Résumé :
This paper analyzes the effect of financial knowledge and confidence in shaping individual investment choices, sustainable debt behavior, and preferences for socially and environmentally responsible financial companies. Exploiting data from the “Italian Literacy and Financial Competence Survey” (IACOFI) carried out by the Bank of Italy in early 2020, we address potential endogeneity concerns in order to investigate the causal effect of objective financial knowledge on individual financial behaviors. To this aim, we perform endogenous probit regressions, using the respondent’s long-term planning attitude, the use of information and communication technology devices, and the financial knowledge of peers as additional instrumental variables. Our main empirical findings show that objective financial knowledge exerts a positive and significant effect on financial market participation and preferences for ethical financial companies. Moreover, we provide strong empirical evidence about the role of confidence biases on individual financial behaviors. In particular, overconfident individuals display a higher probability of making financial investments, experiencing losses due to investment fraud, and being over-indebted. Conversely, underconfident individuals exhibit suboptimal investment choices, but are less likely to engage in risky financial behaviors.

Résumé :
Background: Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) of the subtalar joint is a serious, disabling, and frequent complication following intra-articular calcaneal fractures (IACFs). Using plain radiographs to assess the subtalar joint for PTOA is imprecise and insensitive, hindering progress toward improving treatment and assessing outcomes. This study explored how low-dose weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT) can be used to provide reliable, quantitative 3D measures of subtalar joint space width (JSW) following IACF and correlated the 3D JSW with clinical outcomes. Methods: After institutional review board approval, 21 patients (15 male; age, 28-70 years) who sustained IACFs and were treated with percutaneous surgical reduction underwent WBCT scans at follow-up visits 2 to 15 years (average, 7.8 years) after surgical treatment. Subtalar joint 3D JSW was computed after a semiautomated protocol was used to segment the talus and calcaneus from the WBCT data. Mean and minimum 3D JSW measurements were calculated and compared with Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) radiographic osteoarthritis grade, RAND-36 Physical (PCS) and Mental (MCS) Component Scores, and visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to detect the strength of association between variables, with significance set at P < .05. Results: Mean 3D JSW values measured from WBCT for patients with IACFs ranged from 0.9 to 2.5 mm (1.7 ± 0.4 mm) over the entire subtalar joint. Intra- and interrater reliabilities for the WBCT-based JSW measurement technique were 0.95 (95% CI, 0.91-0.97) and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.95-0.98), respectively. Mean and minimum 3D JSW values correlated inversely with VAS pain scores and KL grade ( P < .05), particularly in central and posterior subtalar regions. Conclusion: WBCT-based methods were used to quantify the preservation/loss of JSW in patients with IACFs, enabling more accurate, definitive measurement of subtalar PTOA. The results of this study demonstrate that WBCT can be utilized to objectively assess subtalar PTOA and help us to better understand how arthritic changes affect actual patient experience. Level of Evidence: Level III, prognostic comparative study.

Résumé :
Context. The apparent lack of massive O-type stars near the zero-age main sequence, or ZAMS (at ages <2 Myr), is a topic that has been widely discussed in the past 40 yr. Different explanations for the elusive detection of these young massive stars have been proposed from the observational and theoretical side, but no firm conclusions have been reached yet. Aims. We reassess this empirical result here, benefiting from the high-quality spectroscopic observations of (more than 400) Galactic O-type stars gathered by the IACOB and OWN surveys. Methods. We used effective temperatures and surface gravities resulting from a homogeneous semi-automatized IACOB-GBAT/FASTWIND spectroscopic analysis to locate our sample of stars in the Kiel and spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell (sHR) diagrams. We evaluated the completeness of our magnitude-limited sample of stars as well as potential observational biases affecting the compiled sample using information from the Galactic O star catalog. We discuss limitations and possible systematics of our analysis method, and compare our results with other recent studies using smaller samples of Galactic O-type stars. We mainly base our discussion on the distribution of stars in the sHR diagram in order to avoid the use of still uncertain distances to most of the stars in our sample. However, we also performed a more detailed study of the young cluster Trumpler-14 as an illustrative example of how Gaia cluster distances can help to construct the associated classical HR diagram. Results. We find that the apparent lack of massive O-type stars near the ZAMS with initial evolutionary masses in the range between ≈30 and 70 M⊙ still persist even when spectroscopic results from a large non-biased sample of stars are used. We do not find any correlation between the dearth of stars close to the ZAMS and obvious observational biases, limitations of our analysis method, and/or the use of one example spectroscopic HR diagram instead of the classical HR diagram. Finally, by investigating the effect of the efficiency of mass accretion during the formation process of massive stars, we conclude that an adjustment of the mass accretion rate towards lower values than canonically assumed might reconcile the hotter boundary of the empirical distribution of optically detected O-type stars in the spectroscopic HR diagram and the theoretical birthline for stars with masses above ≈30 M⊙. Last, we also discuss how the presence of a small sample of O2-O3.5 stars found much closer to the ZAMS than the main distribution of Galactic O-type star might be explained in the context of this scenario when the effect of nonstandard star evolution (e.g. binary interaction, mergers, and/or homogeneous evolution) is taken into account.

Résumé :
Context. The IACOB and OWN surveys are two ambitious, complementary observational projects which have made available a large multi-epoch spectroscopic database of optical high resolution spectra of Galactic massive O-type stars. Aims. Our aim is to study the full sample of (more than 350) O stars surveyed by the IACOB and OWN projects. As a first step towards this aim, we have performed the quantitative spectroscopic analysis of a subsample of 128 stars included in the modern grid of O-type standards for spectral classification. The sample comprises stars with spectral types in the range O3–O9.7 and covers all luminosity classes. Methods. We used the semi-automatized IACOB-BROAD and IACOB-GBAT/FASTWIND tools to determine the complete set of spectroscopic parameters that can be obtained from the optical spectrum of O-type stars. A quality flag was assigned to the outcome of the IACOB-GBAT/FASTWIND analysis for each star, based on a visual evaluation of how the synthetic spectrum of the best fitting FASTWIND model reproduces the observed spectrum. We also benefitted from the multi-epoch character of the IACOB and OWN surveys to perform a spectroscopic variability study of the complete sample, providing two different flags for each star accounting for spectroscopic binarity as well as variability of the main wind diagnostic lines. Results. We obtain – for the first time in a homogeneous and complete manner – the full set of spectroscopic parameters of the “anchors” of the spectral classification system in the O star domain. We provide a general overview of the stellar and wind parameters of this reference sample, as well as updated recipes for the SpT–Teff and SpT–log g calibrations for Galactic O-type stars. We also propose a distance-independent test for the wind-momentum luminosity relationship. We evaluate the reliability of our semi-automatized analysis strategy using a subsample of ~40 stars extensively studied in the literature, and find a fairly good agreement between our derived effective temperatures and gravities and those obtained by means of more traditional “by-eye” techniques and different stellar atmosphere codes. The overall agreement between the synthetic spectra associated with the IACOB-GBAT/FASTWIND best fitting models and the observed spectra is good for most of the analyzed targets, but 46 stars out of the 128 present a particular behavior of the wind diagnostic lines that cannot be reproduced by our grid of spherically symmetric unclumped models. These are potential targets of interest for more detailed investigations of clumpy winds and/or the existence of additional circumstellar emitting components contaminating the wind diagnostic lines (e.g., disks, magnetospheres). Last, our spectroscopic variability study has led to the detection of clear or likely signatures of spectroscopic binarity in 27% of the stars and small amplitude radial velocity variations in the photospheric lines of another 30%. Additionally, 31% of the investigated stars show variability in the wind diagnostic lines.

Résumé :
Introduction Femoral head collapse (FHC) is a rarely reported complication of hip intra-articular corticosteroid injection (IACSI). Upon observing a high rate of FHC after hip IACSI, we sought to (1) describe how we addressed the problem through a systematic evaluation of clinical data and institutional care practices followed by process improvement efforts; and (2) report our results. Methods Patients receiving hip IACSI during a 27-month period underwent retrospective review to determine the rate of FHC and to identify associated patient factors or practice shortfalls. Findings led to institution-wide interventions: (1) to improve patient/provider awareness of this association; and (2) to develop/implement practice guidelines. Rates of FHC after hip IACSI and practice patterns among providers before and after intervention were compared. Results Initial FHC rate after hip IACSI was 20.4%. Patient-related factors included body mass index (p = 0.025), history of cancer therapy (p = 0.012), Vitamin D level (p = 0.030), and multiple injections (p = 0.004). Volume/dose of injectate and post-injection surveillance methods varied widely. Quality improvement (QI) intervention resulted in fewer treatment referrals (from 851 to 436), fewer repeat injections (mean = 1.61 to 1.37; p = 0.0006), and a 5% lower FHC rate (p = 0.1292). Variation in practice patterns persisted, so a systems-based Clinical Pathway was established. Discussion When a high rate of FHC after hip IACSI was found to be associated with certain patient and practice factors, introduction of education materials and treatment guidelines decreased number of referrals, number of injections per patient, and FHC rate. In the absence of the systems-based Pathway, the type, dose, and volume of injectate and post-procedure follow-up remained variable.

Résumé :
Abstract In his new book, Logical Form, Andrea Iacona distinguishes between two different roles that have been ascribed to the notion of logical form: the logical role and the semantic role. These two roles entail a bifurcation of the notion of logical form. Both notions of logical form, according to Iacona, are descriptive, having to do with different features of natural language sentences. I agree that the notion of logical form bifurcates, but not that the logical role is merely descriptive. In this paper, I focus on formalization, a process by which logical form, on its logical role, is attributed to natural language sentences. According to some, formalization is a form of explication, and it involves normative, pragmatic, as well as creative aspects. I present a view by which formalization involves explicit commitments on behalf of a reasoner or an interpreter, which serve the normative grounds for the evaluation of a given text. In previous work, I proposed the framework of semantic constraints for the explication of logical consequence. Here, I extend the framework to include formalization constraints. The various constraints then serve the role of commitments. I discuss specific issues raised by Iacona concerning univocality, co-reference and equivocation, and I show how our views on these matters diverge as a result of our different starting assumptions.

After listening to reports from two observers sent to Vietnam, Kennedy responded with a question. ‘Did you two both go to the same country?’ The reader may ask the same of the two editions to be reviewed here. Each consists of two volumes, all of the same trim size and thickness; but one set is red, the other blue, and the differences go on from there. It is necessary to reassure the reader that both concern the same four documents said to contain ‘Aquitanian polyphony’, and in addition one document known as the ‘Codex Calixtinus’ – more precisely the Liber Sancti Iacobi (of Compostela). The contents include a determinate number of musical compositions, in an indeterminate number of variant versions, all dated to the twelfth century, in France.

Résumé :
The paper presents some interesting aspects related to the biography and works of Romanian mathematician Caius Iacob (1912–1992). He was famous for his works in the fields of mathematical analysis, fluid mechanics, classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory. At the age of 19, he graduated from the Mathematics Faculty in Bucharest, and then he went to Paris to continue his studies at the Faculty of Sciences, where he worked on a PhD thesis under the advice of famous French mathematician Henri Villat. On 24 June 1935, Caius Iacob successfully presented to the Sorbonne committee his PhD thesis about “Determination of conjugated harmonic functions with some limit conditions, and their applications in hydrodynamics”. Returning to Romania, Caius Iacob had a long and successful career teaching mathematics and mechanics at the universities of Timişoara, Cluj and Bucharest. His most important work is considered the “Mathematical introduction to the mechanics of fluids”. This book, providing original ways to work with classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory, was published in Romanian in 1952 and in French in 1959. In 1955, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy, becoming a titular Member in 1963. He was also President of the Mathematics Section of the Romanian Academy from 1980 until the end of his life, in 1992. In 1991, he initiated the foundation of the “Romanian Academy Institute of Applied Mathematics”. In 2001 the institute merged with the “Centre for Mathematical Statistics”, which had been created in 1964 by mathematician Gheorghe Mihoc, thus creating the “Gheorghe Mihoc – Caius Iacob Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics” of the Romanian Academy.

To approach the iconography of the miracles of Saint James involves turning to textual sources, to observe the interaction between image and text. In the 12th century, the Liber Sancti Iacobi compiles, in Book II, the miracles performed by the Apostle on the roads to Santiago and in the saint’s own church in Compostela. The geography where the miracles take place is varied, and the protagonists belong to different social classes, although the privileged are the most important. This miraculous compendium was copied and inserted in various codices that have been studied from philological and cultural analyses. With regard to the History of Art, we propose to approach some of these miracles based on the images and the devotion to which they have been the object: which are the most represented, what aspects stand out and what are their main meanings according to their supports.

Résumé :
The passion of the apostle James the Greater is one of the main cycles of his hagiography. It is worth recalling the various medieval texts and traditions that recreated the narrative, although the Passio Iacobi and later the Legenda Aurea should be singled out as the most important sources for the iconographic elaborations. There is also room for the miracle exercised from the thaumaturgic condition granted to James by Christ: the healing of a paralysed man is the decisive motif for the conversion of the scribe Josiah. However, the iconographic representation of this event was not very abundant in the Romanesque and Gothic centuries, as opposed to the baptism of Josiah and, above all, his beheading together with the apostle himself. Apart from possible theological considerations, the lesser fortune of this figurative register must also have been influenced by the synthetic nature of the iconographic cycles themselves, therefore its evocation was necessarily implicit in the inclusion of the conversion-baptism of Josiah

Résumé :
Abstract In a recent book, Logical Form: between Logic and Natural Language, Andrea Iacona argues that semantic form and logical form are distinct. The semantic form of a sentence is something that (together with the meanings of its parts) determines what it means; the logical from of a sentence is something that (all by itself) determines whether it is a logical truth. Semantic form does not depend on context but logical form does: for example, whether ‘This is this’ is a logical truth depends on whether the two occurrences of ‘this’ are used to demonstrate the same individual. I respond by claiming that logical form is indifferent to reference and is sensitive only to obligatory co-reference. When the speaker intends both occurrences of ‘this’ to be interpreted the same way the logical from of ‘This is this’ is a=a, while in a context where the speaker has no such intention it is a=b. This proposal allows a much more conservative revision of the traditional picture than the one suggested by Iacona. Instead of identifying the logical form of a natural language sentence by seeking a formalization in an artificial language, we obtain it through abstraction from its syntactic analysis: replacing the non-logical expressions by schematic letters, making sure that we use identical ones if and only if the speaker intended co-reference.

Résumé :
More than 10 years ago, Orlikowski and Iacono (2001) examined the conceptualization of Information Technology (IT) in Information Systems Research (ISR) articles published in the 1990s. Their main conclusion was that the majority of these articles did not properly conceptualize the IT artifact. They recommended that IS researchers start to theorize about the IT artifact and employ rich conceptualizations of IT. The Orlikowski and Iacono paper provides a strong anchor point from which to analyze the evolution of the IS discipline. In order to obtain an up-to-date image of contemporary IS research, and to assess how the IS field has evolved since the 1990s, we carried out a similar analysis on a more recent and broader set of articles, that is, the full set (N = 644) of papers published between 2006 and 2009 by six top North American (ISR, MISQ, JAIS) and European (JIT, ISJ, EJIS) journals. The statistics in our results reveal no drastic advance in terms of deeper engagement with the IT artifact; more than 39% of the articles in our set are virtually mute about the artifact, and less than 16% employ an ensemble view of IT. Moreover, we note differences among the North American and European journals. Implications of the findings for two perspectives central to the IS research legitimacy debate are discussed.

Résumé :
Objective Bilateral frozen shoulder (FS) is often treated with intra-articular corticosteroid injection (IACI). No studies have been performed to establish whether IACI must be administered in both shoulders or in only one shoulder to improve function. This study was therefore performed to determine whether unilateral IACI improves shoulder pain and passive range of motion (pROM) in bilateral FS. Methods The medical records of 165 patients with bilateral primary FS who underwent ultrasonography-guided IACI (2 mL of 10-mg/mL triamcinolone acetonide mixed with 5 mL of 1% lidocaine) in one shoulder were retrospectively reviewed. The outcome measures, namely the numeric rating scale (NRS) scores and pROM values (abduction, external rotation, flexion, hyperextension, and internal rotation), were evaluated pre- and post-injection. Results The patients’ mean age was 54.0 ± 8.0 years. The mean symptom duration was 6.5 ± 2.8 months. The mean follow-up period after injection was 6.7 ± 0.8 weeks. The NRS scores and pROM values significantly improved in both the injected and non-injected shoulders. Conclusions This study showed that unilateral IACI in patients with bilateral FS improves the clinical outcome of the non-injected shoulder. We suggest that physicians observe the non-injected shoulder after unilateral injection rather than performing bilateral injections.

Résumé :
PurposeAs a kind of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, pipe routing design (PRD) is applied widely in modern industries. In the offshore oil and gas industry, a semi-submersible production platform is an important equipment for oil exploitation and production. PRD is one of the most key parts of the design of semi-submersible platform. This study aims to present an improved ant colony algorithm (IACO) to address PRD for the oil and gas treatment system when designing a semi-submersible production platform.Design/methodology/approachFirst, to simplify PRD problem, a novel mathematical model is built according to real constraints and rules. Then, IACO, which combines modified heuristic function, mutation mechanism and dynamical parameter mechanism, is introduced.FindingsBased on a set of specific instances, experiments are carried out, and the experimental results show that the performance of IACO is better than that of two variants of ACO, especially in terms of the convergence speed and swarm diversity. Finally, IACO is used to solve PRD for the oil and gas treatment system of semi-submersible production platform. The simulation results, which include nine pipe paths, demonstrate the practicality and high-efficiency of IACO.Originality/valueThe main contribution of this study is the development of method for solving PRD of a semi-submersible production platform based on the novel mathematical model and the proposed IACO.
