Texte intégralThe extension of the injunction to become self-entrepreneurs promoted by neoliberal ideology since the 1980s, calls for a sociological approach to entrepreneurship. Far from being limited to instrumental rationality, as some economic literature would have us believe, the act of entrepreneurship appears irreducible to a single logic of action, and requires a combinatorial approach to shed light on it. We can see that setting up a business refers to a plurality of registers, the main ones being access to social status (integration logic), maximizing resources (strategic logic) and realize oneself as a subject (subjective logic). However, only the last register of an entrepreneurial ethic guided by a common desire to "control their destiny", that links all the motives for their involvement
Pope, Nathan. « Hmong Parent Choice in Hmong Language Programs in Central Valley California ». Thesis, Mills College, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10788699.
Texte intégralThis research explores Hmong parents’ choices and experiences in choosing district provided educational programs that provide instruction in Hmong language for their children. The study involved interviews with district employees who have created, implemented and/or teach in district provided Hmong language programs. These interviews were followed by focus group interviews with Hmong parents about the choices and experiences of district provided Hmong language programs. Findings were that administrators were deeply committed to providing Hmong language programs to serve students identity and to provide an additive model of bilingualism that promotes the students English language learning as well as mother tongue learning; Hmong parents are very worried about potential language loss of their children’s Hmong language and they are actively looking for more Hmong language opportunities for their children; parents are very happy with Hmong language programs provided by district and want to see those programs expanded.

Texte intégralThe Hmong language has originated in South-East Asia. When communists took power in Laos in 1975, several thousands of its speakers were spread all over the globe. This diaspora led to new situations of languages, Hmong being in contact with western languages such as French and English. One could wonder about the evolution of the Hmong lexis since then in the four countries where the ethnic group mainly migrated, that is to say France, the United States, French Guyana, and Australia. This sociolinguistic study aims at comparing the degree of influence of French and English upon the Hmong language through the analysis of loanwords used by some Hmong speakers in spontaneous speech. Four different analyses were established according to phonetics, grammar, set of themes, and lexis. The results, coupled with the statistics made, show that for different reasons and according to the places studied, neither French nor English have had a significant influence on the Hmong language throughout the past thirty years. One can see here the sociolinguistic dimension of this study

Texte intégralThis is a comparative study of the hmong-mien (miao-yao) languages, spoken in south china as well as in the north of vietnam, of laos, of thailand and of myanma. After a presentation of the work already achieved in the field of diachroni linguistics on hmong-mien languages and a discussion of the importance of such work with regard to our knowledge of the ethnohistory of the speakers of humong-mien languages (chap. I,pp. 16-62), we describe the initials, the rimes, the tonal system and if possible, the tonal sandhi of fourty languages (chap. Ii,pp. 62-232). Our analysis shows that there are languages with nearly one hundred distinctive initials, others with more than one hundred rimes, and still others with than ten phonological tones (glottalisation and phonation types are distinctive in most of the languages). The bewilderi diversity of the phonological systems found within the same family, and even within one branch (hmong or mjen) of the family, which is of interest in the perspective of a general theory of linguistic change. The tones of each language are by the etymological numeration (tonal categories 1 to 8). The introduction of the diachronical perspective in our descriptions, permits to reveal some pecularities of the hmong-mien languages (links between tones and phonation types, links between tones and wowels, links between tones and initials). The descriptive chapter is is followed by a comparati analysis of the common vocabulary of hmong and mien languages (chap. Iii,pp. 234-299). We present tables of initialrime - and tone-correspondences in the fourty languages described previously, on the basis of two hundred etymological schedules. The correspondence tables show clearly the problems still existing in the internal classification of the hmon mjen family and reveal the interest of the pu-nu languages, on which only few descriptive material is available up to no
