The Nôm Preservation Foundation recently made the libraries of two Buddhist temples near Hà Nội available in digitized form. The resulting composite temple collection allows us to pose questions about the history of the book in Vietnam. The history of the book in Vietnam must be understood from an interregional perspective. The availability of relatively inexpensive Chinese books influenced what was worthwhile to print locally. At the same time, even books with the same title are remarkably diverse in terms of content, medium, and annotation. A close look at individual books can show us what and how people read.

Résumé :
The paper explores the actual features of the historical and literary context of book culture in Finland in Russian. On the example of the publishing house "Biblion" (1919-1921) the information is provided that contributes to the study of the publishing activities of foreign organizations, subjects of Sweden and Finland, contributing to the appearance of books of fiction by many Russian authors, the most famous of which during this period were Leonid Andreev and Alexander Kuprin. For a more complete presentation of the issue of the development of Russian book publishing between 1919 and 1921, it is necessary to know not only about trends on a national scale, to see the features of the development of book publishing in the regions, but also to take into account the specifics of the work of publishing houses and publishing activities of Russian abroad. The relevance of the issue is confirmed by the lack of domestic studies on the topic of publishing Russian literature abroad. The results of the work can be used in teaching courses on literature and culture of the Russian abroad countries, the history of Russian literature of the 1/3 of the XX century, studies of regional literature, with the refinement and addition of biobibliographies, bibliographies, catalogs, encyclopedias, other publications of Russian literature abroad.

Hagen, Anne Marie. « Thomas Nelson & ; Sons and children's book publishing, 1850-1918 ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17278.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the publisher Thomas Nelson’s contribution to the juvenile publishing field in Britain in the period between 1850-1918, and studies Nelson’s development into a specialised publisher of books for children in the same period. The thesis examines the ways in which the children’s book and the juvenile publishing field developed through negotiating the demands of religious and secular education, arguing that it was through the children’s list that Nelson transitioned into a modern educational publisher. The thesis challenges assumptions that the history of children’s books is one from reading for instruction to reading solely for pleasure, thus also expanding our understanding of the types of books which were published in the “Golden Age” of children’s books. Finally, in uncovering the influence of the Nelson firm, the thesis reassesses the role of Scottish companies in British juvenile publishing. The research builds on three types of data: first and foremost information comes from the “Papers of Thomas Nelson & Sons”, a collection of the firm’s business and editorial papers. To allow comparisons with the larger publishing field and with specific publishers, data were also gathered from contemporary trade, professional, government and literary publications. Finally, the material form of selected Nelson children’s books is analysed. In chapter one, the impact that Nelson’s origin as a publisher with evangelical sympathies had on text selection and editorial methods is analysed. The reasons for the adventure tale’s dominant position on the Nelson list is the focus of chapter two, which analyses the editorial treatment of this genre and the diverse opportunities this genre afforded Nelson. Chapter three analyses the development of Nelson series, particularly the implications such diversification schemes had for the demarcations between juvenile and popular fiction. Chapter four examines the educational gift book and its relationship with Nelson’s schoolbooks, and the ways in which the conservatism and innovation of the early twentieth-century print market affected the composition of the children’s book list. The thesis concludes with a comparison of Nelson books from either end of the period studied, and uses the 1921 Newbolt Report on “The Teaching of English” to reflect on Nelson’s position in the publishing field.

Résumé :
This is a study of the Parisian Latin book industry in the first four decades of the sixteenth century. It challenges the assumption that the Reformation brought about a profound change in the European print world. Luther's engagement with a mass audience is believed to have led to an increase in the number of vernacular publications produced by printers throughout Europe. This was not the case in Paris. Parisian booksellers traded on their established expertise with certain genres, such as theological texts, educational books, and works by classical authors, to maximise their readership both in Paris and farther afield. Working in close proximity inspired the Parisian bookmen to unity and collaboration rather than enmity and direct competition. When printers, booksellers and publishers collaborated they were able to undertake bigger and riskier projects. Such projects might have involved testing new markets or technologies (such as Greek or music printing), or simply producing a book which required a high capital investment. The familial unity extended to the widows of printers, some of whom were able to capitalise on this and build substantial businesses of their own. This high level of collaboration and the continued focus on the established Latin market give the Parisian book world its very specific character. It also helped Paris build an international reputation for high-quality books.

Résumé :
This thesis is an investigation of literary institutions and print culture in France during the two decades following the Second World War. It demonstrates how the changing metropolitan literary marketplace, driven by new methods of book production and bookselling; the rise of internationalism and tiers-mondisme; and a nascent notion of francophonie, accommodated writing of and on sub-Saharan Africa. The first half of the thesis focuses on three institutions of particular significance: the publishing houses of Le Seuil and Présence Africaine, and the Association nationale des écrivains de la mer et de l’outre-mer, known for the literary prizes it administered. Diverse strategies for evaluating representations of sub-Saharan Africa are explored through new research in the archives of these institutions. The tensions between specialist and more commercially orientated publishing, between anti-colonial and exotic representations of sub-Saharan Africa do not map cleanly onto separate institutional contexts in this period. These tensions are underpinned by shared political and aesthetic debates, technological resources, and social contexts. The second half of the thesis analyses in greater detail the publishing process of selection, production and distribution in seven individual case-studies of novels by Christine Garnier, Abdoulaye Sadji, Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Malick Fall, Amos Tutuola, Chinua Achebe and Peter Abrahams. Aspects considered include: readers’ reports and editorial revision; the use of pseudonyms; the development of named collections; the role of literary translators. My methodological approach works with, and at times against, a Bourdieusian framework, to describe the literary field in this period. More specifically, Pascale Casanova’s depiction of Paris as capital of the “World Republic of Letters” is tested and nuanced through the historical focus on the period 1945 – 67. Rather than a passive annexation to the colonial centre, African literary production is shown to be intrinsic to and constitutive of the restless political and aesthetic landscape of post-war reconstruction and decolonisation in the French-speaking world.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the Turkish book publishing industry within the framework of historical development of book publishing since Ottoman practice onwards and current structure of the Turkish book market. The aim of the thesis is to understand recent trends, developments, and problems in the Turkish book market, within its specific historical conditions and in a comparative method to the current structure of book publishing industry in developed countries where book publishing is a global business and highly integrated to other sectors of cultural commodity production. The hypothesis is that although there have been profound changes in the Turkish book publishing sector on the way towards industrialization during recent decade, especially after 2000s
book publishing in Turkey remained an "
infant industry"
and Turkish book publishing market is still unsaturated as a result of serious problems continuing in different cycles of circulating capital in the Turkish book market and in preconditions of profit-maximization and capital accumulation processes
impediments on the creation of a large mass of readers and new genres
lack of an industrial organization of book production and business, and belated developments in regulative-legal framework in copyright regime.

McDougall, Julie. « Publishing history and development of school atlases and British geography, c.1870-c.1930 ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6691.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
My concern in this thesis is with the production of British school atlases between 1870 and 1930. I interpret this particular genre of map and book through the rich resource of the Bartholomew Archive, which holds the business and personal records of the Edinburgh mapmaking firm John Bartholomew & Son. School atlases were instrumental in the dissemination of geographical knowledge at a time when geographers were moulding their subject’s place in the universities and schools in Britain and in parts of the Empire beyond. This thesis builds on concepts in the history of the book, the history of the map and archive history in order to gain knowledge about the people and processes through which this particular type of mapbook was produced, moved and used, and to understand how it was bound up in the development of a discipline. In chapter 1, I outline the main themes of the thesis. The theoretical and methodological ideas underlying it are reviewed in detail in chapter 2. Chapter 3 illuminates the themes threading through the following empirical chapters, providing insight into school atlas production through a consideration of Bartholomew’s production ledgers and what these reveal about the nature of geographical publishing. Interactions between individual atlas producers form the focus of chapter 4, particularly negotiations between publishers, mapmakers, geographers and other professionals over the meaning of ‘author’. In chapter 5, I go on to address atlas production in relation to the pedagogy of regional geography used in schools and, particularly, its impact on school atlases for pupils in ‘local’ settings across the UK. This leads in chapter 6 to an interpretation of how this localising of school atlases was adapted to readers’ locations throughout the British Empire. Questions about readers’ role in the shaping of textual meaning are considered further in chapter 7, which draws on specific instances of producer-reader-atlas interactions to support the argument that reading and reviewing were processes conducted not only, as I show, by readers on the published text but, as I also indicate, they were practices performed by both producers and readers during atlas production. My findings in this thesis shed light on the publishing history of British school atlases, hitherto largely unexamined by historians of the map and historians of geography, and they contribute to our understanding of the production, movement and use of geographical knowledge in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Prior, Amy Dawn. « British mapping of Africa : publishing histories of imperial cartography, c.1880-c.1915 ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6689.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis investigates how the mapping of Africa by British institutions between c.1880 and c.1915 was more complex and variable than is traditionally recognised. The study takes three ‘cuts’ into this topic, presented as journal papers, which examine: the Bartholomew map-publishing firm, the cartographic coverage of the Second Boer War, and the maps associated with Sir Harry H. Johnston. Each case-study focuses on what was produced – both quantitative output and the content of representations – and why. Informed by theories from the history of cartography, book history and the history of science, particular attention is paid to the concerns and processes embodied in the maps and map-making that are irreducible to simply ‘imperial’ discourse; these variously include editorial processes and questions of authorship, concerns for credibility and intended audiences, and the circulation and ‘life-cycles’ of maps. These findings are also explored in relation to the institutional geography of cartography in Britain: the studies illustrate the institutional contingency of such factors and how this gave rise to highly variable representations of Africa. These three empirical papers represent the first sustained studies of each of the topics. By connecting their findings, the thesis also offers broader reconceptualisations of the British mapping of Africa between c.1880 and c.1915: with respect to cartographic representations, maps as objects, and the institutions producing them. Maps did not simply reflect ‘imperial’ discourse; they were highly variable manifestations of multifaceted and institutionally contingent factors and were mobile and mutable objects that were re-used and re-produced in different ways across different settings. Mapmaking institutions were discrete but interconnected sites that not only produced different representations, but played different roles in the mapping of Africa. By illuminating the institutional provenance, ‘life-cycles’ and content of the maps studied, this thesis extends current knowledge of British mapping of Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and raises questions for further research incorporating its lessons, sources and theories.

Santos, Cátia Susana Amaral dos. « Book cover trends in American young adult literature ». Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/12888.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Mestrado em Estudos Editoriais
Although teenagers are taught to never judge a book by its cover, studies have shown that many teens do in fact make their reading decisions based on a book’s cover art (Jones, 2007; Yampbell, 2009). In this context, I considered it important to conduct a visual analysis of young adult book covers to determine trends in terms of imagery, colours and typography. To do so, I analyzed a selection of 50 books drawn from the list put out in 2014 by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) naming the Best Fiction for Young Adults, and I reached some interesting conclusions. In terms of imagery, the human body is the most predominant motif, in particular the fragmented body with the focus on the upper part of body, such as the face and the eyes. Including body pictures in a book cover is an effective marketing strategy since teenagers tend to create a personal relationship with protagonists. However, this practice can also objectify the human body and strengthen the idea that it can be manipulated (as it is, both by the designer and the reader). In terms of colours, it was hard to establish a trend since colour seems to be used at random in the book covers analyzed. However, it was possible to determine that black is by far the most used colour. Black can make a cover appear sleek and sophisticated and also makes the book appealing to both male and female readers because black is liked by both sexes. Lastly, in terms of typography, I determined that sans serif typefaces are the most used. Although decorative typefaces are the ones generally used in book covers, the cleanness, simplicity and apparent neutrality of a sans serif type proves to be the best choice for these covers as it creates a balance with the emotionalizing nature of its images and colours.

John, Philip Owen. « Publishing in Paris, 1570-1590 : a bibliometric analysis ». Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1971.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis is an examination of the printing industry in Paris between 1570 and 1590. These years represent a relatively under-researched period in the history of Parisian print. This period is of importance because of an event in 1572 – the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, and an event in 1588 – the Day of the Barricades and the subsequent exit from Paris of Henry III. This thesis concerns itself with the two years prior to 1572 and two years after 1588 in order to provide context, but the two supporting frames of this investigation are those important events. This thesis attempts to assess what effect those events had upon the printing industry in the foremost print centre of both France and Western Europe. With the religious situation in Paris quietened was there any concrete change in the 1570s and 1580s regarding the types of books printed in Paris? Was there any attempt to exploit this religious stability by pursuing the ‘retreating’ Protestant confession, or did the majority of printers turn away from confessional arguments and polemical literature? What were the markets for Paris books: were they predominantly local or international? The method by which these questions have been addressed is with a bibliometric analysis of the output of the Paris print shops. This statistical approach allows one to address the entire corpus of a city’s output and allows both broad surveys of the data in terms of categorisation of print, but also narrower studies of individual printers and their output. As such this approach allows the printing industry of Paris to be surveyed and analysed in a way that would otherwise be impossible. This statistical approach also allows the books to be seen as an economic item of industrial production instead of purely a culture item of artistic creation. This approach enhances rather than reduces the significance of a book’s cultural importance as it allows the researcher to fully appreciate the achievement and investment of both finance and time that was necessary for the completion of a well printed book.

Résumé :
Should the book and the journal article remain the primary forms of scholarly production in the digital age? That is a question asked by publishing scholar Kathleen Fitzpatrick. She proposes a role for “inbetween” work. Indeed, there is a history of “grey literature” in many fields and of the short book. And academic publishers are experimenting with the form. In this context, an explanation of the rationale for and origins of the Charleston Briefings illustrates the possibilities for experimenting with inbetween publishing featuring subjects of interest to librarians and professionals in allied fields. There follows an account of the genesis, planning, and composition of a forthcoming Briefing on the scholarly workflow. While the length of the Briefings may appear to be its defining element, how it manages its scholarly and educational tasks is the key to meeting its goals and the needs of readers. In this case “inbetweenness” can be an advantage for representing the subject’s timeliness and utility while managing the rapidly growing literature on its different dimensions, including what the digital evolution of the scholarly workflow means for library services.

Résumé :
When Michael Hart initiated his ambitious Gutenberg project of computer re-writing essential literature books, in 1971, sure it was very difficult to imagine our today dependency of digital devices and social media. To type on the those time typewriter devices the basic scholarly novels it was a difficult option for a 24 years man, proven a visionary thinking to the people future access. It was ten years before the lunching the IBM PC's, and Internet Protocols, in a time of the firsts text editors... Twenty years before the first World Wide Web real demo ... But Michael Hart succeeded to build a community of volunteers, delivering free the project results, digital books (through floppies, diskettes, tapes, and later on CD-ROM, or DVDs. Gutenberg project arrived as a model for many libraries to save their depots and manuscripts. Networking and Internet services (email and FTP) already gave new solutions for distribution and visibility of Gutenberg project, for access to digital books. For scientists it was another need, the better access to the scientific publications, an easier way to publish their results. Consequently, quite in the same time when CERN accepted to finance the Tim Berners Lee proposal, the firsts signs of a movement for open access publications are registered. As a nice example, PACS Review (Public Access Computer Science Review), at the Houston University, prepared and announced in 1989, with its first 3 numbers in 1990. A journal delivered as ASCII file, by email, later through a Gopher server, and finally-from 1995 on-line, through the Houston University Web server (HTML, or ASCII format). PACS Review publication stops in 2000. Since 1995 a really peer revue, quality, open journal was launched by Cristian Calude, Herman Maurer, Arto Salomaa at Graz University, called JUCS - ,,Journal of Universal Computer Science". A journal with very regular publication till now. There are, of course, a lot of other interesting examples of electronic (digital) open access journals, in different fields. A new step in this evolution was done through the development of the open source tools for the management of such digital journals into the Web server infrastructure. It was done by the initiative and efforts of John Willinsky, through his PKP - Public Knowledge Project - a multi-university initiative developing free open source software and conducting research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. PKP was founded in 1998 at the Education Faculty of UBC, with the aim to improve the research quality. Another important steps necessary to count of are the 2002 Budapest Open Access Initiative, and the MIT university decision to publish their course materials, generating the corresponding consortium. As an answer to Budapest Open Access Initiative, it is the developing of an on-line catalog of Open Access Journals - DOAJ (build and maintained by Lars Bjornshauge from 2003 until 2013 at the Lund University, recently moved at Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association - OASPA. Into this catalog there are included now about 10.000 Open Access Journals. Of course that in such a paper it isn't possible to escape the competition, more a less a battle between Online Open-Access journals and traditional ones. As well to discus the issue of fake publishers or publishers not living up to reasonable standards both in terms of content and of business behavior. Does all this Open Access movement change a bit the perspectives concerning the transformation of the teachers role in the "Web 2.0 Era" ?

Résumé :
In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

Résumé :
The article desribes the main features of the publishing activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv from the end of the 1990s and in the first two decades of the 21st century. The aim of the author was to show this activity with the help of stages of formation of the Publishing Centre at the University. For this purpose, he used historical method, the methods of analysis, synthesis, content analysis etc. One of the important landmarks of the end of the 20th century in the publishing activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv which has its traditions in the past was the foundation of the mentioned Publishing Centre on the basis of Editing and Publishing Department, Machine Offset and Polygraphic Laboratories. This process was favoured by the administration of the University which supported the transfer of printing base to another building of the University. Professionals with respective qualification level and experience in the sphere of publishing and printing were gathered there. Another stage of the development of the Publishing Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was the creation in 2006 of the Publishing Board within the University which became a generator of ideas on the development of scientific book publishing and actively cooperated with printing enterprises of Ukraine (the author of the article was a member of this board). The administration of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv provided a substantial financial support for publication of educational and scientific literature of different genres and on different topics for educational needs both of the University itself and Ukrainian educational sphere in general. As a result of active publishing activity, the Publishing Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv since 1996 has published more than 4.5 million copies of publications whose authors are members of the academic community of the University. Among the significant publications of the Publication Centre of the last two decades the article notes Ivan Franko (10 volumes, authors – R. Horak and Ya. Hnativ), Encyclopedia. The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (2 volumes), Social Geography (2 books, author – Prof. O. Shabliy) and others. The results of the activities of the Publication Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv were demonstrated during participation at Book Forums and other events in the publication and printing sphere. This article permits researchers in Humanities to analyze and evaluate the achievements and at the same time problems of the scientific publication activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Tymoshyk, Mykola. LONDON MAGAZINE «LIBERATION WAY» AND ITS PLACE IN THE HISTORY OF UKRAINIAN JOURNALISM ABROAD. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, février 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11057.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.

Sklenar, Ihor. The newspaper «Christian Voice» (Munich) in the postwar period : history, thematic range of expression, leading authors and publicists. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, février 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11393.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The article considers the history, thematic range of expression and a number of authors and publicists of the newspaper «Christian Voice» (with the frequency of a fortnightly). It has been published in Munich by nationally conscious groups of migrants since 1949 as a part of the «Ukrainian Christian Publishing House». The significance of this Ukrainian newspaper in post-Nazi Germany is only partly comprehended in the works of a number of diaspora press’s researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to supplement the scientific information about the «Christian Voice» in the postwar period, in particular, the yearbook for 1957 was chosen as the principal subject of analysis. In the process of writing the article, we used such methods: analysis, synthesis, content analysis, generalization and others. Thus, the results of our study became the socio-political and religious context in which the «Christian Voice» was founded. The article is also a concise overview of the titles of Ukrainian magazines in post-Nazi Germany in the 1940s and 1950s. The thematic analysis of publications of 1957 showed the main trends of journalistic texts in the newspaper and the journalistic skills of it’s iconic authors and publicists (D. Buchynsky, M. Bradovych, S. Shah, etc.). The thematic range of the newspaper after 1959 was somewhat narrowed due to the change in the status of the «Christian Voice» when it became the official newspaper of the UGCC in Germany. It has been distinguished two main thematic blocks of the newspaper ‒ social and religious. Historians will find interesting factual material from the newspaper publications about the life of Ukrainians in the diaspora. Historians of journalism can supplement the bibliographic apparatus in the journalistic and publicistic works of the authors in the postwar period of the newspaper and in subsequent years of publishing. Based upon the publications of the «Christian Voice» in different years, not only since 1957, journalists can study the contents and a form of different genres, linguistic peculiarities in the newspaper articles, and so on.

Résumé :
The subject of the study is the ideological, financial, economic and socio-social conditions of the publishing house and the editorial board of the magazine “New Pathway” Winnipeg period 1941-1977. The main objectives is to determine the peculiarities of the conditions of publishing a Ukrainian magazine in exile, which provides for the systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of factual material on creative and material activities of the “New Pathway” and socio-political environment that influenced the information and ideological and business policy of the publication. The basis of the research methodology is axiological, cultural, systemic approaches; methods of historicism, analysis, synthesis, generalization were used. The study provides not only a description of the historical path of the publication in this period, but also the reasons for miscalculations and successes, both financial and economic and socio-political, which allowed not only to stay in the information field and market for more than ninety years, technical circumstances of its existence, the political struggle in the new wave of emigration after World War II, changes in demographic and linguistic situation among the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The reasons for the situational increase and decrease in the activity of the publication’s subscribers were identified; the mechanisms of expanding the readership, attracting new readers and authors are analyzed; confirmed that the efforts of editors and directors of the publishing house at the initial stage of the Winnipeg period created and strengthened the material and technical base of the publishing house, conducted advertising campaigns and direct work to attract new subscribers and readers; The significance of the study is that for the first time in Ukraine the information about the Winnipeg period of the Ukrainian-Canadian weekly “New Pathway”, its financial and financial problems and creative and editorial successes was analyzed and summarized, thus filling another page in the history of Ukrainian diaspora periodicals.

Tymoshyk, Mykola. UKRAINIAN CHILDREN’S MAGAZINE ON EMIGRATION AS A SPECIFIC TYPE OF PUBLICATION (ON THE MATERIALS OF THE LONDON MONTHLY “YOUNG FRIENDS”). Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, février 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11394.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
For the first time, one of the popular children’s magazines of the Western Ukrainian Diaspora “Young Friends” became the subject of research. Founded in March 1955, it ceased to exist in 1984. There is no complete filing of this newspaper in any book collection of Ukraine, it has not been digitized yet, the editorial office did not have a site. For this reason, the author conducted a study of this journal in the library-archive of the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain (UUB) in London. The peculiarities of journal formation and the specifics of the editorial policy are clarified. The experience of publishing a Ukrainian children’s magazine abroad for a long time (in color and on chalk paper) without any financial support from the state, but only by public money, is quite instructive for the current situation in Ukraine when children’s periodicals have almost disappeared from the national information space due to indifferent contemplation of the state.

Résumé :
In the spring of 2021, the Danish Borderland Association published the book Danskerne findes i mange modeller – portrætter af 15 unge med bindestregsidentitet by Marlene Fenger-Grøndahl. The book consists of fifteen interviews with young so-called cultural ambassadors of the Borderland Association, as well as essays on the history of the Danish-German borderland and the concept of a hyphenated identity that the young respondents refer to. In minority research, the concept of a hyphenated identity is both used and contested. However, the interviews underline that the concept can serve as an important backdrop for the empowerment of young people with minority identities. This ECMI Minorites Blog entry is written by Garbi Schmidt, professor of Cultural Encounters at Roskilde University.
