Résumé :
Abstract. National and regional historical landslide databases are increasingly viewed as providing empirical evidence for the geomorphic effects of ongoing environmental change and for supporting adaptive territorial planning. In this work, we present the design and current content of the Czech Historical Landslide Database (CHILDA), the first of its kind for the territory of Czechia (the Czech Republic). We outline the CHILDA system, its functionality, and technical solution. The database was established by merging and extending the fragmented regional datasets for highly landslide-prone areas in Czechia. Currently, the database includes 699 records (619 landslides, 75 rockfalls, and 5 other movement types) encompassing the period from the oldest determined records (1132) up to 1989, which represents an important cultural, political, and socioeconomic divide.

Résumé :
Historical Data Grinder (HDG) is an EAV database model designed to store and aggregate historical information regardless of geographic space, chronological period, or topic of interest. The source code of the database is available open source at: https://github.com/angelalumezeanu/hdg_structure. This paper details the specificities of HDG within the framework of other digital tools focused on the history of Romania, describes the updates brought by version 2.0, and highlights its advantages compared to traditional relational databases. To exemplify the latter, it presents the procedure for ingesting a major data set: members of the Hungarian parliament elected in the Transylvanian constituencies between 1865-1918. The data set is available for the general public, along with other information from HDG, at www.hdgrinder.ro.

Résumé :
This article presents the Eighteenth-Century English Phonology Database (ECEP) in the context of historical phonology and historical corpora. The eighteenth century witnessed the proliferation of works on elocution and orthoepy and yet the field lacks searchable digital sources comparable to those available in other disciplines like historical syntax or historical pragmatics. Because of this and for other reasons such as the difficulty in deciphering idiosyncratic notation systems in the original materials, there has been a certain disregard for the study of eighteenth-century phonological evidence. The ECEP database aims to redress this absence of research material by collecting data from eighteenth-century pronouncing dictionaries in the form of IPA transcriptions (c. 1,600 different example words totalling c. 17,600 transcriptions) and supplementary metadata, with a view to facilitating systematic analyses of phonological, chronological and geographic patterns, and also normative attitudes. The richness of the contents in ECEP will thus be of interest to phonologists, dialectologists and language variationists from the historical as well as the synchronic perspective, in that eighteenth-century orthoepists laid the ground for what became ‘Received Pronunciation’. Methodologically, the compilation of the ECEP database aims to contribute to the thriving field of corpus linguistics with a new research tool for the study of the history of English.

Résumé :

Sweden has an enormous treasure in its vast number of large-scale historical maps from a period of 400 years made for different purposes, that we call map series. The maps are also very time and regional dependent with respect to their concepts. A large scanning project by Lantmäteriverket will make most of these maps available as raster images. In many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, like history, human geography and archaeology, historical maps are of great importance as a source of information. They are used frequently in different studies for a variety of problems. A full and systematic analyse of this material from a database perspective has so far not been conducted. During the last decade or two, it has been more and more common to use data from historical maps in GIS-analysis. In this thesis a novel approach to model these maps is tested. The method is based on the modelling of each map series as its own ontology, thus focusing on the unique concepts of each map series. The scope of this work is a map series covering the province of Gotland produced during the period 1693-1705. These maps have extensive text descriptions concerned with different aspects of the mapped features. Via a code marking system they are attached to the maps. In this thesis a semantic analysis and an ontology over all the concepts found in the maps and text descriptions are presented. In our project we model the maps as close to the original structure as possible with a very data oriented view. Furthermore; we demonstrate how this ontology can be used as a conceptual schema for a logical E/R database schema. The Ontology is described in terms of the Protégé meta-model and the E/R schema in UML. The mapping between the two is a set of elementary rules, which are easy for a human to comprehend, but hard to automate. The E/R schema is implemented in a demonstration system. Examples of some different applications which are feasibly to perform by the system are presented. These examples go beyond the traditional use of historical maps in GIS today

Turner, Hamish. « Creating a Historical Database for Roads in Greater Sydney using Map Digitisation ». Thesis, Faculty of Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27161.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The aim of this thesis is to create a historical database for roads in Greater Sydney using map digitisation. The database was constructed to label the status of road in Sydney at a certain time by nominating their opening date, and if applicable, their closing date. The project was completed in the QGIS working environment, an open-sourced program that allows for map digitisation to be completed. A method was developed for map digitisation that can be used to extract spatial data from historical maps and place them in a collective vector layer. The method considers extensive georeferencing of the maps, as well as editing and cleaning the maps through raster and vector analysis. Preferred methods for map digitisation used in the project were identified. For a considerable area of Sydney, in which approximately 52000 road links were included, almost half of the links were identified with an open date by the start of the twentieth century. A further half of these links were confined to opening within a thirty-year period. The progressive change in open links, the length of the network, the area of the network surveyed and the number of intersections open was also reviewed with time. The project has established a strong foundation for a historical road database for Sydney. It has also outlined methods and procedures that can be followed to progress the database further.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
With Anglo settlement of southern Arizona in the late 1800s, fire regimes were altered dramatically. Currently, desert scrub has experienced a dramatic rise in frequency and size of wildfire which may remove fire-intolerant perennials that define the community structure. On the contrary, woodlands and forests now contain excessive fuel build up and require prescribed burning to restore the system's balance. These opposing attitudes reflect the conundrum of how to manage naturally occurring fires, or where and when to initiate prescribed burning to recreate each vegetation community's "natural" fire regime. To resolve this dilemma, there is need to discern natural fire histories by collecting specific baseline data such as where, when and how the landscape has burned. This research has been focused on the design and development of a relational database, and the incorporation of a geographic information system to develop a system that can be used to fulfill this need.

Using the unique Norfolk Island pedigree, this dissertation focused on extended pedigree analysis to evaluate the suitability of whole mitochondrial genome analysis for historical casework, and to provide one of the first mutation rate estimates for the entire mitochondrial genome. This research also provided a mitochondrial DNA control region database representing World War II-era Australian soldiers that has been used by the Australian Defence Force for human identification. It is expected that this work will help to reduce the incorrect identification of military remains and will assist the forensic community for cases involving familial matching.

Résumé :
The mitochondrion is a tiny organelle that is the power supplier of the cell and vital to the functioning of the body organs. Additionally it contains a small circular genome of about 16 kb, present in many copies which makes the mitochondrial DNA more viable than nuclear DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is also maternally inherited and thus provides a direct link to maternal relatives. These two properties are of particular use for forensic samples, which only contain limited or degraded amounts of DNA, and for historical samples (ancient DNA). This thesis presents work on the mitochondrial DNA in the hypervariable regions (HV) I and II, in both contemporary and historical samples. Forensic genetics makes use of mitochondrial DNA analysis in court as circumstantial evidence, and population databases are used for the calculation of evidence value. Population samples (299) across Sweden have been analysed in order to enrich the EDNAP mtDNA database (EMPOP) (paper I). The application of mitochondrial DNA analysis allowed for analysis of historical skeletal remains: Copernicus, 1473-1543 (paper II), Karin Göring, 1888-1931 (paper III) and Medieval bones, 880-1000 AD, from a mass grave found in Sigtuna, Sweden (paper IV). The thesis also includes analyses of bones and teeth from the shipwrecked crew of the Vasa warship, 1628, samples from the Vasa museum, Stockholm, Sweden (paper V). Overall, the varying age of the samples and the different conservation environments (soil and water) accounted for variations in quality, but still allowed for successful DNA analysis.

Résumé :
This thesis outlines a technique for rapid documentation of historic sites in volatile cultural landscapes. Using Holt Cemetery as an exemplary case study, a workflow was developed incorporating RTK terrain survey, UAS aerial imagery, photogrammetry, GIS, and smartphone data collection in order to create a multifaceted database of the material and spatial conditions, as well as the patterns of use, that exist at the cemetery. The purpose of this research is to create a framework for improving the speed of data creation and increasing the accessibility of information regarding threatened cultural resources. It is intended that these processes can be scaled and adapted for use at any site, and that the products generated can be utilized by researchers, resource management professionals, and preservationists. In utilizing expedited methods, this thesis specifically advocates for documentation of sites that exist in coastal environments and are facing imminent destruction due to environmental degradation.

Résumé :
The paper presents work on two databases of vernacular Old East Slavic writing, viz. the databases of birchbark letters and epigraphy. The task is to link the information of archaeological/historical and linguistic character, namely, the possibility of simultaneous expansion and updating of the database and of a linguistic corpus that enables grammatical and lexical search. The online database Old East Slavic birch bark letters and the section of the historical subcorpus of the Russian National corpus containing birch bark letters call for an integration. This includes, in particular, creating an online workstation for the morphological markup of texts linked to the database entries, the possibility of exporting XML-databases with morphological markup to include them in the RNC, the possibility of automatic generation of forward and backward word indices to the database on the basis of the marked corpus, mutual verification of previously compiled manually indices to the book by A. A. Zalizniak The Old Novgorod Dialect (a new updated edition of this book is being prepared) and markup of the corpus. Creation of a new database on the Old East Slavic epigraphy is designed to overcome the fragmented state of the publications and research in the field, combining the material accumulated by the scholars into a single electronic resource. From the point of view of programming, the architecture of the epigraphy database is analogous to the one of the birch bark database, which makes it possible to create an annotated corpus of the Old East Slavic epigraphy.

The quantification of storm surge is vital for flood hazard assessment in communities affected by coastal storms. The astronomical tide is an integral component of the total still water level needed for accurate storm surge estimates. Coastal hazard analysis methods, such as the Coastal Hazards System and the StormSim Coastal Hazards Rapid Prediction System, require thousands of hydrodynamic and wave simulations that are computationally expensive. In some regions, the inclusion of astronomical tides is neglected in the hydrodynamics and tides are instead incorporated within the probabilistic framework. There is a need for a rapid, reliable, and accurate tide prediction methodology to provide spatially dense reconstructed or predicted tidal time series for historical, synthetic, and forecasted hurricane scenarios. A methodology is proposed to combine the tidal harmonic information from the spatially dense Advanced Circulation hydrodynamic model tidal database with a rapid tidal reconstruction and prediction program. In this study, the Unified Tidal Analysis program was paired with results from the tidal database. This methodology will produce reconstructed (i.e., historical) and predicted tidal heights for coastal locations along the United States eastern seaboard and beyond and will contribute to the determination of accurate still water levels in coastal hazard analysis methods.

Résumé :
After recent high profile pipeline incidents in the United States, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued recommendations to review ILI technologies with respect to tool tolerance, probability of detection and probability of identi?cation, and to provide a model with detailed procedures for evaluating the e?ect of interacting corrosion and crack threats. Phase I of the PRCI project NDE-4E was initiated in 2013 to address the ?rst of these recommendations to the extent possible by mining existing historical operator data. The main goal of the project was to create a database of crack ILI and excavation information collected from operatorsandtouseittocharacterizetheperformanceofavailableILItechnologies. The database was created and populated in Phase I of the NDE 4-E project, completed in July of 2015. The purpose of Phase II is to collect additional data and update the database and statistical analysis with an emphasis on collecting crack features measured by Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer(EMAT)ILI tools and interacting crack in corrosion features measured by ultrasonic (UT) ILI tools

Résumé :
This US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory engineering technical note (CHETN) documents a preliminary study on the use of specialized machine learning (ML) methods to model the variations in groundwater level (GWL) with time. This approach uses historical groundwater observation data at seven gage locations in Wyoming, USA, available from the USGS database and historical data on several relevant meteorological variables obtained from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset produced by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (usually referred to as C3S) at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts to predict future GWL values for a desired period of time. The results presented in this report indicate that the ML method has the potential to predict both short-term (4-hourly) as well as daily variations in GWL several days into the future for the chosen study region, thus alleviating the need for employing sophisticated process-based numerical models with complicated model structure configurations.

Résumé :
This technical note synthesizes and disseminates results of a 2020 survey of USACE dredging program and project managers to identify and prioritize needs related to the modernization and streamlining of the dredged material assessment decision guidance pursuant to Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Section 103 of the Marine Protection Research and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA). Priorities identified through the survey and subsequent follow-on interviews—together with advances in science and technology—will facilitate development of an electronic decision guidance tool to enable consistent, timely, and cost-effective dredged material management decisions. This tool will also facilitate a standardized database for ready access to historical data.

Résumé :
The California Transportation Improvement Program System (CTIPS) is the main tool used by Caltrans’ Division of Financial Programming to support the business of transportation programming. It is a multi-agency joint-use project programming database system applied to develop and manage various state and federal transportation programming documents. The goal of this project is to evaluate CTIPS and explore various new options that will maintain the current functionality of CTIPS, meet legislative guidelines for ADA compliance, ensure security of the system, and have sufficient scalability and capabilities for integration with other systems in the future. The research is based on the review of current and historical documents, interviews, and surveys of the customers of the Division of Financial Programming; the survey of programming systems used by the other 49 states and District of Columbia (DC) in the U.S.; an interview with the CTIPS service support provider; and interviews and surveys of the software companies that provide services and products similar to CTIPS. This research identifies risks associated with CTIPS and opportunities for improvements; compares the processes in California with currently recognized best practices and with those used in the other states in the U.S.; and makes recommendations for the improvement of CTIPS. Research results could help Caltrans better capture current data needs and future analytics requirements and make an informed decision about modernizing and upgrading an essential programming database.

Walmsley, Terrie, S. Amer Ahmed et Christopher Parsons. A Global Bilateral Migration Data Base : Skilled Labor, Wages and Remittances. GTAP Research Memoranda, septembre 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.rm06.

Résumé :
The lack of data on the movement of people, their wages and remittances has been the biggest impediment to the analysis of temporary and permanent migration between countries. Recent efforts in this area by Parsons, Skeldon, Walmsley and Winters (2005) to construct a global bilateral matrix of foreign born populations; and by Docquier and Markouk (2004) on the education levels of migrant labor have significantly improved the data available for analysis. In this paper these new databases (Parsons et al, 2005 and Docquier and Markouk, 2004) are employed to construct a globally consistent database of bilateral population, labor by skill, wages and remittances which can be used for modeling migration issues . Although the new databases have significantly improved access to migration data, data on the skills of migrant labor are incomplete and bilateral remittances data is unavailable. This paper examines the underlying data available, and then outlines the techniques used and the assumptions made to construct bilateral data on migrant labor by skills, remittances and wages. Once constructed the relationships within the migration data are examined. We draw on work undertaken on trade intensity indexes by Brown (1949), Kojima (1964), and Drysdale and Garnaut (1982) to analyze the intensity of labor migration between host and home country pairs. The results confirm that skilled labor migration is considerably more important than unskilled migration and that people migrate to both developed and developing economies. A method for further examining the reasons for the intensities is provided which decomposes the intensity indexes into a regional bias, a selection-skill bias and a region-skill bias. The decomposition shows that there are substantial regional biases in migration patterns resulting from historical ties and common borders. These regional biases are much greater than those which exist in trade.
