Sokolova, Elena. Onomastic space of monuments of writing of Kievan Rus. ru : INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1869553.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The monograph is devoted to the problem of recreating the linguistic-ethnic unity of the Old Russian anthroponymic and toponymic systems, the discovery of direct connections between the proper name and mental landmarks. The monograph provides a comprehensive description of the onomasticon of ancient Russian monuments of writing in line with comparative historical linguistics, taking into account the encyclopedic, ethnolinguistic and etymological characteristics of proper names. The system and structure of the onomastic space of monuments of ecclesiastical and secular content of the XI-XIII centuries are investigated, conceptual approaches to their description are proposed. The study of the functions of proper names, their morphemics and semantics allowed us to establish the national and cultural specifics of the Old Russian onomastic vocabulary, to determine the prospects for its evolution, as well as the formation of the modern Russian anthroponymic system. Modeling of the Old Russian onomastic space both in the field of anthroponymy and toponymy takes into account the connection of proper names with contextual usage. The participation of nominal signs in the formation of the space of written and artistic texts of the era of the Kievan state is based on the attachment of certain proper names to texts of a religious and secular nature. Nomination in the space of proper names is considered in the monograph not only as a process of activity of a creative nature, but also as a means of onymic word production in the older era. It is addressed to specialists in historical lexicology and onomastics, language history, teachers of literature, local historians.

Balabanova, Evgeniya, E. Voynikanis et A. Minbaleev. Permissible limits of copyright restrictions in the context of domestic, foreign and international law. ru : INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1859604.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The monograph is devoted to the study of the problem of determining the permissible limits of copyright restrictions on works of science, literature and art. Limitations of exclusive rights to copyright objects, as well as their protection, have a serious impact on the formation of the general cultural context of the intellectual space and the socio-economic development of society as a whole. The free use of copyright objects acts as one of the key creative incentives and is of fundamental importance for balancing the interests of participants in legal relations arising in connection with the creation and use of works. An attempt has been made to carry out a comprehensive analysis of international, foreign and domestic experience of legal regulation in the field under consideration, covering both theoretical and practical aspects, in the context of historical retrospect and taking into account current trends in the development of modern copyright. A wide range of issues related to the functioning of the mechanism for limiting exclusive copyrights, modeling the system of criteria used to assess the permissibility of restrictions within the Romano-Germanic and Anglo-American legal traditions are considered. Special attention is paid to the development of new approaches to understanding possible ways to adjust the current legal regulation (many proposals for improving civil legislation are reflected). Based on the study of the limits of limitation of exclusive copyrights, the conceptual foundations for the formation of a restrictive mechanism have been developed, as well as a system of factors of fundamental importance for determining the nature of its functioning has been formulated. For a wide range of readers interested in copyright issues. It can be useful for students, postgraduates and teachers of law schools.

Résumé :
Many historical processes are dynamic. Populations grow and decline. Empires expand and collapse. Religions spread and wither. Natural scientists have made great strides in understanding dynamical processes in the physical and biological worlds using a synthetic approach that combines mathematical modeling with statistical analyses. Taking up the problem of territorial dynamics—why some polities at certain times expand and at other times contract—this book shows that a similar research program can advance our understanding of dynamical processes in history. The book develops hypotheses from a wide range of social, political, economic, and demographic factors: geopolitics, factors affecting collective solidarity, dynamics of ethnic assimilation/religious conversion, and the interaction between population dynamics and sociopolitical stability. It then translates these into a spectrum of mathematical models, investigates the dynamics predicted by the models, and contrasts model predictions with empirical patterns. The book's highly instructive empirical tests demonstrate that certain models predict empirical patterns with a very high degree of accuracy. For instance, one model accounts for the recurrent waves of state breakdown in medieval and early modern Europe. And historical data confirm that ethno-nationalist solidarity produces an aggressively expansive state under certain conditions (such as in locations where imperial frontiers coincide with religious divides). The strength of the book's results suggests that the synthetic approach advocated can significantly improve our understanding of historical dynamics.

Résumé :
In this book, Lenhard concentrates on the ways in which computers and simulation are transforming the established conception of mathematical modeling. His core thesis is that simulation modeling constitutes a new mode of mathematical modeling that is rearranging and inverting key features of the established conception. Although most of these new key features—such as experimentation, exploration, and epistemic opacity—have their precursors, the new ways in which they are being combined is generating a distinctive style of scientific reasoning. Lenhard also documents how simulation is affecting fundamental concepts of solution, understanding, and validation. He feeds these transformations back into the philosophy of science, thereby opening up new perspectives on longstanding oppositions. By combining historical investigations with practical aspects, the book is accessible for a broad audience of readers. Numerous case studies covering a wide range of simulation techniques are balanced with broad reflections on science and technology. Initially, what computers are good at is calculating—with a speed and accuracy far beyond human capabilities. Lenhard goes further and investigates the emerging characteristics of computer-based modeling, showing how this initially simple observation is creating a number of surprising challenges for the methodology and epistemology of science. These calculated surprises will attract both philosophers and scientific practitioners who are interested in reflecting on recent developments in science and technology.

Résumé :
Simulation modeling makes use of computational resources in fields that are not of a mathematical nature. The first part of this chapter introduces four phases of the historical development of computation and simulation (C&S) and discusses their relationship to interdisciplinarity. Starting with a pioneering phase, C&S went through disciplinary specialization, ubiquitous diffusion, and a recent infrastructural turn. The second part of the chapter explores aspects of the interdisciplinary dynamics of C&S, especially the interplay between complexity, experimentation, and visualization. Then, C&S is put in relationship to Shinn’s “research technology” and Galison’s “trading zones.” Finally, the chapter observes a recent turn toward network-like interdisciplinary integration.

Résumé :
Bayesian models of language acquisition are powerful tools for exploring how linguistic generalizations can be made. Notably, Bayesian models assume children leverage statistical information in sophisticated ways, and so it is important to demonstrate that children’s behavior is consistent with both the assumptions of the Bayesian framework and the predictions of specific models. We first provide a historical overview of behavioral evidence suggesting children utilize available statistical information to make useful generalizations in a variety of tasks. We then discuss the Bayesian modeling framework, including benefits of particular interest to both developmental and theoretical linguists. We conclude with a review of several case studies that demonstrate how Bayesian models can be applied to problems of interest in language acquisition.

Résumé :
The difficulties of exploring African history, especially for earlier periods, have spurred the development of a wide range of methodologies and approaches, such that Wyatt McGaffey once termed it “the decathlon of the social sciences.” Historians have long utilized archaeology, ethnography, historical linguistics, and oral traditions, but are only beginning to explore the possibilities of genetics or many of the new techniques used by archaeology and other sciences. And as digital sources—from historical documents and statistics to cartographic, climatic, demographic, and environmental modeling—proliferate, so do the problems in using them. The Oxford Encyclopedia of African Historiography: Methods and Sources discusses these sources and methods, and examines how these developments have influenced the scholarship that historians produce. Such methods continue to evolve, demanding that historians develop basic understandings of them. Thus, the Encyclopedia builds a theoretical foundation for the field, expanding the ways that Africa can be studied, and recovering the histories of the continent that often appear outside of the documentary record.

Résumé :
ThisHandbookoffers a systematic and comprehensive guide to the historical study of crime and criminal justice. It brings together essays written by researchers who work on crime and criminal justice in the past, with an emphasis on how the interaction between history and social sciences has shaped the field. It describes the methods of historical research, noting the potential, limitations, and pitfalls of these methods. Topics range from the modeling of crime trends to problems in interpretation of crime statistics, the geography of crime, organized crime and the cultural concept of the urban underworld, prostitution, retail theft, crime museums, and the role of women in Soviet criminology. There are also sections on police, courts, and prisons as major components of criminal justice. In addition, the volume explores how approaches to crime have been influenced by cultural assumptions about crime and violence in relation to gender. This introduction discusses the purpose, structure, and conceptual issues related to how theHandbookwas assembled.

Résumé :
Chapter 1 considers the circumstances underpinning Pope Benedict XIV’s patronage of anatomy and anatomical modelling in Bologna and antiquarian display in Rome. It situates the pope’s support of anatomy in the wider context of his religious pursuits as an assessor of sanctity who saw in anatomy a powerful tool for identifying signs of holy embodiment. In particular, the chapter explores Lambertini’s patronage of anatomical modelling and practice in light of the role he attributed to anatomical knowledge in his major work on canonization, his De servorum Dei beatificatione et canonizatione beatorum (1734–8). While doing so, it construes Lambertini’s support for anatomy and anatomical displays against the broader historical canvas of post-Tridentine concerns about the cult of saints and relics, the authority of the pope, and the pontiff’s claims to jurisdiction over both the temporal and the spiritual realms.
