Résumé :
Fu Sheng Liu Ji is not only an autobiographical prose written by Shen Fu in the Qing Dynasty, but also a love letter to his wife. So far, there have been four English versions of it, translated by Lin Yutang, Shirley M. Black, Leonard Pratt & Chiang Su-hui, and Graham Sanders respectively. Among them, Lin Yutang’s version has been widely studied, and Shirley M. Black’s version is different from the source text in terms of content and layout. Therefore, this research takes the co-translation version of Leonard Pratt & Chiang Su-hui and Graham Sanders’ version as the research object, builds a corpus, and adopts both qualitative and quantitative methods to make a comparison of the translator’s style between the two English versions from different perspectives—vocabulary, sentence, and discourse, analyzing the type/token ratio, lexical density, average word length, number of sentences, average sentence length and readability of the two versions. It is found that the type/token ratio, lexical density, average word length and average sentence length of Pratt & Chiang Su-hui’s version are lower than that of Sanders’ version, and Pratt & Chiang Su-hui’s version is easier to read than Sanders’ version.

Résumé :
Objectives. Hua-Zheng-Hui-Sheng-Dan (HZHSD) was used as an experimental model to explore research methods of large formulae in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) using current molecular biology approaches.Materials and Methods. The trypan blue exclusion assay was used to determine cell viability and cell numbers. Flow cytometry was used to assess cell cycle distribution and apoptosis. The concentration of cyclin D1 was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The median effect principle was used in drug combination studies. An orthogonal experimental design was used to estimate the effects of each herb at different concentrations. The HeLa xenograft mouse model was used to compare the antitumor activity of drugs in vivo.Results. Among the 35 herbs that comprise HZHSD, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (RRP),Caesalpinia sappan(CS),Evodia rutaecarpa(ER), Folium Artemisiae Argyi (FAA),Leonurus japonicusHoutt (LJH), Tumeric (Tu), Radix Paeoniae Alba (RPA), and Trogopterus Dung (TD) effectively inhibited the proliferation of HeLa and SKOV3 cells. Only RRR had an effect on HeLa and SKOV3 cell viability. According to the median effect principle,Angelica sinensis(Oliv.) (AS),Tabanus(Ta), and Pollen Typhae (PT), which were proven to have a significant synergistic inhibitory effect on the proliferation of HeLa cells, were added to the original eight positive herbs. The combination of RPA and AS had a synergistic effect on inducing cell cycle S phase arrest and decreasing intracellular cyclin D1 in HeLa cells. By orthogonal experimental design, LJH and Tu were considered unnecessary herbs. The small formula (SHZHSD) consisted of RPA, AS, RRR, Ta., TD, PT, ER, CS, and FAA and was able to inhibit cell proliferation and induce cell apoptosis. The antitumor effects of HZHSD and SHZHSD were also compared in vivo.Conclusions. Through molecular biology approaches both in vitro and in vivo, research into single drugs, and analysis using the median effect principle and orthogonal experimental design, the small formula (SHZHSD) was determined from the original formula (HZHSD). SHZHSD exhibited superior antitumor activity compared with the original formula both in vitro and in vivo.

Résumé :
When Anglican missionaries helped to constitute the Chinese Anglican Church (Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui) in 1912, they had a particular expectation of how the church would one day become self-supporting, self-governing and self-propagating. The first constitution crafted by missionary bishops presupposed an infant church that would require the step-by-step guidance of its parent association. However, the intended trajectory was superseded by the zeal of Chinese Christians and drastic changes in the national government of China. The constitutional basis of the Chinese Anglican Church had to be restructured fundamentally again and again due to political upheaval in republican China, the Japanese occupation and the Communist revolution. This article explores the difficulties of crafting and implementing church constitutions in China in the first half of the turbulent twentieth century. Focusing on the South China diocese, wider questions are posed about the formation of canon law in an age of extremes.

Résumé :
The composition and diversity of the rhizosphere microbial community maintain the stability of the root microclimate, and several studies have focused on this aspect of rhizosphere microorganisms. However, how these communities vary with cultivars of a species is not completely understood. Paeonia lactiflora—a perennial herb species of the family Paeoniaceae—includes a wide variety of cultivars, with rich rhizosphere microbial resources. Hence, we studied the differences in rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with eight P. lactiflora cultivars. We noted that Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes and Chloroflexi were the dominant phyla associated with the cultivars. The composition of rhizosphere bacterial community of different cultivars was highly similar at taxonomic levels, but there were slightly differences in the relative abundance. LEfSe analysis showed that the cultivars “Sheng Tao Hua” and “Zi Lou Xian Jin” exhibited the most biomarkers. Differential ASV analysis revealed the maximum difference in ASV abundance between “Lian Tai” and “Zi Hong Zheng Hui”, as well as between “Sheng Tao Hua” and “Tao Hua Fei Xue”, and the maximum similarity between “Duo Ye Zi” and “Xue Feng”. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that rhizosphere bacteria in most cultivars maintain homeostasis by cooperation, wherein Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria played a vital role. In addition, microbial resources related to cultivars like bioremediation, organic degradation and resistance to diseases are found. This study revealed the structures of the rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with different cultivars of P. lactiflora and explored their stress resistance potential, which can be used to guide future agricultural practices.

Résumé :
This thesis is aimed at analyzing dyslexic students’ features of written texts in Hong Kong using systemic functional linguistics. Text analytic method was adopted in comparing the texts written by dyslexic students with those written by normal students based on the systems of transitivity, theme, mood and modality. The study has further developed the concept of word density within the framework of systemic functional linguistics, putting forward the proposition of using “functional word density”, i.e. transitivity density, theme density and mood density, to analyze the language features of students with dyslexia, in the hope of shedding some light on teaching writing skills to these students. Research findings indicate that dyslexic students generally display strong capabilities in presenting specific concepts while their emotional concepts, however, are relatively weak. These students’ density of lexicon regarding material, behavioral and existential processes is higher than that of normal students but their word density of psychological and relationship processes is comparatively lower. When writing descriptive essays, narrative essays and argumentative essays, dyslexic students’ lexical density of psychological process indicates less variation than normal students. This shows that students with dyslexia are generally less flexible in expressing emotions and always fail to adapt to different genres by adjusting remarkably their use of psychological words. As a matter of fact, dyslexic students tend to be insufficient in expressing emotions. When it comes to essay writing, this “low-level of emotionality” reduces their lexical density of psychological words which will in turn undermines students’ performance in descriptive essays. Nevertheless, when doing narrative or commentary writing, these students’ proven word density is somewhat higher than that of normal students. The findings may pave the way for further research on alternative approaches in teaching writing skills to the students. It is also noteworthy that dyslexic students display similar tendency to normal students in terms of theme, mood and modality density. However, these students are good at using conjunctions while weak in connectives and modal adjunct. From the perspective of education, remedial and alternative approaches may be considered for the sake of dyslexic students. It is proposed that these students, in order to compensate for their lack of emotional lexicon, may express feelings by narrating daily occurrences and teachers may support by providing them with lexicon of relevant genres to strengthen their data bank on emotional lexicon.

Résumé :
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

Résumé :
This chapter explores the contribution of Anglican women, Chinese and British, in the promotion of welfare for women and children in Hong Kong from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The narrative covers four areas of progress in chronological order, which include: Elevating Social Status through Education, Advocating Women’s Rights through Social Movements, the establishment of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Women’s League, and women leaders in social services. It presents an account of change and continuity in the development of women’s work for women: from British women’s work of charity and evangelism to Chinese women’s assumption of leadership roles; from protection of girls and women in the nineteenth century, to pioneering nursery and child care in postwar rehabilitation, and providing holistic care to the elderly and marginalised in twenty-first century.

Kuo Siu-may (1916–1995) is best known as the wife of Bishop K. H. Ting (1915–2012). In previous studies she has generally been cast in the shadow of her husband. Kuo Siu-may was educated in Anglican schools and her life and work may be seen as part of the development of the Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui (CHSKH) and of Chinese history as a whole. She also transcended this framework and developed her own role in society. This chapter considers Kuo Siu-may as an independent individual in her own right and interpret her role as an Anglican woman intellectual in pre- and post-liberation China from different perspectives. This chapter offers a different perspective on the role of Anglican women beyond the confines of the Church and opens up a new area of scholarly research.
