Résumé :
This paper focuses on Sufi attitudes towards Jews and Christians in Late Ayyubid and Early Mamluk Egypt, as reflected in hagiographic literature of the time. This will shed further light on interfaith relations in a society where Jews and Christians lived under Islamic rule in the condition of ahl al-dhimma (lit. “protected people”), implying an overall condition of social and juridical inferiority. With this in mind, works by four prominent Sufi authors have been analyzed: al-Risāla by Shaykh Ṣafī l-Dīn ibn Abī l-Manṣūr (d. 1283), al-Kitāb al-waḥīd by Shaykh Ibn Nūḥ al-Qūṣī (d. 1308), Laṭāʾif al-minan by Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh al-Iskandarī (d. 1309), Durrat al-asrār by Ibn al-Ṣabbāgh (fl. 1320s). This first survey shows a wide variety of attitudes towards Jews and Christians, ranging from interreligious violence to dialogue for converting and also to mutual respect, while adhering to the principles of dhimma and maintaining hierarchical relationships between Islam and other religions.

AbstractKhwājah Qāsim Tushtarī’s recently discovered Recognizing God (Maʿrifat-i Khudāy taʿālā) is one of the only texts known to have survived from the early Alamūt period of Ismaili Muslim history. This article analyses the work in the context of the “new Invitation” (daʿwat-i jadīd) to the Ismaili faith that al-Shahrastānī (d. 548/1153) tells us was inaugurated by the Fāṭimid Imam al-Mustanṣir billāh (d. 487/1094) and championed by Ḥasan-i Ṣabbāḥ (d. 518/1124). The text emphasises that the ultimate purpose of human existence is to know God, and that the path to this knowledge is through the Imam of the Time. The concepts of the ‘true teacher’ (muʿallim-i ṣādiq) and ‘sage’ (ḥakīm) are examined and the literary culture fostered at the Ismaili fortresses, particularly Girdkūh, is explored. Significantly, the article draws attention to the position of Sanāʾī Ghaznawī (d.circa525/1131) in Persian Ismaili literature and to the very early development of pious, devotional and homiletic poetry as well as the “mathnawīmetre” in Ismaili environments, which may have helped set the stage for some of the most significant poetic achievements of mystical Islam: the writings of Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār (d.circa618/1221) and Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (d. 672/1273).

Résumé :
In this article, we focused on the presence of verbs and nouns in Su‘ād al-Ṣabāḥ Fatāfīt Imraʼa (Fragments of a Woman), and on the significance of tense verbs as a section of grammatical structures, which in turn are considered part of the structural methods. Fatāfīt Imraʼa, with most of its poems, is a revolutionary work for its rejection of the humiliating reality, and social postulates that made the man dominant in his relationship with women. Since the revolution is based on changing the existing reality, and change is associated with actions (verbs), rather than nouns that indicate stability and consistency. We found that most of the revolutionary poems have a notably high ratio of verbs to nouns compared to those in which the persona feels emotional, social or patriotic satisfaction. About the significance of tense verbs, we found that the poems in which the past tense predominates depict a steady state that does not change or that it depicts a state that was intended to be attached and entrenched in the minds of the readers to influencing them, while the present tense was in most of the poems that depicted continual states. The style of speech that Al-Sabah followed in many of her poems contributed to the use of imperative verbs, but in a different way. When the persona was optimistic about the change and renewal that the future would bring, to move to a better situation, the presence of imperative verbs increased, and when she did not hope for anything from the future, it was less or completely gone.

Abstract This note offers some lexical data in vernacular/semi-vernacular Arabic collected in three texts written by the following North-African authors : Ibn al-Dabbāġ al-Qayrawānī (dead in 696/1296 or 699/1300), Ibn al-Ṣabbāġ al-Ḥimyarī (dead after 733/1333) and ʿAlī b. Maymūn al-Ġumārī (dead in 917/1511). It is intended to remind the historian and the linguist of the interest there would be in examining the material in dialectal Arabic from Tunisia between the second half of the 7th/13th century and the beginning of the 10th/16th century in order to contribute, among other questions, to the development of a social history of linguistic uses. The lexical material is presented in Arabic script.

Shair, Nabil. « Investigating a Vocal Improvisatory Genre (Mawwāl) in Arab Music : a Case Study of a Mawwāl Performance by Wadī‘ al‐Ṣāfī ». Music Analysis, 29 avril 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/musa.12227.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTAlthough recent decades have witnessed a significant growth and expansion of studies dealing with the performing practice of Arab music improvisation, most such studies are focused on instrumental, not vocal, performing practices. As a result, Arab vocal performing practice, especially that of vocal improvisatory genres, still lacks a comprehensive theoretical approach. In this article I examine the maqām (Arab modal framework) phenomenon by analysing a piece in its pre‐eminent improvisatory genre (mawwāl) composed and performed by an eminent musician: mawwāl ‘Ṭal al‐Ṣabāḥ’ by Wadī‘ al‐Ṣāfī. Most vocal improvisation is presented in Arab music literature without a defined or definite melodic (or rhythmic) structure. I posit that the mawwāl genre has defined and quasi‐defined structures on the macro and micro levels of the piece, since a major part of those structures is manifested as recurring, defined compositional devices and interrelationships throughout the piece within the improvisational frame of the mawwāl genre, a reflection of its structural intricacy. This article thus contributes to the existing literature on classical Arab vocal performance by implementing the theory of natural schemata as an analytical framework along with a structural analysis based on a detailed descriptive transcription of the piece, and thus characterising the largest and smallest strata of musical structures in the mawwāl genre.

Understanding the work of Ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, a Mudéjar of 14th / 15th century, makes it possible to identify the correspondences existing between the different works of riḥla and the specificities of an author of this period. His work is inseparable from his experience and the stories are told through the prism of Arab-Muslim identity. Thus, through the analysis of the author's personal writing, the claim of a cultural and political identity emerges, where the presence of others plays a very important role in the construction of the individual. In this context, a negotiation of identity an is highlighted by the author. This links the joint construction of space and an identity by inserting them in collective memory and with the aim fighting against oversight. Space appears as a perceptible factor from which self-representation is born. It then allows the emergence of an imaginary world that will be the most suitable to modeling the space according to the purpose that Ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ wants to serve. This author therefore provides us with a portrait of Mudéjar societybetween the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century, highlighting the identity issues of the time
