen; this puts an emphasis on illustration as elucidating. For this reason, its historical origins in illumination remain core to how the subject is taught. However, if we are asking illustrators to illuminate and offer clarity on a subject, should we also ask what is being concealed? It is my intention to explore how illustration methods have the capacity to bring overlooked histories to the fore and consider what an illustrative close reading practice may offer as a visual historicizing technique.

Résumé :
The article presents the findings of the psycholinguistic experiments based on the semantic differential technique. The experiments’ objective was to identify the effect of illustration on a verbal text perception. We compared the respondents’ assessment of verbal texts and illustrated texts (with illustrations in major and minor color schemes). The data analysis reveals seven factors: Assessment , Naturalness , Strength , Imagery , Romanticism , Dynamism , Commonality . We identified the illustrations parameters affecting the assessment of creolized texts: adding any illustration, the illustration color scheme matching the verbal text content, the color scheme naturalness, the illustration color scheme matching the text emotional and semantic dominant, the use of minor color scheme. The most pragmatic potential was identified in the parameter “(non)matching the color scheme with the semantic dominant of the text” (it is important for the assessment of five out of seven factors). We found that both conformity ( Strength factor assessment) and inconsistency (for Dynamism , Imagery , Romance , Evaluation factors assessment) can be significant. The text creolization increases its Imagery and changes Romanticism factors. The color scheme matching the image content increases the text Naturalness assessment, and an unnatural color scheme decreases it. There was a decrease in Assessment if a minor color scheme was used.

<p>Hand-made stippling has been used frequently in the process of drawing illustrations for documenting archaeological pieces. This is due to the fact that this technique represents in an efficient way shapes, tones, and textures, by means of distributing dots on the paper. The process of stippling has needed traditionally the ability of an artist, who usually produces the illustration from photographs. In this paper, a program that generates stippling illustrations of high quality is presented. The developed interface makes possible that any user can generate illustrations without the need of artistic abilities. The program is able to work in realtime, allowing the user interacts with the program. We have developed several artistic techniques in high level tasks that allow to improve the final results.</p>

Résumé :
From the conception of photographic art as a visual text, which narrates, informs and promotes interactions, this article aims to reflect on the potential of photography as an illustrative tool. Thus, it is understood that a literary work illustrated from photographic images allows the expansion of interpretative and dialogical limits between the reader and the work. Adele Enersen's work When my baby dreams was chosen for the investigation, a narrative composed of scenarios created manually using homemade artifacts and captured through the photographic record. Under a qualitative approach, the bibliographic research methodology was chosen, which took place through an interpretative analysis that allowed us to observe the means and instruments used in the composition of the work. As a theoretical basis, it relies on the studies of Santaella (2012), Flusser (2000) and Manguel (2001) on materiality, photography and literature as well as other authors that contemplate the themes. In this perspective, we seek to expand the principles of photographic materiality and identify the potential of its use as a literary illustration. It is concluded that storytelling combined with photographic illustrations contributes significantly to the reading comprehension and involvement of the reader, highlighting the materiality of the photographic image as an important characteristic of the literary illustration technique.

Résumé :
ArgumentBiological drawings of newly described or revised species are expected to represent the type specimen with greatest possible accuracy. In taxonomic practice, illustrations assume the function of mobile representatives of relatively immobile specimens. In other words, such illustrations serve as “immutable mobiles” in the Latourian sense. However, the significance of drawing in the context of first descriptions goes far beyond that of illustration in the conventional sense. Not only does it synthesize the verbal catalogue of the type's morphological characteristics: it also enables the examination of these traits. The efficacy of drawing is thus closely related to its power to direct and redirect observation; it is inextricably bound up with the act of making a drawing. Although the invariance of the “immutable mobiles” is a key virtue of the logistics of “paperwork,” the recovery of graphic knowledge requires a much stronger dynamic activity – a process of sequential processing that brings out differences by translating the phenomenon under examination into various modes of graphic representation.

This article discusses the illustrations from the novel "Anak Rantau" by A. Fuadi, intended as a catalyst for solutions to address issues related to teenage reading interest (literacy) and moral crisis. The illustrations aim to motivate teenagers to engage in reading. By presenting illustrations from the novel "Anak Rantau," it is hoped that teenagers will be intrigued to understand the novel's content, resulting in moral outcomes aligned with the ethical values conveyed by the novel. The illustrations employed in this work are of the digital kind, reflecting the advancements in digitally based illustration techniques in this era of globalization. The technique involves a manual combination executed with the assistance of the Medibang application for digitization. Pens, watercolors, and oil pastels serve as the tools and materials used to sketch, color, and finalize the artwork, which is then transferred onto a digital canvas measuring 40 x 60 cm. From this discussion, it can be concluded that this work constitutes illustrations as an alternative solution, employing an approach that utilizes illustrations as catalysts to enhance reading quality, ultimately culminating in the moral improvement of teenagers

Résumé :
The article analyzes the technique of watercolor in illustrations of children’s books of the 1980s—2020s by Soviet and modern Russian artists. There is traced the influence of modern technologies on children’s book illustrations made in the watercolor technique. In the context of current artistic trends, the article examines the connections of social processes and book graphics; the features of the technical development of book design; the combination of various visual materials with the technique of “watercolor” in the conditions of information technology; new technological and technical approaches; the author’s vision of an illustrated work. The main method used is the analysis of the works of Soviet and modern illustrators of children’s books: V.V. Pertsov, N.E. Popov, A.V. Kokovkin, V.G. Britvin, V.V. Pavlova, A.A. Koshkin, E.A. Silina, Ya.M. Sedova, A.A. Desnitskaya, O. Demidova, V. Pomidor, A.Ya. Lomaev. The relevance of this topic is determined by the intensive introduction of digital technologies into book art and the transformation of the traditional watercolor technique, and the topic’s novelty is based on the lack of formulation of the mentioned issues in the context of children’s book watercolor illustration. Modern technologies make it possible to implement any creative idea of the artist, who, being able to freely interpret the literary work, is now an active participant in the creation of a book image. Absence of censorship imposes a certain responsibility for the quality of illustrations on the artist, since it affects the perception of the child. Thus, forming the aesthetic taste of the younger generation, the artist becomes a participant in the educational process. The analysis of the watercolor illustration showed that the artist is faced with a difficult task, which is associated not only with the ability to use technological and technical innovations, understand the principle of modern computer programs, reinforce the visual series with knowledge of the historical context, but also to know and understand how children’s consciousness works and how to instill good taste in a child.

Abstract BACKGROUND Vertical perithalamic hemispherotomy was introduced by Olivier Delalande in 1992 as an alternative concept of functional hemispherectomy. OBJECTIVE To provide a step-by-step illustration of the surgical anatomy of this procedure. METHODS The descriptions in this manuscript are based on an experience of 52 hemispherotomies performed with the same technique by a single surgeon. RESULTS Our illustrations of the surgical anatomy and the descriptions of the surgical nuances facilitate a deep understanding for the surgical concept of Delalande's vertical hemispherotomy technique. They highlight the advantages (ie, reduced risk of inadvertent damage to the contralateral hemisphere and a clear orientation by defined anatomical landmarks) over the recently suggested modifications to this original technique. CONCLUSION Olivier Delalande's original technique remains the most appealing concept of vertical hemispherotomy to us.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the problem of revising assessment of the work of the outstanding British engraver and publisher Thomas Bewick. Traditionally, it is considered in the context of the general history of engraving development, mostly not connected with either animalistics or scientific editions. In this regard, T. Bewick’s works of artistic significance belong to natural-scientific illustrations and are used in popular science editions. The erroneous assessment of his works is associated with a widespread stereotype in which scientific illustration is considered as something of low artistic value. The purpose of this research is to study the genesis of T. Bewick’s creativity by analyzing his main works. Of particular interest is the research of the artistic features of woodcut technique, which, thanks to T. Bewick, has found a new life. It is traced the evolution of the engraver’s work from his early period to mature one. The complexity of Bewick’s talent is noted not only as an engraver of book illustrations, but also as an engraver of bookplates. The characteristic of the technique of cutting a design into hardwood cut across is given, the innovative methods thanks to which Bewick has brought this type of an engraving to a new level of book illustration are revealed. Based on the memoirs of Bewick, the author traces the history of the creation of his main books — “A General History of the Quadrupeds” and “A History of British Birds”. It is noted that illustrations by G. Buffon and H. White served as additional sources for “A History of British Birds” despite the use of his own sketches. The author analyses the illustrations and engravings from these books, which are kept in the collections of the Research and Scientific Department of Rare Books (Museum of Book) of the Russian State Library. The structural features of the brief descriptions of “A General History of the Quadrupeds” are considered. Particular attention is paid to the style of the vignettes, which present an integral part of Bewick’s creative credo. Such features of Bewick’s illustrations as realism, as well as the depiction of humorous genre scenes and jokes are revealed. The author notes that at a late stage of Bewick’s art work he rarely uses black cross-hatching, using instead combinations of the wide fields and carefully engraved white spots. The most essential features of Bewick’s engraving are revealed: the principle of “white line”, hatching with crossed and parallel lines, creation of halftones with very thin strokes and tiny dots. It is emphasized that although Bewick’s illustrations have been published in popular scientific publications, they have influenced the development of scientific illustration through their highly artistic execution. It is concluded that woodcut technique allowed to simulate the volume of an image by means of a white stroke.

Résumé :
The authors present a new measurement methodology of perceived value, based on latent structure multidimensional scaling, that derives simultaneously the underlying dimensions of the perceived value of various brands and market segment heterogeneity in terms of how such value evaluations are made. This latent structure, ordered probit, multidimensional scaling (MDS) based methodology improves on existing industry techniques of illustrating perceived customer value because it enables researchers to infer the underlying dimensions of perceived value from the data without specifying these a priori, as is common in existing methods. The authors compare the proposed model against more traditional MDS approaches in an empirical illustration involving the perceived value of compact cars. Finally, the authors discuss managerial implications of this technique and provide directions for further research.

Résumé :
We present the multispin coding for the nonequilibrium reweighting method of the Monte Carlo simulation, that was developed by the present authors. As an illustration, we treat the driven diffusive lattice gas model. We use the multispin coding technique both for the spin update and for the calculation of the histogram of incremental weights, which is needed in the calculation of nonequilibrium reweighting. All the operations are executed by the bitwise logical commands.

Abstracttitle ABSTRACT /title The article analyses Fabio Colonna's interest in natural history illustration. The re-examination of several pieces of unjustly neglected documentary evidence has allowed us to focus on the essential role of naturalistic illustration in the work of this Neapolitan naturalist. Of great importance was the opportunity to study a herbal that was recently discovered at Blickling Hall, near Norwich in England. This herbal was created using the technique of nature-printing, and reflects Colonna's interest in naturalistic illustration as an essential means of presenting natural data.

In this short communication the main ideas of the method of equivalent linearization and dual conception are further extended to suggest a new technique for solving nonlinear differential equations. This technique allows improving the accuracy when the nonlinearity is strong and getting nonlinear features of responses. For illustration the Duffing oscillator is considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Résumé :
Abstract This article investigates the genesis and significance of the book published in 1967 by John Collier, Jr. (1913–1992), who proposed a new visual approach to anthropology. After an initiation into painting in the 1930s, he had switched to photography and was soon involved in undertakings that brought him into contact with other cultures. So he began to understand and use the camera as an eminently research technique. In a period of rampant modernization, he identified his mission in defending them from assimilation to the Western life model, and in enhancing their peculiar “energy.” The first section shows how the book was laboriously written and which reactions it aroused. Since Visual Anthropology resembles a travel report about visited places, the second section briefly recounts the experiences that led to its drafting. The third section follows Collier’s subsequent activity and outlines how the American anthropological community has since taken up his proposal.
